In May of 2000, Cowboys & Indians Magazine landed a prize fish to interview, in the person of acclaimed American actor and film director, Tommy Lee Jones. Nothing would prepare the popular magazine, or its vast readership, for the bombshell that the legendary actor was about to drop during the course of the interview.

The element of surprise is always a plus for any interviewer, and on this particular day, interviewer, Eric O’Keefe, would catch the “unexpected” and, in the process, score a huge bonus for Cowboys & Indians Magazine that would become a world exclusive.

But first, it is most interesting that the Oscar-winning actor, one of Hollywood’s highest paid, and one of the most indemand actors on the planet, would be nursing any kind of secret. After all, Tommy Lee Jones had sauntered down that well-travelled road paved by the world press and, therefore, had already been interviewed, inside and out, by the world’s most powerful media giants. So, what stone could possibly have been left unturned? What other delicious tidbits of information on Tommy Lee Jones could possibly have been over-looked by the so-called experts in the television, newspaper, and tabloid industry?

Surely, nothing was left uncovered. Hmm, or so they all thought.

The celebrity son of Texas, who is more cowboy than actor, and who has been working cattle, and roundups, and overall ranching in real life, for over two decades on his own west Texas ranch, is a well-known fact. No surprise here.

That he has real “Lonesome Dove” running in his veins, and is more Good Ol’ Boy, than slick-movie star, is common knowledge among his worldwide fans.

But crafty, ‘Lone Star Jones,’ whose cowpoke roots extend far back to his grandpappy, still had an ace or two up his sleeve. And he waited for just the right moment in his faceto-face, three-day-interview for The Paper - 760.747.7119

Cowboys & Indians Magazine, when he suddenly stopped the interviewer dead in his tracks, like the perfect ambush down a long, dusty road. Yup, Tommy Lee Jones loaded his answer with black powder, calmly twirled the chamber of his revolver, then he fired this verbal volley which stunned the world: “I feel pretty lucky.

Those who know my name. Not bad for a little Indian boy. Not bad.”

Unexpected. Unforeseen. The remark by the celebrated actor forced the interviewer to, ostensibly, recover and follow-

up on the surprise attack by inquiring more of Tommy Lee Jones’ Native American ancestry on his grandmother’s side.

He was quickly asked what tribe she belonged to? Tommy Lee Jones’ clarification was both short and direct: “It’s not a tribe. It’s a nation – the Cherokee Nation.”

That was over fifteen years ago.

Upon reflection, it should be no surprise that the first Americans have imprinted their bloodlines on a continent now largely populated by a

variety of non-Native American inhabitants.

Naturally, from the first pilgrims, to the earliest pioneers and settlers, Native Americans co-mingled with those all around them down through the centuries.

In the case of famed actor, Tommy Lee Jones, his claim was a valid one. However, similar scenarios among the rich and famous did not always play out the way it was intended. In other words, many famous individuals staked their claim to having Native American roots only to find out

they had no Native American ancestry at all.

However, it should be pointed out that many VIPs were sincere in their initial belief of having Native American heritage. In the case of legendary country singer, actor, and author, Johnny Cash (19322003), he always believed he had some Native American blood, somewhere in his lineage, and was quite proud of that belief. Until his family tree was scrupulously researched. The results devastated him. It was found that he had a generous portion of Scottish and English ancestry.

But no Native American.

Johnny Cash’s genealogysearch left no stone unturned – it was thoroughly traced back to the 11th-century.

Johnny Cash faced the unexpected, and was clearly broken hearted, to put it mildly.

In respect to Johnny Cash’s initial belief, some family members and close friends, as well as countless Johnny Cash fans around the world, continue to honor his wishes and, to this day, remain steadfast that Johnny Cash, indeed, was of some Native American heritage.

Another famous singer, Cher (initially of “Sonny and Cher” fame), has for years, insisted that she is 1/16th Cherokee.

Since her number one hit single, “Half Breed,” topped the charts back in 1973, Cher has vigilantly maintained, to this day, that she is 1/16th Cherokee .

However, her claims were widely disputed from the start, among the Anglo-American sector, as well as from the Native Americans, themselves, who never (to this day) accepted her as one of their own.

