An Avondale College student has topped the world in her AS Cambridge International Mathematics exam! Joo-Yeon (Julie) Jeong, in Year 11, gained a perfect score in the exam to come first equal in the world! This is a particularly impressive achievement given that most students sit this exam in Year 12 - and Julie was still in Year 11! Also gaining top results in New Zealand were two other Avondale College students: Chak Fung (Justin) Lee who has gained a High Achievement Award in AS Joo-Yeon (Julie) Jeong Psychology, and Gloria Sun in A Level Mathematics. Last year more than 2 million students sat Cambridge International examinations in over 10,000 schools in countries including the United Kingdom, the United States, China, India and Singapore, as well as countries throughout Europe, South America and the Middle East. The outstanding achievements of our students will be recognised at an awards ceremony and formal dinner being held on 20 February at Eden Park.

Parents/Caregivers must notify the College by 9.30am each day if their child is away. You can do this in several ways: a) Send a notification via Family Connection (preferred) • Log in to Family Connection • Select ‘Available E-Forms’ (at top left) • Click on Absence Notification • Fill out the details, save and submit. You will receive a confirmatory email once the notification is approved. This replaces the need to supply an absence note to the home room teacher. b) Email the Attendance Officer: absences@avcol.school.nz. Please include your child’s full name, home room class and the reason for the absence. c) Phone the Absence Line: (09) 820 1071 Students are required to provide a written note for all absences, even after the school has been notified by phone. This note must be brought on the first day of attendance after the absence and given to the home room teacher. Parents will receive a text from the school if their child is absent from home room without explanation.
Students must have a note from home if they are signing out of the College.

MUSIC GROUPS
It was great to see so many students signing up for the wide range of activities on offer at the Join in @Avcol event yesterday! Forty-three different groups were represented - from Tai Chi to Spoken Word Poetry, Anime to Shakespeare - there was something to suit every interest! Students, keep an eye out for the sports sign up opportunities happening over the next few days...
MUSIC LESSONS
Students at Avondale College are fortunate to have the opportunity to receive tuition in a wide range of instruments, free of charge. Lessons are held in small groups, and are available in flute, clarinet, saxophone, oboe, bassoon, trumpet, trombone, French horn, tuba, violin, viola, cello, double bass, popular and jazz guitar, classical guitar, bass guitar, drums, percussion, vocals (singing) and keyboard. There are also a limited number of individual lessons available on piano and students who have already learnt piano may apply for jazz piano.
PREFECT CAMP The beautiful Hauraki Gulf was the backdrop for Prefect Camp this year. Students participated in a variety of leadership activities and engaged in team building over two full days of learning and discussion. They built towers, communicated while blindfolded and had a hilarious hour on the famous waterslide. Students enjoyed getting to know each other so that they can comfortably carry out their duties this year as Prefects. Counsellors, Deans, DPs and Principal Mrs Watkinson were also there to introduce, organise and spend time with the students. The camp provided an enjoyable and valuable experience outside of the normal school environment to get to know our leaders of 2020.
The teachers are paid by the Ministry of Education and Avondale College provides sheet music without charge. Avondale College has a number of instruments available for hire at less than commercial rates, but once these are all in use students must hire or buy their own instrument. To find out more, students should go to the school intranet, Music Department page and click the Itinerant Music icon. The online form can be found there. Alternatively, you can fill out the blue form (available from the Music Department) and deliver the signed form to Dr Garner at the Music Department as soon as possible. Once lessons are full, students will have to go on waiting lists.
MUSIC CO-CURRICULAR GROUPS
Rehearsals for co-curricular music groups start in Week 3. Students who already play in a music group, or who would like to join one, should check out the rehearsal times listed in the Music Department or in the Co-Curricula section of the school Music page. Groups include: Symphony Orchestra, String Ensembles, Taikaka Orchestra (all-comers orchestra), Big Bands, Jazz Combos, Soul Band, Gospel or Girls Choir, Vocal Ensemble, Rock Bands. ATHLETICS DAY Today's whole school Athletics Day was a great occasion as students ran, jumped, threw and three-legged-raced their way through the various activity stations. Great school spirit was shown by all year levels, and the Year 13's in their costumes provided much entertainment! As ever, the student/teacher relay was fiercely contested, with the top honours going to the staff this year! Those more serious athletes who qualified for different events will go on to compete in the Avondale College Athletics Championships at Mt Smart Stadium on 27 Feburary.

TAUREWA CAMP Whether rafting down a river, tramping in the Tongariro National Park or cooking a massive chocolate self-saucing pudding, Taurewa trips are an action-packed week full of highlights! Taurewa is Avondale College's very own campsite in the central North Island, where students can spend time experiencing a variety of activities and challenges in the great outdoors. Activities around camp include a low ropes course, a walk through the local stream and a burma trail. Other activities include walking the Taranaki Falls track in the Tongariro National Park and circumnavigating Lake Rotopounamu. For senior students, the overnight camp is always a highlight! Year 13 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp in Term 1. Taurewa Camp is an optional camp offered as a co-curricular activity and has a substantial overnight component. Therefore, it is permitted under the Ministry of Education donation scheme to request a contribution from parents to assist with covering the cost of camp. Students who do not participate will continue with their usual programme of learning at school. We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure.

The Avondale College Performing Arts Academy will commence Monday 10 February (Week 3, Day 6). The initial session starts in the Performing Arts Centre at 7:45 am.
