In May of 2000, Cowboys & Indians Magazine landed a prize fish to interview, in the person of acclaimed American actor and film director, Tommy Lee Jones. Nothing would prepare the popular magazine, or its vast readership, for the bombshell that the legendary actor was about to drop during the course of the interview. The element of surprise is always a plus for any interviewer, and on this particular day, interviewer, Eric O’Keefe, would catch the “unexpected” and, in the process, score a huge bonus for Cowboys & Indians Magazine that would become a world exclusive. But first, it is most interesting that the Oscar-winning actor, one of Hollywood’s highest paid, and one of the most indemand actors on the planet, would be nursing any kind of secret. After all, Tommy Lee Jones had sauntered down that well-travelled road paved by the world press and, therefore, had already been interviewed, inside and out, by the world’s most powerful media giants. So, what stone could possibly have been left unturned? What other delicious tidbits of information on Tommy Lee Jones could possibly have been over-looked by the so-called experts in the television, newspaper, and tabloid industry?

Surely, nothing was left uncovered. Hmm, or so they all thought. The celebrity son of Texas, who is more cowboy than actor, and who has been working cattle, and roundups, and overall ranching in real life, for over two decades on his own west Texas ranch, is a well-known fact. No surprise here. That he has real “Lonesome Dove” running in his veins, and is more Good Ol’ Boy, than slick-movie star, is common knowledge among his worldwide fans.

But crafty, ‘Lone Star Jones,’ whose cowpoke roots extend far back to his grandpappy, still had an ace or two up his sleeve. And he waited for just the right moment in his faceto-face, three-day-interview for The Paper - 760.747.7119

Cowboys & Indians Magazine, when he suddenly stopped the interviewer dead in his tracks, like the perfect ambush down a long, dusty road. Yup, Tommy Lee Jones loaded his answer with black powder, calmly twirled the chamber of his revolver, then he fired this verbal volley which stunned the world: “I feel pretty lucky. Those who know my name. Not bad for a little Indian boy. Not bad.”

Unexpected. Unforeseen. The remark by the celebrated actor forced the interviewer to, ostensibly, recover and follow-

up on the surprise attack by inquiring more of Tommy Lee Jones’ Native American ancestry on his grandmother’s side. He was quickly asked what tribe she belonged to? Tommy Lee Jones’ clarification was both short and direct: “It’s not a tribe. It’s a nation – the Cherokee Nation.”

That was over fifteen years ago. Upon reflection, it should be no surprise that the first Americans have imprinted their bloodlines on a continent now largely populated by a

variety of non-Native American inhabitants. Naturally, from the first pilgrims, to the earliest pioneers and settlers, Native Americans co-mingled with those all around them down through the centuries.

In the case of famed actor, Tommy Lee Jones, his claim was a valid one. However, similar scenarios among the rich and famous did not always play out the way it was intended. In other words, many famous individuals staked their claim to having Native American roots only to find out

they had no Native American ancestry at all.

However, it should be pointed out that many VIPs were sincere in their initial belief of having Native American heritage. In the case of legendary country singer, actor, and author, Johnny Cash (19322003), he always believed he had some Native American blood, somewhere in his lineage, and was quite proud of that belief. Until his family tree was scrupulously researched. The results devastated him. It was found that he had a generous portion of Scottish and English ancestry. But no Native American. Johnny Cash’s genealogysearch left no stone unturned – it was thoroughly traced back to the 11th-century. Johnny Cash faced the unexpected, and was clearly broken hearted, to put it mildly.

In respect to Johnny Cash’s initial belief, some family members and close friends, as well as countless Johnny Cash fans around the world, continue to honor his wishes and, to this day, remain steadfast that Johnny Cash, indeed, was of some Native American heritage.

Another famous singer, Cher (initially of “Sonny and Cher” fame), has for years, insisted that she is 1/16th Cherokee. Since her number one hit single, “Half Breed,” topped the charts back in 1973, Cher has vigilantly maintained, to this day, that she is 1/16th Cherokee . However, her claims were widely disputed from the start, among the Anglo-American sector, as well as from the Native Americans, themselves, who never (to this day) accepted her as one of their own.

Genealogical records reveal Cher (born Cherilyn Sarkisian) to be of Armenian heritage from her father’s side, which most likely lends to her dark features. On her mother’s side, research shows some English and German, but more Irish, Dutch and French ancestry.

