Believe it or not, the correct answer is “A.” Dan Bullock (Dec. 21 1953 - June 7, 1969) was a United States Marine and the youngest U. S. serviceman killed in action during the Vietnam War, dying at the mere age of 15.

Bullock was born in Goldsboro, North Carolina. He lived in North Carolina until he was 11. When his mother died, he and his younger sister, Gloria, moved to Brooklyn, New York to live with their father and his wife.

At only age 10 when most children have absolutely no clue what they want to become in life, Danny Bullock already knew.

And he knew with a rare, deep conviction.

His goal was never childlike in wavering from a cowboy to wearing a Superman cape.

Little Danny was precociously different.

And strangely beyond the maturity of a 10-year-old.

Simply put, he only wanted one thing in life: His dream was to become a U. S. Marine in the defense of his sacred country. To defend our freedom. Our flag. His fellow Americans.

She loves a clean house so I splurged a bit and bought her a whole box of vacuum cleaner bags.

I always try to be both kind and considerate.

When he turned 14 years old, he had a secret plan.

He secretly altered the year on his birth certificate to show he was born on December 21, 1949.

And it worked like a charm!

He “slipped through the bureaucratic cracks” during a time of haste, confusion, and war.

Little 14-year-old Danny Bullock, a mere child in years, was processed through the recruiting station, and enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps on September 18, 1968, just 3 months shy of his 15th birthday.

He was now a member of Platoon 3039 at Parris Island (in South Carolina).

Because of his young age and stillgrowing bones, at first he struggled through the physical regimen of boot camp, but was able to do so with the help of one of his fellow recruits.

He graduated from boot camp on December 10, 1968 (just 11 days short of his 15th birthday)..

In time, Private first class Danny Bullock boarded a U. S. military plane and arrived in the Republic of Vietnam on May 18, 1969, and was assigned as a rifleman in 2nd Squad, 2nd Platoon, Company F, 2nd Battalion 5th Marines, 1st Division.

He was stationed at An Hoa Combat Base, Vietnam.

Less than a month later, on June 7, 1969, Bullock and three other Marines were occupying a bunker near the base airstrip when a People’s Army of Vietnam Sapper Unit attacked the base at night, throwing a satchel charge into the bunker killing all four Marines, including Bullock who was only 15 years old.

After his body was returned stateside, his gravesite did not even have a marker.

Eventually, a veteran’s marker was officially provided in 2000.

(Retrieved archive records, PFC Dan Bullock Foundation, Inc.) Little Danny Bullock’s true age and life story was leaked and soon emblazoned in newspapers, magazines, and television newscasts – both here and abroad in multiple languages.

His lifelong secret, since age 10, was finally exposed for all the world to know.

Thirty four years later, on June 7, 2003, on the exact day of his death (June 7) a section of Lee Avenue in Brooklyn, New York, where little Danny Bullock had lived and played since age 11, was renamed in his honor.

Memorial Ceremony every June, on “Dan Bullock Avenue” which carries his childhood name today.

Less than two years ago today, in 2019, a North Carolina State Historical Marker honoring his life was erected near his childhood home in Goldsboro, North Carolina, the place of his birth.

Ever since he was a small child, Dan Bullock knew he wanted to become only three things in his life when he grew up: either a pilot, a police officer, or a U. S. Marine.

As a 10-year-old, he eventually narrowed it down to U. S. Marine.

Keep in mind, the astonishing fact that Danny never grew up to adulthood.

He was still a mere child when he died fulfilling his dream of being a U. S. Marine.

Even if that dream meant that he had to lie about his age.

Even if that dream meant he might die in defense of his country as he read many already had.

His life’s dream would prove to be a most unlikely true story in the annals of warfare.

Imagine: A heroic child soldier in combat.

"Thank-You's" Are In Order One day last week a terrible, stressful thing happened - I was on my way to the automobile dealership, heading north on Broadway at Mission Avenue, when my car stalled, totally out, no power anywhere! A couple of cars stopped and the drivers asked if they could help, for which I appreciated their concerns. But two people did come up that could help! The "ThankYou's" go to these two special people - Adrian (don't have his last name), but he was driving a Staples truck, and an Escondido Police Officer, Kevin Garcia, who stayed with me until the tow truck picked up the car and headed to the dealership. Both of these young men were so professional, very helpful, and concerned about me and what happened to the car. I really do appreciate everything they did to

HEROIC U. S. CHILDREN “SECRETLY” SERVED & DIED IN THE U. S. MILITARY DEFENDING AMERICA! For the record, below is a brief overview of young children who served and died in the U. S. military in the defense of our country. It is by no means complete.

