The Flying Tigers. We reproduce some of that story here, and tip our hats to those who flew . . . many of our readers weren’t even born when these battles took place. To those we say, read, learn, and remember the debt we all owe: ••••• One shining hope has

The hundred or so young men of then Flying Tigers have several tremendous assets: 1) they have had up to six years of military flying and they have an instinctive feel for what their machines will do; 2) they have been blooded in the air and 3) they are always looking for a fight.

The result was bound to be something extremely painful to anybody who ran into them. On their first meeting, they actually lost four planes

A.V.G. is usually fighting defensive air actions - i.e., breaking up Jap bomber formations protected by Jap fighters. These Jap fighters are not quite as fast as the American Tomahawks but they climb and maneuver better. Oddly enough, Jap bombers are faster than fighters and the only way the Americans can get them is to gain altitude and gather extra speed diving on them.

The unoriginal Japs are, for the most part, flying American planes.

Their bombers are home-made copies of ours, with modifications which are not always improvements.

Pilot William Evart Bartling, 27, of Middletown, Ind., son of contractor, graduated from Purdue in 1938, worked with Carnegie Steel Co., entered U.S. Navy in 1940, was crack dive bomber on the Wasp. Two brothers are Ford engineers.

Pilot Henry M. Geselbracht Jr., 25, of St. Louis, was Beta Theta Pi at Washington University and U.C.L.A., graduated in 1939, flew at Long Beach and Pensacola and for movie Dive Bomber. He first rode in plane at 16 at Chicago World's Fair.

Squadron Leader James H. Howard, 29, Haverford School, Pomona College (1937), was born in China, captured by Chinese bandits at 12 with his eminent doctor-father, Jim escaped. He was dive bomber on Enterprise. He speaks Chinese.

Flight Leader Edward F. Rector, 25, from a mountain farm outside Marshall, N.C., likes to grow tobacco and corn, went to Catawba College, learned to fly with the U.S. Navy. A quiet, hardworking country boy, he is well-liked by everybody.

Flight Leader Noel Richard Bacon, 24, is son of lady mayor of little Randalia, Iowa. He was Boy Scout, played basketball and clarinet, went to Iowa Teachers College, became Navy flier at Pensacola. Like most of others, he is unmarried.

The Road Show. These are the vendors that come in and give away free food. One can have a free lunch and/or dinner if one plans his tours of Costco properly. And you don't even have to wear a bib. I do, however, always dress for dinner. Usually shorts, sandals, polo shirt and a big smile.

Reasons I hate shopping at Costco.

Prices. Lots of items at very good prices.

Variety. Wide variety. Hard goods, produce, meats,

The requirement to buy two, or three, or four, or six of something . . . when all you need is one.

Today, for example, I wanted to pick up mouthwash. You can only buy mouthwash in a two-bottle pack.

That's enough to give a battalion of Marines kissy-sweet and fresh breath for a month.

I wanted to pick up bags of those inexpensive, throwaway razors. Costco doesn't stock 'em. Only the package of six for $21. Don't want 'em. Want my 'el cheapos.'

An Open Letter to the Mayor and City Council of Escondido Dear Mayor Abed Council Members:

My name is Ken Myers. I know many of you from my involvement with Rotary and other service organizations in Escondido.

I’m writing because I’m concerned with the circumstances of Chief Jim Maher’s removal from office. He told me directly that he was forced to retire, and I have it through second hand information that it is the consequence of friction with the City Manager.

This is where my problem lies: I’m a retired Marine Corps Colonel. I’ve ordered investigations; as an officer I conducted investigations, and it is clear to me how investigations are conducted. When the Chief was suspended “to protect him” because he reported possible misconduct, I was skeptical. I had never heard of such a bizarre procedure. The citizens of the city Shave twice/three times, throw 'em away. Not at Costco. Have to go to CVS to get them.

Wanted to get ONE bottle of Margarita mix. Nope. Have to buy a two-pack. One bottle would last me a year. Two bottles would last me (checking my computer's calculator) . . . .um, two years.

Changing of specials.

A month ago I found a delightful pack of sliced, smoked salmon. Perfect for fixing up lox and bagels. A nice toasted bagel, with cream cheese, a slab of lox (salmon), a slice of onion, capers . . . makes for a nice breakfast or mid-day snack. Went back today planning on buying two or three packs of these delicious, smoked salmon. No longer in stock.

Speaking of bagels . . . I want to buy one bag of bagels.

Nope. You have to buy two.

I told the checker I only wanted one bag. "Okay," he says, "but I have to charge you for two." So I got two . . . and they last forever. (See indepth calculations for length of use under "Margaritas"

were told it could not be discussed because the investigation dealt with personnel issues. While skeptical, I trusted the integrity of city officials.

