Ever since we discarded our obsolete 2017 calendars for up-to-date 2018 versions, some things on our social agenda haven’t changed with time. As we settle into mid-2018, a number of national polls seem to consistently reflect a steadfast view among Americans that hasn’t changed one iota these past few years: mainly that the majority of Americans still do not take a particular shine to what is known as “political correctness.”

would play fair and just step aside, for one moment, and let the people speak their own true minds – unfiltered and uncensored -- well, we all might just learn something new from time-to-time. After all, if true democratic ideals are allowed to prevail then we must allow the American people their freedom of speech regarding political correctness. And therein lies the rub.
Freedom of Speech and Political Correctness have found themselves to be strange bedfellows. In other
words, one’s freedom of speech to openly voice opinions may not, in reality, be acceptable – but even punishable – under the guidelines of political correctness. So say the majority of Americans today. In steadily increasing numbers.
In a recent survey across America, 72% of Americans today agree that: “Political correctness has silenced discussions society needs to have.” Out of that lion’s share of 72%, a hefty 58% of those Americans went so far as to state that they even have: “Political views that they are now
even afraid to share.”
Especially in the workplace.
Despite their guarantee under the First Amendment to the U. S. Constitution to freely voice nonviolent opinions, the majority of Americans polled say they: “Keep some political beliefs to themselves in fear of not abiding by political correctness.” Less than 9 months ago, on August 22, 2017, The Washington Times reported: 66% of All Americans Now Fear Speaking Their Minds in

a Politically Correct Nation.” Today, midway through 2018, that majority of opinion has spiked even higher.
When push comes to shove, most Americans choose their right to free speech over political correctness. Just a few weeks ago, a 2018 U. S. poll revealed a shocking 85% of all Americans surveyed openly and strongly stated that they: “Believe that free speech is more important than political correctness today.” Political correctness covers a wide spectrum of arenas: politics, religion, gender, gay rights, women’s rights, ethnicity, physical and mental disabilities, to name just a few examples. Like it or not, political correctness deeply involves you, and most other sentient beings breathing air. If you disagree, try saying politicallyincorrect words and phrases at your workplace and see how long you stay actively employed. And become a social pariah.
The concept of political correctness has been around forever. It just had different names and phraseology, such as ‘polite speech’ within a ‘polite society’ and having a ‘civil tongue.’ Today, political correctness is broadly defined as: “Language, behavior,

Celebrated American film and stage actor, Hal Holbrook, has strong feelings about political correctness: “I hate it. It causes us to lie silently instead of saying what we think.” He is not alone.
When grandpa was growing up he often referred to the homeless as “tramps,” or “hobos,” and sanitation engineers as “garbage men,” and people with disabilities as “handicapped” and referred to many as “boy.” Today, such toxic pronouns and adjectives carry explosive reprisals for any user, whether they intended to insult or not.
What initially started out as a good idea for peaceful harmony among our species – somehow, somewhere along the way – got out of control. At least that is the growing consensus among people in the world today. Political correctness, aka PC, is one of the hottest topics embracing not only these United States of America but the world at large. Internationally-popular English movie actor, comedian, and film producer, John Cleese, states, “It started as a half-way decent idea and then it goes completely wrong and is taken ad absurdum.” For many, Cleese certainly makes a valid point. Politically-correct

They debate the subject but he insists and heads off to church. On his way to church, he thinks it over. "Maybe she's right."
So, he changes his mind and falls back on an old faithful, "Sex in Marriage."
guidelines have caused many to walk on egg shells as it continues to climb upward, reaching new political heights and seats of power. For example, the European Parliament recently introduced new proposals to actually outlaw usage of any titles which openly and arbitrarily identify a woman’s marital status, without her permission, such as ‘Miss’ and ‘Mrs.’ It also means that the French words ‘Madame’ and ‘Mademoiselle,’ the German ‘Frau’ and ‘Fraulein,’ and the Spanish ‘Senora’ and ‘Senorita’ would, likewise, be banned from usage among members of the European Parliament. According to the European Parliament spokesperson (never ‘spokesman’): “These guidelines are in favor of ‘Gender Neutral’ language.”
Meanwhile, in Great Britain, the BBC television network has officially dropped the use of the terms ‘Before Christ’ (BC) and ‘Anno Domini (AD) on one of their programs and decided that the new replacement terms ‘Before Common Era’ and ‘Common Era’ are more appropriate. And also less offensive to the various atheist groups which had made orchestrated complaints. Some major stores across the United States have already supplanted “Merry Christmas” with the more generic “Happy Holidays” so as to not offend any opposing religious or non-religious beliefs.
Repercussions from political correctness have become virtually impossible to ignore today. On March 11, 2018, Fox News reported that more than 25 cities across the United States have removed or relocated Confederate statues and monuments, due to political “incorrectness.” And according to CNN News, the removal of these “politically incorrect” civil war monuments torched a “nationwide debate over race and history.” San Diego was among those cities when it quietly removed a Confederate marker of Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederate States from 1861-1865, which was located at the Horton Plaza Park in downtown San Diego.
Whether it is truly right or wrong to remove these monuments, a recent Reuters poll showed that the majority of Americans (54%) stated that: “The monuments should remain in all public spaces so that history, good or bad, can be freely taught in public schools.” The same poll showed 27% in favor of removal, and 19% unsure if we are truly running away from our real history. As society evolves, so do attached social values regarding such combustible topics as sex, race, genderneutral terminology, ethnic profiling, transgender and gay rights, right down to the PC counterpoints and national controversy over flying the Confederate flag in America today. sy across the United States was so intense that it forced many major retailers, including Amazon and Walmart, to jump overboard – derriere over teakettle – in abandoning sales of the Confederate battle flag, also known as the “Southern Cross.” In the event that you may have been on another planet when all this controversy took place, the Confederate flag unfurled incendiary discussions of “Southern pride” vs. horrific remembrance of human slavery and discrimination. Though the Confederate flag controversy may have been a valid arena for debate, this is not always the case. Occasionally, the banner of political correctness can enter the arena of excessive, over-correctness. At least, that is the opinion of many.
For example, the University of New Hampshire issued a “University Language Guide,” which stated that the word “American” was “problematic.” Why? Well, the university’s official “Bias-Free Language Guide” said that the word “American” is offensive because it does not recognize South America and, therefore: “Assumes that the U.S. is the only country inside these two continents.”
In his New York Times best-selling book, popular comic and illustrious “Saturday Night Live” alumnus, Dennis Miller, explodes on political correction: “We’re all supposed to

