Focus on Gratitude Dear AWA Members,

It is hard to believe that we are already entering into the 2020 Holiday Season. Most of us never imagined that our world would be as it is today. For those of you who have experienced loss or hardship over these months, I am sorry. The AWA has been comforting to me during this time in Singapore, and I hope this AWA sisterhood has been reassuring and positive for you as well.

Over the Fall, the AWA Board, with the help of so many wonderful volunteers, has tried to offer varied and enriching events for you. The continued interesting online Zoom lectures, Bridge, Trivia Nights, Wine Tastings, Listen Ladies, and Book Clubs, and the various live events such as the Coffees, the High Teas, DISH, Bar Nights, Cultural Cooking, Hiking, Walking, Running, Tennis, Golf, Mahjong, Photography, Local Tours, volunteering, and Creative Hands have made life a little more interesting here on the Little Red Dot. And hopefully you’ve met a few new people and had a chance to spend time with friends!

but actually writing down things I’m grateful for each day has been key. I’ve been told by a Positive Psychologist that by capturing thoughts of gratitude on paper, they are encoded and solidify in a different place in your brain as opposed to simply expressing them. (Editor's note: please see page 24 for more on keeping a gratitude journal .)

So, as we enter into this Holiday Season 2020, whether you are traveling or staying in Singapore, please be safe and enjoy the big and the little things in life. Take a moment or two to reflect and to be grateful for things. I’m so grateful and feel so lucky to have such a wonderful Board, and I’m grateful for the many dedicated volunteers who give of their time and expertise and life to make all these wonderful AWA events happen and to enrich the lives of others. Thank you for giving me the chance to benefit from all of you! As John F. Kennedy said, “We must find time to stop and thank the people who make a difference in our lives.”

Community Service

awa members contribute thousands of volunteer hours each year

Something to Celebrate!

Despite COVID safe-distancing restrictions in July and August, AWA’s Community Service groups still completed 63 hours of service in July and 66 in August. Way to go, ladies!

Activities at Food From the Heart: In September, we had thirteen volunteers who completed 150 goodie bags at Food From the Heart while maintaining social distancing and wearing masks. We had quite a few "regulars" who helped make the tasks easier by assisting those who were not familiar with the packing routine. After AWA volunteers prepare the goodies bags, drivers deliver the bags to families at three area schools.

It is rewarding to help so many students and their families in just a couple of hours. We are always looking for new AWA members to join us!

Activities at Willing Hearts: Throughout the Circuit Breaker, AWA has continued to lend its support to Willing Hearts, a non-profit soup kitchen that prepares, cooks, and distributes meals to more than 6,500 recipients in Singapore on a daily basis.

In past years, we’ve seen volunteer slots decrease a bit during the summer when school is on break and families are travelling. But this year, not only have all the Willing Hearts volunteer slots been filled throughout the summer, we’ve also had several ladies bring their children along to share in the experience of volunteering for the underprivileged.

Arts & Culture Discover new worlds

STPI's Shaping Visions Exhibition: Tuesday, November 10 at 10 am.

This guided tour will feature works by Chua Ek Kay, Goh Beng Kwan, Han Sai Por, Amanda Heng and Ong Kim Seng. An ode to the immense cultural contributions of some of Singapore’s most recognized second- and third-generation artists, the exhibition marks the height of their achievement while also denoting the potential for new horizons to be reached and new visions to be shaped. Tiga Negeri Batik Talk:

Tuesday, December 8 at 10 am.

Batik is a textile art from the Nusantara archipelago where patterns are formed through repeated processes of applying a dye-resisting agent (e.g., hot wax) and colors on a piece of cloth. Among the many beautiful batik artworks, Batik Tiga Negeri (Batik of Three Kingdoms) is one textile art legend. A single piece of cloth features three colors dyed from three different batik towns in Indonesia. Join us as we embark on a visual journey to the lands of Batik Tiga Negeri to learn about their symbolism and to be introduced to the makers behind this highly prized textile art. Shaping Visions Event

After Ni Hao

Practice speaking and Listening in mandarin After Ni Hao is a small but lively and welcoming group of ladies who meet Thursday mornings to practice speaking Mandarin. This weekly meeting gives learners a platform to hone their conversational skills in the language. There are two native speakers to help and guide us, one from Beijing and one Singaporean.

