On the set of history’s most famous television talk show, Johnny Carson was busy chatting it up with one of his favorite comedians, Buddy Hackett. Hackett was a familiar guest on “The Tonight Show,” primarily because he registered exceedingly high with the show’s millions of viewers. And on this particular night, Buddy Hackett showed no mercy in fracturing the funny bones of NBC’s live studio audience, including Carson’s. “A lady goes to the dentist and the dentist looks in her mouth and says, ‘I’m gonna have to pull that tooth out.’ And the lady says, ‘Are you kidding?! I’d rather have a baby!’ And the dentist says, “Well make up your mind ‘cause I have to adjust the chair.’” Jokes can be more complex than what we casually see on the surface. That is, they are used in a variety of ways, and their intended purpose is not always as simple as just making people laugh. For example, in the case of comedian Joan Rivers, some jokes were used as therapy to help her struggle through personal tragedy. To help heal the wounds of her personal life. When her husband committed suicide in 1987, his death left her devastated. In her own words, she explains how jokes saved her sanity. “I dealt with my husband’s suicide immediately on stage. Immediately. ‘Cause I knew that the audience knew and I knew there was a tension there when I walked on, and my first line – for a long time – was, ‘My husband just killed himself and he left in his will that I have to visit him every day. So I had him cremated and I’ve sprinkled him through Neiman Marcus – and I haven’t missed a day.” The audience laughed, and Joan laughed. But inside, she knew that what was best for her is not always the same recipe for everybody. In this case, Joan Rivers did what was best for her own life. And it worked.

Occasionally, a humorous narrative may provoke elements of truth. Such as the dread of going to the DMV and surviving the infamous long lines.

It is most interesting that a funny joke in America may produce, at best, a mild yawn in China or, worse, a ‘thumbs down,’ in another culture. What ‘plays’ in America, may not fare well in distant lands. Humor researcher, Richard Wiseman, reports that, “There seems to be social, cultural, national, age and gender differ-

ences in what we find funny.”

Seems Americans, in particular, enjoy jokes which contain elements of (1) Insult, or (2) Hints of threat. For example, from the perspective of insults, you have this popular anecdote:

Texan: “Where are you from?” Professor: “I’m from a place where we do not end sentences with prepositions.” Texan: “Okay – where are you from, jackass?”

In regards to vague hints of threat (category #2 above), there is this popular American narrative: “Two hunters are out in the woods when one of them collapses. He doesn’t seem to be breathing and his eyes are completely shut. The other hunter grabs his cell phone and calls 911. The dispatcher asks the nature of the emergency. The panicked-struck hunter hollers into his cell phone: ‘My friend is dead! Help me, please!’ The emergency operator answers, ‘Calm down. First off, let’s make sure he’s dead.’ There is a silence, then, a shot is heard in the background. The hunter gets back on his cell phone and says, ‘Okay, now what?’”

Anthropologists find it intriguing that the human psyche processes

comedy in vastly different ways, continent to continent. Researchers found it fascinating that Europeans, for example, particularly enjoy jokes that seem absurd, or surreal (surreal is defined as: unreal, bizarre, weird, or unearthly). The following serves as an example of a popular European joke: “A German Shepherd goes into a telegraph office to send off a telegram. The German Shepherd takes a blank telegram form and writes, ‘Woof. Woof. Woof. Woof. Woof. Woof. Woof. Woof. Woof.’ The clerk looks at the form and tells the dog, ‘There are only nine words here. You can add another ‘Woof’ for the same price.’ The dog replies, ‘But, that would make no sense at all.’”

It is an intriguing entry into human psychology as to what chemical changes in the human brain occurs when we laugh. Hard science confirms that laughter triggers the release of “endorphins,” in the human body. This finding is significant in that these endorphins appear to contain bountiful health benefits. Health benefits that may improve the quality of human life. Dr. Robert R. Provine, professor of psychology and neuroscience at the University of Maryland, and

author of “Laughter: A Scientific Investigation,” agrees strongly with the world’s scientific community that this unknown factor needs to be re-discovered: “The definitive research into the potential health benefits of laughter just hasn’t been done yet.”

People who laugh a lot are the beneficiaries, healthwise. The chemical release of endorphins (produced by laughing) is now being examined more enthusiastically than ever before, as a viable treatment of an assortment of physical and mental ailments, including anxiety.