Much of what you are about to read is vastly unknown and, therefore, these young heroic fallen soldiers remain sadly forgotten and unheralded for their valor and ultimate sacrifice for America.

All but forgotten . . . until now.

May this exclusive storyline ensure these heroic children are honored this Memorial Day.

12-YEAR-OLD WWII U. S. NAVY SERVICEMAN, CALVIN LEON GRAHAM. During World War II, an American 12-year-old boy named Calvin Leon Graham (April 3, 1930–November 6, 1992) successfully enlisted and served to

Carlsbad Republican Women Support Medical Community and First Responders - On May 10th, members of the Carlsbad Republican Women “Caring for America” team delivered baskets of goodies to the doctors and nurses in the Tri-City Medical Center ICU unit and to the Emergency Room staff. In addition, baskets were delivered to the Carlsbad Police, Senior Volunteer Police Patrol, and the Carlsbad Fire Department. The CRWF “Caring for America” program proudly supports worthwhile causes and organizations in the community through service and donations.

Take Off Pounds Sensibly; Now Meeting Person-to-Person - TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) groups are almost everywhere all across the United States and Canada. Local Chapters vary in size and numbers by community. The local group is in Escondido, and we meet on Friday mornings from 9:30am till 11am at the Trinity Episcopal Church, 845 Chestnut St., in the meeting room at the back of the church.

I joined a TOPS Chapter in January 2019, and by January 2020 I lost approximately 42 pounds sensibly.

When little Calvin Leon Graham first heard about the ruthless and unprovoked attack on Pearl Harbor, the young child was so angry that he lied about his age to fight the enemy!

Calvin was born in Canton, Texas, and was attending elementary school in Houston before he decided to join the U. S. Navy, after his father had died and his mother had remarried and he heard the Godawful news that enemy Japanese aircraft bombed his beloved America.

His story is so remarkable that it continues to shock and galvanize historians today.

At only age 12, he lied about his age and successfully enlisted in the U. S. Navy in Houston, Texas on August 15, 1942.

The child was sent to U. S. Navy boot camp right here in Point Loma, San Diego.

After six weeks of basic training, the 12-year-old was sent to Pearl Harbor at Oahu, Hawaii, where he was assigned to the USS South Dakota battleship (BB57).

The South Dakota departed Pearl Harbor on October 16, 1942 with adolescent, Calvin Leon Graham onboard!

Ca 0116 returned to holding meetings in person after they were suspended 14 months ago. The positive results of meeting once a week is shared by everyone to help encourage members in their desire to lose weight sensibly. Even shy people join in the comradery to reinforce a member’s commitment to weight control. I know there are a whole lot of people who, just like me, turned to food to calm their boredom, anxiety and isolation.

This is an invitation to join our group in our weekly Friday morning meetings; whatever weight you gained or just decided you want to lose, now is your opportunity to commit to that goal. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at wceichler@live.com.

Here is the reason I am so excited to be back to meeting: Wow and Yeah, I didn’t get Covid-19 and now I’ve been vaccinated, what a relief.

What I did manage to acquire was #’s (Covid-19 pounds) 20 to be exact. The past year of inactivity and confinement put me in a state of boredom and a desire to try creative cooking and baking. A really big problem arose; I needed someone to sample and comment on my creations; not having a readily available taster and critic, the honor and privilege became mine. Now that I’ve perfected my skills and started enjoying the results of my culinary master pieces, a reality started to sink in; my clothes are shrinking, they don’t fit like they should. This is where people need to help peoHis battleship participated in the Battle of the Santa Cruz whereby the entire crew received a Navy Unit Commendation for action.

But his greatest heroic service was yet to come!

On the night of November 14-15, 1942, 12-year-old Graham was wounded during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, where he served as a loader for a 40-mm anti-aircraft gun and was hit numerous times by enemy shrapnel.

Although he was wounded repeatedly by ongoing shrapnel body wounds, he insisted in helping to rescue his wounded shipmates by aiding, pulling, and dragging them to safety.

For a mere child to persevere under such painful and punishing injuries is most extraordinary and far beyond the norm of maturity and self-sacrifice in light of his chronological age!

He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart Medal for heroically saving human lives, although he was physically suffering deep shrapnel wounds, himself, in the process.

He also received another Navy Unit Commendation.

But finally, his secret was revealed.

Calvin Graham’s mother revealed his true age after he traveled to his

grandmother’s funeral in Texas. He was finally released after his sister also revealed his real age and then threatened to contact the newspapers regarding the entire scandal.

Although he tried to return to his beloved ship, he was given a Dishonorable Discharge from the U. S. Navy in April of 1943, two days short of his 13th birthday.

