As an idea.

The idea: How could I, a notorious heathen, possibly comment upon the various Christian churches in North San Diego County? And to what purpose?

Well, the answer to the first question was easy. I would start going to church.

Regularly. Yes, I’m fully aware that many of my family and friends who know me and my often anti-cleric stands, who know of my many years of following Deism, and, more recently, the basic tenets of the Baha’i, would likely suffer fits of apoplexy (the old time word for cerebrovascular accident; seldom used anymore except by cranky old, curmudgeonly editors who enjoy confusing his readers with obsolete words.

Today, it generally means “a state of extreme rage or excitement.”) So far, none of my family or friends have suffered a fatal seizure at the mere mention of lyle crossing the threshold of a church.

The second question is also easy to address.

We, Evelyn and I, absolutely love Joel Osteen, the handsome, smiling, television preacher who appears in the San Diego market every Sunday morning at 9am on ABC television (KGTV). He is an eloquent speaker, well prepared, always inspiring, always with just enough humor to bring forth a chuckle or two as well as a frequent smile, if not outright laughter. And, wonder of wonders! He gives his total message within a 30 minute time period! Would that more pastors attained The Paper - 760.747.7119

that goal! All too many pastors are way too long winded . . . even the good ones.

Memo to Pastors: Keep your sermons to 30 minutes.

Maximum.

We absolutely love great preachers . . . such as the late Dr. Norman Vincent Peale, Dr. Robert Schuller, when he

was healthy and didn’t have the financial and family problems he’s faced with today.

Great, great speakers.

“Surely,” I thought, “we must have some outstanding, inspiring speakers in North San Diego County. Let’s go see if we can find us some.”

Well, there are.

Several pastors are outstanding speakers. Highly motivational, excellent senses of humor, and they have the talent to impart wisdom without you knowing you just went to school and learned something. Pretty sneaky, these guys.

But I learned a lot more by

In others, not so much.

For example, some of our pastors take the pulpit in blue jeans and a sport shirt, polo shirt, or in several cases, a tee shirt. They might wear sandals, or sneakers. (Jesus, as I recall, wore sandals). The congregation pretty much mirrors their pastor.

Some churches are ultra casual, ultra cool, others somewhere in between that mode and the traditional suit and tie for the pastor, perhaps covered with a majestic robe, and the congregants dressed up in their best ‘Sunday go to meetin’ clothes.” Kinda like the old days.

In some churches, musical groups, both instrumental and vocal, have taken the place of the more traditional choir. Other, more traditional churches, retain the choir.

I, personally, don’t care much for the contemporary ‘New Age’ Christian music. I prefer the traditional church hymns and, even more, good old gospel music. The contemporary music is generally aimed at the younger demographic.

The churches try to reach a broad spectrum, demographically, something for every age group and gender. Some churches are brilliantly organized and have grown like Topsy.

We have two or three local churches that are on the verge of becoming a “mega-church,” much like that of Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas.

The best local examples of this are the North Coast Church, with the main campus in Vista, and satellite campuses in Carlsbad and Fallbrook; and Emmanual Faith, based in Escondido, and possessing a large, imposing campus and plenty of adequate parking to welcome the sinners and saved alike. They also helped the Mission Hills Church in San Marcos form up and then become an indeRevelation 3:20 begins Behold, I stand at the door and knock.

Pastor’s Business Card A new pastor was visiting in the homes of his parishioners. At one house it seemed obvious that someone was at home, but no answer came to his repeated knocks at the door. Therefore, he took out a business card and wrote Revelation 3:20 on the back of it and stuck it in the door.

When the offering was processed the following Sunday, he found that his card had been returned. Added to it was this cryptic message, Genesis3:1 .

Reaching for his Bible to check out the citation, he broke up in gales of laughter.

Have you ever felt like strangling one of those 'loud mouthed' cell phone users who seem to sit near you in a restaurant or any other place and forcibly share their private call with you.

Here's one solution, provided by a commuter, to combat this display of bad manners.

After a very busy day, a commuter settled down in her seat and closed her eyes as the train departed Montreal for Hudson.

As the train rolled out of the station, the guy sitting next to her pulled out his cell phone and started talking in a loud voice: "Hi sweetheart it's Eric, I'm on the train - yes, I know it's the 6.30 and not the 4.30 but I had a long meeting - no, honey, not with that floozie from the accounts office, with the boss. No sweetheart, you're the only one in my life - yes, I'm sure, cross my heart" etc., etc.

