B RETIREMENT OF PRINCIPAL ANNOUNCED After 40 years in the education sector, and nearly twenty of these as Principal of Avondale College, Brent Lewis has announced his decision to retire at the end of the year. A passionate advocate of education, Mr Lewis's tenure at Avondale College has been characterised by his commitment to giving every student the opportunity to reach their fullest potential. Chairperson of the Avondale College Board of Trustees, Dave Erson says Mr Lewis cares deeply for the College's diverse community and has worked tirelessly to bring about positive change across the entire school. "As Principal, Brent has successfully led an amazing transformation of the College. He drove the multi-million dollar rebuild of the College and has been instrumental in many more positive changes, including the dramatic increase in achievement rates across the entire school." The school will officially acknowledge Mr Lewis's outstanding leadership and immense contribution to the life of the College in Term 4.

GREEN JAM SUSTAINABILITY CONFERENCE On Monday 5 August the Environmental Council leaders and Mr White attended the Green Jam Sustainability Conference, hosted by the Auckland Zoo. It was a very inspiring day with lots of great talks and workshops. The key take home message was to not get overwhelmed with the current state of the earth, but to stay positive and lead by example with small individual changes. This may be as simple as using a reusable coffee cup, eating less meat, switching to a dairy free milk for breakfast cereal, growing your own vegetables, taking public transport and planting bee friendly flowers in the garden. The Environmental Council have left with lots of great ideas for future projects.

FIFTH AND EIGHTH IN WORLD AT MICROSOFT WORLD CHAMPS Two Avondale College students have once again made it to the world's top ten listings for the Microsoft Office Specialist World Championships, held in New York last week. Now in its 18th year, the Microsoft Office Specialist competition attracted more than 850,000 candidates from 119 countries. To enter the competition, students aged 13 to 22 took a qualifying Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification exam to demonstrate their mastery of Microsoft Office products. Regional competitions were held worldwide and 162 student finalists (including five from Avondale College!) from 57 countries competed in the final round of competition in the USA. In the concluding round, competitors participated in unique project-based tests to demonstrate their ability to create documents, spreadsheets, and presentations for the information presented in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Incredibly, two Avondale College students once again made the world's top ten in their individual competitions: Mohanshu Vaidya came fifth in Microsoft Word 2013, and Ed Allison came eighth in Microsoft Excel 2013! This means that a total of nineteen Avondale College students have placed in the world's top ten of this competition since we began entering six years ago. It is safe to say that no other school worldwide has been so highly placed in this global competition. Congratulations to our five national representatives, and especially Mohanshu and Ed!

Hundreds of prospective students and their families braved the cold weather on Wednesday afternoon to experience the many educational opportunities available here at Avondale College, at our annual Open Evening. There were a huge number of interactive displays and fun learning-based activities across all our departments; visitors were able to sample baking and barista-made coffee or hot chocolate in Food Technology, select their favourite apple variety in Horticulture, try picking up jaffas with chopsticks in Languages, test their balance on the low-ropes activity at the Taurewa and Outdoor Education station, and get a taste of what being a student at Avondale College is really like! Enrolments for the 2020 year are now open, with interviews for prospective Year 9 students being held this week.

