Avondale College's Chess team won the West Auckland Secondary Interschool Chess Championships on Thursday 13 June! The four-member team consisted of Rishit Patel (playing on board one), Xin-Yang Liu (board two), Rohit Mudaliar (board three) and Jivitesh Khullar (board four). In addition to their gold championship medals, Jivitesh and Xin-Yang also received medals for winning all their games and placing first on their respective boards! The team are now preparing for the New Zealand interschool finals, where they will represent West Auckland - we wish them well!

GEOGRAPHY FIELD TRIP Geography is a subject that considers location - where you are - and builds from there. Standing on Muriwai beach on the wild west coast with six foot swells certainly catches students' attention and leads them to wonder, 'how does this all work?' Thursday saw the second of two Year 13 Geography field trips to Muriwai Beach where students completed a research project to compare two beaches before taking a walk across the headland.

A blizzard of students hit the beach; throwing oranges to measure long shore drift, measuring sand in the wind, trying to figure out how to use a clinometer, and looking at each other's tangled hair to figure out which direction the wind was blowing. As a teacher it was hugely encouraging to watch students encounter moments when things didn't go as planned, before watching that 'ah-ha' moment when they figured out why!

After much excitement and hundreds of selfies, wearied students climbed aboard buses to return home, tired, but more aware of the world around them and the land beneath their feet.

BRIDGE BUILDING The Maths Department's annual Bridge Building Competition took place in the Theatre yesterday, with 114 Year 9 and 10 students taking up the challenge to create the strongest bridge possible to span a 30cm gap using just bamboo skewers, ice block sticks, glue and string!

The morning session was put aside for planning and design. After taking inspiration from the Australian Lego Masters, the students went to work on some intricate and quite complex designs! There was plenty of engineering prowess on display, with designs for suspension bridges, triangular pyramids and everything else you could think of! The students were constantly reminded that they would have under two hours in the afternoon session to complete the build itself, and to check that they actually had enough of the materials to complete their chosen design…

The afternoon began with a hushed excitement as the teams began their attempts to bring their designs to life. It was soon apparent that many of them had bitten off more than they could chew as designs and plans went out the window and panicked construction of something resembling a bridge commenced! By the time the final whistle rang, all 38 teams had something to show for their efforts; we wait to see just how sturdy they are next week!

The day was a fantastic display of Avondale College at its best, with 114 students all giving 100% to the task, showing incredible creativity and resourcefulness to achieve the best they could. The atmosphere was fantastic and everybody had a great time.

We will test the bridges to destruction next week to see who will go on to represent Avondale College at the Aurecon Bridge Building Competition in early September.

12OED MOUNTAIN BIKING WOODHILL FOREST 12OED headed out to Woodhill Forest on Wednesday 12 June for a taster session on the mountain bikes. There were uphills, downhills, puffing and panting, tree roots and big drops, screaming and yahooing. The rain came down but nobody cared. We spent time looking at the risks in mountain biking and made good progress towards our Achievement Standards. A fun time was had by all, and we cannot wait for our next adventure into the wilderness.

DAITO BUNKA HIGH SCHOOL EXCHANGE 2020 Planning is underway for the proposed biennial exchange with Daito Bunka Dai Ichi High School.

The April exchange provides students with a two week experience where they are hosted by a Japanese family. Students also tour the Kansai region visiting the historic cities of Kyoto and Ngara along with Hiroshima to see a variety of sight-seeing attractions.

Whilst in Tokyo the students will attend Daito Bunka Dai Ichi High School with their homestay student. There is the opportunity to visit some of the many sights that Tokyo has to offer including Disneyland. Information on the proposed 2020 tour is available from Mr Bennett’s office and there is a tour meeting at 6pm in the College staff room on Monday 24 June to find out further details.

BADMINTON

Girls A Badminton: Continue to get good results, this time beating ACG Parnell 6-0 on Friday.

Girls B Badminton: Had a great win on Monday, beating ACG Parnell, 4-2.

Girls C Badminton: Lost to Onehunga, 5-1.

Boys A Badminton: Had a tough game against a strong Auckland Grammar team, losing 5-1.

Boys C Badminton: Took on St Peter’s but lost, 6-0.

CROSS COUNTRY

Kimberley May competed in the New Zealand Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships over the weekend, held in Timaru. She placed 21st out of 113 Senior Girls who competed, which was by far the biggest group at the competition.

