There is a report evening planned for parents to meet with the teachers to discuss the report. This will be held in the Atrium on Tuesday 2 July between 4:30pm and 7:30pm. Please note that online booking of interviews through the Family Connection are now available and will close on Sunday 30 June. From 1 July, appointments will be filled in manually with the appointment form posted out with the report. Once reports have been posted out, they will be available for viewing online through Family Connection / Student Information / Documents.

National Champions: Mohanshu Vaidya, Ed Allison, Sebastian Thomas, Aiden Wachter and Vishva Dave with CEO of NZIQ, Jonathan Jansen New Zealand's Microsoft Office Specialist's National Champions have just been announced - and five are from Avondale College! They will now travel as part of the New Zealand team to compete in the world championships, in New York City, at the end of July. The qualification of these students is an outcome of months of learning, training and practice, along with success in school and regional competitions. The MOS World Championships receives around 1.3 million entries globally. About 150 university and school students will compete in the USA, representing over 50 countries.

CLASSICAL CONCERT Well over 100 students stepped onto the stage to perform as part of Avondale College's Classical Concert on Thursday evening. The event was the culmination of months of hard work by students and staff, and gave everyone the opportunity to develop their ensemble and performance skills. It was excellent to see the emerging talent on stage, as well as the more experienced musicians. Highlights of the evening included the Premiere String Ensemble's performance of Shine You No More; and our Gospel Choir's moving rendition of Andrea Klouse's Benedictus. The Symphony Orchestra also provided another significant moment with their world-premiere performance of Hithaeglir: The Misty Mountains. The Wellington-based composer of this piece, Andrew Stopps, was able to join us to hear this performance, which was wonderful. The evocative piece had rich textures representing the mountains of the North Island's central plateau, and had been specially chosen by Mr Stenbo, our Director of Music and conductor of the Symphony Orchestra for his 60-strong group.
NGA MANU KORERO SPEECH COMPETITION

The Ngā Manu Kōrero speech competition encourages the rangatahi of today to voice their opinions on matters that are affecting our culture and world. This year the competition was held at Orakei Marae and Avondale College was one of only four mainstream schools to enter. Proudly representing the College were two of our students: Olivia Mallon (Year 12) and Georgia Mitchell (Year 10). Georgia's topic was 'My culture is more than a performance,' and Olivia's was, 'I tried to keep quiet but my ancestors wouldn’t let me.' Olivia also gave an impromptu speech, rising superbly to the challenge of thinking (and speaking!) on her feet. The girls both did a wonderful job and received warm feedback for their presentations. This was a memorable experience, and we look forward to encouraging more students to participate in this event in 2020. - Ms N Howell, HOD Te Reo Māori

PATHWAYS PLANNING Wednesday 24 July 3.30 - 6.30pm in the Theatre Drop in at any time during the evening. Parents and caregivers are invited to attend with their children to discuss subject choices for 2020. Careers staff and each school department will be present with displays and to answer any questions you have. Liaison officers from most universities, polytechnics, private providers and the armed forces will be present, to ensure your child selects the right subjects for their future and can start planning NOW. TREE PLANTING On Wednesday 19 July the two Horticulture classes went to Matakana to plant the manuka, cabbage tree and flax seedlings that they have grown at Avondale College. Despite a very cold wind in the morning, the 39 students and three teachers energetically planted 565 trees. The planting is part of the Trees for Survival programme. We are helping New Zealand plant one billion trees in the next ten years to try to become carbon neutral by 2050. The students really enjoyed the day and, though they felt tired at the end of it, they realised they had done something significant to help our country counter global warming, reforest the land, feed bees and help produce manuka honey. It was a very productive day indeed!
DAITO BUNKA HIGH SCHOOL EXCHANGE 2020 Planning is underway for the proposed biennial exchange with Daito Bunka Dai Ichi High School. The April exchange provides students with a two week experience where they are hosted by a Japanese family. Students also tour the Kansai region visiting the historic cities of Kyoto and Ngara along with Hiroshima to see a variety of sight-seeing attractions. Whilst in Tokyo the students will attend Daito Bunka Dai Ichi High School with their homestay student. There is the opportunity to visit some of the many sights that Tokyo has to offer including Disneyland. PERFORMING ARTS ACADEMY EVENING The Performing Arts Academy provided a wonderful evening of entertainment in their mid-year performance evening last night. A large and receptive audience enjoyed the performances from the students in the four strands of Jazz and Classical Music, Drama and Dance. The evening involved more than 100 students, who are to be congratulated for their professionalism and enthusiasm. Congratulations also to their teachers who work so hard in the early morning Academy sessions to provide specialist tuition in these aspects of the performing arts.

