You and I are both military men, so our anxiety and pain runs extremely deep. I want my country back. I want my country's dignity and honor and respect back. I want other nations to trust us again. I want our allies and friends who fought alongside our troops, not to be abandoned and forsaken.

I want my fellow Americans still in Afghanistan back home. Now. I don't want The Paper - 760.747.7119

them abandoned there. This is not the American way that I knew when I served. This is not the same country which I took an oath to honor, obey, and defend when I (volunteered) and was inducted into the U. S. military.

You don't leave members of my military family stranded, abandoned, and forsaken there.

I want my country back. She is sacred ground for me. She is worth saving. I cannot live without her.

America today is a country that betrays its citizens as well as its allies. Look at the riots in Seattle on May Day, 2021 . . property destuction and personal injuries . . .

City government takes only limited action against these gangs of thugs.

Our city governments appear to be giving in to organized thugs and betraying its citizens.

And its not just local . . its nationwide and its worldwide. The world no longer recognizes America as a major power that they can depend upon. Or trust.

We are seeing Afghanistan now . . but remember back to 1975 when Saigon fell? And we left thousands of S. Vietnamese who had served the US military as translators, interpretors, contractors, military members . . .civil servants . . . who were captured by the North Vietnamese Army and either executed, imprisoned, or sent to "re-education camps."

Vietnam and we gave our word, as representatives of the US Government, that we would evacuate them and their families as well.

The ships never came to Danang and the American Marine advisors were detached and flown out. The RVN Marines, and their families, were left behind.

If you check the details - all funding for RVN had expired and President Ford had a new funding bill that would have funded the withdrawal by ships. It was defeated in the Senate by one vote, a new senator by the name of Biden.

That bothers me to this day. I grew up believing when you gave your word you lived by that commitment.

The US government did not live up to its word and abandoned those proud and loyal Vietnamese Marines that fought and died for us."

Just one more example of our government, and our nowPresident, betraying our allies.

Democrat's Answer: Well, that's not enough information to answer the question! What is a Kimber 1911 cal. 45 ACP? Does the man look poor or oppressed? Is he really a terrorist?

Am I guilty of profiling?

Have I ever done anything to him that would inspire him to attack? Could we run away?

What does my wife think?

What about the kids? Could I possibly swing the gun like a club and knock the knife out of his hand?

What does the law say about this situation? Does the pistol have appropriate safety built into it? Why am I carrying a loaded gun anyway, and what kind of message does this send to society and to my children? Is it possible he'd be happy with just killing me? Does he definitely want to kill me, or would he be content just to wound me? If I were to grab his knees and hold on, could my family get away while he was stabbing me? Should I call 9-1-1? Why is this street so deserted? Can we make this a happier, healthier street that would discourage such behavior. I need to debate this with some friends for a few days and try to come to a consensus. This is all so confusing!

BIRMINGHAM—The 16th Street Baptist Church is your quintessential church. It’s a stout building with real downtown character. Red clay brick.

Ornate stained glass. The whole enchilada.

There are homeless men seated on the curb. One man is asking people for money. He zeroes in on me.

He’s smoking a cigarette while wearing a medical mask at the same time.

Which is impressive.

“You wanna know more about this church?” he asks.

His old T-shirt is ratty and stained.

His skin is aged. He offers to tell me the church’s story in exchange for a few bucks. A “donation,” he calls it.

I bite.

He pockets the money and launches into a spiel.

Son: 'Can I shoot the next one?!'

Wife: 'You ain't taking that to the Taxidermist!

•••• I've just been thinking. You know all those erectile dysfunction tv ads?

How they warn about four hour erections? Ever wonder how the medical staff relieves those erections? Ice picks? Scalpel? Syringes?

...and the guy says, "That's what I said, diddle I?" •••• Harley Davidson is closing many of its plants due to declining sales.

Apparently, the Baby-Boomers all have motorcycles, and Generation X is only buying a very few, and the next generation, the Millennial's, aren’t buying any at all.

A recent study was conducted to find out why. Here are reasons why Millennial sdon't ride motorcycles, and why sales are down :

1. Pants won't pull up far enough for them to straddle the seat.

“This structure was designed in the turn of the century by a dude named Wallace Rayfield.” He pushes his mask aside and lights another bent Camel.

Rayfield was American history’s second black architect. He was formally educated in Columbia University, and in 1899 he was a unique treasure.

A lot of people consider this building to be one of his masterstrokes.

He designed buildings all over the U.S., there are nearly ten in Birmingham alone. He built others in New York, West Virginia, Arkansas, South Carolina, Georgia, Chicago, Pensacola, and one located in the little crossroads of Milton, Florida.