Lab test results from the world’s foremost authorities on the human body have yielded a most shocking discovery of just how important laughing can have on human physiology. Consider the following discoveries: (1) Laughing Relaxes the Entire Body. A good, hearty laugh relieves physical tension and stress and actually leaves your body muscles relaxed for up to 45 minutes afterward! (2) Laughter Boosts the Human Immune System. Laughter decreases stress-producing hormones and increases immune cells at the same time, all of which produces infection-fighting

antibodies, thus strengthening your resistance against disease! (3) Laughter Triggers the Release of Endorphins. Endorphins are the human body’s natural feel-good chemicals. Endorphins promote an overall sense of well-being and can even temporarily relieve pain. (4) Laughter Protects the Heart. Laughing improves the function of blood vessels and increases blood flow, which can help protect you against a heart attack and other related cardiovascular problems. (5) Laughing Stimulates Many Human Organs. Hearty laughter enhances your intake of oxygenrich air, stimulates your heart, lungs, and muscles, and increases the endorphins that are released by your brain.

Surprisingly, different types of humor, or jokes, impact us in a variety of ways. Surreal humor (defined earlier in this article) seems to stimulate the physical brain, as well as the intangible mind in a most unique way. Primarily because it is a type of humor where “Emotions and reasons commingle in the pre-frontal cortex which leads to decision making,” researchers say. In plain language, surreal humor is not only funny to the human mind, but it sometimes forces the brain to perceive and sort-out illogical reasoning. Comedian, Steven Wright, gives a classic example of surreal humor: “I bought a self-learning record to

Give Us This Day Our Daily Chuckle This week, a compendium of wit, wisdom and neat stuff you can tell at parties. Enjoy! Dinner with Friends

An elderly lady was invited to an old friend’s home for dinner one evening. She was impressed by the way her lady friend preceded every request to her husband with endearing terms such as: Honey, My Love, Darling, Sweetheart, etc. The couple had been married almost 70 years and, clearly, they were still very much in love.

While the husband was in the living room, her lady friend leaned over to her hostess to say, 'I think it's wonderful that, after all these years, you still call your husband all those loving names.'

learn Spanish. I turned it on and went to sleep; the record got stuck. The next day I could only stutter in Spanish.”

Audiences don’t realize it, but Steven Wright’s humor tickles the funny bone as well as the more sophisticated thinking that occurs in the regions of the brain known as the hypothalamus and cerebral cortex. “I’ve written several children’s books . . . not on purpose,” Wright quips with perfect deadpan expression. “We lived in a house that ran on static electricity. If we wanted to cook something, we had to take a sweater off real quick. If we wanted to run a blender we had to rub balloons on our heads.” Wright often reflects on human behavior, and spoofs at just how regimented our society is, and then he has fun with it, as an outsider looking in, which allows us to see life through humorous lenses: “One night a jet flew a little bit too close to my house. I was walking from the living room to the kitchen, and the stewardess told me to sit down.”

Steven Wright describes his brand of humor as “abstract.” And laughing along with him, one feels as though the world may actually be more crazy than Wright’s non sequitur jokes. As Wright, himself, points out, “They’re just jokes, but underneath that, they’re based on ‘the world is crazy.’” Like “A Mad Hatter Tea Party” in Alice in Wonderland, nothing seems to be real with Steven Wright driving the bus: “I got a new shadow. I

The elderly lady hung her head, 'I have to tell you the truth,' she said, 'his name slipped my mind about 10 years ago, and I'm scared to death to ask the cranky old bastard what his name is.' ••••• Paddy staggered home very late after another evening with his drinking buddy, O’Leary. He took off his shoes to avoid waking his wife, Kathleen.

He tiptoed as quietly as he could toward the stairs leading to their upstairs bedroom, but misjudged the bottom step. As he caught himself by grabbing the banister, his body swung around and he landed heavily on his rump. A whiskey bottle in each back pocket broke and made the landing especially painful.

Managing not to yell, Paddy sprung up, pulled down his pants, and looked in the hall mirror to see that his butt cheeks were cut and bleeding. He managed to quietly find a full box of Band-Aids and began putting a Band-Aid as best he could on each place he saw blood. He then hid the now almost

family. During the Civil War my great uncle fought for the West!”

