It is the most widely-read book on Earth, yet no individual person or religious group completely fathoms all its mysteries. For anyone or any religious faith to claim total and perfect knowledge of this ancient and holy book, would – most assuredly – be quickly criticized by the world’s foremost Bible scholars, theologians, and leading experts, everywhere.
MYSTERIOUS POWER. This one, single embodiment of ancient prophecy and historicity was once banned in China, allowing Chairman Mao Tse-Tung’s “Little Red Book” (aka “Quotations from Chairman Mao”) to be the most widely-read book in all of China – but only by default. Mao Tse-Tung’s “Little Red Book” vs. the Christian Bible was hardly a legitimate horse race in terms of popularity, especially when the opponent’s best steed was left locked in the barn, as Chairman Mao had arranged when he locked down the so-called Good Book by declaring it illegal. Additionally, Mao’s Little Red Book was not an option – it was a requirement for every Chinese citizen to own, to read, and to carry at all times. That was the law. China’s widespread ban on the Bible was lifted decades ago, and then sporadically popped up again, confusing even Chinese residents, themselves, if ownership of a Christian Bible was legal or not.
In 2008, China officially banned the Bible (again), this time it was prohibited at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, which stirred worldwide controversy and disappointment, especially from Christians. Adding insult to injury to the world of Christianity, the Islamic religion’s Qur’an was not banned – only the Christian book, encompassing both the Old and New Testaments.
Despite these sporadic set-backs and disadvantages in the world’s most populated country of China, the shocking emergence of Bible sales continued to skyrocket (even in Mainland China), making it officially the world’s best-selling and most widely distributed book in world history, with printed estimates of well over 5-billion copies, according to the most reliable of sources.

New Testament, the world’s most heavily-populated nation (numbering over 1.4 billion Chinese) still wished to own one! Why?
This is an intoxicating testimonial to the Bible’s popularity, considering the historical disadvantages in a Communist nation, cultural suppressions, illegality, non-awareness of its very existence, various bans, and vehement competition from far older, more established religious faiths within Mainland China. Considering all of the setbacks and negatives above, the emergence of the Bible’s popularity in China is, well, nothing short of miraculous!

Associated Press wire services picked up on a story from the largest circulated Chinese newspaper, China Daily, which is published in the People’s Republic of China in three languages: Chinese, English, and French. This most widely-read Chinese newspaper -- which is run by the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China -- made a most unexpected worldwide splash with a long-held admission, now made public. The officially atheistic Communist-run China Daily could suppress the truth no longer: the world’s largest printer of Bibles is now based in East China and, according to the Communist newspaper’s own report, “Although it faces challenges, the company aims to maintain production by embracing the modern world.”
The initial Communist Party idea of keeping the Christian Bible out of the hands of its citizenry proved to have a shelf-life. It was only a matter of time when the lid suppressing Biblical Scripture -- finally blew off in China!
As sensational as these events were to outsiders, the struggle within was far more remarkable. “In the 1980s, many believers in China could not afford a Bible, or they had nowhere to purchase one,” reports Chang Wei, of China Daily newspaper. “Later, some people even had to copy the book word by word from their smartphones. The content of the Bible was far more important than the slow, tortuous method of retrieving it.” Apparently, that’s how much the Chinese people were curious about it. They wanted to read it. Qiu Zhonghui, president of Amity Printing Company is now, officially, the world’s largest printer of the Christian Bible, having already printed 13.22-million copies in more than 100 languages in 2014. The books, today, canvas China in 10 languages for members of China’s various ethnic groups, even embracing the blind with 83,000 copies in Braille. The unfolding of this enormous real-life human drama within China is, objectively, intriguing on any level of study, even without religious prejudice.
The Communist-run newspaper boldly went where no Communist words had ever gone before -- by quoting Qiu Zhonghui, head of Amity Printing: “It took 20 years to print the first 50 million copies, but the second 50 million took just five years. It does not matter if the Bible is a hard copy or software, as long as the reader can find inner peace.” So, what is it about this so-called Holy Book which seems to wield an unseen power and enduring fascination, even on forbidden soil? over the span of thousands of years? A book which staunch Christians call the divine word of God, and which atheists and opposing faiths perceive as only a collection of faerie tales, childish notions, and wild-eyed imaginings.
Whether one is Christian, atheist, agnostic, makes no difference. By all objective accounts, this mysterious book warrants attention. Its impact has changed the landscape of human thinking on this third planet from the sun as no other, before or since. As of April of 2015, Christians comprise the largest religious group, by far, with an estimated 2.2-billion followers, nearly one-third (31%) of all 6.9-billion inhabitants on planet Earth. The Islamic faith is a distant second, with 1.6-billion adherents. Once more, whether one is believer or doubter, is irrelevant here. The Christian Bible remains a fascinating study and to completely ignore the global impact of this so-called divine book would be the height of human ignorance, not to mention human arrogance.
SHROUD OF TURIN. The “Shroud of Turin” (aka “Man of the Turin Shroud”) has captured world attention from both the religious and secular worlds. At the center of the shroud’s existence is an ongoing debate whether the shroud is, indeed, the burial linen of the historical Jesus (real Hebrew name, Yeshua). The diversion of opinion regarding