Taste the World at AWA Cultural Cooking!

AWA Cultural Cooking meets once a month to share recipes, cook, and enjoy tasting the world through food! We meet from 10 am to 1 pm on the third Thursday of the month at the kitchens of Palate Sensations, located near the Buona Vista MRT. Each monthly session provides a hands-on opportunity to work with others while following that month’s recipe. Cultural Cooking enjoys a variety of talented chefs in our AWA membership. Writers' Group Share your work with friends

AWA Writers’ Group Activities In addition, our members have the wonderful opportunity to submit their work to Writers’ Group’s very own column entitled Writers’ Block in the AWA Magazine (see page 25). When the occasion arises, special sessions for our members may also be organized. For example, in June, one of our members, Emily Oberton, author of the novel Big Fat Positive, shared with us her expertise in self-publishing.

Writers' Group Zoom Call

As you may know, writing can be a lonely occupation.

In spite of this pandemic period, Writers’ Group has continued to meet virtually on Zoom every second and fourth Thursday of the month from 10 am to 12 noon. We have a great time sharing our work. Writers read their drafts to the other members who follow along through screen share. Afterwards, members give supportive and constructive feedback to the writer and many a fascinating and enriching discussion ensues. All members are welcome even if they do not have writing to share, as their feedback is very much appreciated by those who do.

Our members write in a wide variety of genres from memoirs to short stories, from poetry to novels, to essays and articles for blogs and magazines. All levels of writing knowledge and experience are welcome, from beginners to published writers.

AWA’s lovely ladies gather during Coffee with Friends meetups at various cafes around town.

Join us on Fridays from 10:30 am -12:30 pm. You will meet new friends and maybe even experience a new place for coffee! In keeping with the fiveperson rule, we book tables of five at various cafes around central Singapore. Tune in the night before to learn who will be your host and at what location.

Photography Group

The awa Photography group welcomes both new and returning Members The two new co-chairs of the Photography group, Londa and Carol, led a sunset walk around Marina Bay in August. Masked up and ready to go, they broke into two groups of five to photograph some of the iconic landmarks of Singapore against the backdrop of the setting sun. Reflections, architecture, and evening lights all contributed to some wonderful photos. The group included both DLRS users (some with tripods) and iPhone users.

While equipment use ranged from simple to very sophisticated, EVERYONE had a great time. It was a wonderful way to connect with other women through our shared passion.

The sunset walk was our first after the Circuit Breaker.

This November, the Photography group is planning to walk the Central Business District in search of cool architecture, sky gardens, temples, and street photography. The Walking With Women group is happy to be back on the sidewalk post-Circuit Breaker! This fall, we'll be walking on both Mondays and Wednesdays, with two different walks featured on each day in an effort to meet the new rules of exercising with a maximum of five people. As usual, Mondays are longer walks (1.5 hours or more) and Wednesday walks still are just one hour. We'll continue to have multiple walks on Mondays and Wednesdays and may throw in an evening walk every now and then, www.awasingapore.org

What’s been happening in tennis?

What do we have planned?

We were lucky enough to have two events, despite the restrictions put in place due to COVID-19. Thank you, ladies, for following all COVID-19 protocols and social distancing on court!

Clinics

Doubles Match Play: We had sixteen ladies sign up, and we were able to form two groups (intermediate and advanced) playing on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The ladies change partners and venues each week.

It is a great way to meet new people and play some social tennis with a slight competitive edge.

Clinics: Thank you Frank/Savitar for accommodating AWA Tennis within the COVID-19 guidelines. Our Clinics resumed in August and our beginner clinic is full! Sign up early if you are interested in learning to play tennis.

Beginner sessions run on Mondays, and Intermediate on Wednesdays. We cater to all levels, even if you have never picked up a racquet before. Our clinics are run by Savitar and are based at the Fairmont Hotel.

