STAFF SUPPORT PINK SHIRT DAY Avondale College staff were in the pink on Friday - quite literally - as they showed their support for the Pink Shirt Day campaign to stop bullying and show aroha and kindness.

Celebrated annually around the globe, Pink Shirt Day began in Canada in 2007 when two students took a stand against homophobic bullying, after a peer was bullied for wearing a pink shirt.

In Aotearoa, Pink Shirt Day aims to create schools, workplaces and communities where all people feel safe, valued and respected.

Our students had also shown their support for this cause earlier in the week, with funds from Tuesday's mufti day being donated to The Mental Health Foundation.

PARENT SURVEY RESULTS Greetings from the Board of Trustees In Term 4 of last year we conducted an anonymous survey of parents and caregivers with the view to finding out about how well NCEA and Cambridge pathways are understood, and how suitable you might think they are for your children.

Thank you very much to all the parents who participated in this survey. Below are some snapshot results.

NCEA • When asked if they could change one thing about NCEA, a strong response was given by parents who felt the system ‘encouraged mediocrity’ and allowed students to stop trying once they had obtained the necessary number of credits. A similar number of responses indicated they felt the complexity of the credits and grading system was confusing and could be improved.

• The thing that parents liked most about NCEA was the year-long assessment and the mixture of internal and external examinations which means results are not reliant on one end-of-year exam. Some indicated they liked the fact that NCEA allows for every student to succeed. Others liked the diverse range of subjects available.

CAMBRIDGE • When asked about changing one thing about Cambridge, a number of respondents suggested introducing an internal assessment component, some suggested offering a wider range of subjects, others suggested the fees be lowered.

•When asked 'What is the thing about Cambridge you like the most?', ‘Internationally recognised qualification’ was the most common response, followed by ‘academic rigour’, and assessment by examination.

GENERAL COMMENTS A majority of respondents indicated they were positive about Avondale College offering the choice of both NCEA and Cambridge to our students.

Avondale College is proud to offer the dual NCEA/Cambridge pathways.

Student results recently and historically indicate high levels of achievement across both pathways.

In the main we can see that a majority of respondents have some understanding of both pathways, and some understanding of the differences in teaching and learning for each pathway.

However, it appears that we could be providing more information about how they each work and about how tertiary institutions view the results. Our upcoming NCEA and Cambridge information evenings (Cambridge: Tuesday 28 May; NCEA: Tuesday 4 June at 7pm in the theatre) may be useful for parents who would like to further their understanding of these pathways, and information on each is also available on our website.

I should note that quite recently the Ministry of Education has announced pending changes to the NCEA framework and we will ensure we communicate effectively with you regarding these changes.

Some feedback in the survey also contained matters specific to classroom teachers and deans. We would encourage you to contact your child’s teachers if you have any questions pertaining to your child. We would also like to highlight the fact that information on your child’s attendance and achievement data is readily available to all parents through our Family Connection parent portal.

AUCKLAND WRITERS FESTIVAL

SENIOR DRAMA PRODUCTION The senior Drama students all performed in a piece of theatre last week.

These performances, for a live audience of their families and friends, were the culmination of eight weeks of in and out of class learning and rehearsals.

The Year 13s all performed in a farce by Anton Chekhov; either The Bear or The Proposal. The Bear follows the character Grigory Smirnov as he attempts to get a long unpaid debt settled. However, arguments over the appropriate behaviour of men and women ensue and in the attempt to settle this rift, Smirnov and the widow Popova agree to a duel with pistols, the elderly servant keels over, and... love sparks fly!

On Thursday 16 of May, 40 Avondale students attended Waituhi O Tāmaki at the Aotea Centre. It was an incredible day full of inspiring speakers, such as Markus Zusak (author of bestselling novel The Book Thief) Akala (the founder of the Hip Hop Shakespeare Company,) YA author Eileen Merriman, and Renee Brown, who performed some of her amazing spoken word poetry. The students represented Avondale incredibly well, asking poignant questions, and showing great enthusiasm for each speaker. We all walked away with our book collections expanded and our creative writing juices fizzing!

In The Proposal, a marriage proposal is marred by palpitations, a dispute over land ownership, arguments as to whose dog is faster, an eventual heart attack and an almost death! But, don't worry, all was okay in the end.

The performance evening was filled with laughter from an appreciative audience.

