ASPIRE MUSIC FESTIVAL 2019
MICROSOFT WORLD CHAMPS We wish our national champions all the best as they head off to New York to compete in the Microsoft Office Specialist World Championships this week!
Big Band Avondale College's music tour arrived back in New Zealand late last night with three trophies in their suitcases, following a hugely successful time at the Aspire International Youth Music Festival in the Gold Coast in the final week of the holidays! Our Symphony Orchestra won first place; the String Ensemble, second; and our Big Band third place in their respective competitions, which involved schools from all over Australasia. In addition to their adjudicated performances, our groups also performed at a series of public events in malls, shopping centres, and under the stars at the Kurrawa Surf Club. Students also took part in workshops and masterclasses where they received valuable feedback and specialist tuition from industry professionals. Having won the orchestral section, our Symphony Orchestra were also invited to perform at the festival's concluding Gala Concert at the Star Gold Coast's theatre, where our students wowed the audience with their performance of Beethoven's Symphony No 1, Brahms's Hungarian Dance, and a special performance of Puccini's O Mio Babbino Caro, featuring soprano Delores Lesatele. Once the hard work and intensity of the festival was over, the students thoroughly enjoyed two days of sightseeing, which included trips to Surfers' Paradise, the Currumbin Animal Sanctuary, and Movie World. Many thanks to all the staff involved, and particularly to Mr Stenbo and Mr Robinson, whose expertise and hard work in the rehearsals leading up to the festival was evident in the students' performances, both on and off the stage.

SPAIN TRIP Our Spanish tourists had a great time soaking up the sights - and tastes - of Spain on their trip! Some highlights included a visit to the Royal Palace (Real Alcazar) in Seville (pictured below), and an Andalusian cooking workshop!
NZ YOUTH SYMPHONIC WINDS A successful audition with her French horn for the New Zealand Youth Symphonic Winds concert band saw Mereem Dewerse (Year 11) represent Avondale College at the NZYSW's annual performance event in Christchurch during the holidays. NZYSW, in its sixth year, is the leading concert band for musicians aged under 25. Mereem joined them in Christchurch for intense rehearsals and three concerts, including one begun by flashmobbing the Christchurch Public Library with 'Happy.' Mereem says she found the experience really inspiring and would encourage other Avondale College musicians to consider auditioning for this amazing group next year!

SPORTS REPORT Monday 1st July – Sunday 7th July
BADMINTON
Girls A Badminton: Defeated ACG Parnell, 6-0. Girls B Badminton: Beat Auckland Grammar 6-0 in a great match. Girls C Badminton: Lost 5-1 to St Cuthbert’s on Monday. Boys A Badminton: Beat Auckland Grammar, 3-1. Boys B Badminton: Had a 4-2 win against Mt Albert Grammar.
BASKETBALL
Senior A Girls Basketball: Had another great win, beating Birkenhead 97-75. They then took on top-of-the-table Epsom Girls, looking for the upset win. Avondale had the lead with 13 seconds to go, however, Epsom Girls tied it up and sent the game to overtime, where they pulled away and took a 61-56 win. Senior A Boys Basketball: Lost to Long Bay 93-78. The boys then went up against St Peter’s, and won 76-66. Junior A Boys Basketball: Defeated Mt Albert Grammar 34-27 in a close match. Junior B Boys Basketball: Went down 48-24 to Waitakere. U19 Boys Basketball: Had a great win on Wednesday, beating Marcellin 50-41. U17A Boys Basketball: Lost to Liston, 74-64. U17B Boys Basketball: Narrowly lost to Western Springs, 35-32 on Thursday.
