Who was really the fastest gun in the Old West? This is a most intriguing question and one not easily answered. Unlike any other culture on Earth, our early Western days are uniquely ours. There may be similar parallels elsewhere – as all cultures go through early stages of development and expansion – but our Tombstones, Dodge Cities, and famous gunslingers form a most unique legacy that is known throughout the world. So, who were, truly, the fastest gunslingers of yesteryear? The quickest-of-the-quick in the American Old West? Certainly, Hollywood movies are of no help in ascertaining any answers. Tinsel Town has long played fast-and-loose with the facts in their movie-making, especially in the genre of Western films where real historical events are muddled with exaggerated glamour and sanitized romance.
In retrospect, contemporary historians of the early West find the public’s fascination of gunslingers, and their speed of draw, to be a fascinating study. Whether one is comfortable or not with the Wild West and its segments dealing with notorious figures of bank robbers, thieves, and cold-blooded killers, the American West and its pioneering days are historical truths that cannot be ignored. Every civilized country today, without exception, has had its violent and vigilante beginnings.
That we Americans have a tendency to romanticize and wax nostalgic over our Wild West era is beyond dispute and, quite simply, an element in our social DNA which we find no need to apologize over. In a democratic country, we Americans have the right to be curious, fascinated, and steadfast on posing such questions as: “Who was the fastest gun in the West?” But first, it is necessary in an article such as this, to clearly explain and present some basic background information so that this discussion can proceed with better appreciation, clarity, and insight. Today, we have one of the most popular American West pastime organizations aptly called, “The Cowboy Fast Draw Association” The Paper - 760.747.7119

(CFDA), which has over 70 affiliated clubs across North America and several foreign countries. Though there are many such organizations, “The Cowboy Fast Draw Association” is the largest of its kind in the world. And, as you might expect, these organizations hold fast-draw competitions throughout the United States and bestow official titles such as, “Cowboy Fast Draw World Record Holder.” These events are electronically-timed and require pin-point accuracy as well as speed. There are categories for both men and women to compete. The CFDA motto is, “Safety First, Fun Second, and Competition Third.” According to the Sport of Cowboy Fast Draw, they give this summation: “You might say this all started in 1873 with Colt’s release of the Peacemaker. In the era of 1873
through the 1890s, the Romance and Legend of the American West was unlike any other culture in the world – this time period is the premise for Cowboy Fast Draw.” (Later in this article, I will list the 2016 World’s Fast Draw Competition schedule that is nearest to San Diego County, in the event you may wish to attend as a spectator.) As you read this, new clubs are forming, constantly, throughout the world, through CFDA’s “Clubs in the Works” program. I must emphasize, the fascination of fast-draw cowboys of our American Old West even extends outside of our own country and, in fact, is accelerating in interest in European, Asian, Oriental, and Latin American countries! This is an astonishing level of global interest in our American Old West.
In 1990, the country of Australia released a box-office hit-movie titled, “Quigley Down Under,” starring Tom Selleck and Alan Rickman. Selleck’s character, Matthew Quigley, is an American cowboy sharpshooter who is hired by rancher, Elliot Marston (Alan Rickman). Australian rancher, Marston, is infatuated with the stories of quick-draw gunslingers from the American Old West, and is awestruck that Quigley has actually been to Dodge City. The plot of this Australian film reflects the growing worldwide fascination that even nonAmericans have today: the irresistible notion and curiosity of fast-draw American cowboys, and who was the fastest? In the movie, Australian Elliot Marston dons western-style sixshooters and prides himself on

practicing his fast draw, which he eventually utilizes in a standoff with Quigley (Tom Selleck). There are many other foreign films replicating the American Old West and its gun-slinging legacy. Clint Eastwood’s so-called ‘Spaghetti Westerns’ (filmed in Italy), such as “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly,” are among my favorites. The popular 1994 motion picture, “Tombstone,” with Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday, proved not only a boxoffice hit, but the residual popularity has generated a cult-following that persists to this day.
In Hollywood, it is a littleknown fact that comedian Jerry Lewis, as well as entertainer, Sammy Davis, Jr., were actually among the fastest quick-draw exponents (in their prime)! Both of these legendary entertainers have been electronically-timed in the rudiments of: reacting, drawing, and firing a six-shooter! And they were both categorized as highly proficient as quick-draw artists. Ironically, TV Western stars, such as Marshall Matt Dillon (played by James Arness), of “Gunsmoke” fame were, in real life, considered very slow on the draw! A store that sells new husbands has opened in New York City , where a woman may go to choose a husband. Among the instructions at the entrance is a description of how the store operates:

So, a woman goes to the Husband Store to find a husband. On the first floor the sign on the door reads:

Regarding real-life actors playing gunslinger roles, Hollywood actors Lee Van Cleef, Clint Eastwood, and a young John Wayne, were all considered very fast on the draw. In the 1948 film “Red River,” it is clearly evident that the speedof-draw that John Wayne exhibits is most impressive (and without the help of any Hollywood special effects). In Hollywood circles, cowboy actors, Lee Van Cleef, Clint Eastwood, and John Wayne, were clearly in the forefront of being genuinely quick-draw artists. Of these three, Eastwood was considered fastest. But what about the early West? Many gunmen come to mind, some more recognized than others. And many were deadly with a Colt Peacemaker .45 revolver. But deadly, and quick on the draw, are not necessarily, the same. All famous outlaws were involved in shootouts. But, not all were actually in a one-on-one face-off fast-draw duel. Such scenarios were, historically, more rare. Suddenly, the field of contenders comprising the quick-draw artist is suddenly shrunk down in size.

