Some day, way in the future, some archeologist is going to be stymied on the origin of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in the Sahara desert so I claim here and now that I introduced them via the Algerian army escort that we had (it was a bit of a war zone at the time . . . ). Brian introduced them to Wagon Wheels, a British chocolate and marshmallow concoction. They made us honorary Captains of the Algerian Army - that’s just how popular my p&b’s and Brian’s Wagon Wheels were . . . .)

Most of us don’t get a chance to hobnob with royalty . . . or with world famous movie stars and other bright lights in the entertainment world.

The BBC presented a documentary on the Rainbow Rovers in addition to a daily news update on 'Pebble Mill' - early days of satellite transmissions.

It all started in Jollie Olde England. Brian and Janene were just two of the people that made Olde England so Jollie.

Brian was in the music and entertainment business so it was natural that he’d meet the biggest names in that stellar world. Janene was an actress, as well as part of the music world, so she, too, got to meet a lot of the other stars.

Because of the circles they traveled in, and because of the reputation they both had earned as caring people who always accomplished their mission(s) it wasn’t long before the rich and powerful called upon them to lend a hand to the less fortunate.

“One of the biggest projects we were involved in was the Rainbow Rovers humanitarian convoys to the Saharawi refugee camps in the Sahara Desert, southwestern Algeria.

In 1988 Brian was asked by Lord Winchilsea to accompany him to the refugee camps because of Brian's involvement with Band Aid and Live Aid. President Abdelaziz of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic in his Rainbow Rovers sweatshirt and hat hosted a dinner for the team, a great honor.

He was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize two years later and is one of the longest serving African Presidents.

A photo from the second convoy - they visited a school during their first convoy and noticed that children who had either had polio or suffered a mine explosion only had sticks to walk with so in the second convoy they brought a truck of secondhand childrens' sized crutches and were guests of honor the next day at a soccer match.

Some used their crutches to run with, others hit the ball with theirs, it didn't matter as long as they could run and play the game. Very cool.

A group of children from the camps came and stayed with the Shepherds in their village. The Bibury Village school got involved and created personal boxes for each child to welcome them. Actually the whole village got involved, it was awesome. The children that came to stay in the UK for about a month were chosen by their teachers based on how hard they worked in school.

Europe's attention to the plight of the Saharawi people who were often referred to as 'the forgotten'.

Their country has been invaded in 1975. They left in the night to escape relentless bombing and fled into the desert where they had been and still are trying to survive and use international courts now to regain their country of Western Sahara.

In a part of the world where women are often valued less than camels, Saharawi women had full equality.

The Saharawi's started a democracy in their camps, one person - one vote and even taught their illiterate seniors how to read and write so they could fully participate.

They established schools in the camps as education was important to their future but classrooms often had one or two pencils between 20 children. Hence the convoys of aid.

3. The Litter Box is not a cookie jar.

4. The sofa is not a 'face towel'.

5. The garbage collector is not stealing our stuff.

6. I will not play tug-of-war with Dad's underwear when he's on the toilet.

7. Sticking my nose into someone's crotch is an unacceptable way of saying 'hello'.

Rovers Ltd. made a commitment early on that all funds raised were to go for actual aid and be fully documented to the people who donated to the convoy. We got sponsorship for all hotels, hovercraft and ferry crossings, petrol, office space, staff, xerox machines, everything so that every Pound Sterling or US Dollar bought appropriate aid for the refugee camps. The only item we could never get sponsored for some reason was postage stamps, had to pay for those. We worked with the doctors, nurses, teachers, farmers in the camps and got actual lists of what they needed vs what sometimes gets sent out to the camps in the Sahara Desert, often over 110 degrees in the summer.

We participated in four convoys over a period of ten years and have a wealth of funny and heartwarming stories about the basic good in most people. But that's a book . . .

Who are these people who helped accomplish so much in the world and to help those less fortunate than most?

Well, they’re your neighbors.

You learned a bit about them in last week’s edition of The Paper.

That’s the issue where I took Evelyn Madison up for a biplane ride as part of the Valentine’s Day celebration.

I found this timely, because today I was in a store that sells sunglasses, and only sunglasses. A young lady walks over to me and asks, "what brings you in today?".