Fifteen minutes later at St. Anne de Bellevue he was still talking loudly, when the young woman sitting next to him, who was obviously angered by

pendent entity, separate and distinct from their original parent.

Here then, is my journey amongst the North County Christian churches.

Obviously, I could not get to all of them. It took about three months of going to church every Sunday, sometimes twice on Sunday, in order to survey these churches. We list the churches in our order of preference . . . churches that, if we were to become a Christian, we would be most likely to join, and the reasons why we like that particular church. Most often . . . it’s the personality of The Pastor . . . I guess Eric doesn't use his cell phone in public any longer.

How To Stop Church Gossip Mary, the church gossip, and self-appointed monitor of the church's morals, kept sticking her nose into other people's business.

Several members did not approve of her extra-curricular activities, but feared her enough to maintain their silence.

She made a mistake, however, when she accused Frank, a new member, of being an alcoholic after she saw his old pickup parked in front of the town's only bar one afternoon.

She emphatically told Frank (and several others) that everyone seeing it there would know what he was doing!

Frank, a man of few words, stared at her for a moment and just turned and walked away.

He didn't explain, defend, or deny.

He said nothing..

Later that evening, Frank quietly parked his pickup in front of

Pastor Harry Kuehl is one of the finest, most dynamic communicators I've ever heard. Very much on a par with Joel Osteen in his ability to weave stories in and out of his sermon, as well as interjecting frequent humor pieces.

His style, delivery and message keeps you on the edge of your seat, awaiting his next tasty morsel of wisdom or humor.

Many readers will remember both the church and Pastor Kuehl as he presided at the Memorial Service for Chelsea King, following her tragic murder.

The Church is also very active in the community having coordinated an effor that resulted in the packing of one million meals in just two days, collaborating with and supporting Friends and Family Community Connection (FFAC).

The Vet Hat A few days ago a friend of mine sent me a 'Vietnam Veteran' hat.

I never had one of these before and I was pretty hyped about it, especially because my friend was considerate enough to take the time to give it to me.

Yesterday, I wore it when I went to Wal-Mart.

There was nothing in particular that I needed at the world's largest retailer but, since I retired, trips to Wally World to look at the Walmartians is always good for some comic relief. Besides, I always feel pretty normal after seeing some of the people that frequent the establishment. But, enough of my psychological fixes.

While standing in line to check out, the guy in front of me, probably in his early thirties, asked, "Are you a Vet Nam Vet?" "No," I replied.

"Then why are you wearing that hat?"

Meals are divided between the hungry in Tanzania, Haiti and San Diego. Recipient organizations include the Salvation Army, San Diego Rescue Mission and Father Joe’s Villages.

Lead pastor Harry Kuehl said his pastoral team decided this project would be a good way for their 3,500 congregants to “be the answer,” a phrase that has guided the church’s outreach efforts over the past year.

It’s a large, impressive church with a dynamite preacher.

My clear favorite of all the churches I’ve attended over the past three months.

This nondenominational church was founded in 1992.

The church has a congregation size of 3000, a staff of 40 (including part-time). Sunday school enrollment: 500 Dress: casual to semiformal Diversity: majority Caucasian, but mixed Sunday worship: 9 a.m., 11 a.m.

Lead Pastor Hal Seed

This is a great church with a superb pastor.

This visit almost didn’t happen.

I had, I thought, pretty much completed my research and had what I thought was a fair and representative sample of North County Churches.

At the last mniute I decided to visit one more church, the New Song Community Church.

I’m glad I did.

Pastor Jim Britts gave the sermon and he was brilliant.

Lots of humor, common sense, illustrative stories, modern parables and, of course, scripture.

Housed in a building that is large (it used to be a Dixiline Lumber location), it has multiple service centers and rooms to meet, rooms for infants, group rooms . . a lot of room.

They have about 1500 members and provide four services every weekend.

Music is mostly Contemporary but some good old gospel as well (they performed, for example, “How Great Thou Art,” a classic gospel song).

Pastor Britts was filling in for Hal Seed, the Lead Pastor who is on a leave of absence in order to catch up on his studying, reading, and completion of a new book.

