August is the month for vacations and that often means a road trip - off to Granma’s House or a national park; sometimes a soiree to new lands and new places. Regardless, Americans in general, and Californians, in particular, enjoy seeing America up close and personal. John Steinbeck, nearing the end of his writing career recorded his road-trip experiences in the best-selling book, Travels With Charlie. Steinbeck claimed he drove the Eastern seaboard, crossed to the Midwestern prairie states then north to the Dakotas, picked up Highway 66 in Chicago and followed ‘The Mother Road’ across the desert to California, then north on the 101 to Oregon and Washington. He chose early August for his trip, “after the summer holidays but before the crops are harvested and school bells ring.” Steinbeck planned to sleep in his half-ton, customized pickup, “under the stars, getting close to
America.” His purpose? “To plumb the spirit and attitudes of the American people.”
Unfortunately, many scholars today doubt the veracity of Mr. Steinbeck’s journey but, nevertheless his book gave travel writing a great boast, and his observations for the most part, seemed to express the moods and attitudes of America, pre-Woodstock. The trip my wife and I took from Escondido, California to Seattle, Washington, lacked Steinbeck’s ambition and covered less distance. Our motive was simple: After a period of work and responsibility we simply want-
ed to get away, to smell the smells and taste the delights of other cities, so we rented a car and hit the road, Google Maps playing on our cell phone.
We drove to Seattle, then took Southwest Airlines home. Driving The Redwood Highway, Highway 101 and other roadways, we enjoyed incredible sights – large herds of elk and deer, wide ocean vistas with dolphins and whales playing in azure waters; tall, majestic red woods, serene California towns and everywhere, people, some pleasant, some cranky, some

a bit confused, but always fascinating. We met first-hand the 900pound gorilla everyone seems to either ignore or cherish – marijuana usage and its future role in our society – and returned with new insights and viewpoints, which was the purpose of our travels.
We left Escondido at 10:30, June 29th, 2017, travelling the 5 to the 405 to the 101, to the 33, through beautiful winding hills to Ojai, where My Bride of Many Summers had booked a lovely suite at Ojai Retreat. We relaxed on the veranda with coffee and chocolates beneath huge avocado trees overlooking the glorious Ojai Valley. Good job, Girl.
After dinner at Oysteria in Ojai, we sat in the beautiful downtown park watching families with dogs and kids and ice cream cones stroll by. Each 4th of July, Ojai has a parade. It must be a doozy because 5 days before the event - before classic convertibles carrying young ladies in imitation pearl tiaras and sequined sashes drive slowly by as high school cheerleaders do cart wheels and clowns in floppy shoes and blonde wigs cavort and marching bands led by majors and majorettes dressed in red, white and blue star-studded costumes toss batons in the golden air, while the band plays “Stars and Stripes Forever,” – long before any of these

Remarkably, according to residents, no chairs, seats or shoes are vandalized or stolen during this time. Up early the morning of the 30th, for coffee at Beacon Bakery – splitting a savory and apricot roll – we stopped at Knead Bakery for artisan bread (for lunch-time sandwiches), then headed north on Highway 33. The drive was both beautiful and challenging, elephant-back hills covered with golden grass, tall trees scratching the blue sky. We pass a flock of wild turkeys, and later, a small herd of deer. We entered grape country around noon. At a café/grocery store/ gathering place nestled amid acres of green grape vines, I get my first lecture on the marriage of marijuana and wine. Arturo Sanchez and his two sons, Rodolpho and Felix, trim grape vines and cultivate marijuana plants for $13.25 an hour. Arturo did stoop labor for over 30 years, he says, but now works standing “up like a man.” His two sons are ‘new’ to the profession. Rodolpho, twenty-eight, is married with two ninas and a nino to feed. He started farm work in 2006, when “construction dried up during the recession and I needed a job.”
The Lord was pleased with the man's honesty and gave him all three axes to keep, and the woodcutter went home happy.
Some time later the woodcutter was walking with his wife along the riverbank, and his wife fell into the river. When he cried out, the Lord again appeared and asked him, "Why are you crying?"
"Oh Lord, my wife has fallen into the water!"
The Lord went down into the water and came up with ANGELINA JOLIE. "Is this your wife?" the Lord asked. "Yes," cried the woodcutter.
The Lord was furious. "You lied! That is an untruth!"
The woodcutter replied, "Oh, forgive me, my Lord. It is a misunderstanding. You see, if I had said 'no' to ANGELINA JOLIE , You would have come up with CAMERON DIAZ. Then if I said 'no' to her, you would have come up with my wife. Had I then said 'yes,' you would have given me all three. Lord, I am a poor man, and am not able to take care of all three wives, so THAT'S why I said yes to ANGELINA JOLIE." The moral of this story is: Whenever a man lies, it is for a good and honorable reason and for the benefit of others.

