Exhibit Pieces of Art

AUBREY HAYDEN SHARES INSPIRATION

Sophomore Aubrey Hayden snapped the above photo while walking through Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis on a cold day in January. She said she wanted to stress the pictured statue. “The neutral background gives emphasis to the subject,” Hayden said. Hayden said she stumbled upon the statue and could not help but capture it for her photography project. The photo became one of her favorites from the class because of the emotion attached to it. “This picture makes me feel peaceful because it’s so simple,” Hayden said. Simplicity and tranquility were the inspiration for the pictures she captured for this project, and she said both aspects are close to her heart.

ELYSE RHOADES’S PLANET SERIES

As a part of her planet series, senior Elyse Rhoades transformed her cousin into Pluto the planet. “I was turning the planets into portraits,” Rhoades said. “Since Pluto is a dwarf planet, or it was, I decided to make it a picture of my cousin.” Every planet that Rhoades painted had different emotions associated with it, and for Pluto, she hoped to convey sorrow. “I just wanted it to have a sort of cold feeling, and kind of sad at the same time.” Pluto is one of the paintings that Rhoades said she is most proud of. “I really like that painting,” Rhoades said. “It’s probably one of [the] best ones I’ve ever done, so it makes me feel accomplished.”

NICOLE DWENGER AND SYMMETRICAL CITIES

Symmetry was the driving force for Nicole Dwenger when taking the above picture of architecture. Dwenger said older cities have always captivated her. “I really enjoy how symmetrical everything is and the [feeling] you get when [a city is] a little rundown and whatnot,” Dwenger said. Dwenger was able to manipulate the framing of the subject matter to make the picture more balanced. “It honestly makes me feel kind of complete,” Dwenger said. She said she hopes pictures like hers allow people to understand that cities are not always unpleasant to the eye. “I want people to see the beauty in cities and not look at them [as] being ugly and polluted because some of them can be pretty in certain aspect.”