His creations are works of art in any town. Though you have to know where to look for them. Rayfield’s buildings recede into a cityscape like

2. Can't get their iPhone to their ear with a helmet on.

3. Can't use 2 hands to eat while driving.

4. They don't get a trophy and a recognition plaque just for buying one.

5. Don't have enough muscle to hold the bike up when stopped.

6. Might have a bug hit them in the face and then they would need emergency care..

7. Motorcycles don't have air conditioning.

8. They can't afford one because they spent 12 years in college trying to get a degree in Humanities, Art History, Social Studies, or Gender Studies for which no jobs are available.

9. They are allergic to fresh air.

10. Their pajamas get caught on the exhaust pipes.

11. They might get their hands dirty checking the oil.

12. The handle bars have buttons and levers and cannot be controlled by touch-screen.

13. You have to shift manually and use something called a clutch.

14. It's too hard to take selfies while riding.

15. They don't come with training wheels like their bicycles did.

16. Motorcycles don't have power steering or power brakes.

17. Their nose and eyebrow rings interfere with the face shield.

18. They would have to use leg muscle to back up.

Thousands of Afghan's were unable to be evacuated. The Taliban are likely to slaughter them . . men, women, and children . . if they even had a remote contact with Americans.

Biden also said it was unlikely the Taliban would completely overrun the country, which is what happened

Presiden Joe Biden gave strong assurances that the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan would not play out like the fall of Saigon at the conclusion of the Vietnam War.

I spoke with Congressman Darrell Issa recently and asked him if we were going to be able to evacuate the Afghani's who had worked with the Americans:

said Museum Day has a special significance this year, marking a reopening for many institutions across the country which have been shut for more than a year. Before the pandemic, the Valley Center visitor guest book had logged some 49,000 signatures and comments from guests who came from every state in the nation and many foreign countries.

Museum Day was launched 17 years ago by the Smithsonian whose own museums, like the one in Valley Center, are free yearround. Boyett said visitors are returning to the museum at 29200 Cole Grade Road in numbers comparable to pre-pandemic times, although groups and school tours are yet to be scheduled.

San Marcos Library Book Store Needs Volunteers - The San Marcos Library Book Store sells books to fund local library programs, and they are an all volunteer for America, now estimated at 18,000 from the original list of about 472,000, have been fighting for a war that they had already won but have yet to reap the benefits of.

Congressman Issa went to work to protect the Filipinos.

It is on record that Filipino soldiers who fought against the Japanese in the Philippines were ordered by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt into service in the U.S. Army. When the war broke out, the Philippines was a colony of the U.S.. Therefore, the Filipino soldiers were American nationals serving the USA. The Rescission Act of 1946, took those benefits away.

President Roosevelt once said: "The problems of the world cannot possibly be solved by skeptics or cynics whose horizons are limited by the obvious realities. We need men (and women) who can dream of things that never were.....The only limit to our realization of tomorrow will be our doubts about today. Let us move forward with strong and active faith."

And the valiant World War II Filipino heroes responded to this call and put their lives on the line to fight for the freedom that all of us now enjoy.

they’ve always been there.

“This church congregation is old, dude,” the man says. “Goes way back in time.”

This church was founded in 1873, it was the first organized black congregation in Birmingham. Some very well-known American men and women have spoken from this pulpit.

People you’ve heard of, like W.E.B. Du Bois, and Martin Luther King Jr.

The old man goes on, “The last time Doctor King came here, this place was, like, standing room only. And it was hot, brother. The only air conditioner back then was your mama’s right hand.”

This church, however, did not always have things so quaint. There is a headstone in the back of the building marking the reason why.

The year was 1963. On a midsummer day, a lot like today, things started off pretty normal. Downstairs some young church members were making preparations for the upcoming “Youth Day.” Youth Day was probably one of those things lots of churches still do. Fill the building with kids, sing your guts out, play games, eat some marvelous church-lady food. Repeat.

SUSPECT WHO SHOT MOTORIST IN ESCONDIDO DIES IN OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING AFTER VEHICLE PURSUIT

On September 17, at 5:01 PM, a suspect shot from his vehicle into another occupied vehicle in Escondido. The victim vehicle was occupied by a 20-year-old male driver and a 15-year-old passenger.

The driver of the victim vehicle received a gunshot wound and sought medical aid at Palomar Medical Center. The victim’s injuries were not life threatening and he was later released from the hospital. There is no known relationship between the suspect, the shooting victim, and passenger.

The initial investigating officers obtained a description of the suspect and his vehicle.

At 6:12 PM, an Escondido Police Officer spotted the suspect vehicle in the area of Washington Ave. and Citrus Ave. The suspect fled from police and a vehicle pursuit ensued.

At 6:19 PM, the suspect crashed at the intersection of Bear Valley Pkwy and Encino Drive. At the conclusion of the vehicle pursuit, an officer involved shooting occurred.

