Avondale College is holding our annual Open Evening from 4.00pm to 7.00pm on Wednesday 31 July. This is when parents of prospective students are invited to view our school. Timetabled classes will finish at 12.30pm, to allow preparations for the evening. At this time your child will be released from class to go home. Buses have been rescheduled and will run at this earlier time. After school detentions will run from 12.35pm. There will be supervision available in the library for students whose parents are unable to accommodate this earlier finishing time. There are a number of students involved in Open Evening activities and their support of Avondale College is much appreciated.

GATEWAY TO SUCCESS FOR AVCOL STUDENT
Signing up for the Avondale College Gateway work experience programme at the start of his Year 13 year has led to an exciting opportunity for Jeff Alosio Matiasi! The (now former) Avondale College prefect has accepted the offer of an apprenticeship with Datum Projects, who specialise in commercial, retail and hospitality industry fit-outs. As part of the Gateway programme, Jeff did work experience at Datum Projects one day a week for six weeks. It gave him the chance to immerse himself in the workshop environment and to see just what it would take to work in the building industry. Datum's Production Manager, Paul Rice, has taken on a number of Gateway students over the years, and says the programme works well for both parties. “Gateway is good because you can see if the fit is right – the trainee gets to see if they like the work environment that we’ve got, and it works the other way around as well – we can see if they are a good fit for us.” A positive experience for both parties led to Jeff being offered a joinery apprenticeship, which will see him undergo 5,000 hours of on-the-job training as well as annual block courses before the final qualifying exams. Typically it’s a three to three and a half year undertaking, and it’s one that Jeff is excited about. “It was a hard decision in some ways because I really loved school,” he says. “But this was such a great opportunity, and I had been really hoping I would get a job like this. I’m learning how to use the tools and how to make sure everything is perfect. I’m working with lovely people here, too.” Avondale College’s Gateway Coordinator Christine Boyle says Jeff is a real success story for the programme. “Gateway gives students a glimpse into the reality of the career they are thinking about,” she says. “We have students working in almost every industry, service and trade: teaching, nursing, hospitality, retail, engineering and more in fact, almost every career you can think of. In some cases the students realise the job they have been thinking about is actually not right for them, but in Jeff’s case, it was a great fit from the start. We are delighted for him."
GATEWAY 2020 Applications for Gateway in 2020 are now open. If you are currently in Year 11 or 12, working towards NCEA Levels 1 or 2, and are a NZ Citizen/Permanent Resident, then you are eligible to apply for the Gateway programme. The programme is designed to strengthen the pathway for students to progress from school to the workplace. Gateway offers you the chance to test drive your career choice, gain realistic work place experience as well NZQA credits, and has the potential to lead to on-going part time or full time work and apprenticeships. NCEA WORKSHOPS - WEST AUCKLAND Understanding the Changes to NCEA – MoE Workshops – August 2019 In May, the Minister of Education announced the changes to NCEA that will strengthen the qualification for all our young people. The Ministry of Education are running 26 regional hui that are open to anyone wanting to learn more about the changes: • What did we hear from New Zealanders last year that led to the changes? • Key things you need to know about the changes • How will the changes impact and benefit students, teachers and kaiako, parents and whānau, and the wider community? • When will the changes happen? >> Register now to an event in your region The workshops will run from 6.30-8.30pm and catering will be provided. All ages welcome. The seven changes are: 1. Make NCEA more accessible 2. Mana ōrite mō te mātauranga Māori 3. Strengthen literacy and numeracy requirements 4. Have fewer, larger standards 5. 12OED TRAILNAV CHALLENGE
SENIOR DEBATING THROUGH TO QUARTER FINAL
Riverhead Forest was the destination for our 12OED crew on Sunday, where they took part in the Lactic Turkey TrailNav Challenge. They spent many hours running around in the mud, through the cutty grass and streams to find small markers and earn points. There were mystery activities to gain extra points, which added great hillarity and focus. The Year 12s were split into teams to compete against 47 other teams in a three hour race. Our top team "3 Credits" came 16th. However, in their divisions of school teams we had three firsts, two seconds and a third; not bad for six teams! Thanks for the amazing commitment of staff, students and parents to make this day so fun and successful.
The Avondale College Senior One Debating Team, made up of Dylan Chand, Heather Wallace, Emily Callaghan, Nihar Trivedi, Munintra Kumar, Justin Lee and Siddharth Sheth, has made it to the quarter finals of the Auckland Schools Debating competition. They came second in the West Auckland Round Robin and defeated Pakuranga One last night in the Octo's at St Cuthberts in a close debate about whether or not striking would be an effective way to raise the pay of female athletes. The quarter finals take place on 13 August. We wish them the best of luck.

Senior A Girls Basketball: Won easily against Diocesan, 75-38. Senior A Boys Basketball: Won their second game in a row, beating Western Springs 88-69. Junior A Boys Basketball: Had a good win on Wednesday, beating Mt Roskill 42-31. Junior B Boys Basketball: Had a close loss in their final game of the season, going down 32-30 to Rutherford. U19 Boys Basketball: Won their semi-final against Liston, 45-44 in a shootout to secure a spot in the final. U17A Boys Basketball: Went down to Mt Albert Grammar, 51-29, U17B Boys Basketball: Defeated Lynfield in a hard-fought game, 43-37.