Pastor Britts did an outstanding job of filling in. I thought at the time, “if this man is a substitute and is this great, what must the Lead Pastor be like?” I intend to find out, whenever Pastor Seed returns. Pastor Britts is strong enough he could well pastor his own church.

And I’d attend, just to hear him again. Very, very well done.

We saw Chris Brown deliver the service. Superb speaker, great sense of humor, very casually dressed (as were the

congregants, for the most part).

The church was packed solid. Plenty of parking, lots of friendly volunteers to help guide you into parking and to point you in the right direction. Cafe’, coffee, snack stands, and plenty of tables outside to sit and chat with your family and friends. Very warm, loving feeling. Terrific sermon.

Music is generally contemporary, but very, very well done.

North Coast Church is currently the largest church in the Evangelical Free Church of America with over 9,000 in weekend attendance. The main campus is located in Vista, California, with two nearby Video Venue campuses located in the cities of Carlsbad and Fallbrook.

Known for its innovation and strong emphasis on Bible teaching, North Coast is organized around small groups, most of which are Sermon-based. These groups (which North Coast calls Growth Groups) meet weekly to dig deeper into the previous weekend’s teaching and text with an emphasis on application and building community among the members.

The participation rate in these small groups has exceeded 80% of average adult weekend attendance every year since 1985.

In 1998, North Coast pioneered the concept of Video Venues, which helped to spawn and propagate the spread of the so-called multisite movement among megachurches. Birthed out of rapid growth and a shortage of worship space and time slots, the idea was to provide simultaneous worship experiences offering a variety of worship styles - yet all sharing in the same message and sermon either live or via a video feed. Currently, members can choose from over 22 worship options each weekend; each with its own unique worship style, time slot or location.

Over the years, North Coast has received numerous awards including recognition as one of America’s Ten Most Influential Churches (Church Report’s Annual Survey of Large Church Pastors), one

of American’s Most Innovative Churches (Outreach Magazine), and has consistently ranked as one of the 100 largest churches in the country (Outreach Magazine’s, Outreach 100).

Chris Brown has served as a Senior Pastor and Teaching Pastor at North Coast Church since 2004. A gifted story teller and Bible teacher, Chris' humor and motivational style have made him a highly sought after conference speaker.

North Coast is highly involved in local community service, averaging nearly two service projects a day. Pastor Chico, as he is known, is a dynamic speaker with the ability to blend in both contemporary and biblical stories to illustrate a spiritual point he wants to make.

Little Girl Wins Big Computer at Lincoln School Attendance Promotion

Swift work by Escondido police resulted in the arrest of a tagger accused of vandalizing the Ash Street underpass.

Principal Barbara Sanchez of Lincoln School in Escondido donned a clown’s outfit and climbed up on the roof of the school to announce the winner in a drawing from a container with 117 names of students who had perfect attendance this year.

Every year I say the same damned thing.

I need to follow up on it.

Every year, when we enjoy our timeshare week at Tamarack Beach Resort in Carlsbad, right on the beach, I wonder to myself, "why don't I come back here more often? I'm always so relaxed when I come here."

The teenage vandal who left extensive graffiti in the newly opened Ash Street undercrossing along the Escondido Creek was a 15-year-old boy who was arrested Wednesday, a day after a city official reported the graffiti.

Escondido police Detective J. Norris said he responded to the graffiti report Tuesday, finding tagging crew names and graffiti monikers in the underpass. Norris recognized one of the names, connecting it to a juvenile offender with whom police had recently conducted a probation check.

“We went and talked to him. ... and he admitted to doing it,” Norris said.

Minor I don't think there's a much more relaxing state than to be sitting or strolling at the beach, on the beach itself or on its boardwalk, and just watching the waves roll in . . and listening to the sound.

Whenever I find a cozy spot to sit down and just watch the ocean . . . I unwind rather quickly. I feel good. The salty air smells good . . . the sights of the many pedestrians walking or jogging, many with their pups, of the bicyclists . . . all come together to make for a pleasant atmosphere.

Carlsbad would be a great place to live. It's just a different atmosphere and lifestyle there. Lots of tourists, yes, but the locals make the atmosphere relaxed, casual, fun, and healthy.

