新山春 节 购 物

一日游 每

日奔波于 忙碌 的生 活 之 中 ，大 家 少 有 机 会 歇 息 出 游 。恰 逢 春 节 来 临 ， 也望慰劳义工们对寺院的 一 路 扶 持 ，本 寺 护 法 义 工 团 队特 筹 办 新山 春节购 物 一日 游 ，带 领 40余 位 护 法 们 跨 境 游 新 山 ，采 购 年 货 、探 寻 美 味 素 食 、感 受 别 具 一 格 的 新 春氛围。 清 晨 ，一 行 人 怀 着 愉 悦 的 心 情乘 坐巴士前 往 柔佛 新山。 回想起 加入 光明山普觉禅寺 的 契 机 ，大 家 分 享 了 各 自 的 经 历 ：“ 我 希 望 透 过 参 与 义 工活 动为大 家提 供 服 务或帮 助 。”“ 皈 依 受 戒 后 ，我 就 到 修 福 轩 当 义 工 ，随 后 也 参 加

了 佛 法 课 程 。这 一 切 坚 定 了 我 对 佛 法 的 信 念 ，也 启 迪 了 我 对生 命 意 义 的 理 解！” 抵 达 新 山 吃 了 早 餐 后 ，大 家 启程前往柔佛古来县的普陀 村，在竹 意 盎 然 的 大自然中探 索 菩 提 港。 “ 本以 为只 是 趟 购 物 旅 程 ，没 想 到 主 办 团 队 会 安 排 我 们 参 访 普 陀 村 ，这 是 我一直 想 要来的 地 方！” 中 午，大 家 前 往 新 山 佰 乐 泰 商场与五福城 购 物商场逛 街 。各 式 各 样 的 新 年 吊 饰 与 年饼摊还有络绎不绝的人 潮 ，弥 漫 着 浓 浓 的 新 春 氛 围 。购 物 与 晚 餐 结 束 后 ，大 家便乘坐巴士返回狮城。

于 1 月 20日举办的春节购物一日游 活 动 ，为 护 法 义 工 们 留 下 了 美 好 回忆与团结情谊。

银针下的

仁心仁义 每

月农 历 廿 七 的 早 晨 ，寺 院 的鼓 楼外总会出现 排 队 等 候 的 信 众 。上 午 九 时 开 始 ，大 家 便 陆 续 登 记 并 踏 入 义 诊 室 ，开 始 接 受 傅 志 平 医 师 的 诊 疗。 在 成 为 中 医 师 前 ，傅 医 师 原 先 在 电 子 产 业 工 作 ，对 医 疗 服务满怀热 忱的他选择 继 续 进 修 ，利 用 每 天 下 班 后 的 空 闲 时 间 到 中 华 医 院 上 课 。学 医 五 年 后 ，傅 医 师 于 1988年 毕 业 ，并 正 式 投 身 到 中 医 药 事 业 当中。

光明山普觉禅寺于每月农历廿七， 上午 9 时至 12 时，为65岁或以 上的 乐龄人士提供免费针灸服务。

秉 着 医 者 仁 心 的 信 念 ，傅 医 师 加 入了佛 教 施 诊 所 的 大 家 庭 ，目 前 在 三 巴 旺 分 所 提 供 服 务。从 医 三十 六 年，他 接 触 过 不 同 类 型 的 患 者 ，以 五 十 肩 、中 风 、秃 头、坐 骨 神 经 痛 或 肢体 痛 麻 的患者居多。 只 见傅 医师 的 拇指与食 指 稳 稳 地 捏 住 针 尾 ，柔 和 地 调 整 针 刺 的 深 度 ，耐 心 地 替 七 十 二岁的 许 师兄针 灸 。 “自2006 年开始我的手脚就不怎么好， 吃了西药也没有太大的帮 助 。直 到 一次 机 缘 巧 合，我 到

佛 教 施 诊 所 尝 试 针 灸 ，痛 麻 的 情 况 才 稍 有 好 转。”许 师兄 在 尝 试 针灸 后，发 现自己更能 接 受中医的 温和 疗 法。 “ 一 些 患者原 本只能 坐 在 轮 椅 上 ，但 我 看 到 他 们 在 接 受 治 疗 后 可 以 独 自 站 立 ，并 渐 渐 地 康 复，我感到很 有成 就 感， 也 很 欣 慰 。”傅 医 师 怀 着 同 体 大 悲 的 精 神 ，不 分 种 族 或 宗 教 帮 助 有 需 要 的 人 ，以 妙 手 仁 心 实 践 慈 悲 真谛。 “有的诊所看病动辄就要上 百 元 ，这 让 那 些 经 济 困 难 的 家 庭 很 难 负 担 得 起 。看 到 他 人 痛 苦 ，我 们 也 会 心 生 怜 悯 ，所 以 我 希 望 通 过 这 样 的 方 式 帮 助 有 需 要 的 人 。”对 于 免 费 义 诊 ，傅 医 师 也 希 望 尽己所能帮助有情。 自 2023年 8月起 ，傅 志 平 医 师 配合 佛 教 施诊所的安排，每月 农 历廿七都会到访光明山普 觉 禅 寺，为65岁及以 上 的乐 龄 人 士 提 供 免 费 针 灸 服 务 。如 有兴 趣 者，欢 迎于 每月农 历廿 七 上 午 九 时 至 中 午 十二 时 前 来本寺鼓 楼 接 受 诊 疗。

he KMS Dharma School welcomes the 2024 Primary and Secondary School students’ intake with open arms. The school's commitment to fostering spiritual development and well-being through joyful learning, practice and sharing within a supportive and inspiring Buddhist environment has struck a chord with parents seeking a holistic education for their children.

Supported by a dedicated team of teaching and nonteaching volunteers, the KMS Dharma School is positioned to deliver an education that is deeply rooted in Buddhist principles, focusing on instilling values for a purposeful life for its students.

a comprehensive approach that not only focuses on the students but actively involves parents in the learning journey. It offers a range of programs, including examination blessings and graduation days, Vesak celebrations as well as spiritual camps and outings.

These activities aim to provide students with diverse experiences, enabling them to grow and blossom from the seeds of awakening planted within them.

Derek Keh, an 18-year-old in the Mentorship Programme, shared: "I feel happy attending the Dharma School.

The school provides a good environment, along with yummy vegetarian meals.

Learning about Buddhism has positively influenced my behaviour, making me more mindful in my actions and

Parent Tan Mei Ling notes the positive impact of weekly Dharma classes, stating, "Attending these classes has enriched my children's mental well-being by helping them subdue negative thoughts and manage anger. Most importantly, it instils values of kindness and compassion, and promotes positive interactions among them."

As the school continues cultivating good values, it plays a vital role in nurturing social and emotional development during formative years. The appeal to parents is clear: tend to the garden of this budding Buddhist community with loving mindfulness.

Venerable-Led Retreats At

Prajna Meditation Hall

n the serene ambience of Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery's Prajna Meditation Hall, we had the privilege of hosting two esteemed Venerables from the Thai Forest traditions for our meditation retreats. In December 2023, participants were guided by Ajahn Vīradhammo, the Abbot of Tisarana, while in January 2024 we welcomed Ajahn Vajiro, the Abbot of Sumedhārāma.

Ajahn Viradhammo guided participants on a profound journey of selfdiscovery, focusing on desire exploration. The nonresidential format enabled attendees to immerse themselves in meditation, providing fresh perspectives and heightened mindfulness, fostering a deeper connection with their inner selves.

In January, Ajahn Vajiro continued the transformative journey by introducing participants to the concept of cultivating the Ten Perfections. Delving into these virtues, he

demonstrated how they shape the right attitudes for practising the Dharma, and enriching daily life. The retreat provided a dedicated space for self-discovery and spiritual growth.

Reflections from participants of both retreats shared unique insights about the programme. Ms. Eugenia Heng shared a significant moment when Ajahn Vīradhammo posed the question: "What is the fulfilment of the spiritual life?"

According to her recollection, the answer was love, emphasising the importance of embracing the way things are and finding the middle way through acceptance and compassion.

Ms. Zhang Yaou, a 38-yearold architect, found the retreat enriching, peaceful and engaging. Mr. Charles Loke, a seasoned retreatgoer, embraced the teachings on patience and acceptance, planning to integrate them into his daily life through consistent

meditation and mindfulness.

First-time participant Mr. Soo Weng Loong described the retreat as a revelation in his quest for an adept meditation teacher and inner peace. He highlighted the importance of a balanced retreat blending guided meditation with self-practice and expressed gratitude for the conducive environment at Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery.

Ms. Amita Boo, aged 60, shared her transformative experience under Ajahn Vajiro’s guidance. She found magical moments in time and a breakthrough in open-eye (open-awareness) meditation, highlighting its value as a tool for daily life, applicable anytime, anywhere, and offering a window for personal time and inner peace.

/ 意解人生

在

过 去 的 一 整 年 里 ，见 到了很多生离 死别。 不 管 是 因 为 疫 情 也 好，生 病 也 好 ，意 外 也 好 ，死 亡 无 不 让 世 人 痛 心 疾 首 ，皆 会 感 叹 生 命 的 无 常 与 脆 弱 。而 最 痛 心 的 ，莫 过 于 猝 不 及 防 的 离 世 ，我 们 连 说 再 见 的 机 会 都 没 有。 其 实 ，我 们 从 未 好 好 地 面 对 死 亡 ，活 着 的 时 候 也 从 没 想 过自己要 死 的 时 候 该 怎么 办 。毫 无 准 备 ，必 定 是 无 法 让此生在结束时做到坦荡与 从容 。 不过死亡并不是真正意义上 的 结 束 ，而 是 另 一 场 生 命 的 开 始 。我 们 皆 是 缘 分 和 合 而 生 ，生 即 无 生 ，一 切 诸 法 不生 不 灭 、不 增 不 减 ，悟 到 了，就 了生 死 。 世间凡人的生命都被一股 无 形 的 力 量 牵 引 ，比 如 生 在 什 么样 的人 家，什 么 人做 父 母， 是 男 是 女 ，将 来 是 否 健 康 有 钱 有 才 华，做 什 么 职 业 ，和 什 么 人 结 婚，何 时 命 终 等 等。 佛 经 云：“ 假 使 百 千 劫 ，所 作 业不 亡，因 缘 会 遇 时，果 报 还 自受 。” 这 个 世 界 最 公 平 ，因 为 有 因 果 。种 瓜 得 瓜 ，种 豆 得 豆 。自 己 现 在 是 什 么 样 子，和 以 前 的 自 己 必 然 有 关 联 。比 如 喜 欢 赌 博 的 ，投 胎 还 会 去 做 赌

徒；喜 欢 喝 酒 的，投 胎 定 会 去 做 酒 鬼 ；那 么 有 些 人 小 时 候 就 才 华了得，那 是 因 为“ 书 到 今 生 读 已 迟 ”，那 孩 子 必定以 前 也 是 读 书 人 ，早 年 积 累 了 很 多学 问 。 人 在 这 个 世 界 上 活 着 ，得 先 学 会 认 命 ，接 受 因 果 。认 命 了，接 受 了，再 受 什 么 艰 难 困 苦，忍 忍 就 过 去了，不 会 再 起 什 么 恶 念 、怨 恨 、计 较 ，也 不 会 常 常 问自己：“ 为 什 么 我 人 这 么 好 ，平 白 无 故 受 这 么 多 委 屈 和 苦 难 ？”过 好 日 子 的 时 候 ，也会 懂 得 珍 惜。福 气 就 像 是 存 在 银 行 里 的 钱 ，用 完 了，也 就 完 了。不 懂 得 存 ，也 就 有 苦日子 在 后头 等 着。

凡人的生活 本来就是苦乐参半， 不曾经历过苦难， 又怎能懂得生存的 意义和珍惜来之不易 的幸福美好呢？ 一 饮 一 啄 ，莫 非 前 定 。所 以 活 着 就 是 要“ 随 缘 消 旧 业 ， 莫 更 造 新 殃 ”。 慢 慢 练习放 下，放 下自己 对这 个 世 界 各 种 事 情 的 看 法 ，放 下 心 里 抓 着 不 放 的 东 西 ，放 下 陈 年 累 积 的 习 惯 ，放 下 自 己 对 一 切 事 物 的 判 断 ，不 纠 结 或 执 着 善 恶、美 丑、是 非 、 黑 白 、对 错 … … 练 习 放 下 就

是 修 行 。哪 一 日 悟 道 ，就 会 发 现 原 来 这个 世 上 什 么 事 情 也 没 有 ，都 是 我 们 脑 子 里 无 尽 的 分 别 、攀 缘 、执 着、妄 想 等。 “狂心 若歇，歇即菩 提”， 哪日我 们 的 心 不 闹 腾了，这个 世界就 太平了。 当然 ，还 没 悟 道 之 前，得 好 好 活 着，找 机 会 悟 道 ，把 自己 的

短 歌 行 心点 亮 ，不 然白白做 人一场 。 我们这个世界叫“娑婆世界”， 就 是“ 堪 忍 ”。凡 人 的 生 活 本 来 就 是 苦 乐 参 半 ，不 曾 经 历 过 苦 难 ，又 怎 能 懂 得 生 存 的 意 义和 珍 惜 来 之不 易的 幸 福 美好呢？

白 日 何 短 短 ，百 年 苦 易 满 。 苍 穹 浩 茫 茫 ，万 劫 太 极 长 。 麻 姑 垂 两 鬓 ，一 半 已 成 霜 。 天 公 见 玉 女 ，大 笑 亿 千 场 。 吾 欲 揽 六 龙 ，回 车 挂 扶 桑 。 北 斗 酌 美 酒 ，劝 龙 各 一 觞 。 富 贵 非 所 愿 ，与 人 驻 颜 光 。

其 实 ，这个 世 界 本 就 美 好！最 后 送 上李白的 短 歌 行：

时 光 会 很 快 地 过 去 ，即 使 有 百 岁 的 生 命 ，也 不 过 是 短 短

的 瞬 间 。想 想 怎 么 好 好 地 活 着，心 里 面 能 清 清 楚 楚 。“ 富 贵 非 所 愿 ，与人 驻 颜 光 。”我 也 在 此 祈 愿 ，祝 大 家 福 寿 绵 长 ，所愿皆成 就 ，美 满 安 康！

好 朋 友 去 看了短 道 速 滑 世 界 杯 比 赛 。不 去 不 知 道 ，现 场 可 比 看 电 视 精 彩 多 了 ！无 论 是 紧 张 刺 激 的 气 氛 节 奏 、应 援 助 威 的 火 热 程 度 ，还 是 运 动 员 高 超 的 技 术和拼搏坚持的意志品质， 着 实 让 我 体 验了一 把 速 度 与 激 情。 要 说 短 道 速 滑 的 魅 力 ，我 觉 得 除了 酷 炫 的 速 度与超 越 以 外，还 充满了戏 剧 性的变化 。 这 无 疑 是 最 扣 人 心 弦 的 ，因 为稍 有 不慎 就可能 被 碰 撞 出 赛 道 而 痛 失名 次 。所 以 ，在 短 道 速 滑 的 赛 场 上 ，运 气 似 乎 格 外 重 要 ，不 到 最 后 一 刻 什 么状 况 都 有 可能 发 生 。

如果把人生 比作一场短道 速滑比赛，那么先到 达终点的人，到底是 赢还是输呢？ 看着运 动员们呼啸驰 骋于冰 面 ，拼 尽 全 力 只 为 能 第 一 个 冲 过 终 点 ，我 忽 然 想 到 了一 个 比 喻 ：如 果 把 人 生 比 作 一 场 短 道 速 滑 比 赛 ，那 么 先 到 达 终 点 的 人 ，到 底 是 赢 还 是 输呢？ 也 许 ，这 就 要 看 终 点 的 所 在 了。若 把 终 点 设 在 时 间 轴 上 ，那 是 要 拼 寿 命 长 短 的 ， 所 以 越 晚 到 达 越 是 赢 家 ，如