The suspect was in possession of a semi-automatic handgun at the scene. The suspect was transported to Palomar Medical Center and later died from his injuries.

The officer involved was not injured and his name will be

released at a later time. The suspect is a 38-year-old Escondido resident and his name will not be released until his family is notified. This investigation is ongoing.

WOMAN ATTACKS ESCONDIDO POLICE OFFICER WITH AXE

On September 20, at 8:55 a.m., Escondido Police dispatch received a 911 call of a woman near Valley Pkwy and Hickory Street hacking at the sidewalk with a short handle axe. Officers were dispatched to the scene to investigate the suspicious person.

At 9:03 a.m., An Escondido Police Officer located the female on the corner of Grape Street North of Valley Pkwy. As the officer pulled onto Grape Street the female ran out into the street. The officer attempted to drive away but the woman swung the axe twice at the officer through the open driver’s window of the patrol car. The officer was struck two times on his left arm, causing a laceration. The woman ran to the parking lot of the vacant downtown Palomar Medical Center and hid inside of a utility building.

Officers surrounded the structure and at 10:08 a.m., the suspect was taken into custody. The officer who was struck by the axe was treated for his injuries at Palomar Medical Center and his injuries are not life threatening. accented English . . but English.

And their eyes lit up with pride in their accomplishment. They were serenading us. In English!

My eyes were also affected. I found tears welling up and a tightness in my chest . . due to the same emotion. Pride. In our "kids."

Man About Town

Remembering . .

About 45 years ago my then-wife, Mary, and I "adopted" two Mexican kids. The youngest, Miguel, was, maybe 14 or 15 years old. The older of the two, Juan Manuel, was, maybe 20. They had crossed the border and were seeking to learn English, to make a living, and to be happy.

We made a home for them in our garage . . beds, furniture, dining table, all the comforts of home.

They wanted to learn English so we booked them in an Adult Education class which they attended religiously.

I remember one Christmas season when Miguel and Juan Manuel called us together in our living room. They wanted to serenade us.

They sang, "Silver Bells." Heavily

The boys returned home to La Mision, Baja Mexico . . about 40 miles south of the San Diego/Mexico border. Miguel met Maria, they married, and came back to the US. Miguel and Maria lived with us throughout her pregnancy.

Juan Manuel stayed in La Mision.

Maria delivered a son, Aaron.

Aaron has now grown into middle age. An adult. To this day Aaron calls me "grandpa."

Juan Manuel and his wife, Sylvia, also had several children, one of whom was Edgar.

Edgar, at age 38, suffered from asthma and with what appeared to be an asthma attack, went to the hospital.

It wasn't asthma. It was covid19.

The next day, Edgar died.

Our youngest son, Kenny, called us and broke the news. He then went to La Mision yesterday for the serv-

The suspect was identified as Aleisha Strickland and is a 28-yearold resident of Escondido. She was booked into Vista Detention Facility for PC 664/187 attempted murder and PC 245(c) – Assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer.

Update – Three Suspects Arrested for the July 31st Shooting at Holiday Park

On Monday, September 13, the City of Carlsbad Police Department arrested three men suspected of being involved in the July 31 shooting in the 3300 block of Eureka Avenue that resulted in one fatality and one seriously injured male.

With the assistance of the San Francisco Police Department, officers arrested 34-year-old Christopher Burlie, 21-year-old Abraham Gomez and 19-year-old Solomon Jackson, all from Arkansas, in the 1500 block of Lombard Street in San Francisco.

The trio were arrested for homicide and attempted homicide. They are currently being held in the San Francisco County Jail pending extradition back to San Diego County.

We heeded Kenny's advice and stayed here.

"The memorial service was very emotional," said Kenny. "Edgar's wife was inconsolable . . his two daughters and one son were as well.

It got to me, big time."

Following the service the family and friends went to Fred Einer's old beachfront property right on the coast of the Pacific Ocean. Fred had a beautiful home on the beach that Mary and I had visited several times. Very upscale. Fred was a very wealthy Engineering Contractor, built and owned Holiday Wine Cellar in Escondido (yet Fred did not drink). Fred has passed on and his beautiful property has been acquired by another wealthy individual.

They scattered Edgar's ashes in the ocean and the salt in the ocean was enhanced considerably by the many tears shed at the distribution of the ashes by each member of his family as well as close friends. Kenny's tears were blended into the ocean with those of the family.

•••• KUSI-TV is one of my favorite news stations in San Diego. Dan Plante is one of my favorite commentators . . he tells it like it is - in plain, straight from the shoulder English.

But why do they close out news segments in the morning and midday with musical acts? In a newscast? And the musical acts are all second rate. And a distraction from the news. Time for a change.