West often stayed clear of each other, out of respect. And because most took no unnecessary risks by facing a formidable fast-draw opponent. Most shootings were random, longrange, often behind barricades and open daylight between shooters, as in the celebrated “Gunfight at the OK Corral,” (which actually took place in a narrow 15’ to 20’-wide lot on Fremont Street), or the “Friscoe Shootout,” (involving 81 gunmen), or the “Gunfight at Iron Springs.” All of the aforementioned shootouts did not rely on how fast the opponents drew their guns, but more on their long-range accuracy and calmness under fire. Fast-draw gunslinger, Wyatt Earp (born Wyatt Berry Stapp Earp, 1848-1929) said it best: “The most important lesson I learned was that the winner of a gunplay usually was the one who took his time. In all my life as a frontier peace officer, I did not know a really proficient gunfighter who had anything but contempt for the gun-fanner, or the man who literally shot from the hip.” That is not to say Wyatt Earp did not wish to draw first – he did – but what followed after the quick draw was calmness and accuracy! On both levels, Wyatt Earp was among the fastest and mostdeadly in terms of accuracy, in the Old West. Multiple times, after a rapid draw, Wyatt Earp would commence firing and begin closing

his distance, simultaneously, in one seamless stream of movement, like a well-oiled killing machine. Today’s historians of the Wild West marvel at how Wyatt Earp could suffer from multiple gunshot piercing holes through his long overcoat and still, methodically and calmly, keep walking and firing to close for the kill. This calm, coldlycalculated image of Earp approaching, gun blazing, would psychologically unravel an opponent who knew that, in a few seconds, he was about to die. Again, Wyatt Earp was not only lightning fast on the draw, he was incredibly accurate for his day. During the “Gunfight at the OK Corral,” Wyatt’s bullet was the first to find its mark, tearing through Frank McLaury’s belly and causing McLaury’s own shot to go wild and through Wyatt’s coattail. In less than two seconds, Frank McLaury’s body lay dead on the ground. Upon seeing a relentless Wyatt approaching nonstop, Ike Clanton panicked and ran towards Wyatt pleading for his life! Wyatt shouted to Ike, “Go to fighting or get away!” Ike Clanton needed to hear no more – he deserted his brother, Billy, and ran for his life! Despite the many Hollywood versions, the actual “Gunfight at the OK Corral” lasted only 30 seconds!

The battle started with the sound of Billy Clanton and Frank McLaury cocking their pistols. It was then that both sides, simultaneously, drew their guns. The world’s most respected Old West scholars often repeat the fact that the OK Corral gunfight, in reality, did not occur within or even next door to the corral, but in a narrow vacant lot on the side of C. S. Fly’s Photographic Studio on Fremont Street. Some opposing gunmen came within 6-feet of each other (1.8 meters) within a short duration of time: about thirty shots were fired in thirty seconds! This explodes, perhaps, the most notorious myth and persistent falsehood regarding this epic Wild West gunfight: its location, and its brief duration of time.
Despite the inevitable myths surrounding Wyatt Earp, the core of reality is that Wyatt Earp needed no embellishments to his real-life exploits. And despite his occasional lapses in morals or lack of justice that he sometimes exhibited in a turbulent and disruptive era, respected historians are in full agreement that he was a product of his time. In the annals of gunslingers, Wyatt Earp, and his deadly arsenal of being an extremely fast-draw gunman, coupled with his uncanny calmness and pin-point accuracy, make him truly legendary. In the historic “Gunfight at Iron Springs,” Wyatt Earp’s long coat was punctured by several bullets on both sides and his boot heel was also struck. With startling calm, Wyatt eventually returned Curly Bill’s gunfire with his own shotgun, shooting Curly Bill in the chest at close

Regarding his handgun, to better appreciate Wyatt’s skill and accuracy with a revolver it should be made clear that since the Wild West days, a bullet’s speed has at least tripled, and the accuracy, today, has increased by six to seven times. What he was able to accomplish with the weapon of his era is, in perspective, considered quite impressive by today’s standards. Also, Wyatt’s contempt for quick-draw gunslingers who ‘showboated’ by fanning their weapons holds true by today’s professionals. Fast-draw champions today that are required to accurately hit designated targets in competition claim that anyone fanning a gun accomplishes nothing except creating unnecessary noise. “No one can fan a six-gun, especially during that era, and hope to hit anything,” is the consensus. In outdoor magazines of the 1920s, a controversy surrounding fanning was put to rest. It was settled when they posted a $1,000 check to anyone who could fan a revolver and hit a designated target, even at a ridiculously short range. This challenge was widely publicized, but the check was never claimed. Wyatt Earp knew much of what he talked about. Added into the mix was that gunslingers back in the day of, say, Wild Bill Hickok, shot with black powder. Smokeless gunpowder did not come into general use until about 1893. Therefore, in many shootouts it sometimes took onlookers several minutes to see who actually won because of all the gun smoke that filled the air. Love him or hate him, Wyatt Earp’s remarkable legacy is forever secure in the annals of the American Old West. He was among the fastest, most accurate, and most deadly gunman

