B DANCE SHOWCASE The second night of 'Transit', the Avondale College Dance Showcase for 2019 took place on Wednesday evening last week. Involving over 150 students, the performance concluded an outstanding two nights of dance that explored the idea of moving from one place to another. The second evening featured cocurricular groups, NZ Scholarship pieces and selected works which celebrated diversity in the classroom. The evening finished with the presentation of awards to students and groups who had made significant contributions to the success of the Dance Department this year, notably the Senior Dance Leaders: Bella Brough, Ashley Elia, Jody Laititi, Cate McIntosh and David Tuitama. TECHNOLOGY: VISUAL COMMUNICATION Tasked with designing a student common room that would fit in the space between Avondale College's art block, A block and PAC, our Year 12 Technology Visual Communication students rose superbly to the challenge! Students had to design their space to fit the specific footprint of the school, work within the styles of Bauhaus, Modernism, Deconstructivism​or De Stijl, and also keep Avondale College's aesthetics in mind. As part of the design process, students researched existing common room designs, created initial ideas and concepts then developed their design on paper through sketching and rendering before making an architectural model of their building, using technology such as Adobe Illustrator and the College's laser cutter to precisely create the model's pieces. Teacher Mrs Brooke Nicholson said the students really enjoyed working on a 'real life' project. "They have had so much fun working practically in three dimensions," she said. "Their passion for the project and for Visual Communication has really shone through in their final outcomes."

CHOREOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR was awarded to Year 13 student, Bella Brough. Her leadership with Senior Contemporary allowed her to present her first choreographic work for Scholarship Dance, 'Inevitable', at the YouDance Festival. Praised for her technical calibre and intricate choreography, Bella continued to create another piece for Showcase, 'River'. UPCOMING DANCER was awarded to Year 12 student, Kyle Carzano. Kyle has been heavily involved in various co-curricular groups, more evidently with Senior Hip Hop, HHINZ Mega Schools and the African Group. His fearless attitude allowed him to extend his vocabulary with contemporary dance that allowed him to persevere into becoming one of the department’s most technical and versatile dancers. DANCER OF THE YEAR was awarded to Year 13 student and Head Boy, Kiahan Simons-Tipau. Kiahan’s passion for Dance has been highlighted beyond the subject, having only taken Dance in Year 9. His bold move to take Level 3 Dance has given him the opportunity to extend his engagement with his culture and identity through dance. Kiahan’s willingness to challenge himself is beyond inspiring, having showcased his solo Scholarship dance at Tempo Dance Festival; his first out-of-school performance. His service to Dance goes beyond just the subject, with his contribution over the years to previous dance showcases, talent quests and musical productions. SPORTS REPORT Monday 21st October – Sunday 27th October SWIMMING Avondale College had five swimmers achieve great success at the recent New Zealand Short Course Championships, held at the Sir Owen Glenn National Aquatic Centre. This is a national event, organised by Swimming New Zealand. and Henderson High School (25-7, 25-16). The girls are playing well and are on course for some great success this season. It was one win and one loss for our Year 9B Girls this week. They first took on Mt Albert Grammar in which they came out on top, winning 2 sets to 0. In their second game, the girls faced much harder opposition in St Dominic’s. The game was forced into a 3rd set, where St Dominic’s won a close one, 15-12, to hand Avondale a 2-1 loss in that game. The Year 10A Girls had just one game on Thursday, when they took on Mt Roskill. A close first set saw Avondale take the lead 1-0, after outscoring the opposition 25-22. Mt Roskill hit back with a narrow 2nd set win, 26-24, to tie the game at one a piece. The 3rd set was also extremely close, with the game coming down to the last point and Avondale coming out on top, 15-14, to win the game two sets to one.