Senior A Girls Basketball: Had a great win on Friday night, defeating Mt Roskill, 49-36.

Junior Girls Basketball: Fell short against Rutherford, losing 33-10 on Thursday.

Senior A Boys Basketball: Came up against Mt Roskill which proved to be a tough game. The boys were narrowly defeated, 72-71.

Junior A Boys Basketball: Picked up a win against Mt Roskill, 34-22 on Wednesday.

Junior B Boys Basketball: Went down 42-33 to Rutherford.

U17B Boys Basketball: Lost to Green Bay 3121 on Thursday.

Javiyah Nikoia placed 1st for the Age Group Platform at the Auckland Diving Regionals.

He also placed 2nd for Senior Boys at the Secondary Schools Diving Championships.

FOOTBALL

1st XI Girls Football: Had a tough game against Epsom Girls on Monday, going down 6-0. They then faced off with Westlake Girls on Wednesday. Despite a goal from Maclani Michael, the girls went down 2-1.

2nd XI Girls Football: Continue to perform well in their competition, defeating Green Bay 4-1 on Wednesday night. The girls have now jumped up to 2nd on the table.

Junior Girls Football: Faced off against Baradene and lost 3-1. They then took on topof-the-table Westlake Girls on Wednesday.

Despite a valiant effort from the girls, they went down 2-0.

1st XI Boys Football: Went down 5-2 to Northcote College on Saturday.

Junior Boys Football: Came up against our rivals, Kelston Boys, on Saturday. The boys had a great performance and came away with a 4-1 win.

Year 10 Boys Football: Had an outstanding 4-0 win against Mt Albert Grammar on Saturday.

Year 9 Boys Football: Beat Sacred Heart 3-2.

Junior Boys: Beat Kelston Boys 4-1.

HOCKEY

1st XI Boys Hockey: Our game was against Long Bay College 1st XI boys. Travelling to the Shore the coach was a little apprehensive, thinking, “how will our team dynamics hold up against relatively unknown competitors?” and, “I hope the traffic is not going to be an issue.” Well, as smooth as the drive over to North Harbour Hockey Stadium was, so too was our actual game. It had patches of free flowing progress, then at other times, stymied forward movement; but we got there in the end! We scored two beautiful goals in the first half by Captain Lewis Rose after some deft runs into the attacking circle, making it 2-0 at half-time. However, again, a minute into the second half (with a few positional changes), saw us lose concentration and we let our opposition's forward three get into our defensive circle to pull a goal back: 2-1.

There were some break away plays from our opponents, but our lads held them out with some great cover defence from Vice-Captain, Jappreet Kullar, Hersh Patel, Liam Law-

Telea and Daniel Parkinson. We had a few attacking penalty corners and some goals go begging, but 20 minutes into the second half we slotted our third and final goal with a brilliant PC angled deflection by Abhishek Lal: 3-1! This was a solid win by the team and a deserved win at that. Well done!

1st XI Girls Hockey: Came up against Mt Roskill on Thursday, however went down 2-0.

Junior Girls Hockey: Perfectly cool conditions for the U15 Girls hockey game at Kolmar against Glendowie. The team were light on subs this week, but their spirit was strong regardless. The first half saw Glendowie come out strong with some targeted attacks at the goal. However, some superb deflections from Nicole Venter, team goalie, ensured they remained goalless despite their efforts.

Our team returned the attacks on Glendowie with some really good attempts at the goal.

However, both teams showed great defensive skills and both goalies were working hard to keep the score board nil-all at half time.

Once the whistle blew for the start of second half, both sides showed renewed energy and vigour and the pace increased accordingly. Amelia Hurrell in the right half position showed fantastic ball skill and speed throughout the game, and Nicole continued to deny the opposition of any points.

Ten minutes into the second half, Manaia Raymond in the right back position, was busy defending attack after attack from Glendowie and during a particularly strong attempt from them to break through our defensive line, fell and sustained a huge graze from the turf. As Manaia was being bandaged up, Angelina Revell-Lewis, in the right wing position, saw an opening and took a huge swing at the ball which secured itself to the back of the goal, taking Avondale into the lead. Play continued and it was clear to see the both sides were beginning to tire. Glendowie were relentless still in their attempt to draw the score, however were not able to do so.

Full time score: 1-0 to Avondale, a fantastic win for the girls. Amelia received the Player of the Day honours.