When U.S. stand-up comedian, Judy Carter, performed in front of a Chinese audience, her entire act fizzled! In a nation where pornography is illegal, and any remarks pertaining to sex, infidelity, or promiscuity are taboo, foreign comics often die a grisly death on stage.

It is doubly ironic that Chineseborn comedian, Joe Wong, has scored big in America (“Late Night with David Letterman,” “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” etc.), but is puzzled, himself, why his entire act fizzled, bigtime, for his home-grown audience of 1.3 billion Chinese! Even China’s own stand-up comics, such as Ding Guanguan, say he is “Unfunny.” And China’s biggest TV network, China Central Television, acknowledges Joe Wong’s comedic success in America, but failed to comprehend any of his comedy material!

As stated earlier, humor sometimes plays differently from country to country. For example, in the relatively isolated Chinese culture, their value system of hard work, honesty, and ‘save face’ heritage, all may cause them to view American humor as both ‘confusing’ and ‘un-funny.’

Rodney Dangerfield, a longtime American favorite, presented material that mainland China might perceive as, not only ridiculous, but, offensive as well: “One day as I came home early from work, I saw a guy jogging naked. I said to the guy, ‘Hey buddy, do you always do that?’ And he answers, “Only when you come home early!” Nevertheless, Rodney Dangerfield’s humor continued to be hilarious to American audiences: “I’m not a sexy guy. I went to a hooker. I dropped my pants. She dropped her price.” His selfeffacing humor made Rodney Dangerfield one of the most beloved and popular stand-up comics of all time – on American soil, that is. Dangerfield’s following joke never ‘plays’ well outside of America: “I come from a stupid

empty Band-Aid box and shuffled and stumbled his way to bed..

In the morning, Paddy woke up with searing pain in both his head and butt and Kathleen staring at him from across the room. She said, 'You were drunk again last night weren't you?'

Paddy said, 'Why you say such a mean thing?'

'Well,' Kathleen said, 'it could be the open front door, it could be the broken glass at the bottom of the stairs, it could be the drops of blood trailing through the house, it could be your bloodshot eyes, but mostly, it's all those Band-Aids stuck on the hall mirror. The Baptist Cowboy

A cowboy, who just moved to Wyoming from Texas, walks into a bar and orders three mugs of Coors. He sits in the back of the room, drinking a sip out of each one in turn. When he finishes them, he comes back to the bar and orders three more.

In America, his self-deprecating humor had no bounds: “What a childhood I had, why when I took my first step, my old man tripped me.” Ironically, the man who said he never got any respect, got plenty of it from his native soil: “My wife and I were happy for twenty years. Then we met.”

Nevertheless, Joe Wong, continues to win numerous American comedy awards, is hilariously popular on American television, yet remains somewhat puzzled over his dismal failure on his own soil. Wong’s ill-received humor in his native China went into ‘overkill’ when one of China’s biggest blogs told its 500,000 subscribers: “His (Wong’s) jokes are impossible for ordinary Chinese to get. If jokes need footnotes, it won’t be funny at all.”

The bartender approaches and tells the cowboy, "You know, a mug goes flat after I draw it. It would taste better if you bought one at a time."

The cowboy replies, "Well, you see, I have two brothers. One is an Airborne Ranger, the other is a Navy Seal, both serving overseas somewhere. When we all left our home in Texas we promised that we'd drink this way to remember the days when we drank together. So I'm drinking one beer for each of my brothers and one for myself." The bartender admits that this is a nice custom, and leaves it there.

The cowboy becomes a regular in the bar, and always drinks the same way. He orders three mugs and drinks them in turn. One day, he comes in and only orders two mugs.

All the regulars take notice and fall silent. When he comes back to the bar for the second round, the bar-