此 一 来 ，活 了 8 8 0 岁 的 彭 祖 乃 当 仁 不 让 的 冠 军 ；若 把 终 点 设 在 名 利 轴 中 ，那 在 盖 棺 定 论 之 时 ，唯 有 地 位 显 赫 或 是富可 敌 国者才 有资格 榜上 有 名 ；若 是 终 点 设 在 智 慧 轴 里 ，注 意 这 里 的 智 慧 并 不 是 指 聪 明 才 智，而是了知 生 命真 谛 的 般 若 之智，那 么 ，恐 怕 绝 大多数 人都 还尚在 赛 道 上一 圈 一 圈 地 轮 回 ，能 够 到 达 终 点 的 凤 毛 麟 角 。而 且 那 些 因 为 自 己 的 心 思 、利 益 不 惜 去 恶 意 犯 规 的 人 ，是 会 受 到 惩 罚 影 响 比 赛 进 度 的 。不 过 ，当 一 个人 积 攒 了 足 够 的 福 德 因 缘 ，便 会 遇 到 有 经 验 的 教 练 和 优 秀 的 队 友 ，在 他 们 的 帮 助下，每 一 个弯 道都 可能 成 为 超 越 、冲 线 的 机会。 说 到 这 里 ，想 必 很 多人 都 会 把时间轴或名利轴上的终点 作为评 判比赛输赢的标 准， 因 为它 不仅看得见 、摸 得着、 享 受 得 到 ，更 是 人 们 欲 望 之 所 向 。至 于 般 若 智 慧 ，那 又 是 什 么 呢 ？能 当 饭 吃 吗 ？即 使 生 命 再 长 也 有 尽 头 ，地 位 再 高 也 会 被 替 代 ，金 钱 再 多 也 有 买 不 到 的 东 西 。这 时 候 ，烦 恼 就 出 现了，并且 越 是 执 着 在 意 ，越 是 烦 恼 丛 生 。 有 统 计 ，人 在 一 天 之 中 至 少 会 生 起 二十 六 种 烦 恼 。其 实 细 想 想 ，虽 然 具 体 情 节 会 有 所 差 别 ，但 人 们 的 烦 恼 大 抵 如 此 — — 生 、老 、病 、死 、怨 憎 会、爱 别 离 、求 不 得 。倘 若

不 能 认 清 烦 恼 的 真 相 ，其 往 往 终 身相 伴 、如 影 随 形，不论 国 王、平民 、富人 还 是 乞丐。 般 若 之智，虽 不 能 果 腹 ，却 能 让 人 的“ 灵 性 ”富 足 ，一旦 开 启，烦 恼 无 存。因 为 智 者已 经 看 清 了 世 间 的 本 来 面 目 ，知 晓 因 缘 和 合 的 事 物皆为缘 聚 而 生 、缘 散 则 灭 ，不 能 永 恒 存 在 ，正 所 谓“ 缘 起 性 空 ”。 所以 万 事 万物 包括自己的 身 体 ，终 逃 不 开 生 ( 产 生 ) 、 住 ( 稳 定 ) 、异 ( 变 异 ) 、灭 ( 消 亡 )的 过 程 ，而 人 生 不 过 是 一 场 虚 幻 之 梦 罢了。因 此 ，他 们 心无 所 住 ，不 落 假 相 ，随 缘 度 日，除 此 无 他 。 " 饥 来 吃 饭 困 来 眠 " ，这 话 句 听 起 来 平 平 无 奇 ，甚 至 有 点 废 话 文 学 的 意 思 ，可 实 则 蕴 含 着 智 慧 的 根 本 、修 行 的 要 诀 。哪 一 天 读 懂 了，也 就 开 启 了 般 若 智 慧 ，发 现 了 自 家 宝 藏 ，在 短 道 速 滑 的 比 赛 中 也 就 能“心无 挂 碍 ”了。

色 苍 茫 ，乱 云 流 淌 在 霞光汇成的湖泊里， 安 静沉 稳 或许 是 苍穹今日的 心 情 。落日褪 去，只 剩 下余 晖 掠 过 人 间 的 美 丽 和 我 的日常 身 影 。我 在 半 推 半 就 的 车 厢 里 ，看 着人 群 平 淡 散 去，又 如 潮 水 涌 进 ，匆 忙 的 脚 步 和 重 叠 的 人 群 ，在 没 日 没 夜 的 错 过 又 交 集 。我 在 想 ，生 命 步 伐 的 快 或 慢 ，是 否 值 得 我 们 在意。 在 夕 阳 与 皎 月 交 班 之 际 ，我 到 站下 车了。刷 着社 交 媒体， 一 则 2 2 岁 女 子 的 自杀 新 闻 映 入 眼 帘 ，心 情 竟 也 随 着 手 扶 梯 的 幅 度 缓 缓 下 沉 。绝 笔 下 的 临 终之言满 是自责 愧 疚 ， 字里行间 都是 生命凋 零 的哀 切 。晚 餐 时 不 断 思 索 着 她 的 孤 独 无 助 感 ，还 有 纷 飞 杂 乱 的 网 络 留 言 。流 离 的 灵 魂 决 定 不 再 羁 绊 尘 世 ，逆 境 中 的 她 选 择 离 开 亲 友 和 世 界 。我 在 想 ，生 命 运 转 的 顺 或 逆 ， 是否值得我们在意。 晚 饭 后 ，我 细 听 夜 雨 突 袭 城 市 的 节 律 ，湿 气 中 夹 带 的 寂 落竟随着我收 起的折叠伞 窜 入电 梯。我在门前甩干 孤 寂， 再次回到布满自由的卧房 里 。摘 下 耳 机 ，倾 听 内 心 ，我 反 刍 着 今 天 的 未 完 待 续 ，也 开始为明天的不 确定尝试 编 曲 。生 活 啊 ，其 实 就 是 不 断 地 睁 眼、工作 、生 活 、交 际 ， 又 再 次 睡 去 。日 复 一 日 的 我 们是不是都 在一阵 莫名其妙 里，反 复 追求着看不见的先 后

排 序 ？我在 想 ，生命更 迭 的 轮 回，是否 值得我们在意。 花洒的温 度 点缀 冷夜，让我在 低 迷 沉 郁 中 疗 愈 身 心 。洗 澡 后 我拨了通电话 给 母 亲，她 倾 诉 着对外 婆 难以 昭告世界的 想 念 。她 总说「 以 后 」要 带 外 婆出国去玩， 「 以 后 」要 带 她 回老家看看。在外 婆离世的顷 刻 ，所 有 的「 以 后 」都 化 作 余 波，搅动着妈妈的愧 歉 波 澜。 我在想，生命 错 过的遗 或憾， 是否 值得我们在意。

我们每一瞬都在失 去，但也每一瞬都在 拥有生命。切记，请允 许一切的发生，不论 快慢 顺逆地去享受 这一瞬带给我们的 生命刻痕。 对 贫 富 悬 殊 的 差 距 ，对 人 生 跑 道 的 怀 疑 ，对 人 事 分 合 的 无 奈 ，对 怅 然 若 失 的人 际 ，身 处 六 尘 五 蕴 ，我 难 以 做 到 真 正 的 不 在 意 。准 备 合 眼 ，我 在 寻 找 适 当 频 率 ，期 盼 有 人 为我 解 析 现 实，剖 析 梦 境 。感 受 风 和 梦 的 温 差 ，睡 意 逐 渐 来 袭 ，或 许 今 日 的 各 种 际 遇 是因 缘 交 给 我 的 命题 。 睡 前 的 我 打开手 机备忘 录， 敲下键 盘— —给前一瞬的迷 惘 ，这一 瞬 的 疑 惑 ，下 一 瞬 的 茫 然 ，一 个 每 一 瞬 的 答 案：我 们 幸 运 、安 稳 、自 在 地 生 活

从 佛 教 的 角 度 来 看 ，父 母 和 儿 女 因 缘 分 走 到 一 起 ，并 无 必 然 的 从 属 关 系 。父 母 不 能 要 求 子 女 绝 对 服 从 ，子 女 也 不 能 要 求 父 母 满 足自己 的 一 切 要 求 。双 方 都 是 具 有 独 立 人格 的 个 体 ，虽 然 有 亲 情、有 血 缘 ，但 也 应 彼 此 尊 重 。

厚 的 缘 分 。佛 教 在 看 待 父 母 和 子 女 的 关 系 时 ，是 以 彼 此 尊 重 为 前 提 ，以 珍 惜 缘 分 为 原 则 ，以 心 存 感 恩 为 重 点 。 佛 教 主张 人们要父 慈子孝， 父母要尽到 做 父母的责 任， 子女要尽到 做子女的孝敬。 佛 教 强 调 因 果 、业 缘 ，认 为 今 生 成 为 亲 子 关 系 ，根 本 原 因 是 前 生 的“ 业 缘 ”所 感 。 佛 教 教 人 为 善 ，无 论 前 生 是 何 缘 ，做 父 母 的 一 定 要 尽 到 做 父 母 的 责 任 ，教 导 子 女 成

佛 教 讲 究 因 果 报 应 ，善 有 善 报 ，恶 有 恶 报 。父 母 在 家 庭 生 活 中能 够 常 做 善 事 好 事， 子 女 一 定 会 有 样 学 样 ，向 好 的 方 向 发 展 。如 果 父 母 喜 欢 做 不 善之事，就 算 聪 明能 干、 富 贵 荣 华 ，将 来 子 女 必 然 会 受 影 响 。有 句 古 训：“ 但 存 方 寸 地 ，留 与 子 孙 耕 。”方 寸 地 指 的 是 良 心 ，就 是 说 为 人 必 须心 地善良，后代 方能 得 福。

将精妙的佛教智慧 融入现代家庭教育之 中，能够为广大为人 父母者提供耳目一新 的家教理念和切实可 行的操作技巧。

为 一 个对 社 会、家 庭 、自己 负 责 任 的 人 ，教 导 子 女 为 人 处 事 的 正 确 理 念 和 方 法 ；做 子 女 的 也要 知 道 报 答父 母 养 育 之 恩 ，报 国 家 、众 生 的 生 存 之 恩 ，做 一 个 有 责 任 心 、有 爱 心 、有 理 想 、有 抱 负 的 优 秀人才。

此 外 ，家 庭 教 育 切 忌 过 于 执 着 。执 着 ，即 对 某 一 事 物 坚 持 不 懈 ，不 能 超 脱 。家 庭 教 育 需 要 适 度 的 执 着 ，但 是 如 果 过 于 执 着 ，就 会 给 孩 子 的 成 长 带 来 障 碍 ，也 是 烦 恼 的 根 源 。现 在 很 多 父 母 生 怕 因 为自己 而 使 孩 子 失 去了 变 得 优 秀 的 机 会 ，将 什 么 事 情 都 看 得 很 重 。他 们 对 孩 子 要 求 过于 严 格 ，期 望 太 高 ，让 孩 子 参加各类特长班拔苗助长， 动 不 动 就 对 孩 子 发 火 ，搞 得 和 孩 子 关 系 紧 张 。这 造 成 孩 子 严 重 的 逆 反 心 理 ，既 破 坏 了 家 庭 的 和 谐 氛 围 ，还 阻 碍 了 孩 子 的 健 康 成 长 。殊 不 知 ，小 树 苗 长 成 参 天 大 树 是 需 要 过 程 的，要 顺 其自然 。

最 好 的 家 教 是 夫 妻 恩 爱 ，只 有 夫 妻 恩 爱 ，双 方 才 能 齐 心 投 入 更多 在 子女 的 教 育上 ， 才能 更 好地营 造良 好 的 家教 氛 围 ，言传 身 教 ，在 孩 子 面 前 树立起榜样形象。

佛 陀 在《 善 生 经 》中 规 定 父 母 当 以 五 事 养 育 子 女 ：一 是 教 育 好 子 女，不令 作 恶；二 是 教 授 子女正确 的处世 道 理； 三 是 关 心 爱 护 子 女 ；四 是 为 子 女 安 排 好 婚 姻 生 活 ；五 是

为子女提供正常的物质条 件，满 足 其 正 常 要求 。 印光大师 对于家 庭教 育也有 阐 述 ：“人 未 有 不 愿 生 好儿 女 者 。然 十 有 八 九 ，将 好 儿 女 教 坏，后 来 败 家 声，荡 祖 业 ， 作 一 慵 顽 之 类 ，或 成 匪 鄙 之 徒 。其 根 本 错 点 ，总 因 不 知 爱 子 之 道 ，从 小 任 性 惯 ，大 则 事 事 任 意 ，不 受 教 训 ，多 多 狎 昵 匪 类 ，为 社 会 害 。”可 见 ，如 果 父 母 对 子 女 过 于 溺 爱 和 娇 惯 ，最 终 将 会 危 害 子 女、家 庭 和 社 会 。 星 云 大 师 认 为 ，现 代 的 家 庭 教 育 ，最 要 紧 的 是 让 子 女 养 成 处 世 的 诚 信 、良 好 的 习 惯 、礼 貌 的 品 德 、坚 韧 的 性 格 、勤 劳 的 美 德 、正 常 的 生 活 。养 成 儿 童 正 常 的 生 活 ， 包括三餐起 居以 及情绪的 正 常 。生 活 正 常 有 益 于 身 心 健 康 ，对 于 将 来 立 身 处 世 更 是 关 系 重 大 。除 了 以 上 观 点 外 ，法 师 还 认 为 尤 其 要 维 护 儿 童 的 自 尊 心 ，不 可 经 常 肆 意 地 讽 刺 孩 子 、讥 嘲 孩 子 、 责 备 孩 子 、歧 视 孩 子 。父 母 应 该 信 任 孩 子、尊 重 孩 子，不 要和孩子形成对立。 在 教 育 孩 子 的 过 程 中 ，尽 量 让 孩 子从小 接 触 圣 贤 的 教 育 ，这 样 就 能 在 幼 小 的 心 灵 中播下一颗向上向善的种 子，这 对 孩 子 的 健 康 成 长 意 义重大。

不 相 瞒 ，卫 塞 节是 我 最 期 待 的 日 子之一 。信 众 到访寺院犹如慈心善缘的交 汇 ，聚 成 了一 颗 颗 耀 眼 的 愿 星 ，在 明 月 的 相 伴 下，普 照 着 光明山普觉禅寺和新加坡的 一 切 有 情。 看 着大 家怀着欣悦与恭敬 虔 诚 礼 佛 ，心 里 总 有 道 清 澈 的 溪 涧 在 潺 潺 流 动 。兴许，是 众 生 的 祈愿化作清 流 或 是 佛 陀 的 誓愿 沁入心 脾，总在 这 五 月 的月圆日，泛 起 慈 悲 涟 漪 ，清 凉我心。 近 来，寺院 里忙忙碌 碌 地筹备 着 卫 塞 节 。看 着 去 年 收 起 的 佛 旗 再 次 扬 起 ，我 不 禁 开 始 期待大 家 到寺院 浴 佛、传灯、 三 步 一 拜 的 盛 大 场 景 。看 着 刚下过 的雨，又悄悄地 回到 天 上 去。心 里 突 然 想 着，或 许 该 和 大 家 分 享 ，我 们 这 些 年 在 卫 塞 节 献 的 花 、燃 的 灯、顶 的 礼 ，究 竟 为 何意 义 。虽 是 老 生 常 谈 ，但 其 中 蕴 藏 的 意 义 ，是 我 最 想 送 您的卫 塞 礼 。 曦 光 里，不 绝于耳的千年回音 苏 醒 大 地 ，看 着 光 明 殿 里 献 满 的 鲜 花 水 果 ，我 的 心 也 逐 渐 清 净。我 深 知 ，这 万紫千 红 的 摆 放 不 是 点 缀 品 ，而 是 因 果 业 力 的 最 佳 提 醒 。是 佛 陀 的 留 芳，是 无 私 的 绚 丽，提 醒 着 众 生 多 多 关 照 自 心 。佛 案 前 供 奉 的 ，是 万 事 万 法 不 离 的 因果，只要 我 们以善为衷，