Home Firearm Safety/Basic Handgun Class – A monthly 3-hour familiarization and safety class is offered for anyone anticipating the purchase of, or who already owns, a handgun. in the annals of the American Old West.
While gunslingers with deadly reputations more-often-than-not avoided each other (as a general rule) Hollywood would have us believe otherwise: a young upcoming gunslinger wishes to enhance his reputation by ‘calling out’ a more reputable gun. These scenarios were almost non-existent. Gunfights were often a spur-of-the-moment scenario, involving alcohol, short tempers, and short-comings at a saloon poker game. Such shootings and killings were anything but artistic with nothing to do with speed of draw. It was often fumbling for one’s gun and reaction to it. Knifings and shootings were not the elegant stuff of Hollywood, but rather brazen, sloppy scenarios involving common rowdy-folk. Stray bullets often injured, or sometimes killed innocent bystanders.
In regards to famous gunman, outlaws, and town Marshalls, their reputation for killing many people was often without true merit – they often shot lesserexperienced opponents, as well as unruly drunks who were far from being adequate adversaries. Nevertheless, if you had notches on your gun and your kill-rate was well-known, you would be greatly feared by common town folk, even though your victims were far from being proficient with a handgun. Also, gunmen of that era often exaggerated and hyped their own killings which made them appear bigger-than-life. One such example was John Wesley Hardin (1853-1895) who historians say over-embellished himself to the point where his reputation, today, sadly remains unchallenged by the casual reader. Hardin claimed to have killed 42 men in gunfights (not

duels but various shootouts), when in actuality he had murdered, perhaps, half that number. In prison, he even wrote an overly-biased and exaggerated account of himself in his autobiography. Historians are in general agreement that many people that John Wesley Hardin killed, or murdered, were not skilled in defending themselves. From the early age of 15, Hardin found he could have his way with opponents that were easy prey. For example, in November of 1868, Hardin shot and killed a black former slave with his revolver. The black ex-slave was unarmed. Nevertheless, such killings enhanced Hardin as a quick-draw gunslinger which, in reality, he was not. Yes, he was among the most feared and he was certainly among the most deadly gunmen of his era as far as the number of people he murdered or killed. However, in this article of fastdraw-cowboys, he does not fit. Western scholars do not even consider him as ‘recklessly bold’ or even courageous, in facing someone on equal footing in terms of skill and experience with a sidearm. One example of John Wesley Hardin realizing his limitations was in his few encounters with James “Wild Bill” Hickok. Hardin both feared and idolized Hickok. Hardin also fabricated or exaggerated his encounters with Hickok, spinning tales that made Hardin seem the better gunman. However, in truth, Hardin greatly feared Hickok and never gave Hickok a bad time. Once, when Hardin was confronted by Abilene Marshall, Hickok, to hand over his gun because it violated a no-gun city ordinance, Hardin quickly sur-

On Wednesday, February 17th, at 7:08 p.m., the City of Carlsbad Police Department responded to a suicidal subject with a gun, in a residential area located in the 5100 block of Whitman Way. When officers arrived, they attempted to make contact with the suicidal subject, to no avail. Officers set up a perimeter around the residence where the subject lived and began to evacuate surrounding neighbors.
During the incident officers learned that the subject had multiple guns in his possession and the Carlsbad Police Department Bearcat armored vehicle was deployed. After numerous attempts to make contact with the subject, the Carlsbad Police Department Special Weapons and Tactics Team made entry into the residence and located a deceased male. Multiple guns were found at the scene. The medical examiner responded to complete a death investigation and notify the next of kin. Vehicle and Foot Pursuit, Carlsbad
On Friday, February 19th at 11:15 a.m. a Carlsbad Police Officer stopped a black Hyundai Genesis for expired registration at the intersection of Palomar Airport Road and El Camino Real in the city of Carlsbad. The driver of the vehicle identified himself with a California Identification Card as Nicholas Alvarez, a 22
year old male from Carlsbad. Alvarez then fled the scene of the traffic stop heading east bound on Palomar Airport Road. Another Carlsbad Police Officer observed the vehicle south bound on El Fuerte Street from Palomar Airport Road but was unable to safely get across the intersection from the north side of the intersection to pursue the vehicle. Several officers responded to the area and attempted to locate the vehicle.
At about 11:38 a.m. a Carlsbad Police Officer located the vehicle travelling south bound on Alicante Road near Alga Norte Community Park. The officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop of the vehicle by activating his overhead emergency lights and siren. The vehicle sped southbound on Alicante Road towards Poinsettia Lane. The vehicle attempted to make a right turn and head west bound on Poinsettia Lane. The vehicle was unable to make the turn and collided with the center-divide on Poinsettia Lane west of Alicante Road, disabling the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle fled on foot and was pursued on foot by the officer. A 43 year old male from Alberta, Canada, observed the officer in foot pursuit of the suspect and tackled the suspect. The driver was subsequently taken into custody by the officer. The driver was again identified as Nicholas Alvarez. He was arrested and booked into Vista Jail for evading a police officer, resisting a police officer, hit-and-run and
stacked up in the dining room and kitchen, making way for the flooring people to come in and proceed with the next day’s cutting up and removal of carpeting and pads and installation of the new floor. So far, everything is good. Bedtime.