Genealogical records reveal Cher (born Cherilyn Sarkisian) to be of Armenian heritage from her father’s side, which most likely lends to her dark features. On her mother’s side, research shows some English and German, but more Irish, Dutch and French ancestry.

Nevertheless, the multiaward-winning Cher (“Best Actress” Oscar, Grammy, Emmy, and holder of three Golden Globes) continues to chant, more than forty years after her hit song “Half Breed,” that she is still 1/16th Cherokee.

However, her claims are not considered valid by replicated, hard scientific investigation.

It appears that over the years, countless notable individuals have, as one expert puts it:

Four-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Jeff Gordon announced that this will be his final season of racing. You could tell it was time for him to retire during his last race when he had his blinker on the whole time.

The speed in which a woman says "nothing" when asked "What's wrong?" is inversely proportional to the severity of the storm that's coming.

Denny's has a slogan, 'If it's your birthday, the meal is on us.' ... If you're in Denny's and it's your birthday ... your life sucks!

This recurring phenomenon has long puzzled and fascinated social scientists and cultural anthropologists, alike: “If they want to sound exotic, why not lie about being part black, or part Asian, or part Arab?”

One high-profile individual, international movie queen, and popular American philanthropist, Angelina Jolie, has stated openly and defiantly that she is, indeed, a descent of Native American heritage. Angelina Jolie’s claim is that her mother, Marcheline Bertrand (19502007), was part Iroquois.

However, in this particular scenario, there are various motives and factors that come into play which have caused controversy and a premature rush to judgment.

The steadfast belief from Angelina Jolie of her Iroquois bloodline on her mother’s side, was soon debunked by her own biological father, renowned American actor, Jon Voight.

Voight stated numerous times to both the foreign and domestic media that his late wife, Marcheline Bertrand, had said she was part Native American only to appear more exotic, and that there was no serious credence to her claim.

What is it about a car that makes people think we can't see them pick their nose?

It was further stated that Angelina Jolie’s claim was purely subjective, since she was unusually close to her mother and wanted to emulate her in every way, including sharing her claim to Iroquois ancestry. It was also common knowledge that Angelina’s late mother was executive producer of a highly-touted documentary, “Trudell,” about Native American activist, John Trudell, which was showcased at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival. Angelina’s mother was also co-founder of the All Tribes Foundation, which benefits Native Americans.

It was both touching, and sad, that Angelina Jolie’s wish to honor her mother’s claim to Iroquois heritage was deflated by the world press. Not even a drop of Iroquois blood was said to be in her DNA. The final nail to her coffin that seemed to kill off Angelina Jolie’s remarks, sadly came from her biological father, actor Jon Voight, who continued to repeat that his late wife (Angelina’s mother), was “Not seriously Iroquois.” The ensuing comments from various sectors of the public were quick to render judgment, as one blog summed it up: “Why did she have to lie?” Some offered

don't shove me either!'

her a beggar’s portion of an excuse: “She probably was copying her mother. She may not have understood what it meant (her mother’s claim) or how imprecise it was.”

However, this dramatic Hollywood scenario ended unexpectedly, and certainly differently than that of country singer, Johnny Cash.

Whereas, Cash searched long and hard for any morsel of Native American blood in his family tree only to come up empty handed, Angelina Jolie proved her late mother to be correct after all, which stunned her father, Jon Voight, as well as the rest of the world which seemed to have rallied against her.

It was faint, and it was distant, and yet it was there, nonetheless. Angelina Jolie’s family tree did, in fact, have Iroquois heritage: a Huron woman, born in 1649, in present-day Quebec, Canada. Less than four generations away, Angelina Jolie found her Iroquois ancestor, named Catherine Annennontak (Anenontha), of the Huron Nation. The surname means, “Poor Little Thing,” or “Compassion Must Be Given To Her,” according to world linguistic experts on the Huron language.

The translation phrase, “Compassion Must Be Given To Her,” is a fitting tribute to Angelina Jolie’s mother, who was not alive to defend her own Iroquois comments. So her daughter did if for her.

And, in so doing, motherdaughter both earned the compassion of countless millions who were too quick to judge.

Later, Angelina opened up about how close she was to her late mother, “I feel her all the time. My mom loved being a mom and made sure her children knew every day how much joy we brought to her.”