Team Tennis Team Tennis is due to start the week of November 23rd, pending approval. It typically runs in the offseason, from the beginning of December to the end of January. Matches are played on Wednesdays or Thursdays, depending on your experience and our AWA Assessment (TBD this season). The duration of the Team Tennis season will depend upon the number

Running

Running Around SIngapore... And Beyond The number of runners has increased around the globe during the pandemic, and here in Singapore it has not been any different. The AWA Running Group has increased the number of weekly events it offers to meet the demand.

Our 5K Tuesday Run in the Botanic Gardens has expanded and now offers different slots beginning at 7 am. While continuing to offer our Thursday Long Run, we also have recently introduced a Saturday run. This run tends to be longer and has taken the group to Coney Island, Lower Pierce Reservoir and Upper Seletar Reservoir.

In the coming months, the group is planning a 20-mile run across the island, starting at the Woodlands Waterfront Park and ending at Palawan Beach in Sentosa. In addition, one of our members is planning a half marathon starting from East Coast Park to celebrate her birthday. Interested in joining us for a run? Our 11.5 km hike through the MacRitchie Nature Reserve takes roughly two to two-and-one-half hours. It is aimed at medium/advanced fitness hikers who like to keep a fast pace. Hikers are requested to wear appropriate fitness gear, such as old trainers or hiking boots suited to the often muddy terrain, and to bring enough water and mosquito repellent for the hike.

Expat or not, I think everyone should fully immerse themselves in the culture of wherever they are and try not to live in a bubble.

What item in your Singapore home-away-fromhome makes you feel the most settled? Besides the presence of my kids and husband...having our family pictures displayed makes me feel at home, in any home!

Kanika Karu moved to Singapore from the San Francisco area three years ago with her husband and two children. They have embraced Singapore and all the opportunities it offers. Kanika and I met through a mutual friend, and we’ve shared many delicious meals while working on our common goal of eating through Singapore’s diverse culinary offerings.

What assumption or belief about Singapore did you have that was inaccurate? I thought Singapore would mostly be a “concrete jungle”, but I was pleasantly surprised to see how green it is. I love walking along the many trails in Singapore.

What has been your funniest or worst mishap while living in Singapore? The ceiling of my apartment has been leaking for several years…and no one can figure out the source!

How has AWA influenced your time as an expat in Singapore? I’ve picked up new activities like tennis and Mahjong. Through AWA, I have met some amazing women who have become lifelong friends.

Have you volunteered with a group that serves Singaporeans and how has that enhanced your expat experience? I have volunteered through AWA and it is always a positive experience to help those in need. We sometimes forget that no matter how rich and advanced a country is, there are some who need a helping hand. Experiences like these keep us grounded, humble and grateful.

What life lesson have you learned during your time as an expat in Singapore? Complaining or wishing www.awasingapore.org

Have you unpacked all the boxes from your move?

Why or why not? We opened all our boxes and hung all our pictures by the end of the first week. We have lived in four different cities within the US, moving every six years or so. With each move, it seemed like it took forever to unpack boxes and get settled.

This time around, it was most important for our kids to feel secure, so we made our apartment look like home quickly.

Is your quality of life different in Singapore than it was before you were an expat? It is so much better here.

Having help in the home has freed up my time. Now, cooking is fun instead of a necessity. I spend more time with my kids playing games after dinner. I can spend time with friends and even have time to learn how to play tennis. My husband and I feel like we are dating again!

Christin is a seasoned expat who enjoys learning how others adjust to their adopted hometown. She is a member of the AWA Writers Group, a busy mom of two sons and has lived in Singapore since 2018.

TRAVEL, TOURS AND FUN ITINERARY IDEAS AROUND SOUTHEAST ASIA Written by Meg Sine

Singapore Staycations A common sentiment expressed by Singaporeans and expats alike during Circuit Breaker restrictions is “how will we survive without being able to travel internationally?” Indeed, since early April, discretionary travel beyond the borders of the Little Red Dot became unavailable as abruptly as the supermarket stock of toilet paper and disinfectant.