I looked at her, and said, “I'm interested in buying a refrigerator.”

She didn't quite know how to respond. Am I getting to be that age?

I can't afford one. So I'm wearing my garage door opener.

••••• I also made a cover for my hearing aid and now I have what they call "blue teeth," I think.

Capitol then sent him to Holland to set up an International Office there, later moved back to the UK where he was promoted to the head of A&R for EMI Records UK. In the early 80’s he moved to Phonogram Records UK as Managing Director. He must have been doing something right as he was named Man of the Year in 1982

by Record Business Magazine.

A&M Records came courting and hired him away, also as Managing Director.

He was a very successful man in the music business . . . and then. . . . and then Janene gave him a flying lesson for a Christmas present.

He fell in love with flying and decided it was time for a change.

He and Janene ultimately started up an Air Charter company in the UK . . . and would later move back to the US to start life, again, in North County.

Today, Brian is the Director of Training at ProFlight in Carlsbad during the week and barnstormer pilot for Fun Flights Biplane Rides on weekends. It was Fun Flights you read about in last week’s edition of The Paper.

So what does that really mean to us? It tells us that the disc itself does have a God-given ability to heal and repair if provided the proper mechanisms for self-healing. There is a specific mechanism inherent in each of the spinal discs called the “pump mechanism of disc nutri-tion” (see Fig 1). When this mechanism is not working properly, the spinal discs will begin to die causing bulges, herniations, and eventually spinal stenosis.

The Sheriff's Department and Escondido Police Department have announced the arrest of a man on charges of breaking into children's bedrooms in the North County and sexually assaulting them.

Gilbert Andrew Chavarria was taken into custody on February 16th after DNA and other evidence linked him to four cases.

Chavarria's crime spree started in June 2013 around Escondido and San Marcos.

Chavarria broke into homes by removing or cutting the screen from open windows in the early morning hours. He cut pieces of the victims' pajamas during

Congratulations on your comprehensive, timely and accurate article regarding puppy mills and pet stores (Feb. 12).

The San Diego Animal Defense Team (ADT) started in February, 2009. Our family had just adopted a rescued female Saint Bernard. She had been a puppy mill breeder and although she survived with her life, we often wondered if she was just too big for them to easily kill. She was found fleeing in terror on the mean streets in downtown Los Angeles. It was obvious that she was mentally as well as physically broken. All of her teeth were gone -- broken off

••••• I love a good story teller and one of our newest clients, attorney Tony Abbott, is amongst the best.

Tony’s heritage is Italian. He tells of how his family emigrated to America because at that time in Italy there were no opportunities to make anything of your life. Once his family emigrated they found that opportunity awaited, however, you had to work mightyhard to achieve . . . and it sometimes took time.

Turns out Tony was the first in his family line to become a professional man. He studied law, passed the bar, and began to build a successful law practice, including serving as Judge Pro-Tem in a number of wide ranging cases. Along the way

We brought her home and began her rehabilitation. She was terrified of men, including my husband and son. She tried to hide from us all day and all night, either wedged in a narrow area between the wall and my side of the bed, or under our deck, behind bushes. She dug a hole there and did her best to disappear.

Bella didn't respond to us in any way. Evening walks with her were miserable. She tried to bolt and anyone on the other end of the leash needed to be strong and prepared for battle

Within a month, we were taking to the streets, protesting pet stores selling puppy mill pups. Protesting for their mothers, for Bella. This issue was now personal.

American Legion Post 149 Auxiliary Visited Veterans in Hospital

Escondido’s American Legion Post 149 Auxiliary Members recently visited the Veterans Hospital in La Jolla for an afternoon of fun events with the veterans. The Auxiliary prepared and served seventy five meals to hungry veterans, challenging games of bingo were played, and veterans were treated to handmade wheelchair bags filled with toiletries and daily hygiene items, made by Auxiliary members.

Organizing with seasoned activists Zola M. and Arnie S., we became the San Diego Animal Defense Team. We planned our campaigns carefully and took on every pet store in San Diego County, from Pups and Pets in Santee to California Pets in Escondido. Some of our photos from those actions accompany your article. Hundreds of activists joined us over the years and we averaged about 40 people at most protests.

