My wife calls me a ‘work in progress.’

While I have a sense of humor, that term is just a bit demeaning. It’s as though she were a master artist with a painting that just doesn’t seem to want to cooperate. But all great works of art have to go through some changes and revision before they make it to the Louvre or end up on a t-shirt. Back in 1995 when my wife said “I do,” she only had a hazy inkling of what she was taking on. But like a dedicated sculptor working with a block of marble, my wife has been trying, with little apparent success, to make me perfect. She seemed to see me as a ‘David’ with Dockers and Izod shirts. She has managed to smooth out some of my rough edges. After

more than two decades of training I can now hang up the bath towels and even make the bed. For most of my pre-married life I didn’t even know that towel racks existed. That's what the floor was for; right next to all my dirty clothes. When I was a carefree bachelor, I was the same kind of guy who thought that flushing a toilet counted as cleaning it. I consider myself an enlightened husband of the 21st Century. By that I mean I don’t take my role as the supposed ‘head of the household’ too seriously. I actually help my wife around the house. In addi-

tion to the usual chores of taking out the garbage and fixing whatever needs repairing, I often do the housework and cleaning.

Now, before you male readers start foaming at the mouth hear me out. My wife does an awful lot that has traditionally fallen under the aegis of the husband. She does the driving, shopping, cooking, laundry, some of the cleaning and all the bills. This is because I am blind, so some of these jobs are a bit beyond me. When she brings home the groceries, I put them away. When she cooks dinner I do the dishes.

That’s a fair and equitable division of labor. I am the sole breadwinner of the house, but she’s a genius with handling money. All that being said, I have to admit we have come to a mutually agreeable arrangement. But there is one major pothole in the road to domestic paradise.

What is it with women and laundry? They hate doing it but won’t let anyone else near it. I don’t understand that kind of logic. It’s like someone who hates kids and driving becoming a school bus driver. I have offered many times to help her with it. “Honey, I can take care of that for you,” I say with eager sincerity. But it’s no use. She merely pats me on the head and tells me to go and play with my tools or fix something. So I gave the matter a lot of thought. She must think there is a laundry event horizon a sort of black hole where all the clothes I touch will either be lost or damaged beyond repair. After a few beers and some serious digging into my memory I began to recall some things from my misspent youth. I wasn’t blind back then but that would have probably been a blessing. When I was a bachelor, back in the halcyon days of yore, I did my own laundry.

The IRS returned a tax return to a man in New Jersey after he apparently answered one of the questions incorrectly. In response to question 23: "Do you have anyone dependent on you?", the man wrote: "2.1 million illegal immigrants, 1.1 million crack-heads, 4.4 million unemployable scroungers, 80,000 criminals in over 85 prisons, plus 650 idiots in Washington, and the entire group that call themselves politicians".

On the returned form, someone at the IRS had attached a Post-it Note beside the question with an arrow and the words: "Your response to question 23 is unacceptable." Mom lived more than 500 miles away and shipping was too expensive. I had the usual collection of men’s clothes like jeans, t-shirts, underwear, socks, and a few nice clothes. I had a few old things, you know, the flannel plaid shirt that you’ve had since college that just feels good and has some sentimental value but that no self-respecting girlfriend would ever allow you to be seen in. Women just don’t seem to understand things like that.

Every two weeks or so, depending on how often I wore the same underpants and socks, I would end up with a pile of dirty clothes encroaching on the kitchen floor. That meant the bedroom, bathroom, living room and hallway floor were full. I could no longer ignore it. At that point all I usually had left to wear was a ratty old ‘McGovern ‘1972’ shirt and a pair of hand-knitted violet socks. I had an unmarried friend who advised me to just throw away my clothes as they got dirty and when the closet and dresser were empty, go and buy a new set of clothes. He said he saved lots of money on detergent and fabric softener. He even started a secondhand pin business from the ones he pulled out of all his new shirts. I have to admit he always looked great but for some reason he never married. So when the dirty laundry reached a point where it was eligible for its own zip code, I would go find an abandoned shopping cart in the the air?" He told me to run off a cliff.