Thirty five years later, in 1978, he was finally given an “Honorable Discharge” for his valor and courageous service in the U. S. Navy, even though he served illegally as a minor.

With the approval of President Jimmy Carter (and later with President Bill Clinton), the U. S. Congress officially reinstated all of his service medals – except for his Purple Heart for being wounded.

The childlike part of him always wanted to touch, hold, and embrace his Purple Heart.

But it was denied him for being wounded illegally and unauthorized, as a mere child.

He died without ever having his cherished Purple Heart returned to him – to once again embrace. The very medal he was physically wounded for, and almost died for in the process.

The Paper 21-Year-Old Man Arrested on Suspicion of Assaulting Woman Walking Dogs in Vista

Detectives with the Vista Sheriff’s Station arrested Luis Enrique Ambriz Jimenez (DOB11/09/1999) on Thursday, May 20.

He will be booked at Vista Detention Facility on charges of kidnapping with the intent to commit robbery, false imprisonment and attempted robbery.

The woman’s detailed description of the man helped detectives in developing leads in the case. Once the suspect was identified, the victim picked him out in a lineup leading to his arrest. Detectives served a search warrant in his home and items were found related to the incident.

The incident happened on Wednesday, May 19, just before noon on a trail at Buena Vista Park on South Melrose Drive. A woman told deputies she was walking when a man attacked her as she passed him by on the trail. She says the man tried to pull her into the bushes and they fell on the ground. The male suspect got up and ran away from the area. The woman had scratches from the fall.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department would like to thank the public and the media for calling in tips and helping us get the word out on this case.

San Diego County supervisors unanimously approved a proposal to "reimagine and restructure'' the Escondido-based San Pasqual Academy, which educates and houses foster youth, in a manner consistent with state and federal law.

Supervisors also directed Helen Robbins Meyer, county chief administrative officer, to work with stakeholders to ensure that SPA also serves young people with different needs, to look at ways to serve alumni and explore the possibility of transitional housing, and enter into agreement with the state for an extension until June 2022 that also allows for a transition.

Bicyclist Hit, Killed, in Oceanside

A bicyclist was hit and killed by a driver in Oceanside early Saturday morning, according to the Oceanside Police Department.

I have known you and her for a third of my life, and most of my professional career.

But I keep it together. My superhuman amazing technicians have put the catheter in. My support staff from reception to assistants have done all the paperwork. Trust me they may not show it but their hearts are breaking for you. They have been there. They know. And they know you and care about you too.

The department says the crash happened just before 2 a.m. at Oceanside Boulevard and Beverly Glen Drive.

After arriving at the scene, officers saw an unresponsive man lying west of the intersection. The man was later pronounced dead.

Based on evidence and statements from witnesses, police say the cyclist was hit by a vehicle traveling west on Oceanside Boulevard.

“The vehicle was seized and the driver arrested pending a driver impairment investigation,” police say.

The bicyclist hasn’t been identified

Baseball Fans Happy: Padres Playing Well, Petco Park Fully Open on June 17th

Following the State of California’s update today on their full reopening plan for June 15th, the Padres are excited to announce that Petco Park will open to 100% capacity for the first time in over a year and a half beginning with the Thursday, June 17th game against the Cincinnati Reds at 5:40 p.m.

Billed as “San Diego’s Opening “Day,” starved baseball fans are expected to fill the stadium.

And I have the needle in the pocket of my white coat. The same pocket that was always full of treats for him. I take a deep yoga breath and come into the room. Gotta stay strong now.......

She’s giving me that sweet look she always does, the one that is followed by puppy kisses and a glance at the cookie jar. But she is too weak now. She is ready. You are not. I am not. But this has to happen because we love her too much to let her suffer.

She would keep going as long as we asked her too. But we can’t ask her to anymore. It’s not fair to her.

I wish our human hearts could be so giving all the time. I wish I could be the person my dog thinks I am. I wish I wish I wish I could find a way for them to live forever.

But I don’t have those magical powers. I am just a vet.

So we kiss him back, not much left of his body that still works, but that old tail wags, just enough that I lose my strength on the inside but I try not to cry. Gotta stay strong.

I have to say how pleased and excited I am that our publication, The Paper, is adding more literary 'muscle' -- most recently with Sean Dietrich who has this week's cover story "Soldier" (5/20/21). Along with Sam Lowe (who I adore) and Michele Ivy Davis (whose prose is like a breath of fresh air), well I think you get the gist of how proud, pleased, and so looking forward to seeing more of their work.