Dennis Miller’s PC rant helped make his book a national best-seller, which says a lot about the pulse of America today. Much of America agrees with him. Miller then serves up fair warning to his vast readership: “Well, folks, there are a lot of different aircraft careening through the social stratosphere, and we better start working out some respectfully independent glide paths right now, or it’s gonna start getting really messy . . .” (“Dennis Miller, The Rants” book, Amazon.com) For a lot of people, it has already ‘gotten really messy.’
Such prevalent, worldwide occurrences manifesting political correctness on television, newspapers, political seats of power, university campuses, and everyday living, have caused many to resort to humor as a last resort in maintaining their sanity: “You’re not allowed to call them dinosaurs anymore,” says a character from novelist, Terry Pratchett. “You can’t say dinosaur! You have to call them ‘pre-petroleum persons.’”
Often, the ongoing political correctness craze has driven normallyfunny people like Daniel Lawrence Whitney (Larry the Cable Guy) stark raving mad. In an interview on 60 Minutes, the famed Nebraskan

You probably might call them ‘partsdropping-off challenged,’ or something like that.”
Crossing the boundaries into the forbidden netherworld of political ‘incorrectness’ can cause grave consequences. Consequences which, indiscriminately, knows not color, race, or ethnicity.
Such is the case with America’s megastar black comedian, Chris Rock. It hit Chris Rock hard, because the college circuit is not only a lucrative venue in terms of dollars, but – perhaps more importantly – the comedian relishes playing the academic circuit on a deeply personal and artistic level. But that has all changed. For Chris Rock, that part of his precious world – the trough whence he fed and recharged his creative genius -- has totally changed. In fact, it was taken away from him. And it hurt.
In a flat-out interview, the worldlypopular comedic icon let loose with both barrels: “I stopped playing colleges. It’s their unwillingness to offend anybody.” For Chris Rock, the academic campuses were hit hard by PC. Political correctness made him and other comedians overly-cautious and overly-conservative. The playing field has been changed, and so too, the rules and PC restrictions of the game. As Chris Rock sadly reflects: “You can no longer say, for example, ‘the black kid over there.’ No, it’s now – ‘the guy with the red shoes over there.’ This is not as much fun as it used to be.” Today’s comedians often feel stifled with their comedy guns only allowed to be half-cocked, depend-

On 05-15-18 at 8:53PM, Escondido police officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 600 block of Hubbard Ave. Officers arrived within minutes to discover a twenty-year-old male victim with multiple gunshot wounds. Escondido Fire Department personnel transported the victim to Palomar Medical Center for treatment. The victim sustained serious injuries, but is expected to survive.
There is no suspect description at this time. Events preceding the shooting and any possible relationship between the suspect and victim remain under investigation. No arrests have been made. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Escondido Police at 760-839-4722, or leave an anonymous tip at 760-743-TIPS (8477). Fatal Car Accident in Valley Center
Old Castle Road in Valley Center was the scene of a single vehicle crash Saturday morning that resulted in the death of the driver. Highway Patrol sources tell The
Paper that the driver of a Toyota Scion lost control of the vehicle and the car crashed into a tree around 1:45am. The driver died at the scene. Name of the deceased awaits notification of relatives. Less Sand at Oceanside Beaches
Heavy waves and El Nino storms have depleted the sand on Oceanside beaches and officials are scurrying about exploring options to replace it. Typically, the Army Corps of Engineers pour thousands of cubic yards of sand dredged from the harbor to replenish the sand.
City officials say they have plans to get some additional sand this year and more over the next five years. “Actually, we are trying to work with the Army Corps to allow us to piggyback on their contract to dredge additional sand at our expense,” City Manager Michelle Lawrence said. “We are running into some issues but we are still trying to do this during the spring.” Each year around early spring, the Corps dredges the mouth of the harbor. The agency dredged about 180,000 cubic yards of sand last

She was an amazing woman and accomplished a lot in her all too brief life. She was fun, she had a great sense of humor, she cared about people and put the care into action; she taught bible study classes at North Coast Church, the site of the service; she traveled a great deal, she spent a lot of time with her family, four gorgeous children, and a devoted, dedicated husband.