Veterans' Benefits Enhancement Act, was supported by an overwhelming vote of 96-1, the expectation was that Speaker Pelosi would take the lead role in ensuring approval of this Bill in the Lower House, considering that her present leadership commands a "simple majority," or an equivalent of 218 members of Congress favoring its approval. To get S.1315 to pass the House, Speaker Pelosi will need all 230 House Democrats to support it and at least 60 House Republicans to reach the magic number of 290 (two-thirds of the 435 total number of House members) in order to call for a Suspension of the Rules that would avoid killer amendments that would delay, if not kill the bill.

Again.

America today is a country that betrays its citizens as well as its allies. The world no longer recognizes America as a major power that they can depend upon. Or trust.

How can any ally, present, future, or potential, rely upon the US? Why would they commit their blood and treasure to support us when they now know we would most likely betray them when the chips were down?.

We lack leadership. Smart, disciplined, honest leadership.

There is no question but what we have one of the world's finest military organizations. Our troopers, no matter which branch of the service, have shown their courage, their heroism, their dedication to duty.

It's our leadership that is lacking.

10th Annual Fallbrook Scarecrow Days, October 1-31 - Skipping down the yellow brick road, the ScareCREW is preparing for the 10th year celebration of Scarecrow Days. Perched on a rooftop, Wizard of Oz characters have strength, courage and heart greeting cars. The field of gaunt Silent People with flowing garments make the journey to Fallbrook for the third year. This display is an adaptation from Suomussalmi, Finland. Over a 1,000 Silent People created by Reuijo are on permanent display.

In 1991, I was asked why the US could not assume a “limited” role in Bosnia. I had been engaged in limited military involvements before, in Vietnam for starters. I said, “As soon as they tell me it’s limited, it means they do not care whether you achieve a result or not. As soon as they tell me ‘surgical,’ I head for the bunker.” I criticized the pseudo-policy of establishing a US “presence” without a defined mission in trouble spots.

Why must we suffer a World War or a catastrophic attack on our homeland before we, as a nation, come together?

Why do we continue to have weak, undisciplined leadership at both the military and civilian government level?

Our military are still willing to head into a combat zone, putting their lives and limbs on the line, all to defend our nation. Whether or not our civilian population is willing, or even able, to physically and emotionally be willing to sacrifice if we were to go to war again, is questionable.

Young people, and even today's adults today have gotten used to a rather easy life. Many are pampered and get their little feelings bruised ever so easily.

Older readers will remember World War II and what they had to sacrifice.

Just How Tough Was World War II Rationing? Very!

People were asked to change their eating habits in order to help preserve more essential food for American troops. Things like sugar, butter and meat were all in short supply to the average public. People received ration coupons, which they used when purchasing items.

And it wasn’t just eating, People were also limited as to the amount of gasoline they could purchase. By the end of 1942, more than half of the vehicles in the country were limited to just four gallons of fuel a week (cars on average got about 15 MPG). War workers and other “essential” personnel could get more gasoline, but the vast majority of the public was limited in terms of personal driving.

Other industrial goods were also rationed. Tires were the first, because most rubber came from the Dutch East Indies, which was controlled by Japan. But steel was also crucial to the war effort. Consumer car production during the war was suspended. Manufacturers looked for alternate ways to package canned food goods.

People coped. Magazines discussed ways to use soy and other non-traditional products as meat and sugar substitutes. People planted Victory Gardens, backyard or neighborhood gardens where they could get unlimited amounts of vegetables for the dinner table.

The government asked people to buy War Bonds, essentially helping to financially support the war OVER AND ABOVE the taxes they paid. Bonds matured in 10 years and sold at 75% of their value.

Funding for our local firefighters

Many can remember recent San Diego wildfire disasters, including the Cedar, Witch, Cocos, Guejito and Lilac fires which devastated so much of this region. North County Fire Protection District, Valley Center Fire Protection District, and the Rincon Fire Department all serve communities with designated Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones.

There is a clear need to support our rural fire agencies. This year, in light of the state’s $38 billion budget surplus, I made three funding requests from the Assembly Budget Committee. Though questions have arisen involving funding for statewide fire suppression, I’m very happy to report my efforts to obtain local funding were successful.

The North County Fire Protection District recently took over a former volunteer fire station in Rainbow serving hard-to-reach areas, and additional funding became necessary. The station is being converted to full-time staffing and modular living quarters for the staff must be provided. The building also has significant deferred maintenance, and is in desperate need of an upgrade.

Valley Center Fire Protection District has seen significant call volume increases in recent years, and a third fire station in an underserved area has become necessary. The District also must upgrade existing facilities, and

is in need of a new Brush Fire Engine.

The Rincon Fire Department needs to replace an outdated fire apparatus.

