B SPORT WAITAKERE EXCELLENCE AWARDS Avondale College was well represented at the Sport Waitakere Excellence Awards last Friday night at the Trusts Stadium, with a number of past and present students winning awards. Our Premier Netball team topped off their stellar year by winning the Secondary School Team of the Year award, and netballer Grace Nweke added yet another award to her already impressive tally this year, winning the prestigious Secondary School Sportsperson of the Year. Grace was also a member of the Waitakere U17 Netball Representative Team that won L-R: Grace Nweke, Lavinia Latu & Brianna Folomae the Team of the Year award! Three former students also won awards: Weightlifter Kanah Andrews-Nahu won the Junior Sportswoman of the Year, surf life saver Lucy Makaea the Pacific Island Achievement Award, and Luisa Avaiki the Coach of the Year Award and the Trusts Supreme Award for her involvement with the Vodafone Warriors. We were also proud of our students and alumni who received nominations for awards: Angelina Revell-Lewis for Official of the Year (Athletics), Misha Lingampalli for Sportsperson of the Year (Badminton), Sian Hancy for Sportsperson of the Year (Weightlifting), and alumni Ajaz Patel and Jeet Raval who were both nominated for Sportsman of the Year (Cricket).
YOUNG ENTERPRISE AWARD Two Avondale College teams participated in the Young Enterprise Scheme this year, with one team, Takky Limited, winning a West Auckland regional award for showing strong determination in developing their project despite obstacles that kept getting in their way! The team was well led by Simran Tak, who was also awarded the EY Individual of the Year for West Auckland; the top individual prize in the competition! This was just reward for reward leadership, hard work and determination. It is an outstanding achievement for Avondale College and the L-R: Merlin Babu, Simran Tak and Tristan Mona Commerce Department.

SCHOOL DONATION & TAIKAKA The culmination of a year's hard work by students in our Performing Arts Academy will be on display in the Showcase being held in the Avondale College theatre on Thursday evening. The evening will feature performances from our four Academy strands of Jazz, Classical music, Dance and Drama - don't miss it!
ALUMNI: LES MISERABLES! Two former Avondale College students are starring in the Auckland Music Theatre and Amici Trust's production of Les Miserables, which opened to rave reviews last week! Playing the lead role of Javert, is Hayden Tee, who is well known internationally for his performances on Broadway and London's West End. Joining him on stage, in the chorus, is Katherine Cornish, who is the daughter of our receptionist (and fabulous singer in her own right), Trish Cornish. The production runs at the Civic till the end of November.

SPORTS REPORT Monday 4th November – Sunday 10th November
CRICKET
Our 1st XI Girls' winning streak continues! The girls batted first against Northcote College at home, with Avondale College scoring 114 runs in 20 overs. After a slow start, the girls built some good partnerships to steady the innings and set a competitive target score. In the second innings, some spectacular catches and run outs in the field by Avondale College set the match up for a thrilling finish. In the last over, Northcote College fell short of the target with a total score of 103 runs; Avondale College winning by 11 runs. The 1st XI Boys took on Rangitoto College on Saturday. Bowling first, there were some good patches of play, with Tinle Sherpa taking four wickets, and Avondale bowling out the visitors for 168 runs after 44 overs. Tinle backed up his strong bowling performance with the bat, being our top run scorer, scoring 42. The run chase was cut short, however, at 42 overs, where Avondale were bowled out for 123, losing by 45 runs. The team play Macleans on Saturday. It was a great game on Saturday for our Year 9 Boys, who took on Sacred Heart. The opposition batted first, and were quickly a couple of wickets down, with Vivek Doddi striking twice early on to slow down Sacred Heart’s run rate significantly. Avondale held the visitors to 1828 in the opening innings. In the run chase, Avondale got off to a flying start, with opening batsmen Mohit Kandpal and Fin Perry having a great opening partnership, which included 52 runs from Mohit in a half-century performance. Towards the end of the innings, Ryan Smardon hit 24 runs and finished the match not out, as Avondale won the game by 6 wickets, after chasing down the total set by the opposition in just 37 overs.
DISTANCE RUNNING
On Saturday, the Dick Quax Memorial meet and the Athletics Auckland Distance Championships were held at the Yvette Williams track in Pakuranga. Avondale had two Year 9 students representing their clubs, Wiremu Ngamotu for Lynndale, and Aphra Balducci for Oratia. Wiremu achieved a silver medal in the 3000m Grade 13 Boys event, with a time of 10:15.23min. Aphra also did very well, winning a bronze medal in the 3000m Grade 12 Girls event, with a time of 13:06.92min. Well done to our distance runners on these awesome results.

This is a huge win for our netball programme, and caps off a great year for the team. Congratulations too all the players, coaches and managers, and of course to Grace for taking out the individual award. Good luck to all our athletes on Thursday night who will be attending the College Sport Young Sportsperson of the Year Awards. We look forward to what we hope will be a successful evening for the school.
VOLLEYBALL
Thursday night was another successful one for our Year 9A Girls team. They took on St Dominics in a top of the table clash to determine the playoff seeding for next week. The team began strongly, taking out the first set 25-20. The second set proved to be another good test for our girls but they were up to the challenge, winning 25-17 to win the game 2-0. The team have qualified 1st overall and will be looking to win the competition in next week’s games. The Year 9B Girls also had a strong night, bouncing back from some tough results the week before. The girls firstly came up against Henderson, where they won a close first set, 25-19. The second set was not as close, as Avondale pulled away and won 25-13, to win the match 2-0. In high spirits, the team then faced rivals Mt Albert Grammar. Their momentum from the previous game seemed to play a part, as they breezed through both sets to win 2-0, to make it two wins from two this week. Heading into the final round, the girls have a great chance of placing in the top 3 of the competition. Our Year 10A Girls had a tough outing on Thursday, losing 2-0 to both Kelston Girls, and Auckland Girls Grammar. Currently, the team sit mid-table in their competition, with a similar amount of wins and losses. The Junior Boys team won both of their games on Thursday. They firstly took on Mt Albert Grammar, defeating them 2-1. Then, came a match against Auckland Grammar, who were one spot above them on the table. The boys carried over their success from the first game and managed to come out on top again, 2-1 over Auckland Grammar. Well done to the boys on a successful evening of Volleyball.
WATERPOLO
Our Junior Mixed Waterpolo team came up against Lynfield College on Friday night. It was a close match, and only one point separated the sides at full-time, however, it was Lynfield taking the win, 6-5. The team played again on Sunday, and took on Rutherford College. Avondale played well but came up short, losing 11-5.

Adult helpers are vital to the success of our Taurewa Camps, and we are currently looking for volunteers for upcoming trips next year! A reasonable level of fitness is required but no experience in the activities is necessary. Each camp is five days long and includes the following activities based around Tongariro National Park: • Year 10s: Kayaking, day tramps, hot pools, low ropes course and more! • Internationals: Overnight tramping, caving, skiing and more!