The Life of lyle: My dad was one of those people who could fix anything, wood, plastic, electronics . . . he could take it apart, fix it, and put it back together again. Sadly, that genetic trait did not pass to me. Or to my eldest son, Scott. It did to my youngest son, Kenny.
It came to pass that I took up occupancy in a home that I own in Escondido and me and said eldest son, Scott, took it upon ourselves to re-hab said house. We had the pool deck painted, new gutters installed, new kitchen faucet installed, and, now, we were having a brand new wood laminate floor installed. Furniture

I am normally an early riser by habit but, just to be safe, I thought to set the alarm to waken me at 6am. I innocently asked Scott, “do you know how to set an alarm clock?”
He laughed fanatically and derided his poor father for being such a doofus. “Anyone knows how to set an alarm clock,” he guffawed. He proceeded to show dear old dad how it was done.
And he failed miserably. (He wasn’t laughing quite so much now.) He went and got his electronic alarm clock, brought it in to my bedroom, hooked it up, departed.
I crawled under the covers, nice and warm, and settled into a
driving on a suspended driver’s license. Missing At-Risk Female Adult Carlsbad
On Monday, Feb. 22 at 10:31 a.m., the City of Carlsbad Police Department was notified about a missing, at-risk female adult.
The adult, 76-year-old Mary Agnes Madden, who goes by “Aggie,” has the early stages of Alzheimer’s and knows her name but not necessarily her address.

Naturally, I did what any normal human being would do. I hit the snooze button.
And drifted back into a deep, warm, comfortable sleep.
“Beep, beep, beep . . .” - one more time I hit the snooze alarm and the process repeated itself.
Finally, I gave up. I hit every off button I could find.
No luck. More periodic beeping. Then, from the brilliant mind that I have, a solution presented itself. I unplugged the damned clock. That’ll teach it, I thought. Back to sleep.
However, next morning I called Mrs. Madison and said, “dear, would you kindly get your pretty buns over here as quickly as you can and set the time and alarm on this accursed electronic clock?” Upon her arrival I distinctly hear her chuckle and am pretty sure I saw her shaking her head in a negative motion once or twice.

rendered it. In August of that same year, Hickok was in pursuit of Hardin for killing an unarmed man in his sleep (for snoring too loudly). According to archival historians, “Hardin quickly left Kansas, never to return, thereby avoiding a confrontation with Hickok.” Nonetheless, John Wesley Hardin remains on the list as one of the deadliest gunmen of the Wild West, only because he murdered a lot of men – often unfairly. However, in the pantheon of fast-draw cowboys, most Wild West experts now say he does not make the list. Like many gunman who had notorious reputations, Hardin was killed – not in a gun duel – but was shot from the back on August 19, 1895 by John Selman, Sr. The bullet that killed Hardin from the back of the head emerged from his left eye, and though he was killed instantly, the feared assassin took no chances and walked over to Hardin’s fallen body and pumped two extra slugs into his victim. As previously mentioned, outlaws were greatly feared and, therefore, often cowardly executed to remove them as a source of vexation to the mainstream community. The same fate would befall Jesse James. In regards to Jesse James, he was not considered among the fastest, yet he was
among the most deadly. In the course of 15 years, he held up 11 banks, seven trains, three stagecoaches, one country fair, and a payroll courier. In terms of accuracy, his brother, Frank James, was greatly his superior. In support of this claim, Old West scholars are in agreement and have preserved Frank James’ various targets from his various target practices. No target of Jesse James’ can compare with Frank’s deadly accuracy! One gunman with a fast-draw reputation in the Old West was Harvey Logan (born Harvey Alexander Logan, 1867-1904), also known as Kid Curry. Curry’s primary claim to fame is mostly predicated on his association with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and their infamous Wild Bunch Gang. Though less renowned as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Logan was, nevertheless, referred to as “the wildest of the Wild Bunch Gang.” Historians confirm that he killed as many as nine law enforcement officers in five separate shootings, plus two other men in unrelated events. Curry was prone to great exaggeration regarding his ability to be the fastest on the draw. His boast was that he could balance a poker chip or silver dollar on his extended wrist,