Nevertheless, the multiaward-winning Cher (“Best Actress” Oscar, Grammy, Emmy, and holder of three Golden Globes) continues to chant, more than forty years after her hit song “Half Breed,” that she is still 1/16th Cherokee. However, her claims are not considered valid by replicated, hard scientific investigation. It appears that over the years, countless notable individuals have, as one expert puts it:

“Fudged their resumes and claimed to be Native American, in order to appear to be more exotic.”

This recurring phenomenon has long puzzled and fascinated social scientists and cultural anthropologists, alike: “If they want to sound exotic, why not lie about being part black, or part Asian, or part Arab?” One high-profile individual, international movie queen, and popular American philanthropist, Angelina Jolie, has stated openly and defiantly that she is, indeed, a descent of Native American heritage. Angelina Jolie’s claim is that her mother, Marcheline Bertrand (19502007), was part Iroquois. However, in this particular scenario, there are various motives and factors that come into play which have caused controversy and a premature rush to judgment.

The steadfast belief from Angelina Jolie of her Iroquois bloodline on her mother’s side, was soon debunked by her own biological father, renowned American actor, Jon Voight. Voight stated numerous times to both the foreign and domestic media that his late wife, Marcheline Bertrand, had said she was part Native American only to appear more exotic, and that there was no serious credence to her claim.

It was further stated that Angelina Jolie’s claim was purely subjective, since she was unusually close to her mother and wanted to emulate her in every way, including sharing her claim to Iroquois ancestry. It was also common knowledge that Angelina’s late mother was executive producer of a highly-touted documentary, “Trudell,” about Native American activist, John Trudell, which was showcased at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival. Angelina’s mother was also co-founder of the All Tribes Foundation, which benefits Native Americans. It was both touching, and sad, that Angelina Jolie’s wish to honor her mother’s claim to Iroquois heritage was deflated by the world press. Not even a drop of Iroquois blood was said to be in her DNA. The final nail to her coffin that seemed to kill off Angelina Jolie’s remarks, sadly came from her biological father, actor Jon Voight, who continued to repeat that his late wife (Angelina’s mother), was “Not seriously Iroquois.” The ensuing comments from various sectors of the public were quick to render judgment, as one blog summed it up: “Why did she have to lie?” Some offered

her a beggar’s portion of an excuse: “She probably was copying her mother. She may not have understood what it meant (her mother’s claim) or how imprecise it was.” However, this dramatic Hollywood scenario ended unexpectedly, and certainly differently than that of country singer, Johnny Cash. Whereas, Cash searched long and hard for any morsel of Native American blood in his family tree only to come up empty handed, Angelina Jolie proved her late mother to be correct after all, which stunned her father, Jon Voight, as well as the rest of the world which seemed to have rallied against her.

It was faint, and it was distant, and yet it was there, nonetheless. Angelina Jolie’s family tree did, in fact, have Iroquois heritage: a Huron woman, born in 1649, in present-day Quebec, Canada. Less than four generations away, Angelina Jolie found her Iroquois ancestor, named Catherine Annennontak (Anenontha), of the Huron Nation. The surname means, “Poor Little Thing,” or “Compassion Must Be Given To Her,” according to world linguistic experts on the Huron language. The translation phrase, “Compassion Must Be Given To Her,” is a fitting tribute to Angelina Jolie’s mother, who was not alive to defend her own Iroquois comments. So her daughter did if for her. And, in so doing, motherdaughter both earned the compassion of countless millions who were too quick to judge. Later, Angelina opened up about how close she was to her late mother, “I feel her all the time. My mom loved being a mom and made sure her children knew every day how much joy we brought to her.” Triumphant, and proving her mom as being right all along, Angelina smiled in front of the cameras, and quietly said, “I will never be as good a mother as she was.” What may seem like a tiny, or insignificant, portion of Native American ancestry, may actually be more than you think for tribal recognition. For example, “blood quantum” laws vary from tribe to tribe. And in some instances, no minimum blood quantum is required at all -- one only need provide valid genealogical paper trail, recognized by official experts. Since the U.S. federal government recognizes tribal nations as: “Domestic independent nations with the inherent authority to govern themselves,” each tribal nation can