NCEA WORKSHOPS SUCCESS FOR AVCOL MUSICIANS - WEST AUCKLAND IN AUCKLAND COMPETITIONS Understanding the Changes to NCEA – MoE Workshops – August 2019 In May, the Minister of Education announced the changes to NCEA that will strengthen the qualification for all our young people. The Ministry of Education are running 26 regional hui that are open to anyone wanting to learn more about the changes: • What did we hear from New Zealanders last year that led to the changes? • Key things you need to know about the changes • How will the changes impact and benefit students, teachers and kaiako, parents and whānau, and the wider community? • When will the changes happen? >> Register now to an event in your region The workshops will run from 6.30-8.30pm and catering will be provided. All ages welcome. The seven changes are: 1. Make NCEA more accessible 2. Mana ōrite mō te mātauranga Māori 3. Strengthen literacy and numeracy requirements 4. Have fewer, larger standards 5. It has been a busy few weeks for our Music Department, with students involved in a number of competitions throughout Auckland. Seven of our jazz bands (five combos and two big bands) performed at the Auckland Schools Jazz Competition at the Point Chevalier RSA in the weekend, with two of our combos (the Avondale College Quartet and Five Spot Combo) being named in the top five combos in Auckland, and going through to the finals being held this weekend. Meanwhile, the heats for the Auckland-wide Stand Up Stand Out competition have been running, with two Avondale College vocalists, Delores Lesatele and Monet Ikinepule being selected to go through to the semi-finals rounds. Our Gospel Choir has once again been chosen to go straight through to the finals, which will be held on Saturday 14 September, 3 – 6.30pm at the Vodafone Events Centre. The heats for dance groups and bands are still being held, and we wish our Avondale competitors all the best as they take to the stage in these rounds over the next two weeks. Our music groups (Symphony Orchestra, String Ensemble and Big Bands) are also working hard towards the Auckland-wide KBB Music Festival, which is being held in Parnell next week. Finally, don't miss seeing our top jazz, soul and R&B musicians live in action at the Jazz & Soul night which is being held tomorrow in the Avondale College Theatre. Doors open at 6:30pm for a 7:00pm start, and entry is by gold coin donation.

GEOGRAPHY TRIP TO ROTORUA Thursday last week saw 90 Year 13 Geography students boarding buses ready for the best field trip of the Geography year – the Rotorua tourism field trip. Over three action packed days in Rotorua the trip investigated several key questions such as What is Tourism Development? Why are attractions located in particular places? What benefits do attractions get by clustering together? How is the city laid out and why? And how has Rotorua changed over the last 180 years? On reflection during the bus ride home students were asked to consider the opposite - what would Rotorua be like today without tourism? Throughout the trip, students visited and enjoyed a number of attractions where they could ‘be the tourist’ to understand the tourist. Highlights included the Luge, the Agrodome, the Redwood Forest, and New Zealand’s third most popular tourist attraction, Te Puia for its Pohutu Geyser, steaming mud pools and the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute. The final day gave students the option to try the rides at Velocity Valley where students took jet boat rides, tried out the giant 40m high Swoop swing, and even a couple of bungy jumps. Understandably, the trip gave students a great foundation of understanding on the topic of Tourism Development, along with fond memories of a great three days exploring the world with friends.
SENIOR EXAMS Friday 16 August Friday 23 August During this time all of our senior students, with the exception of those in Learning Support (Class 2) and the Transition classes, will be granted study leave to prepare for their examinations. Please note, that due to internal assessment components, not all subjects are examined during this upcoming week. It is compulsory for students to attend their exams as per the examination timetable on page 9. Junior students attend classes as normal.

POP UP GLOBE On 31 July, students from the Year 12 AS English classes visited the Pop Up Globe in Ellerslie to see Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, which we have been studying in class. It was a very enjoyable production. The show we went to was only for high school groups and so we laughed at all the modern references. Half of us were 'groundlings' (we stood to watch the play) in the first half and then we swapped over to the tiered seating for the second half. Even though some of our legs were tired afterwards it was still definitely worth it and we all had fun. - Emily Smith, Year 12

Boys A: Lost 5-1 to ACG Parnell. Boys B: Had a good 4-2 win against One Tree Hill to kick off the Term 3 championship. Boys C: Went down 5-1 to Mt Roskill on Tuesday. Girls A: Drew 3-3 with Auckland Grammar, but lost the game on points. Girls C: Came up short in their game, going down to Lynfield 6-0.
BASKETBALL
Senior A Girls Basketball: Continue to win, easing past Birkenhead 110-61, behind Maclani Michael’s outstanding 50 point game. Senior A Boys Basketball: Made it three wins on the trot when they defeated Long Bay 102-91 on Monday. Junior A Boys Basketball: Went down to Kelston Boys, 49-39. U19 Boys Basketball: Came up against Onehunga on Wednesday in the final of the U19 Boys Bowl. It was a close match right until the final buzzer, but the boys came away with the victory: 47-46, to win the competition. U17A Boys Basketball: Had a strong win on Thursday, beating Western Springs 33-23. Junior Girls Basketball: Went down 14-12 to St Mary’s.