I went to a massage parlor. It was selfservice. It's tough to stay married. My wife kisses the dog on the lips, yet she won't drink from my glass!

Last night my wife met me at the front door. She was wearing a sexy negligee. The only trouble was, she was coming home.

A girl phoned me and said, 'Come on over. There's nobody home.' I went over. Nobody was home! A hooker once told me she had a headache.

I was making love to this girl and she started crying. I said, 'Are you going to hate yourself in the morning?' She said, 'No, I hate myself now.'

My wife is such a bad cook, if we leave dental floss in the kitchen the roaches hang themselves. I'm so ugly I stuck my head out the window and got arrested for mooning.

The other day I came home early and a guy was jogging, naked. I asked him, 'Why?' He said, 'Because you came home early.' My wife's such a bad cook, the dog begs for Alka-Seltzer. I know I'm not sexy. When I put my underwear on I can hear the Fruit-ofthe-Loom guys giggling. My wife is such a bad cook. In my house we pray after the meal.

My wife likes to talk to me during sex;

“I think that’s the water level indicator.” “Oh. Will more water cost more money?”

“No. Just put it on ‘High’ and go for it.” “Cool. Then what?”

“Put in the clothes and detergent. Close the lid and leave. In an hour, your clothes will be clean.”

“Cool. Mom’s always bitching that it’s a lot of work. What’s the big deal? Burp.” “Beats me. Burp. ”

Notice that there was no mention of separating the colors from the whites or using cold water on delicates. We were totally clueless. last night she called me from a hotel.

My family was so poor that if I hadn't been born a boy, I wouldn't have had anything to play with.

It's been a rough day. I got up this morning and put a shirt on and a button fell off. I picked up my briefcase, and the handle came off. I'm afraid to go to the bathroom. I was such an ugly kid! When I played in the sandbox, the cat kept covering me up.

I could tell my parents hated me. My bath toys were a toaster and radio.

I was such an ugly baby that my mother never breast fed me. She told me that she only liked me as a friend. I'm so ugly my father carried around a picture of the kid that came with his wallet. When I was born, the doctor came into the waiting room and said to my father, "I'm sorry. We did everything we could, but he pulled through anyway." I'm so ugly my mother had morning sickness AFTER I was born

I remember the time that I was kidnapped and they sent a piece of my finger to my father. He said he wanted more proof. Once when I was lost I saw a policeman, & asked him to help me find my parents. I said to him, "Do you think we'll ever find them?" He said, "I don't know kid. There's so many places they can hide."

My wife made me join a bridge club. I jump off next Tuesday.

I put the entire mass, colors, delicates, whites and all, into one washing machine. I had to stand on them to get them to go in. One time I ran the washer and when I came back the clothes were totally dry. I’ve never figured that one out.

Then I dumped a half a box of detergent into it. If I didn’t have any Tide I used dishwashing liquid. Once I even used a cheese grater to grate a cake of Ivory Soap over the washer. It worked, but it rained all the next week and I left foamy bubbles in my wake. That may sound insane to you but in my defense, I never tried to use shampoo. That would just be stupid.

After putting in the quarters it was time to turn it on. With the same casual aplomb shown by a ten-year old who suddenly finds himself unsupervised in the control center of a nuclear power plant, I pushed buttons and turned knobs at random. I figured that just like an infinite number of monkeys could one day write the complete works of Shakespeare, I would some day have a perfectly washed set of clothes. The results were usually disappointing and I often thought about hiring the monkeys.

I went to see my doctor. "Doctor, every morning when I get up and I look in the mirror I feel like throwing up. What's wrong with me?" He said: "Nothing, your eyesight is perfect." I went to the doctor because I'd swallowed a bottle of sleeping pills. My doctor told me to have a few drinks and get some rest. One year they wanted to make me a poster boy -- for birth control.

