Avondale College's musical for 2019: In the Heights opened on Monday matinee to rave reviews!

Featuring a cast of 80 students, a full show band and a great number of backstage helpers and technicians, the show is a high energy performance filled with catchy tunes, and fabulous dance numbers. It is a riveting story about migrants with their struggles and loves. The tunes are a memorable mix of hiphop, salsa and latin rhythms.

Show Co-Directors Miss Jamaliette Tuiletufuga and Mr Nick Smit, say the amount of work the cast and crew have put into the show in the months leading up to show week has been incredible. "They've worked so hard. This is truly their show."

SENIOR REPORT EVENING NEXT WEEK Tuesday 24 September Avondale College’s Senior Report Evening will be held on 24 September, in the College Atrium from 4.30pm to 7.00pm, giving parents the opportunity to meet with teachers to discuss the progress of their child.

The online booking facility for this evening is now available on Family Connection until 22 September. Once bookings close, appointments can only be made manually by students using the form posted out with the report.

SUSO GRAND FINALS Saturday 14 September 3pm Vodafone Events Centre The 2019 Stand Up Stand Out competition again showcased a wonderful array of Avondale College students across all categories. Four of our entries were selected for the grand finals; our Hip Hop group, the Pasifika Mai dance group, Delores Lesatele in Solo Vocals, and our Gospel Choir in the Group Vocals category. The Gospel Choir, directed by Seumanu Simon Matafai, sang I Know Where I’ve Been; a stirring protest march from the Broadway Musical Hairspray, and were awarded second place in their category. This was a wonderful event again, and we look forward to more representation in next year’s SUSO!

11OED & 12OED WAHARAU CAMP Last week the Year 11 and 12 Outdoor Ed classes went to Waharau Regional Park. During the trip the Year 11's completed a first aid certificate, while the Year 12's had a go at the high and low ropes' courses. Both classes also tried their hand at kayaking and raft building, to varying degrees of success. An epic game of capture the flag ended with the Year 11's being crowned champions.

Overall, it was great trip, with a lot of fun had by all.

SPORTS REPORT Monday 9th September – Sunday 15th September

BADMINTON

Our Girls A and Boys A Badminton teams squared off in an allAvondale battle on Friday. The girls proved too strong for the boys, coming away with a 4-2 win.

In another Avondale v Avondale game, our Boys B team defeated our Girls C team, 4-2 on Tuesday.

The Boys C team went down 6-0 to Mt Albert Grammar.

FOOTBALL

On Friday, the annual Staff v Prefects Football match took place on the school fields. The staff were looking to back up last year’s win with another one in 2019. Midfield maestro Mr Amies opened the scoring to put the Staff up 1-0. After being held at 1-0 for some time, the staff managed to snatch another goal, after Mr Boardman snuck the ball past the goalkeeper, putting the staff up 2-0. A questionable penalty decision by referee Mr Sykes saw Logan Clay halve the deficit, making it 2-1 with little time remaining to set up a grandstand finish. With 2 minutes left, Mr Amies lobbed the ball over the Prefects’ goalkeeper, Sam Charles, to grab his second goal of the game and give the staff a 3-1 victory for 2019.

TABLE TENNIS

The A Grade Table Tennis competition wrapped up last week, after Avondale 1 defeated Liston 1 in the final to win back to back titles for Terms 2 & 3. Well done to Marielle Dulangon, Zaheen Khan and Abhay Singh on winning the title.

On Friday night, all A Grade Table Tennis players were invited to a singles knockout tournament, which featured Marielle Dulangon, Zaheen Khan, Albert Thompson and Abhay Singh.

Marielle managed to get all the way through to the final, however she lost to a strong opponent, so placed 2nd. Albert came 3rd, whilst Zaheen and Abhay came 5th equal.

Well done to Bruce Guan, Sarawut Thukhammi, Jack Vu and Baramee Wijit of Avondale 4 for winning the B Grade Table Tennis Competition for Term 3.

More success from Friday night saw our C Grade team of Taj Singh, Manan Patel, Ricci Liang and Lucas Miller take our their Term 3 competition as well.

The College is very sad to hear of the passing of Doe Williams, or 'Coach Doe' as he was known affectionately to many basketball players at Avondale College. Doe coached our Premier and Junior basketball teams for many years and was well-respected by the whole Auckland and New Zealand basketball community. He was passionate about the sport and, in particular, the life skills that could be learnt from participating in a team environment. Doe was a charismatic personality at the College, and his warmth and integrity, as well as his sharp sense of style, will be sorely missed.

BILL RODWELL ROTARY AWARDS 2019 The Bill Rodwell Rotary Award is to assist senior students to further their education at Avondale College. It is awarded to Year 11 or Year 12 students who have been fully involved in school activities, who have done well academically and intend to return to school for one or two years of further study. Family financial circumstances are taken into consideration.

Application forms can be obtained from the main office or the Careers Department. Applications should be handed in to Mr Bennett by the deadline of Friday 27 September.

The Avondale Family Connection allows families to have direct access, through the internet, to a wide range of information about their child’s academic performance, attendance, activities, events, trips, parent/teacher interview appointments and teacher only days.

The information provided includes: Class allocations, timetables, class teachers, NCEA and Cambridge results, attendance data, detention records and assessment reports. TAUREWA CAMP Trip Information We encourage families to make early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately six weeks before departure.

TAUREWA ADULT HELPERS NEEDED! We would like to draw your attention to an exciting opportunity to work with our students at our school camp, Taurewa, which is located beside the Tongariro National Park. Adult helpers are vital to the success of our Taurewa Camps, and we are currently looking for some more volunteers for upcoming trips!

A reasonable level of fitness is required but no experience in the activities is necessary.

Each camp is five days long and includes the following activities based around Tongariro National Park: • Year 10s: Kayaking, day tramps, hot pools, low ropes course and more!

• Internationals: Overnight tramping, caving, skiing and more!

ABSENCES Parents/Caregivers must notify the College by 9.30am each day if their child is away. You can do this in several ways: a) Send a notification via Family Connection (preferred) • Log in to Family Connection • Select ‘Available E-Forms’ (at top left) • Click on Absence Notification • Fill out the details, save and submit.

You will receive a confirmatory email once the notification is approved. This replaces the need to supply an absence note to the home room teacher. b) Email the Attendance Officer: absences@avcol.school.nz. Please include your child’s full name, home room class and the reason for the absence. c) Phone the Absence Line: (09) 820 1071 Students are required to provide a written note for all absences, even after the school has been notified by phone. This note must be brought on the first day of attendance after the absence and given to the home room teacher.

Parents will receive a text from the school if their child is absent from home room without explanation.

Students must have a note from home if they are signing out of the College.
