An outstanding performance on the first night of the Auckland Showquest competition on Wednesday 5 June saw Avondale College win the overall prize, along with awards for theme, lighting and choreography! The nationwide performing arts competition challenges students to put together a creative mini-spectacular, complete with video wall, sound and lighting. Avondale's student leaders Cate McIntosh and David Tuitama had begun thinking about the performance in October last year, and following a round of auditions and rehearsals over the last few months, were both delighted with the way Avondale's environmentally themed performance came together on on the night. “Showquest was an incredible experience, from the nine months preparing to the performance day itself," said Cate. "It was so amazing to be able to work with such a talented team and meet students from other schools who were also passionate about the performing arts. It was an experience that I will never forget!” Congratulations to all who were involved!

HOCKEY

1st XI Boys Hockey: Lost to Pakuranga, 3-1 on Wednesday. 2nd XI Boys Hockey: Defeated St Peter’s 5-1 to continue their strong start to the season. Junior Girls Hockey: Played against their counterparts from Pakuranga this week at our home turf. The first half saw a very swift and early goal scored by Tiana, just minutes into the start of the game. The girls immediately grew in confidence as they continued with play. The team showed strength in their communication and in their passing as they fended off the Pakuranga attack, managing to keep them scoreless up to half-time. The second half saw a little more action - from both sides. Pakuranga came out strongly after their half-time break, scoring a goal against our girls. They showed renewed energy now they were also on the score board. But Avondale countered that attack with a follow up goal by Alisi. Avondale were back in the lead again. Shortly after this goal, Avondale widened their lead with a third goal by Alice. With only 15 minutes left in the game, Pakuranga followed up with their second goal, attempting to narrow the margin. Both teams were growing increasingly tired, and a few errors made for some nervous side-line viewing. Pakuranga's attack grew stronger, but our girls maintained good defence and had a couple of solid attempts at a further goal, without success. Score at full-time was 3-2 to Avondale. Well done, girls!

TAUREWA CAMP Whether kayaking down a river, tramping in the Tongariro National Park or cooking a massive chocolate self-saucing pudding, Taurewa trips are an action-packed week full of highlights! Taurewa is Avondale College's very own campsite in the central North Island, where students can spend time experiencing a variety of activities and challenges in the great outdoors. Activities around camp include a low ropes course, a walk through the local stream, and the Fairy Falls walk where students have the opportunity to stand behind a waterfall. Other activities include kayaking at Tokaanu, walking the Taranaki Falls track in the Tongariro National Park and circumnavigating Lake Rotopounamu. For senior students, the overnight tramp is always a highlight! All Year 10, Year 12, Year 13 and International students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp. We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to remind their parents when they know their camp is coming up!