I attended a Memorial Service for Julie VanMiddlesworth Thompson, a lovely, beautiful woman who died way too early at age 50, yet another victim of that damned disease, cancer.
And so we went to her Memorial Service . . . a joyful celebration of her life. Yes, of course there were some tears . . . but there was also
In 2013, the city set aside $650,000 to for sand replenishment. That money is still available but a combination of red tape and permit problems. Mayor Peter Weiss says more than 200,000 cubic yards of sand could be placed as far south as Seagaze Drive. A separate five-year permit was approved by the state Coastal Commission earlier this month allowing Oceanside to bring in “opportunistic” sand from other sites, such as construction projects.
The permit will allow the city to deposit as much as 150,000 cubic yards of sand a year.
A half-mile stretch of beach south of Tyson Street virtually disappeared in 2012 when it was washed away by winter storms, leaving only baseball sized stones. The following year, the Corps was unable to deposit sand too far south of the pier because of grunion sightings. The agency’s dredging permit doesn’t allow it to disturb grunion nesting areas.
The profound element of the Memorial Service came with the recognition that all she had done, all she had accomplished, all the family and friends she had gathered unto her . . . represented a legacy. Actions and deeds that are remembered today and will be remembered forever.
And then I thought . . “I’m approaching the end of my life cycle. I was put on this planet for a purpose. What was that purpose? What is there left for me to do that will become a legacy I can leave behind?”
I’ve done a few good things of which I am proud . . . founded the NCYSA (North County Youth Soccer Association), founded Los Cablleros de Aventura (a program to divert Latino kids away from gangs - a tremendous success for the six years I headed it up), headed up the Opertion Hero Kiwanis program for about 10 years, in which we recognized Wounded Warriors for their contribution to their nation.
Something rather profound happened to me last Friday.
This was her third battle; she won the first two, moving into remission. When it returned for a third time she was simply too weak to fight yet another battle and slowly, and painfully, wound up succumbing. Her family and friends, and me, felt so totally helpless. We could do nothing to relieve her pain or to help her in her final journey.

I’m not sure I’ve ever listened to a better eulogy. I’m not sure how he held up giving it . . . I’m afraid I would have broken down several times. I admit to shedding a tear or two as I listened to him describe his lovely wife.
But I still feel empty. I feel as though there is something waiting for me to do. Something by which I can form a legacy.
I don’t know what it is yet but I am thinking heavily on it, hoping that in the years I have remaining I can fulfill whatever destiny the Big Boss had in mind for me when he allowed me entry on to this planet. I have coffee often with my dear friend, Pastor Dick Huls. During those coffees Dick and I solve all of the world’s problems and leave the coffee

No more pulling the trigger on hardcore issues, such as race, gender, or working ‘blue’ without censorship -especially on mainstream television. And now PC is cultivating in a growing number of college campuses. With college and university campuses hit hard with political correctness, there now exists – as never before -- a very real possibility of Chris Rock and others of his ilk, to be booed off stage if they disregard these new generational PC standards. When interviewed by Frank Rick, of New York Magazine, the normallyiconoclastic and fearless Chris Rock confessed: “It’s scary.”
The challenge, the vigor, the strength of taboo material seems no longer there. The fun and the challenge have evaporated. For many standup comedians, it is now like playing tennis with the net down.
For those comics who work blue in various adult comedy clubs and uncensored HBO specials, PC is open season for their blunderbuss to take aim at. They poke fun at political correctness by mockery. “How do we speak about women and be politically correct?” inquires one male standup. “Well, she is not a babe or a chick – she’s a breasted
American.”
Waiting for the laughter to subside, he continues launching further mortar attacks on PC restrictions: “She is not easy – she is horizontally accessible. Oh, and she is not dumb – she is a detour off the information superhighway!” Finally, he adds: “And one last thing folks, she is not horny – she is sexually focused.”
Not to be outgunned, the women comedians downsize the male egos with their own inimitable puns, all within the guidelines of political correctness, of course. This time, they turn the tables on their male comic counterparts with a PC menu of their own titled: How to Speak to Men. “He is not a bad dancer, okay – he is overly Caucasian! And listen, don’t call him a falling-down-drunk! He just becomes ‘accidentally horizontal.’” Not letting up, the male PCbashing continues, with equal time for the gals: “Oh, and he does not eat like a pig – he just suffers from ‘reverse bulimia. And one final item, he does not have a beer gut! He has developed a ‘liquid grain storage facility.’ So much for male political correctness, good night, folks!”
To others, political correctness is not a laughing matter. It is viewed as a dangerous sign of the times. Famed German-Australian photographer, Helmut Newton (1920–2004), of proud Jewish extraction, and whose celebrated photos were a mainstay
for Vogue magazine, spoke with a most serious and foreboding voice, warning us all: “The term ‘political correctness’ has always appalled me, reminding me of Orwell’s ‘Thought Police’ and fascist regimes.”
Even staunch Christian, Errol Anthony Smythe, who has a widelypopular Christian website, breaks free to claim that the emperor is, indeed, without apparel: “To be politically correct is to be someone who tells lies with a straight face without blinking. Political correctness is the art of telling lies. The thing about ‘political correctness’ is that it forces people to lie with socalled diplomacy and finesse and to tell lies about everything.” Controversial standup, Gilbert Gottfried, in Playboy magazine called the prevalence of PC, “The Apology Epidemic.”
Gottfried paints a somber picture, “Imagine if the most brilliant comedians in history were working today. They’d never stop apologizing. Charlie Chaplin would have to apologize to all the homeless people he belittled with his Little Tramp character. W. C. Fields and Dean Martin would both have to apologize to alcoholics. The Marx Brothers would have to apologize to Italians, mutes, and uptight British ladies.”