arbitrarily choose its own degree, or level, of blood quantum law. Here are some abbreviated examples of how blood quantum requirements often vary from tribe to tribe: The Chippewa Cree of Montana, and the Mississippi Band of Choctaw, as well as the White Mountain Apache of Arizona, all require 1/2 quantum blood. However, about 20 tribes, including the Blackfoot Tribe of the Montana Reservation, the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma, as well as the Navajo Nation in Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah, all only require a ¼ blood quantum. And well over 20 different tribes, including the Apache, Comanche, and Sac & Fox Tribes of Oklahoma, only require 1/8th blood quantum. It is noteworthy that the Eastern Band of Cherokee of North Carolina, only require a 1/16th blood quantum. Noteworthy, because this is what singer, Cher, was claiming to be. However, Cher’s assertion of being 1/16th Cherokee is still, officially, dismissed as “unconfirmed,” by all reputable sources.

Another very noteworthy item is that there are even some tribes that only require 1/32 blood quantum for membership (the 1/32 blood quantum is approximately what Angelina Jolie was shown to have in her Iroquois heritage). Unlike Cher, Angelina Jolie’s claim was clearly justified. And, as previously stated, there are some Native American tribes which do not require any minimal blood quantum at all. The only requirement is a provable family tree, which reveals linear Native American heritage.

Researching Native American ancestry can be a challenging and tricky business, especially if left to non-professionals or inept researchers who are not proficient in their field. Some merely go on self-reporting by famous people, as well as general claims from the public.

The rich-and-famous can rarely get a “Hall Pass” from the genealogical experts who often check the facts. One notable and respected expert who often debunks Hollywood stars is Kara Kovalchik, who “Shakes the roots of family trees to see just how authentic those claims really are.” Kovalchik’s credentials are impressive and her reputation has her doing DNA legwork for such powerhouses as Reader’s Digest and CNN Headline News, to give just two examples. It is common knowledge that Elvis Presley (1935-1977) was directly descended from the Cherokee Nation. A claim

which gave him legitimate bragging rights. Elvis was often photographed in full Native American regalia. The “King of Rock and Roll” was a descent of his great-greatgreat-grandmother, Morning White Dove (1800-1835), who was a full-blooded Cherokee.

It is also widely-known that Las Vegas singer, Wayne Newton, is of strong Native American ancestry. Both his parents had Native American roots: Cherokee on his mother’s side, and Powhatan on his father’s side. And the current drop-dead-gorgeous, Mrs. Universe 2015, Ashley Callingbull, is the first native titleholder. The reigning Canadian is a proud advocate for her Cree Nation.

But, what about all those celebrities with Native American roots which may come as a surprise to you? Well, here is a list of Hollywood luminaries and VIPs with Native American ancestry that may surprise, or even shock you!

Actress Heather Locklear (Lumbee Tribe on her father’s side, and recognized by the Lumbee Nation). Actress Cameron Diaz (Native American descent on her mother’s side). Actor and martial arts master, Chuck Norris (part Cherokee). Actor Burt Reynolds (of Irish-Cherokee descent). Both country music singer, Billy Ray Cyrus, and daughter, Miley Cyrus, often talk of their Cherokee heritage. Actor Johnny Depp told “Entertainment Weekly,” of his Cherokee and Creek Native American heritage (Kentucky clans). Country music singer, Willy Nelson (Cherokee bloodlines). Hank Williams, Sr. and Jr. (Muscogee Creek and Tsalagi (Cherokee)). Hank Williams, Sr. (1923-1953) was officially inducted into the Native American Music Hall of Fame. World heavyweight boxing champion, Jack Dempsey (1895-1983), was of Choctaw and Cherokee descent. Singer, Carrie Underwood (Muscogee Creek bloodline). NFL quarterback, Brett Favre, 1997 Green Bay Packer Super Bowl champion, and “Favorite Player to Watch on Sunday,” in the TV Guide Viewer’s Poll in 2004, has Choctaw Native American roots, as does National Baseball Hall-of-Famer, Johnny Bench. Western movie-actor, James Garner (1928-2014) was of Cherokee descent. All the aforementioned, obviously, have European ethnicity in greater quantity, but all strongly claimed their American indigenous DNA quite proudly, though the press corps did not always report it. The list goes on and on and

would easily fill volumes of notable personages.