the shroud being, or not being, the burial cloth of Jesus, does not rest, solely, between opposing Christian and secular camps. There is a broad band of dissension and off-setting opinions within both Christian and secular communities, themselves, without the necessity of infusing Christian vs. non-Christian dynamics. However, since that scientific finding was announced, there have been vehement attacks on the accuracy of radiocarbon dating; attacks mostly from religious sectors who hold to the belief that the shroud is the burial cloth of their savior, Jesus. Religious beliefs and practices associated with the Shroud of Turin have already impacted the lives of many of the faithful. For example, many Christians now are wearing what they call “The Holy Face Medal,” a medallion worn around the neck and which bears the image from the Shroud of Turin.
Established religions have been cautious in their leanings, one way or the other. For example, the Catholic Church has neither (formally) endorsed nor rejected the shroud as the burial cloth of Jesus, known as the Christ. However, unofficially, they have.

For instance, in 1958, Pope Pius XII approved of the shroud’s image, in association with “the devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus.” And then, Pope John Paul II called the shroud, “A mirror of the Gospel.” However, officially, in 1998, this same Pope John Paul II cautiously stated, “Since it is not a matter of faith, the Church has no specific competence to pronounce on these questions. She (the Church) entrusts to scientists the task of continuing to investigate, so that satisfactory answers may be found to the questions connected with this Sheet.”
Nevertheless, privately, Pope John Paul II had his own inner feelings and was deeply moved by the shroud’s image. He stated, “The Shroud is an image of God’s love as well as of human sin. The imprint left by the tortured body of the Crucified One, which attests to the tremendous human capacity for causing pain and death to one’s fellow man, stands as an icon of the suffering of the innocent in every age.” As early as Pope Julius II onward, subsequent popes took its authenticity for granted, but stopped short of (offically) declaring or confirming its authenticity as the linen of their Savior.

hidden by the folding of the hands). (2) Upward gouge in the side, penetrating into the thoracic cavity (rib cage area). (3) Small punctures around the forehead and scalp. (4) Scores of linear wounds on the torso and legs. (5) Swelling of the face. (6) Streams of blood down both arms. To religious believers, the wounds appear to match those of their Messiah, condemned by Roman law and crucified at Golgotha (Hebrew, Gulgoleth). It was there, at “The Place of the Skull,” where his side was later pierced by a Roman lance to make certain that he was dead while he still hung on a wooden cross. Prior to his death by crucifixion, the so-called Christian Redeemer suffered forehead wounds when Roman centurions mocked his claim as “King of the Jews” by brutally placing a crown of thrones pressed upon his head, hard enough to draw blood.
This parallel is drawn to the small punctures around the forehead and scalp on the man’s image on the shroud which approximates those wounds sustained by a suffering Jesus.
The Christian faithful also draws further parallels to the shroud’s image of a swollen face. Their claim being that, according to Scripture, Jesus of Nazareth was brutally mistreated, including hard punches to the face. Accounts also say his beard was pulled so violently as to draw facial blood. All of which resulted in a badly swollen face. Like that which is shown on the Shroud of Turin. However, in all these findings, evaluations, and areas of scrutiny and debate – there remains an extremely crucial, indispensable clue that, to this very day, has not been adequately addressed in either scientific journals or given consideration on the global internet.