Now I know the Chief was forced to retire. That had nothing to do with the investigation into alleged misconduct. The City Manager and possibly others combined the two issues to obscure the real reason. He and the Mayor seemingly deceived the citizens, refusing to discuss the real reason for the Chief’s suspension by concealing that deception behind the claim it would interfere with the investigation. We now see that the suspension was a pretext to remove the Chief from office.

It looks to me like the citizens of the city were knowingly, willfully, and intentionally deceived. I’m still inclined to have confidence in the integrity of city officials, but need to have that faith restored. Would you please explain to me why my conclusion is not correct?

A little thing like frozen fruit bars . . . no longer stocked. A nice munchie at night . . . or mid-afternoon.

We wound up getting a box of fudgcicles and a box of ice cream sandwiches. We have high hopes that Costco will not discontinue these. After all, they are nutritious, healthful, no fat and no calories, and no sugar. At least, that's what I told Evelyn.

So often you find great products at Costco, you get used to it, look forward to buying more, only to have Costco stop stocking it.

I would lead a revolution to try and persuade Costco to change its ways . . . but I am older now . . . and tire more easily. My days of leading revolutions are behind me. I shall simply grin and bear it.

And eat twice as many samples.

That'll fix their wagon.

Bruno’s, Famed San Marcos Eatery, Closes Area residents were saddened to learn that Bruno’s Italian Restaurant, a popular fixture on San Marcos’ Restaurant Row since 1981, closed suddenly last week.

Its daily buffet was a favorite

among older diners. The whole restaurant atmosphere lent itself well to family gatherings, birthdays, anniversaries and corporate events.

Fabio Fanelli, son of owners Bruno and Maria Fanelli, said the restaurant’s last night serving the public was Oct. 25.

“We’d love to tell our customers, ‘Thank you for your support, from the bottom of our hearts,’” Fabio Fanelli added.

Amgen Tour of California hosted by Escondido?

November 13th is the day Escondido officials say they expect to find out whether the city will host the nation's largest bicycle race in May. Up to $475,000 has been budgeted to attract the honor of being the starting line “host” city for the annual Amgen Tour of California, which came to Escondido in 2009 but hasn't returned since.

In 2009, an estimated 40,000 people packed Grand

Avenue near the finish line, and an estimated 300,000 spectators watched at least part of the Escondido stage, which stretched from Rancho Bernardo to Palomar Mountain.

Both city officials and the business community are supportive of the event and have fingers crossed for a favorable decision.

North County Crime Blotter CARLSBAD: A wallet and phone were stolen from a 1995 Ford Ranger parked on Carlsbad Village Drive across from the Hilton hotel, a caller reported at 4:42 p.m. Oct. 28.

CARLSBAD: Two bicycles were stolen from a locked garage in the 900 block of Laguna Drive, states a report taken at 7:52 p.m.

Oct. 27. The thief apparently wrote “I took your bicycles” on a dry-erase board in the garage, the report states.

Painters Needed for Shelter Murals The Interfaith Emergency Winter Shelter is opening in mid-November. Volunteers have painted the walls and beds. Importing leadership outside of the city would not, in our view, preserve morale and cohesiveness in a police department troubled over Maher’s early and perhaps not entirely voluntary retirement.

That Jim Maher is eligible for retirement is unquestionable.

We’re just not that certain retirement is what he really wanted to do at this time.

Having served four years as a Military Policeman in the Marine Corps followed by 32 years in Escondido’s Police Department including 6 years as our Top Cop, Jim is only 57 years old. Assuming good health, one would think Jim good to go for another 10 years. He would certainly be capable.

‘Man About Town’ Cont. from Page 4 Dropped in on old friend, Ronnie Morris of Ronnie’s Service Centers at 207 East Valley Parkway in downtown Escondido, last week. He was busy checking the brakes on a client’s car. He showed me one of the disc brakes and pointed out a number of unusual indentations on the face of the disc. “Those shouldn’t be there,” he said.

“What’s causing them?” I asked.

“Look here” . . . and showed me the inside of the caliper.

Sure enough, there was a sharp burr on the inside of the caliper that had been digging into the disc.

“You’re a pretty good detective,” I said. “You’ve learned how to solve all kinds of mechanical mysteries, haven’t you?”

“Well, after 46 years in the business, I reckon I’ve learned a few things,” he smiled.

Rather than complaining about the very abrupt end of that article (I was flipping pages, looking for more, but there was no more), it crossed ‘Letters to the Editor’ Cont. on Page 13 and as a mechanic, as well as his wife, Diana, and all of his kids. I watched ‘em all grow up. Ronnie’s always been a smart, talented guy with plenty of good, solid ambition; attributes that have helped him grow his business to the success that it is.

Today, he’s got new customers that are children of his customers 46 years ago.

Their parents told them, “you want your car fixed properly?

