Administration

Scott Rich has been Sterling College’s president since 2013. Rich joined the College in 2008, serving as chief

financial officer where he provided leadership and oversaw finance, human resources, physical plant among other

obligations, before being inaugurated as Sterling’s 12th president.

Before the College, Rich has served in a variety of leadership and management roles in both the for-profit and

non-profit world. He brings with him a rich understanding of budget and production management and financial reporting.

Rich holds a master’s in business administration from Liberty University and a doctorate in organizational management and education from North Central University. He and his wife, Kathy, are actively involved in their local church. They have three sons that are all Sterling College alumni.

Justin Morris moved into his role as the Director of Athletic Operations in 2019 after serving as assistant athletic director for seven years and the head coach of the women’s soccer team for 20 years. He has also served the College in the following roles: head men’s soccer coach, head tennis coach, sports information director and admissions counselor in various points in his career. In his final season of active coaching, Morris earned his 200th win as a head coach. Morris is also the winningest men’s and women’s soccer coach in school history.

In his role at Sterling, Morris’ responsibilities include overseeing the day-to-day operations of the athletic department and continuing Sterling’s strong community support through local partnerships.

In his time as assistant athletic director, Morris oversaw and served as the director of the Warrior Wood and Wedge golf tournament, the single largest annual fundraising event for Warrior Athletics. The event generates funding for many athletic department projects and enhancements. Additionally, Morris oversaw the sports information office and he was responsible for advertising for Warrior Athletics. He also assisted the Sterling College Alumni Association in keeping former student-athletes engaged with the College.

He currently serves on the following boards: Sterling-Alden E Communities and Sterling Country Club.

Morris holds a B.S. in Physical Education from Sterling College. He and his wife, Karna, have three children: Christina, Kayla and Cameron. They reside in Sterling. He also has two grandchilden, Porter and Piper.

Scott Downing ’79 is Sterling’s Vice President for Athletics. In his role at Sterling, Downing’s responsibilities include providing the strategic vision for Warrior Athletics and fundraising support to allow Sterling to consistently compete for championships. He provides long-range planning for Warrior Athletics and ensure compliance with the rules and regulations governing the operation of the athletic programs. Downing oversees an athletic department that features 23 teams and over 400 student-athletes.

Downing comes to Sterling from Liberty University where he served as special teams coordinator for their football team. He brings almost 40 years of coaching experience at the highest collegiate levels, including seven as head coach. Downing and Justin Morris ’00 form the Warrior Athletics’ executive leadership team.

Downing returned to his alma mater where he started his football coaching career in 1980 as the offensive line coach. In 1982, he was named head football coach at Sterling, becoming the youngest head coach in the nation. During his two seasons at the helm of the Warriors’ program, Sterling posted a 13-4-1 record and received the program’s first-ever NAIA top-20 national ranking.

Stops in Downing’s coaching career include at the University of Nebraska, the University of Wyoming and Purdue University, head coach at the University of Northern Colorado for five seasons followed by moving on to the University of Tulsa as assistant head coach. Prior to joining the staff at Liberty University, Downing served as special teams coordinator for the Canadian Football League’s Toronto Argonauts.

Downing holds a B.A. in History from Sterling College. He and his wife, Karen, have three children, Matthew, Andrew and Zachary.

Administration

K.C. Bassett has been at the helm of the Lady Warrior’s basketball program since the 201415 season. She was named Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman Leader in 2021 and also serves on the Athletic Leadership team.

Coach Bassett is in a superb stretch of basketball success. She currently has had seven consecutive winning seasons. She has also made five consecutive appearances at the NAIA National Tournament and won three straight KCAC regular season titles. She has won two KCAC Tournament titles in the same stretch.

One of the most solid seasons of her career came in the 2020-21 season. The Lady Warriors went 30-1,and Coach Bassett was named Lonnie Kruse KCAC Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year, KBCA 4 Year Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year, and NAIA WBCA NAIA Coach of the Year for the success of that season.

From 2003-2007, K.C. was a four-year starter and twice captain on Sterling College teams that won two conference championships and one KCAC tournament championship. Her teams made three trips to the NAIA National Tournament. K.C. earned KCAC Freshman of the Year and honorable mention All-Conference and ended her senior campaign [2006-2007] as the KCAC’s Player of the Year and a third-team NAIA All-American.

K.C. is Sterling College women basketball’s second all-time assist leader [549]. In October 2016, Coach Bassett was inducted into the Sterling College Athletics Hall of Fame for her SC playing career.

In July 2015, Coach Bassett was named KCAC Champion of Character Coach of the Year.

A Sterling native, Deb Wiebe has been the office manager for the athletic department since 1995. Wiebe has been the glue that holds Warrior Athletics together.

