MEET OUR PREFECTS

Monday's assembly was a very special one as the Avondale College prefects were introduced to the student body, and the Head Prefects announced. Congratulations to all who have been selected for this significant leadership role, and in particular our Head Prefects for 2020:

Head Boy: Dylan Chand Head Girl: Olivia Mallon Deputies: TJ Maunga, Tristan Mona, Christian Tivoli, Sophie Francis, Emily O'Callaghan and Fiona Wang.

Head Prefects Dylan Chand and Olivia Mallon with Mrs Watkinson

From the Principal

The role of prefect at our school is very significant. We are a large, busy, diverse school, with wide-reaching learning programmes, co-curricular activities and different events happening every day. To identify a team of 60 prefects who are able to offer leadership across all of those areas is quite a challenge. A prefect at Avondale College cannot just be a leader of their friend group or their sports team. A prefect at Avondale College cannot just be a leader of a single cultural group or regard leadership as something that they do between 8.55am and 3.15pm.

A prefect at Avondale College has to have the ability to lead across all year levels of students, and must also have the capability to relate well to the teachers and other adults who are part of our school community.

A prefect at Avondale College must be able to relate to students from the full range of cultural diversity and ethnic backgrounds, in a way that is inclusive, non-judgemental and respectful. Prefects at Avondale College embrace our HEART values, and exemplify them by their actions. That includes in the classroom, on the stage, on the sports field and out in our community. Their leadership is built on being responsible, hardworking and well-rounded members of our community, who honour our HEART values in the broadest sense of their meaning.

Many congratulations to all of the prefects who have been awarded their badges this week, and particularly to the eight Senior Prefects who, I am confident, will have the support of our wider College community over the year ahead.

Mrs L Watkinson Principal

75TH JUBILEE

[8-10 May 2020]

Avondale College is excited to announce that bookings for our 75th Jubilee are now open! The reunion weekend is packed with events for former students, staff, board members, and also our wider community!

Please, share the news with anyone you know will be interested!

13SCI Maori Bay / Muriwai Geology Trip

On Tuesday 18 February, two 13SCI classes went on a trip to Māori Bay at Muriwai to become geologists. Because rocks can't talk, geologists have to search for clues hidden within them to solve very complicated puzzles. The puzzle that students had to solve is how the formation of the Muriwai area was formed over the last 20 million years. Students identified pillow lavas in the cliff face, used geological principles and interpreted the fossils found. Now back in the classroom, the research continues as they try and put the pieces of the puzzle together.

WHĀNAU BBQ

Students, staff, friends and families enjoyed chatting in the sunshine at yesterday's Whānau BBQ. This was a great opportunity to spend time together in an informal setting and to meet many of our staff and Board of Trustees members over some great food.

"It was a great pleasure to welcome students and their families to our Whānau BBQ," said Principal Mrs Watkinson. "I look forward to meeting and speaking with more parents and caregivers at events, practices and fixtures over the coming months.”

SPORTS REPORT

Monday 17th February – Sunday 23rd February

CRICKET

The 1st XI Girls were looking to back up last week’s outstanding performance when they took on a mixed Rangitoto and Long Bay team. Bowling first, Avondale put on a great performance, bowling really well and backed up by some great fielding from the team. We held the opposition to 55/8. This was easily chased down by Avondale, reaching 56/1 in the 9th over, taking the 7 wicket win.

Our 1st XI Boys took on top-of-the-table Rangitoto on a wet Saturday morning. Bowling first, we managed to hold Rangitoto to just 146 runs in their 35 overs, thanks to great bowling from Shivang Patel (3/20) and Maanav Chezzar (2/15). Unfortunately, our batsmen couldn’t keep the run rate high enough as the Duckworth Lewis system took over and handed Rangitoto a 68 run win.

Junior cricket was washed out on the weekend. Our Junior B Boys managed to have a bat, with Dhruv Thrayeesh top scoring with 23, closely followed by opener Matthew Tegg with 20. Their opponents were unable to get their innings underway as the rain came down – and the match was abandoned.

SWIMMING

We had a number of Avondale College students competing at the Anthony Mosse Swimming Classic which was recently held at West Wave. Results as follows:

Jacob Laurence – 50m Backstroke Gold, 100m Backstroke Silver, 200m Freestyle Bronze, 100m Freestyle Bronze, 200m Backstroke Bronze

Alex Dunkley – 100m Butterfly Silver, 200m Butterfly SilverPaige Laurence – 200m Freestyle Silver

Well done to all our swimmers including Ingrid Longstaff, Olivia Stairmand and Jayden Collins.

TAG FOOTBALL

Year 10 student Le’Oxeayn Maiu’u was part of the Auckland Metro women’s team who won the National Open Women’s Tag competition at Bruce Pulman Park over the weekend. Le'Oxeayn was playing as the starting winger. She has been selected to be in the NZ Women’s Team for the Trans-Tasman competition in April. Well done, Le’Oxeayn on this achievement.

VOLLEYBALL

Our Senior Girls Volleyball team continued their top form on Thursday, winning both their games to make it 4 wins from 4 games so far. In their first game, the girls took on Onehunga, winning 25-12, 25-18. The second game started with a highly competitive first set going Avondale’s way 26-24, before a 25-16 second set win to make it 2-0.

WATER POLO

Friday night saw the first match of the season for our Senior Water Polo team. Many fresh faces took to the pool for the first time in Avondale colours. Many of the team had not played together before, and they took on Rosmini College, going down 10-5 in a match where the score line did not reflect how well we played. On Sunday, the team played again, taking on Western Springs. It was a great match for Avondale, with only 3 players not scoring goals in an 11-0 victory.