实 践 于 一 念 、一 言 、一 行，那 满 是 善 因 的 种 子，终 使 我 们 证得佛果。 艳 阳 下，我在 甘 露 戒 堂 前 对 着 菩 萨 真 诚 合 十，对 象 并 非 佛 像 本身。我 顶 礼 的，是 对 佛 陀 的 慈 悲 心 ，是 这 份 崇 尚 众 生 平等的精神和度化一切的愿， 让 我 在 小 小 的 掌 心 之 间 ，感 受 到了无 边 的 温 度与慈 爱。

即使佛像 距我们 千里，但只要怀着 同体大悲的感恩 之心，那佛陀自然会 感应并环 绕于你我眼 中的众生里。 霞 光 中 ，我 看 着 孩 童 勺 起 漂 着 花 瓣 的 净 水 ，慢 慢 的 倾 注 于 圣 像 身 上 ，我 的 心 也 感 到 尘 垢 在 剥 落，无 明 在 逃 离 。一 注 一 注 的 水 ，并 不 是 什 么 加 持 过 的 迷 信 愿 力 ，而 是 通 过 浴 佛 告 诫 众 生 ，以 智 慧 洗 涤 尘 浊 ，不 让 执 着 与 无 明 填 塞 内心 。 黑夜 里，盏 盏 灯烛 并 列成行， 余 音 绕 梁 的持咒与赞 佛声 将 夜 空 唤 醒 。传 灯 的 队 伍 ，不 是 为了取代 路 灯 的 通明，而是因 为 他 们 背 负了佛 陀 传 递 智 慧 之 光 的 使 命 。烛 光 不 因 分 享 而 泯 灭 ，光 明 不 因 黑 暗 而 停 息 。由 千 万 光 亮 凝 聚 的 生 生

不 息 ，正 是 佛 教 智 慧 延 续 的 足迹。 黎 明 前 ，三 步 一 拜 的 队 伍 罗 列整 齐，大 家 摊 开双手跪 地， 犹 如 千 万 莲 花 盛 放 清 净 。第 一 步，观 想佛陀发 慈 悲 愿心 。 第二步，净 化 心灵回归 平静。 第三步，破 除 我 执福 慧 双 具 。 仪 式 的 冗 长 也 阻 挡 不 了大 家 的 决 心 毅 力 ，大 家 都 带 着 信 念与希望 冲 破 黑暗 迎 接 心 的 光明 。 我们都明白国家并不活在 那 飘扬的旗帜或是经纬纵横的 地 图 里 。但 为 何 看 见 国 旗 或 听见 国 歌 还 是 一 样 会 肃 然 起 敬 ？只 因 我 们 的 爱 国 之 心 永 远 活 在 这一片生于斯，长 于斯 的 新 加 坡 土 地 。即 便 我 们 身 不 在 此 ，但 只 要 心 系 家 乡，这 片盛 放 胡 姬 花的土 地自然就 会 蕴 藏 在 我 们 的心 底 。 我们都明白佛陀并不活在砖 石 堆 砌 的 圣 像 里 。但 为 何 看 见佛像 还 是会双手合 十 恭敬 顶 礼 ？只 因 我 们 所 发 的 菩 提 心，忆念着 佛陀 的高 风 亮 节， 并 见 贤 思 齐 。即 使 佛 像 距 我 们 千 里 ，但 只 要 怀 着 同 体 大 悲 的 感 恩 之 心 ，那 佛 陀 自 然 会感应并环 绕于 你我眼中的 众 生 里。

于爱的定义因人而异， 根 据 释 尊 的 说 法 ，爱不 是 为了满足私欲 ，而依 恋 某 人 或 某 物 。爱 应 该 是 不 间 断 地 自我 牺牲，对万物充满 慈悲。 释 尊曾说： “ 让 人们 不 再 相 互 欺 骗 ，不 再 互相 轻 视 。在 愤 怒 或 意 志薄 弱 时，也不 会 相互伤 害。爱 就 如 母 亲 般；即 使 是冒 着 生 命 危 险 ，也 会 极 力 保 护 她 唯 一 的 孩 子。所 以 ，让 人们 培 养 无 止境 的爱心 。” 大 爱 犹如泥土，使 万物生长。 它可以极 大地丰富人类生命， 不给予丝毫的限制和牵绊。 爱 提 升了人性 。爱 无 需 花 费 分 毫，爱 应该 是没有选 择 性的。 或许 有些人会 认 为爱是一种 获 得，但它基 本上 是 一种 付出 的过程。 在培 养 爱心 和善意 时，可以 从 家 庭 中 做 起 。父 母 亲 之 间 的 情 感 ，影 响 家 庭气 氛 甚 巨 ，家 中 成 员 因 此 感 受 到 爱 、呵 护 和 分 享 。夫 妻 之 间 应 该 相 互 尊 敬、谦 恭 和忠诚 。 父 母 亲 对子女 有五项 责 任： 教 导 其 不 可 做 恶 事 ，树 立 好 榜 样 ，完 成 对 孩 子 的 抚 养 义 务，让 孩 子 接 受 教 育，引导 孩 子的 恋 爱 或 婚 姻 。 另 外 一方 面，为人子女 者应 关 照 父 母 ，并 善 尽 子 女 者 的 职 责。儿 女 应 该孝 顺 父 母，珍 惜 亲 情，保 护 家 庭 的 财 富，以 父

母之名行 善，在 父 母离世 后 也 以庄严的态度来追悼他们。 假 如父母 亲和子女遵 从佛陀 的劝告，家 庭中将会充满 快 乐 和 平 静 的 气 氛 。生 命 是 由 种 种 小 事 组 合 而 成 ，习 惯 性 的 微 笑、善意 和 尽 义 务，将 使 我 们 的心灵获 得 快 乐。

当内心有爱时， 四周将环 绕着光明。 当内心有爱时，每一 句话都含有欢乐的气 氛。当内心有爱时， 时光将轻缓、甜蜜 地流逝。 一 个 有 爱 的 人也 会 拥 有 慈 悲 心 ，我 们 应 该 养 成 习 惯 ，去 帮 助 身 陷 困 难 或 不 幸 的 人 。我 们不应该只是在情感上为他 人 感 到 悲 悯 ，应 该 将 这 种 情 感 化 为 实 际 行 动 。爱 心 和 善 意 扩 大 并 不 意 味 着 赠 予，而 是表现慷慨 和有礼的精神。 善意 是 一种盲人可见 到、聋 者 可听 到 的美 德 。在 这个世界， 有人需要你用言语去安慰他， 他会因你的出现而感到愉快 且 朝 气 蓬 勃 ，他 会 因 你 的 帮 助 而 脱 离 苦 海 。无 论 你 的 存 在 是 多 么不 明 显 或 不 重 要， 你 对 人 类 而 言 ，都 是 珍 贵 的 资 产。所 以 ，你 不 应 该 为此 而 感 到 沮 丧 。圣 雄 甘 地 曾 说 ： “你的善行多半是不显著的， 但 是，重 要的是，你做了。” 若发现 四 周有比你不幸 或 不

健 康的人，应该 尽一己之 力去 帮 助 他 们 。我 们 应 该 不 断 地 培 养 仁 慈心 、爱心 和 善意 。凡 是 世 上 的 人 ，皆 有 被 欺 骗 的 经 验 ，你 也 不 例 外。假 如 你 被 人 欺 骗 ，不 用 感 到 羞 愧 或 侮 辱 。但 是，假 如 你 欺 骗 他 人， 就 是 件 可 耻 的 事 。对 那 些 对 不起 你 的人，千万 不 要 存 有 报 复之心。 有 时，你 所在乎 的人似乎对你 漠 不关心，你会 因此 感到 心情 沉 重 。但 是，这 不 是 沮丧 的 好 藉口。既然你坚 信你对他人富 有慈悲心，别人的忘恩和不 在 乎无关 紧要。当内心 有爱时， 四 周 将 环 绕 着 光 明 。当 内 心 有爱时，每 一 句话 都含有 欢 乐 的 气 氛 。当内 心 有 爱 时，时 光 将 轻 缓、甜 蜜地流 逝 。 最 后，感 激 是种 少见的美 德。 为了我 们自己的 快 乐，不 必 期 望我 们 的行为要获 得 他人的 感 谢。假 如 心 存此 念 ，我 们 将 为 之 沮 丧 和 苦 恼 ，假 如 荣 誉 和 感 激 随 行 善 而 来 ，我 们 要 处 之 泰 然 。假 如 情 况 并 非 如 此，我 们 也无需 挂 碍。

轻 时，参 加 过 某个 青 年 团 体 ，这 个 团 体 每 两 年 都 有 举 办 一次 无 偿 献 血 活 动，大 家都踊 跃 参加 。 献 血 可 说 是 一 种 善 行 ，所 谓 “救人一命，胜造七级浮屠”， 每次献 血 后，心里总觉得很愉 快、很 踏 实 。其 实 献 血也是 一 种财 布 施 ，但不是 身 外之 财， 而是身内之财。

学佛修行是启发 智慧，行善是修集福 德资粮，只有两者相 辅而行，人生才是 完善、最圆满的。 我 之 所 以 实 践 献 血 的 善 行， 是 因 为 献 血 不 需 要 花 钱 ，也 能 尽 一 份 社 会 责 任 。多 次 献 血 更令人有一种成 就 感。 不 过 ，这 种 善 行 还 需 要 靠 大 众 多多 参 与和 推 广。我 认 为普

及 此 善 行 的 观 念 ，能 培 养 更 多 的 善 心 ，对 爱 心 社 会 的 推 广工作，更 具意 义。 我 身 边 的 一 些 朋 友 ，他 们 都 很 慷 慨 ，偶 有 机 缘 都 会 布 施 行 善，但有些 人的 内心是 为求 福 报 。我 相 信 在 婆 娑 世 间 的 众 生 ，或 许 大 多 数 都 有 这 种 思 维 。倘 若 他 们 能 花 一 些 时 间 来 学 习 佛 法 ，那 就 是 功 德 无 量了。 要知 道，学 佛修 行与行 善 是 应 该 连 在 一 起 进 行 的 。换 句 话 说 ，学 佛 与 行 善 是 相 辅 而 行

的，这 样 心 灵才 能 富 足 ，生 活 才会 幸 福 。 生 活 中 ，我 的 一 些 朋 友 对 学 佛 修 行 ，因 害 怕 戒 律 清 规 而 不 愿 意 面 对 ，只 想 在 行 善 中 求得福报。 我 则 认 为 ，佛 法 修 行 只 求 福 报 ，是 无 智 慧 的 修 持。我 们 学 佛 修 行 是 要 获 得 清 净 心 ，才 是功 德 。所 谓 清 净心，就 是 要 清 楚 并消 除 我 们 的 贪、嗔 、痴 的 心 。当然 ，要 清 除 此 三毒 并 不 容 易。在 循 序 渐 进 中，减 少 一 分 烦 恼 ，便 得 一 分功 德 ，由

活 在 世，不 如 意 十之 八 九 。为 什 么 我 们 会 如 此 不如 意、不 顺 心 呢 ？很多 时 候 是 因 为我 们自寻 烦 恼，不知 道什 么 是 苦、什 么 是 乐。 苦乐的 感 受 是由自己 决 定 的 。遇 到 同 一 种 状 况 ，在 不 同 情 形 下，个人 感 受 会 完 全 不 同 。这 和 当 下 的 身 体 状 况 、心 境 、时 间 或 环 境 都 有 关 系 。举 个 例 子，面 对 麻 辣 火 锅 ，爱 吃 辣 的 会 想 要 加 麻 加 辣 ，不 爱 吃 辣 的 是 不 是 觉 得 如 上 刑 灌 辣 椒 水一 样 痛 苦 呢 ？又 比 如 说 ，对 于 刘 姥 姥 而 言 ，她 能 在 大 观 园 参 观 游 览，吃 到 没有 茄子味 的 茄子， 是 无 比 幸 福 快 乐 的 。但 对 于 贾 母 来 说 ，能 吃 到 没 有 经 过 加工并带着土地气息的茄 子，才是 幸 福 的 体 验 。总 之 ， 苦 乐 的 感 受 是 由 自己 的 体 会 决 定 的 ，所 以 只 有 自 己 能 让 自己开心 起 来 。

当 然 ，很 多人 在 面 对 着 极 端 的 天 灾 人 祸 、饥 寒 交 迫 、生 活 贫 困 或 者 被 疾 病 困 扰 。这 些 烦 恼 是 很 恶 劣 的 ，且 急 需 立 刻 解 决 的 。我 非 常 同 情 在 这 些 苦 难 中 的 人 们 ，我 们 应 该 为 他 们 提 供 帮助 和 祈祷， 而 不 是 在 这 里 空 谈 ，毕 竟 行 动 远 胜于 说 教 。 所 以 ，以下 要谈 的 话 题 ，是 给 那 些 生 活 还 算 不 错 ，却 怎 么 也 开 心 不 起 来 的 人 们 ，希 望 大 家 有所思考。 人 们 都 喜 欢 美 好 的 东 西 ，比 如 钱 、房 子、车 子 等 等，只 要 是 自 己 喜 欢 的 东 西 ，越 多 越 好。如 果 拥 有 了一 间 屋 子，就 想 要 再 拥 有 一 间 更 大 的 ；如 果 有 一 辆 豪 车 ，就 想 着 多 来 几 台 ；如 果 孩 子 想 上 北 大 清 华 ，最 好 能 把 这 两 个 学 校 都 买 下，让 孩 子 随 便 选 。于 是 ， 欲 望 渐 渐 地 膨 胀 起 来 ，难 以

控 制 。美 好 事 物 的 诱 惑 力 太 大了，让 人 无 法 自 拔 ，连 拥 有 一切的皇帝都想要寻找不死 仙 丹，让 他 能 长 生 不 老，拥 有 的 东 西 再 不 会 失 去。 我 们 被 欲 望 折 磨 着 ，渴 望 拥 有 一 切 带 着 价 码 的 东 西 ，地 位、爱 情 、美 貌 等 等 。这 些 无 形 的 财 富 ，也 在 时 刻 刺 激 着 我 们 。无 底 洞 一 样 的 欲 望 ， 让 我 们 因 为“ 不 曾 拥 有 ”而 感 到 痛 苦 。而 当 我 们 在 拥 有 了以 上 某 种 心爱 的 事 物 时， 焦 虑不安 也一定伴 随 而来， 因 为害 怕 失 去。 偏 偏我们心爱的人会 过 世， 喜 欢 的 东 西 会 被 夺 走 ，在 意的青春美貌会随年华老 去. . . . . . 失 去和 分离 的 痛 苦，让 我们眼里和心里装满泪水。 也 许 你 不 相 信 ，我 们 的 泪 水 可以 汇 聚 成一片 汪 洋 大 海 。 当 我 们 失 去了曾 经 拥 有 的 东 西 以 后 ，大 多 数 情 况 下 会 开 始感 到 生气 ，因 为无能 为力， 没有办法 去满 足自己的 欲 望 ，甚 至 还 发 现 自 己 失 去 的 东 西 竟 由 别 人 所 拥 有 。所 以 看 什 么 都 不 顺 眼 ，就 是 想 发 脾 气 ，尤 其 是 对 那 些 比 我 们 幸 福 ，或 者 时 刻 提 醒 我 们 不 幸 福 的 人 发 脾 气 。嫉 妒 、愤 怒、伤 心 快 要 把自己 逼 疯了， 自己 对自己失 望 无 比 。 于 是 ，佛 说 了 四 圣 谛 ：苦 ， 集 ，灭 ，道 。

这个世 间 无常是常，只有 不 断 的 变 化 才 是 这个 世 界 最 真 实 的 情 况 。我 们 无 法 拥 有 恒 常 不 变 的 东 西 。一 切 的 美 好 或 者不美好都有过去的时候， 并且 正 如 我 前 面 所 提 到 的 ， 这 个 世 界 上 还 有 很 多人 遭 到 天 灾、战 乱 、疾 病 的 折磨。 虽 然 我 们 都没 经 历 过 死亡， 但 是 看 到 亲 人 离 去 的 样 子， 也 知 道 这个 过 程 是 痛 苦 的 。 这 些 苦 我 们 要 察 觉 、要 体 会 ，但 要 懂 得 如 何 不 要 积 聚 在心。 什 么 是 真 乐 呢 ？有 一 个 衡 量 的标 准。真正的快乐是 越多越 快乐，而且 无法被 抢 夺 走或毁 坏 掉 。是 吃饭吗？吃一 碗 饭 是 刚 好，挺 快 乐 。吃 两 碗 呢 ，还 行 吧 。吃 到 第三碗 ，还 会 快 乐 吗？可见 吃 饭 不是 真 乐 。因 为 不能一直吃，不停止。