This is not easy work. It will make you cry. It will give you nightmares. But in the end, you can save so many mother dogs living a tortured life in puppy mills. Over the next six years, we were able to shut down store after store (San Diego Puppy, Puppy Stars, Naedeen's Puppies, Pet Place, My Puppy, Pet Works, Puparazzi).

Eventually, in a partnership with the San Diego Humane Society, APRL and CAPS also came on board and we passed a City Council ordinance banning the sale of puppies, cats or rabbits in any pet store within the San Diego city limits.

Our family lost our Bella just two days after Christmas. By then, she gave kisses and loved to be hugged and petted. Our little granddaughter had broken the ice. Saint Bernards just can't resist children.

Bella had no idea of what she did -- she started a movement.

Encryption Can Help Prevent Identity Theft

As we all know, modern computer technology has created vast new opportunities for tech-savvy criminals. By illegally accessing computer databases and gaining access to private data, identity thieves can cast a pall upon every online transaction we make. Sometimes, the resulting financial nightmares can never be unraveled, with victimized businesses and their customers losing billions in the process.

One fairly simple way to help prevent identity theft involves the encryption of customer data. Encryption scrambles data through the use of mathematical formulas, converting consumer information such as social security numbers to unreadable gibberish for persons who are not authorized to access the information.

Even the IRS reported that it lost over $5 billion to identity thieves filing false returns. Consumers not only stand to lose thousands of dollars, but businesses are victims as well.

Damage claims filed by defrauded customers can result in settlements that cost companies millions.

To help alleviate this problem, I have introduced Assembly Bill 322 (AB 322).

The bill will require the encryption of consumers’ social security numbers by any public or private entity that stores this information online or within a company database. By taking this simple, cost-effective step, consumers and businesses will be protected from the major objective of all online thieves – access to social security numbers and an open door to identity theft.

CA Pets closed the Escondido Westfield location about a month ago …The animals were moved to the Westfield Carlsbad CA Pets location.

That location is scheduled to be closed for remodeling and they do not plan on renewing the lease to CA Pets location in Carlsbad. Leslie Davies is working with Keith Blackburn and the city council to get an ordinance passed in Carlsbad.

They are also suing me for the same thing as Furever Puppies.

Leslie Davies, Rebekah Snyder (Seery), and I founded SCCAD So Cal Companion Animal Defenders last March. We began protesting Oceanside Puppy in August of 2013 right after it opened. The Germans observed strict radio silence. Due to a low supply of fuel, one of the key element of the attack was to capture Allied gasoline depots. Allied bombardment of the Rumanian oil fields left the Germans desperately low; without the fuel depots, their tanks had little chance in reaching Antwerp.

The Battle of the Bulge

For the armchair history buff, in a nutshell, here’s the last epic European battle during World War II, which has become known as “The Battle of the Bulge.”

German Dictator Adolf Hitler ordered an attack across the Western Front of Belgium. His goal was to compel the United States and Britain to sue for peace, freeing Germany forces to fight against the Soviets on the Eastern Front.

Hitler wanted to capture the port of Antwerp, depriving the Allies of supplies.

Hitler’s generals cautioned his plan was too ambitious.

Nonetheless, the dictator ordered

A special German unit was formed to infiltrate Allied lines dressed as American soldiers and spread confusion. Road signs were switched, and Germans posing as G.I. Military Police confused traffic flow. Allied Supreme Commander Gen. Dwight D. “Ike” Eisenhower was completely unaware.

At 5:30 a.m. on Dec. 16, 1944, the German offensive began on the 6th Panzer Army's front. Meeting heavy resistance from the Americans, the Germans wereforced to commit tanks to the battle. In the center, German troops opened a gap through the U.S.28th and 106th Infantry Divisions, capturing two U.S. regiments in the process, creating a huge bulge in the front line.

Finally called my Art Director, Troy Larson, told him of the problem and told him to put his detective hat on. He did and figured out what happened.

Around 3pm Tuesday I made a file for this week’s edition and copied over the 2/19/15 edition to use as a template. I then deleted all of the data in the new 2/26/15 file so I'd have a new file to work with. A clean slate, so to speak.