At first, our attention was diverted to organizing stay-at-home offices, online shopping and Zoom meetings. Happily, starting with Phase 2 of the Circuit Breaker in early July, the Government relaxed restrictions to allow restaurants, some hotels and tourist attractions to reopen with precautions and help revive Singapore’s normally robust tourism economy.

It wasn’t long before “staycation” became a social media buzzword. Suddenly, a luxury getaway with no jet lag or luggage limits was as easy to book as a Redmart grocery order. If a staycation is on your COVID bucket list, here are a few reviews from AWA members on their recent staycations at some of Singapore’s most stylish hotels.

Capella General Manager Fernando Gibaia remarked, “Since reopening, we see an average of 65% to 70% occupancy. Because international travel is not permitted yet, the next best thing closer to vacation would be Sentosa, which provides a resortstyle vibe.”

Tori reports that, while the hotel was at the level Gibaia described, it never felt crowded -- except when trying to find a lounge chair at the pool. Some of the hotel’s more unusual guests are actually wild peacocks (and peahens) that roam freely around Sentosa; Tori found they could be quite aggressive, even helping themselves to the complimentary snacks at the outdoor bar.

Made world famous by the 2018 United StatesNorth Korea summit, this landmark hotel also offers a unique Heritage Tour highlighting its history as a British military installation dating back to the mid 1800s.

AWA Magazine Editor Tori Nelson and her husband recently spent the weekend at the Capella because they wanted to feel like they were out of the city. For their yearly tradition of celebrating their joint birthdays, they wanted to be near the beach and do some hiking, but also enjoy a nice spa visit afterwards. Capella fit the bill perfectly.

AWA member Thetis Tsitidou and her husband chose the elegant Raffles Hotel for their staycation because of its character. A professional architect, Thetis was curious to see the results of the latest restoration and reports that it exceeded her expectations. The 24-month construction project removed years of additions down to the hotel’s original bare bones.

Amazingly, this luxury accommodation was offered at 50% off.

Andrea had fun packing and needed an extralarge suitcase to bring three outfits per day. Her daughter played at the enormous hotel pool and in the hotel bathtub—both fun and clean! After four days’ relaxation, the final chapter of their getaway was an exciting experience at iFly Singapore Sentosa, a popular attraction that simulates the thrill of skydiving.

Cindy Carver and her husband have always been intrigued by the beauty and history of The Fullerton Hotel. Their one-night staycation package included an ensuite-served, four-course dinner with wine and 20% off spa treatments. They had a newly renovated, luxuriously appointed room on the 7th floor, with a balcony overlooking Marina Bay.

Despite rainy weather, Cindy and her husband enjoyed the location along the riverfront and a visit to the Asian Civilisations Museum.

The MBS lobby was full, and access to the rooftop infinity pool was restricted to early risers able to obtain a queue number below 200. The pool remained at maximum capacity from 10 am until 11 pm.

Sofitel Resort & Spa, Sentosa Andrea Brankin and her husband chose Sofitel Singapore Sentosa Resort & Spa because it was a good fit for their busy work schedules and their nineyear-old daughter. They simply needed a break from being at home all the time when they normally would have been enjoying their annual summer home leave trip to Chicago and New England.

We grabbed a weekend package and booked a garden view room on the 37th floor. The best part of the five-star room was the incredible view from the balcony over the Supertrees and Flower/Cloud Forest Domes of Gardens by the Bay.

We enjoyed two visits to the pool -- once during the day and once in the evening, when we could not stop snapping photos of the city lights on the perimeter of Marina Bay. I am a swimmer, so after soaking up the views, I thoroughly enjoyed my water workout 57 floors above the ground.

After a day walking the paths of Gardens by the Bay, we enjoyed our best meal of the staycation at Yardbird Southern Table and Bar in The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands. We indulged our appetite for some down-home comfort food with fried chicken and lobster mac and cheese. We certainly had our fill of good food and fun at MBS. Meg lived and traveled all over Asia for almost 25 years before moving to SIngapore in 2018. She enjoys biking, walking and quilting with AWA Creative Hands.