我们本来就 无所得，所以也 无所失，随缘自在。 如是，快乐是一种 内心的强大、安宁 与坦然。 那 么 钱 呢 ？越 多 越 好 吗 ？不 见 得 。有 钱 人 怕 老 婆 只 是 爱 钱 ，对自己 不 是 真 爱 ，怕 孩 子 被 绑 票 ，怕 哪 天 没 有 守 法 纳 税 而 进 监 狱 。钱 的 缺 点 是 不 花 的 时 候 完 全 没 用 ，一 开 始

花 肯 定 就 能 花 完 。钱 ，该 花 就 花 ，存 钱 和 花 钱 不 能 算 是 真正的快乐。

会。发 生了 就 发 生 ，该 干 什 么 就 干 什 么 ，不计 较、不 挂 碍 。

那 么 什 么 才 是 真 乐 呢 ？智 慧 是 快 乐 的 本 源 ，而 开 明 心 地 才 能 拥 有 真 正 的 快 乐！

求 ，把 对 物 质 或 名 利 的 欲 望 降 下 来 ，才 能 使 内 心 平 静 。 尽 力 去 帮 助 别 人 ，不 以 利 益 自己 作 为 生 活 或 工作 的 出 发 点 ，懂 得了命 运 的 安 排 ，也 就 懂 得 乐 天 知 命 ，如 此 才 能 积 极地改变命运。

因 为 知 道 无 常 ，所 以 会 珍 惜 缘 分。人 必 定 会 老 、会 死 ，老 的 过 程 要 优 雅 ，死 的 时 候 要 有 尊 严。对 曾 经 拥 有 的 可 以 放 弃 ，对 不 曾 拥 有 的 也 不 渴

唯有智慧才能使我们不迷 惑 ，指 引 我 们 找 到 生 命 本 来 的 意 义！好 好 活 着，活 得自在 洒 脱 ，无 论 发 生什 么事，都 体 会 到 那 不过 是因果 与因 缘 际

愿 大 家 都 能 向 快 乐 出 发 ！平 安 喜乐！共 勉！

众

度众生是诸佛菩萨的 重 要 行愿 。诸 佛 菩 萨为 了 救 度 众 生 出 离 苦 海 ，常 以 无 缘 大 慈 、同 体 大 悲 之 心 ， 作 众 生 不 请 之 友 ，代 众 生 受 各 种 痛 苦 。诸 佛 菩 萨 作 众 生 不 请 之 友 ，是 为 了 增 进 与 众 生 的 情 感 ，方 便 度 化 。如 四 摄 法 中 的 同 事 摄 ，就 是 菩 萨 随 应 众 生 之 机 缘 而 示 现 ，和 光 同 尘 ，与 一 切 众 生 共 事，令 得 利 益 。由 此 因 缘 ，菩 萨 得 以 摄 受 众 生 ，众 生 亦 因 之 依 从 菩 萨 信 受 教 法 ，而 得 入 于 涅槃之境。 在 诸 多 佛 经 中 ，都 有 关 于 佛 菩 萨 为 救 度 众 生 ，作 众 生 不 请 之 友 的 论 述 。如《 胜 鬘 经 》云：“ 普 为 众 生 作 不 请 之 友 ，大 悲 安 慰 ，哀 悯 众 生 ，为 世 法 母 。”诸 佛 菩 萨 像 慈 母 一 样 哀 悯 众 生 ，安 慰 众 生 ， 常 为 众 生 作 不 请 之 友 。《 佛 说 普 贤 菩 萨 行 法 经 》云：“ 视 一 切 人 犹 如 佛 想 ，于 诸 众 生 如 父 母 想 。”我 们 应 当以平 等 心 将 一 切 人 都 当 作 佛 想 ，一 切 众 生 作 父 母 想 ，把 一 切 众 生 都当 成自己 的 亲 人 。 《 佛 说 无 量 寿 经 》云：“ 以 不 请 之 法 ，施 诸 黎 庶 。如 纯 孝 之子，爱 敬 父 母 ，于 诸 众 生 ， 视 若 自 己 。一 切 善 本 ，皆 度 彼 岸 。悉 获 诸 佛，无 量功 德 ，

智 慧 圣 明 ，不 可 思 议 。”修 行 之人应当像孝子爱敬 父母一 样 ，将 众 生 当 成自己 ，布 施 佛 法 给 众 生 ，令 众 生 都 能 得 到 解脱 。

生 ，毕 竟 大 乐 。”菩 萨 行 菩 萨 道 时，常 发 大 乘 菩 提 之 心 ，普 济 一 切 苦 恼 众 生 ，愿 代 众 生 受 无 量 诸 苦 ，令 众 生 得 到 究 竟 涅 槃 之 大 乐 。《 优 婆 塞 戒 经 》云 ：“ 见 他 受 苦 ，如 己 无 异 。”诸 佛 菩 萨 常 以“人 溺 己 溺 、人饥 己 饥”的 大 悲 情 怀， 见 到 众 生 受 苦 ，就 像 自 己 受 苦 一 样 难 过 。因 菩 萨 心 中 常 系 念 苦 海 众 生 ，当 见 到 众 生 受 苦 恼 时，就 会 感 同 身 受 ，欲 救 济 众 生 解 脱 痛 苦 。菩 萨 对 于世间一 切不知 道 感 恩的 众 生 ，不 会 产 生 怨 恨 之 心 ，也 不 会 生 起 一 念 求 回 报 的 心 ，而 是时时想着灭除 众 生 无量的 苦恼。 诸佛菩萨在度化众生过程 中，为了令 众 生 出 离 苦 海 ，常 作 众 生 的 不 请 之 友 ，以 众 生 之苦 为己苦，生 起 哀伤之 心 ， 愿 代 众 生 承 受 无 量 诸 苦 。这 种 精 神 体 现了诸 佛 菩 萨发 大 慈 心 救 度 众 生 的 悲 愿 ，以 及 观 一 切 众 生 与 己 身 同 体 ，而 生 起 拔 苦 与 乐 、平 等 绝 对 的 悲心。

实 在 在 指 出 了人 生 的 真 相 。 这样的观念与我们真实触 碰 及看到 的人 生其 实并不矛 盾。世 间 虽 是 虚 妄 的，却 也是 真 实 的 。好 像 一 部 播 放 的 电 影，情 节是 虚 拟 的 ，但 却 有各 种 演 员 真 正 的 演 出 ，台下 亦 有 观 众 在 观 赏 ，体 悟 着 整 部 戏 的 悲 欢 离 合 。人 生 这 部 大 电 影 里 ，演 员 也 在 演 ，观 众 也 在 看 ，却 总 因 为 个人 的 颠 倒 、妄 想 与执 着，将 电 影 里 的

那 具 意 就 不 重 要 吗 ？当 然 重 要 的 ，地 藏 菩 萨 因 为 想 要 超 度 母 亲 ，于 是 发 了 大 愿 成 就 自己 ; 我 们 娑 婆世界 的 本 师 释 迦 牟 尼 佛 ，更 是 救 度 了父 母 亲 与 兄 弟 。佛 菩 萨 将 世 间 的情 谊以 更 深 刻的方式去实 践 。我 们 在 节 日 里 会 吃 一 顿 饭 ，送 一 份 小 礼 物 ，这 些 具 意 的 举 动 ，其 实 只 是 当 下 的 快 乐 。修 行 人 则 能 够 通 过 修 行 ，希 望 亲 人 眷 属 生 生 世 世 得到安乐。

人生这部大电影里， 演员也在演，观众 也 在看，却总因为个人 的颠倒、妄想与执 着，将电影里的许多 事物具了意，导致自 己痛苦不堪。 所 以 ，真 正 具 意 的 人 生 并 不 是 一场 场 饭 局或一次次 温 情 的 相 聚 ，而 是 寻 求 解 脱 的 人 生 。佛 经 里 记 录 了 佛 陀 许 多 充 满 智 慧 的 话 语 ，都 在 一 一 教导 世人 如 何 获 得 有意 义的 人生。 在 历 史 的 长 河 里 ，如 果 用 宇 宙 的 时 间 观 来 看 ，我 们 人 类 所存 在的 时间是 短 暂 得可怜 的 。由 于 我 们 给 予 自 我 太 多 的 意 义 了，所 以 短 短 几 十 年 的 生 命 就 以 为 是 漫 长 的 ，人 与人 之 间 的 各 种 关 系 是 难 以 割 舍 的 ，一 切 努 力 经 营 得 来 的 身 外 之 物 是 珍 贵 的 。这 种 漫 长 与 珍 视 就 像 等 待 一 个人 的 时 候 ，一 分 钟 犹 如 一 个 小 时 。那 些 自 身 的 感 觉 终 究 是

自 己 给 人 事 物 下 的 定 义 ，相 对 起 宇 宙 时 间 而 言 ，我 们 宛 如尘埃一般。 所以世俗 的具意真正能 够留 下 些 什 么 ？古 代 的 许 多 孤 坟 如 今 已 经 无 人 祭 拜 ，不 知 道 是 谁 ，或 许 曾 经 修 葺 得 金 碧 辉 煌 ，后 人 们 每 一 年 都 前 去 悼 念 。再 后 来 经 过 了 战 乱 与 后 人 离 散 ，变 成 了 无 人 问 津 的 一 抔 黄 土 。曾 经 具 意 的 事 情 也 变 得 毫 无 意 义 了。孤 坟 里的魂或许 还在苦苦守 候， 得不到真正解脱。 于 是 ，在 接 触 佛 法 ，认识 佛 法 后 ，这 条 具 意 的 路 才 变 得 清 晰 和 明 了，那 就 是 走 在 真 实 的 解 脱 道 路 上 。而 解 脱 道 是 通 过 长 时 间 修 行 的 ，有 的 人 这 一 生 无 比 顺 遂 ，有 的 人 则 多 生 累 难 。无 论 因 缘 如 何 ， 至 少 现 在 ，是 不 能 蹉 跎 光 阴 的。明了人 生的 一 切是 泡 沫， 是 露 珠 ，虽 美，却 转 瞬 即 逝 。 以 随 缘 心 、随 喜 心 、自 在 的 心 才 具 备 真 正 的 意 义 ，就 世 俗 而 言 ，修 行 也 令人 能 够 更 好 地 处 理 家 庭 、亲 人 与 朋 友 的 关 系 。这 不 是 一 份 更 为 皆 大 欢 喜 的 礼 物 吗 ？它 更 是 一 席充满着法露甘味的筵 席。 以 此 来 庆 祝 每 一 个具 有 意 义 的日子，也 为这一 生 画 上一 个 具 意 的 句 号。

记 奥思 之维 死 院亡 巡 礼

晚

餐 后，人群 开 始 聚 集 在 惠 光 院 办 公 室 外，准 备 参加寺院主办的活动— — 夜 游 奥 之 院 。奥 之 院 位 于 高 野 山 ，日 本 和 歌 山 县 ，它 是日 本 佛 教 弘 法 大 师 ，空 海 大 师 的 陵 寝 ，日 本 人 心 目 中 神 圣 之 地 。由 惠 光 院 法 师 带 领 ，我 们 恭 敬 地 在 一之 桥 前 鞠 躬 ， 踏 上 桥 走 进 奥 之 院 圣 地 。沿 着 参 拜 道 路 ，我 们 经 过 许 多 墓 石 。这 里 是 日 本 最 大 的 墓 地 ，规 模 为 世 界 少 见 的 大 坟 园 ，有 超 过 2 0 万 墓 碑 。葬 于 此 处 的 有 历 代 高 僧 、战 国 时 代 诸 侯 、武 将、名 人、大 企 业 家 以 及 庶 民 。此 时 除 了 我 们 手提的小灯笼发出的 微 光， 周 围 一 片 黑 暗 。如 今 已 是 秋 季，气 温 接 近 摄 氏 零 度 。平 时 怕 冷 的 我 却 觉 得 还 好，丝 毫 无 阴 森 感 ，反 而 感 觉 格 外 谧 静 。我 想 ，已故 者 能 够 与 他 们 敬仰的空 海大师同处于此， 心 里 必定 得 到 安 慰 。 一 路 上 ，除 了介 绍 奥 之 院 的 特 别 景 点 ，带 领 法 师 也 为 我 们讲述空海大师以 及高野山 的 历 史 。空 海 大 师 在 日 本 宗 教 史 上 享 有 重 要 地 位 。大 师 于804年唐朝时期到中国 求 法 ，回 日 本 后 开 创 日 本 密 教 真 言 宗 ，教 学 足 迹 遍 布 日 本 。816 年，大 师 在 高 野 山 建 立了寺院 群，山上有 超 过10 0 间寺院 ，是真 言宗的 核心 。 从一之 桥 到 御 庙 约 2 公 里 。在 御 庙 桥 前 ，带 领 法 师 提 醒 我

们 以 恭 敬 心 参 拜 ，过 了 桥 不 允 许 拍 照 。日 本 佛 教 徒 相 信 空 海 大 师 在 12 0 0 年 前 并 没 有 圆 寂 ，至 今 仍 在 此 入 定 。 法 师 在 大 师 陵 前 诵 读《 心 经 》。参 拜 完 御 庙 已 将 近 深 夜 ，带 着 平 静 的 心 情，我 们 各 自回留 宿 的 寺 院 。 日游 奥 之 院 次 日 早 晨 ，我 独 自 来 到 奥 之 院 ，昨 夜 过于 暗，看不 到 的 景 色 就 留 给 白 天 。白 天 游 奥 之 院 是 另 一 番 体 验 ，虽 然 不 失 庄 严，但 感 觉 更 有生 气 ，从一 之 桥 入 口 处 开 始 ，便 可 见 参 拜 道 路 两 旁 茂 密 的 杉 树 。院 内 的 杉 树 多 达 1 3 0 0 棵 ，其 中 有 高 过 5 0 米 ，树 龄 6 0 0 年 的 老树 。 在 这 片 杉 林 中 ，聚 集 了 横 跨 几 百 年 的 墓 碑 ，较 古 老 的 已 长 满 青 苔 ，似 乎 不 再 有 后 人 扫 墓 。虽 然 不 同 年 代 的 墓 碑 设 计 各 异 ，但 普 遍 能 看 到 平 安 时 代（ 8 世 纪 末 至 12 世 纪 末）引进日本 坟墓 的五轮 塔。 在 密 教 中 ，五 轮 塔 是 法 界 的 象 征 ，由 五 块 不 同 形 状 的 石 头 叠 起 ，代 表 着 地 、水 、火、 风 、空 ，也 象 征 人 的 头 、面 、 胸 、腹 与足 。 漫 步 于 参 拜 道 ，时 不 时 会 遇 到前来朝圣的出家僧团以 及 身 穿 白 色 衣 裳 ，拿 着 木 杖 的 信 徒 。虔 诚 的 信 徒 跟 随 空 海 大 师 的 足 迹 ，于 遍 布 日 本 四 岛的88座 道场朝圣。 此 次到访奥之院可说是大开 眼 界 ，感 觉 日 本 人 似 乎 不 像 华 人 那 么 忌 讳 死 亡 ，这 或 许 是因这里是空海大师的陵寝 并 庇 护 的 地 方 ，是 日 本 佛 教 圣地。

