Having Laptop Problems?

STUDENT TECH ASSISTANTS ASSIST IN SOLVING COMPUTER ISSUES “Most of the problems we have are reverting changes,” Ward said. “Hardware stuff is the thing we cannot do because it takes repairs. That is more of a professional service.”

With freshman and seniors receiving laptops this year, 50 percent of the school is equipped with a laptop. Because of that many computers, malfunctions are bound to happen. If this happens, students are sent to either the main library or the Advanced Learning Center’s (ALC) library to the technical help centers. “Students can come in with a laptop problem,” senior and student technical Jeremy Rasor said. “I can help [the student] out.” Student technical assistants like Rasor will try and solve technical problems on their own, but if they cannot fix the problem by themselves, a professional technical advisor will be asked for further assistance. However, according to senior tech in the ALC library, Seth Ward, there are not many problems that most student techs cannot help to solve.

THE MOST COMMON PROBLEMS ARE WIFI AND PRINTING. NINE OUT OF 10 PROBLEMS ARE PRINTING.” Seth Ward, 12

If a computer is slow or if it is infected by a virus, there is not much that a student tech can do, so they will call upon one of the professional techs. Professional techs are employed by the school to see if there are any solutions to the problem. Very rarely, according to Ward, does a student’s laptop have problems that would require extensive

hardware repairs. “The most common problems are wifi and printing,” Ward said. “Nine out of 10 problems are printing and wifi.” According to Ward, another problem that some techs have helped to remedy are battery problems. “For some students, the problem is that they did not turn it off the right way,” Ward said. “Maybe they held down the power button, or for some students, maybe they pulled the battery.” Senior students can take Tech Support as a one semester or a whole year class. There are no prerequisites required. The class consists of working in the main library or ALC library and assisting students who have problems with their computers. Student techs have been a part of AHS’s libraries for six years, and they will continue to be a part of the school as technology advances.

WHAT PROBLEMS CAN THE TECH CENTER HELP YOU WITH? Problems connecting to the school’s wifi are the most common problem that a student tech can solve.

hall and technical support center for seniors. Will that change in the future? ALC Principal Stephanie Bode said there are no definite plans, but an evolution of that space is something the staff will discuss. What do students think the space could be used for? Check out some of their thoughts below. “We should turn the area into a lounge area for seniors. It can be used for studying and relaxing.”

Ever since the construction of the ALC six years ago, the staff has been evaluating the use of non-classroom spaces to ensure students have a healthy learning environment. The ALC library, once a fullservice media center, moved staff and resources to the main building before the start of this school year, and the ALC space became a study