Unfortunately, I apparently had not saved the final corrected copy of the 2/19/15 issue and sent the raw copy to the printer, the copy with the uncorrected typos. Troy went back into my computer and found a backup copy where I HAD MADE ALL THE CORRECTIONS! Called the printer; they had already printed the hard copy. Too late and too costly to reprint . . . however, they agreed to make up a new digitized copy so I could resend to all my email clients and FACEBOOK users and

wouldn’t look like a total doofus. I sent the printer the CORRECTED EDITION and it was then re-sent. If you are on our email list, or follow our Facebook page, you saw the corrected copy of last week’s edition. If you only saw the hard copy, well . . . now you know what happened.

This is all perhaps way too technical for you . . .and maybe too much information . . . but I wanted to get off my chest how and why we messed up.

Irresponsible and insensitive is the editor of your publication for printing the racially offensive faux joke “Post Riot News,” about Ferguson, Missouri in volume 45, no. 05 of your paper. The joke itself spews racist propaganda, by negatively steriotyping all people of Ferguson as lazy, irresponsible and undeducated. That it was printed in a periodical originating in Escondido demonstrates the ignorance and discriminatory attitudes that reside in the institutions of North County San Diego.

North County is less than three percent black. The editor would be well served to reserve comment to the predominance of slackers, panhandlers and derelicts in this region, whose forefathers were not subject to

I just finished reading Mayor Abed’s “My Final Letter from the Mayor” in your February 19th edition of The Paper.

My first thought was, “If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.”

Why doesn’t our Mayor clean up the political mess in City Hall (which he vowed to do a while back) before focusing on certain articles and humorous presentations in The Paper?

I view some of the happenings in City Hall, especially where the forced resignation of Police Chief Maher is concerned, as being illegal. So far, I haven’t noticed any illegal activity associated with The Paper.

I believe Mayor Abed’s criticism of your publication is ‘way out of bounds. He really needs to focus on what is happening in his “house” before trying to appear as a primadonna. I read in your last edition that Escondido mayor Sam Abed will not be writing a weekly article anymore because of a joke in the January 29th edition. I looked through all the weekly papers that I have saved and found that edition. I read that joke and had a good laugh at it again and then thought rather solemnly, that yes it was funny, but unfortunately it was most likely right on.

Then I thought some more about the mayors decision and remembered October 30th edition in which you endorsed Olga Diaz for mayor over Mr. Abed and thought that is most likely the real reason for Mr. Abed deciding to not write an article each week for The Paper anymore.

I really believe it is sour grapes on Mr. Abed’s part.

I also believe that if that joke offends you, it may be telling you who you are. If you just get a good laugh from it and see the humor in it that also tells you who you are.

The 5th Panzer Army's advance was slowed allowing the U.S. 101st Airborne to reach the vital crossroads at Bastogne. With snowstorms in one of the bitterly coldest winters on record, it prevented Allied air power from support. In the south, the German infantry was essentially stopped by the U.S. VIII Corps.

Later that first day, members of a SS Waffen Panzer battalion captured and executed some 150 Americans in a field near Malmedy. This action became infamously known as “The Malmedy Massacre.”

Encountering heavy resistance at Stoumont, Belgium, the Germans ran out of fuel and were forced to abandon their vehicles.

American troops fought a critical action at St. Vith, but they were soon driven back by the Germans.

This collapse caused the U.S. 101st Airborne and the U.S. 10th Armored Division's Combat Command B at Bastogne to be surrounded.

At Bastogne, the Americans repelled numerous German assaults while fighting in bitter cold weather. Short on supplies and ammunition, the U.S. 101st's commander, Brig. Gen. Anthony McAuliffe rebuffed a German demand for surrender by replying, "Nuts!"

Ike asked how long it would take for Lt. Gen. George Patton’s Third Army to advance north. Patton replied: “48 hours.” No one believed him, but he did it and rescued the encircled American troops.

On Dec. 24, with clear weather, Allied fighter-bombers entered the battle. That same day, more German forces ran out of fuel and stopped 10 miles short of the Meuse River.

German commanders urged Hitler to halt the attack, but he angrily refused. Soon after, the German forces ground to a halt – literally out of gas. The Western Front returned to the Dec. 16 positions.