念死无常 其 实 忌 讳 死 亡 是 华人民 间 思 想 ，而 非 佛 教信 仰 。佛 教 正视 死亡，最基 本的教诲四圣 谛中 的 第一 圣 谛 — — 苦，八苦之一 便 是 死 。在 佛 陀 时代 ，佛 陀 会 带领弟子在坟地修行静坐， 提 醒 修 学 者 无 常 、死 亡 以 及 减 少对 肉 身 的 欲 望；早 期 ，出 家人穿的袈裟 是 用裹 尸布重 染而成。由此可见 ，佛 教 对死 亡、坟 地 并 无 忌 讳 。虽 然 这 些 习俗今日已不 存 在，但佛 教 思 想 对于死亡的态 度不变。

苦是真谛， 死是苦， 但也是精进修学 的动力，提醒我们 了脱生死的必要。 印光大师在他的念佛堂内写 了一 个 很 大 的“ 死 ”字，下 面 有 一 行 小 字：“ 学 道 之 人 ，念 念不 忘 此 字，则 道 业自成 。” 从印光 大师 教导居士 们 的书 信 中 ，也 可 见 大 师 多 次 提 醒 居 士 们 ，保 持 随 时 将 死 的 心 态 ，以 摄 心 念 佛 。在《 印 光 大师文 钞复邓伯诚 居士书信 二 》中，大 师 勉 励 居 士 ：“ 不 能 专，要 他 专。不 能 念 ，要 他 念 。不 能 一 心 ，要 他 一 心 等。 念 佛 亦 无 奇 特 奥 妙 法 则 ，但 将 一 个 死 字 ，贴 到 额 头 上 ， 挂 到 眉 毛 上 。”另 外，在 回 复 某 宁 波 居 士 书 中 ，大 师 说 ： “ 今 幸 得 此 大 丈 夫 身 ，又 闻 最 难 闻 之 净 土 法 门 。敢 将 有 限 光 阴 ，为 声 色 货 利 消 耗 殆 尽 ，令其 仍 旧 虚 生 浪 死 ，仍 复 沉 沦 六 道 ，求 出 无 期 者 乎 ？ 直 须 将 一 个‘ 死 ’字（ 此 字 好 得 很 ），挂 到 额 颅 上 。凡 不 宜 贪 恋 之 境 现 前 ，则 知 此 吾 之

镬 汤 炉 炭 也 ，则 断 不 至 如 飞 蛾 赴 火 ，自取 烧 身矣 。凡 分 所 应 为 之 事 ，则 知 此 吾 之 出 苦 慈 航也，则断不至当仁固让， 见 义 不 为 矣 。如 是 则 尘 境 即 可 作 入 道 之 缘 ，岂 必 屏 绝 尘 缘 ，方 堪 修 道 乎？” 关 乎念佛 须 及 时，学 佛 亦是。 我们或许对诸如此类的说辞 不 陌 生 ：“ 等 我 退 休 后 再 念 佛 ”、“ 最 近 很 忙 ，以 后 再 参 加 这个 佛 学 班 ”。总 以 为自己 还 年 轻 ，时 间 还 很 多 ，忘 了 “ 黄 泉 路 上 无 老 少，孤 坟 多 是 少 年人”。 佛 陀 未 出 家 前 ，父 亲 净 饭 王 为了 避 免 悉 达 多 太 子 出 家 的 预 言 成 真 ，竭 尽 所 能 不 让 他 接 触 任 何 人 间 苦 ，王 宫 里 聚 集了所有 净 饭 王能 想向 的人 间 美 好，更 无 老 人、病 人 。若 人 间 真 无 苦，诸 乐 永 恒 ，悉 达 多 太 子 也 不 会 出 家 ，人 们 也 无 须 了 脱 生 死 。苦 是 真 谛 ， 死 是 苦 ，但 也 是 精 进 修 学 的 动 力 ，提 醒 我 们 了 脱 生 死 的 必 要 。难 怪 印 光 大 师 说 ：此 (‘ 死 ’）字 好 得 很 。

佛

教 主 张“ 不为自己 求 安 乐，但 愿 众 生 得离 苦 ” 的 慈 悲 济 世 思 想 。佛 教 的 “ 慈悲喜舍”思 想告 诉 我们， 作 为 学 佛 之 人 ，应 当 悲 悯 众 生 的 痛 苦 ，尽 自 己 的 能 力 救 度 众 生出离 苦 海 。 四 无 量 心 中 ，慈 是 第 一 位 。 慈是主动去关爱或怜悯他 人 ，使 他 们 活 得 快 乐 。佛 门 常 说 ：“ 无 缘 大 慈 ，同 体 大 悲 ”。慈 是 一 种至 高 无 上 发自 内 心 的 情 怀 ，与 世 间 的 爱 不 同 ，完 全 超 越 世 间 的 一 切 烦 恼 。具 有 慈 心 的 人 ，希 望 一 切 众 生 都 快 乐 ，还 要 脚 踏 实 地 去 帮助 他 们 。 悲 是 拔 苦 ，拔 除 一 切 众 生 的 痛 苦 。佛 经 上 常 说 苦 海 众 生 常被各种 痛苦烦恼所 缠 绕， 不 得自由 。因 此 ，诸 佛 菩 萨 常

常 发 大 慈 大 悲 之 心 ，希 望 救 拔 众 生 出 离 苦 海 。这 种 悲 心 不 仅 是 对 众 生 怜 悯 与 关 怀， 更 是以行 动 来救 拔 处 于痛 苦 中的众 生。 在 现 代 社 会 ，很 多 寺 院 通 过 多种 渠 道 筹 集 资 金 来 建 立 形 式 多 样 的 慈 善 机 构 ，比 如 建 立 慈 善 基 金 会，扶 贫 助 学，设 立 孤 儿 院 与 养 老 机 构 ，举 办 义学 等。 对人物 质 方 面 的 帮 助 是 慈 悲 济世的表现；遇 到老病之 人， 给 予关 照与呵护 也是 一种慈 悲 。当 别 人 的 情 绪 十 分 悲 观 时 ，若 能 给 予 温 暖 的 话 语 ， 使人从悲观的情绪中解脱出 来 ，重 新 生 起 生 活 的 信心 ，也 是 一 种 慈 悲 。凡 是 能 帮 助 人 们远离 或 减少痛苦的事业， 都 可 以 积 极 地 去 做 。通 过 这

在 长 相 、才 能 、学 识 等 方 面 胜 于 我 们 。对 于 这 些 胜 于 我 们 的 人 ，有 的 人 不 是 为 他 们 优 于自己而 高 兴 赞 叹；相 反 的， 他 们 对 人 存 有 妒 忌 之 心 ，甚 至 会 想 方 设 法 加 害 别 人 ，以 消 除 自 己 的 嫉 妒 。而 喜 无 量 心就是让我们因众生能 够离 苦 得 乐 ，顿 生 一 种 无 限 喜 悦 的 心 情 。佛 教 的 喜 是 冤 亲 平 等的欢喜，即 便 是 冤 家 对头， 如 果 有 欢 乐 的 事 ，也 同 样 表 示 赞 叹 欢 喜。

慈悲喜舍 不仅是诸佛菩萨 化导众生时具有的 四种心，也是一个 修行者应当具备的 基 本素养。 心怀 喜无 量心 的人，当看见别 人 做 善 事，会 随 喜 赞 叹 ；不 但 使 做善 事 的人心生 欢喜，自己 也 获 随 喜 功 德 的 利 益 。看 见 有人学习佛 法，要随 喜 恭 敬 。 学 佛 将 来 必 定 成 佛 ，可 以 脱 离 轮 回，免除 生老病 死 之苦， 这 是 人 生一 件 最 大 的 要 事， 最 应 该 赞 叹 随 喜 。我 们 看 到 任 何 人 得 到 快 乐 ，要 时 时 随 喜，保 持 一种 愉 悦 的心情。

样 的 行 为 ，不 仅 能 使 人 感 受 到学 佛人的慈悲和关 爱，而且 也会更 加 尊崇 佛 教 。 喜 ，即 欢 喜 、随 喜 、恭 敬 、赞 叹 ，就 是 随 喜 他 人 的 成 就 与 福 德 。随 喜 之 心 可 以 帮 助 我 们去除对他人的嫉妒与不 满 。在 我 们 周 围 常 有 很 多人

在 现 实 生 活 中 ，为 了 让 人 欢 喜 ，或 者 为 别 人 取 得 成 就 而 欢 喜 ，就 应 当 对 人 说 温 和 柔 软 、欢 喜 赞 叹 的 话 语 。谚 云 ：“ 好 言 一 句 三 冬 暖 ”。菩 萨 依 众 生 之根性，善言慰 喻， 使 其 充 满 信 心 与 欢 喜 ，藉 由 爱 语 与 众 生 结 善 缘 ，再 进 一 步 使 其 欢 喜 接 受 佛 法 ，信 受 奉行，成 就普度 众 生的目的。 作 为 修 行人 ，在与人相 处 时， 若能 让 众 生因为有你而心生

欢 喜 ，我 们 自 然 能 够 在 人 的 心 中 有良 好 的 形 象 。 舍是 平 等心，舍弃 我执我 慢， 等 视 自 他 的 平 等 心 ，及 舍 弃 财 物 等 的 布 施 心 ，舍 弃 自 心 过度的爱憎及烦恼的平等 心 。舍，是 没 有 执 着、没 有 厌 恶而平等地 对 待他人 及任 何 事 情 的 心 境 。平 等 的 态 度 是 其 特 相 ，可 以 帮 助 我 们 去 除 偏爱和执 着。我 们 对一 切人、 事 、物 不 起 憎 爱 执 着，做 了好 事 不 记 在 心 里 是 舍 ；做 了 不 如 法 的 事 ，忏 悔 以 后 不 再 放 在 心 里 是 舍 ；布 施 时 不 执 着 功 德 ，三 轮 体 空 是 舍 。把 慈 悲 喜 舍 的 功 德 通 通 舍 掉 ，不 执 着，才是 真舍。对 众 生 没 有 贪 嗔 痴 的 心 ，平 等 对 待，就 是 于 诸 众 生 ，心 住 平 等 舍。 舍 能 使 人 远 离 贪 心 。作 为 一 种乐善 好施 的 行 为，舍从表 面 看是自己的财物受到了损失， 但 是 你 却 不 仅 为自己 求 得了 功 德 ，而 且 还 会 受 到 受 施 者 的 尊 重 与 感 激 ，使 你 感 觉 到 心 灵 的 富 足 ，有 时 还 能 使 你 得到 意 想不 到 的美 好 回 报 。 慈悲喜舍不仅是诸佛菩萨化 导 众 生 时具有的 四 种 心，也是 一 个 修 行 者应 当具备 的 基 本 素 养 。如 果 我 们 都 具 有 这 四 种 心 ，不 仅 能 够 悲 悯 他 人 的 痛 苦与不 幸，也能 够为 他人取 得 的 荣 誉 而 欢 喜。同 时，我 们 还能 够尽己所能 解决别人的 困 难，让 人 过 得欢喜 幸 福 。

《 华 严 经 》提 到 ：“ 四 生 九 有 ，同 登 华 藏 玄 门 ；八 难 三 途 ，共 入 毗 卢 性 海 。”回 向 对 佛 教 徒 而 言 并 不 陌 生 ，何 以 见 得 ？佛 弟 子 平 日 无 论 是 读 经 、持 咒 、念 佛 、礼 忏 或 是 做 一 切 善 事 ，圆 满 功 德 时 ，都 要 发 愿 回 向 ，念 一 首“ 愿 以 此 功 德 ，普 及 与 一 切 ，我 等 与 众 生 ，皆 共 成 佛 道 ”等 偈 子，其 意 在 把 自 己 所 修 的 善 行和成佛的愿心汇集 起 来， 成 为 圆 满 有 力 、广 大 利 他 的 无量功 德。 回向的意义可说是扩充自己的 心理 观念，扩大 所 做的功德， 即 是以自己所 修之善 行，趣 向 于事理、因果、自他等三处。 第 一 、回 事 向 理 ：是 以 自己 所 修 的 善 事 ，向 于 法 界 真 如 的 实 际 。诸 法 的 事 相 是 千 差 万 别 ，生 灭 无 常 的 ，然 而 诸 法 的 理 性 却 是 真 如 实 际 ，不 生 不 灭 的 。这 是 因 为 众 生 的 无 明 妄 动 ，从 真 如 性 海 中 幻 起 业 惑 的 波 澜 ，枉 受 苦 海 的 沉 沦 ，尘 劳 缠 扰 。所 以 普 贤 十 大 愿 王中 教导 我 们 要 发 起 礼 敬诸 佛，以 至恒 顺 众 生各愿， 作 诸 功 德 ，就 是 为 了 让 我 们 息 妄 归 真 ，期 望 回 到 不 生 不 灭 的 实 际 理 地 ，所 以 叫 做 回 事向理。 佛 法 说 ：“ 三 界 唯 心 ，万 法 唯 识 。”只 要 心 识 一 扩 大 ，功 德 也 会 随 之 扩 大 。我 们 修 清 净 功 德 也 是 如 此 ，平 日 做 的 功 德 零 零 散 散 ，经 过 回 向 ，普 遍 一 味 ，同 成 圆 种 。同 时 真 如 的 理 性 ，是 普 遍 平 等 的，自 己 所 做 事 相 上 的 善 德 ，基 于 回向的意念而契合于理性，

其 功 德 自 然 也 扩 充 其 量 ，普 遍 广 大 起 来 ，遍 虚 空 界， 无 有 穷尽 。

向 。故 愿 以 此 功 德 ，令 一 切 众 生 皆 除 有 漏 之 业 因 ，同 超 菩提之觉果。

第 二 、回 因 向 果：即 以自所 修 的 善 行 ，趣 向 于 成 就 无 上 菩 提 。因 是 净 因 ，果 称 觉 果 。修 习 九 愿 是 净 因 ，回 向 菩 提 是 觉 果 。所 修 的 善 因 ，必 须 发 愿 集 中 回 向 ，才 能 汇 归 觉 海 的妙果。

第 三、回 自向 他：即 以 自 所 修 之善，趣 向 于 法 界 众 生 。自是 我 们 本 身，他 指 一 切 众 生 。把 自 己 平 生 所 修 的 善 行 ，所 做 的 功 德 ，不 据 为己 有，拿 出 来 和 大 众 分 享 为 善 的 喜 悦 ，所 以做善 事 时 就 要回自向 他 。 佛 门 中 有句 话 说： “未 成佛果 时，先 结 众 生 缘 ”，菩 萨 名 为 菩 提 萨 埵，意 为觉 有 情，故 当 菩 萨学佛 时必先发心度 人， 否 则 若 为自 利 ，只 能 自 度 ，不 能 度 人 ，这 便 失 去 佛 法 积 极 的 妙 用 ，不 能 完 成 佛 界 的 功 德 庄 严。

普为一切众生 求大福慧，普为一切 众生求大解脱，将自 己的功德回向他人， 使人人都能得到 佛法的利益，以佛法 得度生死。 我 们 学 佛 目 的 是 为了 成 佛 ， 成 佛 的 条 件 是 要“ 福 ”“ 慧 ” 具 足 。所 谓 福 慧 庄 严，福 报 有“ 有 为 福 ”和“ 无 为 福 ”之 分，慧 亦 有“ 有 漏 慧 ”和“ 无 漏 慧 ”之 别 。有 为 福 、有 漏 慧 ，都 是 人 天 福 报 ，未 曾 究 竟 ，福 力 一 衰 ，仍 要 退 堕 ，所 谓“ 天 上 五 衰 相 现 ，人 间 四 大皆 空 ”，不 是 永 久 实 在 的 。 因 修 有 为 福 、有 漏 慧 的 人 ，心 境 未 空 ，对 于 所 做 的 善 事 ， 心 里 还 是 有 所 求 ，故 所 得 的 福 慧 ，也 是 有 限 量 的 。以有 限 量 的 福 慧 ，自 然 难 致 成 佛 ， 殊 不 知 无 为 福 、无 漏 慧 ，才 是 彻 底 超 脱 生 死 轮 回 ，亲 近 诸 佛 国 土 的 资 本 。佛 是 圆 满 诸 善 功 德 、具 足 广 大 福 慧 的 圣 人 ，因 此 我 们 需 要 修 习 无 为 、无 漏 的 福 慧 ，才 能 成 就 佛 果 。因 此 回 向 ，不 但 为自己 个人 回 向 ，亦 为 一 切 众 生 回