Triumphant, and proving her mom as being right all along, Angelina smiled in front of the cameras, and quietly said, “I will never be as good a mother as she was.”

What may seem like a tiny, or insignificant, portion of Native American ancestry, may actually be more than you think for tribal recognition. For example, “blood quantum” laws vary from tribe to tribe. And in some instances, no minimum blood quantum is required at all -- one only need provide valid genealogical paper trail, recognized by official experts.

Since the U.S. federal government recognizes tribal nations as: “Domestic independent nations with the inherent authority to govern themselves,” each tribal nation can

arbitrarily choose its own degree, or level, of blood quantum law. Here are some abbreviated examples of how blood quantum requirements often vary from tribe to tribe: The Chippewa Cree of Montana, and the Mississippi Band of Choctaw, as well as the White Mountain Apache of Arizona, all require 1/2 quantum blood.

However, about 20 tribes, including the Blackfoot Tribe of the Montana Reservation, the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma, as well as the Navajo Nation in Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah, all only require a ¼ blood quantum.

And well over 20 different tribes, including the Apache, Comanche, and Sac & Fox Tribes of Oklahoma, only require 1/8th blood quantum.

It is noteworthy that the Eastern Band of Cherokee of North Carolina, only require a 1/16th blood quantum.

Noteworthy, because this is what singer, Cher, was claiming to be. However, Cher’s assertion of being 1/16th Cherokee is still, officially, dismissed as “unconfirmed,” by all reputable sources.

Another very noteworthy item is that there are even some tribes that only require 1/32 blood quantum for membership (the 1/32 blood quantum is approximately what Angelina Jolie was shown to have in her Iroquois heritage).

Unlike Cher, Angelina Jolie’s claim was clearly justified.

And, as previously stated, there are some Native American tribes which do not require any minimal blood quantum at all. The only requirement is a provable family tree, which reveals linear Native American heritage.

Researching Native American ancestry can be a challenging and tricky business, especially if left to non-professionals or inept researchers who are not proficient in their field. Some merely go on self-reporting by famous people, as well as general claims from the public.

The rich-and-famous can rarely get a “Hall Pass” from the genealogical experts who often check the facts. One notable and respected expert who often debunks Hollywood stars is Kara Kovalchik, who “Shakes the roots of family trees to see just how authentic those claims really are.”

Kovalchik’s credentials are impressive and her reputation has her doing DNA legwork for such powerhouses as Reader’s Digest and CNN Headline News, to give just two examples.

It is common knowledge that Elvis Presley (1935-1977) was directly descended from the Cherokee Nation. A claim

which gave him legitimate bragging rights. Elvis was often photographed in full Native American regalia. The “King of Rock and Roll” was a descent of his great-greatgreat-grandmother, Morning White Dove (1800-1835), who was a full-blooded Cherokee.

It is also widely-known that Las Vegas singer, Wayne Newton, is of strong Native American ancestry. Both his parents had Native American roots: Cherokee on his mother’s side, and Powhatan on his father’s side.

And the current drop-dead-gorgeous, Mrs. Universe 2015, Ashley Callingbull, is the first native titleholder. The reigning Canadian is a proud advocate for her Cree Nation.

But, what about all those celebrities with Native American roots which may come as a surprise to you?

Well, here is a list of Hollywood luminaries and VIPs with Native American ancestry that may surprise, or even shock you!

Actress Heather Locklear (Lumbee Tribe on her father’s side, and recognized by the Lumbee Nation).

Actress Cameron Diaz (Native American descent on her mother’s side). Actor and martial arts master, Chuck Norris (part Cherokee). Actor Burt Reynolds (of Irish-Cherokee descent). Both country music singer, Billy Ray Cyrus, and daughter, Miley Cyrus, often talk of their Cherokee heritage. Actor Johnny Depp told “Entertainment Weekly,” of his Cherokee and Creek Native American heritage (Kentucky clans). Country music singer, Willy Nelson (Cherokee bloodlines). Hank Williams, Sr. and Jr. (Muscogee Creek and Tsalagi (Cherokee)).

Hank Williams, Sr. (1923-1953) was officially inducted into the Native American Music Hall of Fame.