Many famous AfricanAmericans openly claim their Native American roots as part of their heritage, as well. Here is a short list that may come as an unexpected surprise: “King of Pop,” Michael Jackson (Choctaw ancestry on his father’s side and Blackfoot ancestry on his mother’s). Jimi Hendrix (part Cherokee). Comedian Redd Foxx of “Sanford & Son” TV fame (part Seminole). Beyonce Knowles (Cherokee roots). Singer, Tina Turner (Cherokee and Navajo extraction). Actor, James Earl Jones (part Cherokee and Choctaw). Singer Lena Horne (1917- 2010) was of Cherokee lineage. As was songstress, Eartha Kitt (1927-2008). “Godfather of Soul,” James Brown (Apache heritage).

Occasionally, a famous celeb will attempt to climb aboard a “popularity wagon,” only to fall under the wagon wheels! One of the most embarrassing moments came in a 2012 Rolling Stone Magazine interview with Canadian pop singer, Justin Bieber. During the course of the interview, Bieber referenced having Native American background (bragging rights with no truth attached). When the influential and popular Rolling Stone Magazine inquired more of this interesting bit of biography, Justin Bieber said that perhaps he could now get “free gas” due to his Native American roots. Bieber’s remark was considered “embarrassingly ignorant,” even from his once-adoring fan base. Some blogs called Bieber’s remark, “A confession of ignorance.” Many of his embarrassed defenders now wished to distance themselves from him and acquiesced to the logical conclusion: “If you don’t know what you’re talking about, best keep your mouth shut.” His laughable faux pas proved hard to shake off. At the 2013 Billboard Music Awards he was almost booed off stage. It was one thing for Bieber to sport a “Bad Boy” image, which can even create positive female attraction; it was an entirely different matter for him to be laughed at because of a “Lame Brain.” His popularity took a noticeable drop, worldwide. In September of 2015, Bieber voiced on American television that he wished to appear with country singer, Taylor Swift, in a Super Bowl halftime show. Taylor Swift was “swift” in her reply to the Canadian pop singer: “You are never, ever going to do a Super Bowl with me.” Was Taylor Swift’s well-publi-

The list of “unconfirmed” cases, by famous individuals claiming to have Native American roots is much too lengthy to be printed here.

In recognizing Native Americans of repute, it is obligatory to at least nod in the direction of certain individuals who have had a very dramatic impact on the American cultural landscape. Such as in the likes of All-American athlete, Jim Thorpe (1887-1953), who was of Sac and Fox (Sauk and Meskwaki), and Potawatomi bloodlines. His tribal name, “Wa-tho-huck,” means “Bright

Some Good News from Sacramento

Your legislature was able to do some positive work for the taxpayers this session. For starters a number of tax hike proposals were blocked, including $1 billion in new gas taxes, $2 billion from a $65 per-vehicle `highwayuser fee’ and $1.8 billion from new taxes on managed health care plans.

Thankfully, attempts to use our transportation and healthcare needs as an excuse for unnecessary tax increases failed. This year’s budget was the largest in history, with over $7 billion in additional revenues. There was no need to increase taxes or raise fees to pay for core government responsibilities. In other good news, provisions mandating a 50-percent cut in gasoline use over the next 15 years were deleted from SB 350. We all support clean air and water, but issuing decrees from

Oceanside Harbor Days is this Weekend – Returning this coming Saturday and Sunday, September 2627, is the Oceanside Harbor Days which is packed with a variety of entertainment, attractions, contests, and exhibits. Saturday from 9am6pm, and Sunday from 9am-5pm, share the experience with the whole family with a pancake breakfast hosted by the Oceanside Fire Department, over 200 arts and craft activities, costumed pirates led by Captain Jack Sparrow, food court, beer garden, and the unique “Nail and Sail” competition that draws thousands of spectators. Contests include a fishing derby, beauty pageant, Tiki Swim. This special multiattraction event is presented by Genentech and organized by the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce. “For more than 50 years now, the Oceanside Harbor District has hosted this event,” stated David Nydegger, Oceanside’s Chamber President. Special military guests are a highlight, too. This year the Navy’s LCAC from ACU-5 will land on the beach early Saturday morning and vehicles from Camp Pendleton’s Mechanized Museum will be on display on the Harbor Beach. Harbor Days is free to the public with complimentary transportation provided by the Chamber via the British Bus Company, with their unique doubledecker buses picking up Harbor Days attendees from various shuttles stops throughout the Harbor and also provides a pick-up/drop-off location at

