You and me? We can dream and fantasize. Tyler Madison is living that dream. He’s 19 years old, went to Bali on a surfing trip with his dad, Marty Madison, native of Escondido but now living in Carlsbad.

Dad stayed for a month and came back home. Tyler decided he’d stay for awhile.

Scott Davis: “Jakarta was totally different than Bali - . . much more cosmopolitan. Bali was, and is, much more relaxed.

Similar to leaving LA or San Diego and going to Hawaii . . . it’s just a slower life style.

In addition to Tyler, we spoke with his dad, Marty, and with my two sons, Scott and Kenny, both of whom have visited Bali on surfing vacations. In fact, Scott lived in Bali for six months, while working there for the embassy, “pretty much as a paper shuffler, learning the local language, helping out tourists, and the like.”

Tyler, Marty and Kenny all agreed that upon arriving in Bali, after a 22 hour plane ride, you were tired. And hot. Bali is hot and humid so your body has to adjust to that. Since you’re here on a surfing trip, probably, (it’s one of the best surfing spots in the world) you will likely soon be paddling in the cooler, but still warm, ocean waters.

Having been in an air conditioned aircraft, you don’t realize how hot and humid it is till you arrive and deplane . . . but you learn to adapt rather quickly.

I first went there in 1999. We went from Singapore, flew into Denpasar, the capital of Bali, then bussed into Kuta. I went there a couple times with an old girl friend. Then, in 2000, I’d take the train from Jakarta to Denpasar, then the bus to Kuta, about an hour and a half ride. I was working at the embassy in Jakarta, which was about 1/4 mile away from the train station.

Marty Madison: When I got off the plane I remember seeing a bunch of happy faces staring at you, wanting to carry your bags, transport you wherever you want to go; there were minivans with air conditioning. The Balinese are a very friendly, happy people.

Marty stayed at Keedins 2 - a small hotel in downtown Kuta, the entertainment center of Bali. Here, you’ll find all of the exotic night clubs, plenty of food, plenty of things to do and see. It’s the town center of Bali.

If you dial a wrong number, you never get a busy signal and someone always answers.

Ken Davis: There are lots of Hindus and Muslims in Bali.

(About 92.9% Hindu, the remainder, Muslim). Everyone gets along with one another. I saw no static between them. Everyone does their own thing and lets everyone be who they want to be.

To me, Bali has an almost mystical, spiritual quality. Everywhere you go you see the Hindu temples and shrines . . . you smell the incense burning - and you sense a peaceful spiritual quiet in the people.

I even remember in the mornings, we’d have a motor launch take us out beyond the reef, drop us off and let us surf to our heart’s content. But before the launch left the shore, the boat owners had built a small shrine on the prow of the boat. On this altar were placed coins and bills, flowers, fruits . . . and when we launched, all the contents of that shrine fell into the ocean . . . kind of a sacrifice, or tribute, to their god(s).

Are they up to par? What about English, do the natives speak English?

I remember from our lunch conversation that Marty was saying he was always hungry, due to the heavy diet of rice and vegetables. (Probably due to a lot of physical acitivity while surfing as well, which makes a man mighty hungry.)

Ken Davis: You’re aware you are in a Third World country, but the people are so happy and it’s such a peaceful atmosphere . . . it doesn’t matter a whole lot.

Bali is trying to catch up with the rest of the world in order to appeal to the tourist trade. You see lots of Aussies here, lots of Germans, Swedes, Norwegians, Danes. Not all that many Americans, at least while we were there.

Every morning, they clean the beaches, rake them up . . . it’s, in many ways, typical of many Third World countries . . . but they are on the front edge of catching up. I never heard of or saw any surfing location where the water was dirty, no pollution, run off, etc.

Restrooms? At any of the restaurant and hotels - it’s basically the same as here. Some of the motels don’t have hot water, but it’s so warm there, you often don’t need warm water.

In spite of the humid climate, we didn’t notice any unusual number of mosquitos or bugs.

Scott Davis: “I spoke Javanese . . but they speak mostly Bahusu. I didn’t find that many that spoke English. In Kuta and along Kuta beach, you had fairly good English. Inland, not so much.

You could take a ferry to Lombok . . . a more remote area. Great diving place, great surf spots . .