Annette Champion called it a career recently and lots of folks miss their gatherings at the iconic restaurant. With all of the fixtures and equipment in place it’d likely be a candidate for another upscale restaurant in downtown Escondido.
Vincent’s remains open, after the passing of Vincent Grumel; we have the French Bakery, Bellamy’s, Swami’s, Ale House 9, Intertwined, Charlie’s, Dominic’s, Paradiso, all serving up a broad fare to suit most any foodie. We are all curious as to what, if any, new restuarant takes over the Champions location. Stay tuned. As soon as we hear, we’ll pass it along. ••••• More politics. And then there were five.
The GOP race is dwindling down to a not-so-precious few, what with Jeb Bush bowing out after disappointing vote totals. The GOP now has Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, John Kasich and Dr. Ben Carson.
Dunno about you but I get a lot more out of the Town Hall type meetings than I do on the debates. One on one, moderator and candidate ... and/or with audience members. Same with the Democratic Candidates. They don’t shout each other down, they get to expand on their viewpoints and you get a bit better idea of what their political stands are. Not terribly excited about candidates from either party. I think we can do better . . . but these are the cards dealt to us - so the American way is to make the best of it.
Who will get the nomination for the GOP? Right now, it would appear Trump has the inside track ... but lots can happen between now and the Primaries. Too close to call between Clinton and Sanders . . . probably be a bit more interesting as the season goes on . . . but I could do without a week or two of debates and pundits opining. Football season is over, there’s not much in the way of interesting programming on tv ... just think . . . we may have to go outside and live a little! Or maybe visit with our family. I got so tired of all the political mish-mash that I turned the tv off, stopped reading political op/ed pieces on the Internet.
So, I took the plunge. I spent time with my family. They seem like nice people.

In 2008, the Discovery Channel’s popular television show, “Myth Busters,” exposed Kid Curry’s fast-draw claims to be totally without truth! Myth Buster’s television crew, with the help of various scientific testing, along with a bona-fide fast-draw champion named “Lightning Larry,” proceeded to explode and dismiss Harvey Logan’s account as being pure fiction, and nothing more. Even the show’s authentic fast-draw champion, who was a guest on this particular segment, gave Harvey Logan, a.k.a. Kid Curry, a failing grade! (“Myth Busters – Big Blast Collection,” Discovery Channel video, 2008). Though considered fast on the draw, Harvey Logan was not considered in the same fast lane as a Wyatt Earp or James “Wild Bill” Hickok, both of whom were deadly fast and deadly accurate – the consummate recipe for the well-rounded fast-draw-cowboy. James “Wild Bill” Hickok (born James Butler Hickok, 18371876), was a figure that was perhaps more exaggerated and embellished than any other single individual. As early West
We Should Stop Wasting Water
As most of you know, water remains one of the most pressing issues facing our state and region. Whether or not our drought is ending cannot yet be determined, though future droughts are a certainty. I have long supported initiatives that would increase local water supplies. While a member of the Escondido City Council, I was an early supporter of the `toilet to tree’ plan. I joined with Escondido Growers for Agricultural Preservation (EGAP) to support using recycled wastewater to irrigate the citrus and avocado groves on the city’s perimeter. Since the capacity of the city’s outfall pipeline that delivers Escondido’s excess wastewater to the ocean is insufficient for future growth, a costly upgrade will soon become necessary. Instead of spending millions to upgrade the pipeline, Escondido is now building the first part of a multi-
historians and other experts of the era have evaluated, “It is difficult to separate the truth from fiction about Hickok, the first “dime novel” hero of the Western era and in many ways one of the first comic book heroes.” Such individuals present a challenge to contemporary scholars to sort through, “In the dime novels, Hickok’s exploits were presented in heroic form, making him seem larger-than-life. In truth, most of the stories were greatly exaggerated or fabricated by both the newspapers of his day, as well as by himself.” However, strictly on his prowess with a handgun and his quick-draw ability and accuracy, these true skills are uncontested. On that specific account alone, James “Wild Bill” Hickok was, without question, and without exaggeration, one of the fastest guns in the American West. As one scholar puts it, “Hickok was an actor, gambler,lawman, and gunfighter who is regarded as one of the most skilled gunslingers of all time.” All other aspects of his life are not so clearly defined and remain shrouded in myth and hearsay. On July 21, 1865, Hickok confronted Davis Tutt in a “quick-draw” face-off, considered one of the first of its kind (on record) by many Old West historians. The two men faced each other sideways in the his-

phased project to deliver this water to local farmers and other users. While this solution won’t work everywhere, the plan could become a model for the entire state.
Two years ago I joined with Assemblyman Adrin Nazarian (D – Sherman Oaks), to co-author legislation to expedite construction of recycled water pipelines along existing rights-of-way by streamlining the regulatory process. That bill passed the Assembly with a huge bipartisan majority, but later died in the Senate. Since then we’ve had two more years of severe drought, and I am hopeful that the time is ripe for another try. This session I will be introducing similar legislation that can be used throughout California to increase the supply of locally available water. There is no one-size-fits-all solution to California’s watersupply problems. Local initiatives like Escondido’s should be encouraged. The state just needs to get out of the way.