World heavyweight boxing champion, Jack Dempsey (1895-1983), was of Choctaw and Cherokee descent.

Singer, Carrie Underwood (Muscogee Creek bloodline). NFL quarterback, Brett Favre, 1997 Green Bay Packer Super Bowl champion, and “Favorite Player to Watch on Sunday,” in the TV Guide Viewer’s Poll in 2004, has Choctaw Native American roots, as does National Baseball Hall-of-Famer, Johnny Bench.

Western movie-actor, James Garner (1928-2014) was of Cherokee descent.

All the aforementioned, obviously, have European ethnicity in greater quantity, but all strongly claimed their American indigenous DNA quite proudly, though the press corps did not always report it.

The list goes on and on and

would easily fill volumes of notable personages.

Many famous AfricanAmericans openly claim their Native American roots as part of their heritage, as well. Here is a short list that may come as an unexpected surprise: “King of Pop,” Michael Jackson (Choctaw ancestry on his father’s side and Blackfoot ancestry on his mother’s). Jimi Hendrix (part Cherokee).

Comedian Redd Foxx of “Sanford & Son” TV fame (part Seminole). Beyonce Knowles (Cherokee roots). Singer, Tina Turner (Cherokee and Navajo extraction). Actor, James Earl Jones (part Cherokee and Choctaw). Singer Lena Horne (1917- 2010) was of Cherokee lineage. As was songstress, Eartha Kitt (1927-2008).

“Godfather of Soul,” James Brown (Apache heritage).

Occasionally, a famous celeb will attempt to climb aboard a “popularity wagon,” only to fall under the wagon wheels! One of the most embarrassing moments came in a 2012 Rolling Stone Magazine interview with Canadian pop singer, Justin Bieber. During the course of the interview, Bieber referenced having Native American background (bragging rights with no truth attached). When the influential and popular Rolling Stone Magazine inquired more of this interesting bit of biography, Justin Bieber said that perhaps he could now get “free gas” due to his Native American roots.

Bieber’s remark was considered “embarrassingly ignorant,” even from his once-adoring fan base.

Some blogs called Bieber’s remark, “A confession of ignorance.” Many of his embarrassed defenders now wished to distance themselves from him and acquiesced to the logical conclusion: “If you don’t know what you’re talking about, best keep your mouth shut.” His laughable faux pas proved hard to shake off. At the 2013 Billboard Music Awards he was almost booed off stage. It was one thing for Bieber to sport a “Bad Boy” image, which can even create positive female attraction; it was an entirely different matter for him to be laughed at because of a “Lame Brain.” His popularity took a noticeable drop, worldwide.

In September of 2015, Bieber voiced on American television that he wished to appear with country singer, Taylor Swift, in a Super Bowl halftime show.

Taylor Swift was “swift” in her reply to the Canadian pop singer: “You are never, ever going to do a Super Bowl with me.”

The Paper • Page 4 • September 24, 2015 Driver of Stolen Vehicle from San Diego is Arrested in Carlsbad after Collision

On Wednesday, September 16 at 12:40 p.m., a motorist called the City of Carlsbad Police Department about a reckless driver on El Camino Real at Palomar Airport Road.

The witness further reported that the reckless driver was sideswiping cars. The vehicle was described as a white ford sedan with Arizona plates.

Earlier in the day, at 9:31 a.m., the City of San Diego Police Department had released a bulletin for a stolen vehicle matching the description of the reckless driver’s vehicle.

Officers caught up to the driver at El Camino Real and Cannon Road. Officers activated their overhead lights and siren in an effort to stop the driver. The driver failed to yield.

The driver continued to drive at a high rate of speed northbound on El Camino Real and officers pursued the vehicle as the driver turned westbound on Kelly Drive. Officers discontinued the pursuit.

At Kelly Drive and Park Drive the driver collided with the guard rail, disabling the vehicle. There were no injuries associated with this incident.

Man About Town

Had the privilege of observing Escondido’s PERT (Psychiatric Emergency Response Team) in action last week.

Impressive professionals who do their job very well.

The client was an older Escondido woman who is an alcoholic and is in the early stages of dementia.

Her family was concerned about her and hoped she would go into Rehab to help deal with her alcohol problem. She refused.