A pamphlet I read in our hotel room advertised wine tasting tours that included marijuana tasting as well if I read correctly. Any truth to this? Felix smiles at my ignorance. “What do you know about wine?”
“Nothing. Just there are reds and whites.”
He smiles. “That’s a start. Wine and marijuana go together like dogs and meat,” he says. “There’s much to know about wine and,” he hesitates, searching for the right word, “weed. But it is safe to say that a dry, or sweet wine, a red - when paired with certain strains of marijuana like Fruity Pebbles, Mango Kush or Strawberry Banana brings out the natural sweetness in the pot, while giving the wine a nice bite, yet not overpowering the taste buds, resulting in a nice high.” He pauses to see if I’m tracking. After I pick my jaw off the floor, Felix continues. “Chefs and ‘foodies’ combine fruity marijuana strains with acidic white wines like a Chardonnay. This brings out a layer of sweetness to the wine and

I’d say maybe 25,000 to 30,000 acres are under cultivation.” Another jaw drop from me. “Who buys these grapes?”

Rodolpho answers, “With climate change in areas where grapes are traditionally grown, many foreign wineries buy our product because our ocean breezes and cool nights make for a more flavorful grape. The next morning, we strolled along the Big Sur River a mile or so, took a seat on a log, drank warm coffee and devoured pastries while blue jays flitted from tree-to-tree and ground squirrels played tag and water murmured over smooth rocks, heading for the nearby ocean. Then up Highway 101 under majestic redwoods, crossing the Russian River, the Eel, the Mendocino, where families camp and their kids ride inner tubes and swim in the crystal-clear water, celebrating the glory of America. Lunch is BBQ ribs (left over from last night), herb bagels, cheese and salami – at a picnic table over-looking the south fork of the Eel, while youngsters splash in the shallow water nearby. As if by magic, our return to the main highway is delayed by a big herd of elk, maybe 250 – 300 mommas with little ones and yearlings – taking their time to cross the road. Conjuring up animals is a specialty of Nancy’s. On a river excursion in Belize, our guide was amazed at the number of bird species they spotted that hadn’t been seen for years. On climbing in the boat, Nancy said, “We’ll see some unusual sights today.” In Africa we saw lions, leopards and cheval cats in one night-time safari, a rarity indeed. Earlier, Nancy had said, “We’ll see some different animals tonight.” Millennium Heaven
Healdsburg is a nice little millennium, tourist-robbing town with ivycovered buildings and a city park beneath redwoods. Young couples by the dozens push child carriers, as strong and durable looking as a WWII tank, into hundreds of winetasting establishments. Our overpriced room is in a 50‘s-vintage motel, but quite nice.