The Most Famous Man on Earth
During his lifetime, William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody was the most famous man in the world. From Pony Express rider to buffalo hunter to Indian scout and finally showman of the world, Cody filled his life with adventure most could only dream of doing. Arguably, he continues to be the most famous man on earth.
Cody was born Feb. 26, 1846, in what is today Le Claire, Iowa. He grew up for several years in his father's hometown in Canada before his family moved to the Kansas Territory. After his father's death, Cody became a rider for the Pony Express at age 14 in 1861. During the American Civil War, he served for the Union

toric dueling stance (presenting a smaller target), before quickdrawing their weapons and measuring their fire. Hickok’s extremely fast reflexes and deadly marksmanship, rendered him a wide-open victor! Hickok was not afraid of confrontation in any quick-draw match-up no matter how skilled his opponent. This fearless confidence made him widely respected even by reputable outlaws. Their only chance would be to ambush Hickok, or shoot him in the back. Saloon owners are often handy with a handgun and Phil Coe was no exception. Coe practiced often and became efficient with his draw technique. On one occasion, Coe attempted to intimidate Hickok by stating, “I can kill a crow on the wing.” Looking Coe directly in the eye, Hickok replied, “Did the crow have a pistol? Was he shooting back? Cause I will.” Coe experienced cold feet and kept clear of Hickok from that day on. Because truly fast gunmen are greatly feared, they are sometimes ambushed, or shot in the back by people who wish them to go away, permanently. History records Hickok being killed by a cowardly act of Jack McCall

from 1863 to the end of the war in 1865. Later he served as a civilian scout to the U.S. Army during the Indian Wars, receiving the Medal of Honor in 1872. Cody was Chief of Scouts for the Third Cavalry during the Plains Wars. Part of the time, he scouted for Indians and fought in 16 battles; at other times, he hunted and killed bison to supply the Army and the Kansas Pacific Railroad.
William F. Cody received the Medal of Honor in 1872 for gallantry as an Army scout in the Indian wars. But it was revoked in 1917, because Congress stated only military personnel could receive the award. However, in 1989 the Army Board for Correction of Military Records ruled that Cody and four other scouts are deserving of the honor and restored their names to Medal of Honor roll.
"Buffalo Bill" got his nickname after the American Civil War, when he had a contract to supply Kansas Pacific Railroad workers with buffalo meat. Cody is purported to have killed 4,282 American bison (commonly known as buffalo) in 18 months, (1867-1868). Cody and hunter William Comstock competed in an eight-hour buffaloshooting match over the exclusive right to use the name, in which Cody won by killing 68 bison to Comstock's 48. In December 1872, Cody traveled to Chicago to make his stage debut with friend Texas Jack Omohundro in “The Scouts of the Prairie,” one of the original Wild West shows produced by Western novelist Ned Buntline. During the 1873-1874 season, Cody and Omohundro invited their friend James Butler "Wild Bill" Hickok to join them in a new play called “Scouts of the Plains.” The troupe toured for 10 years. Cody's part typically included an 1876 incident at the Warbonnet Creek, where he claimed to have scalped a Cheyenne warrior, Chief Yellow Hand.
Cody's Wild West show’s headline performers were well known in their own right. People such as Annie Oakley and her husband Frank Butler did sharpshooting. In 1887, Cody took the show to Great Britain in celebration of the Jubilee year of Queen Victoria. Cody died on Jan. 10, 1917, surrounded by family and friends at his sister's house in Denver. Upon the news of Cody's death, tributes were made by Great Britain’s George V, Germany’s Kaiser Wilhelm II, and President Woodrow Wilson. His funeral service was in Denver. He’s buried in Golden, Colo., near Denver. There has been a continuing controversy as to

(a.k.a. “Crooked Nose Jack”), who entered a saloon unnoticed by Hickok. While Hickok was playing poker, McCall shot him, point blank, in the back of the head, killing Hickok, instantly. McCall’s bullet emerged through Hickok’s right cheek, striking another poker player. Playing five-card-draw, Hickok died with a pair of aces and a pair of eights, beginning the legend of this poker hand being designated as “Dead Man’s Hand.” Despite several rumors and theories, the motive for Hickok’s murder remains unclear. Doc Holliday (born John Henry Holliday, 1851-1887), was without question one of the most colorful of all gunslingers out of the American Old West. None was more eloquent, educated, or had a greater command of the English language, than Doc Holliday. He was also fearless, with little or no regard for his own life, which made him doubly ferocious in any encounter. Though often portrayed in Hollywood movies with a shotgun, Doc Holliday was lethalquick with a sidearm. And he proved it on several occasions. Doc Holliday’s life was a complicated one which created a prism of friends, enemies, and all shades in-between. But mostly, you either disliked him intense-

up and talk with me! It is such a heartfelt feeling for me to know that I have in, some small way, brought them a measure of joy or entertainment or, perhaps, an emotional lift.
Speaking of public response to my stories, the other day I was walking in the Escondido Library with a friend. When we separated for a few minutes (she wanted to go into the bookstore and I wanted to find a funny video), my friend told me later that an elderly couple came up to her and said, "Was that Frederick Gomez you were talking to?" When my friend answered in the affirmative, they told her, "We are big fans of his. We love all his stories!" Well, as corny as it may seem, when Lola told me this, I looked around but couldn't see them. Later, when we were about to leave, Lola said, "Friedrich! There they are, over by the newspaper racks." I saw two senior citizens, perhaps in their late 70s, maybe early 80s, both holding hands and slowly walking. They looked like the typical middleAmerica (Grandma-and-applepie) couple straight out of a Norman Rockwell painting. I