这 是因为菩萨能于 佛理中如 实 观 察 ，如 理 思 惟 ，了知 诸 法 缘 起 性 空，以 空 为 性 ，广 大 无 碍 ，平 等 普 徧 ，心 无 所 住 ，把 自 己 所 修 的 功 德 ，不 为 自 己 求 得 人 天 福 果 的 安 乐 ，要 普 皆 回 向 ，为 一 切 众 生 求 无 量 福 慧 的 解 脱 自 在 ，即 造 成 自 己 成 佛 作 祖 的 伟 大 胜 因 。所 以学 佛人需 要 普为一 切 众 生 求 大 福 慧 ，普 为 一 切 众 生 求 大 解脱 ，必须将自己的 功 德， 回 向 他 人 ，使 人 人 都 能 够 得 到 佛 法 的 利 益 ，以 佛 法 得 度 生死。 学 佛 的人 必 须 要 有广 大 的 心 量 ，才 能 增 长 广 大 自 己 的 道 业 ，而 成 广 大 的 功 德 。因 此 回 向 的 心 理 概 念 ，在 修 学 佛 法 中，是 极被 重 视 的 。

/ 竹林夜话

选择希望 有 兄 弟 俩 一 起 外 出 经 商 ，在 半 途 遭 遇 了 恶 人 ，两 人 身 上 的 钱 财 被 洗 劫 一 空 。前 程 灰 暗 ，归 途 遥 遥 ，兄 弟 俩 人 绝 望 至极 。

修佛 一人 到 深 山 中 的 寺 庙 找 禅 师 求佛 问 道 。

有一 个好 心人 就 指点他 俩 到 大 佛 寺 去 ，找 智 禅 法 师 寻 求 帮 助 。两 人 来 到 大 佛 寺，跪 拜 在 智 禅 法 师 面 前 ，诉 说 了 遭 遇 恶 人 抢 劫之事 。

求 道者： “ 我 是 来 修 佛 的 。”

法师问： “你俩一定很绝望 吧 ！”他 俩 点 了点 头 。法 师 又 问： “ 被 抢 劫 去 的 钱 物 能 自行 回 来 吗? ”他 俩 摇了摇 头 。 法 师开导 说： “你们眼前只有 两 条 路 可 以 选 择 ，一 条 是 绝 望 ，另 一 条 是 希 望 。如 果 你 俩 选 择 前 者 ，那 么 恶 人 抢 夺 去 不 仅 仅 是 你 们 的 钱 物 ，还 有 精 神 ，那 样 失 去 的 代 价 就 更 大了；如 果 你们 选 择 后 者， 那 么 恶 人 抢 去 的只 是 一点 财 物，只 要 心 里存 有 希 望 ，一 切 都 可以 重 来 的 。” 之 后 ，法 师 知 道 俩 人 会 木 匠 手 艺 ，便 留 他 俩 在 寺 里 修 缮 那 些 陈 旧 的 木 龛 和 门 窗。 数 日 后 ，法 师 送 给 他 俩 回 家 的 路 费 ，俩 人 感 激 万 分 。法 师 却 静 然 说： “这 是 你俩应得 的 报 酬 ，不 是 吗 ? 只 要 选 择了 希 望 ，就一定 有 路 可走 。” 一 个人 无 论 遭 遇 什 么 样 的 不 幸 与 挫 折 ，脚 底 下 都 是 有 两 条 路 可 以 选 择 的 ：一 条 是 绝 望 ，一 条 是 希 望 。只 要 我 们 选 择 希 望 ，就 一 定 会 有 路 可 走。

禅师问： “你来这 里干什么 呢 ？”

禅师： “ 佛 没 坏 ，不 用 修 ，要 修 先 修自己 吧！” 无 论 是 修 佛 、拜 佛 、念 佛 或 学 佛 修 道 ，都 不 是 要 我 们 向 外 去求，而是 要 返 闻 闻自性， 向自己 的 内 心 去求去 修 。 一只 缺 角 的 杯 子 有 一 天 ，徒 弟 问 禅 师 ： “世上 真 有 完 人 吗? ” 禅 师 笑 而 不 答 ，随 后 从 身 旁 的 桌 上 端 起 一 只 茶 杯 ，递 给 弟 子，反 问 道 ： “你 看 这 只杯 子与其 它 的 有何 不 同 ? ” 弟 子 仔 细 端 详 了一 阵 儿 ，答 道： “ 这 只杯 子 缺了一角。” 禅师解释道： “ 其 实 ，除 了 那 微 末 的 一 角 之 外 ，整 个 杯 口 不 都 是 圆 的 吗 ? 每 个人 都 有 缺 点 ，若 不 去 计 较 缺 点 ， 那 么 这 个人 就 是 很 好 的 人 了……” 人非 圣 贤，孰 能 无 过 呢 ?正 如 禅 师 所 释 ，每 个人不 都 是 一只 缺 角 的 杯 子 吗 ? 与人相 处 ，重 要得是 懂得如何用欣赏的眼 光去 接受 别人的 优点，而 不是 一味 地去揭发别人的短 处。 只 有 这 样 ，我 们 才 会 从 别 人 的 眼 睛里 赢 来 更 大 的 尊 重 。 善缘

我 ，大 家 似 乎 都 非 常 熟 悉 。我 们 每 个人 都 是 生 活 在 强 烈 的 自 我 意 识 中 ，一 生 都 在 为 所 谓 的“ 我 ”而 奔 忙 。为 了 我 的 事 业 、我 的 家 庭 、我 的 儿 女 、我 的 名 誉 地 位 、我 的 财 富 … … 我 们 所 关 注 的 一 切 ，都 是 围 绕 着 自 我 这 个 中 心 。在 我 们 每 个人 的 心 中 ：“ 我 ”，有 着 神 圣 的 地 位 ，有 着至 高 无 上 的 权 力。 我 执 ，使 人 与 人 之 间 产 生 严 重 的 隔 阂 ；我 执 ，是 造 成 人 类 不 平 等 的 根 源；我 执 ，又引 发 人 生 的 种 种 烦 恼 ；我 执 ， 还 是 社 会 犯 罪 的 祸 根 。我 们 每天何止百次千次说到“我”。 然 而 ，究 竟 什 么 是 真 正 的 “ 我 ”呢 ? 在 生 活 中，我 们 有 身 外之 物 ，有身 内 之 物 。身 外 之 物 ，包 括 我 们 的 事 业 、名 誉、地 位 ，包 括 我 们 的 房 子、 汽 车，还包 括 我 们 的 妻 子、儿 女 、朋 友 ，以 及 诸 如 此 类 的 一 切 。我 们 时 常 将 它 们 作 为 生活的尺 度和成 功的标 准， 将 它 们 和“ 我 ”混 淆在一 起 ， 不分 彼 此 。 在生活中我们可以 发现这样 的 例 子：若 事业 成 功，似乎 就 高 人一 等，而 职 业 低 贱 ，又 会 自惭 形 秽；若 家 资 巨 万，便 觉 得 趾 高气 扬 ，而 身 无 分文 ，又 会 无 脸 见 人… … 事 实 上 ，这 些 东 西 只 是 暂 时 地 为“ 我 ”

自 回 我 归 的

所 拥 有 ，都 逃 脱 不 了 无 常 的 规 律 。我 们 的 名 誉 地 位 ，无 法 永 远 保 有；我 们 的 房 子、汽 车 ，随 时 都 会 更 换 主 人 ；即 便 是 我 们 的 妻 子 儿 女 ，也 可 能 在 聚散 离合中变 换 相互的 关 系 。由 此可知 ，这 些 身 外之 物 并 不 能 代 表 真 正 的“ 我 ”， 我 们 只 是 出 于 执 著 ，才 将 它 们当 成 是“ 我 ”的 一 部 分。

那 么 ，我 们 的 身 内 之物，我 们 的生命体总该 是我 的 吧 ?通 常 ，每 个人 最 关 心 的 就 是 自 己 。我 们 为 他 人 付 出 一 些 劳 动 ，就 会 计 较 报 酬 、计 较 得 失 。可 我 们 一 生 几 十 年 的 光 阴，都 在 为自己的 色身服 务， 忙他 的 衣 食、忙他 的 成长 ，却 无 怨 无 悔 。这 样 看 来 ，色 身 似乎理 所当然地 代 表 着真 正

的“ 我 ”了。可 我 们 再 分 析 一 下，就 会 发 现 ，我 们 的 色 身 也 不 过 是 四 大 的 假 合 。现 在 医 学 发 达 ，人 体 的 每 个 器 官 都可以像机 器 零件一样随时 更 换 。 而 且 ，我 们 的 色身 每 天都处在不断的新陈代谢之 中，从 婴 儿 到 少 年 、成 年 ，时 时 刻 刻 都 在 成 长 ，然 后 开 始 逐 渐 地 衰 老、败 坏，又有 哪 一

刻 不 在 变 化 中 ？色 身 就 像 住 房，只供 我 们 暂 时 住 一 住 ，我 们 无 法 永 远 拥 有 它 ，更 无 法 让 它 永 不 败 坏 。生 命 只 在 呼 吸 间 ，可 见 色 身 也 不 能 代 表 真 正 的“ 我 ”。 再 来 看 一下 我 们 的 精 神 活 动 。我 们 的 精 神 领 域 是 一 个 错 综 复 杂 的 世 界 。在 我 们

色 身 成 长 的 岁 月 里 ，我 们 的 精神领域也在不断 地得到充 实 。就 我 自 己 的 人 生 经 验 来 说 ，我 的 观 念 、我 的 知 识 ，离 不 开 小 时 候 父 母 的 教 育 ，上 学 后 老 师 的 教 育 ，以 及 走 上 弘法道路后社会所给予的影 响 。我 现在 所 想 的、所 说 的， 都 是 长 期以 来 一点一滴 慢 慢 形 成 的 。尽 管 ，我 们 每 天 都 会 不 断 地 表 述： “ 我 的 想 法！ 我 的 看 法 ！”不 时 地 发 表 一 些 高 论 。但 在 我 们 人 生 的 每 个 阶 段 ，观 念 并 不 是 一 成 不 变 的，而是随 着阅 历的丰富， 随 着 知 识 的 增 长 ，不 断 地 发 生 改 变 。尽 管 ，我 们 每 天 都 会 不 断 地 强 调 ：我 喜 欢 ，我 讨 厌；我 快 乐 ，我 痛 苦 …… 我 喜 欢 的 时 候 ，对 方 的 缺 点 也 是 优 点 ；我 讨 厌 的 时 候 ，对 方 的 优 点 也 成 了 缺 点 。我 快 乐 的 时 候 ，浑 身 的 每 个 细 胞 都 在 欢 喜 踊 跃 ；我 痛 苦 的 时 候 ，日 月 星 辰 也 显 得 暗 淡 无 光 。痛 苦 时 的 我 ，无 法 想 象 快 乐 时 的 我 ；快 乐 时 的 我 ， 同样无法想象痛苦时的我。 那 么，究 竟 是 痛 苦 时 的“ 我 ” 代 表 着 真 正 的“ 我 ”，还 是 快 乐 时 的“ 我 ”代 表 着 真 正 的 “ 我 ”呢 ? “ 我 ”究 竟 是 什 么? 从 以 上 的 分 析 中，我 们 可 以了解 到 ，所 谓 的“ 我 ”其 实 是 由 许 多 非 我 的 东 西 组 成 。而 这 些 非 我 的 东 西 ，哪 一 样 都 不 能 代 表 着 真 正 的“ 我 ”。如 果 我 们 把 它 们 当 成“ 我 ”的 话 ，人 生 就 会充满烦恼。

我们要以 缘 起 的智慧 来 观照 人 生 ，要 充 分 地 认 识 到 世 间 的 一 切 都 是 无 常 变 幻 的 。无 论 是 财 富 、家 庭 、事 业 ，还 是 我 们 的 生 命 ，我 们 都 不 能 永 远 拥 有 ，更 不 能 将 它 们 当 作 是 真 正 的“ 我 ”。如 果 我 们 可 以 认 识 到 这 一 点 ，就 能 够 减 少 对 世 间 万 物 的 执 著 ，让 我 们 的 心 从物 欲 中 解 脱 出 来 ， 从 自 我 中 解 脱 出 来 ，再 也 不 为 它 们 所 左 右 ，从 而 保 有 心 态的超 然，保 有人格 的 独 立。

如果我们能够 通达无我的真理， 就能更正确地认识自 己生命，不再盲目地 执著身内或身外 之物的“我” 我们也要以 缘 起 的智慧 来 观 照 心 念 ，我 们 的 思 维 中 有 种 种 不 同 的 想 法 和 情 绪 。有 人 说 世 道 险 恶 ，但 我 觉 得 人 心 更 险 恶 。当 我 说 到 人 心 的 时 候 ，大 家 想 到 的 可 能 只 是 他 人 的 心 ，但 我 指 的 却 是 我 们 每 个人 自 己 的 心 。在 我 们 每 个人 的 心 中 ，都 有 无 数 的 陷 阱 ：贪 婪 的 陷 阱 、嗔 恚 的 陷 阱 、自 私 的 陷 阱 、怀 疑 的 陷 阱 、骄 傲 的 陷 阱 、嫉 妒 的 陷 阱 、欲 望 的 陷 阱 、愚 痴 的 陷 阱 以 及不 良 嗜 好 的 陷 阱 等 。 如 果 没 有 智 慧 的 观 照 ，我 们 的心就会时常掉入这些陷阱 中 ，让 贪 婪 、嗔 恚 、猜 疑 、骄 傲 、嫉 妒 和 欲 望 支 配 着 我 们

的 生 命 。如 果 没 有 智 慧 的 观 照 ，我 们 的 心 就 会 时 常 沉 迷 在 这 些 陷 阱 中 而 不 自 知 ，把 眼前 的 一点 私 利当作 生 活 的 全 部 ，被 当 下 的 一 点 情 绪 主 宰 我 们 的 心 灵 。如 果 没 有 智 慧 的 观 照 ，我 们 就 会 缺 乏 辨 别 真 相 的 能 力 ，就 不 能 透 过 现 象 看 到 事 物 的 本 质 ，把 这 些 原 本 非 我 的 东 西 ，当 成 是 我 ，造 成 无 尽 的 人 生 的 烦 恼 和 痛 苦。 如果我们能够通达无我的真 理 ，就 能 更 正 确 地 认 识 自 己 的 生 命 ，不 再 盲 目 地 执 著 身 内 或 身 外之 物 的“ 我 ”，不 再 被世间的无常变化所困扰。 就 能 够 更 好 地 把 握 自己 的 心 念 ，对 每 种 想 法 的 产 生 ，都 能 清 清 楚 楚 ；对 每 种 情 绪 的 出 现 ，都 能 明 明 白白，就 不 会 心 甘 情愿 地 做 它 们 的 奴 隶 。 如果我们能够通达无我的真 理 ，才 有 可 能 开 发 出 我 们 本 自 具 足 的 智 慧 ，寻 找 到 我 们 本自具 足 的 佛 性 。 自 我 的 回 归 ，就 是 让 我 们 回 归 到 生 命 的 本来 !

e do not usually say that the Buddha has “died.” Instead, we say that he entered parinibbāna, which means the “complete extinction” or final nibbāna following the bodily death of an enlightened being. The Buddha’s parinibbāna might seem very distant to us because it is something that happened about 2,500 years ago. And yet the Buddha made the path to enlightenment highly accessible to us in a timeless way by virtue of his having grounded it in the lives of ordinary people. My own life, for example, has been totally transformed by the Buddha’s teachings. I met my first bhikkhu, Venerable Bodhesako, in India in 1971 and was basically “blown away”. I was utterly inspired by both him and the Buddha’s teachings, so I decided to take up the training of a bhikkhu.

Whether as a monastic or a layperson, one of the things we are trying to do in Buddhist practice is to bring forth wholesome states of mind. And gratitude is one of them.