A long time Warrior supporter, Wiebe and her family have been involved with the Sterling athletic program since 1988 as foster parents for Warrior athletes.

Deb and her husband, Curt, have two children, Brenna and Derek.

Brenna married alumnus, Brandon Winn 99’ and has two children, Morgan and Rylie. Derek and his wife Megan have two children, Ridge and Tate.

The Wiebe family resides in Sterling.

Aaron Weber came to Sterling College in May 2019. At that time he served as Director of Development for his first 2 years at the College. In those two years, Weber was a part of an Advancement team that saw growth in the Sterling Fund in back-to-back years. He also saw the beginning and completion of the expansion and renovation of the Gleason Center.

Weber works to be involved in the local community where he served as President of the Rota

ry Club of Sterling in the 2021-21 year and is a member of the board for the Sterling Cham ber of Commerce.

A native of Dakota, Illinois, Weber received an Associates in Bible from Hesston College (Hesston, KS), a Bachelor of Science in Sport Management from Taylor University (Upland, IN) and a Master of Science in Sport Management from Jacksonville State University (Jacksonville, AL).

Women’s Basketball Head Coach: K.C. Bassett

K.C. Bassett has been at the helm of the Lady Warrior’s basketball program since the 2014-15 season. She was

One of the most solid seasons of her career came in the 2020-21 season. The Lady Warriors went 30-1, going undefeated in the regular season. The only loss came in the NAIA National Tournament. The Lady Warriors finished the season ranked 9th in the NAIA National Polls. Coach Bassett was named Lonnie Kruse KCAC Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year, KBCA 4 Year Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year, and NAIA WBCA NAIA Coach of the Year for the success of that season.

Bassett has seen a number of her student-athletes be named to the NAIA All-American team, NAIA Academic All-American team, and KCAC Player of the Year.

Prior to becoming the head women’s basketball coach, Bassett was an assistant coach for the Lady Warriors for seven years under the tutelage of NAIA, Kansas, and Sterling College Hall of Famer Lonnie Kruse. During her time as an assistant, Bassett helped Sterling attain a combined record of 146-72, winning the KCAC Regular Season Championship four times, the KCAC Women’s Basketball Tournament five times, and making it to the NAIA National Tournament five different seasons.

From 2003-2007, K.C. was a four-year starter and twice captain on Sterling College teams that finished with a combined record of 99-28 [78%] and won two conference championships and one KCAC tournament championship. Her teams made three trips to the NAIA National Tournament where they finished in the Sweet Sixteen twice and Elite Eight once. K.C. began her playing career in 2003-2004 as KCAC Freshman of the Year and honorable mention All-Conference and ended her senior campaign [2006-2007] as the KCAC’s Player of the Year and a third-team NAIA All-American. During her Sterling career, she was named to three KCAC All-Conference First Teams and earned NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors, twice.

K.C. is Sterling College women basketball’s all-time assist leader [549] and ninth all-time leading scorer [1,374]. In spring 2007, K.C. graduated summa cum laude and Sterling College’s Outstanding Student of the Year. She received the Professor Fran Jabara Leadership Award and was named the Sterling College Woman Athlete of Year.

In October 2016, Coach Bassett was inducted into the Sterling College Athletics Hall of Fame for her SC playing career.

In July 2015, Coach Bassett was named KCAC Champion of Character Coach of the Year.

In addition to coaching, K.C. teaches Sports Psychology each semester for the Exercise Science program and has co-led mission trips for SC athletes to Panama, Nicaragua, and Alaska (twice).

Before Sterling College, K.C. attended Immaculata High School in Leavenworth, KS, where she played basketball and volleyball for four years. She is the Lady Raiders’ all-time leading assist leader and third all-time leading scorer. Prior to high school, K.C. was starting point guard on a Kansas Belles AAU basketball team that finished three seasons in the elite eight at AAU national championship tournaments. During her seven-year AAU career, K.C. earned Missouri Valley age-group player of the year honors, twice.

take pride in the family created at SC in our Athletic Training Program.” Pete was most recent

ly named the KCAC Athletic Trainer of the Year for 2015-2016, Pete was named NAIA ATA

Athletic Trainer of the Year for the 2010-2011 academic year, was inducted into the

Barton County Community College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2015, was named the Sterling College McCreery Teacher of the Year in 2015, and is the President Elect of the NAIA ATA Board and Co-Chair of the NAIA Council for Student Athletes. He loves working with the faculty and staff, who are such an incredible support group. Pete enjoys many activities in his free time including music, reading, BBQ competitions/catering and eating out with friends; however, all of those are secondary to marrying the love of his life, Kay Manely. Pete and Kay have three beautiful children Cord (SC 2020 Alum), Brielle, and Braylen. His hometown is Lebanon, KS.

