B FAREWELL TO MR LEWIS
TERM 4 WEEK 9 11 December 2019
AVONDALE COLLEGE wishes all of our families a very happy Christmas and wonderful holiday season.
Avondale College would like to say a final farewell to our Principal, Brent Lewis, who retires this week after 42 years’ service to education, including 30 years as a Principal, and 19 years as Principal of Avondale College. The impact of his leadership during this time has been significant. Guided by a mission statement that states: in a caring and positive environment Avondale College will provide an education which enables all students to achieve personal standards of excellence in academic work as well in the supporting areas of physical, cultural and social development, he has worked tirelessly to achieve just that. Thank you, Mr Lewis, for all you have done for Avondale College, and its wider community. We wish you every happiness as you enjoy retirement and the adventures that this next phase will bring. TWO GOLDS AND A SILVER AT THE NZSS ATHLETICS NATIONALS
YEAR 9 BIG DAY IN Our Year 9 students had a great time at this year’s Big Day In on Thursday! There was tough competition between all homerooms, from the fashion catwalk right through to the relays and tug-of-war battles. A huge congratulations to all students for competing with tenacity and determination. Well done to the overall winners, 9WLG who came out on top with 9CHY close behind! 9WLG won the tallest tower and came second in the tug-of-war, 9CHY won the relay and came second in the wearable arts competition. 9WLG came out on top in the tie-breaker student-only tug-of-war! Thanks to all staff who took part, and especially to our Year 9 Deans, Miss Earwaker and Mr Smit for organising such a fun day in.
Avondale College's top athletes gained some outstanding results at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Athletics Championships in Wellington last weekend! Lex Revell-Lewis - Gold medal U16 Boys 400m (51.57s) in cold, wet and windy conditions. Tremayne Redman-Gardner - Silver medal U18 Boys HJ (1.99m) - with the winner clearing 2.02m. Senior Mixed 4x400m - Gold medal. 3:53.08min. Tremayne Redman-Gardner, Kimberley May, Joanna Poland and Lex RevellLewis. Joanna Poland placed 4th in her Senior Girls 1500m, and the Junior Mixed 4x400m relay placed 4th as well. Many thanks to staff members Judy Revell, Dave Dewsnap and Roz Butler for their smooth organisation of such a busy weekend in wet and windy conditions.
FUNDRAISING FOR SAMOA Avondale College's staff, students and community pulled together wonderfully to show atawhai on Friday, in raising funds to assist the Red Cross's work in Samoa amidst the devastating measles epidemic that is occurring there. Students enjoyed an open air concert and a sausage sizzle at lunchtime, and thanks to the generosity of our Avondale College community, just under $2000 was raised. We would also like to thank Pak n'Save Mt Albert for donating the sausages, and to Mitre 10 Mega, New Lynn, for the use of their portable barbeque.
