B LITERACY AWARDS On Tuesday, the English Department celebrated tenacity in literacy with our annual Literacy Awards, held in the school library. Parents, students and English teachers gathered to celebrate Year 9 and 10 English and Media Studies students who have shown perseverance and determination in improving their own reading and writing throughout the year. It was a special evening, and a real celebration of the individual students, their families and their English teachers, and the learning journey we all go on together. CAREERS TRIPS MAORI & PASIFIKA YEAR 10 STUDENTS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF AUCKLAND – BEAMS DAY
On Wednesday 29 November ten Year 10 Maori and Pasifika students attended the BEAMS Day at the University of Auckland. Science and Maths teachers were asked to recommend students who showed specific interest and aptitude in their subjects and the students spent the day participating in a series of activities and workshops in Business, Engineering, Architecture, Medicine and Science to learn about study towards careers in these fields. The students found the day very informative and fun. As well as meeting students from different schools, they also met some great role models who acted as ambassadors for the different faculties at the University. The ambassadors were students who were studying towards, or who had just completed, their degree one of the BEAMS areas.

MASSEY UNIVERSITY YEAR 10 TASTER DAY
On Wednesday 20 November, ten Year 10 students visited Massey University, Albany Campus to take part in the Year 10 Taster Day. Students chose two workshops from the areas of Business, Science, Health and Humanities and Social Science. The workshops were designed to engage the students and to give them insight into potential school subjects and future pathways.

On Friday 1 November eight of our Year 10 Maori students had the opportunity to attend the Year 10 KATTI Programme at Te Noho Kotahitanga Marae on the Unitec, Mt Albert Campus. The students sent the day mixing with students from 14 other schools around Auckland, while attending workshops which were designed to inspire them to dream and know that obstacles can be overcome, especially as they have support.

BADMINTON
Good luck to our Junior Boys and Girls Badminton teams competing in the NZSS Junior Championships on the North Shore. The boys’ team consists of Brendan Choong, Wiatt Siow, Ganesh Digamarthi and Arnav Bhagat. The girls’ team includes Yee Xuan Ng, Lina Imai, Alyssa Chia, and Misha Lingampalli.
CRICKET
The 1st XI Boys took on Pakuranga College. Batting first, our boys made a total of 116 runs. Josh De Zoysa top scored for the team with 19. In the second innings, our bowlers took some great wickets, but ultimately a few dropped catches and some mistakes allowed Pakuranga to chase down our total with 2 wickets to spare.
1st XI Cricket team
It was an amazing day on the cricket field for our Year 9 Boys. They travelled to Westlake Boys to play their semi-final. Batting first, openers Mohit Kandpal and Fin Perry had an 81 run partnership. Mohit went on to hit the Westlake bowlers for 92 in an incredible batting display. Kieran Alker hit a quick-fire 58 not out to close the innings, scoring 214 runs and losing just two tickets. In the Westlake run chase, our bowlers were outstanding. Vivek Dodi took 3 wickets for 5 runs, whilst brothers Luke and Ryan Smardon took 4 for 9, and 2 for 5 respectively. Westlake were bowled out for 64 runs, therefore Avondale taking the win by 150 runs. Our Year 10’s took on Takapuna Grammar on Saturday. In the opening innings, Avondale batted and scored 96/6 in their 20 overs. In the run chase, the Takapuna batsmen had a great day, and chased down the target in the 12th over, winning the game by 8 wickets.

VOLLEYBALL
Avondale College took two Junior Volleyball teams to the AKSS Junior Championships that spanned across Thursday, Friday and Saturday. We had one Year 10 team, managed by Ms Alai, and one Year 9 team managed by Miss Schmidt. Our Year 10’s are a very quiet but determined group of girls. Throughout the tournament, every player grew in confidence. Their most improved player was Angela Pasia, who has given 100% at trainings and games this season. Overall, our Year 10’s won 4 out of their 8 games, which included a 2-0 win over Orewa. Our Year 9’s had a great tournament, and won 4 games out of their 9 played. Their tournament included some awesome wins, notably against Diocesan and Elim. Overall, it was a successful tournament for both teams, and the girls are looking forward to next year.
WATER POLO
It was a great week for our Junior Waterpolo team. The team has had a tough season, entering the two weekend games without getting a win. This was the last round of Waterpolo for the year, so the players were keen to get a win. They did just that, defeating Glendowie 9-5 thanks to a handful of goals from Fin Perry. The team then faced off with Kings’ College on Sunday. The game ended in a thrilling 5-5 draw, however, Avondale won by default, due to a technicality. Overall, it was a tough season for the team but they no doubt enjoyed representing Avondale College in the pool.

ALUMNI: NATASHA VAN TILBURG Natasha van Tilburg is the latest of our Avcol alumni to make waves on the national cricket sene! The young cricketer, who plays for the Auckland Hearts, has been awarded one of eight New Zealand Cricket Women’s Development Contracts for the 2019-20 season. These contracts allow NZC High Performance coaches to work with the next generation of female cricketers and learn more about their all-round abilities and future potential. NZC GM High Performance Bryan Stronach said the ability to grow and develop talent is crucial to the High Performance programme and goes a long way to ensuring long-term success at the top level. “This particular lot of contracts are for players we have identified as having talent we want to work with and discover more about,” said Stronach. Natasha will receive financial support and will be required to attend extra camps with access to additional support in delivering their performance plans. In the meantime, we wish her all the best as the Auckand Hearts take on the Canterbury magicians at Eden Park this Saturday!