San Marcos Lions Club Screening Children’s Paradise Pre-School Children - The San Marcos Lions Club will do vision screening for approximately 100 pre-school children in four locations August 28-31, as part of their KidSight USA program. Screening locations and dates already completed include Oceanside and East Vista. Those areas left to be done are South Vista (today) August 30th from 9-11am; and Escondido (Friday) August 31st from 9-11am. the sodden mass out and shoved them into the dryer, using the same careful system of not separating the colors from the rest and turned it on. I was in my thirties before I heard about fabric softener sheets, so when I opened the door and grabbed a sleeve or cuff, the entire mass came out as one giant staticcharged snarl. I spent the next hour pulling them apart like untangling Christmas tree lights. You’d never believe how sleeves and socks can tie themselves into complex knots. My hair stood on end for hours.

Well that was in the past. Somehow I managed to survive bachelorhood and even convinced (some say tricked) a wonderful girl to marry me. She had the idea that I was trainable and not a totally lost cause. I can’t help but wonder how often she has regretted that rash assessment. As the years passed I learned how to handle simple tasks like putting the toilet paper on the roll with the loose end on the outside, and to run the water when using the sink disposal. But for some reason, even with my mastery of such feats, she still refused to let me do the laundry. Part of the problem was the loss of my eyesight. I had to find new ways

If I was making dinner and was going to spray nonstick coating into the pan, I had to be sure I wasn’t spraying extra hold hair spray instead. Those are just the kind of things that can happen when you’re a blind guy.

But the death knell of my aspirations to help her with the laundry was sounded the day after the famous ‘Red Blouse Incident.’ This is still legend among our friends and family.

She was out of town for a week and had made sure every single article of clothing in the whole house was clean and folded. She felt safe in leaving, knowing that I’d have plenty to wear. But she hadn’t reckoned on me having a party with my buddies. A party with beer and wine and lots of messy food. Nachos, guacamole, frijoles, salsa and other things that guys love but should not be allowed to handle unsupervised. Suffice to say I had to change my clothes twice in one day. Then I went to a ball game and spilled cheap beer on myself during a grand slam home run. I went through the clothes amazingly fast. So, to be helpful and to prove to her that I could handle it, I did my own laundry. If the reader is suddenly feeling a cold chill running up their spine, run with it.

I put the white underwear and socks into the washer with five cups of bleach. Yes I now know it was too much, but what harm could too much bleach do to whites? None.

But the new red silk blouse my wife had just bought was another matter. Unbeknownst to me, she had left it behind for altering on top of the washer. So when I began piling things in, the blouse, which had a Neiman-Marcus label on it, went in to its doom.

I think I recall a tiny voice that sounded like Gloria Vanderbilt shrieking in fear as I poured in the bleach, but I ignored it.

It's not hard to guess what happened. It was like one of those old 1950s Disney movies where the family pet (cat, dog, seal, kangaroo, wombat, platypus) gets into total mayhem while catching the crooks. Well I didn’t catch any crooks but boy did I cause mayhem.

The shrieking that my wife gave me when she came home and found the blouse considerably less red than it had been before she left sounded like a cross between Circe calling Ulysses to his doom and a female T-Rex having a conniption fit. But I would rather have faced the T-Rex. The blouse was ruined.

To make matters worse, all the whites were now a nice shade of pink. You know what she did? Instead of patting me on the head and saying ‘It’s okay Honey I know

you didn’t mean it. Let’s go and buy some new underwear for you,’ she made me wear pink underpants, socks and undershirts for a month. For you women readers, please stop agreeing with her. That was one embarrassing month. The weird part is that all my female co-workers seemed a lot nicer to me and even wanted to go shopping with me. So I suppose in my case she’s justified in putting barbed wire around the washer and dryer, but the Braille signs warning of ‘Absolutely No Unauthorized Husbands Beyond This Point’ are a bit much.

