B PASIFIKA MAI TO PERFORM AT THE PASIFIKA CHALLENGE A passion for Pasifika dance has led to an exciting opportunity for our Pasfika Mai dance crew - they have been invited to perform at Eden Park on Saturday 31 August during the Pasfika Challenge II matches between New Zealand Heartland, Samoa, Tonga and Fiji. Representing all corners of the Pacific, our students have spent many hours in recent months devising choreography which reflects the diversity of the group, and they have put together a vibrant, energetic performance that is sure to wow the crowds at Eden Park. It's not the only recent success for the group; after a very competitive series of heats, they have also been chosen to perform in the final of the Auckland-wide Stand Up Stand Out performing arts competition at the Vodafone Events Centre on Saturday 14 September. SCHOOL SHOW: IN THE HEIGHTS With opening night now less than three weeks away, the cast of In the Heights have been hard at work rehearsing and putting the finishing touches on the show. In the Heights tells the universal story of a vibrant community in New York’s Washington Heights neighbourhood – and taking the lead role of bodega owner Usnavi is David Tuitama, recently returned from his National Youth Shakespeare trip to London's Globe theatre. Also taking lead roles are our very own Head Boy Kiahan Simons-Tipau, Talent Quest winner Delores Lesatele, and Dance and Drama student Maddison Barnes. In the Heights is written by Lin-Manuel Miranda (who also wrote the award-winning Hamilton) and our Avondale College cast and crew are working hard to ensure this will be a show to remember! TRIFECTA WIN FOR NETBALL It has been a hugely successful season of netball, with last week's junior finals seeing our Junior Premier team also emerge victorious to win their division! This means that all three of our Premier netball teams (Prem 1, Prem 2 and Junior Prems) won their zone competition! In total, five of our junior netball teams made it through to the finals, with three teams winning gold, and two teams, silver. Congratulations to all the girls - and their coaches - on an outstanding season!
BOT POLICY REVIEW The Avondale College Board of Trustees is currently reviewing all of its existing policies, as part of its self-review cycle. The policies are located on the website http://www.avcol.school.nz/about/board_ of_trustees.aspx The Board invites the community to review its current policies, and provide any comments, by email, to the Board Secretary, Rochelle Smith zsmr@avcol. school.nz, by 2 September 2019. The Board will consider any feedback from stakeholders at the 4 September 2019 Board meeting. The Board has also recently approved a Child Protection Policy that will shortly go online.
TTCF SCHOLARSHIPS MATHEX Last week the Mathematics Department took two Year 9 teams and two Year 10 teams to the Barfoot & Thompson Stadium in Kohimarama to compete in the annual Mathex competition. All four teams competed to a high level, with both Year 9 teams getting a score of 90 out of 100, one Year 10 team getting a score of 95 out of 100, and the other Year 10 team getting a perfect score of 100 out of 100! Congratulations to all who took part.
Thirty-nine $2000 scholarships are available to Year 12 or 13 Avondale College students who are intending to study a tertiary course next year at degree level or NZQA Level 4 or above. Our thanks to The Trusts Community Foundation for their generous support of our students. The funds can be used towards course fees, a portable computer and associated software, accommodation (room only), textbooks or essential equipment. Applicants must be permanent residents, have academic or technical ability and have contributed to school or community. Application forms can be downloaded from the intranet under Careers, Scholarships and Finance or picked up from Careers. Applications are due by 3:30pm Tuesday September 17. Boys A: Drew 3-3 with Parnell, but were victorious on points. Boys B: Went down 6-0 to Mt Roskill. Boys C: Also lost 6-0 to Mt Roskill. Girls A: Beat Parnell, 4-2. Girls C: Defeated Mt Albert Grammar on points after the match ended 3-3.
GYMNASTICS
Over the weekend, Sophie Judd represented Avondale College in the New Zealand Gymnastics Secondary Schools Championships. Sophie did extremely well, achieving 2nd place in the Uneven Bars and 6th overall. Great achievement, Sophie!
HOCKEY
1st XI Boys Hockey: We were very fortunate to have perfect hockey weather for our gold medal final against Westlake Boys 2nd XI. This was the Super City A grade final and we were excited about defending our title! There was beautiful, disciplined team play across the pitch and then an amazing shot into the attacking circle by Jappreet Kullar, deftly deflected by Alex Stenberg – around the keeper - and score! One-nil just two minutes into the game! The game ebbed and flowed, with some great attacks by our team and again the big crash balls from the opposition. We used our heads and let the crash balls through a layer or two and then picked the ball up to attack once again. Five minutes from the end of the second half, we let an opposition crash ball go and this time their forward picked up the ball and messily took it toward our goal – we saved the first shot; other defenders joined the fray; more attackers also joined in … and somehow one got a lucky stick to the ball and got the ball moving goalward – what a messy goal! Now with five minutes to go, we had to fight to try to score again! No matter what attack we threw at our opposition they soaked up the pressure. The full time whistle blew – we had to go to a penalty shoot-out to see who would take home the title for 2019 and the gold medals. One shot went wide after reclaiming a deflection and beating the keeper! The next went wide the opposite side as the shooter’s feet slipped. Lewis Rose made sure his goal went in! 2-2! Then the opposition scored, 2-3! Our next player up tried to lob the keeper – but the tall keeper rushed out at our attacker and saved the shot! 2-3 still! The next opposition shot was made: 4-2 and no chance for us to win. We took home silver and it was an enthralling match from start to finish; as challenging as any grand final should be. 1st XI Girls Hockey: Had a 0-0 draw with Baradene in their final game of the season.