And by the way, with the irresistible color ad of Mike's BBQ in The Paper I just had to spoil myself by feasting on their sumptuous ribs (and baked beans) along with a good friend of mine. So much

The door closes behind you and I don’t know if you hear this, but I sob hysterically into your pets ear.

She is gone, he will be missed, and you have to face what I know will be one of the hardest parts of today.

Please know that I know how you feel. As you leave the clinic I just wish with every fibre of my being that you never had to face that. I wish they could live forever.

It actually appears that life, slowly but ever so surely, is beginning to return to near normal. Vaccinations up, Covid cases down, hospitalizations dropping, as are deaths.

death, his Purple Heart was finally reinstated and presented to his surviving wife on June 21, 1994, at his funeral.

Amongst quiet sobs and tears of onlookers, the elusive Purple Heart was officially presented to his widow Mary Graham, by the U. S. Secretary of the Navy himself, John Dalton, at Arlington, Texas. Along with apologies from the U. S. Navy for taking it away from him when he was alive.

She sadly wept, looking down at his coveted medal which he was never allowed to hold in later life. The Purple Heart he had won as a 12year-old child. Saving the lives of many others.

Silently, with a solemn gesture, his widow slowly raised his Purple Heart skyward, with both hands fully extended, as if presenting it -at long last – back to its rightful owner.

That little 12-year-old boy, who once proudly sacrificed himself through deep wounds and almost died saving the lives of many in the service of his country, was sadly laid to rest.

As a military vet, myself, who served my fours years here and overseas, I only ask:

Whatever you do in life, use your freedom responsibly.

Just don’t burn my country down.

She remains sacred to me.

And I’ve taken the military oath and lifelong vow to defend her at all costs.

And please do not loot and burn the stores and businesses of my fellow hardworking Americans. They are innocent individuals who have nothing to do with your politics, ideologies or misplaced rage and anger. Many went bankrupt due to Covid-19 and left with small mouths to feed.

They don’t need your boot on the back of their necks as they struggle to survive.

If you truly wish to honor our soldiers who died for you on this Memorial Day, then do this: “Be the kind of American that they would feel you were worth fighting and sacrificing for.”

He is buried today at Laurel Land Memorial Park in Fort Worth, Texas.

Barry Lubin led the way up the stairway and looked around at the large crowd. Then, in a husky voice that belied his attire, he turned to his partner and said, “Just watch me. They'll laugh. They'll think you're one of us. Just don't scare any kids.”

Easy for him to say. He was accustomed to people laughing at him, especially since he was dressed as “Grandma,” a white-faced little old lady with a large red nose, wearing a 50-cent wig that had come off a mannequin that may have been used to advertise discount Army underwear and cheap dance lessons.

His partner added very little, if any, class to the duo because he was wearing a purple tuxedo, greenand-white polka dot bow tie, a badly dented top hat and scruffy old tennis shoes that appeared to be survivors of a disco dance staged in a dairy barn.

Unbeknownst to almost everyone present at the time, I was the partner, dressed like somebody going to a costume ball as a ninety-eight cent socialite shackled with a major shortage of haberdashery funds.

And carrying a large bag of unbuttered popcorn.

Being a novice in this sort of activity, I followed Lubin's instructions closely, especially when he said, “If anyone gets upset because you're throwing popcorn at them, just walk away. If they holler at you, run.” He said it with an impish grin, the kind little old ladies flash when they're about to whack you across the head with a rhinestonecovered purse because you got the last doughnut at the bakery.

Now fully warned about the perils involved with this type of occupation, I trailed Lubin into the crowd gathered in the Veterans Memorial Coliseum and became a circus clown.

The change was instant. One moment, I was a newspaper columnist suspected of joining the circus to get out of work; in the next, I was a clown. It was a magical transformation, brought about primarily by kids. They laughed. They pointed and screamed, in high

squeaky voices, “There's a clown!”

They touched the baggy jacket, bounced up and down, giggled and squirmed in childish delight while their parents took pictures of them and me.

But it wasn't just me any more. It was me being a clown in the circus and it was, and remains so to this day, one of the highlights of my tenure as a living entity.

And Lubin was right. The children didn't know who that was underneath the greasepaint and the ill-fitting costume. And probably, even if they did know, it would not have made any difference. They were at the circus and they thought I was a real clown. And for that moment, I was.

I was hobnobbing with the greatest of all fun-makers. I was consorting with the princes of laughter. And I didn't even have to run away and join the circus to be a clown. It was an assignment because The Phoenix Gazette, my employer at the time, was a sponsor of the Barnum & Bailey Circus and the editors wanted an inside scoop about life under the Big Top. When they asked if I'd agree to the task, it was with some apprehension on their part because, I suspect, they probably feared rejection on the grounds that I might consider it beneath the dignity of a columnist to participate in such a frivolous pursuit as being a circus clown. However, due to my longstanding desire to get out of the office under any circumstance, I accepted faster than a second-grader's shirtsleeve goes up to a runny nose.

