B AUCKLAND CENTRAL CALCEX 2019 WINNERS! This year we sent four Year 13 students to compete in the Auckland Central CALCEX competition at St Cuthbert's College. CALCEX is a Mathematics competition for Year 12 and Year 13 students who compete to answer a set of questions in the fastest time possible. The Avondale College students put in a fabulous performance getting a score of 50 points and winning the Auckland Central competition ahead of Epsom Girls and St Cuthbert's College who each gained 45 points. The students who took part are Shivam Desai, Tovey Lai, Varun Kandpal, and Albert Wang.

SCHOOL SHOW As the curtain fell on the closing night of In the Heights on Saturday, more than 120 student performers and crew took a well-earned bow! The five-night show week was a huge success, with high-energy performances, superb dance numbers and, as promised, a riveting storyline. Congratulations to all who worked so hard in the weeks and months leading up to show week - your efforts both on and off the stage were very well received! Particular thanks go to the key staff involved: Miss Schmidt (Choreographer), Mr Stenbo (Musical Director), Susan Elijas (Set Designer) and especially the Show Directors, Miss Jamaliette Tuiletufuga and Mr Nick Smit, who did such a fantastic job in pulling it all together to create an extremely memorable show for 2019!

Our Girls A Badminton team went down 4-1 to St Cuthbert’s on Friday night, however still sit 2nd on the table. With their last game being this Friday 27th September, the girls need the win to secure their second place standing as the season wraps up. They’ll be taking on Glendowie. The Boys A team remain 6th on the table, after a points' win over Onehunga after drawing 3-3. Boys B Badminton were narrowly defeated, losing on points after a 3-3 draw with Lynfield. The C Boys lost 6-0 to Mt Albert Grammar. Our Girls C team had a strong 5-1 win over One Tree Hill College.
ORIENTEERING
Liam Stolberger has placed 1st in the Senior Boys class of the 2019 Auckland Secondary Schools Rogaine. This backs up Liam’s 12th place finish at nationals this year. An outstanding result which only adds to his impressive form across 2019 – well done Liam.

AUCKLAND REGIONAL ACCOUNTING PURSUITS COMPETITION
SPECIAL FAREWELL: MR STENBO
Our hearty congratulations to our team of Year 13 Accounting students who took part in the Auckland Regional Accounting Pursuits' Competition organised by the New Zealand Commerce and Economics Teachers' Association at the University of Auckland on Thursday 19th September. This is a prestigious and challenging event, with many Auckland schools competing at a high level. Our team showed superb effort and focus and finished in second place overall. Team members were Nilotri Das, Xinyue Zhan, Mohammad Al-A’Raj and Navdeep Panwar. We are very proud of their success. Congratulations!
At the end of this term we farewell Mathew Stenbo, our highly regarded Director of Music. Mr Stenbo has been an integral member of our high performing Music Department for 11 years. Over that time he has been Head of Jazz, successfully led many of our Classical music groups and has been Musical Director of our annual show. He has led multi-award winning music groups, and has toured with numerous Avondale College performance ensembles both in New Zealand and overseas. Mr Stenbo was also a member of the team of teachers who established the Music strands of our Performing Arts Academy, which has provided high quality performance opportunities to hundreds of students since its inception. His reputation goes far beyond our walls, and he is an educator, adjudicator, musician and conductor at regional and national levels. We wish Mr Stenbo all the very best as he moves to Wellington, and takes up a role with the Ministry of Education.
MOTUTAPU TREE PLANTING A group of 22 Avondale Students joined the Motutapu Restoration Trust on Sunday 22nd September to help plant 1200 native trees on a beautiful Spring day. The students were from the AVCOL Environmental Group and had raised money earlier in the year during the annual SEAWEEK activities at school to subsidise the trip. Mr Stephen , Miss Lane, Mrs Selvarajah, Mr White and Mrs Lamb also participated. This is the third time the group have planted trees on the Island. It was a wonderful opportunity to see those areas previously visited continuing to thrive and witness the introduction native species of birds and insects.

ROTARY AWARDS 2019 The Bill Rodwell Rotary Award is to assist senior students to further their education at Avondale College. It is awarded to Year 11 or Year 12 students who have been fully involved in school activities, who have done well academically and intend to return to school for one or two years of further study. Family financial circumstances are taken into consideration. Application forms can be obtained from the main office or the Careers Department. 13OED TRAMP The Year 13 Outdoor Education class went on a three day expedition in the Karangahake Gorge last week. The students learnt about planning every part of a trip, staying safe, dealing with emergency situations, working together as a group and carry all of their supplies with them. The weather was great and everyone was successful in the challenge of completing the tramp.

NIU CAREERS TRIP 2019 On-Campus Experience for our Year 13 NIU Pacific Mentoring Group, was on Wednesday 18 September at the Fale Pasifika, at the University of Auckland. The mentoring programme, organised with our School Careers Dept, started in May this year, and the students have attended after-school sessions and had two on-campus days to learn more about studying at University. This last day focused on 'Next Steps' and Support at the University for NIU students from all the Auckland Schools that are part of the programme.

TAUREWA CAMP Trip 15 had an awesome week with perfect weather to show off our mountains to the International students at Taurewa last week. The best day of the season so far on the slopes invited us to Snowboard and Ski for the whole day at Turoa. Mountain Biking, Rock Climbing and a stream walk were also highlights of the trip. Waitomo Caves and the Otorohanga Kiwi house gave them a New Zealand taster of what Aotearoa is all about. Trip Information We encourage families to make early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately six weeks before departure.
TAUREWA ADULT HELPERS NEEDED! We would like to draw your attention to an exciting opportunity to work with our students at our school camp, Taurewa, which is located beside the Tongariro National Park. Adult helpers are vital to the success of our Taurewa Camps, and we are currently looking for some more volunteers for upcoming trips! A reasonable level of fitness is required but no experience in the activities is necessary. Each camp is five days long and includes the following activities based around Tongariro National Park: • Year 10s: Kayaking, day tramps, hot pools, low ropes course and more! • Internationals: Overnight tramping, caving, skiing and more!
