From the Superintendent
The Avon Lake City School District, Avon Lake High School, and the Avon Lake Drama Club welcome you to the Daniel B. Ross, Ph.D. Performing Arts Center and the Performin’ Shoremen’s presentation of The Little Mermaid.
Avon Lake student performances have a long tradition of high quality, challenging, and thoughtful productions. The faces on stage and behind the scenes change, but the Performin’ Shoremen of 2024 are dedicated to honoring the traditions of the past while setting new standards for the future with their performance. We welcome everyone to what will be an inspiring evening packed with fun and high energy. Based on one of Hans Christian Andersen's most beloved stories and the classic animated film, Disney's The Little Mermaid is a hauntingly beautiful love story for the ages. With music by eight-time Academy Award winner, Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater and a compelling book by Doug Wright, this fishy fable will capture your heart with its irresistible songs, including "Under the Sea," "Kiss the Girl" and "Part of Your World."
Thank you to all the students, staff, parents, guardians, and community members who work so hard preparing for these performances. Their dedication has made this production possible. Preparation for The Little Mermaid has been intense; however, our drama program remains outstanding because of the year-round support that is shown by the Avon Lake community and the ALHS Drama Boosters. Together we set the stage for now and for future Performin’ Shoremen.
With tradition comes high expectations, and this performance is true to form. The Little Mermaid warms your heart as you watch Ariel, King Triton's youngest daughter, pursue the human Prince Eric in the world above, bargaining with the evil sea witch, Ursula, to trade her tail for legs. But the bargain is not what it seems, and Ariel needs the help of her colorful friends, Flounder the fish, Scuttle the seagull and Sebastian the crab to restore order under the sea. Sit back, watch, and listen to an outstanding cast and enjoy the efforts of an amazing crew as they delight you with memorable songs and dances. Thank you for being in attendance and we hope to see you again at future performances.
Sincerely,
Joelle Magyar Superintendent Avon Lake City School District

MEET OUR DIRECTOR
Patricia Frank
Patricia Frank’s love of drama grew out of years of cheerleading and dance, including performing four years with the Slippery Rock University Dance Theater Company. Following college, Patricia continued to choreograph for high school and community theaters. After marrying David, she found her way onto the stage of the Old Firehouse Theater in Avon Lake, where she acted in favorites, such as Blithe Spirit and The Foreigner. In 1994, the Franks volunteered to serve as Drama Directors at Bay Presbyterian Church, where they collaborated on musical productions, including Resurrection, Two from Galilee and Journey to the Cross. David and Patricia continue to (occasionally) act in and direct community and regional theater productions, most recently Newsies with TrueNorth Cultural Arts. In 2008, Ms. Frank took over the reins of Drama Director at Avon Lake High School, where she has directed over 30 plays and musicals. For the past two summers, Patricia has enjoyed the challenge of teaching drama and producing shows at Camp Pemigewassett, an all-boys sleep-away camp, in Wentworth, NH. Since 2016, Patricia has also served as the manager of the Dr. Daniel B. Ross Performing Arts Center. Patricia and David enjoy volunteering their theatrical staging skills as the set designers and visual artists for the Marching Shoremen Band. Being mother to her beautiful and talented children, Jordan, Melanie (daughter-in-law) & Michaella, continues to be Patricia’s favorite role. Ms. Frank would like to extend her heartfelt gratitude to David, the incredible Drama Boosters, the production team, and the amazing cast and crews!

DIRECTOR’S NOTES
The Wonderful World of Disney was one of the few television shows that my four siblings and I could consistently agree on watching together. This was back in the dark ages when none of us owned our own phone, computer, iPad, etc. We did own two TV’s; but one belonged exclusively to my dad. Our only interaction with that TV was to serve as dad’s remote control when he needed channels changed. The magical world of Disney has reached many of us through TV, films, stage adaptations and theme parks. Whether you were introduced to The Little Mermaid by way of the original Hans Christian Anderson tale, the classic Disney animated film or the stage musical adaptation, the theme resonates the same emotional power. The Little Mermaid is a story about identity and the struggle to find one’s place in the world. It is also a story that emphasizes sacrificial love; and how putting the needs of others before our own can build stronger, more fulfilling relationships and enhance our own well-being.
With music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater, and book by Doug Wright, Disney’s The Little Mermaid musical retains the most beloved songs and moments from the original film while deepening the core relationships and themes to form an even more moving and relevant story.
As I’m typing this, Ariel’s words keep running through my mind. . . “If only you could know the things I long to say. If only I could tell you what I wish I could convey. It’s in my every glance. My heart’s an open book. . . “
Without the many individuals who unselfishly provided their own “sacrificial love,” this production would not have been possible. Collaborating with our musical director Emilio Jarufe, orchestra conductor Josh Brunger, guest choreographer Kaylea Foraker, our amazing Drama Boosters, the entire Production Team, and of course, the creative and energetic cast members has been a true blessing! On behalf of the entire cast and crew, we hope you enjoy our presentation of Disney’s The Little Mermaid. Thank you for joining us this evening.

MEET OUR MUSIC DIRECTOR
Emilio J. JarufE m.m.Ed.

Additionally, Mr. Jarufe teaches Advanced Placement Music Theory, and is the vocal director for the Avon Lake High School Theatre program.
In his 9th year of directing, Mr. Jarufe oversees the Choral program, which is steeped in more than seventy- five years of tradition. Mr. Jarufe is proud to vocal direct a program which serves just under four hundred students, grades nine through twelve; a program that is filled with students who truly appreciate, and are eager to grow in, the faculties of choral music.
In the spring of 2015, Mr. Jarufe completed his undergraduate degree in Music Education from Cleveland State University in Cleveland, Ohio, where he studied under the tutelage of Mr. William G. Zurkey. Feeding a desire to continue growing and learning as an educator, Mr. Jarufe completed a Masters of Music Education at Kent State University (2019) under Dr. Christopher Vensile. Now, Mr. Jarufe is in the process of completing a second Master of Music in Music Technology from Southern Utah University (Anticipated 2024). Mr. Jarufe attributes much of his success to those educators who have given their time to help him grow in education and as a person.
Under the direction of Mr. Jarufe, the one hundred and fifty-four students of the Avon Lake High School Honors Chorale have performed in some of the United States’ most historic venues including, St. John The Divine, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and Carnegie Hall. The Honors Chorale has earned straight superior markings at the Ohio Music Education Associations State level adjudicated event for well over twenty years. In 2022, for the first time in school history, all four school choirs advanced to the OMEA state level event, ushering in a new level of academic excellence in choral music. In 2020, Mr. Jarufe launched the Avon Lake High School Contemporary Program transforming the storied group Merples and bringing to life a new group Immix. Since their inception, both groups have performed for various national events. In 2023, The Merples were selected as the Headliners for Kettering National A Cappella Festival, while Immix was selected to perform as a part of the educational showcase.
Mr. Jarufe has collaborated with the ALHS Drama Club for five years as a sound engineer, and is now in his second production as vocal music director.