Lombok is even cheaper. It’s a little bit more primitive . . . maybe two five star hotels . . . still the smaller hotels are nice. Clean.

Great, happy people. It’s a 1 to 1.5 hour ferry ride.

First thing we did was buy sun glass leashes to keep the sun glasses around your head. Reason?

Monkeys will come out of the tree and steal your sunglasses. The majority of people visiting Bali are Aussies or Kiwis (New Zealanders) . . . 70% of tourists are Aussie . . . a smattering of Europeans and Americans.

There are plenty of jungles and trails to go exploring, a great golf course, there’s a couple active volcanos in Bali . . and their fantastic Bali West National Park. A great golf course, as well.

What’s the night life like?

Ken Davis: Well, as I said before, there are a lot of Swedish, Norwegian and Australian tourists. The local girls go to the clubs as well.

They seem to go nuts over Americans; lots of blondes . . you probably see more Australians than other nationalities, but Brazilians are also well represented.

We really didn’t do much night clubbing or girl-chasing. Most of us had girl friends back home . . . and we didn’t come all this way for girls. We wanted to surf. We didn’t pay much attention to the women.

We mostly dealt with Hindus . . .a very gentle and very spiritual people. There was incense burning almost everywhere . . . many temples and shrines.

Scott Davis: The people there are very friendly. The Balinese women have no problem opening up and initiating a conversation with you. Some of these girls are, however, ‘working girls.’ Locally, they are known as 'Kupu Kupu Malam'. (night butterfly girl).

They are good looking women and they are all over the place.

There are, however, a number of transgender folks there as well.

Kinda spooky. I had heard that the going rate for the ‘butterfly girls’ was $20.

The downtown scene is not sketchy, like in Mexico. People are Hindu and nice people. They watch your back.

I remember taking Kenny to the Sari Club, this is the club that was later bombed in 2002. 200 people were killed, mostly Aussies. That, however, was long after we had visited. I understand there is very little violence there today.

Marty Madison: I enjoyed it.

The people are great. I had a great time. Never felt threatened at any time. (This was the second trip for Marty, the third for Tyler.

Tyler has been surfing with his dad almost since the day he first learned to walk. Whenever Tyler

visits North County, he and his dad are sure to be found surfing together, usually with Marty’s faithful and loving dog, Klyde.)

What were room rates and restaurants like?

Marty Madison: We paid $1214 a day for a basic room with bathroom and fan; all have swimming pools. If you go a bit higher, from $20 to $30 per day, you’ll get air conditioning, and a tv set, $100 per night and up gets you are really plush facilities.

Recently, when Evelyn Madison, Marty’s mom, myself, and Marty were dining at Dini’s Restaurant in Carlsbad, Evelyn had ordered Mahi-Mahi. Marty told his mom that plate, for which we paid around $28,

Scott Davis: We stayed in hotels. We stayed at the Intercontinental, the Marriott, some other big chain, can’t remember the name now. A good hotel was $50-$75 per night, with private security, private beach, no hawkers on the beach. It was nice and cool.

When I’d go exploring I also stayed in back-pack places for $5 a night; they gave us breakfast of banana, papaya, mango and a waffle type thing, all included for $5.

The backpack place was kinda like a hostel; a nice room and fan.

Back in Kuta, typical food that I enjoyed was chicken kabob, satay, with peanuts, all served with rice maybe 75 cents. The upscale hotels had steak, fish, lobster, shrimp . . almost anything you wanted. And all cheap.

All four of our correspondents who had visited Bali agreed . . . the Balinese all seem to be happy, most of them speak quite a bit of English, and they’re very open and willing to visit with you.

Surprisingly, however, Ken Davis points out that there is very little seafood - though fresh fish is available daily, it’s not a top prioriy. Strange, since you are right on the ocean.

Most meals are some conglomeration of rice and vegetables, perhaps with bits of beef or pork.

We’d use them to get around town and to go exploring inland . . . where you find mostly rice paddies. If you rent them by the month, the cost drops to maybe $3 to $4 per day. They are all kept in good repair, they run forever, and the fuel is cheap there.”

As to where to surf? Marty Madison: “We surfed all over the coast; there are lots of different spots. Some surfing spots can get crowded so you just have to find those that are least crowded.”