Men’s Basketball Coach Stange - Head Coach- Year 2

Randy Stange came to Sterling for the 2022-23 season and is entering his second year at the helm of the Warrior Men’s Basketball team.

In his first season as head coach, Stange took a team that won two games the previous season and finished with a 17-17 record, a fifteen game improvement. The season culminated with an NCCAA National tournament appearance. Highlighting the season were a pair of NAIA Top 25 upsets, one of which 12th ranked Kansas Wesleyan University home early in the KCAC Conference tournament.

Stange came to Sterling from Johnson County Community College where he served as Athletic Director

After a stellar high school career at Nickerson, Stange became a Blue Dragon under head coach Gary Bargen. While an HCC player, the Blue Dragons were 46-15, including an incredible 30-3 record at the Sports Arena. Stange scored 560 points in his career. In his sophomore season, Stange averaged 11.8 points and 3.6 assists per game. He also played tennis for the Blue Dragons.

After graduating from Hutchinson Community College, Stange went on to have a stellar career a Missouri State University. He was the first player recruited by Charlie Spoonhour and was a key member of the Bear’s backcourt. Stange set the season mark for free throw accuracy his junior year with a .909 figure and averaged 10.4 points a game. That earned him a spot on the Mid-Continent Conference all-newcomer team for the 18-10 Bears.

Once his playing days were complete, Stange jumped into the coaching profession, which eventually brought him back to Hutchinson. Hired shortly before the 1994-95 season, Stange spent three seasons on the Blue Dragons bench. He posted an 85-20 record, tied for a Jayhawk West title in 1995and his 1997 team won Region VI and qualified for the NJCAA Tournament.

Under his watch, Stange coached Nate Erdman a 1997 2nd round NBA Draft pick by the Utah Jazz, and Demetrius Alexander, who was an honorable mention NJCAA All-American. Stange also had several Blue Dragons earn All-Jayhawk Conference honors.

Before returning to Hutchinson, Stange served as an assistant coach at Kansas State University under Lon Kruger for the 1985-86 season. He then joined the staff at Missouri State and St. Louis University under his old college coach, Charlie Spoonhour, before the 1986-87 season.

During his five seasons on the Bears staff, Missouri State won Mid-Continent titles in 1988, 1989, and 1990 with three straight trips to the NCAA Tournament. In 1990 the Bears joined the Missouri Valley Conference and made an NIT appearance in 1991 and won the MVC tournament to return to the NCAA Tournament field in 1992.

When Spoonhour went to St. Louis University before the 1992-93 season, Stange followed and spent two seasons at SLU before returning to Hutchinson. The 1993-94 St. Louis University basketball team that Stange was part of went into the Billiken Hall of Fame in 2005.

After coaching, Stange spent several years as Athletic Director at Hutchinson Community College where he served until 2015. During his 18-year tenure at Hutchinson, Blue Dragon athletics won 33 Jayhawk Conference championships, 28 Region VI championships in all sports, and 128 teams earned NJCAA Championship berths, with 10 finishing in the top five nationally. Additionally, the football team appeared in nine bowl games, winning eight times, and 15 players over that span went on to play in the NFL. He also played a major role in the Gowan’s Stadium renovation project.

Cord Harrington- Head Coach- 2nd Season Cord Harrington enters his second season as head coach of the

Men’s and Women’s Swim team.

In his first season as head coach, Harrington led a return trip to

the NAIA National tournament where he coached one NAIA All-Ameri can.

Harrington is no stranger to Sterling College athletics. He has been an assistant on the Swimming coaching staff for the last year and was on the team while earning his degree from Sterling College. Prior to becoming a coach for the swim team, Harrington was a student assistant for the Women’s basketball program as well.

JESSICA SAIZ- HEAD COACH- 3RD SEASON Saiz begins her second season leading the Warrior Cheer Team, returning

to Sterling College after being the head cheer coach for six years, from

2011-2017. Saiz was key in helping develop the cheer program before

taking over for the Sterling High School cheer team. Saiz has years of expe ience in the cheer world, spending time with Sterling High School, the Sali na Kansas Cagerz, Barton County Community College, and Sterling College.

Saiz is a Sterling native and graduated from Sterling High School in 2007. She has three children, Brentley, Brock, and Braylee. She Married Eric Saiz, SC alumni ‘06, in 2021 and adds Jaelynn, Amalia, Eliana, and Micah to the family. Her husband Eric is currently the Assistant Linebackers coach on the Warrior Football staff.