The intent of this article is to examine aspects long ignored, or areas of Biblical mysteries, which have not been given adequate attention or explanation. As such, there appears one viable clue which unravels all the mystery of the Shroud of Turin. Not carbon dating. Not forensic science and medicine but, an indispensable clue nonetheless. A two-thousand-yearold secret, neatly tucked away and which still lies hidden – grossly overlooked -- within the pages of Biblical Scripture itself. Whether the Bible is genuinely the word of a supreme being is not addressed here. The intent is to use the Bible’s own reference points as a parameter of study. Whether the historical Jesus was divine or mortal is better left for others to debate over.
However, in regards to the Shroud of Turin, the key in answering if it is the burial cloth of the Risen Jesus, seems obvious.
The image of the man on the shroud is tall, muscular, and to many, goodlooking. If one is to accept Biblical Scripture, then it becomes a requirement of faith that we accept what is found in the Old Testament prophecy regarding this historical Jesus, specifically in Isaiah 53:2. It says: “He hath no beauty or majesty to attract us to Him, nothing in His appearance that we should desire him.” According to this Scriptural source, Jesus was neither attractive nor handsome. In essence, Jesus was/is the very opposite of what the Shroud of Turin manifests.
Additionally, the image on the shroud is of a tall, muscular man. Computerized analysis clearly confirm and show the man on the shroud to be as tall as 6’ 1” but no shorter than 5’ 11 ½ “ in height. Archeological

Studying skeletal remains and the height of doors from excavated houses in areas where Jesus grew up and preached all seem to suggest this. This is not to say there were no exceptionally tall individuals during that time. There were. But, it was not the norm in that part of the world, twenty-one centuries ago, in what is now known as the Middle East. Of this, there is universal agreement, with no dissension among the cognoscenti.
That Jesus may have been of even smaller (stature) than the average Semitic male of his day has not been without its supporters. Proponents of this theory often cite a possible clue that may be found in the Gospel of Luke (19:3), wherein Zaccheus attempts to glimpse the charismatic Jesus, who is preaching to a large crowd of followers: “And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and he could not for the crowd, because he was low of stature.” It is uncertain, however, if this Gospel account is referring to Zaccheus, or the historical Jesus being low of stature. This ambiguity precludes any proof, one way or the other.
However, Jesus’ small stature is, again, alluded to in the ancient Gnostic writings found in The Acts of John, verse 90: “ . . . I was afraid and cried out, and he, turning about, appeared as a man of small stature.” However, this 2nd-century Gnostic text is not considered a canonical, or trustworthy, source and has even been deemed heretical by mainstream Christology. Nonetheless, Scriptural references to Jesus’ small height is further alluded to from Mary Magdalene, when she found his tomb empty and inquired of the ‘gardener,’ where is Jesus? Magdalene then promised to lift

Jesus’ body up to carry him away if only she was told where he lay. As one antiquity scholar opined, “Obviously, if Mary Magdalene were capable of physically lifting Jesus up, he would have been of very small stature, even for his day. If the average Semite, two-thousand years ago, was 5’ 1” tall and weighed only 110 pounds, and Jesus was considered small by the standards of his own day – then, he would have been below the norm in both height and weight, as previously stated.”
The various references of the historical Jesus being of very small physical stature, even amongst his contemporaries, are too abundant to be dismissed. Even the Slavonic copy of “Josephus’ Capture of Jerusalem,” (a source outside of Biblical Scripture) contains the following description of a man wanted by Pontius Pilate for claiming that he was the King of the Jews: “A man of simple appearance, mature age, dark skin, small stature, three cubits high (three cubits is 4’ 5” in height), hunchbacked with a long face, long nose and meeting eyebrows. And with scanty hair with the parting in the middle of his head, after the manner of the Nazarites, and with an undeveloped beard.” The above description is a most rare and fleeting glimpse of who the world’s foremost Biblical scholars decidedly agree to be Jesus, the Nazarene, and the centerpiece of their Christian faith.
Another source outside of Biblical Scripture, and found in the Islamic faith, within the Qur’an, the holy book for all Muslims, there is mentioned, also, of Jesus’ small stature. According to the Qur’an (Koran), one night a winged snow-white beast takes the prophet Mohammad to Jerusalem to the Temple where Mohammad meets Moses and Jesus. It’s that time of year again and North County residents are well aware of the fire danger they face every year in the fall months. This year is no exception. The National Weather Service has issued a red flag fire warning through Monday evening. Forecasters issued the warning due to the potentially dangerous mix of Santa Ana winds, high temperatures and low humidity. Daytime highs will be about 10 degrees above normal on Sunday, and up to 15 degrees above average on Monday. The temperature will hit the 90s across the mountains and inland valleys, and the 80s at and near the coast. Man Accused of Murdering his Valley Center Mom to Plead Insanity?
It happened back in 2010 and the case finally appears to be headed toward a hearing.
David Leroy Lucero, 31, is accused of killing his mother in her Valley Center hilltop home. His father, a prominent physician in Valley Center, hired famed criminal attorney Mark Geragos who had requested a mental competency hearing for Lucero. He was found not competent to stand trial and was committed to Patton State, a forensic psychiatric hospital in San Bernardino County. Lucero’s mental illness always has been an issue. Most of the last six years has been spent at Patton. However, under state law, the case against Lucero had to move forward within three years or he would be released. As three years approached, prosecutors won a grand
jury indictment against Lucero — not for the slaying, but for an unrelated allegation that he’d battered a deputy while in custody in 2011. Through that indictment, they were able to win what is called a “Murphy conservatorship,” which allowed them to keep Lucero in custody. In January, the prosecution secured a grand jury indictment in the murder case. Trial is set for next April.
He was deemed competent last year, and was sent back to San Diego County to face legal proceedings. The background of the case: Murder and car theft charges were filed against Lucero after the stabbing death of his mother, 53-year-old Margo Jean Lucero, who worked at a local casino.
Her husband and daughter found her dead in the family’s upscale home on March 9 of that year.
Later that night, the slain woman's Mercedes was found abandoned in the Arizona desert, and police arrested David Lucero for trespassing on the Tohono O'odham Reservation near Tucson. Authorities eventually returned him to California on the murder warrant. The day before his mother's body was found, Lucero was reportedly behaving so strangely that his mother called authorities for help. The deputy who responded to the Costalota Road home declined to take Lucero into custody for mental observation.
An attorney representing David Leroy Lucero told a Vista judge that Lucero may change his plea from not guilty to not guilty by reason of insanity. Lucero

