SPORTS AWARDS DINNER
Our top sporting teams and individuals were honoured on Friday at our annual Sports Awards Dinner held in the Avondale College Theatre. A highlight of the evening was hearing from Blackcaps (and Avondale College alumni) Jeet Raval and Ajaz Patel, who inspired the audience with stories of their journey from Avondale's 1st XI to the New Zealand cricket team. Congratulations to all who received awards, and in particular to Liam Stolberger and Grace Nweke who won the Jason Twigg Trophies for the Most Outstanding Achievement in Sport for 2019! Monday 14th October – Sunday 20th October CRICKET Our 1st XI Boys kicked off their season by taking on Howick College on Saturday. Howick opened the batting and posted a run tally of 202/9. Avondale’s top bowlers were Dylan King (3/40) and Luke Gray (2/39). The run chase from Avondale was cut short at 116/10. Josh De Zoysa top scored for the team, with 44 runs. Howick took the win by 86 runs. The Year 9 Boys took on Westlake Boys in their opening match of the season. It was a tough day for our boys, who were all out for 91. This total was chased by Westlake in 17 overs, Avondale losing by 10 wickets. It was a tough start to the season for our Year 10 Boys, who went down to Mt Albert Grammar by 83 runs. The run chase fell short at 99 runs, after Mt Albert set a high tally of 182 runs. VOLLEYBALL The Year 9A Girls team have started their season well with two wins from two in their grade. After breezing past Green Bay 2-0, our girls faced Waitakere who forced us into a 3rd set, but Avondale fought hard to win 2-1. Another two wins came on Thursday for our girls, this time with the Year 9B Girls. They defeated Henderson 2-0, before winning 2-1 against Rutherford. Our Year 10A Girls went 1-2 on Thursday. The girls started off with a loss to Onehunga, before beating Mt Albert Grammar 2-1 in their second match. The Junior Boys team have had a slow start to the season, losing both matches on Thursday. The boys lost to Kelston Boys and Onehunga, and will be looking to turn the tide when they face Massey and Waitakere this Thursday. WATER POLO It was a tough start to the water polo season for our Junior Mixed team, who went down to St Peter’s 9-1. This was the team’s first game together and coach Miss Chamley was pleased with the effort shown by the team.

DANCE SHOWCASE: 'TRANSIT' A receptive audience enjoyed a spectacular evening of dance last night as more than 130 students took to the stage to showcase their learning in the subject this year. The second part of the two-evening event will take place at 6pm tonight, with performances by co-curricular dance groups and special guests, Freshmans Dance Crew. Entry is by gold coin donation - don't miss it!
75TH JUBILEE 8-10 MAY 2020 In 2020 Avondale College will be 75 years old! A Jubilee weekend celebration will be held at the College, from 8-10 May, for all former students, staff and BOT members. Programme and registration details will be listed on the College website early in 2020, but in the meantime, please spread the word to all who might be interested! ABSENCES Parents/Caregivers must notify the College by 9.30am each day if their child is away. You can do this in several ways: a) Send a notification via Family Connection (preferred) • Log in to Family Connection • Select ‘Available E-Forms’ (at top left) • Click on Absence Notification • Fill out the details, save and submit. You will receive a confirmatory email once the notification is approved. This replaces the need to supply an absence note to the home room teacher. b) Email the Attendance Officer: absences@avcol.school.nz. Please include your child’s full name, home room class and the reason for the absence. c) Phone the Absence Line: (09) 820 1071 Students are required to provide a written note for all absences, even after the school has been notified by phone. This note must be brought on the first day of attendance after the absence and given to the home room teacher. Parents will receive a text from the school if their child is absent from home room without explanation.

TAUREWA CAMP Camp Hireage Looking for a holiday destination? Why not hire our Taurewa camp facility? There are 16 individual huts, sleeping a total of 53 - with room to pitch your tent. TAUREWA ADULT HELPERS NEEDED! We would like to draw your attention to an exciting opportunity to work with our students at our school camp, Taurewa, which is located beside the Tongariro National Park. Adult helpers are vital to the success of our Taurewa Camps, and we are currently looking for some more volunteers for upcoming trips! A reasonable level of fitness is required but no experience in the activities is necessary. Each camp is five days long and includes the following activities based around Tongariro National Park: • Year 10s: Kayaking, day tramps, hot pools, low ropes course and more! • Internationals: Overnight tramping, caving, skiing and more!