We checked in Friday night, had a great dinner with Marty Madison, Evelyn's youngest son, and his girl friend, Kim. Marty had just returned from a month long stay in Bali, Indonesia. His son, Tyler, is still there . . . probably till

sometime in the late summer/early fall. Both Marty and his son are avid surfers and Bali is a great place to surf. It's also a great spot to vacation . . . but it's a 21 hour plane ride. Tyler was working, doing light agricultural work, planting trees and the like, in return for room and board and a scooter for transport. The scooters, kind of like a Vespa, rent for about $5-6 a week. It's the principal mode of transport in Bali. He was working for a non-profit foundation which has since closed its doors. Not sure what he's gonna work at now, but he'll find something. He will have been there for six months when he comes back home.

Activists Against Puppy Mills Plan Protest Against Veterinarian’s Office On Tuesday of this week, the Animal Defense Team, an activist organization based in San Diego County that is opposed to Puppy Mills, staged a protest outside the offices of Dr. Roberto Osawa, a veterinarian who the ADT claims supports the online and pet store sales of puppies in San Diego, many of which had been obtained via Puppy Mills based in the midwest. Puppy mills typically overbreed a great many dogs that are left in cages most of their lives, living in miserable conditions, and serving as little more than dogs that become pregnant again and again and again.

Both Evelyn and I had a superb night's sleep, got up Saturday morning, had breakfast at one of our favorite restaurants, picked up the pups and took them for a walk on the boardwalk.

They loved it. I weigh over 200 lbs and that little 15 lb.

Trixie pulled me like a sled dog along the boardwalk. I finally had to sit down, I was plumb tuckered out . . . and that's when I really began to savor the sight and sound of the ocean.

While attending Palomar Community College he found his spiritual life and then began his studies at Talbot School of Theology at Biola University in La Mirada, California, spending the the next eight years working part-time at Emmanuel Faith Community Church as an intern while driving to Talbot. It took awhile, but he two earned eventually Masters Degrees.

The church is located on a beautiful 32 acre campus, it has grown to over 1,300 people on a Sunday.

The pastor, Sam Brumit, is a powerful, dynamic, interesting speaker. I know him fairly well and consider him a good friend. He has the abili-

ty to convey a message but interweave that message with what I call contemporary parables and the occasional elements of humor.

Collectively, his sermons are rather enjoyable. My only complaint . . and this is true of many churches . . . he features Contemporary Christian music, (some call it “New Age”). The vocal artists and instrumentalists are great . . but that genre of music leaves me absolutely cold.

Client friends of mine, who are members of the congregation, feel the same way.

Mary, my ex-wife, and Scott, my eldest son, attend the church . . . but they often arrive 20 minutes late intentionally, just so they miss the New Age Christian Music boring, repetitive music.

They come to hear Pastor Sam’s message, not the music.

I advised them that not only would we NOT support a recall, but that we would actively oppose such an effort.

Commentary Regular readers of The Paper are aware that we have been quite critical of Escondido’s Mayor, Sam Abed, both for his support of the now dead Minor League Baseball Park issue, as well as the recent debacle where Escondido City Manager Clay Phillips awared $200,000+ raises to Department heads . . . and Mayor Sam and his Council majority did nothing to correct what, to many of us, appeared to be a gross error in judgment.

Recently, we were contacted by parties of substantial means and influence within the Escondido and North County area and they suggested a recall effort was in order.

The fact is, Mayor Sam Abed is a good man. He works hard, does his homework, and serves his community well. We simply disagree on several key areas.

No one, least of all us, will ever find a legislator with whom we agree with 100% of the time. There will always be disagreements. But you do NOT utilize the recall process unless and until the political actions are egregious in nature. That is not the case here.

What is the case here is that we have Mayor Sam and his council majority apparently refusing to listen to concerned citizens and responding to their concerns. It’s fine for Mayor Sam to strongly believe in his policies and principles . . . it’s quite another to be so hard headed that one is unwilling to examine ‘Commentary’ Cont. on Page 13

Lots of smiles.

I suggested to Evelyn that we think about moving to Carlsbad but she put the kibosh on that quickly. She has too many friends, is involved in too many Escondido activities. That's true . . . but I still would kinda like to live in Carlsbad.

We'll see what happens.