So I showed up at the Coliseum and spent time with the trapeze artists, the show girls, the acrobats, the show girls, the woman and her trained dogs, the show girls, and the tightrope walkers. And the show girls. Eventually, I was introduced to Lubin, who spent about a halfhour applying the greasepaint to my face. “It's an individual thing,” he said between strokes. “Each clown develops his own face, his own act.

Wrong camera lens on eBay -can I get a refund?

When Zachary Bucholtz orders a Canon lens from eBay, he receives a Sony lens. Can he get a refund?

Q: I purchased a Sigma camera lens for my Canon cameras off of eBay. When I received the lens, it did not fit any of my cameras. I reached out to the manufacturer, which ran the serial number in its database and confirmed that the lens I received from eBay was, in fact, the Sony version of the lens, not the Canon version.

I have had numerous calls, emails, and Twitter DMs with eBay customer support. Their Money Back Guarantee states that an item that is not as described is eligible for a full refund, regardless of the seller’s return policy. This should be an open-and-shut case, as it clearly is covered by eBay's policy.

But eBay is refusing to accept my return. The company says because I initially selected “does not fit” in the return process, that this indicates “buyer remorse” and is not covered. I have provided the letter from Sigma that proves my case, and eBay still refuses to help.

I have asked to escalate my case. I have filed appeals. I have written so many emails. I’ve never felt so helpless and insignificant as a consumer. Any advice you can offer would be a huge relief. I’ve been at this for days and am not sleeping.

Can you help me get the $565 back for my lens? -- Zachary Bucholtz, Detroit A: You should be able to return the lens and receive a full refund. And you shouldn't lose sleep over this purchase.

You're right, eBay's <a href="https://www.ebay.com/help/p olicies/ebay-money-back-guarantee-policy/ebay-money-back-guarantee-policy?id=4210">Money Back Guarantee</a> is pretty straightforward and unambiguous.

It says if the item you ordered didn't arrive, is faulty or damaged, or doesn't match the listing, you'll get your money back. You claim the item didn't match the listing. You ordered a Canon-compatible lens but received a Sony lens.

Case closed, right?

I reviewed the correspondence between you and eBay. It looks like you filed two claims over several weeks. You listed several reasons for the return, which may have confused eBay and led to this problem.

There's only one reason they're not, and you can probably guess it.

I like the way your case ended. You appealed eBay's denial. It asked the merchant to respond -- and it didn't. eBay sided with you, refunding all of your money.

Can Booking.com keep my rental deposit?

Emily Radocha pays a $250 security deposit on a vacation rental through Booking.com with the understanding that she'll get it back. But she never does. Can Booking.com just keep her money?

Q: I recently booked a reservation on Booking.com at Pelican Stay, a furnished apartment building in Portland's Pearl District. I paid the owner a security deposit of $250, which was to be returned to me no longer than 30 days after my stay.

After 30 days I checked with Booking.com to find out what happened to the refund since I hadn't received it. Booking.com tried to help me but has also had no success.

I would like my $250 security deposit back. Booking.com has suggested that I file a credit card dispute, but I can't do that since I'm past the 90-day window for a dispute. Can you help? -- Emily Radocha, Kalamazoo, Mich.

A: You should have received your refund by now. And if the apartment owner or manager couldn't send it back, Booking.com or your credit card should have been able to help.

Slavery is Not an American Creation

Human slavery goes back to beyond Biblical times … probably to prehistoric eras. Those Egyptian pyramids weren’t built by union labor, nor were edifices of worship by the Mayan, Inca, and Aztecs. Slavery may have raised its ugly head in the U.S. during the 17th century, but it was prevalent around the globe for centuries before.

In America, slavery that had occurred during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries today remains a contentious issue and plays a major role in the history and evolution of the U.S. Our distasteful human slavery triggered a revolution, a civil war, numerous civil rights movements and over the past century and well to the present, countless events of civil unrest and rioting.

In 1501, the Spanish colonists were the first Europeans to use African slaves here in the New World on the islands of Hispaniola and Cuba. In 1519, Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés brought the first slaves to Mexico. A labor shortage there led to African slaves being imported as they were not susceptible to smallpox. Slavery and indentured servitude in the United States became legal institutions, primarily of African-Americans.