The current apparatus is over 12 years old and is frequently out-ofservice. Last year the vehicle was unavailable three times when Rincon Fire was called to assist with large fire emergencies in Northern California. The Department’s existing radios are not compatible with new communications technology, and upgraded PPE is sorely needed. .

Happily, my funding request was approved for $2,660,000 so these three rural districts, which do so much to safeguard our homes, our communities and our very lives can continue their vital, life-saving mission.

I’m a huge supporter of activities that promote the health and wellbeing of residents in North County.

We are incredibly lucky to live in such a beautiful County, that has a wide array of outdoor activities, including hiking. The County of San Diego Department of Parks and Recreation manages hundreds of miles of trails in over 130 parks and preserves across San Diego.

If you’re looking for somewhere to go, the San Elijo Lagoon is a great place to start. It’s an easy trail with a nature center loop of .75 miles.

The lagoon is one of San Diego’s largest wetlands with a shallow water estuary. Also, there’s the Guajome Regional Park in Oceanside. It’s an easy 3-mile loop dirt trail that meanders through woodland, chaparral, wetland and mixed grassland habitats. The routes are flat and cater to people of all abilities year-around.

Or climb through 774 acres of open space in the Del Dios Highlands County Preserve. The moderate level trek spans 2.6+ miles around several bends and a high point offers views of Lake Hodges and the Pacific Ocean.

If you want a challenge, check out Hellhole Canyon County Preserve in Valley Center. The Hell Creek Trail offers 13.5 miles of moderateto-advanced paths above Hell Creek to the top of Rodriguez Mountain. In the spring, lilac blooms shine white and purple as far as the eye can see! You can find more information at sdparks.org.

As I mentioned earlier, we are incredibly fortunate to live in such a beautiful County, let’s take advantage of all it has to offer by getting outside!

Q: In 2019, we bought VIP tickets to the 2020 Tampa Bay Blues Festival. Because of COVID-19, organizers have rescheduled the festival twice. Along this two-year journey, ticket holders were twice offered refunds or to "roll" them over to the next year -- and then the next year. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen medical issues with my husband in late 2020, we are now asking for a refund. The organizers will not respond to voice messages or emails other than a "form" letter denying our refund request.

I would like my $1,000 refunded since my husband's doctor has told us to refrain from going to concerts.

A: I'm sorry about your husband's condition. If the organizers offered a refund, they should send you one promptly. But did they?

You sent a Facebook post which you say showed that the organizers had offered a refund. It seemed like an open-and-shut case. But like so many other cases during the pandemic, there was more to this.

Typically, concert tickets are nonrefundable. You can buy insurance to protect you from a cancellation, and you can always try to resell your tickets. But once you buy a concert or music festival ticket, you own it.

I asked the organizers about that Facebook post. A festival representative said the original post "was intended to alert folks of the festival postponement order" by Tampa officials.

"We had no idea at that time whether the entire festival could be salvaged," he added. "This was early in the COVID-19 crisis, and no one knew much about our collective futures."

But soon after that, the organizers of the Tampa Bay Blues Festival rescheduled the entire event. They even included the original artists.

If the event had been canceled, then everyone would have received a refund, the representative added.

"Fortunately, such a total cancellation did not occur."

The <a href="https://www.etix.com/ticket/online3/purchasepolicy.jsp">terms of your purchase</a> were clear: Your tickets were nonrefundable. The organizers also believed the terms allowed them to reschedule the event and not offer a refund. According to the organizers, a social media post does not eliminate any contractual arrangements with you.

I disagree. The event didn't take place on the day it had been scheduled. In my book, that is a cancellation. The event organizers are treating this as they would a brief rain delay. But the event has been rescheduled to April 8, 2022. That's a lot of rain!

What's more, the organizers should have been compassionate about your circumstances. If your husband's health has deteriorated and you can no longer attend the festival, that should count for something.

I contacted the Tampa Bay Blues Festival on your behalf. The organizers offered to help you resell your tickets. But unfortunately, they refused your request for a refund. I recommend asking your bank if it might allow you to dispute your credit card charges.

A Disease That Will Sneak Up On You

Historically speaking, a 19th century malady that is becoming more and more prevalent in today’s modern society is “Parkinson’s Disease.” PD is thought to occur primarily with the elderly. That’s not necessarily always the case. There are no easy explanations to its cause and it can hit all ages … even the young.

Males are more often affected than females at a ratio of around 3 to 2.

When it is seen in people younger than the age of 50, it is called “early-onset Parkinson’s.”

It's been more than a year. Could you please help me get either an extension or a refund for my BritRail tickets? -Brent Norgaard, Minneapolis

A: If ACP Rail offered an extension for your BritRail tickets, it should have processed the extension quickly.

ACP is a distributor of rail products. It has an exclusive arrangement to sell BritRail tickets, so it should have been able to fix your ticket quickly.