The family, not being trained in how to handle this, called the Escondido Police Department for guidance. The family briefed the Watch Commander on the problem and in less than an hour three PERT members arrived at the house.

Officers arrested 45-year-old Robert Wallace, of San Diego, for auto theft and felony evading. He was booked into the Vista Detention Facility.

Sobriety Enforcement Results City of Escondido

On Friday, September 18th, the Escondido Police Department conducted a DUI Sobriety/Driver’s License Checkpoint in the area of Centre City Pkwy and Decatur Way. Following are the results from this event: • 1354 vehicles drove through the checkpoint.

• 627 vehicles were screened in primary.

• 4 FST’s were conducted, resulting in 0 DUI arrests • 1 felony arrest for parole violation; 1 drug arrest for possession of cocaine; 1 minor was arrested for open container • 39 vehicles were sent to secondary screening (drivers who could not produce a driver’s license or who were suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs) • 18 total citations were issued during the checkpoint. (3 for suspended license and 6 for unlicensed driver, 1 for no insurance.)

• 5 vehicles were impounded • 6 vehicles were released to the owner or a designated driv-

three person team dealt efficiently with the situation. They quickly gained the trust of the client, explained the logic of at least going to an ‘assessment clinic.”

The hope was that the assessment clinic would agree that the client needed to be referred to a Rehab/DeTox unit. The client finally agreed to go to the assessment clinic and, indeed, she kept her commitment the following day.

As I watched the PERT team in action I thought what a blessing it is to have people trained in crisis intervention, people who can come in and, with a great deal of sensitivity and understanding, defuse a situation, establish a rapport with their client(s) and come to a satisfactory resolution.

I had not know about this service offered by the Escondido Police Department until I had a chance to observe them in an actual case with an actual client.

Kudos to Escondido Chief of Police Craig Carter for seeing to it the community has such a service available.

The officers I accompanied on this assignment were Officer Dave Bishop, PERT Clinician Warren Basile and PERT Clinician Christine Maggio.

••••• Having a meal the other day at Charlie’s Restuarant in Escondido and spotted Eva Mitich, Charlie’s wife, and invited her to join us.

I told her of some of the stories Charlie had told us about “the old country,” amongst which that he had married a woman from a wealthy family who had two donkeys and a mule.

“Zat Charlie, he makes up stories so much,” said Ava. “I hat one donkey, not two. Ve vas farmers in da old country.”

Eva still has a thick Yugoslavian accent (the country is now known as Macedonia). Charlie has lost most of his accent . . . but he hasn’t lost his talent for telling tales.

It just happened on this one day that Eva stopped by and tripped him up a bit. But only a little bit.

I’ve known and worked with Doug for about 45 years . . . first at the old KOWN radio studios in the Escondido Village Mall, later, at the Vineyard Shopping Center, and, more recently, we would appear with Doug on his Saturday morning radio show out of Palomar College.

Doug would call me on the phone while he was on the air and we’d talk about whatever it is old guys talk about whenever they get together.

Doug has since retired and is living at Redwood Terrace in Escondido with his beautiful bride, Lorene.

I reckon we’ll head on over to visit with the Best family and wish Doug many happy returns.

••••• Spelling Lesson Missing Letter "R"

A young monk arrives at the monastery. He is assigned to helping the other monks in copying the old canons and laws of the church, by hand.

He notices, however, that all of the monks are copying from copies, not from the original manuscript. So the new monk goes to the Old Abbot to question this, pointing out that if someone made even a small error in the first copy, it would never be picked up!

In fact, that error would be continued in all of the subsequent copies.

The head monk, says, "We have been copying from the copies for centuries, but you make a good point, my son."

He goes down into the dark caves under the monastery where the original manuscripts are held as archives, in a locked vault that hasn't been opened for hundreds of years.

Hours go by and nobody sees the Old Abbot.

So the young monk gets worried and goes down to look for him. He sees the old monk banging his head against the wall and wailing.

"We missed the R! We missed the R! We missed the bloody R!" His forehead is all bloody and bruised and he is crying uncontrollably. The young monk asks the old Abbot, "What's wrong, father?"