However, even within the black community itself, there is a diversion of thinking regarding this usage of the ‘n’ word which for many blacks will always remain politically incorrect, regardless who utters it, black or white.
As one black woman tweeted on the internet, “Not all blacks call whites names (I never call anyone names). Not all blacks call each other the ‘n’ word. If I hear it from anyone I take offense to it. Too ugly a word, with too ugly a history. Black people are not a monolith, in spite of attempts from both outside AND within to try and make us one. Get to know the individuals, as you probably would with someone white, and you might be surprised.” Aside from popular black rappers and black standup comedians who frequently use defaming jokes and derogatory names for each other with a measure of PC immunity, so also do other racial groups. For example, stellar Mexican-American comedians, such as Paul Rodriguez, George Lopez, and San Diego’s own home-grown comedy giant, Gabriel Iglesias, all poke fun of their ancestral roots resulting in gigantic laughs

“White men marry all the pretty Latinas,” Paul Rodriguez quips in front of a predominantly MexicanAmerican audience. “But I don’t blame you women. You want to be homeowners. If you want to rent an apartment your entire life – you marry a Mexican!” The audience is engulfed with laughter.
However, when an ‘outsider’ should join in the comedic roughhousing, as mentioned above, things can quickly become ugly, turning the performance stage into the gallows. And the audience priming the guillotine, shouting for the intruder’s head, in the name of ‘political incorrectness.’ An unpardonable sin, for so-called ‘ethnic outsiders.’ The above actually happened to English actor, producer, and worldfamous comedian, John Cleese, who tripped on an ethnic doublestandard and fell head-first into the treacherous and murky waters of political incorrectness. The highprofile condemnation was so unforgiving and so volatile that the incident succeeded in driving John Cleese into abandoning any similar future attempts. The former Monty Python star angrily called the PC culture “condescending.” Later, before a network television audience, John Cleese gave reason for completely stopping race-related jokes after audiences were angered and insulted over his jokes about Mexicans in his routine.
Cleese stated: “Make jokes about Swedes and Germans and French and English and Canadians and Americans, why can’t we make jokes about Mexicans? Is it because they are so feeble that they can’t look after themselves? It’s very, very condescending there.” Between the polarity of extremes, therein lies the underbelly of everyday society. Many claim PC ‘overcorrects’ us into a meek, submissive shell of a tortoise. For many, PC has veered greatly out of control.
Case in point, Jay Leno, of “The Tonight Show” fame, confesses a true-life account of political correctness gone haywire. As Jay Leno explains: “I’ll give you an example. We had college interns visit the show’s studio. During the last year of the show, one of the interns comes and says, ‘Mr. Leno, I’m getting lunch, what do you want?’ So, I said, ‘I don’t know, where are you going?’ And he said, ‘We’re getting Mexican.’ And I said, ‘I don’t really like Mexican.’ So, he says, ‘Whoa! That’s kinda racist.’”
Leno takes pause, pushing back from his chair as if to emphasize his next point, “That’s not racist!
Being anti-guacamole is not racist, okay?!” Clearly and understandably upset from being grossly misjudged, Jay Leno shows his well-placed anger by stating his inner-thoughts: “You have no idea what racism is. That’s not racism – you idiot, you moron!”
In such real scenarios, ‘political over-correctness’ can summon up the negative side of human beings. Such as in the example recounted with Jay Leno, which ignited his fuse.
It wasn’t that long ago that Escondido, California, made national news involving a firestorm of opposing views on PC guidelines. It became a branding-ironhot issue which embroiled the entire San Diego North County, pushing many buttons of the citizenry. The controversy surrounding the Escondido Police Department’s random Vehicle Inspection Checkpoints: Sobriety Enforcement and DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoints, became a lightning rod of sorts, which attracted national attention and vehement accusations of racism from the largely Latino community, claiming racial profiling and breaches of political correctness. The claim being that such vehicle checkpoints are a disguised way for police to identify and deport undocumented residents.
However, even Hispanics have voiced differences within their own ethnic community, expressing their desires to keep their own community safe and law-abiding for their families, though such opposing opinions (from Latinos) are often shouted-down by other Latinos and, consequently, all is lost in the din of demagoguery. And so, continued allegations of racial profiling gone wrong goes unchallenged. Regarding the Escondido Police Department’s random Vehicle Inspection Checkpoints, one young Latino parent personally told me, “I’d rather they impound a car from a drunk driver than have that driver claim my little daughter’s life later on. After all, what is there to fear at these checkpoints if you are not breaking the law?”
Despite any semblance of countertruth, the power of political correctness has often caused many city, state, and federal entities to quickly back-down from any such confrontation, for fear of being labeled a racist, a label which can quickly end any career outright. Such consequences are often perceived to be far worse and more degrading than being bounced from a Biblical leper colony.
According to repeated nationwide polls, such thinking creates an unhealthy fear of PC.