What happened? The pandemic. ACP was working on thousands of ticket requests like yours. And what should have been a routine extension turned into a one-year wait.

"Given the fact that we have been offpremise for almost four months and due to the backlog of work, we do expect some delays," a representative told you. "We are doing our utmost to ensure all cases are actioned as quickly as possible but ask for your kind patience as we diligently work through the backlog."

It looks as if ACP intended to refund your tickets rather than try to extend them. You can read its refund rules <a href="https://www.acprail.com/termsand-conditions1/">on the ACP site</a>. Generally, rail tickets are more flexible than airline tickets, and you were better off just taking the refund and buying new tickets when you needed them.

Under the <a href="https://www.britrail.com/britrail -passes/britrail-pass/">terms of your purchase</a>, you should be able to get a full refund. BritRail notes that it will refund your purchase if "the unvalidated Pass or original exchange coupon or voucher is returned to the office from which it was purchased within 11 months from the date of issue (unless a different time period is spec-

When young people like actor Michael J. Fox, boxer Muhammed Ali, and singer Linda Ronstadt are afflicted the age factor sort of goes out the window.

Fox was 27 when he was diagnosed; Ali was 38, and Ronstadt was 67, but I don’t consider any age in the sixties as “elderly.” Still, older victims such as well-known actor Alan Alda are more commonplace. I was 75 when I was diagnosed.

PD is a long-term degenerative disorder of the central nervous system that mainly affects the motor nerves. The symptoms usually emerge slowly, and as the disease worsens, non-motor symptoms become more common. The most obvious early symptoms are tremor, rigidity, slowness of movement, and difficulty with walking and keeping balanced.

By 2015, it was estimated PD affected more than 6 million people and resulted in about 117,400 deaths globally.

The average life expectancy following diagnosis is between 7 and 15 years.

The cause of PD is unknown with both inherited and environmental factors being believed to play a role. Those with a family member affected by PD are at an increased risk of getting the disease, with certain genes known to be inheritable risk factors. Other risk factors are those who have been exposed to certain pesticides and who have prior head injuries. Cognitive and behavioral problems also may occur with many victims suffering from depression, anxiety, and apathy.

Dementia can become commonplace

in the advanced stages of PD.

Boxers such as Ali, and those sports figures who have sustained a number of blows to head often have developed PD. Football players often are victims of PD. Football organizations at all levels lately have established a number of rules and procedures to minimize head trauma.

Those suffering with Parkinson's also can have problems with their sleep and sensory systems. The motor symptoms of the disease result from the dead cells in the mid-brain leading to a dopamine deficit. The cause of this cell death is not very well understood. Diagnosis of typical PD cases is usually based on symptoms when motor skills difficulties are the patient’s chief complaint.

The bad news at this point in time: no cure for PD is known. For those of us with PD, treatment can reduce the effects of the symptoms. Initial treatment is done typically with medications such as levodopa, or dopamine agonists. As the disease progresses, experience has shown these medications become less effective.

Actor Fox has greatly increased the public awareness of the disease. After diagnosis, Fox embraced his Parkinson's in television roles, sometimes acting without medication, to further illustrate the effects of the condition. He has appeared before Congress without medication to illustrate the effects of the disease. The Michael J. Fox Foundation aims to develop a cure for Parkinson's disease.

Professional cyclist and Olympic medalist Davis Phinney, who was diagnosed with young-onset Parkinson's at age 40, started the Davis Phinney Foundation in 2004 to support PD research, focusing on quality of life for people with the disease.

Boxer Ali showed signs of PD when he was 38, but was not diagnosed until he was 42. He has been called the "world's most famous Parkinson's patient.”

There continues to be debate on whether he actually had PD caused from boxing. At the time of his suicide in 2014, actor-comedian Robin Williams had been diagnosed with PD. A physician initially assesses for PD with a careful medical and neurological history. Focus is put on confirming motor symptoms and supporting tests with clinical diagnostic criteria being discussed by a physician and PD specialist.

Be aware multiple causes often mimic PD making it look similar to the disease. Stroke, certain medications, and toxins can cause "secondary parkinsonism" and need to be thoroughly and properly assessed. Parkinson-plus syndromes, such as progressive palsy and multiple system atrophy should be considered and ruled out appropriately due to different treatment and disease progression.

For those losing their motor skills such as walking and difficulties in keeping balance, swallow your pride and use a walker both indoors and out. The results of a bad fall can be worse than any disease.

The above information on PD is just that … information. It is a complex disease and should be thoroughly discussed with your physician and a PD specialist to make sure you get the correct information and treatment.

LION during the war, and more than 85 million Americans — half the population — purchased them.

Everyone, including children, was issued a ration book, each of which had a certain number of rationing points per week. Meat and processed foods, vital for soldiers abroad, had high points. Fresh fruit and vegetables had no points.