Having lived as a Buddhist monk for many years, I feel deeply grateful not only for the teachings, but also for the lifestyle I have had as a bhikkhu. What about you? How have the teachings of the Buddha affected your life? Ask yourself that question. It is an excellent way to evoke

Gratitude is a foundation for enlightenment, we try to make gratitude into something we can cultivate — and not just when things are going well for us. gratitude. You can also contemplate on the life of the Buddha to bring forth gratitude. This type of sati (mindfulness) is called Buddhānussati, or the recollection of the Buddha.

Whenever we recollect some achievement that is extraordinarily courageous and noble, it elevates us because we see the possibility of doing something very grand and profound with this human existence. As we look at a Buddha image or a stupa, or as we contemplate the Dhamma, we realise that we would not be on this path had it not been for this remarkable being who taught so many centuries ago.

Since gratitude is the foundation for enlightenment, we try to make gratitude into something we can cultivate — and not just when things are going well for us. For instance, when someone is nice and kind to us, we feel grateful to them: that is the gratitude of circumstance. Now there is nothing wrong

with feeling grateful in favourable circumstances.

But we can certainly make our gratitude more robust by practising the bringing forth of gratitude regardless of the situation.

This is what we call bhāvanā (development of mind). We are now cultivating a skilful state of mind — in this case, one of thankfulness.

Another good way to develop gratitude is to create a personal shrine.

On my shrine, I have two Buddha images, pictures of my teachers, and other objects of interest.

A Buddha image points to both the historical Buddha, as well as our own possibility for enlightenment. When I look at the various items

on my shrine, I experience a sense of gratitude — gratitude to my teachers and parents, gratitude to all those who have made mendicant life possible for me, and gratitude for a way of looking at the world given to me by the Buddha. This attitude of thankfulness is a very beautiful state of mind.

The enlightened mind is

not greedy, impatient, or complaining; the enlightened mind is grateful. Of course, we are not always thankful for life’s difficulties. However, we can still cultivate gratitude in so many different ways.

For example, we can develop a deep sense of gratitude for the exemplary

Generosity is one of the virtuous qualities that leads to enlightenment.

If you think about the life of the Buddha — his renunciation, his many years of selfless teaching, and his enlightenment — you can see the depth of his generosity. For fortyfive years, he walked up and down the Ganges Valley offering teachings, admonishments, and reflections to countless monks and many thousands of laypeople in a spirit of tireless generosity. He even had to deal with a lot of recalcitrant monks along the way. qualities of the Buddha, for his teachings, and for this lineage. Moreover, we can evoke a feeling of appreciation for our teachers. When you meet a great teacher like Ajahn Chah or Ajahn Sumedho, you are touched by them.

You are so grateful to be in their presence, and you think, “Thank you.” And when you ask them about a difficulty you are having, they will say, “Don’t make it into a problem. Let it go.” This does not sound like a major teaching since it seems so simple; but it is very hard to do and it is ultimately the challenge of our lives.

We can also express gratitude for the fact that we have been born as humans at a time when the Buddha’s teachings are still available to us. And most of us live in societies that are not beset by war,

Enlightenment is actually the end of the ego, it is the opening of the heart of compassion, the heart of generosity, and the heart of gratitude. starvation, or disease, so we have tremendous opportunities for personal reflection. These are all the things for which we can be immensely thankful for.

So how do we use this valuable human birth skilfully and avoid frittering it away in trivial pursuits?

We do this by practising the Buddha’s teachings and by developing wholesome states of mind such as generosity.

People sometimes think, “Oh, you Buddhists are so selfish. All you want is enlightenment,” as if enlightenment is some kind of corrupting, selfseeking, narcissistic endeavour. Well, it is not.

Enlightenment is actually the end of the ego. It is the opening of the heart of compassion, the heart of generosity, and the heart of gratitude. My first teacher — the monk whom I met in India — used to describe the Buddhist desire for enlightenment as “the selfishness that puts an end to selfishness”.

The aspiration to awaken is not self-seeking in the sense that you care nothing for the welfare of others. Rather, it is selfinvestigating in the sense that you are investigating your own suffering for your benefit and for the

benefit of all beings. You are exploring the conflicts and fears and arguments you have with life — in other words, that whole business of being a human being. When you come to understand quite clearly that the suffering of the mind is caused by various mental habits that need not be followed, then greed, hatred and delusion begin to fall away. As they fall away through the practices of nonattachment and patient awareness, the heart begins to relate to others quite spontaneously with goodwill and compassion.

The selfless nature of the desire for enlightenment is beautifully expressed in the life of the Buddha.

If we recall, the Buddha left home to find the answer to a very personal existential question. He wanted to know: “If I and all those around me are subject to death, is there the Deathless? Is there an element in consciousness that is not subject to birth and death?” He pursued the answer to that question for six years until he attained enlightenment.

But his enlightenment was not simply a personal possession — that would not make sense. While he did experience the peace of awakening in a personal way, he also expressed this awakening in all of his actions, including in the ways he taught and generally related to people, in his giving nature, and

in his establishment of the Sangha of monks and nuns.

The aspiration to go beyond suffering means taking personal responsibility for our suffering. It is easy to blame our stress or unease on something or someone else or to distract ourselves away from it.

But if we always avoid assuming responsibility for our suffering, we will never be free of it. We really have to take charge and figure out why we are distressed. The Buddha’s teachings have a universal appeal because they address the suffering that is common to all of humanity: the fears, the disappointments, the doubts, the ageing of the body, etc. The Buddha points to these very mundane discomforts and asks, “Why do we suffer?” The response is that we suffer because of attachment. Attachment means identifying with the movement of life and not realising that there is a deep stillness behind that movement — a stillness of awareness, of knowing. So if we are moved by fears or desires, or prejudices and biases, then the task is to find out which is unmoving.

When we are aware of the flow of life, and when we have the courage to watch this flow rather than react to it, we begin to discover the beautiful quietude of the mind. Where that quietness takes you is ineffable — you cannot

describe it. You are just there with the stillness of the mind.

Another question to ponder is: “How well am I undertaking the path that the Buddha set out for us?” It is an extremely rewarding path, but it is very hard work. Ajahn Chah would always say, “Training your dog is easy; but training your mind is very difficult.” Yet what could be more interesting or more important than understanding what motivates you to say and do the things you do?

And what could be more essential than finding that place within ourselves where we can choose peace over suffering?

We can create the causes of peace even if we do not feel peaceful. You discover this in meditation.

If you are a beginner in meditation and you sit for ten minutes, you will probably start to feel restless. Then if the teacher says, “Just hang in there for another twenty minutes,” you might think, “But I’ve had enough; I want to get out.” But if you do hang in there, you will discover that you can choose to connect with peace even when the mind is agitated. You do this by choosing to witness, to be aware of, whatever experience is arising in the present moment — even if it is an unpleasant one. It is this choice that lays the foundation for

our meditation practice.

Once we have finished meditating, we realise that we feel more peaceful because even though the meditation itself may have been difficult, we made a choice for peace. Ajahn Chah used to say, “People want to be peaceful, but they make the choice for suffering.” For instance, if we feel annoyed at someone and we yell at them, then that is choosing to suffer.

How can we be peaceful if we choose suffering?

When you see the Dhamma, you see the Buddha.

When you see the Buddha, you see the Dhamma.

Of course, at times we all experience impulses that lead to stress and conflict.

Although it is difficult to curtail these impulses through force of will, we can still be aware of them, which can help us not to react to them. Restlessness is a good example of an impulse that can precipitate suffering. When we are feeling restless for whatever reason, we often find ourselves wanting to escape from the present moment. This can create even more suffering for us since it is not possible to run away every time we face an unpleasant situation. Because this becomes clear when we meditate, we learn to simply observe restlessness rather than act on it. This

same principle of skilful witnessing applies to other feelings and emotions as well. If we just bear witness to our wanting to follow some mood or emotion, we will eventually see that mood or emotion pass away. In this way, we are making a claim for peace.

Peace will become part of our consciousness because we are no longer a victim of our moods and emotions.

Seeing Buddha images and other symbols of the Buddha’s life and enlightenment can help remind us that mindful witnessing is meant to be an ongoing practice. When we enter a Buddha hall, for example, we always bow to the shrine. We can use that Buddha image to remind us of our aspiration to go beyond suffering, which can easily be forgotten in the course of our day.

As meditators, we can sometimes be very hard on ourselves when we see that we are still caught up in painful emotions. One way to remember that we are essentially good people doing good work with our practice is to reflect on the life of the Buddha. This reminds us that we are also honourable people aspiring to bring greater peace into the world. I personally enjoy reading about the Buddha’s life. I will read different accounts of it or even the same account again and again.

I never get tired of it: it is such a great story! There is a

famous actress living next to one of our monasteries. Her husband won an Oscar for his work on the film “Doctor Zhivago”. At one time he was working on a screenplay on the life of the Buddha.

When Ajahn Sumedho asked this man’s wife how the screenplay was going, she replied, “Oh, it’s a really difficult story. He’s a good guy who got better.”

One statement that often pops up in Buddhist teachings is “When you see the Dhamma, you see the Buddha. When you see the Buddha, you see the Dhamma”. When you see the Dhamma, you understand the way things are without the distortions of ignorance. Thus, you are awake to the truth of the way things are. This is Buddha — or awakened consciousness. So when we realise the Dhamma by being awake, by being present, that is seeing the Buddha. What is the sign that we are not awakened to the truth of what-is?

Suffering! Once we have suffered enough, we might one day realise: “This really hurts. I’ve had enough of this.” That is the first step towards peace, towards enlightenment.

Awakening to the truth of things takes some practice.

If we look at the people who come to meditate at the monastery or on retreats, they are typically nice people. But because they are conscientious people, they can sometimes be

There is no better gift we can give to ourselves, our workmates, our family, our friends, or the world at large than to operate from an enlightened mind, a mind of clarity. self-judgmental. They might find themselves harbouring some negative emotion towards someone in their family and think, “I shouldn’t feel this way.” However, that is not awakening to the truth — that is just perpetuating a sense of ego. Awakening to the truth means recollecting: “Right now, it feels like this.” That

is a constant refrain that comes up in Buddhism, and one which we need to practise coming back to over and over again.

Socially, we do our best to live responsibly and in harmony with others. But inwardly, there is always very important work to do, and because it is hard work, we need to keep

encouraging ourselves to carry on with the practice. We also need to continue to bring to mind that which is wholesome and uplifting. There is no better gift we can give to ourselves, our workmates, our family, our friends, or the world at large than to operate from an enlightened mind, a mind of clarity.

uddhism's moral teachings are centred around three crucial doctrines: dependent origination, karma, and the Four Noble Truths. When contemplating morality, it is essential to investigate dependent origination, which recognises the intricate interdependence of various causal relationships and human conventions. Thus, Nāgārjuna's treatise, "Fundamental Verses on the Middle Way", claims that to comprehend dependent origination is to understand the Four Noble Truths and to deploy them to delve into Buddhist ethics. While dependent origination and karma serve as the theoretical foundation for moral teachings, the Noble Eightfold Path in the fourth Noble Truth offers the practical method of incorporating right mindfulness and right concentration to enhance one’s ethics and morality. Accordingly, in the Sammaditthi Sutta, the Buddha states that a noble disciple has attained the Dharma when he fully understands both the wholesome and unwholesome and their respective roots, and relinquishes the three unwholesome ones — greed, hatred and delusion.

One who realises dependent origination sees the Dharma; one who sees the Dharma realises dependent origination.

In Buddhism, an individual's ethical and moral standards are set by his steadfast dedication to abide by the five precepts, which forbid killing, stealing, engaging in sexual misconduct, lying, and using intoxicants.

According to the doctrine of karma, we experience the consequences of our actions. This raises the first question, “Are all our experiences solely due to karma?” The Buddha expounds that one's feelings or conditions may stem from eight factors, including disorders related to bile, phlegm, and wind, their amalgamation, weather changes, selfneglect, harsh treatment, and karma. The clarity emerges when Reverend Nāgasena clarifies to King Milinda that the Buddha's illness, following Cuṇḍa’s meal offering, is ascribed to his prior physical frailty, not karma.

The Cuṇda Sutta vividly underscores the theme of selfneglect and enduring harsh treatment, exemplified by the Buddha's unwavering resolve to journey to Kusinārā despite being afflicted by severe bloody dysentery.

Nevertheless, the Buddha asserts that Cuṇḍa's meal offering is among the most meritorious acts, devoid of any demerit or responsibility for his ailment or eventual passing.

as a transcendent manifestation of the "cycle of cessation": Virtuous conduct → Nonremorse → Joy → Delight → Tranquillity → Happiness → Concentration → Knowledge and visions of things "as they are" → Disenchantment → Dispassion → Knowledge and vision of liberation

In the Assutavā Sutta, the Buddha teaches dependent origination to the monastic community.

He selected "ignorance" as the initial factor among the twelve to explain the cyclic causal process, interconnectedness and interdependence, and the three marks of existence (tilakkhaṇa) — impermanence, suffering, and no-self of all conditioned entities. In dependent origination, its "cycle of origination", which leads to rebirth (saṃsāra), aligns with the second Noble Truth. Conversely, its "cycle of cessation", which frees one from saṃsāra, corresponds to the third Noble Truth. Hence, one witnesses (a) these twelve factors spanning three different life periods: past, present, and future, (b) this causal theory conditioning the doctrine of karma, and

Practising virtuous behaviour leads to concentration and wisdom that eliminate the mental defilements to achieve arahantship. (c) its rejection of the idea of a "first cause" or divine creator responsible for all existence. The intricacies of their relationships become apparent in the Mahānidāna Sutta, where the Buddha explains that dependent origination is more profound than what Bhikkhu Ānanda has comprehended. Hence, in the Nettipakaraṇa, the Buddha imparts to him another teaching that can be perceived

where practising virtuous behaviour leads to concentration and wisdom that eliminate the mental defilements to achieve arahantship. With this understanding, one: (i) instils a sense of confidence that the "cycle of cessation" is attainable through his deliberate actions by positively transforming his behaviour; (ii) eliminates the erroneous identification of a fixed "self", halts resisting the natural progression of events, and gains inner freedom. Thus, this raises the second question, “Why does dependent origination resemble a Dharma of the Middle Way?” In the Acelakassapa Sutta, the Buddha advises ascetic Kassapa to avoid the extremes of eternalism (or self-generationism, the belief that one generates his happiness and suffering) and annihilationism (or other-generationism, the belief that external forces create his joy and sorrow) and instead follow the "Dharma of the Middle Way" by adhering to the law of conditionality — dependent origination.

Consequently, in the

Mahāhatthipadopama Sutta, the Buddha claims that "one who realises dependent origination sees the Dharma; one who sees the Dharma realises dependent origination".

In Buddhism, all volitional actions, due to the ethical nature of their cetanā, lead to karma.

Among its various connotations, mindfulness (sati) enables one to (i) filter unfavourable data from entering his six senses to avoid adverse (habitual) reactions and (ii) practise mindfulness through detached observation and non-involvement, subsequently leading to the development of wisdom. Correspondingly, establishing mindfulness (satipaṭṭhāna) becomes a "middle way" between suppression and habitual reactions. Through right mindfulness and the four right efforts, one: (a) develops the concentration and perseverance to uphold his precepts to strengthen his ethics and morality through his samatha practice, and (b) becomes mindful of the presence and absence of the meditation object, and acquires insight leading to its arising, ceasing, prevention or perfection in his vipassanā practice.

This poses the third question, “What comprises

‘right mindfulness’ that effectively supports one in improving moral conduct?”

According to Bhikkhu Anālayo, "right mindfulness" integrates the mental qualities of sati, diligence, clear understanding (sampajāna) and a mental state free from cravings and dissatisfactions. It facilitates witnessing tilakkhaṇa in all phenomena, detachment from all worldly things and eliminating the three poisons through one’s vipassanā practices.