Sacramento, driving business away and raising costs is not the solution. Obviously, taxes and restrictions of this type fall hardest on working Californians who can least afford them. I am pleased to report these proposals failed after an outpouring of faxes, emails and phone calls from concerned citizens. Republicans were joined by moderate, pro-business Democrats to block counterproductive regulations and tax increases. We stood up for the innovation economy by promoting plans to give job opportunities to the most Californians and supported an earned income tax credit to allow hard-working citizens to keep more of their money.

Our future well-being depends on a vibrant, growing economy. Continuing the bi-partisan cooperation we saw this year will keep higher taxes and growth inhibiting restrictions from getting in the way.

ly, a nod must be given to Chickasaw Governor, Cyrus Harris (1817-1888), first elected and five-term Chickasaw Governor, and brilliant negotiator and defender for the Chickasaw Nation during his lifetime. He died over 127 years ago, and yet this most remarkable man’s story continues to be told, as history refuses to relinquish hold of him. Native American historians, in their inter-tribal discussions of various individuals who played a prominent role in Amerindian culture, are quick to recognize and honor, Cyrus Harris, a proud “warrior” who fought diligently for the Chickasaw people.

It is noteworthy that Ms. Evelyn Madison, who is Associate Publisher, as well as “The Social Butterfly” for this publication, The Paper, has an indirect tie to Cyrus Harris, mentioned above. Evelyn Madison’s late husband, Gene, was a direct descendant of Cyrus Harris, a fact that Gene, himself, must have been most proud of.

Today, we live in an everchanging world, with everchanging values, and everchanging perspectives. It was not that long ago that Native Americans were considered savages, uprooted, and decimated by the millions. Today, the world is in constant flux. It is, all at once: perplexing, prismatic, and often topsyturvy. The concept of “Cowboys & Indians” today takes on a hugely different set of values. It is a complex value-system of differing par-

The reason we seem to work with our readers is we supply them with feature stories, some historical, often dealing with military matters, sometimes little known stories (like the current issue about munitions that have creased a 'red zone' in an otherwise scenic area of France.

We recognized early on that we can't be all things to all people so we determine to just try and put out a consistently interesting publication every week; sometimes, we get into controversial subjects. We don't shy away from them. Many folks love us. A few don't. So . . . that's the philosophy behind what we do and don't publish. Thanks for being a regular reader and sharing your thoughts with us. The Initiative

Dear Editor

Land use planning should never be done by initiative. The process is too complex if you are serious about creating a good project. It is impossible to understand all the complex issues involved in a few paragraphs on a ballot measure. White Eagle and Little Dove the Kumeyaay tribal names for Frederick Gomez and Christina Villalobos “I must confess that "Little Dove" often inspires me to write of our Native American ancestry. The irony is that she probably is completely unaware of the level of inspiration she gives me, and the impact she has had on my life as a member of our Kumeyaay Nation!”

Historically Speaking

Having said that, The State Legislature did not do us any favors when they allowed that process to be used in this way. Mr Caruso and the 85/15 plan used a legal way to do just that.

Our city council did what they could to examine the project with a 365 page evaluation. I know they all spent hours looking over the proposed project.

Our community, Carlsbad, did not just happen. We have a beautiful, well planned community because of the rules that govern development here. All of us spent a lot of time over the years setting up those rules that govern our development. Probably the most

An Unbelievable Effort of Production

Between 1940 and 1946, the United States became the most powerful nation in the world. This came about because of World War II.

Anyone who wanted a job got one – unemployment was a forgotten memory of the Great Depression. The nation rose from being a sleeping giant to an industrial jugernaught that built not only the largest armed force in history, but an arsenal of war materials that not only equipped our nation’s military, but that of a number

important thing our council did was require Mr Caruso to sign a document saying that he would abide by all those rules and regulations. I am not very happy with how this process was used but I believe we are protected. Signing another petition will not make it better City planning by ballot is not the best way to do business.

I always read Chuckles first, and there was one of my all time favorites, the one about the bricklayer. I first got a written copy of this in 1965, direct from a company I represented in England.

