B MULTIPLE AWARDS FOR JAZZ BANDS Avondale College bands made a huge impression at the Auckland Jazz Competition, with all seven groups receiving awards!

Particular congratulations go to the members of our Avondale Jazz Quartet (Benjamin Goh, Ruairi Brunt, Sunwoo Oh and Tyler Diprose), and the Blue Note Combo (Toby Barrett, Max Barrett, Tyler Diprose, Carlos Brown and Lucas Kewell) who were invited to perform at the grand final performance at the Auckland Jazz and Blues Club on Saturday afternoon.

The quality of both bands was recognised by the awards. They received a platinum award for the Avondale Jazz Quartet and a Gold for the Blue Note Combo.

In total, Avondale received seven awards: a platinum, two golds and four silver - a fantastic addition to our Music Department's trophy cabinet, and wonderful recognition of the hard work and talent of our jazz musicians and their dedicated teachers.

KBB MUSIC FESTIVAL UNDERWAY A superb performance last night at the KBB Music Festival has seen our Premiere String Ensemble receive an invitation to perform at the Gala Concert this Saturday at the Holy Trinity Cathedral, after being judged one of the top four chamber orchestras at the Auckland-wide competition this week.

In total, six Avondale College music groups are taking part in the festival.

Our Symphony Orchestra, Taikaka Orchestra, Prep String Ensemble and Premiere String Ensemble performed yesterday, and our Aspire Big Band and Avondale College Big Band will perform at St Mary's Church on Thursday afternoon at 2pm and 4pm.

The KBB Music Festival is the largest music festival in Auckland, involving over 4,500 students in 145 groups from more than 50 schools across the greater Auckland region and beyond.

JAZZ & SOUL NIGHT Thursday's Jazz & Soul Night was an outstanding event, showcasing a huge range of musical talent!

Performances were given by the Avondale College Jazz Academy, the Gospel Choir, 'dale Soul, our two Big Bands, multiple jazz combos and more!

Undoubtedly one of the highlights of the evening was the grand finale from the "Big Big Band", which saw our strings players and big band join forces to perform "It's a New Day", featuring the huge vocal talent of Year 11 student Delores Lesatele. Congratulations to all who took part!

NETBALL PREMIER 2 TEAM - 2019 CHAMPIONS! Our Premier 2 Netball Team are winners of the Premier 2 Waitakere Netball Grade, beating St Dominic’s 33-28 last night.

YEAR 11 SELF PORTRAIT EXHIBITION

Year 11 Visual Art Our talented Year 11 students were involved in an exhibition in the Atrium that showcased painted self portraits inspired by the artist Olaf Hajek. They had to experiment with paint techniques and paint layering to build up interesting textures and create a portrait that was engaging and themed around their interests and environment. These works will be included in their external folio submissions.

YEAR 12 OED TRAMP Our Year 12 Outdoor Education students hit the trail last week, heading up to the Pinnacles in the Coromandel. Highlights included awesome views, pretty rivers and waterfalls to gaze at. The break in the weather gave them some great photo opportunities, and the food was superb as well! Thanks to the students and staff for making the trip a memorable learning experience.

YOUNG PHOTOGRAPHERS FOR THE ENVIRONMENT COMPETITION 2019 Avondale College students have once again tackled some key environmental issues by entering the Young Reporters for the Environment (YRE) photography competition, run by Keep New Zealand Beautiful.

The goal of the YRE Litter Less campaign is to reduce litter and affect longterm behaviour change among young people. It aims to empower young people to take a stand on environmental issues they feel strongly about and to give them a platform to articulate these issues through the media of writing, photography or video.

SUSO DANCE Two Avondale College dance groups have been added to the growing list of Avondale College performers to win places in the grand final of the Stand Up Stand Out performing arts competition!

Twenty-two students were involved in the two Avcol groups performing at the dance heats on Wednesday last week. They were our cocurricular Junior Hip Hop group, and our Pasifika Mai group, (made up of Year 9-13 students) who performed a cultural fusion piece.

Preparation for SUSO had begun in Term 2, first with lunchtime rehearsals, and then with more rehearsals being added before and after school. With 12 schools from all over Auckland competing for just five places in the final, our groups knew the competition would be tough, but our students rose superbly to the challenge and ultimately Avondale College is the only school with two dance groups to make it through!

"They were so proud to represent the College, their families and themselves, and that was reflected in their performances," said Director of Dance, Ms Santana Schmidt.

The groups have been well supported by staff members: Guinevere Alai, Jackie Nesi, Michael Hambammer, Paul May and Chanwyn Southgate. Russell Sua has also been a huge supporter of Pasifika Mai and we would like to acknowledge him for all he has contributed to the students and the staff working with Pasifika Mai. The finals of Stand Up Stand Out will be held at on the 14th of September at the Vodafone Events Centre in Manukau.

BADMINTON

Boys A: Beat top-of-the-table Glendowie 4-2 on Friday.

Boys B: Outclassed Mt Roskill 6-0.

Boys C: Drew with Lynfield 3-3, but unfortunately lost the game on points.

Girls A: Edged out Onehunga Boys on points, 110-90 after a 3-3 draw.