Supplies such as gasoline, butter, canned milk and sugar were rationed so they could be provided for the war effort. Many people got three gallons of gas a week. The

people here were standing in line for sugar, the first and last commodity that was rationed. The allocation was half a pound a week, half of what Americans typically consumed.

Armies travel on their bellies.

Although the federal government was promoting increased production of food, it also encouraged curtailing food waste. Citizens were told to eat their leftovers and “lick their plate clean."

Mechanized warfare requires plenty of gasoline and oil. Civilians were asked to dress warmly in order to preserve oil and fuel for military transportation purposes.

Rationing gasoline and other fuels kept energy-hungry tanks and battleships running. The government urged people to cut down on anything that strained fuel resources — even taking long showers.

Scrap drives were a common way people could provide for the war effort. Contributing rags, rubber, paper or metal could help the government build airplanes and other equipment needed to fight the war.

The first nonfood item rationed was rubber, because many of Asia’s rubber plantations were under Japanese control. President Roosevelt asked citizens to help by contributing old tires, rubber raincoats, garden hoses, shoes and bathing caps.

The U.S. Treasury offered a series of war bonds citizens could purchase to invest in the country and, ideally, one’s own financial future.

Doubts about America's ability to deter and, if necessary, defeat opponents and honor its global commitments have proliferated." The report cited "political dysfunction" and "budget caps" as factors restraining the government from keeping pace with threats in what the report described as "a crisis of national security."

In February 2021, President Joe Biden said that China is the "most serious competitor" that poses challenges on the "prosperity, security, and democratic values" of the U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that previous optimistic approaches to China were flawed, and that China poses "the most significant challenge of any nation-state in the world to the United States". Blinken also agreed that Biden's predecessor, Donald Trump, "was right in taking a tougher approach to China".

So, too, at Belleau Wood in World War I and Omaha Beach in World War II and the Chosin Reservoir in Korea, the will of Americans was tested and not found wanting.

American politicians are elected from citizenry less well-educated than in generations past. The leaders of our War of Independence and the Philadelphia Convention had read the history of Rome and Greece and works by Cicero, Solon, Aristotle and Plato.

The City of San Marcos senior services team continues to bring innovative and exciting programs to the 50+ community in San Marcos.

Through their new program ¬– Connecting Seniors with Technology – 25 seniors are empowered to use technology in their daily lives to stay connected, happy and healthy.

During the pandemic, San Marcos staff recognized the technology barriers that many seniors were facing. Participants in the technology program have been given a tablet to borrow for one year, plus training to increase confidence and experience with technology, thanks to a $14,910 grant from the San Diego Seniors Community Foundation. Following the one-year tablet loan program, the devices will be available for daily check-out to seniors at the Senior Activity Center.

Last week I wrote about 9/11 and how during crisis we put our differences aside and our unified American character comes out.

Well, we just had a recall election, and our Governor was not recalled. And while it is not the same, there is some commonality. I do believe that we have, if not crisis to contend with, big challenges ahead of us. So, I think it is time we put our differences aside and let that unified American character come out.

As one wag put it – if you want to agree with an elected official 100% of the time, run for office. There is a lot of truth to that statement. I don’t agree with my elected officials all the time either. And it is OK to disagree or offer alternatives. Debate and discussion help us find good solutions. But the idea of the current cancel culture is hurting us as a community. And we need to stop it.

The recall effort was a waste of our tax dollars. Having the ability to recall is an important process. But it wasn’t designed to be used just because you disagree, that is what a periodic election is for. So let’s put this behind us and tackle the tough challenges facing us together and with respectful debate.

In the 1960s, domestic muscle cars proliferated, Charger, Camaro, GTO, Mustang, Cobra, Corvette and a host of European cars had engines rated at up to 800HP and top speeds well over 200MPH. In the 1970s and 80s inflation and the gas crunch quenched our lust for performance and fun and we became “practical.” This was the era of cheap shoddy economy cars like Pinto, Gremlin, Dart, Vega and the worst car ever built the Yugo.

The end of the U.S. war may be controversial, but taking care of those who face deadly retribution for having helped us should be a no-brainer.

"It is a life and death situation," Rep. Brad Wenstrup (R-Ohio) said last month. "It'll be a black eye on the United States if we don't do everything in our power to protect these allies."

Rep. Jason Crow (D-Colo.), a decorated retired Army Ranger who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, has been helping lead the effort to save these Afghans' lives by expediting the process for them to receive special immigrant visas (SIVs), raising the federal cap and waiving application requirements.

Matt Zeller, a U.S. Army veteran and co-chair of the advisory board of the Association of Wartime Allies, a group that works to support Afghans who worked with the U.S. military, said the departure of U.S. diplomats left a sinking feeling for his contacts who remain in Kabul.