Our Year 11 and 12 students performed Heaven by American playwright Richard Stuart Dixon. This play is a satirical look at the beginning of the world, and follows the story of a corporation tasked with creating the universe. They are, of course, infiltrated by a malevolent saboteur... This large combined class can be congratulated on how well they collaborated to perform in this piece. It was highly energetic and received well by all.

TRAVELWISE EXPO Students had a great time at the Travelwise Road Safety Expo on Thursday. Activities included trying to catch a ball wearing “fatigue vision” goggles, a giant snakes and ladders game, spot the hazard, and the police were also present to give valuable information about road safety and the driver's licence test.

Nuala Edmundson (Year 11) has been selected to represent New Zealand in the 2019 Trans-Tasman Archery Championships, to be held in Auckland in July. This is Nuala's first time wearing the silver fern in an international competition. Nuala’s outstanding achievements across the season are listed below.

ATHLETICS

Tremayne Redman-Gardner received the Outstanding Athlete award at the Whau Youth Awards last Friday. Tremayne has a bright future in both hurdles and high jump. Last year at the NZ Secondary Schools Championships held in Dunedin, Tremayne competed in the Junior Boys grade (Under 16) in high jump. He cleared a personal best of 1.80m, placing him 4th in New Zealand within the Secondary Schools sector. Earlier this year, Tremayne competed in the College Sport Auckland Championships in hurdles and in high jump, winning a silver medal for his high jump, with a clearance of 1.80m. He was also selected to represent the Auckland team in the North Island Secondary Schools Championships held in Tauranga. He placed 5th overall on countback, clearing a new personal best of 1.85m. Tremayne was also selected to represent Auckland at the Jennian Homes NZ Track & Field Champs 2019 held in Christchurch, in the U18 grade. The conditions were very cold and windy, and the high jump group all struggled to find their form. However, Tremayne's 110m hurdles event saw him win a silver medal - a huge achievement at such a large event.

He was also part of the 4x100m Auckland relay team which won a bronze medal.

A second Avondale College student, Angelina Revell-Lewis, was also recognised for her achievements in athletics this week. Angelina received the Athletics Auckland Inc New Official of the Year award at the Athletics Auckland Officials luncheon held over the weekend. Although still only in Year 9, Angelina has officiated at athletics meets over the last year locally, nationally and internationally.

WHEN DO I PAY? All fees must be paid in full, to Avondale College by Friday 28 June 2019, by 4.00pm.

NCEA FEES ABOLISHED The Minister of Education has announced that families of secondary students will no longer have to pay fees to enter NCEA and New Zealand Scholarship from 2019 year onwards.

This change will remove financial barriers and ensure all the credits received towards NCEA will be visible in a student’s Record of Achievement.

If you have already paid these fees for 2019, a credit balance will be placed on your family account to be used for any other purpose, or alternatively you can ask for a refund via email to accounts@avcol. school.nz.

Girls B: Had an outstanding win, beating Dilworth 5-1.

Girls C: Went down 4-2 to One Tree Hill.

Boys B: Took on Kings College and won 4-2.

Boys C: Struggled against MAGS, losing 5-1.

Boys A: Defeated ACG Parnell 5-1 on Friday night.

Girls A: Narrowly lost to ACG Parnell, 4-2.

BASKETBALL

Senior A Boys: The boys travelled to St Peter’s to take on our rivals on Friday night. The game was neck and neck, tied at 99-99 with four seconds to play. A foul in the bonus saw St Peter’s make one free throw to seal the game, 100-99.

U19 Boys: Opened their season with a tough loss to Lynfield, 38-23.

Junior A Boys: Put in a strong performance, beating Rutherford 39-19.

Junior B Boys: Came up just short against Henderson, losing 33-30.

Junior Girls: The Junior Girls Basketball team played St Mary's Blue on Thursday. St Mary's came out firing at the start, gaining an 18 point lead. A change up in the game plan put pressure on their ball handlers and helped us bring the deficit back to six points by the end of the third. A few bad turnovers and a couple of missed layups set us back by ten points, and the game ended in a 36-46 point loss. The girls improved from their previous game, with May Taito being very active on defence and on the boards. A bit more practice and game experience will set them right for future games.

U17 A Boys: The boys kept it close but just missed out on a win, going down 45-42 to Western Springs. The boys were down a few key players, so it was a great effort.

U17 B Boys: Fell just short against Auckland Grammar 38-25.

CROSS COUNTRY

In beautiful conditions, Kimberley May won the title of North-West Champion for the Intermediate Girls grade in the first round of cross country for the season last week. She commanded the lead from get-go, and held on for the entire duration, showing incredible pace and sheer determination. This was a well-deserved win for Kimberley.