The highway curves and winds some two-hundred thirteen glorious miles with redwoods dwarfing tall pines, larch, and beside the road, Queen Anne’s Lace and black berry vines. When the road rises we catch glimpses between the redwoods of white ocean surf breaking on huge rocks.
Traffic is sparse, the other drivers wave greetings, their license plates reading Alberta (Canada), Wyoming, Pennsylvania, and Oregon. This is Indian territory, home to the Yuroks, California’s largest Native American tribe. Eureka! – We Found It

a 24-year-old woman was shot and killed in Oceanside and a 25-yearold neighbor has been arrested. Both victim and the accused lived in the same apartment complex.
The suspect, Eduardo Arriola, and the victim, Devon Rideout, a U.S. Navy corpsman assigned to Camp Pendleton had no other known connection. Rideout was found with gunshot wounds Friday just before 4 p.m. at The Dylan Apartment Homes on Los Arbolitos Boulevard, near El Camino Real and Mission Avenue.
Arriola was arrested on suspicion of murder at 12:30 a.m. Saturday. He is being held at Vista jail without bail. North City Development Moves Forward
Activity around Cal State has gotten heavier as the San Marcos’ North City development moves forward rapidly. Visions call for a new university extension building, and a suite of road improvements underway over the summer. Clearly, this ambitious plan has gotten a jump
start and continues to draw support. The development, called by some the “Gaslamp District” of North County, encompasses about 150 acres. Sea Breeze Properties is the developer for the district. A spokesman for the developer said he hoped to build out in seven to 10 years. In February, the company broke ground on a six-story structure that will house the university’s extension program, plus some of its student services.. The building will span 140,000 square feet of space, including 15,000 square feet of retail, he said. Meanwhile, roadwork is underway to accommodate the new buildings. Starting this summer, and continuing through summer 2019, construction on roads and other infrastructure in the area will be underway, the city stated on its website.
The North City area has been growing since 2012, when the company opened the QUAD, a student housing facility with apartments featuring private bedrooms, flat-screen TVs and sleek, modern furnishings. The complex, now completed, offers 850 beds, and is fully occupied for the 2018-19 school year, a spokesman said.

This summer Prep Kitchen opened downstairs at Block C, bringing its signature farm-to-table menu and indoor-outdoor dining to North City. The company has existing locations La Jolla, Del Mar and Little Italy, and plans to open a venue in Los Angeles. In addition, the complex now includes FRESH Healthy Cafe, offering juices, sandwiches and acai bowls, Grit Coffee Shop, and Newtopia Cyder, a tasting room for draft cider. Among the district’s other drinking and dining destinations is Urge Common House, a sprawling “eatertainment” complex located on Redel Road off of Barham, that opened in 2017, and offers a brewery, bocce ball and bowling. The PIMA medical building, which provides vocational training in health care fields, also opened last year on Carmel Road, next to Highway 78. Together, those new and upcoming facilities are the start of a pedestrian-friendly live-work community in San Marcos, that seeks to provide housing, dining, education and jobs within the existing city footprint.

Well, I finally made it to the next level, one that many mortals do not achieve. I do not take lightly that I reached my 90th birthday this past Wednesday, July 23rd. Ok, so what? What's next? With the arrival of our oldest son and wife from NY in July and a large collection of family in California we began a week long birthday celebration. I loved every minute of it, but I'm glad it's over. Back to more normal life now, so I will have a bit more time for emailing my friends. /s/Sid Colquitt, Escondido, CA.

Ray, his partner, Vince Larkin, and dear old Mother Nutter (Jeannie), and a table full of neighbors and friends gathered to tell tall tales and recall great memories. (Ray worked at Costco here in San Marcos, got an offer to move to Seattle and accepted it. Very happy.) Great foood at A Touch of France; my favorite was Eggs Benedict, which I had never had before. Good food! Good company! We’ll do it again when Ray and Vince return.

