B SENIOR PRIZEGIVING The hard work and academic success of our senior students was recognised at Senior Prizegiving on Thursday last week. Book prizes were awarded to students who had placed in the top three of their subject across their individual year levels. The College's Special and Memorial Awards were presented to well-deserving recipients, and more than $300,000 worth of scholarships to tertiary insitutions were also awarded. One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of the inaugural Brent Lewis HEART Award. This special award was commissioned by Mr Lewis, who retires this month after 19 years as Principal at Avondale College, and recognises a student who has lived and led the HEART values of Avondale College. The award was presented to Tasfia Mahmood. Receiving the Board of Trustees Staff Travel Study Award this year was Senior Manager, Mr Jamie Smith. In a first for Avondale College, this year the top academic honours were awarded to two students in both the NCEA and Cambridge International pathways. These students' perfect scores in their subjects meant that Dux medals were presented to all four. Congratulations to Nilotri Das and Cate McIntosh (NCEA) and Shivam Desai and Albert Wang (CAIE) on their achievements! (For a full list of recipients, please see page 6.)

SUCCESS AT SHOWDOWN AWARDS! The red carpet was quite literally rolled out for our students and staff who attended the Auckland Live Showdown Awards at the Bruce Mason Theatre on Friday night! Avondale College's production of In the Heights had received a record sixteen nominations in the musical category, and amidst a very high quality pool of talent from other Auckland secondary schools, we were delighted to win six awards - including the very prestigious award for Best Musical! Also receiving awards were Kiahan Simons-Tipau (Best Male in a Lead Role), Myah Eketone (Best Female Soloist), Steven Tuitama-Muaiava (Best Male in a Minor Role), Ms Santana Schmidt and team (Best Choreographer), and Mrs Susan Elijas and team (Best Set Design). It was a superb evening which celebrated excellence in the performing arts, and our Avcol group left feeling proud to be part of such a flourishing arts scene.

HINDI SPEECH COMPETITION Hindi Language Week celebrations for 2019 included many activities and events being organised by the Hindi Language and Culture Trust of New Zealand, together with Teach Hindi NZ from Monday 21 October to Friday 25 October. Three keen participants from Avondale College (Roshni Oberoi, Anoushka Annie Patel and Ridhi Arora) took part in the Secondary Schools division of the National Hindi Speech Competition (Auckland region). Ridhi's topic was: 'Why is it important to deal with global warming,' while Roshni and Annie chose to discuss 'What does our Indian culture teach us'. All of our participants spoke well in Hindi and the competition standard was extremely high. Congratulations to Roshni who placed 3rd in the Secondary Schools category; a fantastic achievement!

SPORTS REPORT Tuesday 29th October – Sunday 3rd November
CRICKET
The Girls Cricket team were put into bat first playing away at Lynfield College last Wednesday. At the completion of 20 overs, Avondale College scored 102 runs. Top run scorers Shahana Samadi and Hetanshi Chauhan had a great partnership. Radhika Shah also had a good performance with the bat towards the end of the innings. In the second innings, Shahana Samadi continued her great run from the first match by getting a wicket in the very first over again to bowl a wicket maiden! After 20 overs, Lynfield College scored 80 runs, therefore falling short of the target and Avondale College winning by 22 runs! Player of the match Shahana Samadi was the top run scorer and she also took four wickets. Our three cricket teams all had losses over the weekend. The 1st XI Boys went down to Sacred Heart, whilst our Year 9 Boys lost against Auckland Grammar. Our Year 10 Boys also took on Auckland Grammar, and put up a good fight but lost the game by 31 runs.
NZ NETBALL AWARDS The New Zealand Netball Awards Evening was held on Wednesday 30th October at Spark Arena. Our very own Grace Nweke was named as the Secondary Schools Player of the Year for 2019. This caps off what has been an outstanding year for Grace and we congratulate her for all her achievements to date!

VOLLEYBALL
Our Year 9A Girls remain undefeated and top of the table after another two wins on Thursday. The girls firstly came up against Massey High School, who they were anticipating a tough game against. The girls dug deep and outclassed their opponents 2-0 (2511, 25-8) to take the win. Their next opponents were to be Mount Albert Grammar, who defaulted the game, giving us the win. The Year 9B Girls went down to Waitakere College B, 2-0 on Thursday. They also took on Rutherford College in a local derby, and managed to push the game to a final set, but were edged out in the 3rd, losing the game 2-1. It was a difficult night for our Year 10A Girls, who firstly came up against Lynfield College, who hadn’t won a game yet in the competition. Avondale took out the first set, 25-22, before Lynfield came storming back into the second set, winning 25-20. In the third set, Lynfield finished their comeback, winning 15-11 to take the game 2-1. The next game was against Massey, which was a tough battle, but Avondale ultimately went down 2-0.
WATER POLO
Our Junior Mixed Water Polo team had two defeats over the weekend. Firstly, on Friday night to Western Springs, then again on Sunday evening the team went down to Auckland Grammar. 8