Ken Davis: “We’d surf, go back to the hotel for a nap, or to eat, or to rest up, then head back out to surf some more. It’s one of the world’s best surfing spots so you want to get all the surfing in you can.”

Page 4 - October 4, 2012 Bank Robbery Suspect Sought in Carlsbad Authorities were looking for a gunman who held up a bank Wednesday afternoon in Carlsbad, police said.

The suspected robber, described as a white man, wearing a ski mask, dark shirt and carrying a black handgun, went into the U.S. Bank at 7730 El Camino Real about 12:30 p.m., Lt. Marc Reno said.

The suspect was last seen heading south on El Camino Real, according to emergency radio traffic.

No other information was immediately available.

Spires Restaurant in Escondido Burns to the Ground The call came in at 2:35 a.m..

Spires Restaurant, near the corner of Ash and E. Valley Parkway, Escondido, was on fire.

Escondido firefighters responded and found the

Local News building totally engulfed in flames. They worked for hours to try and put out the flames but the building was gutted.

Joe Goncalves, owner of the restaurant, said he got a call from the alarm company about 2:30 a.m. saying that an alarm inside the restaurant had gone off and asking whether he wanted police to be dispatched.

The restaurant opened in 1987 and was popular with families, especially seniors, in the area. It served traditional American food.

Damage was extensive to the one-story freestanding building. Part of the roof collapsed, and much of the interior was blackened by the fire.

Oceanside Cab Companies Singing the Blues Owners of several cab companies that want to do business in Oceanside have started a petition drive to overturn new regulations that they say keep them out of the city.

One of the rules they are totally against, and which was adopted by the City Council earlier this month, the new rules say that a cab company that isn't licensed to do business in Oceanside can't drop off passengers in the city more than five times a month.

They claim it simply isn’t fair. Yellow Cab and 24.7 Taxi Cab are the only two companies licensed to do business in Oceanside.

Jenny Oakson, owner of Coastal Cab, which serves Camp Pendleton, Carlsbad, Encinitas and Solana Beach, Tri-City Cab owner John Agatep, Curtis Becker of Carlsbad West Taxi all said the new rules are unfair because they bring business into Oceanside from other cities. They argue they bring hundreds, if not thousands, of visitors to Oceanside each year and now the city wants to shut them out.

The other cab companies say it’s not as easy as simply getting a license. Restrictions require they own at least 10 cabs. Most have much less

Man About Town Took cousin Doug Leverenz for another visit to the Jalapeno Grill in Escondido Saturday evening. Regular readers know that this is one of our favorite eateries.

Regular readers also know that, often, restaurants have special ‘off-menu’ items that you have to ask for. (I don’t know why that is). In any event, we ordered the Tilapia.

As usual, Ray Alto, the genial owner of Jalapeno Grill (and La Tapatia Resaurant) was directing traffic, looking after his clientele, and stopping to chat from time to time.

Always an enjoyable visit and great meal at Jalapeno . . . plus we had the bonus of Jorge (George), our waiter, who knows us so well he doesn’t even need to bring a menu. He knows what we want to order. He just knows.

Earlier in the week we visited another of my favorite eateries, Sorrento’s, the fabulous Italian restaurant in San Marcos. This time, however, Evelyn and I were in the company of one of the world’s five most beautiful women, Dawn Grant, the head honcho (or is it honcha?) for Geico Insurance in the San Marcos and Escondido area. I have to admit to a certain glow of

I can guarantee they weren’t looking at me . . . here I was with not one, but two beautiful women, entering the great Italian eatery. I reckon all of the observers must have thought I was someone special, to be escorting two such lovelies.

As always, the food was superb, as was the company.

A lot of good-hearted laughter. Can you believe it? We even managed to talk some business!

Carlsbad Police Investigate Stabbing On Tuesday, Oct. 2nd, at 2:38 a.m., the City of Carlsbad Police Department received a call from Tri-City Hospital regarding a stabbing victim.

The victim told police officers the incident occurred in the area of Las Flores Drive and Pio Pico Drive in Carlsbad.

After interviewing the victim, investigating officers tracked and arrested 19 year old Drew Davidson of Carlsbad at 3:21 a.m. in the 6500 block of Paseo Frontera in Carlsbad.