Saucering: Does anyone still do it?
I remember as a young lad, about a hundred years or so ago, that my grandma Tollefson and many of my aunts and uncles in Minnesota, and some in Nebraska, would "saucer" their coffee.
You'd pour a cup of hot coffee then tilt your cup and let coffee run into your saucer, presumably to cool. Then you would sip it from your saucer. Haven't heard or seen of that practice for years. I suspect this was a midwestern thing, perhaps brought over from the Scandinavian or German countries. Don't recall ever seeing it in California. Anyone familiar with this practice? And is it still done? In Minnesota? Nebraska? California?
I got one of my credit card statements and there had been no activity since 9/03/16. That told me that the probability was high that it was not stolen but simply lost or misplaced.
After about a month of anguish, sweating it out at night while trying to sleep, worrying about it first thing in the morning . . . after searching every room of the house and still not finding it, I was reduced to the point that I had come to accept I was gonna have to wait in line for hours to renew my lost driver’s license, call all my credit card companies . . . A review of a search warrant obtained by the San Diego Union-Tribune outlines some of the details of the case against Diana Lovejoy and Weldon McDavid. The sworn statements from Carlsbad police investigators lay out how a sketchy phone call lured Lovejoy’s husband to a dark Carlsbad road where he was shot, and outline how police zeroed in on the suspects. Lovejoy and her firearms instructor, Weldon McDavid, are accused of consipracy to commit murder. Both have pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy and attempted murder, and each is jailed in lieu of $2 million bail.
Lovejoy’s estranged husband, Greg Muvihhill, had been locked in a contentious custody battle with Lovejoy. The couple had been married for nearly seven years when Mulvihill filed for divorce in 2014 — a month after Lovejoy obtained a temporary restraining order against him and had him removed from their Carlsbad home. The pair fought bitterly over custody of their son, who turned 4 earlier this month. Lovejoy initially had primary custody of the child, but she and Mulvihill were splitting custody at the time of the shooting. The preliminary hearing is set for Dec. 15.

It used to be the deck hands would clean and fillet your tuna for $5 a fish. No more. Fish and Game says they can no longer do that. Apparently, they frown on throwing the entrails overboard. (Wouldn’t ttose entrails provide food for other marine life?) Secondly, the boat returned to San Diego at 2:30am . . . but had to anchor in the harbor until 5am when the dock opened. Seems there could be a simple solution to let boats return to dock when they return to the harbor, regardless of time.
So, Kenny had to haul his considerable load of tuna up to Escondido where he spent four hours in the fish cleaning room, filleting his fish. As a result, he has loads of Ahi (tuna). He gave dear old dad about a ton of it. Freezer and refrigerator is full. I love fish but not that much of it. Lots of folks like to eat Ahi raw. Not me. Love sushi, don’t care much for sashimi. So, many family and friends will be getting gifts of Ahi tuna from The Man About Town. ••••• Like most of you I watched the debate Monday night. With all the Main Stream Media hype I had expected more fireworks. While I didn’t find the debate boring I was dissapointed. Perhaps my expectations were too high?