FOOTBALL
1st XI Girls Football: Unfortunately had a 3-0 loss against Rangitoto. This result means the girls will be relegated to the division below. 2nd XI Girls Football: Lost 7-0 against Lynfield on Wednesday.
two hacking tackles that were not picked up, which only made him more determined, continuing into the circle and smashing the ball between the goalie’s legs from the edge of the circle; a glorious and satisfying goal that took us into the lead, 2-0. Our defenders, including Dan Parkinson and Japreet Kullar, did us proud - keeping out two penalty corners in the final quarter. Then suddenly a long ball against the run of play saw a quick goal against and AGS were back in the game at 2-1. A final burst from Paul Hunt and Shoma down the right side continued to frustrate the opposition, and the game ended in a hard fought and well deserved win for our boys. 1st XI Girls Hockey: Were looking to get their second win of the season when they took on Marist on Thursday. The girls were far too strong in the end, winning 5-0 to move them up the table. Junior Girls Hockey: Starting off on the back foot, Avondale could only field a team of ten due to illnesses and outside commitments by some of our players. The first half saw Macleans absolutely hammering away at our defensive lines, with our incredible goalie, Nicole Venter, working hard the entire time. Urvi Patel was absolutely pivotal in clearing away shots if they came close. It was certainly a nerve-wreaking half! Alice Duckworth took a nice runaway ball down the side line to the front of the opposition goal, and Angelina took aim, but narrowly missed, sending the ball wide. By half-time, the scoreboard remained empty: 0-0. The second half continued to see intense action, with our Avondale girls using speed as much as they could, given no subs being available. Our speed work was noticeable by the opposition. Whenever there was a runaway ball, our attacking team sprinted to it, making Macleans clearly nervous. However, Macleans managed to get through our defensive line and our goalie to secure their first goal. Play continued and our girls worked hard to try to even up the score, but the game ended 0-1. Players of the day: Urvi (defensive) and Alice (attacking).
Junior Girls Football: Had their final game of the term in the 7th/8th place playoff against Diocesan. Having yet to get a win, the girls were hungry to get over the mark. As the final whistle sounded, the scores were locked at 2-2, forcing the game into penalties. The girls stepped up and came away with a 4-3 penalty shootout victory to finish in 7th place.
LACROSSE
1st XI Boys Football: Lost 7-3 to Takapuna Grammar.
MUAY THAI
Year 9 Boys Football: Came up against Mt Albert Grammar in a midweek fixture for the Knockout Cup. The boys started strongly, however, a couple of late goals conceded saw the boys lose 4-2.
HOCKEY
1st XI Boys Hockey: Bracing ourselves for a competitive encounter against AGS, we started out in full attack mode. Shoma Hirota was strong in the halves and copped a shoulder charge, which gave the opposition player a rest in the bin for 10 minutes. A fast and competitive first half saw us unable to capitalise despite the extra player on the pitch, and the first half ended in a 0-0 draw. Confident we could pull this one off, soon after half time we reversed the frustrating pattern of games past to score ourselves, using the lethal combination of Alex Stenberg and Lewis Rose and their 1-2-1 of a penalty corner.
Premier Lacrosse: Came up short in their 3rd/4th place playoff, losing to Mt Roskill 18-7. Senior B Lacrosse: Lost to Westlake Girls 17-0. Well done to the following boys who have been selected for the New Zealand Black Gloves team who will play at the IFMA World Championships: Hadyn Jones, Wilfrid Hansen, and Martin Khanaphat.
NETBALL
Premier 1 Netball: Lost a nail-biting game to Massey, 24-23 on Tuesday. Senior Black Netball: also lost to Massey, 38-10. Senior White Netball: Lost 18-12 to Henderson. Senior Grey Netball: Prevailed in a close match against Waitakere, winning 17-14.
RUGBY
Angel Taulapapa-Sopoaga has been selected for the Auckland U16 Girls rugby team.
Ritesh Hanmenthu is having an outstanding season in goal and developing his skills with every outing. This game was no exception, with a great save from their penalty corner. Alex then crashed through
Girls 10s Rugby: Lost to Howick 59-15 in the last week of Term 2.