After a Mexican-style dinner in the hotel restaurant, we drive the water front, looking at beautiful, restored Victorian houses that sing of a more glorious day. We adjourn to Starbucks, much to the consternation of My Lady who likes quiet little coffee shops with pour overs where Sweet ‘N Low is not welcome.
The Eureka Times - Standard says up front they grow a marijuana plant in their office, and “all but one of us smokes pot in moderation.” Their attitude toward weed is open to say the least. Their editorial was on homelessness.
Eureka could use a good bath, it’s streets are trash-lined, sidewalks over grown, teeming with homeless young people. The panhandlers in Starbucks’ parking lot walk backwards, yelling their demands: “Hey man, I need two bucks. Fork it over.” They block entry to the coffee shop until a rent-a-cop intervenes.
“This is the major problem facing Eureka, and Humboldt County. The root cause is deeper than simply saying ‘let’s clean up our act.’ Many of our residents are homeless due to drug and alcohol abuse, which leads to un-employment. Addicts good employees do not make. The sad fact is, many are young, college educated. Without income, they go on welfare in such numbers the welfare budget is depleted. This puts additional strain on other public services – our police personnel, park and recreation department, store and home owners and bankrupts both the patience and the budgets of NGO’s and other institutions. Our city administration must attack this problem now, because the problem will only get worse when recreational use of marijuana arrives.” Ah, the 900-pound gorilla
Inside, most tables are filled with down-and-outers nursing coffee and reading their phones. Their youth breaks our heart, most of them look to be no more than twenty-five. Two tricks I use to familiarize myself with a new town: Read public bulletin boards and always, the local newspaper. A quick scan of the bulletin board advertises an AA Meeting and two Narcotics Anonymous gatherings, one for newcomers, the other
again.
When I get up to put the newspaper back where I got it, a middle-aged gent in jeans, his shirt open at the collar, looks up from his computer. “Care to have a seat?” I sit.
“You seem interested in people. I’m with Humboldt State,” my table companion says. “We’re in the fourth year of a five-year study on homelessness.” “What are the highlights of your findings so far?”
“It’s too early to make a final assessment, but the homelessness population grows from 9 to 11% a year according to our statistics. We don’t know why exactly, though we have a few ideas.” “And they are?”
“That group outside are for the most part, heroin and crack cocaine abusers. Without an all-out push for better treatment facilities and intervention programs, they’re lost to society in my opinion.”
He pauses. “Most addicts don’t work. With no income, they have few housing options under our present system.” He looks around, surreptitiously. “We’ve found no evidence that marijuana usage is addictive in the medical sense, but there is evidence that many users are psychologically hooked. port in the Willamette Valley, the stepping off point for the beautiful Multnomah Falls area. At our first traffic stop in town, we see a homeless man sleeping in the roses, his faithful dog on watch. We check into Society Hotel, within walking distance of the Portland Blues Festival, at Tom McCall Waterfront Park along the Willamette River. Again, we’re impressed by the number of young people, some serving coffee, or plating food, waiting tables, even driving Ubers.
In Portland bike riders have the right of way, and bikes are numerous, making cars the mule of the future. We walk two blocks over from the hotel to the famous Voodoo Donut Shop, but the line is long, thus we’ll be deprived of a Bacon Maple Bar or Old Dirty Bastard – a confection with chocolate frosting, pieces of Oreo Cookies and a slather of peanut butter. We Uber to Bollywood, the Indian restaurant, and gorge on authentic food with literally 100’s of dishes on the menu. The food’s great, the service good, the music entertaining.