One nice thing that has come out of this matter is that as a ‘work in progress,’ I have lots of wiggle room. I can screw something up and simply say “Well, at least I’m learning, dear.” I always say this with an engaging smile. Not a bad deal. I figure I’ve got at least ten years before I have to be perfect. Michelangelo took years to do the Sistine Chapel; I’m just taking a bit longer. But I can pretty much guarantee the final result will be well worth the wait. •••• About the Author:

The Paper • Page 4 • August 30, 2018 ESCONDIDO POLICE DEPARTMENT – HOMICIDE UPDATE

The victims in last Thursday’s homicides have been identified as Veronica Soto Ortega (30) and Ana Gabriela Soto (26), both residents of Escondido. The victims were sisters and resided together at the address in the 500 block of W. 11th Ave, in the City of Escondido. Veronica’s body was located at the residence. Ana’s body was located inside the SUV in the area of Kauana Loa Dr and Country Club Dr. The manner and cause of deaths for both sisters are still under investigation by the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office. The suspect arrested on 08-09-18, Juan Carlos Ortega (33), was determined to be the estranged husband of Veronica Soto Ortega. As previously stated, potential means and motives, as well as, the events leading up to the deaths are still under investigation.

Vista Shooting Believed Gang Related

Deputies are treating it as a probable gang-related shooting.

The city leases slips on the docks to boaters, including some where the owners live aboard their vessels. There’s a long wait, sometimes a year or more, to get one.

Early Saturday morning, about 1:20am, Sheriff’s deputies found a 37-year-old man with two gunshot wounds from a small caliber weapon at Townsite Drive near Hillside Terrace.

The man was taken to Palomar Hospital, where his injuries were determined not to be life-threatening.

No description of a shooter was available, but a dark, newer-model Dodge Durango is believed to be associated with the attack, according to deputies. Oceanside Boat Dock Costs Climbing

The harbor has about 20 concrete docks, all built in the 1980s, and most, if not all, of them will need to be replaced in about 15 years. The total cost could be as high as $100 million.

Slip rentals are the largest single source of income for the harbor, bringing the city a total of $5.2 million in revenue during fiscal 2017’18. Oceanside’s harbor was built in the early 1960s at a cost of about $7 million. It opened with 520 boat slips, and today has 950.

Thinking Out Loud . . .

We are early in the election season but it is rapidly approaching.

We have some endorsements and an observation or two to share with our readers.

1. We think JIm Desmond has done an outsanding job as Mayor for the city of San Marcos and we are endorsing him for his run at the District 5 Supervisor’s position.

We are confident Jim will do the same fine job for his county constituents as he has for his San Marcos consituency.

2. We also endorse Rebecca Jones for Mayor of San Marcos. Like Jim Desmond, she has been a dedicated, hard worker for the city of San Marcos as a council member and will carry those attributes over to the Mayor’s p

position.

3. We are endorseing Mike Sanella for the Council member representing the Destrict 2 area for San Marcos. We have followed Mike during his tenure on the Vallecitos Water Board (and we endorsed him for that position as well) and have been impressed with his thoroughness, is follow-through, and his commitment. We will have other endorsements coming for different communities and offices.

One endorsement we will not be making is in the 50th Congressional District. We cannot and will not endorse Duncan Hunter for that office but neither will we endorse his opponent, Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar.

Our observation is that the GOP and its voters will rally behind Hunter in order to get him elected and hold the Republican seat. We then see the GOP pressuring Hunter to resign his seat and then have the opportunity of placing another electable candidate from GOP ranks to be elected during the subsequent special election.

Yes, it’s strategic politics but that’s how the game is played and the GOP does not want to lose the congressional seat to a Democrat. The reason we are not endorsing Hunter for the seat is we don’t think he deserves it. In our judgment he abused his power and betrayed a trust. At the same time, we cannot endorse his opponent as there are too many Democrats in elected offices already.

Mike Sannella for Councilmember - District 2 We’ll be taking a look at other elective offices within the next few weeks. We likely will have other endorsements.