The Girls Cricket team opened their season with a win against St Mary's/Marist (combined team) in the Open T20 division. Avondale College won the toss and elected to field first. Shahana Samadi got Avondale off to a flying start by getting a wicket in the first over! After 20 overs, St Mary's/Marist scored 94 runs. It was a very close finish as Avondale College reached the target in the 19th over, with Player of Day Roshni Oberoi being the highest run scorer, followed closely by Ritisha Kumar and Maanasi Nori. Avondale College won the match by five wickets! VOLLEYBALL Our Year 9A Volleyball Girls remain undefeated after four games, picking up wins on Thursday over Mt Albert Grammar (25-8, 25-7,
RUGBY SEVENS Our Junior Girls 7’s team had a very successful tournament on Thursday last week. The girls began their tournament by taking on Epsom Girls, winning 27-0. Avondale followed this up by defeating Tamaki College, 41-0. They then had a much tougher game against Auckland Girls, with the match ending in a 5-5 draw. Despite these results, we missed out on a semi-final spot on points differential, however bounced back with a win in the playoff against Aorere College, to then win the playoff final and take 3rd place overall. The Senior Girls 7’s team also played at the AKSS tournament. After losing to both Aorere College and Mt Albert Grammar, the girls notched up some strong wins, beating Lynfield 42-0, and winning a close game against Tamaki College, 27-26. In their final game, the girls defeated Green Bay High School, 29-0. Our Senior Boys had a tough tournament, after being placed in a pool with top rugby schools such as Aorere College and De La Salle College. The team were unable to get a win but enjoyed the tournament regardless. Special mention of our Year 13’s who were playing in their final rugby games for the school. Thanks to Tau and Irene Mauga for coaching and managing the girls’ 7's teams, and to Miss Prior for being the teacher in charge of the Junior Girls’ team.

GENERAL • The first three days of exams involve Year 9 & Year 10 students. • Year 9 exams are in Social Science, Mathematics, English and Science and Languages. • Year 10 exams are in Social Science, Mathematics, English and Science and in Option subjects. • Year 10 option exams run according to student’s timetable. • Most exams are 2 hours, but not all. Exams will run for periods 1 & 2 and periods 4 & 5. • Normal timetable runs period 3. • If an exam is not 2 hours then the students involved will be required to wait in the classroom until the 2 hour time period is completed. • On Wednesday 6th November periods 4 and 5 will be normal timetable classes for Year 10. For Year 9 the morning will be normal timetable. • Option exams for Year 10 only are on Wednesday morning as well as Thursday morning and afternoon. • No study leave is given to junior students during these exams. • No permission is given for 6
appointments during the exam days. • A medical certificate will be required for an absence from an exam due to illness. • When sitting exams, normal school discipline applies. • All junior home classrooms have been changed to the same as their exam for the core exams. • Exams are to start promptly at 9.15am in the morning and 1.15pm in the afternoon.
IN THE EXAM ROOM • Sit in rows as instructed. • Leave bags where directed. • Make sure your cell phone is switched off and in your bag. It is not allowed to be in your pocket. • Electronic dictionaries are not allowed in practice external exams. • Approved calculators only, check with your Mathematics teacher. • Please ensure that the exam room is left in the appropriate state as to which it was found. This means checking that desks and chairs are set

correctly, no writing on desks has occurred and any rubbish is put in the classroom bin. This is vitally important as staff and students have spent time presenting rooms in a particular way. TO FIT WITH NZQA CONDITIONS a) Students’ should not use twink. It is in their interests to write legibly. b) There is no food or drink in the exam room, except clear water bottle which must not be labeled c) Students’ are advised to take only clear pencil cases into the exam room. d) Watches cannot be worm during the exam. • The exam begins the moment distribution of papers starts. • Total silence is necessary from then on. • Listen carefully for additional instructions or correction of misprints. • Check that you have the correct paper with all pages correctly printed. • Read instructions carefully. • During the examination, students’ must not communicate with other candidates, copy from another candidate’s work, borrow any equipment or make undue noise or disturb other candidates. • No student is to leave the exam room until full time has expired. • Uniform and appearance must be of the required standard. • If a student needs to go to the toilet during an exam this is allowed. Before they go, mark on their exam paper when they left, and please ask the student to indicate where their cellphone is. If they have a cellphone on them, which they did not put into their bag, they are to leave it with you, to be returned at the end of the exam. Examination irregularities and misconduct will be considered by Mr J Smith (Qualifications Manager) and Dr Brown (Deputy Principal Curriculum, NZQA Principal’s Nominee) and may result in disciplinary action.

TAUREWA CAMP Camp Hireage Looking for a holiday destination? Why not hire our Taurewa camp facility? There are 16 individual huts, sleeping a total of 53 - with room to pitch your tent. A fully equipped kitchen and a four bedroom cottage (sleeps seven) is also available. Register your interest today: taurewa@avcol.school.nz
TAUREWA ADULT HELPERS NEEDED! We would like to draw your attention to an exciting opportunity to work with our students at our school camp, Taurewa, which is located beside the Tongariro National Park. Adult helpers are vital to the success of our Taurewa Camps, and we are currently looking for some more volunteers for upcoming trips! A reasonable level of fitness is required but no experience in the activities is necessary. Each camp is five days long and includes the following activities based around Tongariro National Park: • Year 10s: Kayaking, day tramps, hot pools, low ropes course and more! • Internationals: Overnight tramping, caving, skiing and more!