In 1905 there were only 8,000 cars in the United States and only 144 miles of paved roads. The speed limit was 10 mph. Mississippi, Iowa, and Tennessee were each more heavily populated than California with a mere 1.4 million population. California was only the 21st. most populous state. Look what happened in just 113 years!
Would you like to reach the top rung in automobile aficionados? Look no further than the weekend edition of the Wall Street Journal. In the Gear and Gadget Section under the title “Rumble Seat” you will find expert automobile writing by Dan Neil. With his comments you need to have a dictionary nearby, as he has a vast vocabulary. He’s my favorite writer.
This week’s mystery car was built by a company that first built covered wagons in 1852. Fifty years later it was making cars, but only electric ones. They didn’t get around to gasoline powered automobiles until 1911. In 1963 they brought forth one of the most advanced creations in the industry with the Raymond Lowey Designing Team. This car was ultra-exotic and the most innovative since the Cord. It was the first U.S. car with front disc brakes plus blazing speed powered by a 289 cubic inch V-8 that broke 29 Bonneville Salt Flats Records including a top speed flying mile of 170 mph! The fiberglass body was built by Molded Plastic Body (MPB) who was also providing bodies for the Chevrolet Corvette. This beautiful four passenger sports car was built for two model years (1963 &1964) by this independent US Manufacturer. Unfortunately, they had financial difficulties and failed a few years later. Total production was 4463 cars. You may have guessed that I owned one of these early on and have lots of great memories. This is the car I was driving when I met my wife. Answer: Studebaker Avanti. Fire Communities Work Together
I have been appointed to a new Select Committee on Natural Disaster Response, Recovery and Rebuilding, co-chaired by Assemblymembers Marc Levine, D –Marin, (Santa Rosa Fire), and Monique Limón, D – Santa Barbara (Thomas Fire). Most members represent districts severely impacted by CA wildfires, including Cecilia Aguilar-Curry, D-Winters, (Napa Fire), Dr. Jim Wood, D-Healdsburg (Santa Rosa Fire), and myself (Lilac Fire). This week we met to hear from local governments and other experts on improvements to California’s response, alert systems and best practices in the rebuilding process. Since San Diego County's tragic Cedar Fire in October 2003 (273,246 acres, 2,820 structures, 15 lives lost) and Witch Fire in October 2007 (197,990 acres, 1,650 structures, 2 lives lost) we have learned a lot about communications, public alert systems and rebuilding. There is still more to do for future wildfires. Our committee is learning from each other and from the community leaders who are dealing with the latest fire aftermaths. In December, the Lilac Fire
destroyed over 150 structures in the Fallbrook area, including 75 manufactured homes. My legislation, AB 1943, which updates archaic state laws that get in the way of rebuilding and block conventional home financing, recently passed the Housing & Community Development Committee unanimously. Since AB 1943 has an urgency clause, once it’s signed by the Governor, it goes into effect immediately. Fires, earthquakes, floods and landslides are part of California living. Antiquated laws and regulations impacting natural disaster assistance and recovery must be updated. Most of all, we must be prepared. San Diego County Emergency Services has a great app called “SD Emergency” with real time information on incidents, emergencies and recovery. Also Cal Fire’s website: CAL FIRE - Home is a great source of information for communities in high fire risk areas like ours.

its ideals, and then decline to its eventual, ignominious death.
American writer, novelist, and social intellectual, Gore Vidal (1925– 2012) has warned us all, stating prior to his death: “As societies grow decadent, the language grows decadent, too. Words are used to disguise, not to illuminate, action. By destroying a city, you claim to have liberated it. Words are then used to confuse, so that at election time, people will solemnly vote against their own interests.” And not realize it. Many today believe that political correctness can, inadvertently, have deadly consequences. Some say it has already happened. Far too many times. Many point to November 5, 2009, with the mass shooting at Fort Hood, near Killeen, Texas, where a U.S. Army major, (who served as an Army psychiatrist) shot 13 people dead, and injured 32 others.
The deadly shooter was U. S. Army major, Nidal Hasan who, in gathered trial evidence, was deeply conflicted over being a Muslim in the U.S. military. In courtroom testimonies, it was brought out that prior to the shooting, Hasan had expressed critical views described by colleagues as clearly “anti-American.” Many other red flags went up, but were purposely ignored because of the dreaded specter that loomed up, called political correctness. All the dreaded clues were swept under the rug of blissful ignorance.
When Nidal Hasan’s own cousin testified at the post-shooting trial stating that Nidal was a practicing Muslim who soon turned against the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, many in attendance dropped their heads in shame. They were complicit in the moral sin of omission. The unforgivable sin of omission by remaining silent in the face of what they already knew. If only they would have jettisoned their fears of racial profiling and transgressing PC, they might have prevented the needless bloodletting at Ford Hood’s military base. Despite retrieved e-mails linking him with the late Imam, Anwar-alAwaki, where he stated, “I can’t wait to join you in the afterlife,” the FBI downplayed the significance, because as one source put it: “The FBI obviously dropped the ball on this in front of the whole wide world and just wanted to cover their collective asses.”
The courtroom evidence seemed overwhelming. Many coworkers and psychiatric colleagues had referred to him as a “ticking time bomb.” As early as his psychiatric education, Air Force Lt. Col. Dr. Val Finnell, who was a graduate school classmate of Hasan’s, testified: “Hasan dealt with whether the war on terror is a war against Islam.” And according to Col. Terry Lee, “He (Hasan) said, ‘Maybe Muslims should stand up and fight against the aggressor.’ At first we thought he
meant help the armed forces, but apparently that wasn’t the case. Other times he would make comments that we shouldn’t be in the war in the first place.”