In the original the bricklayer was from Liverpool, and I think his letter was to his union, asking for a day off. But the funny part was almost word for word, 50 years later.

I put it in my Tickler file, and reread it twice a year. /s/Robert MARSHALL, San Marcos

of other Allied nations such as Great Britain, France, Canada, China, the Soviet Union, and others.

Because of the war, America’s Great Depression was ended due to the great demand of war products, which put the nation back to work. During the period from 1940 through 1945, the United States produced more material from implements of war to uniforms and food stuffs than had been produced by all nations in a century of time before the War. To give an approximate picture of the enormity of America’s wartime production, consider the following data taken from several historical accounts: For the Navy, there were 22 aircraft carriers built, as well as 8 battleships, 48 cruisers, 349 destroyers, 420 destroyer escorts, 203 submarines, and 34 million tons of merchant ships, also known as “Liberty Ships.”

Shipbuilding companies were turning out troop-carrying and supply vessels in record numbers. Kaiser Shipbuilding in

You don’t need smart phones, apps or an iPad to find yourself in one or the other of these categories. Normal conversation, just talking to each other, leads to the same groupings. Meformers, caught up in themselves and informers, who see bigger pictures.

Pastor Tom Fry, Retired Church of the Nazarene Are you “In”?

A friend of mine who teaches Practical Theology is interested in the influence of digital technology in our lives and ministries. Facebook, Twitter, Skype, you name it. Are they good for the church and, if so, how can they best be used in the church?

In a recent writing he cites research by Jeffrey Boase and Chih-Hui Lai from Rutgers University who studied thousands of “Tweets” from 350 people. The “Tweeters” fell into two categories, “Meformers” and “Informers.” You can probably guess that the meformers talked mostly about themselves and the informers talked more about issues and significant developments, often pass-

What about Jesus? Where does He fit? He made some pretty bold statements that began with “I am….” And other declarations that began with first person pronoun. Would a digital-age Jesus tweet out his great statements of faith? Would he post pictures of the Passover Feast on Instagram? Would his simple statement, “Follow Me” be seen as self centered, or would it, as it did to those who first heard it, lead to bigger things than any imagined? Jesus was an “informer.” He gathered friends and followers by the thousands. He provided “links” between the traditions of the Old Testament and the bigger picture that was God’s plan for the whole world.

What about you? Your conversations. Your “shares,” “tweets,” and “posts.” Are you leading people to a bigger picture of who God is? Are you “in”?

Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms save lives

If there is a fire in your home, smoke alarms alert people to trouble when they are the most vulnerable—at night, when they are asleep or unaware of their surroundings. Like smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors alert unsuspecting residents of a colorless and odorless poisonous gas that emits when appliances such as furnaces, ranges, water heaters and room heaters malfunction.

Vista Library Celebrates 100 Years

The Vista Library, located on Eucalyptus Avenue, began delivering service to the community on September 28, 1915. While much has changed over the past 100 years, the library's devotion to serving the community and promoting free, open access to information and services has not. More than just books and banks of computers, libraries are still places where residents and families can gather to explore, interact, and learn.

At the Vista Library, new moms connect at pre-school story time or scrapbooking sessions; others attend events such as the sewing and knitting circle

The show will feature bands that call 91x and San Diego their Alma Mater. Every band on stage has ties to the San Diego area. or the health events and find that they make new friends; teenagers meet up for the Xbox series; and readers discuss current events in the periodicals room. At the Vista Library, community-building connections are happening all the time.

Aviation-wise there were 100,000 fighter aircraft built, as well as 98,000 bombers, 24,000 transport planes, and 58,000 training aircraft. Several automobile companies switched their production lines to building bombers and other large aircraft. Ford and General Motors turned out B24 “Liberators” by the hundreds. Consolidated Aircraft Co., in San Diego assembled bombers in huge factories shielded by a mammoth camouflaged canopy that, from above, made it look like a pastoral landscape of farms and fields.

Cold War Kids drummer Joe Plummer has been involved in local projects for many, many years, including Black Heart Procession, plus his work with national acts like the Shins and Modes Mouse. We are pleased to host his homecoming. More bands with San Diego ties will be added and I can’t wait to share who they will be.” This concert is from 3:00 pm to 11:00 pm, has open seating and is open to all ages. Arrive early to get the best spot! Tickets are $30.00 and can be purchased online at http://www.91x.com/homecoming/ tickets/. Children under 2 are free.