We’re a bit early on the above endorsements but that’s because we know the candidates so well and believe they have all contributed in a major way to their communities and have earned the endorsements. Start of a trend? Could be. I checked them out and I liked what I saw.

Jaguar Land Rover is opening a factory restoration sales and service center in Savanah, GA. JLR operates two similar facilities, one in the United Kingdom and one in Germany. Mercedes Benz and Porsche operate similar facilities, catering to owners of classic cars. Private capital has a number of these facilities. No other car comes close to being as favored as this week’s mystery car for being an excellent make over hot rod. It’s a car you can slick up some more and drop in a big V-8 to make it really fly, plus draw admiring looks and a lust for car. I always wanted one of these. Built in 1932, it replaced the Model A . Nothing turned me on like the five window coupe version of these. It carried the nickname of “The Deuce Coupe”. To top it all off they were available with a flat head V-8 when they came to market. Hot rodders loved this car and they still do. All 1932s came with black fenders and wire wheels. This car was the “pinnacle peak”. You probably wanted one of these, also.

This is Avocado Country

Avocados are one of California’s signature crops. Though only five California counties have significant acreage, the state produces over 90% of the nation’s avocados.

Hard to grow, sensitive to extreme weather and to a variety of pests, acreage is largely limited to San Diego, Riverside, Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties, with San Diego County historically producing the most.

Since thriving, well irrigated avocado groves and row crops can help hinder the spread of wildfires, I am currently working in the Legislature on changes to state regulations, including CEQA streamlining, to facilitate the delivery of more irrigation water to groves, allowing them to remain green and productive. Locally, many growers have been forced to abandon their groves, becoming unsightly stumps and fire tinder due to escalating water costs. Replanting groves at higher densities to save water and increase production can cost thousands of dollars per acre, which the smaller growers can’t afford. As a result, productive avocado acreage is decreasing, including high fire risk areas like Fallbrook,

Bonsall, Temecula and Valley Center.

Water salinity is another problem. We are importing more water from the Colorado River, which has a higher salt content than northern-sourced water. Since too much salt harms trees, Colorado River water is blended with less salty northern water at Lake Skinner, but northern water supplies to our region can be severely limited during droughts. Bipartisan legislation (Adrin Nazarian D – Sherman Oaks and I) to bring reclaimed water to farmlands to allow reverse osmosis water to reduce salinity for groves is a continuing effort, along with increasing surface water storage in our region.

Despite these challenges, the nation’s avocado appetite is growing. I will do everything I can to ensure that our region and state continue to be major suppliers of this unique fruit.

‘Beau James’ – the ‘Gentleman’ Mayor of NYC

James John Walker, born June 19, 1881, was known colloquially as “Beau James,” was mayor of New York City from 1926 to 1932. A flamboyant politician, he was a liberal Democrat and part of the powerful Tammany Hall machine.

Walker at first decided that he would rather write songs and be involved in the music industry but he eventually entered politics in 1909 and subsequently passed the bar exam in 1912. He wrote the popular song, “Will You Love Me in December.”

As mayor, Walker led his administration in challenging Prohibition by replacing the police commissioner with an inexperienced former state banking commissioner. The new police commissioner immediately dissolved the Special Service Squad. Since Walker did not feel drinking was a crime, he discouraged the police from enforcing Prohibition law or taking an active role unless it was to curb excessive violations or would prove to be newsworthy. His affairs with "chorus girls" were widely known, and he left his wife, Janet, for showgirl Betty Compton.

Increasing social unrest led to investigations into corruption within his administration, and he was eventually forced to testify before the investigative committee of Judge Samuel Seabury, the Seabury Commission. Walker caused his own downfall by accepting large sums of money from businessmen looking for municipal contracts.

With New York City appearing as a symbol of corruption under Mayor Walker, Then Gov. Franklin D. Roosevelt knew he had to do something about Walker and his administration. Knowing the State constitution could allow an elected mayor to be removed from office, Roosevelt felt compelled to do so but risked losing Tammany Hall's support for the Democratic nomination. On the other hand, if Roosevelt did nothing or let Walker off, the national newspapers would consider him weak.