“The sense on the ground is panic,” he said. “People describe Kabul as a scene reminiscent of the

We finally understand the balance between performance, reliability and economy and make our choices accordingly. It took us a while to get there but we are much better at judging what vehicles best fit our needs and life styles. With personal computers, we’re not quite there yet.

As with vehicle professionals, computer professionals (software developers, ITs, designers, video/audio editors and gamers etc) understand the attributes of computer functions and are able to select configurations optimized to their needs. But many non-professionals like business, home and school computer users are stuck somewhere between muscle cars and Yugos.

The final days . . . of Saigon:

Captain Gerald Berry was assigned to rescue U.S. Ambassador Graham Martin. The mission evolved into an 18-hour day of shuttling people to an armada of ships waiting in the South China Sea. And as Berry flew toward the U.S. Embassy in Saigon, he could see enemy tanks approaching the city.

"So I land behind the embassy and said, 'I'm here to get the Ambassador.' Because I'm thinking somebody told him I was coming to get him. Well then somebody else gets on the phone and said, 'Well, the Ambassador isn't coming.' I said, 'Really? I'm supposed to get him.' 'Well, no he's not.' So take a lift of these, so they loaded Vietnamese on."

In the early hours of April 30th, despite multiple flights with hundreds of evacuees and with time running out, Berry uttered three words that meant it was imperative for the U.S. diplomat to leave.

"I'm not leaving the roof until the Ambassador is on board. And out of nowhere I just, I said, 'The President sends.' Two minutes later -- all this guy wanted was an order from the President to come out.

Carlsbad Cracks Down on The Homeless

The Carlsbad City Council acted upon a proposed a slate of municipal code amendments related to homelessness and “quality of life” concerns in the city, which has seen a steady increase in complaints about the unsheltered.

“Solving the homeless problem by allowing our homeless to camp would be my last alternative,” said Peder Norby, the newest council member, who was appointed to the vacant District 1 seat last month.

The Carlsbad City Council voted unanimously to support all the ordinance amendments except the section dealing with camping.

That morning there were some strangers slinking around the building near the basement. But nobody paid much attention to them. Or maybe nobody even saw the three white men.

“This is where the explosions happened,” the man says, patting the stone wall. “Right here.”

The men planted 19 sticks of dynamite beneath the stairs. The explosion happened at 10:22 a.m. It sounded like a freight train colliding with another freight train.

There was screaming. Wailing.

Weeping. Smoke. Dust. The blast killed four beautiful black girls and injured twenty-two others.

“Youth Day,” he says again. “They killed them little girls right before Youth Day.”

It was a lifetime ago. The men responsible for this racial horror will not get their names in this column.

But the names of the four girls were Denise McNair, Cynthia Wesley, Carole Robertson, and Addie Mae Collins.

I love the name Addie Mae. She was 14 years old.

The funeral for those children was a national event. More than 8,000 showed up on 16th Street to grieve their loss. And Dr. Martin Luther King gave their eulogy. To a hellbattered Birmingham he spoke words that were gentle and humble at heart.

I can only imagine how hard it was for King, who was himself a father of four. Only one month earlier, he had delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial to 250,000 people who all had the same dream. And now this. It must have been quite a day.

The man takes me to the church steps. Together we stand upon them.

An older black man, smoking a cigarette, standing beside me.

“This is holy ground,” he says.

And he’s absolutely right. I feel it, too. I stand on these steps and feel something profound. Something so inexplicably good, and hopeful, and joyous. I also feel my eyes getting wet.

And in this horrible time of pandemics, and unrest, and depression, and hatred, the warmth from this place is like salve to me.

Because no matter how bad this world gets, and no matter how devoid of peace, you can almost hear the words from King’s eulogy, leaping from these very bricks.

San Marcos Lions Club Launches Shoe Collection Drive to Raise money for Mobile Health Units and Vision Screenings

San Marcos Lions Club is conducting a shoe drive during the months of September through October 2021 to raise funds to provide free vision screenings to anyone in need and to manage the Clubs two Mobile Health Units. San Marcos Lions Club will earn funds based on the total weight of the shoes collected as Funds2Orgs will purchase all the donated footwear. Those dollars will benefit North County residents in need of vision services. Anyone can help by donating gently worn, used or new shoes and dropping them off on October 2 at the Lions booth in the parking lot of The Computer Factory, 845 W. San Marcos Blvd at the corner of Bent Avenue and San Marcos Blvd, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Shoes may also be dropped off at The Computer Factory weekdays from 9 A.M to 6 P.M. or at the State Farm Insurance office at 574 E. Mission Rd, Suite B, San Marcos, CA 92069, Monday through Friday, between the hours of 9 am to Noon, and 2 pm to 4 pm.