The recent North Islands Track Champs were held at the Cambridge Velodrome. Holly Bliss rode strongly over the two days in the three individual events, but her best result came in the teams event with a great ride in the team sprint. Racing as a composite team with a rider from the Diocesan, the two girls set the second fastest qualifying time of the day. This would have put them into the gold final but unfortunately composite teams cannot medal, however it’s great to see Holly go so well.

1st XI Girls Football: Played the first game of the APC Competition against Mt Roskill. Unfortunately the girls went down 2-0. 2nd XI Girls Football: The 2nd XI Girls were up against St Dominic’s College this week in the first round of the playoffs. It was an intense physical match, with both teams being evenly matched for the entire game. Some fantastic runs down the sideline by Joanna Poland created opportunities for Avondale to score. Roshni Oberoi (top goal scorer this season) scored the only goal for the game. This was an outstanding and commendable effort by the whole team. Special mention should be made of Buna Kedir for her great skills on offence, and Zuhenna Mohammed for holding the defensive line together. Junior Girls Football: Lost 6-1 to Westlake Girls. 1st XI Boys Football: Despite missing seven of their starting players, the boys played well against Macleans, but came up just short, losing 2-0. Thanks to all the boys who stepped up to help out for this game. Junior Boys Football: Had a 2-2 draw with Mt Albert Grammar. 3rd XI Boys Football: Were just beaten by Green Bay, 2-1 on Saturday. Year 9 Boys Football: Went down 1-0 against Rangitoto. Year 10 Boys Football: Behind Aaron Bone’s second hat trick of the season, were able to beat Macleans 6-2 on Saturday.

1st XI Boys Hockey: The game started with neither team dominating, until about ten minutes in when Jappreet Kullar lifted a beautiful high ball to Alex Stenberg, opening up their defence for the first time. A great attack from Tristan Kewell and Lewis Rose feeding Anoosh Kulkarni up front, narrowly missed scoring. Shivang Patel then drew some opposition feet nicely for a penalty corner to us. Alex had their goalie all the way out to the left of the circle, but the open goal was not beckoning. Jappreet’s reverse stick hit went high, followed by Tristan’s great strength up the right, but still the goal eluded us. Ritesh Hanmenthu saved a penalty corner against with a lightening glove. Things started to get scrappy near half time but Tristan fought hard and his shot rebounded off the pads to Anoosh who scored! 1-0 up at half time. The first ten minutes in the second half were disastrous, however, as we struggled to retain our formation and the opposition came at us aggressively. A beautiful individual goal sliced through our defensive lines to draw the match at 1-1. A great hit from a penalty corner against made it 1-2, then our quick start backfired with a another field goal on counter attack leaving the boys stunned at 1-3 down. The rest of the game was a struggle and this was a frustrating loss for us, but next week is another day. 2nd XI Boys Hockey: Had an outstanding 3-1 win against St Peter’s on Wednesday. 1st XI Girls Hockey: Were narrowly defeated 3-2 by Macleans on Thursday. Junior Girls Hockey: The first half saw Avondale testing out the waters with some great passing skills between players, and solid attempts to find the back of the opposition goal - but these didn't quite connect. Baradene made an appearance on the score board with their first point, but Avondale showed determination to match that right up until the whistle blew for half time. Half-time: 1-0 to Baradene. The second half continued much like the first, with plenty of attempts at the opposition goal, but none connecting. Baradene showed a lot of confidence and skilled control of the ball with Avondale having plenty of opportunities to even up the score, but not quite getting there. A run-away from a quick 16 saw some good passing from the backs recycling the ball around to the forwards - but again not quite connecting to the back of the goal. Baradene scored their second goal. In the dying minutes, Baradene increased their pressure to try to secure a third goal but were denied any further. Final score: 2-0 to Baradene. Player of the Day was Manaia Raymond.