Aside from cross-cultural boundaries to consider, there is also a very obvious gender boundary to humor. For example, “The Three Stooges” are predominately popular with the American male, and predominately un-popular with the American female. Neuroscientists, while monitoring women and men in the laboratory, seem to reveal a predilection for males to giggle or laugh when viewing someone getting whacked over the head with a frying pan, or seeing someone’s nose tweaked, or eyeballs gouged in a comedy sketch. Women, on the other end of the spectrum, seem to manifest more empathy with the portrayed victim, even under the pretense of comedy. This shared sympathy seems vastly more common among females, over males, suggesting a possible inherent trait. And yes, while there may be exceptions, this appears to be the general rule regarding males, females, and “The Three Stooges.” Nonetheless, the debate continues as to why men find this American trio to be hilarious, and women (in general) do not. A broader and, perhaps, more interesting question is, where did the joke originate? Such a daunting query is, more likely than not, unanswerable. Reason being, that people laughing at the rudiments of a joke, riddle, or any humorous scenario (verbal or visual) seems to extend so far back in time that the genesis evaporates. It is fascinating to ponder a more fundamental question: When did humans first gain the physical capability to laugh? Did CroMagnon laugh? What about Neanderthal? Cultural anthropologists suspect that they did, profusely, but more along the visual or slapstick genre. Perhaps seeing a fellow Neanderthal slip and fall on mammoth feces elicited a rudimentary laugh (not that different from the great apes of today, such as the chimpanzees, gorillas, et al.) Visual humor is often universal (Charlie Chaplin is an amazing example), whereas cultural boundaries sometimes occur with the written or oral form of humor.

Strong visual humor may occur only in one’s imagination (such as when we dream), and yet these imagined images in the brain may be so powerful that the imagination can, at times, rival what we actually see in the physical world. Some jokes can trigger powerful imagery in the brain, and force the listener to “connect the dots” and ímagine what is happening. An example of powerful visual humor is the following, “I just flew into San Diego on ‘Hooter’s Airlines.’ Hooter’s Airlines is the only airline where male passengers actually pray for turbulence.” In comedy, ‘wordplay,’ can often escape the censors, by forcing the listener to complete the imagery in question, such as the Hooter’s Airlines joke above, wherein the

punchline is never clearly stated but, rather, the punchline is only implied, similar to the ‘double entendre.’ A classic example of the above ‘wordplay’ occurred years earlier, on ABC’s popular television program, “The Jack Paar Tonight Show.” Paar introduced the legendary, buxom movie star, Jayne Mansfield, in a manner that is now considered provocative and brazen humor for its time (1961). Straight-faced, Jack Paar introduced his well-endowed guest as such: “Here they are, Jayne Mansfield.” (The introduction was written by Dick Cavett, who later hosted his own popular show, “The Dick Cavett Show,” (1968-74)). In retrospect, comedy pundits consider the Mansfield introduction as one of the most celebrated quips delivered to mainstream America in modern showbusiness history, on a popular TV format. The introduction went so far as to stir America’s premier evangelist, Billy Graham, to quip, “This country knows more about Jayne Mansfield’s statistics than the Second Commandment.” In 1976, archeologist J. J. Van Dijk, stunned the world of science by unearthing a 3,900-year-old Babylonian tablet, in what is now known as modern-day, Iraq (southern Iraq). Upon this tablet, from 39 centuries ago, were written half-a-dozen riddles, all humorous, and all reflective of what made the ancient world laugh. It is supremely ironic that the staid, serious world of scientific inquiry, viz., archeology, has suddenly been forced to study, scrutinize, and feed at the trough of comedy material! Life often coalesces unlikely marriages (scientific inquiry and comedy) and, in this case, gives new meaning to Shakespeare’s popular coined phrase: “Strange Bedfellows.” The unearthed tablet of antiquity, dated 1,900 B.C.E, contains various riddles (all written in Sumerian) regarding flatulence (passing of gas, such as found in “Pull my Finger,”), and other elementary stabs at humor.

Throughout the millennia, we have had a lineage of comedy, and comics that has endured on almost every continent where humankind has been established. Comedy has survived the worst eras of tragedy, death, and destruction, all of which are still prevalent in our violent and volatile world today. In the final analysis, humor – along with faith, love, and resilience -- may prove to be our last, best hope for survival. On a planet over-populated by suspicious and paranoid residents who seem unable to traverse a single decade without waging war and bloodshed against each other, somewhere, for some reason or other, perhaps we need to laugh more, and weep less.

In fact, humor and laughter may be a long-hidden medicine that we, previously, never fully understood.

The scientific world is now rushing, eagerly, to try to learn more about this simple, elementary behavior known as laughing.

