APPOINTMENT OF NEW PRINCIPAL The Avondale College Board of Trustees is delighted to announce that after a rigorous process overseen by specialist recruitment firm Sheffield over many months, the Board unanimously resolved to offer Lyndy Watkinson the position of Principal of Avondale College, commencing Term 1, 2020. Lyndy has been at Avondale College for over a decade. She has been a pivotal part of so many of the positive developments that have taken place in the school over recent years, and she is passionate about the teaching, learning and success of our students. We are delighted that Lyndy has accepted the position and we look forward to the continued positive development of Avondale College under her leadership in the years to come. PŌWHIRI WELCOMES MRS WATKINSON A very special pōwhiri took place in the Avondale College atrium yesterday, welcoming not just the new staff members to the College, but also recognising and celebrating the appointment of Mrs Watkinson to her new role as Principal of Avondale College. Led by Avondale College's Kaumātua Warahi Paki and his wife Linda, together with our Head of Māori, Ms Howell and members of our kapa haka group, speakers included Tinui Willing, Simon Matafai and Mark Carroll. Mrs Watkinson was presented with a korowai before sharing aspects of her own journey, which has included many years at Avondale College, most recently in the role of Deputy and Acting Principal. "It is no ‘accident’ that the students and staff of Avondale College are aspirational," she said. "Our motto Kohia Ngā Taikākā – To Seek the Heartwood, sets out that belief that we will always aim high, and be the very best that we can be, whether that’s in the classroom, on the stage, on the field or in the staffroom. Alongside that, our HEART values – Honesty, Endeavour, Atawhai, Respect and Tenacity, give us the cornerstones of what is important to us as a community, and it is those values that we hold dear, at the very best of times, and indeed at the worst." Mrs Watkinson concluded by thanking the Board of Trustees for giving her the opportunity to lead Avondale College into its next chapter. "And to the staff, students, my family and our wider community, thank you for walking alongside me."

WHOLE SCHOOL ATHLETICS DAY WEDNESDAY 5 FEBRUARY The Avondale College Athletics Day is a great day on the school calendar and offers all students a chance to participate. It also doubles as the first part of the Avondale College Athletics Championships. Athletes who throw or jump past the set standard will qualify for the Championship Athletics Day to be held on Thursday 27 February at Mt Smart Stadium. All students need to bring a packed lunch, water bottle and sunscreen. Junior students can come to school wearing their PE gear; Years 11 and 12 should wear PE uniform or black and white sporting gear. Should the day be postponed due to weather, an announcement will be posted on our school website www.avcol.school.nz.

ATAWHAI IN ACTION Avondale College's students, staff and wider community pulled together wonderfully to show atawhai in December, in raising funds to assist the Red Cross's work in Samoa amidst the devastating measles epidemic that has been occurring there. Thanks to the generosity of all who took part, the final total donated to the Red Cross was $1773.10. Thank you, Avcol community!

WELCOME 2020! Today our incoming cohort of Year 9 students were welcomed by Principal Mrs Watkinson, DP in charge of Year 9 Dr Brown, and Deans Mrs Yallop and Ms Alai at a special assembly in the theatre. Students were then directed to their home room classes where they spent the day getting to know each other and orienting themselves around the College. We also welcomed back our Year 13 students, and are looking forward to seeing our Year 10s, 11s and 12s at their assemblies tomorrow, as well as our Year 9s at their 9am Powhiri.

AVONDALE COLLEGE
SWIMMING GALA Wednesday 5 March
Students can register in the Sports Department for the Avondale College Swimming Gala held at the West Wave Aquatic Centre. Registrations are due by Friday 28 February. We will be holding competitive and noncompetitive races as well as our annual homeroom relays. Students who meet set standards for the competitive races will qualify to compete in the Central Western Zone Competition held on Monday 23 March. Cost: FREE
POP-UP GLOBE YOUTH THEATRE PRODUCTION AVCOL STUDENTS IN POP-UP GLOBE PRODUCTION Two Avondale College students will be taking to the stage this week in a special production All's Well That Ends Well, directed by Rita Stone. Zanique Eilers and Mikaela Millward, both in Year 13, went through a rigorous audition process to be accepted into the Pop-Up Globe Youth Theatre Company's production, which runs for four shows only from Tuesday 28 January. Come and support Zanique and Mikaela in this hilarious Shakespearean romantic comedy - tickets are available here:

U16-U18 INTERPROVINCIAL COMPETITION [ATHLETICS] Over Auckland Anniversary weekend, a strong Auckland team of 38 athletes, aged 14-17, headed down to Hamilton to compete at the annual U16-U18 Interprovincial Athletics Competition. There were teams from 6 different regions, Auckland, Counties, Waikato/BOP, Taranaki, Manawatu and Wellington and with approximately 150 athletes competing over the course of the day at Porritt Stadium. A good number of athletes came from Avondale College: • Le'Oxeayn Maiu'u (U16) • Lex Revell-Lewis (U16) • Kimberley May (U18) • Tremayne Redman-Gardner (U18) • Texas Beattie (U18) • Angelina Revell-Lewis (Auckland Team Official) They all did us proud and showed incredible maturity and sheer grit on the track and field events. The programme was incredibly tight, and all of them had to compete in 3 events plus a 1000m relay at the end. The individual results are yet to be published, however below are the relay results which all of our students were a part of. Auckland U18 Boys Relay won (Tremayne ran the 100m anchor, Texas ran the 200m leg) Auckland U16 Boys Relay won (Lex ran the 400m leg) Auckland U16 Girls Relay second (Le'Oxeayn ran the 400m leg) Lex Revell-Lewis came away with 3rd = in individual points for 15 boys group, with athletes from Wellington taking out the 1st, 2nd and other 3rd = spot. The competition was fierce and it was clear that the other regions brought their A-game to the meet. Athletics manager Judy Revell is extremely proud of the students that represented our school. 4

TAUREWA CAMP Whether rafting down a river, tramping in the Tongariro National Park or cooking a massive chocolate self-saucing pudding, Taurewa trips are an action-packed week full of highlights! Taurewa is Avondale College's very own campsite in the central North Island, where students can spend time experiencing a variety of activities and challenges in the great outdoors. Activities around camp include a low ropes course, a walk through the local stream and a burma trail. Other activities include walking the Taranaki Falls track in the Tongariro National Park and circumnavigating Lake Rotopounamu. For senior students, the overnight camp is always a highlight! Year 13 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp in Term 1. We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure.