Facing pressure from Roosevelt, Walker eluded questions about his personal bank accounts, stating instead the amounts he received were "beneficences" and not bribes. He delayed any personal appearances until after Roosevelt's nomination was secured. It was then that the embattled mayor could fight no longer. Months from his national election, Roosevelt decided that he must remove Walker from office. Walker agreed and resigned on Sept. 1, 1932.

Walker's reputation as a flamboyant man-about-town made him a hero to many working-class voters; he was often seen at legitimate theaters and illegitimate speakeasies. His reputation for tolerating corruption made him suspect to middle-class and moralistic voters.

Gov. Al Smith was a staunch supporter since Walker backed many social and cultural issues that were considered politically important. Issues such as social welfare, legalization of boxing, repeal of blue laws against Sunday baseball games, condemning the Ku Klux Klan, and especially their mutual opposition to Prohibition. Walker had to be willing to change some of his more unscrupulous ways or at least provide a cover for his indiscretions. Instead of ending his visits to the speakeasies and his friendships with chorus girls, he took those activities behind the closed doors of a penthouse funded by Tammany Hall.

In his initial years as mayor, Walker saw the city prosper and many public works projects gain traction. In his first year, Walker created the Department of Sanitation, unified New York's public hospitals, improved many parks and playgrounds, and guided the Board of Transportation to enter into contract for the construction of an expanded subway system (the Independent Subway System or IND). He even managed to maintain the five-cent subway fare despite a threatened strike by the work-

He went on a grand tour of Europe with Compton, his Ziegfeld girl. He announced on Nov. 12, 1932, while aboard the SS Conte Grande, that had "no desire or intention of ever holding public office again." Walker stayed in Europe until the danger of criminal prosecution appeared remote. There, he married Compton.

After his return to the United States, Walker acted as head of Majestic Records, which included such popular performing artists as Louis Prima and Bud Freeman. He died at the age of 65 of a brain hemorrhage on Nov. 18, 1946. A romanticized version of Walker's tenure as mayor was presented in the 1957 film “Beau James,” starring Bob Hope. This was a somewhat accurate depiction of Walker, who during his time as mayor had become a symbol of the jazz age romanticism The film was based on a biography of Walker, also titled “Beau James,” written by Gene Fowler.

A book also was the basis of “Jimmy,” a stage musical about Walker that had a brief Broadway run from October 1969 to January 1970. The show starred Frank Gorshin as Walker and Anita Gillette as Betty Compton. There also is a song about Walker in the stage musical “Fiorello!,” titled “Gentleman Jimmy Walker.” Anyway you look at him, Gentleman Jim was one of New York City’s most colorful characters.

Chatham Brothers Barrel Yard

The California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) is embarking on a second five-year review of a toxic waste site located at 2257 Bernardo Avenue in South Escondido. The property is commonly referred to as the Chatham property.

The Chatham Brother Barrel Yard was a waste oil and solvent recycling storage facility. Drums full of chemicals were stored there and leaked into soil and groundwater.

An interesting article I recently read in THE WEEK, a weekly publication, spoke of a poll taken of Yale University students asking if they were happy? Over fifty percent said they weren’t. The students were from some of the richest and most educated families in America. Yet, they were not happy. This leads me to ask the readers of The Paper “Are you happy?” Perhaps we ought to define the word happy. It is more than satisfaction. One can be satisfied with an ice-cream cone, but when it is gone the satisfaction disappears. So let me give you a definition of happiness. It is a state of being, a continuous flow of contentment, a deep sense of well being, a feeling that all is well, and an acceptance

This condition of the majority is not unique to this generation. I suspect it has always been a part of our humanity. Jesus, in New Testament times, speaks to these issues by asking, “Why are you so anxious?” Because this article is being contributed by one who tries to find help in the Bible for these very issues, I would like to share what Jesus says about happiness. The Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5 has a series of actions that begin with the words, “Blessed, or happy, are you when----“. His proposals are the opposite of what the world says is happiness. The Yale students were encouraged to take a college course on how to be happy. It became the most popular course of the year. It does show how desperate people are to find happiness. Hopefully, one would not stop with a college 101 course on happiness, but also study the sermon of Jesus for a deeper experience of happiness.

