Avondale College's Atrium was transformed into a very special event space last night as staff, the Board of Trustees and special invited guests from past and present paid tribute to Mr Brent Lewis, who is retiring after 19 years as Princpal of Avondale College, and 42 years service to education. In honouring Mr Lewis, the evening combined many of the elements that make Avondale College so special, with performances by our Premiere String Ensemble, Gospel Choir and Jazz Quartet, and heartfelt presentations made by representatives of our MÄ ori and Pasifika communities. Guest speakers touched on the many and varied ways that Mr Lewis has made invaluable contributions to the life of the school, its physical buildings, its students and its communities during his 19 years at the helm. Another highlight of the evening was a video compilation of messages from many of the Head Boys and Head Girls who shared their memories of Mr Lewis during their time at Avondale College. The Board of Trustees presented Mr Lewis with a beautiful piece of art glass; a taonga that had been mounted on a piece of wood that had been set aside from the rebuilding of the 'old school'. In his speech to the assembled guests, Mr Lewis spoke of the significant things that had shaped his time here; the people, the staff and the students. He also shared some of the poignant moments and, hilariously, some of the funny ones. As his speech concluded, Head Boy Kiahan Simons-Tipau led a rousing haka, joined by members of our kapahaka group, prefects and 1st XV. The evening was one which honoured and celebrated the contribution that Mr Lewis has made to the College, and we wish him well as he prepares for retirement at the end of the year. RHODES SCHOLARSHIP FOR KDEE Avondale College is celebrating the news that former student, KDee Ma'ia'i has been awarded a prestigious Rhodes Scholarship to study at Oxford University next year! Currently studying at Auckland University, KDee is the first Pasifika student to receive this award. Rhodes Scholarships are awarded annually to 95 exceptional students from 64 countries. They cover up to three years of fees and accommodations for postgraduate study. KDee is one of three Kiwi recipients who will head to the UK next September. At Oxford, she'll complete a DPhil (the Oxford term for a PhD) in International Development, focussing on how Pacific people respond to the ways in which New Zealand and Australia, America and China create foreign policy toward the Pacific Rhodes Scholar KDee Ma'ia'i (right) with NZ Governor Islands. PERFORMING ARTS SHOWCASE Held in the theatre on Thursday evening, the Performing Arts Academy Showcase was a wonderful evening of dance, drama, jazz and classical music. Junior students in each of our four Academy strands took to the stage to present items that they have been preparing and polishing throughout the year. The evening opened in style with an accomplished performance from our Jazz Academy students, who played Bir Mir Bish Du Schon (composed by Secunda, Jacobs, Chan and Chaplin), Barbados, by Paul Lee, Do Nothing til You Hear From Me, arranged by Dave Wope, and Zoot Suit Riot, arranged by Michael Sweeney. Dance Academy students gave performances in a variety of styles, including jazz, hip hop and contemporary, and showcased the talents of a number of emerging young choreographers and performers. The Classical Academy students performed an impressive set of pieces which included Igue by Hohann S Back, Aria from Orpehus by Christoph W Gluck and Beethoven's Joyful Reunion of Peasants. The Drama Academy students presented a lively and engaging devised piece that combined an audition for Britain's Got Talent (complete with Ant, Deck and Simon Cowell), with a performance of Roald Dahl's Revolting Rhymes' Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. Congratulations to all our young performers on putting on such a polished and high quality showcase, and particular thanks to the teachers who have worked tirelessly in early morning sessions throughout the year: Mr Robinson (TIC and Head of Jazz Music), Mr Stenbo (Classical Academy), Dance teachers Miss Southgate and Miss Schmidt, and Drama teacher Miss Tuiletufuga. The future of the Performing Arts is looking bright at Avondale College!
75TH JUBILEE 8-10 MAY 2020 In 2020 Avondale College will be 75 years old! A Jubilee weekend celebration will be held at the College, from 8-10 May, for all former students, staff and BOT members. Programme and registration details will be listed on the College website early in 2020, but in the meantime, please spread the word to all who might be interested! SPORTS REPORT Monday 11th November – Sunday 17th November CRICKET Our 1st XI Boys had a tough outing against Pakuranga College. Avondale batted first and scored 92 runs. Top run scorer was Mihir Patil, scoring 22, closely followed by Nathan Powell on 21. The run chase by Pakuranga lasted just 18 overs, as they reached Avondale’s 92 with 9 wickets to spare to win the game. It was a much better Saturday for our Year 10 cricketers. Taking on St Peter’s, we batted first and reached 126/5 after 20 overs. In St Peter’s run chase, it came down to the last over, but our bowlers pushed through and allowed only 117 runs, winning the game by 9 runs.
VOLLEYBALL On Thursday, our Year 9A Volleyball team went into their two games undefeated. Their first game came against St Dominic’s, where they cruised through winning 2-0. The second game was against Waitakere, who were the next best team in the competition. A slow start saw the girls fall 1-0 down. They battled back to win closely in the 2nd, to tie it at 1-1. In the deciding set the girls were narrowly defeated to lose the game 2-1. That was the girls only loss of the season, and they finish 1st overall on the table. Well done to these girls for such an awesome season. Our Year 9B Girls finished their season on a high, defeating St Dominic’s 2-0. It was a steady season for the girls, with some great wins and some tough losses. A couple of girls have been called into the A team for the AKSS Championships this week. Congratulations to Savannah Va’a and Charlotte Tuatagaloa on being selected for this team! The Year 10 Girls finished 8th in their grade after a loss to Mt Albert in the final game of the season. Good luck to the girls competing at Auckland Championships this week. WATER POLO A tough night for our Junior Waterpolo team, who went down 7-4 to Howick College on Friday night. Their season wraps up this Sunday and the team will be looking for their first win of the season.
YOUNG SPORTSPERSON OF THE YEAR AWARDS 2019 On Thursday night, the annual College Sport Young Sportsperson of the Year (YSPOTY) Awards were held at Eden Park. Avondale College was well represented, with three athletes named as finalists. Grace Nweke was a finalist for Netball, Liam Stolberger for Orienteering, and Angelina Revell-Lewis for Student Official. We are delighted to announce that both Grace and Angelina were winners of their respective categories! Grace was also nominated at one of the eight finalists for the overall Sportsperson of the Year Award, which was announced on the night, however was pipped by an international hockey player from another school. Well done to all our athletes that were nominated and, of course, to our winners, Grace and Angelina.

TAUREWA CAMP Camp Hireage Looking for a holiday destination? Why not hire our Taurewa camp facility? There are 16 individual huts, sleeping a total of 53 - with room to pitch your tent. A fully equipped kitchen and a four bedroom cottage (sleeps seven) is also available. We still have a few weeks available for bookings in January and February. Register your interest today: taurewa@avcol.school.nz Be an Adult Helper in 2020 We would like to draw your attention to an exciting opportunity to work with our students at our school camp, Taurewa, which is located beside the Tongariro National Park. Adult helpers are vital to the success of our Taurewa Camps, and we are currently looking for volunteers for upcoming trips next year! A reasonable level of fitness is required but no experience in the activities is necessary. Each camp is five days long and includes the following activities based around Tongariro National Park: • Year 10s: Kayaking, day tramps, hot pools, low ropes course and more! • Internationals: Overnight tramping, caving, skiing and more!