Portland brags about its easy toget-to-outdoors, and rightfully so. The famous Multnomah Falls, located in the Columbia River Gorge, is a short drive away. Here one can drive or bike the historic Columbia River Highway to Bridal Veil Falls, an impressive water fall with over 2 million visitors yearly. The upper trail takes us around the precipice of the cliffs for a magnificent view of the Gorge. In his journal, as co-leader of the history-making Corps of Discovery that explored the massive Louisiana Purchase from 1801 to 1805, Colonel Willian Clark wrote of the Columbia River Gorge: Capt Lewis and my Self walked down to See the place the Indians pointed out as the worst place in passing through the gut, which we found difficuelt of passing without great danger, but as the portage was impractiable with our large Canoes, we Concluded to Make a portage of our most valuable articles and run the canoes thro accordingly on our return divided the party Some to take over the Canoes, and others to take our Stores across a portage of a mile to a place on the Chanel below this bad whorl & Suck, with Some others I had fixed on the Chanel with roapes to throw out to any who Should unfortunately meet with difficuelty in passing through; great number of Indians viewing us from the high rocks under which we had to pass, the 3 first Canoes passed thro very well, the 4th nearly filled with water, the last passed through by takeing in a little water, thus Safely below what I conceved to be the worst part of this Chanel, felt my Self extreamly gratified and pleased.
The Columbia River Gorge – where the Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean - is not only incredibly beautiful, it has provided a transportation corridor for thousands of years. In ancient times, Native Americans would travel through the Gorge to trade at Celilo Falls, both along the river and over Lolo Pass on the north side of Mount Hood. Early European and American settlers subsequently established steamboat lines and railroads. Today, the Burlington Northern Santa Fe runs a freight line along the Washington side of the river, while its rival, the Union Pacific serves the Oregon shore. Until 1997, Amtrak's “Pioneer” also used the UP tracks and the “Empire Builder” passenger train uses the BNSF tracks today to pass through the gorge. The beautiful Vista House at the top of the cliff gives a 360-degree view of the surrounding area, a clear, awesome and never-to-be forgotten look at the Gorge. *** Independence Day, the 4th of July, is the third and final day of the Portland Blues Festival. We toddle carefully through the crowds, watching folks in various stages of dress and undress, from Native American costumes to almost just birthday suits. Native American drummers line the walkways along with Incan flute players and American county music bands. The venue is huge, with as many as ten bands playing at the same time without hurting the acoustics of either. The crowd is boisterous and happy early on. As the night proceeds many celebrants, mostly young white men, pass out on the grass, done in by the abundance of Rainer Ale and Olympic beer, and, of course, marijuana. The air is blue from the blunts circulating in the crowd.
A woman much too old for the revealing dress she has on, seats her son next to us, while she gyrates on the grass alone, bare-footed. I offer to buy the young man, who wears a perpetual look of chagrin on his face, a soft drink. He accepts. His mother says, “And me a beer.” “I don’t buy alcohol. A soft drink, a sandwich, but no booze.”
When I return with four Cokes, she takes this as an invitation to join us, and launches into a long, sad story to Nancy Anne about the men who have done her wrong. I try to engage the young man with the inane question, “What do you want to be when you grow up? He smiles. “A writer maybe. I have the first requirement. An un-happy childhood.” *** Up the I-5 to Seattle, surrounded by Puget Sound, mountains and evergreen forests. The outdoor adventurer here has thousands of acres to hike and explore. Washington