Busy day Saturday. . . granddaughter Alex's first birthday party . . . then rush home to change clothes for a big dinner gala our noon club, Escondido Kiwanis, put on. (Can you believe it? I actually put long pants on! And shoes! And socks! Horror of horrors! I abandoned my tennis shorts, polo shirt and Birkenstock sandals!)

A big fund raiser. $100 per ticket got you dinner, great entertainment, (a troupe of Polynesian dancers put on a great show. Colorful costumes, great choreography, great toe-tapping music) and, they gave away a grand prize of $5,000, 2nd of $2500, third of $1000 and a number of $500 gifts.

I won $500 about three years ago . . . but, sad to say, neither Evelyn nor I won any cash prizes that night.

The fundraiser for the Escondido Kiwanis Club will net them around $40,000. Quite successful.

And all that money goes back into community service . . .

Kiwanis payback for providing such a wonderful community in which to live.

That’s the one week of the year when I wish I didn't have to put out a newspaper.

According to ADT, Dr. Osawa is the veterinarian of record for San Diego Puppy, an online and storefront puppy seller. They allege he was also affiliated with the stores Puppy Stars and Pet Place that were raided by the San Diego Humane Society on March 27.

The San Diego Animal Defense Team, a grassroots group of local animal advocates, questions why any veterinarian would choose to be a partner with such an inhumane and cruel industry.

They asked him to sign the Compassionate Vet Pledge from Prisoners of Greed, a national organiztion that is also working to stop the sale of puppy mill puppies. They said they have written Dr. Osawa twice and warned him if he continued to work with the puppy mill pet stores, they would need to include him in their campaign of protests. He did not respond,

Emery is a 1-year-old neutered male Chihuahua mix, ID 63541. Emery is deaf, but he doesn't seem to see it as a handicap at all. He's a friendly little guy, to humans and other dogs, and he is a frequent visitor to the shelter’s Canine Good Citizen classes.

He has a volunteer pal who is starting to teach him some simple commands using hand signals, and he seems eager to learn using his other senses instead. Emery will thrive in a calm household where his life won't be full of surprises, but he'll make someone a great walking companion (on a leash) and cuddle pal.

Our biotech sector is renowned throughout the world, and our high tech sector is producing game changing technologies such as wireless health devices.

One of my personal favorite success stories is our brewtech sector, which has gone from 4 microbreweries to 10 in the last year. Beyond producing delicious, award winning beers, for every direct job out local breweries produce, they also create more than 5 indirect jobs.

I was proud to share San Diego’s success in forging public-private partnerships that have lead to nationally recognized clusters, espe-

Vista • Mayor Judy Ritter The Vista Fire Department is introducing a volunteer program to help with day-to-day administrative services, as well as emergency incident support. The Senior Volunteer Program is designed to recruit and train persons aged 50 and older to support the department’s operations. The volunteers will contribute essential non-firefighting assistance to the fire department.

Examples of volunteer responsibilities include picking up and delivering supplies and mail between fire stations; fire prevention education; assisting with the Smoke Alarm Program; providing support such as hydration and food to firefighters at fires and other extended emergency

In other news, the City’s 2012/13 budget has been adopted by the City Council and outlines all of the spending planned for the upcoming fiscal year. The City’s General Fund budget is $62.5 million. The general fund is the main fund and includes revenues for services such as public safety (police and fire), city parks, recreation activities, programs and community services, and public works.

The City’s 2012/13 fiscal year will begin on July 1, 2012 and is available at cityovista.com/departments/finance.

There are many activities planned this summer in San Marcos for your entire community to come out and enjoy. Oceanside • Mayor Jim Wood Race Across America In 1982, four dedicated cyclists, racing from the Santa Monica Pier in Los Angeles, California, to the Empire State Building in New York City, New York, captured the attention of television audiences across America and established the sport of endurance bicycle racing in the United States.

Now, 31 years later, “Race Across America” is the oldest and longest continuously run ultra-endurance bicycle race in the United States, beginning in Oceanside, California, and finishing in Annapolis, Maryland. In just a week’s time, 340

cyclists from 25 nations will have covered over 3,000 miles racing coast-to-coast non-stop.

Racers compete for a variety of reasons, but many make this annual pilgrimage to promote a wide range of charitable causes, with an average of $2 million being raised for these organizations.