Premier 1 Netball: Had a strong win on Tuesday, beating St Dominic’s 47-36. Premier 2 Netball: Were far too strong for Lynfield, coming away with an impressive 41-15 win. Senior White Netball: Narrowly went down to Western Springs, 26-23 in a tight match. Senior Grey Netball: Lost to St Dominic’s 33-23. Senior Black Netball: Also went down to St Dominic’s on Tuesday, 33-11. Year 9 Black Netball: Went down to Waitakere 49-10, with Adele Tamua winning Player of the Day. Year 9 White Netball: Lost 21-10 to Rutherford. Year 9 Grey Netball: Had a 20-5 loss to Henderson. Player of the Day went to Eloise Marsh. Junior Premier Netball: Are still yet to be defeated, this time beating Kelston Girls 33-21. Le’Oxeayn Maiu’u won Player of the Day. Year 10 Black Netball: Defeated Massey 30-17, with Xila Kumar taking out the Player of the Day award. Year 10 White Netball: Couldn’t be separated from opponents St Dominic’s, with the game ending in a 19-19 draw. Luana Ngamotu was Player of the Day. Year 10 Grey Netball: Were far too strong for Henderson, beating them 29-6, with Chana Malungahu winning Player of the Day. Year 10 Silver Netball: Lost 37-6 to Sunderland.

1st XV: Coming off a loss the previous week, the 1st XV had a must win match at home against Papatoetoe. With it potentially being the last home game of the season, the Year 13 students were looking to finish off their rugby career at the school with a bang. The game started well with a good try to winger Ola Hoeft who got the home side out to a 5-0 lead. Papatoetoe scored next to regain the lead before Tafia Tofa dotted down to put Avondale back ahead 10-7. The next period of play was dominated by Papatoetoe who scored two converted tries to pull ahead 10-21, before flanker Ben Cameron scored to reduce the gap to 15-21 going into halftime. With a strong wind at their backs Avondale took control of the second half, with newly converted number 8 Adre Ravuvu scoring to make it 20-21. This score held for a long period of time before the guests scored out wide to extend their lead. A furious finish ensued, and lock TJ Mauga was able to crash over the line to give Avondale their fifth try of the game; however, the lack of a conversion still gave the visitors a one point advantage. With time ticking down, Avondale were awarded a penalty on the last play of the game which was converted by Isimase Tavae to give Avondale the win 28-26. The tight victory and bonus point keeps the playoff hopes alive, with a big match coming up this weekend against a strong Pukekohe side. 2nd XV: Struggled to get into their game against St Peter’s, going down 27-7. U70kg: Had a tight loss to Botany Downs, losing 7-0. U60kg: Travelled down to Pukekohe and came up short, losing 43-12. U15: Clashed with top of the table (and undefeated) Manurewa College. The boys fought hard for the full game but were edged out 24-19. Girls 10’s: Put in a good performance against Mt Roskill, coming away with a 17-17 draw in opposition territory on Monday night.

Premier Boys Squash: Defeated Auckland Grammar 7-6 on Wednesday to finish 3rd in their grade. The boys then travelled to Tauranga to compete in the NZSS Squash Championships. After a couple of close losses to much higher seeds, the boys managed to beat rivals St Peter’s, to finish a respectable 23rd out of 32 teams from across New Zealand. Senior B Boys Squash: Had a good 9-4 win over Howick College. Junior Boys Squash: Had a tense 2-2 draw with Rutherford on Monday. Girls A Squash: Eased past Epsom Girls 3-1 to book themselves a place in the final where they’ll take on Mt Albert Grammar. Girls B Squash: Won their semi-final, beating Rutherford on Monday.

We would like to draw your attention to an exciting opportunity to work with our students at our school camp, Taurewa, which is located beside the Tongariro National Park. Adult helpers are vital to the success of our Taurewa Camps, and we are currently looking for some more volunteers for upcoming trips! A reasonable level of fitness is required but no experience in the activities is necessary.