2020 is the year to start new holiday traditions, and Singapore has plenty to offer for the whole family.

Here are five ways to get into the spirit.

1. Fa La La La La at Shangri-La La La La La! Book your reservation to build a gingerbread house with the Shangri-La’s pastry chef at the Gingerbread House Children’s Workshop.

2. Rock around the Supertrees at Gardens by the Bay! The Gardens host Christmas Wonderland for the entire month of December. Luminaria sculptures light up the pathways at night, and the Flower Dome exhibits a whimsical holiday floral display during the day.

3. Oh what a sight Orchard Road is at night! If you need a light fix, this is the place to take an evening stroll. It is lit up and decked out like no other street in Singapore. Ornaments are hung on the light posts with care. Twinkling stars dangle overhead. And a 24-foot menorah illuminates the sidewalk in front of the Mandarin Gallery.

4. Dashing through the snow, to Tanglin you must go! Frolic in foam snow, catch a snowflake on your tongue and check a few presents off your list at Tanglin Mall’s Christmas Winterland.

5. Dream of a white Christmas and head to the airport! Even if you don’t fly somewhere, the Jewel at Changi Airport will transport you to the North Pole with a giant Christmas tree, a snow walk and a sound and light show at the HSBC rain vortex.

I wished I had more time to order the banana fritters and/or kueh salat but it can easily be my excuse for next time when in the neighborhood.

There are many bar options around the Tanjong Pagar area. Which one do you choose when you want to have a good cocktail? I suggest checking out Jekyll & Hyde because it has a different vibe, a definite sense of coolness, and a good menu. Young locals seem to like this location too, and you may have to find a position around the bar if space is limited. Sometimes you want decadent, fun food, like a corn dog or a fried Mars bar. Time to ditch the salmon and kale salad for Korean-Mexican street eats at Vatos Urban Tacos! KoreanAmerican fusion has its origins in Los Angeles (via Kogi Korean BBQ food trucks). Vatos translates the concept from the streets of L.A. back to Seoul and delivers it to Singapore. Although it was not quite hole-in-the-wall enough for us, we were pleased to expand our horizons.

Sunday Dinner Chomp: Vatos was surprisingly busy for a Sunday evening, especially these days, with covered outdoor and indoor seating. It offers typical options for a Mexican restaurant, with a Korean kick.

Topping choices for the colossal nachos include standards like carnitas or carne asada ($31), but you can add items like short ribs for a Ko-Mex touch. By colossal, we mean lots of everything: chips, cheese, guacamole, sour cream, jalapenos and meat. This could be your meal. The short ribs taco, featuring sweet/spicy Korean braised short ribs ($12 for 2), was delicious. The Baja fish taco was crispy and came with a crunchy slaw. The carnitas could have used a bit more moisture. The pork belly burrito was packed with rice, guacamole, beans and your choice of toppings. Drinks ranged from frozen margaritas to the slightly silly Corona-rita. Reasonably priced craft beers come in draft. Dishes that sounded tasty but we didn't get to try included a variation on guacamole (with blue cheese and bacon) and kimchi carnitas fries (a bit over the top?). Maybe that’s the point.

Vatos is a slightly over-the-top place to have drinks and indulge in tasty, not-so-serious food with friends and family.

Ambience: Industrial hip meets colonial classic. Lively spot for celebrations and meeting friends.

You're Not Alone... Really

How to Develop a Gratitude Practice Did you know showing gratitude can retrain your brain to be more positive?

Something as simple as writing down what you’re grateful for on a regular basis can help your mood by leading you to see the bright side of life. Still, creating a plan to express gratitude every day may seem daunting. After all, starting a new habit— however good you know it will be for you—is always challenging.

In the currently precarious situation of COVID-19, to balance the hard moments with the silver linings, I am using an iPhone app called Gratitude Journal 365 to list what I’m grateful for every day. I also sometimes use a tiny notebook I found at Typo where I can manually write down my thoughts of gratitude.