Would you like to see famed, deceased actor, James Dean’s last signature? Dean’s car crash death in his 55 Porsche 550 Spyder occurred the day he got a ticket for going 65 mph in a 55 mph zone at 3:30 pm on September 30, 1955 ( a Friday). Approximately at 5:00 pm he was killed in Coalinga, CA. He was born February 8, 1931. Hard to believe he would be 87 if he were alive today. He will be remembered as ever young. I have a copy of his speeding ticket, his last signature.
Some fascinating comments spoken, heard, or written in the 1950s: My how things have changed in 50 years. “Have you seen the new cars coming out this year? The copy read---“Highest pay load—up to 595 lbs. more than other half-tonners. Lowest priced pick-up—bar none! Save $1 out of $10 on gas and maintenance, super tough frame and chassis, strongest pick-up box made with double walled full cab—with sliding rear window for maximum ventilation. It was available in 4 engine choices that all ran on regular grade gas. Such options as nonslip “twin traction” rear axle and a company exclusive feature called “Hill Holder” which let you be stopped on an incline and not have keep your foot on the brake. The company presented this truck to have, “Good looks with practical purpose”. The truck that was advertised “Tougher than the job” was called__________ and built by_______.

Getting Ready to be Counted
The first national census was taken in 1790 and we’re gearing up for the next one in 2020.
There’s a lot riding on the census. For one thing, Congressional representation is based on an accurate count, and distribution of around $65 billion in federal funding will be heavily impacted by the census. While every state gets two Senators regardless of population, an incorrect count could easily impact representation in the House of Representatives. And if we’re undercounted, fewer of our tax dollars will make the round trip from California to Washington and back.
At the state level, the new census will result in re-drawing of State Assembly and Senate boundaries. The last time that happened was in 2011, which had a major impact locally. For example, after the census Escondido was no longer split between two Assembly districts with two separate Assemblymembers in Sacramento. The 2020 census will be the first one conducted largely online. With 31% of California considered “under-connected,” and with 9 of the nation’s 50 hardest to
count counties in California, this may be problematic. Incidentally, one of those hard to count counties is San Diego. Among the hardest to count populations are the homeless, immigrants, rural white renters and Native Americans.
The President gets the final numbers by the end of 2020, and redistricting counts will be reported to the states by March 31, 2021 to be used in redrawing district boundaries for the 2022 election. Preliminary planning for the census is already underway. In 2010 California budgeted just $2 million for the census; $90 million is being budgeted this time. We need an accurate count and the work is already underway to make sure we get one. state’s largest city, Seattle is home to Microsoft and Amazon. The futuristic Space Needle, a 1962 World’s Fair legacy, is its most iconic landmark.
Seattle also has a beautiful public library. A slab of glass intersected with aluminum and metal that rises from the street like a mirror. It features private reading rooms and soaring vistas of the surrounding area. Designed by Joshua PrinceRamus, it is a dizzying, dazzling post-modern structure that symbolizes the past and future Seattle, the largest city in the American Pacific West. We check in at Hotel Andra, after taking the light rail from airport to town. (A great feature of Seattle is the availability of public transportation with easy access to almost every part of the city.)
Travelling with Nancy has its drawbacks – no lollygagging in your room - and many benefits, such as you’ll see amazing sights. For example, Chihuly Gardens – a place of exquisite blown glass blown and fashioned by the artist Dale Chihuly. Some pieces are tall as a palm tree, some tiny as thimble. All are beautiful. For a sandwich you can’t beat, try Salumi Delicatessen for great eats. We’re talking Tuscan Finocchione, studded with fennel seeds and spicy sopressata, and other incredible
sandwiches, the absolute best I’ve ever eaten. They open at 11:00, so get there at 10 and be one of the first twenty-five in line!

And what would a trip to Seattle be like without a pilgrimage to the Pendleton Factory for heavy wool shirts I’ll never need in warm San Diego?
Seattle is known for its diversity. An example? Riding the light rail, we pass a street where in the middle of the block is a Moslem mosque. At the corner, on one side, a Catholic Church, on the other, a Methodist Church. Two blocks up, a Jewish Temple. To my knowledge, there have been no race riots here, the people live and work and love without incident. *** Upon our return to Escondido, we settle into our Jacuzzi for a soak. The golfers are out on the course. Herons and mallards and crows and cormorants fly overhead. Hummingbirds flit in the Kangaroo Paw plants and rose bushes.
Boone remains an iconic figure in American history. He was a legend in his own lifetime, especially after an account of his adventures was published in 1784, framing him as the typical American frontiersman. After his death, he was frequently the subject of heroic “tall tales” and works of fiction. America’s First Trailblazing Pioneer
One of America’s first folk heroes was Daniel Boone, born, Nov. 2, 1734, the sixth of 11 children. The Daniel Boone Homestead was four miles from the Mordecai Lincoln House, who was great-great-grandfather of future president Abraham Lincoln.