With a choking voice, the old Abbot replies, "The word was... ''CELEBRATE!'" ••••• I woke up this morning at 8, and could smell something was wrong.

I got downstairs and found the wife face down on the kitchen floor, not breathing! I panicked. I didn't know what to do. Then I remembered McDonald's serves breakfast until 10:30.

Oceanside Harbor Days is this Weekend – Returning this coming Saturday and Sunday, September 2627, is the Oceanside Harbor Days which is packed with a variety of entertainment, attractions, contests, and exhibits. I am pleased to report these proposals failed after an outpouring of faxes, emails and phone calls from concerned citizens. Republicans were joined by moderate, pro-business Democrats to block counterproductive regulations and tax increases.

We stood up for the innovation economy by promoting plans to give job opportunities to the most Californians and supported an earned income tax credit to allow hard-working citizens to keep more of their money.

Our future well-being depends on a vibrant, growing economy. Continuing the bi-partisan cooperation we saw this year will keep higher taxes and growth inhibiting restrictions from getting in the way.

Native American historians, in their inter-tribal discussions of various individuals who played a prominent role in Amerindian culture, are quick to recognize and honor, Cyrus Harris, a proud “warrior” who fought diligently for the Chickasaw people.

Land use planning should never be done by initiative.

The process is too complex if you are serious about creating a good project. It is impossible to understand all the complex issues involved in a few paragraphs on a ballot measure.

Contemporary Women of North County (CWONC), a local women’s volunteer organization and social club, recently honored Bina Kozak for ten years of active participation in the club.

The club announced CWONC’s 2015 “Donations Drive” that will support upcoming community service projects. They are seeking old towels and blankets (any size) for shelter animals, new baby clothes (0-6 months) for active military families, scrap book supplies for children at risk, and hotel size toiletries for homeless veterans.

91x Homecoming Concert

On Friday, October 6th, San Diego’s local radio station 91x is hosting the “91x Homecoming” concert at the Oceanside Pier Amphitheater. The show will feature bands that call 91x and San Diego their Alma Mater.

Every band on stage has ties to the San Diego area. Confirmed bands include Pepper, Rocket from the Crypt, Cold War Kids, Pinback and Finch with the promise of more bands to come.

Do We Need a New Computer?

We rely on our computers and mobile devices to help run our day to day business and personal lives. When they function perfectly they’re great, but when they don’t, they can drive you up the wall. There are a hundred ways your PC can mess with you. “I can turn it on then go eat breakfast before it finishes booting, it won’t turn on, it won’t turn off, I can’t run videos, it shuts down randomly, it makes funny noises, it said it has a virus, I get pop-ups and ads, it won’t download programs, I can’t get on the Internet” and the granddaddy of all, “it’s sooo

Nearly everyone has a PC; there are very few “first time” PC buyers. The first question we ask PC shoppers is, “what do you use your PC for?” The usual answer is usually Internet related application with some “off line” apps like Word, Excel, Hallmark and simple games. Our next question is “what’s wrong with your old PC?” If it’s eight years old and running XP it probably isn’t worth fixing or upgrading. The best we can do is to transfer your files to a new (or refurb) PC and recycle the carcass. If the existing PC is seven years old or less there is an excellent chance that it can be resurrected to meet most your needs, and for a lot less than the cost of a new PC. At the very least it should be worth something as a tradein on a new PC. Almost any seven year old tower or notebook is worth fixing or upgrading. A PC born with Vista or Win7 given a clean Win7 OS (operating system) and 4GB of RAM will run the Internet and most “off line” applications just as well as a new fifteen hundred dollar PC. High speed CPU’s and large amounts of RAM won’t make the Internet go any faster.

Escondido, CA—In a 2002 issue of Neurosurgical Focus, a peerreviewed article was published by a Dr. Michael D. Martin, MD et al. in which the third sentence states: “The disc itself is active tissue that contains significant mechanisms for self-repair.”

That article was published by a neurosurgeon and written directly for neurosurgeons.

So what does that really mean to us? It tells us that the disc itself does have a God-given ability to heal and repair if provided the proper mechanisms for self-healing. There is a specific mechanism inherent in each of the spinal discs called the “pump mechanism of disc nutri-tion” (see Fig 1).