Some days I’m really happy that the list gets long!

But other days, it’s short, and that’s OK, too. You can find a variety of gratitude apps in your phone’s app store.

There are more ways to kickstart a gratitude practice, even as you write down your grateful thoughts:

--Appreciate the little things. Nothing is too small to include, especially on hard days where barely anything seems right.

--Challenges can be hard, but we don’t grow as much without them. Being grateful even about our difficulties can expand our minds and hearts.

Gratitude is not trite, and no one is going to judge your journal.

--Look forward to your gratitude moments. Maybe they come as you set aside a few minutes before you get out of bed in the morning, or before you turn in at night. Maybe it’s with a quiet cup of coffee. Make the time, and remember that even one minute of gratitude time counts.

--Let others know you are grateful for them. Thank yous go a long way nowadays, as we’re all working so hard to keep going in this new COVID life.

Neuroscience has found that there’s positive brain change gained from having an “Attitude of Gratitude.”

A 2017 study published by UC Berkeley’s Greater Good Institute found that people who had MRIs done during a gratitude writing exercise showed greater neural sensitivity in the medial prefrontal cortex, a brain area associated with learning and decision-making, as well as empathy and emotion.

“This suggests that people who are more grateful are also more attentive to how they express gratitude,” according to the authors.

The same study further explains that gratitude helps us disconnect from negative and toxic emotions, quite literally, by using fewer negative words and more positive ones, as well as shifting focus from feeling envy and resentment, to being appreciative for someone or something in your life.

It may take some time to feel the benefits, but like anything we do to improve our outlook, keeping a gratitude journal could be worth the effort in the long run.

COVID Journal Entry No. 1.

I wonder if I am in the minority when I peer out the front door towards a re-opening world, burgeoning with renewed opportunities to interact with others and return to public spaces, and wish I could slam that door shut. After flinching at the enormity of the measures against COVID-19, it felt to me like a lucky confluence of personal tendencies and public health demands, that I stay in my home as much as possible, interacting with others electronically rather than in person. Hanging up on video conferences because of insufficient broadband or reading for an entire day was finally my civic duty, not a guilty pleasure. For those of us moles blinking fiercely in the returning light, this transition is another struggle.

How can I lament the reversal of work from home or sheltering in place, when those measures were challenging to take on?

At the outset, it was like watching a mushroom cloud rise, wondering how high it could reach, before the radiation would rain down on all of us. Next, there was the certainty that my hands had a big ol’ gob of virus all over them, from having used my swipe cards, or my phone, or a door handle. As the weeks wore on, I succumbed to the loneliness of walking, working, sitting, alone, while my spouse sat not twelve feet from me on conference calls, fifteen hours a day. Awake at the middle of the night, I had no shadow of a doubt that I had infected everyone I’d come into contact with on my errands, and was not sick myself, but a silent spreader. When there is an end, it will be that kind of after, in which the regular routine can never resume in the same way as before the beginning.

I’ve learned something from five months of sitting at home, poring over Coronavirus news, and grapple better with the fear now. I follow the rules, trust the local authorities, tend the optimistic flame that the honest, selfless professionals will prevail and help us help ourselves. Do I have magical lenses on? Perhaps it is because I am in Singapore. Having to stay at home, shut down business, shipping and travel, and quit the routines that have us mingle is not seen as punishment exacted by one side upon all the other sides. In Asia, where SARS took a terrible toll in 2003, sharp collective memory makes the urgency of complying unquestionable, even for those who didn’t experience it firsthand. These lessons from history have led me to appreciative compliance.

The circumstances beyond this Red Dot are not nearly as favorable.

Many skeptical, angry folks across the globe cannot be persuaded that a flu killing old people somewhere out there should dictate their activities closer to home. The response to the virus seemed to pit economics against health. Some global leaders issued public denials of the severity of the virus, leaving their citizens without direction, and provoking disbelief, division and outrage. As for me, if solitude, separation and distancing means protecting both my health and the public’s at large, I will do it. I realize that it’s the same for others, but not for everyone, nor all the time. The range of experiences and mindsets has led to divergent, incompatible points of view, but in the end, there are still germs, aerosols, and microbes among us too.