Girls C: Went down 6-0 to One Tree Hill on Tuesday.

BASKETBALL

Senior A Girls Basketball: Took on Baradene in the final round robin game of the season. The girls played well but were pipped 45-43. This result means the girls will get another shot at Baradene when they face off in the semi-final.

Senior A Boys Basketball: Dropped out of finals contention after a 8572 loss to Northcote. The boys have finished 6th in the Senior A grade.

FOOTBALL

1st XI Girls Football: Defeated Howick 1-0 off the back of Che Stockenstroom’s goal. This sets up a semi-final spot for the girls.

2nd XI Girls Football: Fought hard but came up short, losing 4-1 to Henderson. The girls will be playing off for 3rd next week. Good luck!

Junior Girls Football: Went down to St Kentigern, 7-1.

1st XI Boys Football: Had a tough 4-0 loss to Rutherford on Friday.

Junior Boys Football: Lost 2-1 to Liston.

3rd XI Boys Football: Dominated Mt Albert Grammar, coming away with a 5-0 win.

Year 9 Boys Football: Went down 3-2 to Howick.

Year 10 Boys Football: Defeated Mt Roskill 2-1 on Saturday.

HOCKEY

1st XI Boys Hockey: From the warm-up to the before match briefing, there was a focus to the lads that had been missing for the last couple of weeks. Our team was down a couple of influential players but our back line worked brilliantly, with Shoma Hirota directing things from the centre and weaving the ball back and forward with Daniel Parkinson, Tristan Kewell and Jappreet Kullar. There was a sense that we could win this game from the start and after a patient, well-worked penalty corner, the ball finally smashed through the opposition keeper's legs - and we scored. This was a goal well finished by Lewis Rose. Now the fight to keep the lead and not let Kristin back into the game before heading to the half-time break ensued. Everyone was working hard; running for the ball and not holding onto it but passing. A tenacious goal was slotted through the keeper again, this time by Alex Stenberg. Again the boys rallied to ensure the counter-attacks were shut down and pressure mounted with the lads double teaming and blocking the ball from getting into our defensive circle. The opposition were getting frustrated - shots misfiring and rushed back-stick shots - all going wide. There were also amazing saves with the opposition getting a couple of drag flicks away for their attacking PC's but the team held strong and cleared these. Three more goals were scored after some phenomenal end-toend play: two by us - one was a goal well executed by Alex bringing

up his double, and he also had a hand in deflecting a ripper of a crash ball by Jappreet Kullar, too, that ended up like a pinball through three forwards in the attacking circle around every single defender to the bewilderment of the opposition keeper. It happened so fast the keeper cried "foot, foot, foot" but there was nothing but sticks deflecting the shot - scoooooore - with a beautiful angle to finish - well done team and well done Shivang Patel, for the final magnificent touch! In the dying minutes of the second half there was a brief break away by Kristin and the player carried it fully through the team to snatch one goal back. The end result: 4-1 win to Avondale - well done! And a big thank you to Mr Stenberg again for his time and help directing the team. Also a huge thank you to Zac Jacobson - super-sub - coming on board at the last minute to be able to fill in where needed.

Year 9 Football team

2nd XI Boys Hockey: Came up short against St Peter’s, losing 1-0.

1st XI Girls Hockey: Went down 1-0 to Mt Roskill on Thursday.

Junior Girls Hockey: The Avondale girls dominated the first half of the game, with lots of early attempts at the goal narrowly missing. But after a few good passes from Moe Hirota to Angelina Revell-Lewis to Alice Duckworth, the girls secured their first goal. A very close attempt saw the Pakuranga goalie quickly deflect the shot at their goal. Pakuranga began to fire up on all engines, but the continued skilful passing of the girls saw Moe scoring the second goal for the team. Play continued and passing between Alisi to the front of the goal saw Angelina chip it into the back of the goal for their third score. And before the half time whistle blew, another beautiful passing combination from Alice and Moe saw the fourth goal for the Avondale girls. Half-time score: 4-0 to Avondale. As our team were incredibly dominant in the first half, our Coach, Miss Augustin, saw this as an opportunity to try the girls out in different positions for the experience. The girls continued to dominate and ensured Pakuranga remained goalless throughout the game, while Avondale used the opportunity to try a few new tricks and manoeuvres. Full-time score: 4-0 to Avondale. Player of the Day was Alisi Pole.

Premier 1 team @ Netball Combined Points Tournament

Junior Premier Netball team - unbeaten this whole season!

NETBALL

Combined Points Tournament: On Wednesday 7 August our Junior Premier Netball team competed in the Auckland Combined Points Tournament. The girls won their four pool matches, before taking on Mt Albert Grammar in the semi-final in a very physical but fast paced and skilled match. The girls managed to get past our cross town rivals 17-13, to go into the grand final against St Kentigern, which proved to be another physical game. Fitness and composure ultimately got the better of the Avondale team, and they went down 16-11, to finish 2nd in Auckland. The school is very proud of the girls for such a successful day, where the girls showed incredible sportsmanship and commitment, putting Avondale College back on the map in Auckland netball. A big thank you to coach Millie ManuelNathan, manager Paula Maiu’u, and all the families of the girls for their support.