1st XI Girls Football: Went down 3-1 to Takapuna Grammar on Wednesday. 2nd XI Girls Football: Lost 4-1 to Henderson. 1st XI Boys Football: Got their season back on track with an awesome 4-1 win over Rangitoto. Junior Boys Football: Were held to a 3-3 draw by Mt Roskill on Saturday. 3rd XI Boys Football: Also had a draw, 1-1 against Mt Albert Grammar. Year 10 Boys Football: Proved too strong for One Tree Hill, winning 8-3.
HOCKEY
1st XI Boys Hockey: At the start of the game there were some beautifully deft, lofted balls lobbed by our Centre Half, Jappreet Kullar. However, we just couldn't quite catch these to put the opposition under pressure in their attacking circle. There were moments of amazing formation and great width - everything we have been working on during this year. Nevertheless, there was at times not enough patience in controlling possession and working the ball into the attacking circle. Westlake Boys 2nd XI got some lucky breaks with a couple of their goals, seeing a well worked goal nine minutes in and then followed by a lucky touch from a cracking hit two minutes later and a goal off a penalty corner five minutes later - this made it 3-nil at half-time. Player of the day - Hersh Patel - stepped up in the back role he has been playing for the last few games and was bravely covering two players at most times during the game. As a few players fell to injury, others stepped up and played in positions they had not trained for this year and did well to stem the tide of Westlake's attack. In the end though, it was a huge learning curve of a game, that saw us go down for the first time in this competition, losing 5-nil. We will see the character of the team now and how we respond to this in the coming weeks as we prepare for tournament week. 2nd XI Boys Hockey: Came up against top of the table Pakuranga on Wednesday. It was a close game and ended up as a 2-2 draw. 1st XI Girls Hockey: Had a 1-0 win over rivals Mt Albert Grammar on Thursday. Junior Girls Hockey: This was the first game back after July school holidays and the pace in the first half reflected the holiday mode. The girls were a little bit slow to get moving, but once the first goal was scored by Angelina Revell-Lewis, they began to dominate with possession and Angelina secured a second goal. An unfortunate mistake saw a penalty corner awarded to Epsom with a nail-bitingly close shot across the front of our goal - luckily for Avondale, it went wide. Avondale continued to show good defence. A penalty corner awarded to Avondale saw a third goal awarded through some incredible strategic passing between four of our players – and finished off by Tiana-Tai Leauga. Epsom tried relentlessly to regain control of the ball, but our Goalie, Nicole Venter, saved shot after shot to the goal. Drawing close to half time, Angelina shot in the fourth goal to Avondale. Half-time score: 4-0 to Avondale. At the start of the second half, a muddle up amongst our defensive line saw a goal awarded to Epsom. Avondale re-settled themselves after this, showed incredible skills with their passing and the attacking line. Several really good attempts at goal were just missed, but a penalty corner awarded to Avondale saw text-book results and Tiana-Tai scored the fifth goal for Avondale. Nicole continued to deny the opposition of any further goals, despite their repeated attacks in the last few minutes of play. Full-time score: 5-1 to Avondale. Player of the day was awarded to Tiana-Tai.

Premier Boys Squash: Fought hard with a man down against Auckland Grammar, but lost 9-6. Senior B Boys Squash: Came up against Macleans, who easily defeated us in their last game. The boys played hard, but ultimately lost a close one, 7-6. We wish our Premier Boys Squash Team all the very best as they head away to New Zealand Secondary Schools Squash Nationals in Tauranga tomorrow.

Senior Grey Netball: Went down 18-7 to Lynfield. Year 9 Black Netball: Narrowly beat Western Springs 29-25. Player of the Day went to Issys Tobia-Pita. Year 10 Grey Netball: Came up against Avondale’s Year 10 Silver team, and came away with a 17-6 win. Diana Fareni from the Grey team and Jacinta Peresa from Silver both won Player of the Day.

1st XV: Put their six game winning streak on the line when they took on Howick College. Too many handling errors put us under pressure, with Howick jumping out to a 7-0 lead at half time. The boys were unable to put any points on the board in the second half, and went down 13-0. The boys will be looking to get back on track on Saturday when they take on Papatoetoe here at Avondale. 2nd XV: Had their first loss of the season, going down 19-0 to De La Salle. U70kg: Lost to Rosehill 22-5. U60kg: Backed up their recent win against Auckland Grammar with a 17-12 win against Glendowie. U15: Had a strong win against Southern Cross, 20-10.

TAUREWA CAMP This week we have students from 10WLC & 10PTN enjoying the fresh mountain ambience of Tongaririo National Park. We look forward to their return with stories and photos to share. Trip Information We encourage families to make early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately six weeks before departure. Gear hire is during Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday lunch times. Students bringing their own gear for safety checking need to bring it to our office before students go to home room.

We would like to draw your attention to an exciting opportunity to work with our students at our school camp, Taurewa, which is located beside the Tongariro National Park. Adult helpers are vital to the success of our Taurewa Camps, and we are currently looking for some more volunteers for upcoming trips! A reasonable level of fitness is required but no experience in the activities is necessary.