An additional suspect, 20 year old Dylan Maldonado of Carlsbad was arrested at 7:45 a.m. in the 2300 block of Cipriano Lane in Carlsbad.

Both suspects were known to the victim.The victim suffered non-life threatening injuries and was released from the hospital. recently. Escondido has a wide variety of excellent restaurants and one of the oldest is Charlie’s . . . a basic meat and potatoes restaurant with a lot of the Escondido business community meeting there for breakfast and lunch.

The pies there are super tasty and Charlie, or his daughter Susie, are usually there, looking after everyone to make certain the service is prompt and the food is delish.

Charlie Mitich has a fascinating background. Have a cup of coffee with him sometime and ask him to tell you about his experiences in WWII. He escaped from a Communist country, joined the Army, managed to get to America, and has been a successful businessman ever since. He tried to retire a couple times.

Couldn’t do it. He has to be busy and he’s good at what he does.

Following is an example of how the adjustable loan program works for a 62 year old, with a home valued at $300,000. The loan amount is $185,700.00. There is no mortgage to pay off, so all funds are available to use in a retirement planning strategy.

Shiley, long-time supporter of Palomar College and its students, has pledged $60,000 for a matching grant to the “Campaign for Student Success” at Palomar College.

Under the arrangement, Shiley will match all donations to the campaign one-forone up to $60,000 in order to accelerate fund-raising. The Campaign began October 1 for six weeks and will repeat each year. The first-year goal is $300,000 in unrestricted funds to support student success through scholarships, book grants and faculty grants.

The effort is a response to a period of economic difficulty when donations have failed to keep pace with increasing student need. “We are so pleased that The Shiley Foundation is providing this incentive to generate increased funds for our students,” said Palomar College President Robert Deegan. The campaign will focus on alumni, business owners and friends in the region. Candidates Forum, October 8th – Where do local city council and school board candidates stand on issues such as education, jobs and future growth? It’s safe to say that Polly’s long wait for a new home paid off, because she is now living the good life with a very loving family. Thanks for helping us spread the word about her!

We, The Paper, are a small weekly. If I had the budget there are a number of these talented folks I’d try to hire.

The North County Times was a good daily newspaper. We had tremendous admiration and respect for them. We hope the plans of the new owners will be to continue the fine traditions upon which The North County Times was built, along with its predecessors.

I had met Peter York, but did not know him well. Knew his predecessor, Dick High, very well. Loved the guy. A great publisher, always smiling, very wise. Miss him.

Have admired Kent Davy’s columns a great deal. I don’t ‘Commentary’ Cont. on Page 13 not only ruin our national monuments but to dispose of our national heritage and a clear outrage to the men who fought and died there to protect and preserve our form of Government.

Please print other articles that will alarm the American populace to the cancers of greed and self interest that will not only disgrace and possibly dispose of our national monuments but will ultimately put the middle class in the poor house by their greed for so called profit.

Currently, children’s dental benefits are part of the Essential Health Benefit packages that must be sold, but adult dental benefits are called “supplemental,” and the Exchange could choose not to offer them. The California Dental Association and other organizations have encouraged the Board that offering adult benefits to consumers and small businesses will allow the Exchange to be the central location for comprehensive access for all members of the family.

The other key dental benefits question relates to stand-alone plans.

They must decide

whether to offer children’s dental benefits alone, or integrate them with their medical benefits, or both. If they offer both options, this can ensure consumers a variety of plans, enhancing competition in the marketplace, and help lower fees for us, the consumers. Of course, this is the purpose of the Act, to attempt to enhance competition and/or provide us all with healthcare coverage.

So, what does all this mean to you as a patient? We’re the first to admit that we’re not insurance advisors when it comes to health and dental insurance, however, our office does have 30+ years experience of helping our patients with their insurance billings and… because of the lack of solid parameters regarding these new programs, if you currently have a dental insurance program or health insurance program covering some dental treatments (ie. surgery, implants, etc.) we’d highly

recommend using what you have left of it now, before you lose it! In fact, with some plans you would even be wiser coordinating your treatment done this year, with any anticipated additional treatment needed next year, and have that treatment done just after January 1st... taking advantage of your current benefits BEFORE things change!