Regardless of who wins in November, I don’t think I’m gonna be thrilled with our next President.
Speaking of elections, and I just was . . . we finish publishing our endorsements for candidates in this week’s issue. Being a local paper we tend to focus more on local and/or regional candidates. ••••• You will note that we do not list the candidates we endorse by party. That is by design. I do not, and have not for years, endorsed, supported, or voted for candidates running for election or re-election based on political party. I vote for the man or woman I think will do the best job for our community. Of all the races, we had the greatest interest in the Escondido race for City Treasurer. Five original candidates, all good people, all of whom I have known or met. All of whom I like and respect..
In the end, we came down to two candidates that we felt were most worthy of supporting. This decision was the most difficult one we had to make. The two candidates were Doug Schultz and Ryan Clark.
We were strongly opposed to the $120,000 plus salary, plus $4500 plus car allowance for what was essentially a part time job. Ryan Clark has pledged to me and the elecctorate that if elected, he will tender his resignation to his present employer and serve full time as city treasurer. Accordingly, we are endorsing Ryan Clark for Escondido City Treasurer and fully expect him to keep his personal pledge to me and you.

Based on these historical accounts, both within the Christian and Islamic religions, as well as non-Christian secular sources, the historical Jesus was both very short (even for his era), as well as decidedly unattractive. Such physicalities would, rationally, cancel out Jesus as being 6’ 1” tall, muscular, and attractive, all of which is seen in the image of the Shroud of Turin.
DID THE BIBLICAL JESUS EVER LAUGH? As frivolous as this query may appear, it remains one of the most intriguing and popular questions among Christian followers, themselves. Though this may not seem a pivotal question for so-called Christian salvation, a majority of Christian followers, nevertheless, seem most curious about this personal aspect of their alleged God incarnate. As such, it would be gravely insensitive to ignore their curiosity on this issue. This craving for Messianic details is worldwide and persists at an enormous, growing level of popularity. One only need to pop-in at various Christian websites and various blogs to see how expansive this one query is in casual Christian dialogue and animated discussions. Whether one agrees or not with the gravity or importance of such details, it is highly democratic to give the people that which they wish to know.
While it is true that there is no shortage of Scriptural passages praising laughter and humor as an attribute, such as in Job 8:22: “He will yet fill your mouth with laughter, and your lips with shouting,” and Psalms 126:2 states “Then our mouth was filled with laughter and our tongue with shouts of joy, then they said among the nations, ‘The Lord has done great things for them,’” a growing number of Christians crave specifics regarding examples of Jesus, himself, laughing.
To conjecture that he did, because he honored the Scriptures, seems not adequate for many which comprise the Christian faithful. In one live Christian discussion a pastor attempted to satisfy curiosity by merely stating a generality: “Since he lived in the flesh, it would only seem natural that he laughed during his lifetime.” The pastor’s good intention was quickly met with condescension: “With all due respect, pastor, we are equally aware of that assumption. Already been there, already thought of that,” was one honest, but firm reply from one Christian girl who seemed to have quick endorsements from her Christian peers in the global chat room. Observing the proceedings, it became clear that Christians (both young and old) only wished to be shown in Scripture where this Nazarene laughed, for it is a requirement of their faith to remain faithful to what Scripture clearly states and
not deviate into dangerous noncanonical speculation and evanescent sentimentality. These were smart, eclectic Christians, and they only wished for responsible replies and non-condescending generalities, of which they were already wellaware. Their question persisted, in this regard. “Show me.”
In another scenario, in the muchread publication, Christianity, this same curiosity was present – why doesn’t the Bible show that Jesus laughed? And also, in the Ligonier Ministries, The Teaching of Fellowship, there is a growing, nonstop, repetition of this same query, a query that refuses to go away by the faithful.
In a Christian chat room, a Bible Study teachers made reference that Yeshua (Jesus) made an exaggerated analogy that revealed his sense of humor and probably made his disciples laugh out loud: “And again I say to you that it is easier for a camel to enter the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of God.” However, this is not a humorous analogy. Quite the opposite. It is a tragically sad commentary of lost souls, and widespread suffering and eternal condemnation – all of which is never an amusing or laughing matter.
One minister said humor was conveyed in Jesus’ remark regarding “The blind leading the blind.” Once more, this is not amusing nor funny, except to the sadist. Rather, it comments on a most regrettable and insufferable human condition. So powerful and pervasive is this Christian curiosity of Jesus’ earthly character that the worldwide internet reflects it, such as in this common posting, this one from Europe: “The Buddha never weeps, but he laughs. Jesus never laughs, but he weeps.”
Remarkably, there is a very powerful testament – within Scriptural guidelines – that answers this question. It is not clearly stated, but unlike mere conjecture – it is more than just assumption, it is a scenario which strongly connects the dots. Oddly, this truth remains shrouded, veiled, and ostensibly sits there for special eyes, as the Biblical Jesus stated in his Aramaic language: “Blessed are your eyes because they see and your ears because they hear.”
In Matthew 19:14, a tired Jesus sits, with children gleefully approaching him. His disciples attempt to keep the children from bothering him, during his moment of respite. They are immediately chastised in translated Aramaic, “Let the little children come to me and do not try to stop them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” This is a most significant moment. It reveals much to the eyes and ears. During ancient times, secular and religious antiquity scholars know that the Jewish children loved laughter and occupied much of their leisure
times playing an assortment of games. That the children ran to him, laughing, and full of childlike joy reveals that Yeshua (Jesus) must have been a fun, humorous, and joyful person to be with. It belabors the obvious, that such Jewish children refrained and avoided adults who appeared too serious, too foreboding, too frightening to fraternize with. By all reasonable accounts, the children ran to a laughing, fun-filled Jesus who sat them upon his lap and entertained them in childlike fun and storytelling.
According to antiquity scholars, both Christian and secular, Hebrew children during Jesus’ time played a variety of games, such as “Kugelach” (Five Stones), which dates back over 4,000 years. There were a multitude of Jewish games such as with rudimentary dice and stones. One Hebrew scholar states, “That Israelite children had toys (dolls, models of animals, etc.) cannot be doubted in view of the archeological discoveries in Jerusalem, Egypt and elsewhere. Children are universal – they all like to play, and sing, dance, and make up imaginary games. Always finding ways to laugh and be merry. They never would have run to Yeshua (Jesus) if he were a somber, ill-tempered Rabbi. The children enthusiastically ran to him because he made them feel welcomed, and for Hebrew children – that meant laughter and fun-time.” Today, there rests a tablet in the British Museum which contains an ancient Semitic text of children during the time of Yeshua (the Christian

