B SENIOR PRIZEGIVING Avondale College celebrated the achievements of our top senior students at the Senior Prizegiving on the evening of Thursday 2 November.

Students in both NCEA and CIE pathways were recognised for achieving in the top three of their subject areas; the College's top Special Awards were presented to our highest achieving students; and many thousands of dollars of scholarships were presented to students for their tertiary studies next year.

NZAMD SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS The NZAMD (New Zealand Academy of Modern Dance) Scholarship awards day was held on Saturday 28 October.

Five Avondale College students (Helena May, Sasha Matsumoto, Maija Wilson, Acacia Lee and Bella Brough) competed in the contemporary division. Helena, Sasha and Maija moved through to the finals on Saturday evening.

Helena May placed 5th, and Sasha Matusmoto 4th, in Contemporary Dance and were awarded with NZAMD monetary scholarships.

TRIALS

Friends and family were treated to five very special performances last night as our NZ Scholarship Drama candidates showcased the pieces they have prepared for their upcoming examination.

Each student performed a text-based monologue from a play as well a piece of their own devising that illustrated the influence of one of Stanislavsky, Brecht or Artaud. Our students did this extremely well, with their devised pieces touching on a complex range of themes such as the transition from childhood, the tension between teenagers and their parents, and the anxiety of stepping into an unknown future.

Their exam will also include an impromptu piece, with all work underpinned by oral submissions that explains context and justifies interpretive choices as well as performative intentions.

We wish them all the best for Thursday's exam!

SPORTS REPORT Monday 30th October to Sunday 5th November

VOLLEYBALL

It was a perfect day for both the Junior Girls Volleyball teams.

The Junior Girls A side defeated Waitakere College 1 and Rutherford College 1 in their games whilst the Junior Girls B picked up wins against Green Bay 1 and Lynfield College.

Junior Boys A lost 2-0 against Mt Albert Grammar but won against Waitakere College 2-1 in their second match of the day.

CRICKET

1st XI Boys vs Liston College match was called off due to rain.

The 2nd XI Boys made a great start to their match against Sacred Heart, batting till the end and scoring 170/4. However, as the rain set in, Sacred Heart were unable to bat, which resulted in a draw.

The Year 9 Boys match against Saint Kentigern White ended in a draw as it too was rained out during the second innings.

ATHLETICS

A fantastic group of ten athletes headed to Mt Smart Stadium on Saturday 4 November for their first ever Senior Meet and Secondary Schools Challenge. Up against other secondary schools in Auckland, the team from Avondale College were in full force and ready for some intense competition.

Some brilliant personal bests were achieved by the team.

The three girls in attendance had a very successful day. Faith Faumui was very busy at both track and field – covering 60m and 100m sprints, Long Jump, and Shot Put. Elli Morris, a relative new-comer to our Nationals team, also proved to be a force to be reckoned with, placing 2nd in U18 women's 100m and 3rd in the 60m. Joanna Poland battled to the end in her favoured 1500m event, holding off all her competitors with sheer grit and determination. She took out the last 50m in an impressive fashion, clocking up an incredible time of 4:45.05 to win the grade 14 girls group. Deja Rees powered her way to 1st place in the U18 women's Discus with 29.47m, and 2nd in the U18 women's Shot Put with 11.28m. All the girls came away with confidence and renewed energy for the next round of competition.

The boys in the team took the opportunity to compete after months of technical training. Events for them included the 60m with Lex Revell-Lewis placing 1st, and Joshua Saluni placing 2nd in the grade 13 boys group, and Lex placing 1st in the 100m sprints. The 400m sprint was contested by Lex Revell-Lewis who blew the competition out of the water with an impressive win, and Jaspar Hipkins who placed 3rd in the 400m – both boys achieving personal best times on the track. The focus for the sprint group was to clock up some good base times to gauge their explosive speed ahead of the National Champs in Hastings. The Long Jump boys group was covered by Kudz Honamombe, Joshua Saluni, Tremayne Redman-Gardner and Jaspar Hipkins, with Tremayne placing 3rd in the grade 14 boys group with a jump of 5.13m.

Lomanec Ianga (U16 mens group), covered the throws, placing first in Shot Put with 10.41m and placing 1st in Discus with 30.35m.

After round 1 of the Secondary Schools challenge, Avondale College has blasted well ahead of their competition with 765 points, and Mt Albert Grammar School in second place with 141 points. We expect that the other schools contesting the cup will soon pick up their game after viewing the points table – the Avondale College Nationals team are ready and looking forward to the challenge!

KILIKITI

The Junior Girls and Boys participated in the Auckland Secondary Schools Kilikiti tournament played at the Auckland Domain.

Both teams played extremely well through the course of the tournament. The Junior Girls placed second in their pool and defeated St Mary’s in the semi-final to book a spot in the final against Aorere College. An intense final saw the girls lose out by only two runs in the end, picking up silver medals. The junior boys placed 3rd in the Boys competition.

RUGBY 7’s

The U15 Boys 7’s team played in the Auckland Secondary Schools Rugby 7’s Tournament held at the Waitemata Rugby Football Club. First up, the boys played Pakuranga College in a close game. Both teams were very competitive as it reflected on the score line. The match ended in a 17-all draw. In the second match of the competition the boys found themselves in a similar situation, again drawing 19-19 against Papatoetoe High. The last game of the pool stages was against a tough De La Salle College side. The boys needed a win to progress further in the competition, but unfortunately a 29-17 loss saw the boys' tournament come to an end. It was a great tournament and a little unfortunate to not progress after only losing one game, but the boys put in a lot of hard work and came out with their heads held high.

SOFTBALL

The Junior Girls played a good first game together, showing that they have lots of potential to grow over the season.

Unfortunately they ended up losing to Waitakere College.

Outstanding leadership was shown by Rebecca Marsters-Kahui.

TOUCH

The Junior Boys lost by default to Middle School West and Green Bay. Our Junior Girls played against St Dominics in their first game of the day. It was a close game, but the girls edged out victors with a 7-5 win. In the second game the girls secured a comfortable win against Massey high 7-1.

TAUREWA CAMP 2017 Year 13, Year 12 and Year 10 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp. We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure.

Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to tell their parents early that their camps are coming up this year.