During the Battle of the Bulge, 20,876 Allied soldiers were killed, with 42,893 wounded and 23,554 captured or missing. German losses: 15,652 killed, 41,600 wounded, and 27,582 captured or missing.

Defeated in the campaign, German offensive capability in the West was destroyed. The Battle of the Bulge has gone down as one of the largest and deadliest and futile encounters in modern warfare.

"Hips for Sarge"

Sarge is a 5-6 year old male German Shepherd who was rescued from the Baldwin Animal Shelter in January.

Upon an exam including x-rays by our vet, we learned of a horrible dysplasia condition for both hips. After a week in foster care, being able to note how he gets around and particularly how he does going up and down steps, even small ones, it became clear he needs surgery.

Taking medicine is not going to address the pain he has and the worsening conditions.

He is a sweet, appreciative dog and we don't want to put him down. He can have an excellent quality of life with this surgery which costs $2000 and essentially removes the femur heads on both hips. Its not the best, most complete surgery but it is surgery which substantially deals with the pain and flexibility issues. Would you consider brightening his future? Like our esteemed editor/publisher, lyle e davis, my wife and I were in the audience to hear Garrison Keillor at the Center for the Arts, Escondido. I am a long time fan of “Prairie Home Companion,” Lake Wobegone, and anything he writes.

His portrayals of the Lutheran Church in Lake Wobegon (Is there a town in Minnesota without a Lutheran Church?) and the local Catholic Church, Our Lady of Perpetual Responsibility (A name that could apply to any church anywhere), are spot on to me, a retired pastor.

He does this carefully, never edging into anything blasphemous or even heretical. It is just funny and so very true.

As he told us at CCAE, Mr. Keillor was raised in a very strict, legalistic religious group.

While he learned scripture, the social rules

As I pondered his faith journey, two scriptures came to mind.

Proverbs 22:6 (NKJV): “Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.” His parents, perhaps, envisioned a different outcome, but this scripture came true for them.

The other is Ecclesiastes 11:1 (NKJV): “Cast your bread upon the waters, For you will find it after many days.” This verse is really about faith and releasing and depending on God to provide the best result. Though he went off into the world, drifting as it were, he found his way back to faith and prospered.

Some of you are parents who have children that are drifting. God’s promise is that they will find their way back to their training, even if in a different expression of that faith.

Some of you are drifters, you find yourself a long ways from a faith you once knew. These same scriptures say that you can find your way back, to a place that helps you express the belief that is embedded in your heart. There are lots of churches in North County that will help you do that.

And that’s the Good News from Lake Wobegone.

What Kind of Computer Works for Me?

When we opened our doors in 1995, the personal computer world was a simple place. If you needed a “portable” PC you ponied up around $2500 for a ten-pound “luggable.” If you needed a “non-portable” PC for your business or home you spent around $1000 for a desktop that sat flat on your desk with your monitor on top or a “tower” that sat on the floor.

You could choose from a dozen foreign and domestic brands with different case styles but on the inside and functionally, they were all the same. In 1995 only 55% of Americans used a PC and only 7% had access to the Internet that, at the time, was little more than a collec-

Are they right for your family?

Today nearly 90% of Americans use some sort of computing device. (Smart phone, tablet, notebook or desktop) and nearly all of those devices are capable of accessing the Internet. Indeed, by far and away the number one application for PCs (notebooks and desktops) is Internet access. We pay bills, do banking, shop and communicate with our friends and relatives via the Internet. While business PC users typically have stand-alone LAN based applications in addition to Internet access, most home users would have difficulty naming applications on their PCs that don’t involve the Internet.

PC users with “high task” applications like video and audio editing, animation, graphics rendering, solids modeling, scientific applications and high-end computer gaming do benefit from the ongoing advances in the speed and performance of CPUs, video, memory and data storage. The rest of us who don’t have those “high task” applications would get little or no benefit from the “latest and greatest” in PC performance technologies. All the speed and

funds from a reverse mortgage.

First, the client can elect to receive a “lump sum” payment. This means that they get a check from the bank sent to them for the entire amount of the proceeds. If the client has an existing mortgage, the reverse mortgage pays off the old loan first and then the client has access to the equity funds that are left over. In many cases this is a large amount of money.