Boeing was turning out huge numbers of B-17s and other aircraft at its plants in Seattle and Moses Lake in Washington, as well as Wichita, Kan. Goodyear Rubber was turning out all sorts of tires and other war materials, including rubber, self-sealing fuel bladder wing tanks for B-29s in Lincoln, Neb., and Akron, Ohio. For the Army and Marine Corps, 93,000 tanks were built along with 257,000 artillery pieces, 105,000 mortars, 3 million machine guns, and 2.5 million military trucks. A variety of farm implement manufacturers and sewing machine companies turned to making small arms such as pistols and rifles.

Do We Need a New Computer?

“Our business (or home) PC just doesn’t seem to cut the mustard. anymore. What should we do?” We rely on our computers and mobile devices to help run our day to day business and personal lives. When they function perfectly they’re great, but when they don’t, they can drive you up the wall. There are a hundred ways your PC can mess with you. “I can turn it on then go eat breakfast before it finishes booting, it won’t turn on, it won’t turn off, I can’t run videos, it shuts down randomly, it makes funny noises, it said it has a virus, I get pop-ups and ads, it won’t download programs, I can’t get on the Internet” and the granddaddy of all, “it’s sooo

Nearly everyone has a PC; there are very few “first time” PC buyers. The first question we ask PC shoppers is, “what do you use your PC for?” The usual answer is usually Internet related application with some “off line” apps like Word, Excel, Hallmark and simple games. Our next question is “what’s wrong with your old PC?” If it’s eight years old and running XP it probably isn’t worth fixing or upgrading. The best we can do is to transfer your files to a new (or refurb) PC and recycle the carcass. If the existing PC is seven years old or less there is an excellent chance that it can be resurrected to meet most your needs, and for a lot less than the cost of a new PC. At the very least it should be worth something as a tradein on a new PC. Almost any seven year old tower or notebook is worth fixing or upgrading. A PC born with Vista or Win7 given a clean Win7 OS (operating system) and 4GB of RAM will run the Internet and most “off line” applications just as well as a new fifteen hundred dollar PC. High speed CPU’s and large amounts of RAM won’t make the Internet go any faster.

an SSD (solid state drive). The SSD can’t make the Internet faster but it dramatically improves the speed of everything else. SSDs are up to 100 times faster than HDDs (hard disc drives). Boot-up, install programs, back up, update and shut down in a fraction of the time it takes with an HDD. Substituting an SSD for the HDD in a notebook or tower will add between $90 and $180 depending on the size. An SSD in your laptop can be as fun as having a V8 in your VW Beetle. Let’s say you sit down beside the X generation dude at Starbuck’s. He smirks conde-

scendingly as you pull out your bright red $600 Acer notebook. You boot to email in 16.2 seconds. His smirk tightens and he nervously fiddles with the touchpad on his $2300 Mac Book Pro while watching out of the corner of his eye as you skip through your email. He’s had enough. He clicks to shut down. You hesitate for a few seconds, and then you click to shut down. 11.9 seconds later you close it up, bag it and nod politely as you pass his table. He stares helplessly at his screen as it tumbles through its shutdown. He never knew what hit him. You had an SSD under the hood.

There is one upgrade for a new or recent (Win 7 or 8) PCs that can really make a big difference,

Food companies produced millions of tons of food stuffs to feed the armed forces while the civilian population went to rationing food and many other items from clothing to gasoline to rubber tires. There were 16.1 million men and women in uniform throughout the various armed services, and double that amount of civilians working in all of the war production factories around the clock, sevendays-a week.

Almost overnight, beginning in 1940, America went from a sleepy, isolationist nation to that of the most powerful in the world. American forces invaded Africa, Sicily and Italy, won the battle for the Atlantic, planned and executed D-Day, marched across the Pacific and Europe, developed the atomic bomb, and ultimately conquered Japan and Germany. Nothing in the history of mankind has ever equaled the multi-layers of production toward a singular purpose: that of winning a world war.

Escondido, CA—In a 2002 issue of Neurosurgical Focus, a peerreviewed article was published by a Dr. Michael D. Martin, MD et al. in which the third sentence states: “The disc itself is active tissue that contains significant mechanisms for self-repair.” That article was published by a neurosurgeon and written directly for neurosurgeons.