ly or you were a loyal friend, there were few who sat on the fence. “Without question a stone killer, an alcoholic and a whoremonger. He was known to cheat at cards,” one writer opined. Then there were those who said, “Few men of his character had more friends or stronger champions.” In 1907, Bat Masterson wrote, “Holliday had a mean disposition and an ungovernable temper, and under the influence of liquor – was a most dangerous man.”
No other fast-gun was more highly educated, nor more popular in Western movies than this man. From motion pictures, to television specials, to mountains of books, Doc Holliday seems ever-present in American folklore. His checkered life had a grisly beginning. He had a sister, Martha Eleanora Holliday, born December 3, 1849, who died at the age of six months. His mother died of tuberculosis, the same disease that killed his stepbrother, and the disease that would eventually claim him, as well. Diagnosed with tuberculosis he moved west to warmer climate to help offset his disease. There was a reason for his alcoholism. He increasingly depended on alcohol and laudanum to ease the symptoms of tuberculosis. Despite the ravages of alcohol and tuberculosis it is remarkable that his speed and accuracy with a handgun was beyond the level of his adversaries! Doc was a bona fide award-winning dentist, earning his Doctor of Dental Surgery from the Pennsylvania College of Dental Surgery, in 1872, at age 20. His brilliance made him wait five months -the college withheld his degree until he turned 21, the minimum age required to practice dentistry. Another attribute that made Holliday unusual for his day was his intellect. He was highly well-educated, affording him the unique ability to quote classical different languages. He received a strong classical education at the Valdosta Institute. He was wellversed in proper grammar and speaking English articulately, an uncommon attribute in the Wild West era. He was educated in mathematics, history, rhetoric, and four languages: English, French, Latin, and Ancient Greek! After saving Wyatt Earp’s life, they became life-long friends, though on a few occasions, Holliday offended Earp with his strong racial views against people of Jewish background. Wyatt Earp was not Jewish, but Earp’s woman (Josephine Marcus), was. Earp recited a Jewish prayer from the “mezuzah” (a parchment on the doorframe containing Hebrew verses from the Torah) upon entering the home of his Jewish businessman friend, Henry N. Jaffa. Holliday ignited a temporary split in his relationship with Wyatt when Doc quipped, “Earp is becoming a damn Jewboy.” Nevertheless the bond
between Wyatt and Doc Holliday would weather any storm of misunderstanding and they would, in fact, remain steadfast and loyal friends throughout their respective lifetimes. Doc Holliday is well recognized by Old West scholars as being lightning fast with a handgun and unbelievably accurate! In order to avoid murder charges, he developed the startling ability to not only outdraw his adversaries with remarkable speed, but, he developed the uncanny skill at disarming them by shooting their sidearms out of their hands, or shooting them in the hand or wrist! Even at a distance, he was deadly and shot to kill. All this, despite his alco-
holism, and his weakening physical constitution brought on by tuberculosis. Of all the fast-gun outlaws in history, Doc Holliday seems the most unlikely to make this list – and yet, he does!
There were many fast guns of the American Old West and I leave it to the qualified historians and the current fast-draw champions, today, to say who was the fastest of all. Only a handful make the short list: Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, Luke Short, Tom Horn, Billy the Kid, Wild Bill Hickok, and Frank North, to give a brief example.

Lyle . . . they actually asked me to autograph the two copies for them! The sprinklers went off again and I had to wipe the tears away. Did I really mean that much to them? I signed them both, "To Gerald Butler, Sr., all my best wishes! Thanks for being a fan!" I signed hers the same, with "To Margaret Butler . . . " You know, Lyle, a lot of people take our senior citizens for granted simply because they are old. A lot of people mistreat them or shame them or even take advantage of them, financially. To me, they are precious, and invaluable! As I was turning to leave with my friend, Lola, I looked over my shoulder and there they stood, the two of them, white haired, clasping The Paper with both hands and smiling from ear-toear just looking at it!

Back in college, where I began my theological studies, the professor would hand out a single sheet headed “Theological Terms.” It was always three columns, sometimes four. The words were mostly English, but because it was theology there were a few Hebrew words, some Greek terms, an occasional German word and the odd Latin phrase (but, then, most Latin phrases are odd). We had a couple of weeks to learn the terms before the next exam. There would be about twenty terms on the test, but there was no way to know which twenty, so
Later, in preaching classes in seminary, we were taught to communicate simply and avoid these long, multi syllabic, hard to understand words. I noticed, too, that hardly any of these words show up in scripture and that, as far as I can tell, Jesus never used any of them. In fact, Jesus specialized in short, simple words and sentences. For instance: “Come unto me.” “Do not be afraid.” “Be born again.” “Go into all the world.”
There’s the Gospel in fewer words than even one column of those lists of ponderous Theological Terms. And that’s the beauty of the Gospel that Jesus gave us in the scriptures. It is simple in words, simple to understand, simple to apply to our lives, but deep in its meaning and its result in every life.

