B SCHOLARSHIP RESULTS The results of NZQA's 2019 New Zealand Scholarship exams have been announced and Avondale College students have gained 38 Scholarships, including six Outstanding, across 12 different subjects, as well as an Outstanding Scholar award!

Scholarship is New Zealand's most prestigious secondary school academic award. Particular congratulations go to Albert Wang (in Year 13 last year), who won an Outstanding Scholar Award, along with his six Scholarships, (including two Outstanding, in Physics and Chemistry).

Remarkably, nine of our 20 students awarded Scholarships were only in Year 12! Of these students, Heather Wallace achieved a Scholarship in four subjects; an impressive result.

More than 9,800 students across New Zealand sat Scholarship examinations last year, and 2,138 students were awarded one or more scholarships across the 35 subjects.

New Zealand Scholarship assesses students on their ability to demonstrate high-level critical thinking, abstraction and generalisation.

“New Zealand Scholarship is regarded as the most prestigious secondary school award in the country,” says NZQA Deputy Chief Executive Assessment, Kristine Kilkelly. “New Zealand Scholarship is designed to challenge the very best students and offers financial rewards for those going on to fulltime tertiary study in New Zealand. All Scholarship recipients deserve to be congratulated for their hard work and achievement.”

AVONDALE COLLEGE ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS THURSDAY 27 FEBRUARY The Avondale College Athletics Championships is taking place on Thursday 27 February from 9:00am at Mount Smart Stadium, Penrose.

This day is intended for students who qualified for events from last week's Whole School Athletics Sports Day. Names of students who have qualified are on the noticeboard outside the Sports Office. Permission letters can be collected from the Sports Office.

Track Event Sign up - At the Whole School Athletics Sports Day the only track event held was the 100m. Track events are now open for all students to sign up for. Students can do this in the Sports Office by Friday 14 February.

200m, 300m, 400m, 800m and 1500m and Javelin and triple Jump.

Buses will transport participants to Mt Smart from Avondale College at 8.15am. Students are to meet in the Halberg Gym at 8.00am. Students will race in their age groups on the day.

Parents are more than welcome to join us for the day.

No permission letters will be accepted on the day of the event.

MUSIC GROUPS

MUSIC LESSONS

Students at Avondale College are fortunate to have the opportunity to receive tuition in a wide range of instruments, free of charge.

Lessons are held in small groups, and are available in flute, clarinet, saxophone, oboe, bassoon, trumpet, trombone, French horn, tuba, violin, viola, cello, double bass, popular and jazz guitar, classical guitar, bass guitar, drums, percussion, vocals (singing) and keyboard. There are also a limited number of individual lessons available on piano and students who have already learnt piano may apply for jazz piano.

The teachers are paid by the Ministry of Education and Avondale College provides sheet music without charge. Avondale College has a number of instruments available for hire at less than commercial rates, but once these are all in use students must hire or buy their own instrument.

To find out more, students should go to the school intranet, Music Department page and click the Itinerant Music icon. The online form can be found there. Alternatively, you can fill out the blue form (available from the Music Department) and deliver the signed form to Dr Garner at the Music Department as soon as possible. Once lessons are full, students will have to go on waiting lists.

MUSIC CO-CURRICULAR GROUPS

Rehearsals for co-curricular music groups start in Week 3. Students who already play in a music group, or who would like to join one, should check out the rehearsal times listed in the Music Department or in the Co-Curricula section of the school Music page.

Groups include: Symphony Orchestra, String Ensembles, Taikaka Orchestra (all-comers orchestra), Big Bands, Jazz Combos, Soul Band, Gospel or Girls Choir, Vocal Ensemble, Rock Bands.

CO-CURRICULAR GOUPS UNDERWAY Students have been making the most of the co-curricular activities on offer, with hundreds signing up for groups, clubs and activities at the Join in @Avcol day, and at the sports sign up day this week. Many have also put their name down to learn an instrument, tuition for which is free under the Ministry of Education scheme (final day for applying is Friday). Many have also joined one of the 17 different cultural groups taking part in Polyfest in March, and rehearsals for this popular cultural festival are underway already! Our Sports Academy and Performing Arts Academy both began this week, with keen juniors making the most of the specialist tuition and training on offer by our teachers and coaches.

ABSENCES Parents/Caregivers must notify the College by 9.30am each day if their child is away. You can do this in several ways: a) Send a notification via Family Connection (preferred) • Log in to Family Connection • Select ‘Available E-Forms’ (at top left) • Click on Absence Notification • Fill out the details, save and submit.

You will receive a confirmatory email once the notification is approved. This replaces the need to supply an absence note to the home room teacher. b) Email the Attendance Officer: absences@avcol.school.nz. Please include your child’s full name, home room class and the reason for the absence. c) Phone the Absence Line: (09) 820 1071 Students are required to provide a written note for all absences, even after the school has been notified by phone. This note must be brought on the first day of attendance after the absence and given to the home room teacher.

Parents will receive a text from the school if their child is absent from home room without explanation.

Students must have a note from home if they are signing out of the College.

Avondale College picked up an outstanding 25 individual medals to go along with 5 relay medals at the Athletics Auckland Track and Field Championships. 1st XI Boys Cricket team

CRICKET

The 1st XI took on Howick College on Saturday. Batting first, Avondale put together a steady innings total of 174/10. Captain Nathan Powell put together a half century, scoring 57 runs off 69 balls. Kishan Patel also contributed well with 41 runs. In the second innings, Howick were able to chase down the total in 20 overs, resulting in an 8 wicket loss for Avondale.

ROWING

Year 13 students Leo Strode-Penny and Maceo Tremlett have been competing for their club over the past few weeks, and have achieved some great results. In the North Island Club Championships, Leo and Maceo placed 1st in the men’s intermediate double, 1st in the men’s intermediate quad, and 3rd in the men’s intermediate eight. These are some outstanding achievements and we wish Leo and Maceo well at the Head of Harbour regatta this weekend, competing for Avondale College.

VOLLEYBALL

It was a tough start for the Premier Boys Volleyball team on Friday night.

After securing their place in the Premier grade through invitation, the boys played hard against defending Auckland Champions De La Salle, but went down 3-0. They also took on Takapuna Grammar, which was also a 3-0 loss, however, each set was close, especially the 2nd set, in which Avondale were edged out by just 3 points. Good luck to the boys this Thursday as they kick off their Western Zone Grade, as well as for their home game at Avondale on Friday night against Orewa and local rivals Kelston Boys.

TAUREWA CAMP Whether rafting down a river, tramping in the Tongariro National Park or cooking a massive chocolate self-saucing pudding, Taurewa trips are an action-packed week full of highlights!

Taurewa is Avondale College's very own campsite in the central North Island, where students can spend time experiencing a variety of activities and challenges in the great outdoors.

Activities around camp include a low ropes course, a walk through the local stream and a burma trail. Other activities include walking the Taranaki Falls track in the Tongariro National Park and circumnavigating Lake Rotopounamu. For senior students, the overnight camp is always a highlight!

Year 13 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa in Term1 and Year 12's in Term 2.

Taurewa Camp is an optional camp offered as a co-curricular activity and has a substantial overnight component. Therefore, it is permitted under the Ministry of Education donation scheme to request a contribution from parents to assist with covering the cost of camp. Students who do not participate will continue with their usual programme of learning at school.

We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure.

Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to remind their parents when they know their camp is coming up!