According to computer industry sources on the Internet, Malware attacks are actually on the rise. The growth of attacks on Apple’s operating systems are outpacing those on Microsoft based PCs simply because Macs are an easier target. Apple long relied on the fact that its products represented a tiny segment of the PC market and consequently not a very lucrative target. According to Kaspersky Lab’s president Eugene Kaspersky, Apple is ten years behind Microsoft in Malware defense technology.

Shut Down the Bill Factory and Create Jobs The legislature has become a bill factory, generating unnecessary legislation that detracts from more important goals and responsibilities.

Our goals should be to promote economic growth and increase government efficiency. Instead, hours are spent debating bills that will not do anything to meet our goals.

Recently, a bill to establish requirements for mattress disposal was debated on the Senate floor. The disposal of mattresses is not a priority, but it is a product of the endless bill factory.

As California’s economy struggles, the legislature should focus on job creation not the distraction of mattress issues.

Win XP continues to maintain its predominance in worldwide enterprise PC installations mostly due to the “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it” syndrome.

Windows 7 is an excellent, stable OS but so is Win XP. The dilemma facing large companies is that switching the entire enterprise from 32bit Win XP to 64bit Win 7 requires a significant dollar outlay for new hardware, software upgrades and network expense. Win XP workstations run the enterprise applications as efficiently as newer Win 7 workstations would so there is little incentive to suffer the expense of switching to Win 7. Several of our commercial customers, when adding or replacing new workstations in their business networks, choose to stay with Win XP in the new workstations simply to maintain network compatibility.

Home and small business users have been upgrading to Win 7 at a far greater rate than large businesses with server based networks for several reasons. First, if they buy a retail PC (Dell Gateway, HP etc) they don’t have a choice. Secondly, standalone PC users don’t have expensive networks to worry about. Third, these users don’t have heavy investments in proprietary software that must be upgraded in order to accommodate the Win 7 OS. As with businesses we can accommodate home based users with new PCs using Win XP but here the reasons are usually personal preference rather than economic.

But a full half hour of Contemporary Christian music? And they want you to stand while they sing? For a half hour. Not for me, thanks. I went out in the reception area after the second song, read some of the church brochures and then re-enterred the church after the music had ended and the actual church service began.

It’s a very casual church. Lots of shorts, sandals, tennis shoes . . the pastor was in blue jeans and a v-neck white tee shirt. No matter. He did a fine job of preaching.

The Movement in San Marcos is a pretty large church by now – up over a thousand, but only a couple years old. The pastor, Jeremy McGinty is a good guy. His brother Jobey leads worship.

My sense is that it tends to be aimed at a generally younger demographic, based both on the contemporary christian music and the New Age graphics that appear throughout the church and featured prominently on its web site and in its graphics.

With over 1000 adults attending each week, that means they to be growing at a healthy rate. Good pastor, but the music would likely deter me from returning on a regular basis.

North County Baptist Church . . . I've attended this church at least four times. I absolutely love their musical program! It's more like a toprated country music and gospel jubilee show. That pastor and his family put on a 'show' to start the 11am serv-

ice that rivals anything you've ever seen on tv.

Pastor Clint Miller picks a guitar as well as Willie Nelson, his eldest son, Cheyenne, plays a mean bass and his youngest son, Cody, plays a piano like Floyd Cramer. Clint's wife, Amy, and daughter-in-law, Erin (Cheyenne's wife) harmonize beautifully.

I love Pastor Clint Miller like a brother, and his family are not only talented but very warm and loving people.

Pastor Clint preaches a more traditional sermon but it is notably “folksy.” If he sees a member of the church arrive, he’ll greet the individual he’ll tell the occasional modern day parable to make a point, but, for the most part, his preaching is of the traditional type. It’s very much like a family meeting with Pastor Miller leading the family. A good church with great people.

There is currently a plan to hold a Community Town Hall Meeting . . . largely in response to what its organizaers see as a failure of Mayor Sam to properly respond to members in the audience at the Town Hall he called several weeks ago. They want an open forum where residents can voice their complaints and concerns. Mayor Sam and all councilmembers and staff have been invited.

I read where Mayor Sam has declined the invitation to attend. We think that is both unfortunate and unwise. You are never going to solve a problem by ignoring it.

We urge Mayor Sam and his fellow councilmembers to attend this meeting and hold productive discussions and/or debate.