“Your sense of humor is one of the most powerful tools you have to make certain that your daily mood and emotional state support good health,” says respected researcher, Dr. Paul E. McGhee. Human arrogance has, for far too long, duped us into thinking that laughter was of little importance, and not worthy of proper study. The University of Maryland Medical Center describes a pioneering study which reveals that laughter helps prevent heart disease! Even the “Cancer Treatment Centers of America” is scrambling to find more clues as to, exactly, how laughter parlays into the power of healing, and has created the “Research Supporting Laughter Therapy” unit.

And if all this were still not enough, a huge bonus to all this research is that: Just the memory of laughter is beneficial. Can you imagine that? Just remembering a good laugh has proven to be good, healthy exercise!

I can do that. I can still recall Buddy Hackett, sitting on the set of “The Tonight Show,” across from Johnny Carson. It was the best medicine show on television! And the audience loved every minute of it! Including Carson, who had just thrown his pencil wildly in the air during a fit of uncontrolled laughter! Yup, I can still remember Buddy Hackett’s voice that magical night. I can still hear him, very clearly, and I swear I feel the better for it: “So, Johnny, my wife told me she wanted to be cremated and I said, ‘How about next Tuesday?’” Editor’s Note: Frederick Gomez has become not only a frequent contributor to The Paper but has become a good friend. When Frederick first submitted the idea of a scientific analysis of humor, jokes, and laughter, I cringed. It’s a bit like someone cutting open the throat of a canary to see why it sings so pretty, I thought.

But Frederick, as he always does, pulled it off. Enough actual jokes to bring a grin, if not a chuckle, or laugh . . . but the scientific analysis of why we find it/them funny. His comments below:

Man About Town

Have you had that experience where you meet someone and it is as though you have known them all your life?

Such was the case when I met Dr. Bhavaesh Patel a few years ago while visiting the Emergency Room at Palomar Medical Center. We chatted for, perhaps, 10 minutes and we hit it off perfectly. I asked him if he was still accepting new patients. He was. I switched to him as my primary care physician with Kaiser Permanente. That was about six, seven years ago.

Great physician, good friend, great husband and parent to a brood of very attractive kids.

Schall, 49, had hiked to the top of Nevada Falls with his children and was barefoot after cooling his toes in the rushing water. A baby rattlesnake nearby struck out and hit him, resulting in a five-day odyssey that included two emergency helicopter rides, three days in the ICU, eight vials of antivenin and a shot of morphine to ease his throbbing leg pain. He has said he was surprised so much pain and discomfort could result from such a small snake.

Schall is one of the more than 800 Californians who get bitten each year by venomous snakes. Most rattlesnake bites are not fatal — about one or two a year in California are — but they can deliver a nasty blow that can leave the victim in pain for weeks, if not months. Baby rattlesnakes can deliver a more-potent bite than an adult because they can’t control the dose they deliver. The toxicity of a snake’s venom can vary. “Missing Link” to College Boulevard Closer

Environmental Design Neighborhood Development (LEED ND) or “equivalent” standards, requiring new communities be located near to existing infrastructure, not in the middle of farms and natural habitat like the 15 or so General Plan Amendment (GPA) projects now wending their way through the County’s planning process. The first of these GPA’s to come before the Planning Commission on August 7, The Lilac Hills Ranch project, would level farms and chaparral for some 1,700 homes—far from schools, public transportation, sewer, etc.

Lilac Hills’ developers, Accretive Investments, wish to evade LEED ND standards by providing “equivalent” standards drawn up by the Home Innovation Research Labs (HIRL), a subsidiary of the National Association of Home Builders.[3] This “equivalency” may require “green” construction, but a development in the middle of open country would never meet LEED ND standards—LEED ND standards are about location, location, location. Shockingly, the staff at the County of San Diego

Their “global response” to public comments objecting to the proposal, encompasses the analysis by HIRL, rather than a professional, impartial response written by DPLU staff. This response claims “equivalency” where none exists.[4]

The County’s General Plan now calls for over 72,000 housing units in the unincorporated county—no need for the homes added by GPA’s. There is a need to preserve as much habitat as we can. Since seawater desalination is important to Southern California, I was pleased to participate in a tour of the Poseidon plant in Carlsbad. The tour was well attended by legislators from throughout the state, including Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins and Minority Leader Kristin Olsen.

Commission and Regional Water Quality Control Board. Through energy efficiencies and coastal habitat enhancement, Carlsbad is one of the most environmentally friendly desalination projects on earth. However, bureaucratic delays were compounded by years of costly lawsuits filed by environmental groups seeking to block the project.