Premier 1 Netball: Beat Western Springs 45-29.

Premier 2 Netball: Managed to get past Waitakere College on Tuesday night, coming away with a 32-26 win.

Senior White Netball: Had a strong 24-10 win over St Dominic’s.

Senior Grey Netball: Were defeated by St Dominic’s, 26-15.

Year 9 Black @ the Auckland Combined Points Netball Tournament

Senior Black Netball: Also lost to St Dominic’s, 35-10.

Year 9 Black Netball: Narrowly beat Lynfield, 25-23.

Year 9 White Netball: Were too good for Green Bay, winning 37-6.

Year 9 Grey Netball: Lost to Green Bay, 37-3.

Junior Premier Netball: Continue to dominate, this time beating Massey 49-15. Meyuti Poutu was Player of the Day. Year 10 Black Netball: Had a close loss to Rutherford, 27-24, with Grace Eade winning Player of the Day. Year 10 White Netball: Lost 28-18 to Western Springs.

Year 10 Grey Netball: Went down 29-24 to Sunderland. Well done to Shina Sharma for taking Player of the Day, Year 10 Silver Netball: Lost 52-7 to Henderson. Player of the Day went to Chanuri Fernando.

RUGBY

1st XV Rugby: The 1st XV travelled to top-of-the-table Pukekohe High for the final round robin fixture, needing a win to have any chance at a playoff position. The home team started the game dominating territory and scoring two converted tries to take a 14-0 lead. The Avondale team fought to get back into the game, with Isimase Tavae kicking a penalty on half-time to close the game to 3-14. In the second half, Avondale took control, with winger Isireli Senibulu dotting down in the corner to narrow the gap to 8-14. The score remained unchanged until the last five minutes of the game before Isimase was able to get over the try line and was converted by first five Ollie Carroll to give Avondale a tight lead, 15-14. With the clock winding down, the visiting side fought to hold onto the lead before Adre Ravuvu sealed off a man-of-the-match performance, scoring under the posts. The 22-14 win puts the team into the semi-finals next weekend away against either Rosehill or Alfriston College.

2nd XV Rugby: Kept their finals' hopes alive with a 26-5 win over Dilworth. The boys need a win over Howick next week to secure their spot in the top 4.

U60kg Rugby: Went down to Waiuku on Saturday 40-26. The boys also face Howick in a battle to decide the finals matchups.

U15 Rugby: Went down to Papatoetoe 25-0 and will play their final game of the season on Saturday against One Tree Hill here at Avondale.

Girls 10’s Rugby: Moved up the standings to 4th after an outstanding 46-10 win over Auckland Girls Grammar on Monday.

SQUASH

Senior B Boys Squash: Were too good for Elim, beating them 10-6.

Junior Boys Squash: Welcomed Orewa to our school, looking to win the grade. The boys came out strongly and didn’t look back, taking it out 3-1. This gave them 1st place for the competition. Awesome effort, boys!

Girls A Squash: Faced off with rivals Mt Albert Grammar in their final.

After drawing with them earlier in the season, the girls had a great chance. Unfortunately, it didn’t go to plan, and Avondale went down 3-1, but still finished 2nd in their grade, which is a great effort.

Girls B Squash: Took on Orewa College in the championship decider, but came up short, losing 3-1 to give them 2nd place in the competition.

SWIMMING

At the College Sport Individual Championships held on Sunday, Avondale College had eight swimmers representing the school. Our swimmers achieved a great amount of success, with many medals won.

Ikko Shibuya: 1st 100m Freestyle, 1st 100m Fly, 1st 200m Freestyle, 2nd 50m Freestyle.

Jacob Laurence: 1st 200m Freestyle, 1st 100m Backstroke, 1st 200m Backstroke, 2nd 100m Individual Medley.

Alex Dunkley: 1st 100m Fly, 1st 200m Fly. Jayden Collins: 3rd 200m Freestyle.

Well done to all our swimmers, including Caitlin Stoneman, Deva Bennett, Ingrid Longstaff and Olivia Stairmand for representing Avondale College to such a high standard.

TAUREWA CAMP Trip 12 10FRA & 10GTH was mainly directed by the weather. A snowy but enjoyable day was had on the slopes of Turoa, with a fresh walk to Taranaki Falls the following day. Not once was there a grumpy, cold or sad face as they were kitted out in thermals and correct gear. As the temperature continued to drop , Plan B kicked in, with rock climbing, team building and low ropes activities before finishing off with a soak at Tokaanu Hot Pools.

Trip Information We encourage families to make early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately six weeks before departure.

We would like to draw your attention to an exciting opportunity to work with our students at our school camp, Taurewa, which is located beside the Tongariro National Park. Adult helpers are vital to the success of our Taurewa Camps, and we are currently looking for some more volunteers for upcoming trips!

A reasonable level of fitness is required but no experience in the activities is necessary.

Each camp is five days long and includes the following activities based around Tongariro National Park: • Year 10s: Kayaking, day tramps, hot pools, low ropes course and more!

• Internationals: Overnight tramping, caving, skiing and more!