Related to this Community Town Hall Meeting is the amazing news that they have

applied for, but have been denied the use of Council Chambers for this public meeting. City Hall is “the People’s House,” not the “Politician’s House.”

The group was offered the use of the Lefty Mitchell Room at a cost of $260. This amounts to a slap in the face of honest, concerned citizens who, in our judgment, have every right to hold such a meeting at City Hall.

Council member Olga Diaz sought to reserve the Council Chambers in her name, to benefit this group. Even one of the elected city officials was denied the simiple courtesy of making a city facility available.

What appears to be happening here is, the city has decided it wants to play ‘hard ball’ with a citizens group. The city wants things done its way and that’s the only way.

Not a good way to gain community support or consensus to solve or, at least, mollify a problem.

The sitting city council does not need us to remind them there is an election coming up. If Mayor Sam would like to see his council majority retained, then we believe it is time for him to respond more positively and to persuade his fellow council members to do the same.

Being non-responsive is not the best way in the world to hold on to one’s elective position.

We happen to think we have a pretty good council makeup at present . . . but if a council is non-responsive, then the electorate has the ability, if not the duty, to make changes.

We shall be watching with great interest to see how Mayor Sam and his colleagues respond to this latest issue.

Bottom Line: Recall? No! Change at election time?

Remains to be seen. We want a reasonable and cohesive council . . . not a bull-headed one.

Letters to the Editor About Atheists Editor’s Note: The writer of this Letter to the Editor, Dale Wolf, of Omaha, Nebraska, is a good friend of The Paper. He is also 96 years old and has acquired more than his share of wisdom over the years. Given the subject matter of this week’s cover story, we felt his letter was particularly appropriate.

I have some ideas that may be a little beyond Christian teachings.

This comes from the simple knowledge that whether one is a devout Christian or a strong Atheist, neither one knows for sure of any of it, so that puts the opposites in the same boat.

There is no need to get oneself in a frenzy about not believing in God, which is only a name used.

It would be better if the Atheist would say, “I don’t believe in God, but just in case I am wrong, I had better prepare my life so it will get me in the beyond, if there is one.” If this is practiced, the life of the so-called Atheist would be a credit to the family, friends, and to all society. Isn’t that what it’s all about?

Even if a person denies the existence of a God, it is best that they follow the rules that God has handed down. The prisons are full of people who didn’t do this. The foremost rule to follow is still the Golden Rule, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

The Pentecostal Churches I had not been to a Pentecostal Church since I was a young boy in Omaha, Nebraska.

New Life started in 1977 as a home Bible study in Mira Mesa. Worship services formally began in 1978 in an elementary school in Mira Mesa with eight families. In 1979 the young congregation moved to a facility in Poway.

New Life moved to Escondido, purchased and constructed its current facility, planted two daughter churches, and realigned its denominational affiliation from the Orthodox Presbyterian Church (OPC) to the PCA. In October 2001, Ted Hamilton was called and installed as Senior Pastor of New Life.

I remember, in the summer, there would often be a ‘Tent Revival’ meeting just a few blocks from where I lived. I and a pal, George Hofmann, would attend a couple of these. We were never able to stay for the full service however, as they were evening meetings and did not end until after our bedtime.

We had heard these folks were “holy rollers.” That, toward the end of the service, they would fall down on the carpeted floors of the tent and roll up and down the aisles. I was never able to confirm this because we had gone home to get to bed before the end of the service. (These services were often held on school nights).

Sunday School 11:00 am Worship Service On the day we attended there was sparse attendance because most of the women had gone to attend a Woman’s Retreat at Big Bear Mountain.

The service tends to be traditional in nature.

The church service is only a part of the Salvation Army mission. The Salvation Army in Escondido serves North County with youth programs, a teen community service project, Home League for women, homework help, Supper Club, scouting programs, home Bible study, a craft league (Crazy Crafters) as well as Sunday School, Bible study and Sunday morning worship.

The Salvation Army also offers a Family Service Center for those needing emergency food boxes or other kinds of assistance.

Of all the charities available to support, my number one favorite is the Salvation Army. They do more with the money than most all other charities; very little of

While there, however, we saw quite a show. Invariably, the preacher was a singer, dancer, instrumentalist (often with nothing more than a tambourine) and, above all else, a master storyteller and showman.