The Carlsbad project was many years in the making. The permitting process alone took six years and required approval by the Coastal Commission, State Lands

While desal isn’t the only solution to our growing need for a reliable and sustainable water supply, tapping into this drought-proof resource has to be an essential part of any comprehensive plan that seeks to quench California’s massive thirst.

Desalination is Moving Forward

This $1 billion plant is the largest, most advanced desalination facility in North America. Once the project goes on-line, 50 million gallons of desalinated potable water will be supplied to North County daily. Presently, almost half the region’s water is imported by the Metropolitan Water District, though that amount is dropping. By 2020 MWD-supplied water will drop to about 30 percent of the total, with desalinated water from Carlsbad supplying seven to 10 percent.

With construction of new desalination projects under consideration throughout California, including a proposed new plant at Camp Pendleton, the hurdles faced at Carlsbad are worrisome. Obviously, the approval process must be expedited by eliminating or streamlining these bureaucratic and legal hurdles.

The pain had magically subsided to where I was only a wee bit tender for about an hour then all pain disappeared.

The flight attendant explained that there would be a delay, and if the passengers wanted to get off the aircraft the plane would re-board in 50 minutes.

Historically Speaking by Tom Morrow

Come Saturday morning, time to go to the meeting . . . but the back was acting up with more pain than it had on Friday. I decided I'd better have it looked at and treated after the meeting.

She asked a few questions, probed my phenomenally beautiful body, made a number of adjustments on my back . . . then did some type of leg pull that popped my lower back into where it was supposed to be. I felt an instant release of most of the pain . . . she did the other leg as well but the right leg was where the problem apparently was. (She talked about a Psoas muscle, that runs from the spine to the hip and groin area. That was what had tightened up and was causing my difficulty.)

Reportedly, a woman was flying from Seattle to San Francisco. Unexpectedly, the plane was diverted to Sacramento along the way.

Everybody got off the plane except one lady, who was blind.

A man had noticed her as he walked by and could tell the lady was blind because her guide dog lay quietly underneath the seats in front of her throughout the entire flight. He could also tell she had flown this very flight before because the pilot approached her, and calling her by name, said, "Kathy, we are in Sacramento for almost an hour. Would you like to get off and stretch your legs?" The blind lady said, "No thanks, but maybe Buddy would like to stretch his legs." Picture this:

All the people in the gate area came to a complete standstill when they looked up and saw the pilot walk off the plane with a guide dog for the blind! Even worse, the pilot was wearing sunglasses !

People scattered. They not only tried to change planes but they were trying to change airlines! Supposedly a true story.

Organizers called it the “Bonus Expeditionary Force Marchers,” but the media called it the “Bonus Army.” The U.S. Attorney General ordered the veterans removed from all government property. March of the Bonus Army

The burning of Washington, D.C., by the British Army during the War of 1812, wasn’t the only time our nation’s capital city was invaded. It happened the spring and summer of 1932 – some 83 years ago, when some 17,000 World War I veterans marched on the city, demanding a cash redemption of their bonus certificates, which had been issued to World War I veterans.

With their families, a total of 43,000 set up a make-shift encampments of tents and temporary shacks, resolving not to leave until the government made good on a 1924 “World War Adjusted Compensation Act.” The money

Army Chief of Staff, Gen. Douglas MacArthur, commanded the infantry and cavalry units, which was supported by six tanks. The tanks were commanded by Maj. George S. Patton. The Bonus Marchers, believing the troops were marching in their honor, cheered the troops until Patton ordered the cavalry to charge them -- an action which prompted the spectators to yell, "Shame! Shame!"

The Bonus Army marchers with their wives and children were driven out, and their shelters burned. The veterans fled across the Anacostia River to their largest camp, known as

College Boulevard appears to be a bit closer toward becoming a reality.

There has been a gap in the major north-south artery that connects with state Routes 78 and 76 in Oceanside and extends south into northeast Carlsbad. The missing piece is a 1.5-mile section though an undeveloped semirural area between Cannon Road and El Camino Real.

Last Tuesday, the Carlsbad council approved a detailed financing mechanism to divide up the cost of construction on that section, and approved a land-use plan to offset environmental damage the work will cause. The council agreed to set aside 17 acres as open space at the southern end of the extension along Agua Hedionda Creek. Much of that property near El Camino Real is now used as an equestrian center.