But, for fear of not being political correct, much of the Army’s middle management chose to ignore these voluminous red flags and danger signals. As was manifested in formal trial proceedings, responsible parties were: “Afraid to be accused of racially profiling somebody.” A full six months prior to the Fort Hood shooting fatalities, Nidal Hasan made internet postings discussing suicide bombings and said a suicide bomber is like a courageous soldier who throws himself on a grenade to save his colleagues, and sacrifices his life for a “more noble cause.” Hasan also asked in one email to al-Awlaki, when is jihad appropriate, and whether it is permissible if innocents are killed in a suicide attack. (‘Jihad’ has many meanings among Muslims, including ‘a war or struggle against unbelievers.’) These were more than just questions for an Army psychiatrist to gain insight, these were queries outside the periphery of law and order. For example, prior to the shooting, Hasan discussed with al-Awlaki how to transfer funds abroad without it coming to the attention of lawful authorities.
On November 9, 2009, the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs issued the following official statement: “If the reports that we’re receiving of various statements he made, and acts that he took, are valid, and he had turned to Islamist extremism – if that is true – then the murder of 13 people was a terrorist act.”
During the shooting at the nation’s largest military base, a 40-year-old Army major, Hidal Hasan, opened fired on fellow American soldiers while screaming, “Allahu Akbar” (meaning “Allah is great,” or “God is great”).

In 1898, war broke out between the United States and Spain. O'Neill joined the Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough Riders as a Captain.
On the morning of July 1, 1898, the Rough Riders were stationed below Kettle Hill where O'Neill was killed in action. Theodore Roosevelt wrote about the death of O'Neill, in part: Buckey O’Neill: Editor, Miner, Politician, Gambler and Rough Rider
One of the Old West’s most colorful characters, yet relatively unknown was William Owen “Buckey” O’Neill. Bucky had enough careers and vocations than any 10 men. At one time or another he was a sheriff, newspaper editor, miner, politician, geologist, gambler, and lawyer, primarily in the Territory of Arizona.
“The most serious loss I and the regiment could have suffered befell just before we charged. … As O'Neill moved (along the front line) to and fro, his men begged him to lie down, and one of the sergeants said, 'Captain, a bullet is sure to hit you.' O'Neill took his cigarette out of his mouth, and blowing out a cloud of smoke laughed and said, 'Sergeant, the Spanish bullet isn't made that will kill me.' … As he turned on his heel a bullet struck him in the mouth and came out at the back of his head; so that even before he fell his wild and gallant soul had gone out into the darkness.”
Before the fighting was over, O'Neill's men had buried him on the slope of San Juan Hill. After the war, Buckey’s wellpreserved body was exhumed and was reinterred in Arlington National Cemetery. On July 3, 1907, a monument by sculptor Solon Borglum was dedicated to O'Neill on the lawn of the Yavapai County Courthouse in Prescott. Some 7,000 people gathered to witness the unveiling of a “Rough Rider” galloping on horseback. A U.S. postage stamp was issued in 1948, depicting Buckey’s Prescott statue. Buckey O'Neill is one of the main characters in a television movie “Rough Riders,” portrayed by Sam Elliott.
Still, the FBI, fully cognizant of his e-mails, and despite the numerous other red flags waved by his colleagues, did not even bother to have him under surveillance. I have had the honor of serving and working alongside close friends who are devout Muslims in their Islamic religion. Their American loyalty and patriotism is unsurpassed, and steadfast. To this day I have retained close friendships with my Muslim friends living in various pockets of San Diego County, including Poway, Vista, Encinitas, and San Clemente. In researching this story every one of them – without exception – said they would have ‘blown the whistle’ on Hidal Hasan, especially if hearing testimonials of his anti-American remarks and being openly regarded by his colleagues as “a ticking time bomb,” as was later manifested in court.

Born Feb. 2, 1860, his nickname came from his tendency to "buck the tiger," which is a gambler’s phrase for “playing contrary to the odds” at faro or other card games. Buckey later became a captain in Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders, and died in battle during the Spanish-American War. But, what an exciting life he led.
Buckey attended Georgetown Law School. During the first part of 1879, he responded to an item in the Washington Star calling for men to migrate to Arizona Territory. He arrived in Phoenix, riding a burro, in September the same year. Upon his arrival in town he was hired as a printer by the Phoenix Herald. By late 1880, he sought to experience the "Real West" in the boomtown of Tombstone. O'Neill took the opportunity to experience the local saloons before taking a job with the famed Tombstone Epitaph newspaper. By mid-1881 he again felt a wanderlust and left town. In early 1882, he was back in Phoenix working as a deputy marshal. Several weeks later O'Neill moved to Prescott, his home for the next 15 years.
Buckey became captain of the Prescott Grays in 1886, the local unit of the Arizona Militia. In April 27, 1886, he married Pauline Schindler. In 1888, while serving as Yavapai County judge (manager), Buckey was elected county sheriff on the Republican ticket. After his term was up, O'Neill was elected unanimously Mayor of Prescott. In 1894 and 1896 he ran for Delegate to the United States House of Representatives from Arizona Territory,