Sometimes it is more money than the client needs at the time. Let’s say a client has $200,000 of available equity…They may not want all that money at once. In this case, the client can elect to take a smaller lump sum payment (say $50,000) and then have the remaining equity distributed in either one of two other ways.

The remaining equity can be stored in a “Line of Credit” to be used whenever the client wants access to those funds. This is a great way to have cash at hand when needed, but not have to pay interest on the funds until they are actually used. And the client never makes a payment on the reverse line.

The credit line is also guaranteed never to shrink (as regular lines of credit can). The reverse mortgage line of credit option is good for someone who may not need access to all their available funds now, but might have plans in the future for those funds such as a vacation or travel. It is also a great source of emergency cash when life’s little (expensive) surprises pop up.

In our last column, we discussed the basics of a reverse mortgage and how it works. This week’s column will focus on how funds can be accessed on a reverse mortgage. We already know that a reverse mortgage allows seniors over 62 to access their equity in the form of cash…but how this is done is often a mystery to people. The last option to access funds is There are three main ways to access called a monthly tenure payment.

To check your Internet speed limit in Mbps (Megabits per second) type “speakeasy speed test” into your search engine and follow the instructions. Your cable or DSL Internet speed should fall between 5.0Mbps and 100Mbps and no matter how slow or fast, nearly any PC built within the past ten years should be capable of handling it. For example, if you and your neighbor each have a sixty mile commute on a freeway where the speed limit is rigorously enforced at 70MPH, it won’t matter that he drives a 1.3 million dollar Bugatti Veyron and you drive a 14 thousand dollar Toyota Yaris.

This is a monthly payment that the lender makes to the client every month for as long as they live in their home. Once the size of the monthly payment has been determined, the client can be assured that it will never go down…regardless of what happens to property values. So in the example earlier, the client could take an initial lump sum payment and then have the remaining equity to be paid to them every month in equal installments for life. This is a great option for someone who may want to enhance their monthly cash-flow or income.

Library Hosts 11th Annual Scrabble-Thon – The Escondido Public Library and Friends of Literacy Services will host the 11th Annual Scrabble-Thon Tournament & Fundraiser on Saturday, March 14, from 8am to 2pm. Veterans Honor Garden Swings in Full Action – The Veterans’ Association of North County (VANC) is inviting the public to kick up their heels for an evening of boogie, blues and swing on Thursday, March 5th from 7-9pm, to support the VANC Veterans Honor Garden. Unlike tobacco/alcohol which occur mostly in the bottom back of the mouth and the side edges of the tongue, HPV lesions are buried deep within the tissues, possibly below the membrane at the base of the tongue.

Oral Cancer - No Longer "an old-person's disease"

Today’s dentists must adapt to what is known as two distinct, separate causes of oral cancer.

Tobacco/alcohol use which is traditionally identified as a leading risk factor for the development of oral cancer and the infection of HPV-16 which is rising rapidly especially in the younger ages that are non-smokers between the ages of 25-50.

Oral cancer is on the rise in all age groups regardless of tobacco and alcohol decline due to the spread of a particular strain of human papilloma virus, HPV16. In fact, "HPV may contribute to the development of approximately 20% to 30% of all oral cancer cases" worldwide and 40 to 80% of all oral cancer cases in the US. Recent data tells us the HPV related oral cancer is more elusive than the tobacco/alcohol

HPV can cause oral cancer with no signs until the disease is very advanced.

Most Americans will have some version of HPV in their lifetimes.

The HPV virus infects at least 50% of all people who have had sex at some time in their lives. It is "likely that changes in sexual behaviors of young adults over the last few decades and which are continuing to spread HPV and the cancer-potential versions of it." Of the 130 strains of HPV viruses, only a handful are potential cancer versions. HPV-16 is the one that causes cervical cancer in women and oral cancer as well.

Of this HPV-16 most of us (99%) possess an immune system.

Because HPV related oral cancer develop via transmission of HPV16 over moist epithelial cells, sexual contact, including but not limited to open mouth kissing and genital-oral contact, is a risk factor for HPV-related oral cancer.