Following the war, Boone worked as a surveyor and merchant, but fell deeply into debt through failed Kentucky land speculation. Frustrated with the legal problems resulting from his land claims, in 1799, Boone emigrated to eastern Missouri, where he spent most of the last two decades of his life (180020).
Historian John Mack Faragher cautions the folk image of Boone as semiliterate is misleading, and argues that he "… acquired a level of literacy that was the equal of most men of his times." He often was the only literate person in groups of frontiersmen.
Boone was not the simple frontiersman of legend, however: he engaged in land speculation on a large scale, buying and selling claims to tens of thousands of acres. The land market in frontier Kentucky was chaotic, and Boone's ventures ultimately failed because his investment strategy was faulty and because his sense of honor made him reluctant to profit at someone else's expense. According to historian Faragher, "Boone lacked the ruthless instincts that speculation demanded." Boone lived much of the last part of his life with the family of his son Nathan in this home near present-day Defiance, Missouri. He often spent time in the company of children and grandchildren, where he continued to hunt and trap as much as his health and energy levels permitted.
Boone is most famous for his exploration and settlement of what is now Kentucky. It was still considered part of Virginia but was on the western side of the Appalachian Mountains. As a young adult, Boone supplemented his farm income by hunting and trapping game, and selling their pelts in the fur market. Because Boone grew up on the frontier, he had little formal education, but gained deep knowledge of the woods. Boone received some tutoring from family members, though his spelling remained unorthodox. In 1775, Boone blazed his “Wilderness Road” through the Cumberland Gap in the Appalachian Mountains from North Carolina and Tennessee into Kentucky. There, he founded the village of Boonesborough, Kentucky, one of the first American settlements west of the Appalachian Mountains.
On July 5, 1776, Boone's daughter Jemima and two other teenaged girls were captured outside Boonesborough by an Indian war party, who carried the girls north towards the Shawnee towns in the Ohio country. Boone and a group of men from Boonesborough followed in pursuit, finally catching up with them two days later. The incident became the most celebrated event of Boone's life. James Fenimore Cooper created a fictionalized version of the episode in his classic novel The Last of the Mohicans (1826). Boone served as a militia officer during the Revolutionary War (1775–83), which, in Kentucky, was fought primarily between the American settlers and British-allied Indians. Boone was captured by Shawnee warriors in 1778, escaping in time to alert Boonesborough of an Indian attack.
Daniel Boone died of natural causes on Sept. 26, 1820, five weeks short of his 86th birthday.
Boone was the subject of a TV series that ran on NBC from 1964 to 1970. In the theme song for the series, Boone was described as a "big man" in a "coonskin cap.” This did not describe the real Boone, who was not a big man and did not wear a coonskin cap. Boone was portrayed this way because Fess Parker, the tall actor who played him, was essentially reprising his role as Davy Crockett from an earlier TV series. That Boone could be portrayed the same way as Crockett, another American frontiersman with a very different personality, was another example of how Boone's image was reshaped to suit popular tastes. Corrina Dugger, of the Sacramento office of the State Parks Department, Division of Boating & Waterways, will be the guest speaker and explain the new program requiring all boat operators to have a California Boater Identification Card. The program requires boat operators take a boater safety course, either on line or at an in-person class. Currently, only those boat operators, age 12 -18, need an ID card. But the age requirement goes up each year until all ages are required by 2025. The cost of the card is $10.00. Classes held throughout the state, by independent firms, is an additional cost. Kinda like traffic school for boaters. “Finally, we’ll have mandatory education. It will apply to everyone, eventually,” said a Coast Guard Auxiliary volunteer at March’s Fred Hall Outdoor & Fishing Show in Del Mar. The volunteer shared a 2015 state report, which stated, “724 California recreational vessels were involved in reported accidents and 49 boaters died. Only one operator in the fatal accidents had taken prior training.” The Senior Anglers of Escondido club meetings are held the second Friday of each month, open to all anglers age 50 and above, at the Park Avenue Community Center, 210 Park Ave., Escondido, 92025. At a time when many cities are struggling with the visible impacts of chronic homelessness, it is important to support the organizations that provide front line services to the most overlooked portion of our population. Interfaith Community Services in Escondido has been helping people get back on their feet for nearly forty years. They help everyone, including seniors, veterans, families, youth