MATARIKI CELEBRATIONS Students and staff had the opportunity to mark Matariki - the MÄ ori New Year - with special flax weaving sessions held in the Whare at lunchtimes last week. As well as learning how to make flowers, mats and other items, the participants enjoyed the opportunity to chat around the table together - marking the start of the New Year by reflecting on the past, celebrating the present, and planning for the future.

The girls picked up their third straight win on Monday night, defeating St Kentigern 91-49. They then took on Baradene on Friday, but unfortunately went down 77-46. Junior Girls Basketball: Faced off with Waitakere College on Thursday night. The girls struggled to get into the game and ultimately went down 39-12. Senior A Boys Basketball: Lost to Massey on Monday, 108-87 and to Northcote on Friday, 90-72. Junior A Boys Basketball: Had a heart-breaking loss to Mt Albert Grammar on Wednesday. With the scores locked at 28-28 as the final buzzer sounded, the boys lost a free throw shootout, going down 29-28. Junior B Boys Basketball: Lost 68-18 to Kelston Boys. U17A Boys Basketball: Came up against a very strong Auckland Grammar side, and lost 43-22. U17B Boys Basketball: Played competition leaders Mt Albert Grammar on Thursday. The boys kept it close but went down 37-27 in the end. U19 Boys Basketball: Got their first win of the season on Wednesday night, when they defeated Rutherford 42-37.

1st XI Girls Football: Lost 6-0 to Baradene on Wednesday. 2nd XI Girls Football: Also had a 6-0 loss, this time to Waitakere College Junior Girls Football: Went down 4-0 to Epsom Girls. 1st XI Boys Football: Lost 6-2 to Selwyn on Friday night. Junior Boys Football: Lost to Green Bay 4-0 on Saturday. Year 10 Boys Football: Lost their second game of the season on Saturday, 3-1 to Auckland Grammar. Year 9 Boys Football: Went down 3-0 to Mt Albert Grammar on the weekend. 3rd XI Boys Football: Had their undefeated streak snapped by Rutherford over the weekend, losing 2-0.

Ayub Sayid won the U16 Boys 2km Cross Country Grand Prix over the weekend. This was an awesome result for Ayub, who is still new to the sport. Wiremu Ngamotu also had a great race, coming second in the U14 Boys 2km Cross Country Grand Prix. Ayub has also been scouted and picked up by a distance running training squad, who have begun training for the NZSS nationals taking place at the end of the year. Well done, Ayub.
1st XI Boys Hockey: Faced off in a local derby with Mt Albert Grammar on Wednesday night. The boys fought hard but went down 3-1. 2nd XI Boys Hockey: Had a strong 5-0 win against Western Springs on Wednesday. 1st XI Girls Hockey: Drew 3-3 with Howick College on Thursday. Junior Girls Hockey: The girls faced the leaders on the points table – Diocesan. However, the slight disadvantage of having no goalie this week didn't dampen their spirit. The first half showed Avondale in possession of the ball, with a couple of solid attempts at the goal. Seolina Cho really stepped up her game this week and showed pressure and determination in her attacks on the ball. By half-time, the score remained 0-0. In the second half, Diocesan came out swinging and a determined attack on our goal looked set to hit the back board if given a good push out the front of our goal. However, as one of their players attempted to strike, she inadvertently hooked it out of the way of the goal, sparing Avondale an easy goal against them. The near miss encouraged Avondale to lift their game further, and we returned the favour with more solid attacks on the opposition’s goal. The Diocesan goalie did a great job of deflecting attack after attack from our striking line. Second half saw Moe increasing her speed and pushing the ball into gaps to open up the play, and Alisi Pole running solidly in defence position to help keep the opposition scoreless. However, as the girls

began to tire, a rare opening in our defensive line saw Diocesan sneak in a goal, taking advantage of our missing goalie. Full time score: 1-0 to Diocesan. Player of the day went to Seolina. This was a fantastic game by our U15 girls. They should be very proud of their determined effort.
LACROSSE
Premier Lacrosse: Traded points back and forth with top-of-the-table, Epsom Girls. However, EGGS managed to score a few goals in a row towards the end of the game to take the win, 14-8. Senior B Lacrosse: Lost 21-0 to Western Springs.
NETBALL
Premier 1 Netball: Put in a strong performance against Lynfield, winning 37-29 on Tuesday. Premier 2 Netball: Had a hard fought 30-26 win against Waitakere College’s Premier team. Senior Black Netball: Lost 39-20 to Green Bay. Senior Grey Netball: Won a close match against Green Bay, 17-15. Junior Premier Netball: Remain unbeaten in their competition this year, after outclassing Western Springs by an outstanding 53 points. They won the game 65-12. Hosana Alefosio was named Player of the Day. Year 9 Black Netball: Had a good win again St Dominic's, 34-26 Year 9 White Netball: Won against St Dominic’s, 14-6. Year 9 Grey: Bye Year 10 Black: Had an impressive 33-16 win over Lynfield College on Saturday. Player of the Day went to Melina Tafili. Year 10 White: Had a tough loss to Massey, 27-19. Well done to Situ Afemata for winning Player of the Day. Year 10 Grey: Were far too good for St Dominic’s, winning 32-7. A solid performance from Ashley Horobin saw her win Player of the Day. Year 10 Silver: Had a great win against Lynfield, 16-4. Chaneiri Fernando picked up Player of the Day.