Many European white men and women came to North America during the 17th and 18th centuries as “indentured servants,” a form of slavery. Indentured servitude was a time-definite court sentence to satisfy a debt or minor crime. One of England’s infamous examples of slavery was the penal colony of Australia, usually a life sentence.

But even indentured servitude had its limits. After 1640, in the colony of Virginia white planters started to ignore the expiration of indentured contracts and keep their servants as slaves “for life.” However, in a 1655 slavery challenge a court ruled that a black man could not be granted ownership of another black man.

This was the first instance of a judicial determination concerning slavery in the 13 English Colonies. The court held that a person who had committed no crime could not be held in servitude for life. During the 18th and 19th centuries, after the U.S. gained independence from the British and before the end of the American Civil War, slavery had been practiced in British America from early colonial days and was legal in all 13 Colonies at the time of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.

After the American Revolution, the United States became polarized over the issue of slavery, geographically divided by the Mason-Dixon survey line which separated free Pennsylvania from slave states Maryland and Delaware. During the Thomas Jefferson administration, Congress prohibited any more importation of slaves, effective as of 1808, although smuggling of slaves continued. Domestic slave trading continued at a rapid pace, driven by labor demands for the development of cotton plantations in the southern states. The new territories acquired from Britain, France, and Mexico were the subject of major political compromises.

By 1850, the cotton-growing southern states were threatening to secede from the Union. Those new states attempted to extend slavery into the new western territories (Texas, Missouri, Kansas and Nebraska) to keep a balance of political power in Washington, D.C. They were only partially successful.

The treatment of slaves in the United States varied widely depending on conditions, times, and places. Slaves were punished by whipping, shackling, hanging, beating, burning, mutilation, branding and imprisonment. Treatment was usually harsher on large plantations, which were often managed by overseers and owned by absentee slaveholders.

More than 1 million slaves were sold from the upper Southern states, which had a surplus of labor, and taken to the Deep South in a forced migration, splitting up many families. New communities of AfricanAmerican culture were developed in the Deep South, and the total slave population eventually reached 4 million. In the 19th century, proponents of slavery admitted, but often defended, the institution as a "necessary evil."

The largest religious denominations, the Baptist, Methodist, and Presbyterian churches, split over the slavery issue into regional organizations of the North and South. When President Abraham Lincoln won the 1860 election on a Republican platform of halting the expansion of slavery, one-third of Southern families owned slaves. As such, seven states broke away to form the Confederate States of America. The first six states to secede, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Florida and Louisiana held the greatest number of slaves.

Civil war broke out often pitting brother against brother. Once the war ended the issue of slavery became illegal and all slaves were freed.

While the institution of slavery officially ended with the American Civil War, the controversy accompanying the subject continues to haunt us. Today’s argument in U.S. society continues with no end in sight. Historical revisionists wants to keep the subject front and center at all levels of education and society. On the other hand, abolitionists want to forget and move on. Neither will win. It’s an argument that will never be settled and it will continue to divide our nation.

We are blessed to live in a County that is home to many beaches and pools, which we can enjoy all year long. Unfortunately, along with the beauty and fun of swimming, tragedy can strike. Drowning is among the leading causes of deaths for children under the age of five.

My family has experienced the tragedy of a loved one drowning and I want to do all I can to make sure no family has to experience that same pain.

In 2020, data showed that in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic more children in San Diego County were rescued after almost drowning in pools, beaches, and other bodies of water than in the past five years.

According to the Center for Disease control, 79% of children in households with income less than $50,000 have little-to-no swimming ability.

There are ways to help prevent drownings. Formal swimming lessons reducing the likelihood of childhood drowning by 88%. This is why at our last Board of Supervisors meeting, I partnered with my colleague, Supervisor Vargas, to develop a drowning prevention outreach campaign with up

His proudest accomplishment however, was his family. He and Ethel raised three daughters, and enjoyed a wonderful close relationship with their grandchildren and great grand children. He was also a mentor and father figure to many over the years. He never met a stranger, and could strike up a conversation with anyone. Recently, the city council handed out anniversary awards to the various members of the city staff. Typically, we hand out 5-year anniversary coins and at the 20-year mark we read the person being honored bio. I’ve done this before, but each time I am always so impressed with the quiet dedication of our city staff.

The council gets the credit (and the blame) for the success or failure of the city.

But what we do is set policy. The hard work is done by these behind the scene professionals who treat the city as if it were their home. I want to give them a huge shout out this week. They never really get enough credit for what they do.

Sometimes they are labeled as bureaucrats, but if you ever see them work, you know that is not true and a very unfair knock. So as a veteran I am often thanked for my service, if you see a city employee, I would ask you to thank them for their service. They deserve it.

