NETBALL GIRLS TAKE SIXTH PLACE IN NEW ZEALAND A fantastic effort by our Premier netball girls saw them place sixth in New Zealand at the NZSS competition held in Nelson during the holidays! Led by coach (and former Avondale College alumna) Rachel Rasmussen, this was the first time Avondale had made it to Nationals since 2014. The girls rose superbly to the occasion, winning 3 of their 7 matches against the country's very best teams. Congratulations to all the girls who represented the College and themselves so well both on and off the court.

TEMPO DANCE FESTIVAL The acclaimed Tempo Dance Festival celebrates dance in all its forms and styles, and this year Avondale College was invited to perform two highly successful pieces in the secondary schools' show. Kiahan Simons-Tipau (Year 13) performed a solo dance, "Tama Leiloa - Lost Boy" which gave a wryly autobiographical insight into the dilemmas faced by dancers of more than one tradition. Kiahan's performance received high praise from the adjudicator, who said Kiahan "deserves more than a single special mention and his dancing makes me weep." So well received was Kiahan's piece that he was invited by the Artistic Director of Tempo to perform it as the opening act for a sold out performance by Sau E Siva Creatives (Siva Samoa Performing Arts Company) at Q theatre on the Tuesday evening. The second performance by Avondale College was by our ensemble group of Aimee Cao, Kyle Carzano, Vicky Chavez-Vallejo, Alex Du Plessis, Ashley Elia, Sophie Francis, Baileigh Greaves, Erin Ha, Phillip Lalo, Coco Lovatt, Winifer Peteli, Gwyneth Petilla, Crystal Ruddell, Kiahan Simons-Tipau and David Tuitama. Choreographed by Director of Dance, Ms Schmidt and the Year 13 students, the work was a distinctive and moving tribute to cultural identity, with fluidly changing gestures enacted by each dancer. The adjudicator praised the group for the way their immersive piece fit between culture and contemporary art.

Adult helpers are vital to the success of our Taurewa Camps, and we are currently looking for some more volunteers for upcoming trips! A reasonable level of fitness is required but no experience in the activities is necessary. Each camp is five days long and includes the following activities based around Tongariro National Park: • Year 10s: Kayaking, day tramps, hot pools, low ropes course and more! • Internationals: Overnight tramping, caving, skiing and more! If you (or someone you know) would be keen to be involved, or if you would like to know more, please email: taurewa@avcol.school.nz