CHANGES
Escondido, as well as much of the Southwest U.S., has experienced some radical heat recently. Even though we are in August, when we expect some warm weather, the temperatures have been unusually high. Were we prepared? I must admit I wasn’t, especially as a gardener. Trees, bushes, vegetable plants, and all living things, including me, needed more water just to stay alive and well. While we were told there was a heat wave coming, most watered as usual and kept the same drinking pattern. Consequently, there was a lot of harm done, because of the heat. Adequate preparation could have avoided much damage. Similarly, life follows the same pattern. While we would like to predict the future, we know we can’t control it. Things just happen. Why? We try
to give reasons, or at least struggle to accept premature deaths, heart attacks, strokes, cancer, accidents, natural catastrophes, and other maladies. People of faith often attribute them to God’s Providence and will. This helps to make them easier to accept. Others see them as the circumstances of life – “Life is like that” – and we have to learn to live with them. Either way it is both an intellectual as well as an emotional adjustment. To not be caught off guard, it is best to know that most anything can happen. We can be prepared. There are many resources that can help us. There is God, who invites us to trust Him. We have many community organizations, such as churches and their many programs, family members and friends, and professional services. I also try to be available with the Dial-a-Prayer service which sometimes gives people an opportunity to express themselves, such as a woman did this past week with the expression, “I am thankful for airconditioning.” She was prepared for the heat wave and used the resource to keep cool.

Be sure to pick up any pet waste and take it with you or discard in a designated receptacle. • Share your air. Smoking and vaping are not permitted within 100 feet of any public park, trail or facility, except in designated smoking areas. • Leave your drinks and glass containers home. As computers got cheaper, the parts business began to slow. Dealing with the “shade tree techs” was always problematic because they usually returned about half of what they bought, expecting a full refund. Fry’s Electronics opened a San Marcos store right across the street from us in 2003. They weren’t much competition for us in repairing and building PCs but they were absolutely terrific at taking back “returns.” In fact it was rumored that their return lines were often longer than the checkout lines. We changed our policy to one of selling components only when we did the installation. Our returns problem disappeared overnight and Fry’s return line got even bigger.
PC upgrades were rare prior to 2010 because rapidly evolving component and applications technology required changing mostof the major components to get a significant result. Since 2010 technology has done little to improve usability for the majority of business and home users. Speed, RAM and storage requirements have remained stagnant since 2010. As a result, the sale of new PCs has fallen 40% since 2011, but the number of PCs in use has nearly doubled. That means that PCs are

By the time I was 14 I had studied Gray's Anatomy, Brain Surgery, and Advanced Anesthesia.
I had performed 13 delicate brain surgeries by the time I was 15. The fact that my patients were reluctant to undergo the surgery should not be held against me as I meant well. Had they been a bit more cooperative I'm sure some of them might have even survived the surgery. By the time I reached age 16 I decided to abandon, temporarily at least, brain surgery. I took up a new profession as part-time Christmas Tree flocker. It is seasonal.
I am considering a return to the profession of brain surgeon and have been scouting for likely candidates. Thus far, only a select few have qualified as (a) having brains, and (b) needed attention

As extended lifespan became the rule for PCs, the business of servicing, upgrading and repairing older PCs has become more important. With no tangible benefit from buying new PCs, savvy home and business owners are replacing their old PCs with fast and reliable refurbs, often saving 50% or more over the cost of new systems. Computer and monitor designs are fairly timeless so it’s nearly impossible to tell a new PC and monitor from ones 5-7 years old. With fewer new PCs and more emphasis on maintenance, repairs and upgrades, the supply side of our business also changed. Instead
of consolidating shipments of components to reduce shipping costs we now plan truckloads of refurb PCs for inventory. While we still stock common components like RAM and hard drives etc, we rely on one or two day delivery from Internet vendors for non-stocked components. Another big change in the way we do business is that increasingly on site service as an adjunct to our in house PC sales and service. Business and home networks no longer require the $100/hr plus service of “Microsoft Certified Network Engineers” to install and maintain simple network and security systems. Our techs, at much lower rates, can often accomplish more in less time than the contractors. It may not be “brain Surgery” but a lot of folks still need our help.