The new Earthquake Warning California is the country’s first publicly available, statewide, free mobile app warning system. The mobile app could give California residents crucial seconds to take cover in advance of an earthquake. Through the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, the warning system uses ground motion sensors from across the state to detect earthquakes before humans can feel them. The early warning system can then notify Californians to “Drop, Cover and Hold On” in advance of an earthquake. “There is nothing more painful to me at this stage in my life than to walk down the street and hear footsteps... then turn around and see somebody white and feel relieved.”

These words are obviously racist by today’s “Woke” standards. Yet these now famous words were spoken by non-other than the Rev Jesse Jackson. Rev Jackson was pained that he was forced to recognize the fact that a black person was more likely to be a threat to him than a white person. It was a racist judgment. He was using the statistical fact that a black person is more likely to be a threat than a white person

Rev. Jackson’s reaction to this incident exposes the fallacy of the “Woke” movement’s passionate embrace of “identity politics.” Rev Jackson’s judgment that black was more dangerous than White was influenced by where he was. In the city, his relief was justified because black criminality is a serious problem in major American cities. Had Rev Jackson been walking down a rural country lane in West Virginia he might have been greatly relieved to discover the footsteps belonged to a black man instead of a potentially “redneck” White man. The point here is that Rev Jackson’s ‘racist” judgments were not really based on skin color but on the prevailing cultural environment associated with the skin color.

Post Civil War African Americans who stayed in the South and those who moved to the industrial cities of the North remained isolated from White American culture in segregated communities. African Americans had evolved their own “American” culture over centuries of isolation.

White local and state governments in the North and South ignored black communities when it came to policing and code enforcements.

BASKETBALL CARDS

There is some controversy over the first basketball card.

Some collectors believe strongly that it was an 1899 Enameling College colors card, but most collectors feel that the very first card was a Murad tobacco card in 1910, followed—distantly, it would appear—by basketball cards in the 1933 Sport Kings set.

But the first established set of basketball cards appeared in 1948. It was issued by Bowman and featured George Mikan, who was voted by the Associated Press as the greatest basketball player in the first half of the twentieth century. He was a center for Chicago’s DePaul University, and was the most dominant player of his era.

Then he starred for the Lakers when they were based in Minneapolis. Mikan’s Bowman card, #69, is worth upwards of $2,000, depending, naturally, on condition.

Most collectors, however, are more likely to own cards from the 1957-1958 Topps set, and the 1961-1962 Fleer set.

That’s because many of the baby boomer collectors are more familiar with the players who made up those sets. For example, the most valuable card in the Topps 1957-1958

set is of the incomparable Bill Russell of the Boston Celtics. That card, #77, generally costs between $1,000 and $2,000. His renowned teammate, Bob Cousy, is also part of that set, as is the St. Louis Hawks’ power forward Bob Pettit.

Because the Topps set was the first one issued in many years, it contains the highly valued rookie cards of the superstars who had been dominating the game for several seasons.

The same claim can be made for the Fleer set of 1961-1962. One unique characteristic of that set is that there were often two cards for many of the stars. There would be the head shot and an action photo.

Personally, I prefer to see their faces clearly, but other collectors go for the action. That’s not unusual. Ask the same question to two collectors and you may well get two different answers.

Altogether, the Fleer set contains sixty-six cards, with twenty-two of those action photographs.

New stars appeared in the Fleer offering, including Jerry West, Oscar Robertson, and Elgin Baylor.

But the biggest star—in every sense of the word—was Wilt Chamberlain. In fact, when my mother handed over a bag full of that Fleer set that I had collected in childhood, I was hoping and praying that there would be a card with

The long overdue Voting, Civil and Housing Rights Acts of the 1960s allowed Blacks who could afford it, the opportunity to leave crime infested center cities. Professionals, businessmen and other with means, along with their families, abandoned the Black ghettoes leaving behind those trapped by poverty and welfare and with few role models for the young with the exception of successful career criminals.

Today, fifty years later 70% (30 million) of African Americans live in mostly black inner city neighborhoods where crime tolerant and antiwhite attitudes persist. The remaining 30 percent (about 13 million) live outside city centers in mixed neighborhoods across America.

These are the African Americans that we, the North County Readers of THE PAPER, see every day in our schools, Gyms, at work, restaurants churches social and civic clubs and our business. In everything but skin color they are indistinguishable from us.

Luckily, there was. It was a bit offcenter, but it was there, along with a Robertson and a Baylor card. What a bonanza! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I really owe my mother for saving those cards. That Chamberlain Fleer 1961-1962 rookie card, #8, can fetch up to $1,000.