Jesus). There, an ancient Aramaic script tells of how the Hebrew children loved to dance, sing, laugh frequently, and partake of riddle-making and riddle-guessing. They were only known to freely run to the most joyful and happy of neighbors and acquaintances. That these Hebrew children, by their own free will, yearned to be in the presence of the historical Jesus serves up the most powerful of examples of how he, most assuredly, had laughed with them – both loudly and frequently.
CONCLUSION: On any given Sunday one can view and hear opposing sides of the Christian Bible at San Diego’s verdant grounds known as Balboa Park, where Christian and atheist booths are entrenched in warfare, sometimes clashing openly, with verbal jousting, each passionately presenting their respective ‘proof ’ system of invisible weights, measurements, and counterbalances. On one particularly sunny afternoon, after an acrimonious clash of ideologies, a staunch Christian walks away from an atheist booth stating his parting shot, “I’ll pray for you.”
Before the Christian traces three footsteps into the beautiful green grass, he hears the atheist counter reply: “And I will think for you.” Within our world of modern science, computers, space explorations,

Assembly Bill 189 (AB 189), new legislation I co-authored this session, encourages the California Arts Council to designate cultural districts throughout the state. These districts can have a major economic impact on their communities and on the state’s overall economy. For example, a 2014 report from Maryland indicated that the state’s 20 Arts and Entertainment Districts supported approximately 5,144 jobs and generated more than $458 million, along with $149.2 million in output and wages during fiscal year 2013.
California’s Arts Council is now developing our first official statewide cultural program. Since every community is unique, the character of our state should be reflected in the cultural districts we establish. It is my hope that communities in North San Diego and Southwest Riverside Counties will take advantage of this opportunity to generate enthusiasm among arts organizations, civic leaders, public institutions, the business sector and citizens to enhance our region by establishing dynamic and economically viable cultural arts districts.