Furthermore, upon developing the "equanimous knowledge of formations" (saṇkhārupekkhā-ñāṇa), one completely frees his heart. The joy that arises leads to the development of the enlightenment factors of tranquillity, concentration, and equanimity, ultimately

resulting in supreme knowledge, liberation and the cessation of karma and rebirth. Additionally, with the cultivation of right perception of phenomena (yonisomanasikāra), one becomes aware of the saṃskāras arising in his mind, as well as the "pulling" feeling and nature of his cetanā. Consequently, one chooses to solely act on wholesome ones to purify his cetanā, saṃskāras, actions and karma.

In Buddhism, all volitional actions, due to the ethical nature of their cetanā, lead to karma. This probes into the fourth question, “Are there any actions that do not produce any future karma?” Bhikkhu Bodhi claims there are, and they belong to the actions of the Buddha and Arahants, which are free from ignorance and cravings

and thus do not leave any residual trace. The commentary Aṭṭhakathā of the Majjhima Nikāya names this fourth type of action as "neither dark nor bright", which does not produce any future karmic effects and leads to destroying the action’s effect in one’s psychic, physical, and external environment.

According to Bhikkhu Buddhadāsa, this action results from no-self and wipes out every good and bad karma. Bhikkhu Payutto further suggests, with the four satipaṭṭhānas as its nutriment, one develops right mindfulness, yonisomanasikāra, and saṇkhārupekkhā-ñāṇa, and brings to perfection the seven factors of enlightenment (bojjhaṅga) to practise this "neither dark nor bright" action.

Ghose likens the Theravāda practice of this action to Japanese Buddhism's method that deploys one's willpower (jiriki) to improve his ethical conduct and meditation to generate profound insights that lead to selfless acts.

This equates to the right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration in the Noble Eightfold Path, which, according to the Buddha, destroys one’s karma. Additionally, scholar Bruce Reichenbach urges one to perform all actions not through cetanā but unwavering spiritual faith (saddhā) and equanimity.

Understanding ethics and morality is crucial as they universally impact our lives.

Comparatively, in Mahāyāna Buddhism, various practices produce analogous effects. For instance, (A) according to Shinran's Pure Land interpretation, fully surrendering self-power (jiriki) to Buddha Amitābha's grace (tariki) and wholeheartedly embracing Buddha Amitabha’s vow result in realising the true mind (shinjin) and purifying all past, present, and future karma into positive karma; and (B) the Mahāratnakūṭa Sūtra emphasises that the pursuit of Buddhahood, dedication to bodhisattva vows, the development of steadfast bodhicitta, mastery of the "six pāramitās", the realisation of the Threefold Wheel of Essential Emptiness and emptiness in all dharmas liberate one from egoism, karma and saṃsāra.

Through such spiritual cultivation methods, one refines his practice in compassion and wisdom, cleanses the imprints of past karmas, and ultimately achieves enlightenment.

Understanding ethics and morality is crucial as they universally impact our lives.

The concepts of karma and interdependence further emphasise their

importance. By gaining a thorough comprehension of dependent origination and the Four Noble Truths, and immersing into the samatha and vipassanā practices, one can cultivate the insight and sagacity necessary to observe all worldly phenomena objectively and practise the Noble Eightfold Path to enhance his ethics and morality, meditative concentration and wisdom.

The cultivation of "right mindfulness" is essential

to observe all conditioned phenomena impartially and continuously analyse one’s mental experiences.

This practice aids one in breaking free from habitual reactions, purifying saṃskāras, cetanā, actions, and karma, and fostering enlightenment factors to further develop moral conduct and virtues.

The Theravāda and Mahāyāna traditions may differ in their practices and ultimate goals of becoming an Arahant

and Buddha respectively, but they do share certain similarities, including (1) using mindfulness as a critical technique; (2) cultivating samatha and vipassanā for achieving mental stability and gaining insight into reality; (3) recognising tilakkhaṇa in all phenomena; (4) eliminating greed, aversion, and delusion; (5) enhancing ethics and morality; and (6) attaining nibbāna and performing the fourth type of action. Hence,

meditation, ethics, and morality are more than just interconnected; they are crucial for developing the wisdom necessary to transcend the "cycle of origination" in attaining ultimate liberation.

Its charming timber roofs, avant-garde design and eco-friendly materials like Glulam timber extends a warm welcome to everyone entering the monastery.

This architectural marvel comprises of three supported canopies which spans over 40 meters and covers a floor area of 1,500 square meters. Its lightweight ETFE (Ethylene TetrafluoroEtilene) roof membrane, a pioneering feature in Singapore, not only enhances visual aesthetics but allows natural light to permeate, creating a peaceful and harmonious environment within. The open design

also facilitates natural airflow, providing a relaxed setting for contemplation and spiritual reflection.

A trailblazer in Singapore, the combination of the ETFE roof membranes with mass timber, and the fabrication of curved edges in the main component of the architecture, sets new standards in sustainable construction. Approximately 300 cubic meters of timber were used in its construction, serving as a commendable carbon sink by sequestering around 300 tons of carbon dioxide.

This masterpiece harmoniously blends tradition and modernity,

reflecting the monastery's dedication to cultural preservation, innovation and eco-friendly architecture. It elevates the serene ambience of Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in an environment that embodies tranquillity, sustainability, and spiritual enlightenment.

Often our inner speech distorts truth, spins stories, creates fear, hate, anxiety, forms attachments, thus causing us pain, suffering and delusion.

Sorrowful Peacock A

beautiful peacock with glittering feathers was happily dancing in the summer breeze. As he admired his stunning plumage, he started singing. However, his rough, husky voice reminded him of his shortcomings as a singer. He got so upset and was almost in tears as he brooded over his flaw.

While the peacock grappled with his discontentment over his singing abilities, a nightingale started singing joyfully. The melodious voice of the nightingale reached the depressed peacock, and it further reminded him about his weakness.

He pondered over the unfairness of his own harsh voice compared to the nightingale's enchanting melody.

The forest spirit witnessed the incident and appeared before the peacock: “Why are you saddened, my child?”

The peacock complained: “Why does the nightingale have such a melodious voice while I don’t? It is frustrating that I cannot sing in this beautiful weather.”

With that, the peacock seamlessly wove his dance into the nightingale’s melody, exhibiting an even more graceful performance than before.

The forest spirit listened to the sad peacock and calmly answered, “Every living thing is special in its own way. Everyone is born with unique traits and characteristics that serve a greater purpose. The nightingale may be blessed with a mellifluous voice, but you are bestowed with an amazing talent for dancing and an impressive set of plumage. Do not compare yourself with others.

Appreciate and accept what you have and make the best of it.

Moral: Comparison is inevitable in life, and having an ambition is not a bad thing. However, there is usually a very thin line between greed and discontentment. Often, we compare our lives to others and lament our shortcomings, resulting in self-inflicted misery. The key to unlocking happiness lies in embracing selfacceptance. Rather than succumbing to unhappiness and envy, strive to cultivate contentment and make the most of what you have.

Realisation dawned on the peacock and he exclaimed, “You are right! How silly of me to compare myself and overlook my unique talents.

I shall now execute them to their fullest potential.”

ive areas in which to practise mindfulness of the speech for both ourselves and others:

1. The suitability of the time and place for the conversation.

2. The truthfulness of the words spoken.

3. The value/benefit of the conversation.

4. The motivations of those involved.

5. The quality/style of speech.

In terns of our own communication, when practising Right Speech based on the above considerations, we try to speak words that are only true and useful, presenting at the appropriate times and places, speaking politely and anchoring our words in loving-kindness.

On the other hand, when observing others' speech, it is important to be mindful if that person in front of us is typically

either telling the truth, deliberately speaking an untruth, or telling an untruth believing it to be true. As the latter is always a possibility, we should not jump to conclusions if we detect an untruth.

The value or benefit meant here is not restricted to content. Someone may, for example, be speaking to us on a relatively trivial matter, but it is calming them down, allowing them to come to terms

with some pain. If so, we might consider that to be beneficial speech. The benefit may be intellectual, emotional or spiritual.

People’s motivations are often mixed. We should remind ourselves that we cannot read minds. All we can interpret is through our fallible assessment of their mental states.

Coarse speech tends to upset and alienate.

Polite speech does not.

When hearing views expressed politely, we are more inclined to listen.

Politeness is intelligent.

f we want to live happily and peacefully in this world, it is imperative that we extend the privilege to others to pursue the same. This approach is fundamental in making the world a good place to live for everyone.

However, this approach can only be achieved if we, ourselves, adhere to these noble principles. A mere hoping for happiness and peace, or praying for them, will not make them happen.

We have to act in ways that uphold human dignity.

By aligning our lives and conduct with ethical standards and treating one another with kindness, we can create a splendid world in our immediate surroundings. On the other hand, if we do not value human life and treat others badly, we will transform the very earth we inhabit into a realm of suffering.

Sometimes, we make mistakes because we are unfamiliar with the fundamentals of life principles. But if every one of us tries to live a harmless and respectable life, we can all enjoy a real

SHOW YOURSELF COMPASSION Nobody is perfect in this world. Hence, accept our imperfections and set realistic expectations. By doing so, we will be able to set goals which are achievable and within our capabilities. When we

accomplish our goals in the process, our self-esteem and self-confidence will definitely be enhanced as we taste the sweetness of success. Additionally, forgiving others is also an act of self-compassion. It does not mean forgetting but rather learning and moving forward.

Remember, seeking help from external sources is not a sign of weakness. As the saying goes, "No man is an island." If you find yourself unable to resolve your problems independently, there is no shame in reaching out for help.

Communication Q: A:

How can we differentiate between expressing our concerns and criticisms in our speech?

Harsh speech occurs when we insult people, criticise, yell, scream, ridicule, make fun of them, and point out their mistakes, all done with the intention to hurt these people or to release our anger. We often associate harsh speech with someone losing control, but it can also be harsh when we ridicule people, tease them about things they are sensitive about, or say something sweetly that we know will hurt them.

Harsh speech is the communication we use that is aimed to hurt people’s feelings and humiliate them in the presence of others.

It can be done out of jealousy, anger, or sometimes out of attachment and ignorance. But it always results in other people’s feelings being hurt.

Does that mean that whenever other people’s feelings are hurt, it is because our speech is harsh? No. There needs to have a negative motivation to hurt or humiliate others. Many a time, people are incredibly super-sensitive, interpreting things as criticism or mockery when they are not.

For instance, we may be asking a question, but somebody gets all upset about us asking that question, or seeking

information might trigger defensiveness, thinking that we are criticising them.

These situations are not necessarily harsh speech. We certainly are not responsible for others’ overreactions. While we should be mindful of other people's sensitivities, it is not always negative karma on our part.

It is crucial to reflect on ourselves when we are on the receiving end and get defensive instantly. We might get upset over a simple "good morning" said in the wrong tone. We need to look at how we inhibit free communication with other people from our side through our habitual misunderstandings and oversensitivity.

In our introspection on how to create good communication with other people, which is what I think we all want to achieve, we may realise that sometimes we are the ones who put up the barriers and then complain about others being mean.

application of Buddha’s teachings in our daily lives and is especially skilled at explaining them in ways easily understood and practiced by Westerners. She is well known for her warm, humorous, and lucid teachings. igmund Freud described parental love as “so moving and at the bottom so childish, it is nothing but the parent’s narcissism born again”. Hopefully, he was wrong about most of us. Still, we do need to ensure, especially in today’s fiercely competitive culture, that our children perceive our love for them as unconditional: they do not need to achieve anything in order to win our love. As glorious as it feels when our children excel, we undermine their ability to be happy if they feel the pressure of a parent's ego needs.

We all have fixed ideas about what makes a worthwhile person (sporting ability, intelligence, musical ability, popularity, charitable deeds), but as parents, our job is to facilitate the process of allowing our children to become their own person. This is how we practise non-attachment, the letting go of desires, in our parenting.

Buddhist father Piero Ferrucci in his book “The Gifts of Parenting” writes about how his mother’s expectations affected his way into adulthood: “All my mother’s expectations have weighed on me, however much she loved me…I sometimes have the feeling I am living an existence that is not entirely mine, a life whose course has been decided by someone else.”

Child psychologists urge us to praise a child for their efforts rather than dwelling only on their results. All they can do is their best.

lover Plant-Based Kitchen and Bar is an establishment opened in late 2023. I do not know the reason why this restaurant was named Clover, however, in the book “The Mind of Clover”, these two positive statements about clovers stood out.

Firstly, “When the clover is cut, its roots die and release their nitrogen and the soil is enriched”. Secondly, “clover is incapable of not nurturing. It can’t do anything but nurture.”

My visit there surpassed expectations, with commendable excellence in food, service and ambience.

Notably, the food portions were generous. My top three preferences among their diverse offerings include: 1. Hotpot Tomato Soup (Half pot) ($28) – A tangy soup with ingredients comprising fish cakes, luncheon meat, meatballs, tofu, tomatoes, carrots, corn and assorted vegetables. Designed for two, the half pot size left our group of four delightfully stuffed.

Clover 2. Stir-fry Eggplants ($14.80) – This dish offers a good balance of sweet, savoury and moderate spiciness.

This dish is particularly appealing for eggplant and spicy food lovers.

3. Lotus Leaf Steamed Rice ($15.80) – The staple food options from Clover are quite varied. From Chinesestyle fried rice to Malaystyle Nasi Goreng, Thaistyle Pad Kra Bao (basil fried rice) to local-style Bak Chor Mee. We wished we could try all but finally decided to go for the Lotus Leaf Steamed Rice (Com Hap La Sen). They could have used a Vietnamese recipe for this dish. The taste is similar and the fragrance from the lotus leaf is pleasantly infused into the rice.

Beyond its culinary offerings, the wall paintings in the restaurant are worth spending some time to admire. Ranging from classic movies to abstract art and holiday destinations, each corner is an attraction on its own.

For those seeking an alfresco experience, their outdoor rooftop seating with high tables provides an ideal place to hang out on weekday evenings when the area is less crowded. Despite offering alcoholic beverages, Clover accommodates non-alcoholic diners with a selection of tea and juices.

Given the absence of a lift in this shophouse, diners with mobility difficulties may find the first-level seating more accessible and convenient.

Their Grilled "Fish" in Fermented Black Bean Broth ($28.80) is a showstopper, proving that vegetarianism can be just as exciting.

The soybean-based "fish" achieves a perfect blend of smokiness from the grill and umami from the fermented black bean sauce, giving a taste of traditional seafood with a vegetarian twist.

A culinary masterpiece, Truffle Hakka Abacus ($10.80), is made from taro and various vegetables. The textures in this dish complement the aromatic truffle essence, creating an innovative and delectable experience.

the Veggie Shark's Fin Soup ($18) is a winner. The rich broth mirrors the original, and the "shark's fin" substitute adds a delightful element with its authentic texture, making it a crowd favourite.

Spice lovers, be sure not to miss the Black Pepper Lion's Mane Mushroom ($18.80) and the Kung Pao Lion’s Mane Mushroom in Yam Ring ($23.80). These dishes prove to be satisfying and indulgent to the palate.

In the former, succulent lion’s mane mushrooms are immersed in a bold black pepper sauce, creating a delightful blend of spiciness and earthiness. Meanwhile, the latter introduces a harmony of crispy yam

and tender lion’s mane mushrooms, all generously coated in a tantalising Kung Pao sauce.

Another mouth-watering dish is the Buttered Abalone Mushroom ($13.80). You get thick slices of tender abalone mushrooms coated in a luscious creamy buttery sauce and infused with the earthy vibes of the mushrooms.

Lotus Vegetarian Restaurant stands out in providing diverse and delicious plant-based options, it not only caters to the discerning taste with its diverse and innovative plant-based offerings but also elevates the dining experience by blending traditional flavours with a modern flair.

Pumpkin Seed Biscuit Ingredients 10 tbsp pumpkin seeds 1 tbsp

flaxseed

4 tbsp

water

¼ tbsp

sea salt

Method: • Combine flaxseeds with water and let it incubate overnight or for a minimum of 8 hours.

• Evenly mix the soaked flaxseeds with the remaining ingredients.

• Divide the mixture into 10 portions.

• Spread each portion thinly on a sheet of baking paper.

• Bake in an oven preheated to 120°C (with both top and bottom heating) for 2 to 3 hours or until completely dry.