Premier 2 Netball: Had a narrow win against Waitakere, 33-27. Player of the Day went to April Taito.

Senior Black Netball: Had two games this week. Firstly they took on St Dominic’s, and went down 42-16. They then played a rescheduled game against Rutherford on Thursday and lost 35-9.

Senior White Netball: Lost 34-11 to Western Springs.

Senior Grey: Had a nail biting win over Henderson, 15-14 on Tuesday.

Junior Premier Netball: Continue their strong form, this time beating Massey 40-14. Idra Gill was Player of the Day. Year 9 Black Netball: Also defeated Massey, winning 35-17. Olivia Lyon was Player of the Day.

Year 9 White Netball: Lost 38-15 to Henderson.

Player of the Day went to Fala Mesui.

Year 9 Grey: Came out on top in a hard fought game against Waitakere, winning 15-8. Well done to Elle Preston for winning Player of the Day. Year 10 Black: Went down 28-19 to Green Bay. Player of the Day was Charlize Cleere.

Year 10 White: Defeated ACG Sunderland 2813 on Saturday. Ashley Chew won Player of the Day. Year 10 Grey: Had a tough loss to Western Springs, 28-12. Catherine Tone was Player of the Day. Year 10 Silver: Dominated Rutherford from start to finish, winning 24-4. Daisy Meder won Player of the Day.

LACROSSE

Premier Lacrosse: Continue to search for their first win of the season, going down 13-6 to Mt Roskill on Thursday.

Senior B Lacrosse: Also lost to St Mary’s, 18-1.

NETBALL

Premier 1 Netball: Took on Kelston Girls and came away with a 30 point win, 48-18. Taylor Ensor was Player of the Day.

RUGBY

1st XV Rugby: Came up against Marcellin here at Avondale. The boys were looking to back up last week’s result with another win. It took us a while to get into the game, and we found ourselves down at halftime. Shortly after, Marcellin scored, and their lead stretched out to 15-5. This lit a spark in the team, and we hit back with a few quick tries to make it a 19-15 lead heading into crunch time. Another try was scored shortly after, pushing us out to a 24-15 lead with not long to go. Marcellin hit back with an unconverted try, and we were up 24-20. The boys played some strong hard defence to hold out a relentless attack from the opposition to take it to the final whistle with a 24-20 win. We travel to Edgewater next Saturday, looking to push our win streak to five.

2nd XV Rugby: Faced a strong Dilworth team on Saturday. We managed to come away with a 12-10 victory; a great result for the boys.

U60kg Rugby: Were looking to get their first win of the season, after a few close, tough losses in recent weeks. The boys showed off what they can do, and piled on the points, beating Macleans 43-14.

U15 Rugby: Unfortunately had their first loss of the season, going down 12-10 to a strong Liston side on Saturday.

TAUREWA CAMP Whether kayaking down a river, tramping in the Tongariro National Park or cooking a massive chocolate self-saucing pudding, Taurewa trips are an action-packed week full of highlights!

Taurewa is Avondale College's very own campsite in the central North Island, where students can spend time experiencing a variety of activities and challenges in the great outdoors.

Activities around camp include a low ropes course, a walk through the local stream, and the Fairy Falls walk where students have the opportunity to stand behind a waterfall. Other activities include kayaking at Tokaanu, walking the Taranaki Falls track in the Tongariro National Park and circumnavigating Lake Rotopounamu. For senior students, the overnight tramp is always a highlight!

All Year 10, Year 12, Year 13 and International students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp.

We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure.

Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to remind their parents when they know their camp is coming up!

TAUREWA ADULT HELPERS NEEDED! We would like to draw your attention to an exciting opportunity to work with our students at our school camp, Taurewa, which is located beside the Tongariro National Park.

Adult helpers are vital to the success of our Taurewa Camps, and we are currently looking for some more volunteers for upcoming trips! A reasonable level of fitness is required but no experience in the activities is necessary.

Each camp is five days long and includes the following activities based around Tongariro National Park: • Year 10s: Kayaking, day tramps, hot pools, low ropes course and more!

• Year 12s: Mountain biking, rock climbing (indoors), overnight tramping, low ropes course and more!

• Year 13s: Overnight tramping, white water rafting, low ropes course and more!

All trip costs are covered and adults can hire any clothing or equipment from the Taurewa Office at no cost.

Adult helpers need to be over 21 years of age, and willing to complete a police check.