“The Disc Itself Is Active Tissue...”

So what does that really mean to us? It tells us that the disc itself does have a God-given ability to heal and repair if provided the proper mechanisms for self-healing. There is a specific mechanism inherent in each of the spinal discs called the “pump mechanism of disc nutri-tion” (see Fig 1). When this mechanism is not working properly, the spinal discs will begin to die causing bulges, herniations, and eventually spinal stenosis.

The spinal disc is one of the very few tissues in the body that does not have a direct blood supply for circulation. The only way that the disc gets the circulation of water, oxygen and nutrients for self-repair is via this specific disc pump mechanism. What happens when you decrease cir-culation in any type of tissue, whether it be animal tissue, plant tissue or human tissue? Exactly, it begins to become weak and begins to degenerate.

brown leaves are the plant’s problem? Of course not, the leaves turning brown is just a condition that is telling you that there is something wrong with the plant. The plant is unhealthy and needs water and nutrients. You could spray paint the leaves green but it just covers up the condition. The underlying problem still exists and will continue to produce brown leaves until you fix the actual problem. and tingling that most experience with bulging, herniated or degenerative discs are NOT the problem. The definition of a symptom: “something that indicates the existence of something else.” It is just like the dashboard of your car telling you that something is wrong (brake lights out, engine needs checked, overheating, etc.) Those lights that appear in your car dash are NOT the problem. You can remove the lights surgically or put a piece of duct tape over the lights but the problem will NOT be fixed...the problem is still present. Let’s take a look at a plant for example...if the leaves on a plant begin to turn brown, would you say that the

Complete Treatment Planning to Meet Patient's Needs

Treatment planning in today's environment can be confusing to the patient with a myriad of problems, some obvious and others not so. Tooth decay, periodontal disease, endodontic issues, gingival recession, tooth wear, mobility, esthetic issues, muscle soreness and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) problems are just a few of the potential issues facing our patients. It's the responsibility of the dentist to create a treatment plan to address the patient's needs and communicate that plan to the patient. The starting point of the process is a complete examination identifying any and all problems orally - bacterial,

In your spine, when the pump mechanism of disc nutrition fails, the disc will begin to de-generate and become weak. This weakness in the disc is what produces the bulging, herniated, and degenerative discs.

The treatment that is provided at Dr. Heilman’s Spine and Neuropathy Care Center in Escondido is revolutionary and is specifically designed to artificially re-create the pump mechanism in the discs which allows the spinal discs to heal and repair. The best part of the treatment is that it uses no drugs, no injections, and no surgery. Plus it’s painless and many patients relax and fall asleep while undergoing the treatment. The amount of treatment needed to allow the discs to heal and repair varies from person to person and can only be determined after a detailed neurological and orthopedic evaluation. We do NOT accept everyone for treatment and will let you know if we can accept your case for treatment.

Dr. Stephen Heilman, DC at the Spine and Neuropathy Care Center in Escondido, CA will do a spinal disc severity examination to determine the

functional and esthetic. It is important to connect with the patient's wants and concerns during the examination process. In co-diagnosing, the doctor relates signs and symptoms of dental disease and formulates treatment options the patient has to resolve the issues.

During the initial stage bacterial, functional and esthetic issues are identified along with possible solutions. TMJ stability is verified and functional and esthetic corrections are presented. A smile analysis is done and all restorations whether they be fillings or crowns, should be done with the teeth's "natural appearance" in mind. If the patient wants their smile enhanced, that too should be incorporated into the treatment plan whether it be a shade improvement or arch development to a more balanced and functional smile correcting tooth position and alignment along the way. Only when the treatment plan is created can the dentist begin to formulate a staged plan for sequenced care. Sometimes the

extent of your disc damage for only $70. This examination will consist of a detailed neurological evaluation, extensive orthopedic testing, and a detailed analysis of the findings of your evaluation. patient hasn't had treatment for years and they require more extensive treatment. Sequencing their care can create a pathway for the patient to achieve a successful outcome but over a longer time. Interim restorations are sometimes used when correcting someones bite, but as a general rule, if the interim restorations may be in place for months, a better solution would be bonded restorations. These "fillings" may eliminate leakage while the tooth movement is taking place. They are easy to replace later after the movement is done, if necessary. Starting with a complete exam-