I suspect these types of Pentecostal/Tent Revival Services are mostly found down South these days - perhaps they are still held in the midwest . . . though I have not followed their progress.

Pentecostal Churches follow different form of services, but all basically believe in the infusion of the Holy Spirit entering the preacher and his congregants and causing them to sing, dance, worship (in this case, worship is often described as clapping, holding up of hands, standing up, standing with both hands, palms up, in front of you, or dancing.) They also believe in the Holy Spirit bestowing upon the believers the ability to ‘speak in tongues.’ I attended four Pentecostal Church services but saw no evidence of ‘speaking in tongues,’ but plenty of singing, dancing, clapping. They also believe in the power of prayer being able to cure a number of afflictions.

Some of your more extreme Pentecostal Churches also believe in, and practice, snake handling. This is mostly practiced down south but the practice is diminishing. Most recently, a pastor in West Virginia died as a result of a timber rattlesnake bite he suffered. He, as most snake handler Pentecostals do, refused medical attention, believing his faith would save and cure him.

It didn’t.

Most Pentecostal Churches distance themselves from this practice.

The North Point Worship Center church is part of the United Pentecostal Church International denomination of churches.

Different churches have different customs.

Some churches expect you to stand for 15 minutes to 30 minutes during singing. On my first visit to North Point Worship Center, I had the distinct impression they expect you to stand for the whole service.

Not for me.

I had stood for the lengthy songs of praise - then the lead Pastor asked us to be seated and gave a brief message. He then introduced a guest pastor from Mississippi who looked and sounded interesting . . . but as soon as he took the pulpit, he asked us to stand. I stood and listened to about 10 minutes of his message and then I left. I was not going to stand for his entire service. I have a bad back and am not going to suffer injury because of some church protocol. I regretted having to leave as the preacher seemed interesting, but it was simply more than I was able to tolerate. I vowed to return another time and learn a bit more.

On my second return to ‘The North Point,’ it was toward the middle of the service. I had attended another church service earlier and decided to catch the finale of Sunday’s service at this church.

Pastor Darin Sargent was in his prime.

If you like Pentecostal, you’ll love Pastor Sargent. He’s a fascinating bear of a man; born with his left arm extending only to his elbow, he became a master storyteller, a master showman, and he tends to shout his sermon rather than talk it through.

This is good for those of us with hearing aids.

He reminded me a lot of the preacher(s) I would see and hear at the old tent revivals back in Omaha.

He would dance on the stage, dance in the aisles, he’d leave the stage and come into the aisle and look at individual congregants, he’d jump on a chair in the front row and continue his ‘hell, fire and brimstone’ type of preaching.

It was quite entertaining as he told a very realistic biblical story which was at the core of his extremely dramatic presentation.

Often, his congregants would clap, stand and acknowledge his message, amid frequent shouts of “Yes!” and “Hallelujah!.” It was religious theatre at its best.

I spoke with one of the head ushers in the foyer and asked him about the continual standing. Was this a matter of protocol? I told him why I had left the earlier Sunday.

He assured me that if I wanted to be seated, I was perfectly welcome to take a seat. That was of some comfort to me. I may well return, out of curiosity if nothing more.

Church is a place to go to strengthen your mind and to remind you to practice what is preached, not just to please God.

This was a totally different, but still similar, presentation.

It was an attractive, fairly large church. Very good musicians, but way too long with the music. Christian Contemporary, it featured good singers, good instrumentalists, but was just too long.

For me, at least. The members didn’t seem to mind.

Again, frequent hand clapping, raising of hands, and shouts of praise.

His sermons tend toward the traditional type sermon, not a lot of humor, mostly scriptural.

What this all boils down to is that no matter the belief, it is the performance that counts.

Pastor Myatt was a good speaker, not much humor in his message - but he was able to present the message, and not with the histrionics of Pastor Sargent, as described above.

The pastor delivers a traditional type sermon. The service features opening music from an excellent choir, the congregation joins the choir, filling the church with song, which was impressive.

One of the elders told me at this church it was also permissible to be seated during the songs of praise as well as during the message . . . though many did remain standing for the approximate 30 minute singing service.

Most all churches, even the smaller ones, use the video screens with lyrics to the songs . . . and, during the service, showing the biblical selections to which the pastor refers.

More and more churches are using modern day technology as well as marketing and management technology and skills to expand their memberships.