We also had some stellar performances from our Junior group, with Henry Greaves coming very close to a top-three spot, placing 4th overall for the Junior Boys group. Ayub Said was a wonderful surprise – a top-10 placer, running into 9th place overall for the Intermediate Boys group. This was particularly noteworthy given that Ayub is a natural running talent without a coach or the type of intensive training/opportunities that the other schools offer their distance running teams. Ayub has huge potential.

In the Senior Boys event, Liam Stolberger placed 10th overall in the gruelling 6km race; a wonderful result for our senior athlete who gives great mentoring to the younger boys in the team.

Finally, and very excitingly, our three-man relay team placed 5th overall behind Westlake, MAGS, Rangitoto, and Northcote. This is a superb result that the boys should be very proud of, and one they can definitely continue to build on over the cross country season.

1st XI Girls: Came up against St Cuthbert’s College on Monday night. The girls fought hard but ultimately went down 3-2. The Girls had a quick turnaround, playing on Wednesday against Diocesan.

Unfortunately, the girls fell short, losing 3-0.

2nd XI Girls: Opened their season with a 4-0 victory over Waitakere College. This was a great start to the season!

Junior Girls: Played against Saint Kentigern's on Wednesday night. The teams couldn’t be separated, with the game ending 0-0.

1st XI Boys: Had a 3-1 loss to Rangitoto on Saturday.

Year 9 Boys: Won 2-0 against Rutherford over the weekend.

Year 9/10 Boys: Went down 3-0 to Henderson.

3rd XI Boys: Continued their unbeaten start to the season, defeating Henderson 2-0.

HOCKEY

1st XI Boys: Mt Roskill are always a tough opponent, and there was no exception this week. They showed some real pace up front, that caught us out ten minutes in and we were down 1-0. We won a penalty corner soon after; Alex & Lewis worked a nice 1-2 to allow Hersh a controlled finish. 1-1, but a critical turnover near our circle gave Roskill possession, and they finished clinically. Then it was two goals by Avondale: a second for Lewis, and soon after, one to Alex. 3-2 up at the break. Second half was attack and counter attack, but both teams defended soundly. Our hearts were in our mouths as Roskill attacked with seconds to play. The shot went wide, but the whistle had blown for the end of the game.

2nd XI Boys: Defeated Auckland Grammar 4-2 on Wednesday night.

1st XI Girls: Faced Baradene on Thursday night. The girls gave it everything but came away second best, losing 2-0.

Junior Girls: Looked to bounce back from defeat last week, taking on Macleans at Avondale on Tuesday night. The girls kept it close but were edged out 2-1 when the final whistle blew.

Premier 1: Outplayed Hoani Waititi 28-14 to bounce back from last week’s loss. Lavinia Latu won Player of the Day. Premier 2: Were too strong for Lynfield, winning 42-22. Player of the Day was Ruta Rasmussen.

Senior Black: Narrowly defeated Waitakere College 22-20. Luca Chapman was Player of the Day. Senior White: Comfortably beat Henderson 30-10 in their match on Tuesday night. Keona Samuela showed her skills, winning Player of the Day. Senior Grey: Faced a tough Rutherford side, coming out second best, 17-12. Well done to Faith Tamatoa for getting Player of the Day. Year 9 Grey: Were far too good for Henderson, winning 22-9, with Eloise Marsh winning Player of the Day. Year 9 White: Started strongly and never looked back, beating Western Springs 25-5 on Saturday. Player of the Day went to Ella Pirihi.

Year 9 Black: Also took on Western Springs. In a much closer game, our girls came away with a hard-fought 26-18 win. Adriyel Latu won Player of the Day. Junior Premier: Came up against Waitakere, and were simply too good, winning 44-14. Idra Gill and LeOxeayn Maiu’u shared the Player of the Day award.

Year 10 Black: Faced off against Western Springs, with Grace Eade’s Player of the Day performance guiding them to a 29-12 win.

Year 10 White: Beat Green Bay 49-11 on Saturday. Fononga TupuFangalua was the Player of the Day. Year 10 Silver: Had a hard fought 17-13 win over Western Springs.

Player of the Day went to Elizabeth Cocker.

Year 10 Grey: Went down to Massey 25-16. Charlotte Duncan came away with Player of the Day.

U15: Were looking to back up last week’s big win when they took on Marcellin College on Saturday. Once again the boys came out firing, and won 36-0. They now sit tied for 1st place after the second round.