San Marcos • Mayor Jim Desmond - Local active adults benefit from City and CSUSM collabor ation

The City of San Marcos is home to about 25,000 residents 50 years and older who are approaching or are in retirement. But that doesn’t mean they’re ready to slow down.

In fact, the San Marcos Senior Activity Center is buzzing. It serves about 7,000 senior residents per month, largely thanks to the dozens of volunteers who do things like work the front desk, help in the computer lab and lead activities.

A collaboration with California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) will help the City attract more of those

critical volunteers. They recently joined forces to launch Democracy in Action, a program that lets students tackle city issues. Unlike an internship, they are not given direction—but instead, make research-based recommendations, more like a consultant. About 30 students developed strategies to entice more volunteers, including designing marketing materials, creating an orientation process and finding missed recruitment opportunities. 5. An aide for a cabinet member once called and asked if he could rent a car in Dallas .. I pulled up the reservation and noticed he had only a 1-hour layover in Dallas ... When I asked him why he wanted to rent a car, he said, ''I heard Dallas was a big airport, and we will need a car to drive between gates to save time.'' (Aghhhh) 6. An Illinois Congresswoman called last week. She needed to know how it was possible that her flight from Detroit left at 8:30 a.m., and got to Chicago at 8:33 a.m. I explained that Michigan was an hour ahead of Illinois , but she couldn't understand the concept of time zones. Finally, I told her the plane went fast, and she bought that.

7. A New York lawmaker called and asked, ''Do airlines put your physical description on your bag so they know whose luggage belongs to whom?'' I said, 'No, why do you ask?' He replied, ''Well, when I checked in with the airline, they put a tag on my

luggage that said (FAT), and I'm overweight. I think that's very rude!''

After putting him on hold for a minute, while I looked into it. (I was dying laughing). I came back and explained the city code for Fresno , Ca. is (FAT Fresno Air Terminal), and the airline was just putting a destination tag on his luggage.. 8. A Senator John Kerry aide called to inquire about a trip package to Hawaii . After going over all the cost info, she asked, ''Would it be cheaper to fly to California and then take the train to Hawaii ?'' 9. I just got off the phone with a freshman Congressman from Ala. who asked, ''How do I know which plane to get on?''

I asked him what exactly he meant, to which he replied, ''I was told my flight number is 823, but none of these planes have numbers on them.'' 10 Senator Dianne Feinstein called and said, ''I need to fly to Pepsi-Cola , Florida . Do I have to get on one of those little computer planes?''

I asked if she meant fly to Pensacola and fly on a commuter plane. She said, ''Yeah, whatever, smarty!''

11 Mary Landrieu, La. Senator, called and had a question about the documents she needed in order to fly to China . After a lengthy discussion about passports, I reminded her that she needed a visa. "Oh, no I don't. I've been to China many times and never had to have one of those.''

I double checked and sure enough, her stay required a visa. When I told her this she said, ''Look, I've been to China four times and every time they have accepted my American Express!'' 12 A New Jersey Congressman called to make reservations, ''I want to go from Chicago to Rhino, New York .''

Oceanside • Mayor Peter Weiss The City of Oceanside is dependent on the Federal Government's Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) for all of its beach nourishment efforts. Unfortunately, this year, the Corps announced it would delay its annual maintenance dredging of Oceanside Harbor, typically expected to begin in spring, which results in more sand for City beaches. The certification used in previous dredging operations expired, and a new permit was not obtained by the Corps in time to conduct dredging in May. I was at a loss for words. Finally, I said, ''Are you sure that's the name of the town?'' 'Yes, what flights do you have?'' replied the man.