Construction is still probably two to three years away, officials said, but when completed the College Boulevard extension is expected to ease traffic at nearby crowded intersections.

Pastor Richard Huls, Retired It Is Harvest Time

The magic time of gardening has come. It is harvesting time. I know most believe October is with Octoberfests, but here in So. California harvest begins already in May. Many gardeners want to be the first to pick a ripe tomato by July 4th or slice a ripe watermelon in July. Actually, many succeed, even before these dates, to enjoy the first produce from the garden.

There is a sense of pride to enjoy fresh sweet corn, tomatoes, onions, carrots, melons, cucumbers, and many other vegetables before your neighbor does. In fact, many seed companies and

While the harvesting is satisfying, there is much more to gardening. It all begins in the spring with the seed catalogues promoting the old standbys, the heritage varieties, new varieties which seem endless, and, in today’s world, seeds from all parts of the world. The seed catalogues always promote the products with pictures of perfect fruit and vegetables. They will even tell you how and when to plant. What they don’t tell you is how much work is involved and how patient one must be before you harvest.

Actually the best part of gardening is the process – the ground preparation, planting, watering, weeding, and waiting. It is the journey. This is the lesson of life. Some can’t wait to retire and miss the joy of work. Parents often can’t wait for the kids to leave and miss their growing up. Many can’t wait to die to go to heaven and miss the joy and adventure of living. The recent Pluto pictures illustrate the journey- thousands of hours in development, millions of miles in travel, years of anticipation and expectation, and then the harvest of pictures. What a journey of living!

That was fine provided it was of a natural or neutral skin tone, but after they put on their lipstick, they would press their lips to the mirror leaving dozens of little lip prints. Every night the maintenance man would remove them; and the next day the girls would put them back.

Finally, the principal and Sister Mary decided that something had to be done. She called all the girls to the bathroom and met them there with the maintenance man. She explained that all these lip prints were causing a major problem for the custodian, who had to clean the mirrors every night (you can just imagine the yawns from the little princess-

An Option for Your Tower

In a perfect world everyone would have their own PC. No one would ever need to touch any PC but their own. Whether at work, school or play, your PC would always look exactly like you want it to look. It would stay on the straight and narrow and never stray into unknown and perhaps dangerous regions of the Internet. It would never switch browsers, change settings or download files or programs that you didn’t want or need. Ah, but this is not a perfect world.

Every week home and business users bring us PCs with problems caused by “guest” users. These are software (operating system or applications) problems caused by “someone else” using the computer. When a fellow employee at work, a

“Hooverville,” when President Hoover ordered the assault stopped. However, MacArthur, feeling the Bonus March was an attempt to overthrow the U.S. government, ignored the President and ordered a new attack. Fifty-five veterans were injured and 135 arrested. Maj. Dwight D. Eisenhower, later our 34th President, served as one of MacArthur's junior aides. Believing it wrong for the Army's highest-ranking officer to lead an action against fellow veterans, Ike strongly advised MacArthur against taking any public role: "I told that dumb son-of-a-bitch not to go down there," he said later.

A decorated hero from the war, who had saved Patton's life during the war, approached him the day after the Army’s action to sway him. Rather than listen to the man whom Patton had personally decorated for his bravery under fire, was coldly rejected, saying "I do not know this man.”

The Bonus Army incident proved disastrous for Hoover's chances at re-election; he lost the 1932 election in a landslide to Franklin D. Roosevelt. In May 1933, a second demonstration was organized. Roosevelt provided the marchers with a camp-

family member or a house guest wants to use your PC for some reason, you probably say yes and then hope for the best. For every problem we see here at The Computer Factory there are probably scores that we don’t see because the home or business user either fixes the problem or puts up with the annoyance. Even if you could protect your PC from “guests,” you may still want to insulate your critical files from the perils of WWW surfing. How can you keep your important files safe from Internet baddies and yet be able to surf the net? The answer, the “guest HDD.” The “guest HDD” is simply a second HDD (hard disk drive) that has the OS (operating system) and device drivers required to operate your PC. It can be a clone of your main HDD if you chose. The key to using a “guestHDD” is the device called a “mobilrack.” The “mobilrack” is a HDD “dock” that mounts on the front of your tower just like your DVD-R/W. When you’re using your PC for normal operations the “work HDD” is in the “dock.” When someone else needs to use your PC you pull your “work HDD” out of the “dock” and insert the “guest HDD.” Now no matter what your “guest” or the Internet does to your PC, everything goes back to normal when you put your “work HDD” back in site in Virginia, with three meals a day. Roosevelt arranged for his wife Eleanor to visit the site unaccompanied, but the most she could offer was a promise of jobs in the newly created Civilian Conservation Corps. One veteran commented: "Hoover sent the army, Roosevelt sent his wife."