and delving into the inner worlds of invisible atoms and molecules which make up the structure of what we physically see – there is much beyond the horizon, beyond our science, and beyond our thoughts. As to their being a Prime Mover, a triune Godhead is fanciful thinking which can never be proven, one way or the other. Objectively, it is beyond the reach and scope of ultimate proof. From our present vantage point of imperfect human minds, it is inconsistent for us to truly comprehend that which is infinite or beyond our limits and capabilities.
All of which brings to mind a haunting narrative by Hungarian writer, Utmutato a Leleknek, and translated into English by Miranda Linda Weisz:
In a mother’s womb were two babies. One asked the other: “Do you believe in life after delivery?” The other replied, “Why, of course. There has to be something after delivery. Maybe we are here to prepare ourselves for what we will be later.”
“Nonsense,” said the first. “There is no life after delivery. What kind of life would that be?” The second said, “I don’t know, but there will be more light than here. Maybe we will walk with our legs and eat from our mouths. Maybe we will have other senses that we can’t understand now.”
The first replied, “That is absurd. Walking is impossible. And eating with our mouths? Ridiculous! The umbilical cord supplies nutrition and everything we need. But the umbilical cord is so short. Life after delivery is to be logically excluded.” The second insisted, “Well, I think there is something and maybe it’s different than it is here. Maybe we won’t need this physical cord anymore.”
Mysterious Bible, It’s Strange Influence and Evasive Mysteries,” I thought it would fit in well. As that Communist-run newspaper, China Daily, said (at the beginning of this article): “It does not matter if the Bible is a hard copy or software, as long as the reader can find inner peace.”
I don’t know about you, but that paradigmatic individual, that Nazarene from twenty-one centuries ago has brought me plenty of inner peace. He was a homeless vagabond, who lived the most virtuous life ever accorded any human being; and who uttered the most stunning and breathtaking passages I have ever read or heard in my lifetime, from any philosophy, university, book, or human voice. Words of infinite wisdom; piercing pearls of insight; endless beauty encapsulated in simple, timeless parables. He held the world spellbound, then and now, as no other, before or since. In the entire sweep of human history, his life is unmatched. His life was a marvel of crystallized splendor of what we could ever hope to become.
It has been over two thousand years now, and we are still thunderstruck by his Sermon on the Mount. Nothing in all of literature comes close to its luster, sweeping majesty, and grace. It is my belief that He healed the sick; let the crippled walk; cured the blind; made whole the disfigured; cleansed the lepers; made pure the harlots; restored lost souls; and raised the dead. And then, He raised himself.
He is of the Triune Godhead. The metaphysical Alpha and Omega. The Light and the Truth, and the Way. He is the Ever-Lasting Life. And He is our true Parent. Of that, and for me, there is no Biblical mystery.
The first replied, “Nonsense. And moreover, if there is life, then why has no one ever come back from there? Delivery is the end of life, and in the after-delivery there is nothing but darkness and silence and oblivion. It takes us nowhere.”
“Well, I don’t know,” said the second, “but certainly we will meet Mother and she will take care of us.”
The first replied, “Mother? You actually believe in Mother? That’s laughable. If Mother exists then where is She now?” The second said, “She is all around us. We are surrounded by her. We are of Her. It is Her that we live. Without Her this world would not and could not exist.” Said the first, “Well, I don’t see Her! So, it is only logical that She doesn’t exist.”
To which the second replied: “Sometimes, when you’re in silence and you focus and you really listen, you can perceive Her presence, and you can hear Her loving voice, calling down from above.”