The Jerry West, #43, and the Oscar Robertson, #36, are worth several hundred dollars apiece.

But make no bones about it, the most collectible basketball card of all time is of the great Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls. A pristine copy of Jordan’s 1986-1987 Fleer rookie card is the Holy Grail of hoops cards. One of those rookie cards was submitted to Beckett Grading Services, which awarded it a grade 10. Virtually perfect, in other words. Now, are you ready for this. That card, which a collector bought for $6,300, went on to sell for $100,000, easily breaking the previous sales record for a single basketball card by more than $20,000.

Jordan’s Fleer rookie card has always been a treasure, but selling it for six figures certainly elevates it to legendary status, as befits the high-flying wonder from the University of North Carolina.

Now, let’s power down just a bit and look at basketball card sets at the local and regional levels, such as the ones from Essex Hot Dogs, Kahn’s Wieners, and Royal Dessert.

We understand because we too were once young and dumb, but we did survive it.

So as “Woke” cancel culture, political correctness and white supremacy remedies rise to ever new and more hilarious levels, just remember to keep our mantra in mind and never hesitate to mutter it softly under your breath or shout it out at the top of your lungs “WOKE IS A JOKE.”

One was a steamer trunk bit; the other was the infamous stuffed car crowd-pleaser in which a Volkswagen Beetle enters the ring and seemingly disgorges hundreds, even thousands, of clowns in a scenario not unlike those occasions when distant relatives unexpectedly pop in for dinner.

But first, we had to get rid of the popcorn and so we did, spilling it on some, tossing it at others, pretending to be sloppy eaters whose attempts to ingest popcorn were duplications of an infant being fed a spoonful of spinach-and-liver puree. We were good popcorn throwers, so good that nobody got upset, especially the bald man who agreed that the kernels I rubbed on his head might actually grow hair.

Then it came time for participating in the acts. In the first, a clown named Sergei was inside the trunk when it was wheeled into the ring.

When it stopped, Sergei fell out and made scurrilous remarks that I, along with Lubin and several other of my greasepainted associates, were responsible for kidnapping him and shoving him into the trunk.

We staged a phony argument which ended when Sergei allegedly bopped me. He didn't really bop me; he merely swung close to my head and, as Lubin had instructed me, I clapped my hands while falling backwards so it would sound like a “smack!” and the crowd would think I had been assaulted. The fall didn't hurt me but there was cause for concern because we were in the same ring as the one occupied by elephants earlier. If there's anything a clown hates, it's explaining why there's elephant poop on his polka dot bow tie.

Next, the VW Beetle roared into the ring and screeched to a halt. There were nine clowns and a fake giraffe inside the car and several others running alongside. I was among the runners because cramming nine clowns and a fake giraffe into a VW Bug requires substantially more training than the minimal amount bestowed upon me. The doors opened and clowns popped out, then they sneaked around to the other side and got back in, giving the appearance that the car was actually a breeding ground for small adults dressed in funny costumes.

My job was to open the door and look surprised, which didn't take much acting because I had no idea how the actual participants were able to contort and pretzelize themselves in the manner I was witnessing.

Finally, all the clowns got out of the car and we were ushered out of the ring to be replaced by a trained dog

For one fleeting moment, I actually considered asking about joining the circus as a clown. But reality quickly set in. If I quit my job, I'd have to give up freebies, which were the newspaper columnist's life blood.

The allure of life in the three rings rapidly faded if it meant an existence in which I'd be condemned to paying for my own beer.

I guess Booking.com just sees itself as the middleman, and that you have to take up any disputes directly with the merchant. Maybe next time you should consider working with a travel advisor who can advocate for you.

County. Previously known as Groceries4Good, the new program, called Feeding Patients, provides a drive-through food pick up at different locations for patients and their families.

Feeding San Diego will use its vast connections to source and distribute food to help this high-risk population and pick back up on the work started by Groceries 4Good.

Because its food distributions are contactless and drive-through, patients and their families can feel safe when receiving the food.

“Recognizing that the need to provide groceries to our cancer fighting community is much larger than originally imagined, we look forward to the continuation and growth of the Groceries4Good program as Feeding Patients,” said Dan Shea, CEO of Feeding San Diego. “Feeding San Diego serves people in need all over the county, from students to seniors, and we are honored to be able to provide help to those who are battling for their health.”

Feeding Patients has already held two distributions this month, and future Feeding Patient pickups will be hosted specifically for participants of the program. Some of the currently planned upcoming North County distribution locations include The Shoppes at Carlsbad on May 26; Palomar College, Fallbrook on June 11; and California State University, San Marcos on June 19.