In 1936, at the height of the Depression, Congress overrode President Franklin D. Roosevelt's veto and paid the veterans their bonus years. Check out my novels at: www.tomorrowsnovels.com

the “mobilrack.”

With a mobilrack every member of the family can have their own personal HDD. Schools that give each student a HDD save money and time by reducing the number of PCs and service required. Business can allow personal use of PCs during breaks and lunch by installing “mobilracks” on business workstations so employees can use them with their own HDDs.

The cost of a “mobilrack” is about $25 and the cost of a good 500GB HDD about $60. Once the system is established it can also be used as a redun-

Escondido, CA—In a 2002 issue of Neurosurgical Focus, a peerreviewed article was published by a Dr. Michael D. Martin, MD et al. in which the third sentence states: “The disc itself is active tissue that contains significant mechanisms for self-repair.” That article was published by a neurosurgeon and written directly for neurosurgeons.

“The Disc Itself Is Active Tissue...”

So what does that really mean to us? It tells us that the disc itself does have a God-given ability to heal and repair if provided the proper mechanisms for self-healing. There is a specific mechanism inherent in each of the spinal discs called the “pump mechanism of disc nutri-tion” (see Fig 1). When this mechanism is not working properly, the spinal discs will begin to die causing bulges, herniations, and eventually spinal stenosis.

The spinal disc is one of the very few tissues in the body that does not have a direct blood supply for circulation. The only way that the disc gets the circulation of water, oxygen and nutrients for self-repair is via this specific disc pump mechanism. What happens when you decrease cir-culation in any type of tissue, whether it be animal tissue, plant tissue or human tissue? Exactly, it begins to become weak and begins to degenerate.

Symptoms Are NOT The Problem

Now the symptoms of pain, numbness,

Let’s take a look at a plant for example...if the leaves on a plant begin to turn brown, would you say that the

brown leaves are the plant’s problem? Of course not, the leaves turning brown is just a condition that is telling you that there is something wrong with the plant. The plant is unhealthy and needs water and nutrients. You could spray paint the leaves green but it just covers up the condition. The underlying problem still exists and will continue to produce brown leaves until you fix the actual problem. and tingling that most experience with bulging, herniated or degenerative discs are NOT the problem. The definition of a symptom: “something that indicates the existence of something else.” It is just like the dashboard of your car telling you that something is wrong (brake lights out, engine needs checked, overheating, etc.) Those lights that appear in your car dash are NOT the problem. You can remove the lights surgically or put a piece of duct tape over the lights but the problem will NOT be fixed...the problem is still present.

extent of your disc damage for only $70. This examination will consist of a detailed neurological evaluation, extensive orthopedic testing, and a detailed analysis of the findings of your evaluation. He will sit down with you and go over your condition with you in complete detail. You will know exactly what is causing all your pain (or other symptoms).

In your spine, when the pump mechanism of disc nutrition fails, the disc will begin to de-generate and become weak. This weakness in the disc is what produces the bulging, herniated, and degenerative discs.

The treatment that is provided at Dr. Heilman’s Spine and Neuropathy Care Center in Escondido is revolutionary and is specifically designed to artificially re-create the pump mechanism in the discs which allows the spinal discs to heal and repair. The best part of the treatment is that it uses no drugs, no injections, and no surgery. Plus it’s painless and many patients relax and fall asleep while undergoing the treatment. The amount of treatment needed to allow the discs to heal and repair varies from person to person and can only be determined after a detailed neurological and orthopedic evaluation. We do NOT accept everyone for treatment and will let you know if we can accept your case for treatment. Dr. Stephen Heilman, DC at the Spine and Neuropathy Care Center in Escondido, CA will do a spinal disc severity examination to determine the