Liam Stolberger has been named to represent New Zealand in the Australian Schools Championships as well as the Oceania Championships, which will take place over the September school holidays. 1st XV Rugby: The Avondale 1st XV played at Edgewater College on the weekend, looking to win their 5th straight game. The first half was filled with infringements and we struggled to get into a rhythm. Avondale took a 15-5 lead into half time on the back of tries to Jordan Tone and a double from Ola Hoeft. After some slight halftime adjustments Avondale scored a further four tries in the second half, with the backs finishing off some good work from the forwards. Tafia Tofa, Isireli Senibulu, Isimase Tavae and Ola Hoeft scored tries, with Ola completing a hat trick. The final score was 41-10 to Avondale, who will be looking to finish the term with a win next weekend to be in the top end of the table. 2nd XV Rugby: Remain unbeaten in their competition, beating Waitakere College 29-12 on Saturday. The boys sit top of the table and are looking strong. U70kg Rugby: Went down 42-14 to Rosmini. U60kg Rugby: Had another heart-breaking loss on Saturday, falling short against Rosehill 22-17. U15 Rugby: Lost their second game in a row on Saturday, to Onehunga, 15-5. Girls 10s Rugby: Lost their second game in a row when they took on Auckland Girls on Monday. The girls fought hard but went down 26-21.

SQUASH
On Tuesday 18 and Wednesday 19 June the Squash A Girls travelled Unitec to take part in the AKKS Squash Championships. Adelia Roesli, Sophie Rose, Shirley Chen (captain), Dahlia Feng and Ally Tang were looking forward to this competition, especially as they hadn't lost a single game this season so far. However, the first opponent, Westlake Girls 2, was tough to play, and the girls lost 1-4. After a weak start the five players managed to turn things around and defeated Orewa 3-2. In the final game of the day, they won against Westlake Girls 3, 5-0, and were now third on the table. The first game on Wednesday proved to be difficult again as the girls lost 4-1 to Mount Albert Grammar. Nevertheless, the five showed tenacity and won their last game against Western Springs, 5-0. This means they came third overall and won bronze medals. Well done, girls! Girls A Squash: Had a good 4-0 win on Monday against Pukekohe. Girls B Squash: Won 3-1 against Orewa. Junior Boys Squash: Kept Rutherford scoreless in their 4-0 win on Monday.

TAUREWA CAMP Term 2 camps are done and dusted and we are looking forward to hitting the ski slopes in Term 3! Education outside of the classroom has given our students a huge range of new experiences, including making new friendships, defeating challenges, team building, personal growth, and development of compassion and integrity. Make sure you sign up and create amazing memories! ‘I really enjoyed camp. I didn’t know anybody but now I have new friends and can’t wait for the next camp.’ ‘We went on the stream walk and the water felt like ice!’ ‘Thank goodness we had thermals, it was freezing.’ ‘New Zealand is beautiful.’ We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to remind their parents when they know their camp is coming up!

We would like to draw your attention to an exciting opportunity to work with our students at our school camp, Taurewa, which is located beside the Tongariro National Park. Adult helpers are vital to the success of our Taurewa Camps, and we are currently looking for some more TRIP DATES YEAR LEVEL ADULT HELPERS volunteers for upcoming trips! STILL NEEDED A reasonable level of fitness is 29 Jul - 02 Aug 10WLC $410 Tue 2 Jul required but no experience in the activities is necessary. 10PTN Each camp is five days long and 05 – 09 Aug 10FRA $410 Tue 23 Jul 2 includes the following activities 10GTH based around Tongariro National Park: 19 - 23 Aug 10EVS $410 Tue 6 Aug • Year 10s: Kayaking, day tramps, 10GDE hot pools, low ropes course and 10MLL more! • Internationals: Overnight 26 – 30 Aug 10KMA $410 Tue 13 Aug 1 tramping, caving, skiing and 10JWA more! 10APN All trip costs are covered and adults can hire any clothing or 16 – 20 Sep Internationals $500 Tue 3 Sept 2 equipment from the Taurewa TRIP DATES YEAR LEVEL ADULT HELPERS Office at no cost.