Oceanside, Visit Oceanside and the City of Oceanside Economic Development Department is bringing back the volunteer driven Downtown Ambassador Program. The volunteer ambassadors will staff the information booth to interface with downtown visitors and encourage them to explore the downtown district. The program operates Tuesday through Saturday from 11am to 3pm, and Thursday from 11am to 5pm. The program will commence on Tuesday, May 29 and end on Saturday, September 1, 2018. We are looking for highly enthusiastic individuals ages 16 and older to serve as Ambassadors. Volunteer Ambassadors will guide visitors to restaurants, museums, retail shops, public parking, and public transportation as well as provide general event information. Ambassadors will also provide information about current and future developments in downtown and will be tasked with collecting pertinent data from visitors. Ambassador Volunteers will be trained in all aspects of the program. High School students may be able to fulfill their community service requirement. Student Leaders Host Learning to Lead Forum on May 31st - On Thursday, May 31st at the Dove Library, from 7-9pm, Carlsbad High School students will team with local leaders for “Learning to Lead,” an interactive program exploring life lessons in leadership. This student-led effort is being spearheaded by the Carlsbad Educational Foundation’s Student Leadership Council, which includes 25 students from Sage Creek and Carlsbad High Schools. The Council was started last year as an opportunity for high school students to gain hands-on leadership skills and practical, real-world experience through monthly meetings, leadership curriculum, student advocacy and volunteerism. The forum is the culmination of months of student-led planning with a goal to build leadership and teamwork skills while
creating a platform for local leaders to share important life, career and leadership lessons. Prominent business, city, school and community leaders will join two interactive panels to share important life and leadership lessons. This event is open to the public; no RSVP required.

Another Deathly-Smelling Corpse Flower Set to Bloom Next Week Characterized by a scent Morticia Addams might use as an intoxicating perfume, the deathly-smelling Amorphophallus titanum, also known as Titan Arum, is expected to be in bloom late this week at San Diego Botanic Garden in Encinitas. The plant will be on public display in SDBG’s Bamboo Garden during regular business hours from 9am– 5pm daily. Admission prices are $14 for adults, $10 for students/seniors/military, $8 for children, and no admission charge for children under 2 years of age. “If there is any plant that creates a stir when in flower, it certainly is the Titan Arum,” says SDBG President & CEO Julian Duval. “One cannot predict when it will bloom. Individual plants only bloom about every 5 to 10 years and from start to finish this amazing plant usually goes through the whole bloom cycle, producing its huge inflorescence in less than 30 days. terized as a carrion flower. It is best known by its more common name as the ‘Corpse Flower.’ This plant grows in the rainforests of Sumatra. SDBG owns 2 Titan Arum plants that look as if they will be ready to bloom in early June, right after this one! Once this plant is in full bloom, possibly Thursday or Friday May 24 or 25, the Corpse Flower will be approximately 4 feet tall and emit its unique stench for only 1-2 days, so plan ahead because you don’t want to miss it! Through the end of next week, the flower will continue to grow approximately 3 inches per day until attaining its peak bloom height and then finally open up to display its full glory. This plant is currently on loan from California State University Fullerton. This specimen was grown from seed planted in 2007. The seed was obtained as a collaboration between SDBG, CSUF, Fullerton Arboretum, and community member James Booman. It was pollinated by the staff from Fullerton and Mr. Booman shared this seed
with the pollen donors. Over a dozen plants have bloomed from seeds planted in 2007 by Mr. Read. Gold Rush Exhibit Marks 170th Anniversary - A facsimile of the gold nugget that started the California Gold Rush has been placed on exhibit at the Valley Center History Museum to mark the 170th anniversary of the discovery of gold in 1848 and to honor the memory of the Valley Center woman who identified the first nugget. The exhibition, an expansion of the museum's permanent display on the Gold Rush, features items not previously placed on public view. A special tribute is paid to Elizabeth Jane Wimmer who tested and identified the first piece of gold. She homesteaded in Valley Center with her husband Peter at Cole Grade and Cool Valley roads and is buried in the local cemetery. The display includes a copy of the affidavit attesting that the nugget she carried with her for 40 years was the original piece of gold, and a vintage lithograph showing Wimmer testing the nugget alongside James

Good News for the Escondido Creek Trail
The trail along the Escondido Creek has long been an area with significant landscape and maintenance deficiencies but slowly, some improvements have started to take place. Several years ago, the Creek was selected for a study and planning effort led by graduate students from Cal Poly Pomona. A vision plan and master plan have been on file since then. Grant funding has paid for segments of lighting and partnerships along the
unborn child. Not so much for herself – but, please -- just spare my unborn baby.
In an emotional testimony at the trial of Nidal Hasan, Sergeant Maria Guerra, who was on the other side of the office door heard the anguished pleas of a mother-tobe: “Please don’t! Please don’t! My baby! My baby!” Then, there was the ring of gunfire. Continuous shots.
Such episodes are difficult to read about. Punishing and disturbing are better descriptions. But in war, as in life, we must sometimes be forced out of our comfort zones, and face the real-life dilemmas that are out there, in the real world today. Such as dealing with rectifying possible political over-correctness that may have gotten outof-control. If that is the case, then

Maybe we can learn a lot from that. The young woman, known as U. S. Army Private first class, Francheska Velez, never made it home to her mother and father’s waiting open arms, back in 2009. And not for any sound reason.
Her daddy reflected on her little girl who was soon to be a mommy, and he a proud grandpa. He still held fast to his thoughts: “She was a very happy girl. And sweet.”
Whatever this writer believes is unimportant. What is important is to listen to the majority of Americans. That’s what a democracy is all about.