Pundits throughout the world rewrite the unfolding story, sometimes inventing heroes and culprits in a global tragedy. Now, as restrictions lift, and I meet people in physically shared spaces again, I bear in mind that my connection to them may be fragile.

It’s a rare moment when a large swath of people on Earth experience the same event at once and come away with shared impressions. In August 2017, my husband and I witnessed a total eclipse of the sun in North America. At the eclipse’s peak, the sun formed a corona of light around the completely darkened moon, and the Earth lay in its shadow. Without our own sun-viewing glasses, we watched the shadows on the ground become crescents, as daylight shifted to an eerie dimness. A festive atmosphere prevailed, and people in our local park watching through goggles offered us a look. The sun and the moon, coinciding in the daytime to mimic night, were a spectacular sight. The eclipse traced a path across the hemisphere, connecting all of us who bathed in its glow. That same day, my secondary school held a vigil to protest against white supremacists who had rallied in North Carolina just weeks before. It was almost in the same breath, that something so giant and cosmic united people and another thing, also big, but not at all cosmic, exposed a deep divide.

Sweeping across the globe now, this highly infectious Corona creates an ominous connection that I fear could tear us apart as much as it could unite us.

Repatriating Amid a Pandemic

Preparing to repatriate to America, I kept coming across the phrase “reverse culture shock.” It turns out to be rather accurate. Even if you’re back with your family, in your old town, with your old friends, there’s a lot of adjusting involved.

Repatriate amid a pandemic and, well, things get complicated. They may look the same, but nothing is quite the way it was. We left Country A (America) to

Welcome back. We realize our own family is not in our “bubble of safety.” Wisely or not, we hug our boys. But not my in-laws, not our siblings, not our friends. After almost a year away. It’s hard.

The biggest challenge in writing about repatriating amid a pandemic is that, in America, your experience depends entirely on where you repatriate to. Here, in New Jersey, it’s not that bad right now. But it doesn’t feel quite Singapore-good. Masks? Mandatory some places, not others. Mandatory to possess in parks, but optional to wear if you can distance. Apparently optional if you’re a group of teens hanging out on the sidewalk on a summer day. Mandatory in stores.

Speaking of stores, no QR codes. No contact tracing, so why bother?

There’s social distancing, but it’s different from Singapore. Actually, it’s better. Signs everywhere remind us to stay six -- not three -- feet apart. (We debate whether Singapore’s big enough for everyone to stay six feet apart. It is.) Distancing just

be expats in Country B (Singapore), but we’ve come home to Country C (“Pandamerica”?). Country C is a lot like Country A, but different.

It starts with flying home. I plan to hold my breath for 26 hours just to be safe, but it proves unnecessary.

Five people join us in business class to Tokyo; two on our flight from Tokyo to Newark, New Jersey.

Economy is not full. Our mid-afternoon layover in Narita feels more like midnight, it’s so empty.

Arriving in New Jersey, there’s no line at Immigration.

When the agent asks where we flew from, I say “Singapore” and wait for a questionnaire, a screening, a thermometer in my forehead.

“Hmm,” the agent says. “How’d you like Singapore?”

Cautious, not wanting to burst into tears, I fake-smile and take the easy route. “It was great.”

“You’re good to go,” he replies. “Welcome back.”

feels more doable here – supermarket aisles are wider, for example. And while New Jersey restaurants just began indoor dining at 25% capacity, I’ll pass, thank you. I prefer the al fresco dining at sociallydistanced tables under tents set up on streets closed to traffic. It’s lovely now, but cold weather is coming.

Then what? Same goes for exercise. As in Singapore, everyone is walking or biking outdoors — for now.

I’ve ordered a stationary bike, but it will take months to arrive. It seems everything here is on backorder.

Even amid a pandemic, the work of repatriation remains the same. There are boxes to unpack. So many boxes. Given my current penchant for staying home, that’s okay.