Girls: Our Girls 10s team had their opening game of the season on Monday night, taking on Marcellin College at Avondale. The girls proved too strong for their opposition, coming away with an impressive 47-7 win. We now shift our focus to Kelston, our next opposition.

SQUASH

Girls A: Made light work of Westlake Girls, winning 3-1.

Girls B: Shut out Westlake Girls, coming away with a 4-0 win.

Junior Boys: Travelled to Unitec to take on Orewa College. In a tight match, the teams couldn’t be separated, final score: 2-2.

Premier Boys: Went down 12-0 to Auckland Grammar.

Senior B Boys: Won by default against St Peter’s.

TABLE TENNIS

Avondale 1: Defeated Rutherford 7-4.

Avondale 2: Were narrowly beaten by Rutherford 6-5.

Avondale 3: Took out Kelston 8-3.

Avondale 4: Played very well against Rutherford, winning 10-1.

Avondale 5: Also dominated Rutherford, 11-0.

Avondale 6: Lost to Sunderland 7-4.

Avondale 7: Beat Rutherford 9-2.

Avondale 8: Came up short against Sunderland, 6-4.

RUGBY

1st XV: The team travelled to Manurewa to take on top-of-the-table Alfriston College. After moving from the Counties Manukau to the Auckland competition, Alfriston had made a strong start to the season with two comprehensive wins. The game started off all Alfriston's way, with them scoring two quick tries to take a 10-0 lead. Avondale sprung into action after the second try and begun to dominate large portions of play. Their efforts were rewarded when Flynn Cochrane crashed over from close range to narrow the deficit 10-5, where it remained going into half time. Avondale picked up where they left off in the second half, controlling the game but unable to convert the possession into points. With 10 minutes to go, Amanaki Malolo was rewarded for his hard work throughout the match with a try which was converted by Isimase Tavae to take a 12-10 lead. The final portion of play was tense and the score remained the same until a late penalty was awarded that was later converted by Isimase Tavae to give Avondale a 15-10 win. Some sore bodies will need to be recovered for next weekend’s match against Papakura College at Avondale 12pm!

2nd XV: Came up against rivals St Peter’s in what promised to be a good match. Our boys fought hard all game and came out on top, 17-10.

5B (U70kg): Played their first game of the season on Saturday, welcoming Botany Downs to our fields. This was a very close game, but ultimately we defeated them 14-12.

6B (U60kg): Had a loss on the weekend, losing 48-12 to Howick.

Avondale College invites nominations for the election of parent representatives to their Board of Trustees.

A nomination form and a notice calling for nominations have been posted to all eligible voters.

Additional nomination forms can be obtained from the School Office.

The voting roll is open for inspection at the school and can be viewed during normal school hours.

There will also be a list of candidates’ names, as they come to hand, for inspection at the school.

Nominations are invited for the election of six parent representatives.

Nominations close at noon on Friday 24 May 2019.

Voting closes at noon on Friday 7 June 2019.

TAUREWA CAMP Whether kayaking down a river, tramping in the Tongariro National Park or cooking a massive chocolate self-saucing pudding, Taurewa trips are an action-packed week full of highlights!

Taurewa is Avondale College's very own campsite in the central North Island, where students can spend time experiencing a variety of activities and challenges in the great outdoors.

Activities around camp include a low ropes course, a walk through the local stream, and the Fairy Falls walk where students have the opportunity to stand behind a waterfall. Other activities include kayaking at Tokaanu, walking the Taranaki Falls track in the Tongariro National Park and circumnavigating Lake Rotopounamu. For senior students, the overnight tramp is always a highlight!

All Year 10, Year 12, Year 13 and International students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp.

We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure.

Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to remind their parents when they know their camp is coming up!

TAUREWA ADULT HELPERS NEEDED!

with our students at our school camp, Taurewa, which is located beside the Tongariro National Park.

Adult helpers are vital to the success of our Taurewa Camps, and we are currently looking for some more volunteers for upcoming trips! A reasonable level of fitness is required but no experience in the activities is necessary.

Each camp is five days long and includes the following activities based around Tongariro National Park: • Year 10s: Kayaking, day tramps, hot pools, low ropes course and more!

• Year 12s: Mountain biking, rock climbing (indoors), overnight tramping, low ropes course and more!

• Year 13s: Overnight tramping, white water rafting, low ropes course and more!

All trip costs are covered and adults can hire any clothing or equipment from the Taurewa Office at no cost.

Adult helpers need to be over 21 years of age, and willing to complete a police check.