After some searching, I came back with, ''I'm sorry, sir, I've looked up every airport code in the country and can't find a rhino anywhere."

''The man retorted, ''Oh, don't be silly! Everyone knows where it is. Check your map!'' So I scoured a map of the state of New York and finally offered, ''You don't mean Buffalo , do you?'' The reply? ''Whatever! I knew it was a big animal.''

The Corps has been monitoring the Harbor entrance channel depths to determine if dredging will be necessary in the fall, or if it can wait until spring 2019. The City has requested that the Corps dredge and place sand on beaches both in fall 2018 and spring 2019. Meanwhile, the City’s Public Works Department is monitoring construction sites that may have sand, as the City has a permit which allows “beach quality” sand to be placed on City beaches when opportunities arise. then why aren't people from Holland called Holes? ••••• If it’s true we are here to help others then are the others for? ••••• A Baptist pastor was presenting a children's sermon. During the sermon, he asked the children if they knew what the resurrection was. Now, asking questions during children's sermons is crucial, but at the same time, there can be unexpected results. A little boy raised his hand…

The pastor called on him and the little boy said, "I know that if you have a resurrection that lasts more than four hours you are supposed to call the doctor."

It took more than ten minutes for the congregation to settle down enough for the service to continue. ••••• Alcoholic Anonymous has been very successful with it's 12 step program, and has spawned quite a few similar organizations. In Texas, there is a Line Dancers Anonymous, for folks addicted to line dancing. It's a 'Two Step' program.

When things go wrong

Slow, won’t boot, won’t connect, makes weird noises etc, etc. Sometimes PCs don’t do what you want them to. Over the years, the hardware in our electronic devices has become cheaper, lighter, more energy efficient and more reliable even while the functionality and complexity of these gadgets have increased exponentially. Phones, tablets, TV sets, radios, CD/DVD player/recorders, notebooks, tablets, desktop computers, air conditioners, cars and pretty much anything that uses electricity has been part of this evolution.

As compared to past generations, PCs today use less energy, generate less heat and have far fewer moving parts. They run cooler and quieter. Cell phones, tablets and some notebooks have no moving parts. With no moving parts to wear out and low voltage components to keep heat from degrading the circuitry, these devices should last forever. Notebook and desktop reliability has benefitted from smaller and fewer moving parts and reduced heat loads. Hard drives, power supplies, CD/DVDs and cooling fans have always been the most failure prone components because they are mechanical and subject to wear. Motherboards have no moving parts but they are large and can be subject to damage from heat stress. They also have mechanical interface connections like video, LAN and, USB that can weaken with use. CPUs and RAM are pretty much bulletproof and that’s a good thing because they are, with the exception of the motherboard, typically the most expensive components in your PC. Replacing or upgrading notebook and desktop components like RAM, hard drives, power supplies and fans is not too expensive and usually worth doing. Replacing motherboards or CPUs is usually not cost effective. The majority of problems that we see at The Computer Factory are not component related at all. They are problems cause by software.

Corrupt or infected OS (operating systems), applications and drivers are the most frequent sources of PC misbehavior. Sometimes these are minor problems that can be fixed while you wait. If the problem involves the OS or malware infections you will need to leave your PC with us for one or two days. Fixing the OS is usually not terribly expensive, $100 and $150 depending on whether or not we are required to back up and reinstall customer files (pictures, documents etc.) After having the OS reinstalled you may have a problem with the passwords for applications you frequently use like the Wi-fi, Email or Face Book. Your computer gives you the option to store frequently used access passwords so that you don’t need to enter

them when you access your application (bank, trading program, game site etc.) After reinstalling the OS, those passwords are no longer remembered by your PC. You must put them back. If you have them written somewhere you have no problem. If you don’t and cannot remember them, then you do have a problem. You will need to contact each of these service providers and prove that you are you. Usually that requires remembering some piece of personal information that you gave them when you set up your account so let’s hope you remember the name of your great Grandpa Henry’s mother in law’s first dog or you’re in big trouble.