We’re not here to panic anyone… but with the current state of economics our government (us) has us in, benefits that are called “supplemental” in the new health reform program, could be on a short path to the “chopping block” if things continue to get worse. Government payments for dental treatment have ceased historically during our country’s financially difficult times.

Of course, these recommendations DO NOT APPLY with regards to our representatives in government … we’re just not sure why not?!

Escondido welcomed some distinguished guests Monday evening.

Tim and Marie Cunning hosted a dinner at their palatial estate for four Ethiopian dignitaries (see photo, names and titles at right).

The group is visiting America under the auspices of the US State Department, to exchange information about how best to deal with the growing problem of human trafficking.

Without their offices assistance, many Ethiopians might well be lured into accepting jobs out of country that were ultimately not as promised, some of which result in virtual slavery. These gentlemen help ensure Ethiopians accepting work outside the country are treated fairly, humanely, and legally.

They meet and confer with their American counterparts to learn and refine techniques to prevent trafficking and to rescue, rehabilitate, and reintegrate victims of trafficking. They have, or will have, visited Washington, D. C., San Diego, Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Buffalo, New York. They return to Ethiopia on October 14th.

Mr. Cunning was recently elected to the position of Lieutenant Governor for Division 37 of CalNevHa Kiwanis.

Mrs. Cunnning, originally from Mexico, often hosts gatherings for international guests.

Their home has come to be a gathering place for community and world leaders, and, quite often, most interesting people with lively conversation.

Vista • Mayor Judy Ritter Recently, CA State Insurance Commissioner Jones visited the city of Vista urging residents to prepare for the danger of wildfire in the upcoming fall months. Following are tips that Vista Fire and the Commissioner offered that may help to protect homes against wildfire.

1. Maintain a defensible area of 100 feet around your home. This means no vegetation that is easily susceptible to fire.

2. Remove dead or dying trees/shrubs.

Trim branches so they do not extend over the roof or near the chimney. Do not connect wooden fencing directly to your home.

3. Check to see if your home insurance is enough to actually replace your home at the replacement cost value. Many people who lost their homes in the 2003 and 2007 fires were under-insured and did not have the insurance they needed to rebuild.

4. Before catastrophe strikes, take a home inventory: lists, photos, or videotape of the contents of your home. Create a family emergency plan and designate an emergency meeting place for your family to reunite if you become separated.

San Marcos • Mayor Jim Desmond City Approves New Zoning Ordinance For the past two years, the city has been hard at work updating its general plan document. A general plan is a city’s blueprint for development and growth, and the latest version will guide San Marcos for the next two decades.

The newly adopted general plan will guide the city towards its new horizons with a clear focus for plans related to land use, mobility, open space, resource conservation and safety.

As part of this update, the city was required to update its zoning ordinance in order to bring that docu-

ment in line with the new general plan. A zoning ordinance outlines land use designations throughout the community --- many of which were modified by the new general plan. It also defines permitted uses within each of these designations; restrictions, such as height limitations; procedures for handling nonconforming uses; and the procedure for granting amendments, variances and hearing appeals.

Both the general plan and the zoning ordinance updates went through extensive public hearings to ensure that they reflected the desires of the community at-large.

No nationality, race, sex or profession escapes. Everyone is a member of some group that serves as the butt for someone else’s humor. This humor generally seizes on some perceived group attribute, (Scots are miserly, lawyers are weasels, rednecks and blondes are dumb, Irish are drunks, politicians are crooks, etc.) and builds a caricature around that feature. So it is with “Appleheads” AKA Apple “fanboys” and the Internet is rife with jokes and parodies lampooning “fanboy’s” fervor for Apple’s products.

The caricature of the true “Applehead” has him lining up to buy any new Apple product the day of release.

New Law Will Improve California’s ELL Curriculum There is significant room for improvement for our state’s English Language Learner (ELL) curriculum and last week Governor Brown signed a bill that will develop more effective ELL education.

Assembly Bill 1710 will require the State Department of Education to review criteria and design new instruction materials for English Language Learners.

Many of California’s students who are classified as ELL do not advance to the English language level needed to excel after public school. Without a strong foundation in English, in both reading and writing, some ELL students graduate from high school at a competitive disadvantage within the workforce compared to their fellow graduates.