Construction is nearing completion on Phase 1 of the Paseo Santa Fe Improvement Project. We are finally seeing our long-term plans to create a vibrant, pedestrianfriendly area along S. Santa Fe Avenue come to fruition. Residents and visitors alike can already see the transformation taking place with the new street lights, sidewalks, and the newly constructed Eucalyptus roundabout. We appreciate your patience as construction detours remain in place until the final paving of the road is completed in the next few weeks. The City Council has been vigilant
in setting aside funds to continue the vision of Paseo Santa Fe. These funds, combined with a total of $5.7 million in grants from the San Diego Association of Governments will help the city continue its transformation of S. Santa Fe Avenue from Oceanview Drive to Terrace Drive during Phase II. Vista’s second roundabout will be constructed at Guajome Street during this phase. The engineering and planning of Phase II will take place throughout 2016 and construction activity will begin in mid2017.
The City is still pursuing funding for the additional Phase III construction to continue the project to Civic Center Drive.

Windows 10, Microsoft’s latest OS (operating system) is by far the most controversial OS ever released. Microsoft’s frantic efforts to force the Windows10 free upgrade has cost consumers and businesses billions in lost time and computer support dollars. It appears that Microsoft has forgotten the wants and needs of its users in pursuit of its own agenda. Before we discuss the merits of Windows10 itself we need to step back in history to understand why and how Microsoft’s corporate strategies have become so completely detached from the realities of its users.

Microsoft’s decision to license rather than sell its OS must rank as one of the most brilliant single business decisions in history. That decision has carried Microsoft for the past 35years. Since 1982 over 90% of the Worlds PCs have run on Microsoft operating systems. Microsoft is today the third most valuable publicly held company in the world behind Google (Alphabet) and Apple. If Microsoft’s 1980 decision was pure genius, the past two decades have seen Microsoft’s corporate IQ drop to below 80. Perhaps the wealth and fame derived from the success of the DOS and Windows made them soft and dull but Microsoft has consistently failed to take advantage of its dominant position in PC operating systems to exploit opportunities provided by changing technologies. Time and time again Microsoft has been late to recognize trends and to exploit its “catbird seat” in OS technology.

Netbooks were introduced in 2007. These small inexpensive PCs were the precursor to tablets. When manufacturers approached Microsoft for a low cost version of Windows to run these low powered PCs they were rebuffed. Microsoft saw no future in these tiny PCs and certainly did not want to cut the average price of its OS from $50 to the under $10 price needed for low cost netbooks. Netbook manufactures were forced to install free versions of Linux (Ubuntu) and free “open office.” As consumers flocked to purchase these wildly popular inexpensive, WiFi connected devices, Microsoft suddenly realized that a whole bunch of people were
discovering that they really didn’t need Microsoft Windows or Microsoft Office Suites. Microsoft quickly reversed their position offering nearly free versions of Windows to the netbook makers. Within months the threat was crushed and netbooks came with a version of Windows. As we approached the end of the “PC Era” and the beginning of the smart phone revolution Microsoft had become a mistake prone, stodgy, introverted bureaucracy incapable of seeing or reacting to market opportunities. They were fat cats “cash cowing” their past and groping clumsily at the future. Next week we continue down the “Rocky Road to Win10.”
In the 90s Microsoft failed to recognize the importance of the WWW allowing Netscape and others to pioneer Internet browsers. Fortunately for Microsoft, when they finally did wake up, they were able to squash the competition by incorporating Internet Explorer (IE) as a part of their Windows OS. The San Marcos Senior Activity Center has been serving lunches at the Discovery Café to persons 60 years of age and older through the federally funded Senior Nutrition Program (Program) for over 20 years.
Through this RFP, the City is looking to rebrand, improve and expand the Discovery Café to appeal to a broader senior audience. The combination of social interaction and nutritious meals is vital to their ability to avoid isolation and live independently with confidence and vitality. The City would like to find an on or offsite caterer willing and committed to being a working partner in the efforts to enhance the lunch program. It is important the caterer understands the needs of senior bodies, taste buds and dietary essentials, and can offer options such as vegetarian, gluten free, and flavorful meals in accordance with the nutritional guidelines established by the AIS, and the health and safety standards and regulations of Title III of the Older Americans Act, the Food & Nutrition Board, National Academy of Sciences-National Research Council and the USDA and the U.S. Dept. of Health & Human Services. GENERAL All clarifications of the RFP by the Agency will be made by written addendum and will be posted on www.CIPList.com no later than three (3) calendar days prior to the proposal due date. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that on March 8, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers located at 1 Civic Center Drive, San Marcos, California 92069, the San Marcos City Council will hold a public hearing regarding the condemnation and possession of certain real property interests for road improvements within the University District Specific Plan Area. The City Council will consider:
1. Whether the public interest and necessity require the proposed project. 2. Whether the proposed project is planned or located in the manner that will be most compatible with the greatest public good and the least private injury.
3. Whether the property sought to be acquired is necessary for the project. 4. Whether an offer as required by Section 7267.2 of the Government Code has been made to the owner(s) of record.
The property that is the subject of this hearing includes 197199 South Twin Oaks Valley Road (Assessor Parcel Numbers 221-110-39, 51, 52 & 53).