Once the main route for passenger trains between the Bay Area and Los Angeles, it is nearly a Never, Never Land for Amtrak these days because of the large numbers of freight trains using the route. For me it was a chance to travel the rail route that brought me to California in 1951. But that’s another story.

That’s the railroad train fan’s version of Never, Never Land because passenger trains almost never, never go there.
Last month, Amtrak’s Coast Starlight was detoured because of track, tunnel and bridge repairs on the normal route to Oakland. My wife was going to be gone that weekend, so I booked a ticket for this “rare mileage” trip. For rail fans like me, it was not only rare mileage, but also a journey over the famous Tehachapi Loop between Mojave and Bakersfield. The Loop, as it is known, was built in 1875-76 and first brought rail service to southern California. The loop and its horseshoe curves were designed to get loaded freight trains from the 400 foot elevation of Bakersfield over the 4000 foot summit near Tehachapi. It is an engineering marvel.
What is “rare mileage” in the church? What are the jobs, the opportunities, the ministries that are your rare mileage, for which you would never, never volunteer? For me, it’s the Church Nursery. It’s not the toddlers, or even the babies, but the dirty diapers that discourage me. You know, “Been there, done that, have the dirty T-Shirt.” For you it may be Children’s Ministry. Ten squirming kids for an hour, daring you to inspire them or even keep their attention. Or it might be dusting off that old horn or guitar and playing in the Worship Band. It might be a Missions Trip to a strange culture, unfamiliar food and a new language. Everyone has their Never, Never Land, places they would never go, things they would never do. In the Church and in life. In your Church, in your ministry, in your daily walk with Christ, which of your Never, Never Lands could you turn into “rare mileage.” Enjoy the journey.

“Thank You for Your Service” - As a retired Vietnam Veteran I have had many people tell me “Thank You for Your Service” and believe me, myself and all veterans love to hear this. However, I want to tell you about a much better way to say “Thank You for Your Service.” The Disabled American Veterans (DAV) organization provides a door-to-door shuttle service for San Diego veterans that need help to get to their medical appointments at the VA Medical Center in La Jolla, as well as the VA Oceanside and Mission Valley clinics. David Strobehn, the DAV Transportation Coordinator said, “Volunteer drivers are the backbone of our organization and last year they transported over 12,000 patients. Today I have a pressing need for additional drivers to handle an increasing number of veterans requesting our service. The most difficult part of my job is that I have to turn away dozens of patients each month because of a lack of drivers. Many patients have told me that the DAV is much more than just a convenience for them, it’s actually the difference

Another reason to avoid investing a gob of money in new PCs is that, especially for home users, Windows PCs are going the way of the dinosaurs. Five years from now, very few home users will use a Windows PC. Even today nearly all applications and file storage methods are available in the cloud. It will take us a while to get used to the idea but our home “PC” will be a smart–phone nested in a cradle that connects to a touch screen monitor, mouse and keyboard. The operating system is Google’s Android or Apple’s IOS, Microsoft’s Windows will be a distant memory. Businesses will continue to use the
Windows OS on the PC’s in their LANs but they too will eventually gravitate toward cloud based data processing.
Certainly there will always be a place for off line (local) processing but the vast majority of home and business applications and data storage will be handled in the cloud and our smart phones will provide not only communications but also be the devices that connect us to the processing and storage assets in the cloud. If Microsoft hopes to be around, they’re going to need to find a new niche or two. It doesn’t appear that we’re going to need them for long.

Won’t be long before the hot summer months arrive and the hot summer nights. We don’t have central air conditioning at our house and the master bedroom gets mighty warm. I usually wind up moving to the living room, where we have our air conditioner, to sleep.
Or, I may just decide to splurge and spend a few dollars to buy a window air conditioner for our bedroom (and then fight with Mary about it being too cold to sleep . . . ). I hope with all the trouble going on in our world that this is the worst problem I have to face this summer. Peace would be nice.

TRANSNET LOCAL STREET IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM OF PROJECTS
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that on June 12, 2018 a public hearing will be held with respect to the City of San Marcos adopting projects in the 2018 Regional Transportation Improvement Program (RTIP). San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG), as the Metropolitan Planning Organization and the Regional Transportation Planning Agency, is required by state and federal laws to develop and adopt a Regional Transportation Improvement Program (RTIP). The RTIP is a multi-billion dollar, multi-year program of proposed projects for major transportation projects in the San Diego Region. Transportation projects funded with federal, state, TransNet, and the San Diego transportation sales tax program must be included in an approved RTIP. The RTIP covers five fiscal years and incrementally implements San Diego Forward: The Regional Plan, the longrange transportation plan for the San Diego region. The 2018 RTIP covers fiscal years 2019 through 2023. The City of San Marcos recommends programming the 2018 RTIP projects as they are either regionally significant, capacity increasing projects or are projects that are being recommended for TransNet revenues. All projects programmed with TransNet funds meet all the requirements of the TransNet Extension Ordinance and accommodate travel for pedestrians and bicyclists.