The naively trusting nature of iPhone users was demonstrated on the Sept 13 Jimmy Kimmel Show. Kimmel took an iPhone 4 to the streets telling iPhone users that it was the new iPhone 5 and asking them how it compared to their own iPhone 4.

Universally the Apple users found the phony iPhone 5 to be faster, lighter bigger and brighter than their own iPhone 4. Blind trust is a powerful asset. Does Apple deserve it?

A lot of Dutch were residents; still a great many there. When that areas was known as the Dutch East Indies and their Dutch East Indies Trading Company, a lot of Dutch folks came over and just stayed.. I’d like to go back someday . . . cheap when you’re therer . . . costly air fares to get there and back . . . but I’d love to go back.

There were parties and drinking most every night, but we saw no brawls. We didn’t do a lot of the night life. Usually, we were too tired from a busy day of surfing.

Bali is just a really good, nice place to go. The weather is great, it’s safe, the people are great. I never felt threatened and you can’t get any better waves. It’s a big surfing destination.”

Ken Davis - I went there in December, 2001 - surf breaks are crowded these days - back then, not so bad. I stayed at one of the larger hotels, I think it was the Hilton, but time dims the memory. I remember it was dirt cheap; I remember the food. At dinner one night . . . we had appetizers, a great meal, a couple bottles of wine, it was not more than $30 for three of us. This was at the restaurant at the hotel.

Marty Madison: Sure. It takes a bit of time to save up the money, but, yes, I’ll go back.

I saw a lot of lizards, Monitor lizards, I think . . .some creepy crawlies, no danger, just a curiousity.

Tyler Madison: “I pretty much live there now; have opened my own business. I’m coming home for about 30 days for Thanksgiving and Christmas, but plan on returning to Bali. I love it there.

We stayed for two weeks of surfing and would surf till exhausted . . go to the hotel to sleep, then more surfing . . . we’d go out and find the waves. The waves were fantastic one of the best in the world. Great memories.

Ken Davis: “I’d love to go back.

But, the plane fare is expensive . . . and now that I have my beautiful daughter, Alex, I’m reluctant to leave her for any length of time.

So, do I want to go back? Yes. Will I? Dunno. Time, money, and circumstance will decide.”

Getting there is a long haul. We went to Tokyo, Singapore, where we stayed overnight, then to Jakarta and, finally, to Bali.

Memories? Marty Madison: After so much surfin and sun, you find other things to do. You travel around the towns and country on your scooter, sight-see, go exploring, shop.

Singapore was a real treat. I would have loved to stay there longer. We visited Sumatra on the same trip. Two weeks in Bali, two weeks in Sumatra.

Bali is to Aussies as Hawaii is to us. Their paradise. Three hour trip. For us? 22 hour flights!

Still, I’m ready to go back!

‘Commentary’ Cont. from Page 7 think I’ve ever seen a more beautiful essay than that which he wrote when his late wife passed away. It is said you can see into a man’s soul by reading his writings. I believe that is true . . . and that essay alone told me Kent Davy is a classy, sensitive, and very talented guy.

Irv Erdos? I’ve admired his work for ages. Same with David Garrick, the late John Doornan (with whom I often disagreed . . . but, oh, how that man could write!), John Maffei, Jim Trageser, (another writer with whom I would occasionally disagree . . but always admired the deft turn of phrases he’d lay down), so many talented folks.

The North County Times was, and hopefully will remain, a daily. We are a weekly. They could do things that we couldn’t do . . but we could also do things they could not do. The combination seems to work out well for the North County readers.

Technically, we are competitors for the same readers and the same advertising dollars.

But, we are also colleagues and we seem to be friends.

Rumors are that the North County Times will be downsized and its staff moved to the San Marcos UT offices; the other rumor is that the UT staff in San Marcos will move into the beautiful North County Times building.

Whether the new entity, whatever that turns out to be, remains focused on local and community news, we just don’t know. Perhaps it will focus more on regional news and the San Diego metropolitan areas? Again, we just don’t know. Right now, it’s a big guessing game.

I’m hoping we can retain a lot of the “old” North County Times. It’s been a pleasure having them as friends, colleagues, as well as competitors.

To those who do leave our community . . “well done!”
