Our Year 13 graduates marked the end of their time at Avondale College with a very special evening last night, held at the Ellerslie Racecourse. Students and staff enjoyed a superb dinner before the dancing the night away. It was the most perfect evening to celebrate the achievement and hard work of our students throughout all their years at Avondale College. Year 13 Dean, Mrs Yallop, said that this had been a very special group of students. "Our Year 13s have been such an amazing year group and it has been with great pleasure that I have watched them grow over the past two years. They are an extremely talented group and I am very excited about what their future holds. I am so proud of them all and wish them the very best." Avondale College would like to wish all of our graduating students well as they launch into the next phase of their lives beyond secondary education. We will follow their progress with great interest in the years to come!

INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITY PROGRAMME A month long, action-packed activity programme has given our senior International students the chance to learn new skills and explore some of wonderful sights and sounds that are on offer here in New Zealand, before they head back to their home countries at the end of term. The programme included many trips out of school, where students went windsurfing and paddleboarding, whale and dolphin watching, mountain biking, sailing, kayaking and even zip lining on Waiheke Island! Students also enjoyed their specialist classes here at Avondale College, where they tackled a business challenge, made their own short film, cooked up a storm in the cooking classes, and took part in craft classes, ICT classes, dance, drama and more. We are sad to now farewell these wonderful students as they return home over the next week or so - we know they will have made friends here that will last a lifetime! Ka kite ano - see you again!

SPORTS REPORT Monday 25th November – Sunday 1st December
Avondale College wishes the best of luck to our 18 athletes heading down to Wellington to compete in the NZSS Track, Field and Road Race Championships. We look forward to hearing how you all did when you get back on Monday!
Our Junior Badminton players took on schools from all over New Zealand in the NZSS Junior Badminton Championships this week, held at North Harbour Badminton Centre. Both teams played very well, with the boys finishing 8th in New Zealand, and the girls finishing 2nd in New Zealand. The last game for the girls was against Westlake Girls, where the winner would win the tournament, however, Avondale were just edged out on countback to take the silver medals; a great achievement nonetheless!
Our 1st XI Boys had their last game of 2019 on Saturday, where they took on Selwyn College. Batting first, Selwyn put together a total of 223 for the Avondale batsmen to chase. Our openers struggled; however, Josh De Zoysa, Tinle Sherpa and Dylan King steadied the run chase, scoring 21, 44, and 56 runs respectively. The game came down to the very last over, but Avondale were 14 runs short when the final ball had been bowled. Well done to our Year 13s on the team who have played their last cricket match for Avondale College. In the last match for 2019, our Year 10 boys had a great win over Auckland Grammar. Nathan Ellis’ 41 runs helped to get Avondale to a total of 108/4, which backed up his impressive bowling display, taking four wickets. This was a great way to finish the season for the team and we look forward to Term 1 in 2020.
It was an exciting weekend for our Girls’ Rugby 7s team, who participated in the New Zealand Condor 7s Open competition. After receiving an invite due to another school pulling out, our girls jumped at the opportunity to play on the big stage. The girls played six games across the weekend, and won three, winning the Consolation Bowl, meaning we finished 13th out of 24 teams. The girls’ wins included a 35-0 win over Southland Girls’ High School, a 31-5 win over Queen Margaret College, and a 19-5 win over Waikato Diocesan. Well done to Le’Oxeayn Maiu’u, who was named in the Condor Team of the Tournament; an especially impressive achievement considering she is only in Year 9 and this was the Open Girls tournament!
Le'Oxeayn Maiu'u has been selected into the New Zealand Secondary Schools Senior Girls Condors 7s Rugby Team
JUNIOR SCHOOL BASKETBALL COMPETITION The Sports Department have been running a fun junior school basketball tournament at lunchtimes over the past few weeks. The competition between classes has been fierce as each Home Room has showed their skills and sportsmanship on the court, battling it out to see who would be named the winner! Rising to the top and winning the junior school title and the glory was 10GTH! Their next task was to take on the staff in a highly anticipated game that was played in the stadium yesterday. The gym was packed to capacity with the crowd filling not only the bleachers but also courtside, and the action didn't disappoint. Both teams played hard and fair, as the scores stayed close. Crowd favourite, Mr Boardman provided the staff with a boost with his strong rebounding and effort throughout the match, while big shots from Ms Barron, Mr Davis and Mr Hita got the crowd off their feet! However as the game went on, 10GTH (a team full of Basketball Academy players) began to pull away, and the juniors ended up winning the game, 37-29!