The insurance company gave me a check for about $4500 to do the body work. I shopped around got several bids, one of which was from a nephew; he quoted around $4000 with new parts. Told him I just wanted it repaired. He estimated around $2600. I then took it to Ramon Gonzalez owner of ACM Auto Body & Paint, 1175 Industrial Avenue, Suite Y. He did the job for $1255.55, about a third of the insurance estimate and about half of what my nephew quoted. So much for family discounts. I picked up the car last Friday and Ramon had done a beautiful job. The car looked like it just came off the showroom floor.

I hope I don’t have any more fender benders, but if I do, guess where I’ll be taking my car? And mechanical problems? Guess where I’ll be going? And if I need a good late model used car? I know some top notch talent!

Neighborhood Leadership Program

San Marcos General Plan Wins Award

Last week, I had the honor of attending the graduation ceremony for the City of Escondido’s Neighborhood Leadership Program. 20 graduates received certificates and can now count themselves among the 150 alumni of this important program.

The eight-week Neighborhood Leadership Program is offered free of charge by the City’s Neighborhood Services Division, in partnership with Community Housing Works.

Participants range in age from teens to grandparents, all with the common goal of wanting to gain leadership skills and make their neighborhoods better places to live.

We are all very busy, and it’s not easy to commit to volunteering our time.

However, the investment of time into this program has achieved overwhelmingly positive results in our neighborhoods, and graduates set positive examples for their younger siblings, children and grandchildren.

The program teaches participants how to identify their existing talents and resources to create positive change in their community, how to strengthen interpersonal communication skills and how to effectively use technology as a practical and innovative tool to communicate and connect with people. In addition, they develop lasting friendships with their fellow participants. The Neighborhood Leadership Program is held annually each September. The City of San Marcos’ general plan update was recently awarded the 2012 Comprehensive Planning Award, Small Jurisdiction, from the American Planning Association (APA), San Diego Section, making it eligible for statewide recognition.

Microsoft W8 (Wait) Is Here “Ta-Da!” Microsoft announced the release of its latest operating system (OS) last week. While Microsoft calls it “Windows 8,” we think W8 (wait) is more appropriate. Most folks who innocently bought new PCs with W8 last week wished they’d W8ed. If you are one of those, feel free to take it back and insist on a PC with the Windows 7 OS. Microsoft and your retailer will understand completely, you see, W8 isn’t really made for PCs, at least not yet. W8 is for smart phones and tablets. So why does Microsoft insist that the major PC brands offer W8?

They have their reasons.

Historically, the sale of PC operating systems has been Microsoft’s

Vista was a huge flop and PC sales remained flat.

Windows 7 landed in November of 2009. It was well accepted and provided a real boost to PC industry sales and profits. W8 will not, nor is it expected to, have much impact on today’s slow PC sales. If Microsoft didn’t release W8 with the expectation that it would energize PC sales, why then?

Apple is finding that being the product “for people who don’t know any better” isn’t enough as increasingly savvy users recognize Apple’s technology lag.

Will the single platform W8 strategy enable Microsoft to become a significant hardware/software presence in the smart phone/tablet business?

It’s a gamble because it puts Microsoft in direct competition with some of its best customers.

Will Microsoft force PC makers to abandon Win 7 and ship only PCs with W8 as they have in the past?

We doubt it. Functionally W8 is Win 7 optimized for touch screen interface. Businesses won’t be impressed. Most home users will find no good reason to suffer through learning the W8 “Metro” desktop. We don’t think that touch screen technology for PCs is viable.

Hand motion recognition perhaps but who wants boogers on their PC screen?

So our recommendation on W8 is W8 and see.

PC desktop and notebook sales are slow, smart phone and tablet sales are booming. Microsoft hopes that W8 will provide a common platform for PCs, smart phones, tablets and gaming consoles enabling Microsoft to compete for hardware, software and advertising dollars. W8 is key to Microsoft’s upcoming Microsoft branded smart phone and just released tablet (Surface) entries.

Microsoft is moving into some very dynamic markets. The past couple of years have been notable for the

communities.

While complete recovery is far off, our response to this disaster can include not only aide to the displaced but also disaster preparedness education.

I was struck by the easy flowing text she presented us, about a sometimes complex subject. I marveled at how she could make someone like me understand finance. I asked her where she had taken her training as a writer.

She had never studied the art.

It is a God-given talent with her.

If all writers wrote as Laura writes, as if you are talking to your reader, we’d have a lot more interesting material to read.

Same is true of Paul Van Middlesworth and his computer columns; he, like Laura, is a natural writer.

You could be as well. Give it a shot.

The program is supported 100% by private donations and volunteer labor.

Each plate of food provided to the children would cost about 20 cents in America. One food packet feeds six kids. The program feeds 1100 kids a day, Monday through Friday, on weekends the kids are given food packets to take home so they have food for the weekend. The food is distributed at a community meeting center.

They fed over 4000 children during this past summer's visit.