‘McKinley’ Gave Way to ‘Denali’ Long Ago
Is it “Denali,” the name given it by Native Americans several centuries ago, or is it “Mount McKinley,” dubbed as such by a not-so-long ago gold prospector? It’s Alaska’s crown jewel among its many high mountains.
It is the highest mountain in North America. Since 1917, when it was officially named by the U.S. government, it’s been Mount McKinley. Nonetheless, the Koyukon people who inhabit the land around the great peak have always referred to it as “Denali.” The name means “high,” or “tall” in the Koyukon language.
President William McKinley’s mountain officially lost its name when the U.S. Department of Interior, backed by the stroke of President Obama’s pen, made it so in 2015. Following the lead of the State of Alaska, the U.S. Department of Interior announced the new official name of “Denali” out of respect for the Native Americans who knew it as such for as far back as their history will take them.
For much of the 20th century, most school children learned the highest peak in the United States was Mount Whitney in the High Sierras of California. But, in North America it was “Mount McKinley,” which didn’t seem to be on anyone’s radar screen until Alaska became a state in 1959. Suddenly, in geography classes everywhere, Mount McKinley shoved Mount Whitney to the side of the Sierras – it was just the highest peak in the “Lower 48” as Alaskans refer to us. But, it was a moot point because for years most Alaskans already referred to their mountain as “Denali.” At 20,310 feet above sea level, the great mountain is the third most isolated peak after Mount Everest and Aconcagua. Today, it is the centerpiece of Denali National Park & Preserve just north of Anchorage, which is one of Alaska’s most visited areas.
In 1896, a gold prospector named the mountain “McKinley” in political support for then-presidential candidate William McKinley, who became president the following year. The United States formally recognized Mount McKinley after President Wilson signed the Mount McKinley National Park Act of February 26, 1917. In 1965, Lyndon B. Johnson declared the north and south peaks of the mountain the "Churchill Peaks," in honor of British statesman Winston Churchill. The Alaska Board of Geographic
Names changed the name of the mountain to Denali in 1975, which was how it is called locally. However, a request in 1975 from the Alaska state legislature to the United States Board on Geographic Names to do the same at the federal level was blocked by Ohio congressman Ralph Regula, whose district included President McKinley's hometown of Canton. So, where does this all bring us – or, better yet, leave? If you were a student in the first half of the 20th century, you learned it was “Mount McKinley” that was the highest mountain in North America. “Mount Whitney” was always the correct answer on a geography question as to what was the highest peak in the United States.
I’m often corrected by younger folk when Alaska is discussed. I’ve been there, but it was back in 1961. And, yes I saw this giant white thing in the moonlight that filled the northern night sky from Anchorage. I was told by an Alaskan it was “Mount McKinley,” and I’ve always referred to it as such. It’s probably the only way most of us remember that particular president, who has nearly been lost in history. Since I don’t know any Koyukon Native Americans, I doubt that I’ll offend anyone by calling it by the name I’ve always called it, so there!

My friend’s new car came with satellite radio. The other day we were listening to “The Six Shooter,” a 1940’s western starring James Stewart. Yes, that James Stewart. I miss that kind of radio. Dramas, soap operas, comedies, adventures, westerns. Talented voices and brilliant sound effects technicians came into our living rooms and automobiles and took us to places we could barely imagine. It seemed so real to me. When I was about four years old, our little table radio quit working and my dad opened up the back to look for a burnt out tube. I looked on with interest, expecting to see the people I had come to know listening to the radio inside that little box. Good story tellers draw a crowd.
Long before them, Jesus was a story teller. A good one. He called his stories “parables,” and they have become so much a part of our scriptures and our faith journey that we forget they started out as stories Jesus told to draw a crowd and take them to places they had never been and could hardly imagine. Jesus started with simple things, like planting seed in a field or losing some money in the house and took his listeners (and us as readers) to a new place that taught us that life is so much more than growing crops or chasing down that lost $20 bill that fell behind a chair or between the newspapers.
He taught spiritual lessons from real life examples. He helped us to see the spiritual principles that are sometimes difficult to understand and hard to imagine. Good stories, and good story tellers, draw a crowd. You can start looking in the gospel of Matthew, around Chapter 13 or Luke’s gospel, in Chapter 15. And be ready to go to new places you can hardly imagine.

New California organic recycling laws for 2016
This April, a new California o r g a n i c s recycling law went into effect that requires businesses and multifamily complexes of five or more units to recycle their organic waste. Organic waste means food waste, green waste, landscape and pruning waste, nonhazardous wood waste, and foodsoiled paper waste that is mixed in with food waste. The new law will go into effect in three phases:
• April 1, 2016: Businesses generating 8 cubic yards of organic waste per week • January 1, 2017: Businesses
generating 4 cubic yards of organic waste per week • January 1, 2019: Businesses generating 4 cubic yards of solid waste (trash) per week The City of San Marcos and EDCO will be working closely with food waste generating customers to meet the new State requirements using a threepronged approach: prevention of food waste, donation of edible food, and collection of non-edible food. Renovations Coming to Bub Williamson Park
Bub Williamson Park is one of the last remaining parks to receive an upgrade as part of the City’s $8 million Parks Improvement Project. The park renovations are currently in the design phase and include new amenities to the existing, underutilized site, located in northwest Vista. Improvements include a lighted arena soccer field, a dog park, a children's play area, and renovated restrooms. Conceptual designs were presented to the Parks and Recreation Commission in April and the City Council.