DISTANCE RUNNING
Two of our athletes, Wiremu Ngamotu and Ayub Sayid, participated in the AKSS Road Race Championships on Tuesday 20 August, which was held at Pulman Park, Takanini. The competition included a range of talented athletes from across Auckland. A 15th place finish for Wiremu in the Junior Boys grade and a 9th place position for Ayub in the Intermediate Boys race was a great result for each of them!
FOOTBALL
1st XI Girls Football: Came up against Mt Roskill in the final of the APC Tournament on Wednesday. Just two weeks prior they had lost 2-0 to this team, but our girls rose superbly to the challenge, and a Maclani Michael penalty secured a 1-0 win for the girls. Year 9 Boys Football: Went down 3-1 to Rosmini on Saturday. Year 10 Boys Football: Wrapped up their season with a dominant display against Long Bay College. Four first half goals to Aaron Bone got the boys off to a flying start, and they never looked back, winning 10-0. Special mention of Aaron, who captains the side and was able to notch up 20 goals across the season! 1st XI Hockey

Junior Girls Hockey: The final game of the season for the girls, and unfortunately, Diocesan proved to be too strong an opponent. A couple of early goals against the Avondale girls certainly knocked their confidence. As the rain began, the Avondale girls tried to claw back the ball, but Diocesan showed good control and they dominated the play. By half time the score was 3-0. Avondale showed some renewed vigour in the second half, and did well to block numerous attempts at our goal. A couple of good attempts at goal were narrowly missed, which was heart-breaking. Full time score: 4-0 to Diocesan. The girls celebrated their coach, Miss Augustin, and thanked her for her wonderful support, her hockey expertise and her tireless dedication towards the team for the entire season - especially on those early mornings.

NETBALL
Premier 1 Netball: Played Massey High School in the grand final of the Premier 1 grade. Before the match the two teams had faced off twice, with each team taking a game. Avondale jumped out to an early lead, however a 3rd quarter push from Massey had us on the ropes. The 4th quarter was neck and neck, with Avondale prevailing, 44-41. This is the first time in history that a school has taken out both the Premier 1 and 2 grades in the same year, and it was our Premier 1 team’s second successive title. Well done, girls! Junior Premier Netball: Faced off with Kelston Girls in the final of their competition on Saturday. The girls were heavy favourites heading into this game, as they had won every game of the season. Avondale showed their class throughout the match and came away with a 43-25 win to take the title. Year 10 Black Netball: Came up just short in their final, losing 33-25 to Rutherford to come 2nd. Player of the Day went to Hope Pauli. Year 10 Grey Netball: Had an outstanding win in their final, defeating Green Bay, 35-22. Player of the Day went to Annette Saumanaia. Year 9 Black Netball: Went down 49-13 to Waitakere to come 2nd in their competition. Year 9 White Netball: Narrowly defeated Rutherford 15-13 to be crowned winners of their grade.
RUGBY
1st XV Rugby: The 1st XV played their final against Pukekohe High at Orakei Domain in front of a strong crowd. With the first half wind at their backs the Avondale team dominated possession and territory for long stretches and were the first to get on the board via a penalty goal from first five Ollie Carroll. Pukekohe demonstrated some resilient defence in repelling the Avondale attacks before scoring two tries of their own to take a 3-12 lead into the half time break. With the second half wind at their backs Pukekohe was able to play the ball down the Avondale end for the majority of the half and was able to accumulate points through four unanswered penalty goals, extending their lead to 3-24. Avondale tried to fight their way back into the match but their execution was not where it needed to be until flanker Hayden Warrington was able to score a converted try as time ran out to close the gap to 10-24. The disappointed boys can take solace in their effort and development as a team, and with the majority of the team returning in 2020, they can build on the successes of this season. 2nd XV Rugby: Came up against St Peter’s in their semi-final on Saturday, who had only lost one game all season. The boys battled hard in the bad weather, but fell just short, 20-19.

TAUREWA CAMP Trip 13 campers were privileged to enjoy the Otorohanga Kiwi House and Native Bird Park, mini golf, and even a bonus second day at the snow due to strong winds on the first day! We would like to make special mention of the team of four boys who took great care in meticulously cleaning all the boots - they were returned looking brand new! We would like to draw your attention to an exciting opportunity to work with our students at our school camp, Taurewa, which is located beside the Tongariro National Park. Adult helpers are vital to the success of our Taurewa Camps, and we are currently looking for some more volunteers for upcoming trips! A reasonable level of fitness is required but no experience in the activities is necessary. Each camp is five days long and includes the following activities based around Tongariro National Park: • Year 10s: Kayaking, day tramps, hot pools, low ropes course and more! • Internationals: Overnight tramping, caving, skiing and more!
