Avondale College students and staff celebrated Samoan Language Week with a variety of fun activites schoolwide. One of the highlights was the lunchtime Siva Dancing lessons in the dance studios, which were very well attended!

Also popular was the display of Samoan-themed books in the library.

JAZZ TRIP Twenty-two Avondale College jazz students attended 'Jazz on the Road' on Wednesday 29 May. Our students joined hundreds of other jazz students from schools across Auckland for an exciting and challenging series of workshops, master classes, and concerts delivered by Rodger Fox Big Band, featuring international jazz musicians and educators.

FURTHER STRIKE ACTION PROPOSED BY THE PPTA Earlier this week, the ongoing strike action by the PPTA meant that our Year 9 students were ‘rostered home’ for a day.

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR TERTIARY STUDY Applications for scholarships for tertiary study next year are opening soon.

It is the student’s responsibility to search for scholarships they are eligible for and to know the closing dates. https://www.moneyhub.co.nz/scholarhips-nz.html is a great place to start this search.

Closing dates for the main university scholarships are as follows.

NB: All scholarship applications require a school endorsement and/or reference (email address to provide on any online application is: tmj@avcol.school.nz) This must be applied for through the Careers Department.

Students must fill out an “Application for Principal’s Reference” form (available on intranet or from Careers) and return it to Careers at least three weeks before the closing date of the scholarship. No exceptions.

Thank you to those families who have paid their child's sports fees. A friendly reminder to those who have not yet paid, that these fees are due by Friday 7 June.

Please vaccinate your child or young person if they have not had one measles (MMR) vaccine. It is free at your GP.

Check your child's immunisation records in their Well Child/Tamariki Ora book or ring your GP clinic.

Students in a class with someone who has measles may be asked to stay home by the Public Health Service for one to two weeks, if they have had no MMR vaccinations.

Tell your GP or after hours clinic if you suspect measles before you arrive, so you don't infect others.

Students with one or more MMR vaccinations can still attend school.

Senior B Lacrosse: Went down 18-4 to Westlake Girls on Thursday after school.

BADMINTON

Girls A Badminton: Had a decisive victory over Epsom Girls, 6-0, on Friday.

Girls B Badminton: Had a great win, 5-1, against Auckland Grammar.

Girls C Badminton: Lost 6-0 to St Cuthbert’s.

Boys A Badminton: Defeated Kings’ College, 4-2, on Friday.

Boys B Badminton: Lost 5-1 to St Peter’s on Monday night.

Boys C Badminton: Also went down 5-1 on Monday, losing to Kings.

BASKETBALL

Senior A Girls Basketball: Won by default against Diocesan.

Junior Girls Basketball: Had their first win of the season, defeating Lynfield, 44-13, on Thursday.

Junior A Boys Basketball: Convincingly defeated Lynfield, 47-23, on Wednesday night.

Junior B Boys Basketball: Lost to Auckland Grammar, 106-9.

U19 Boys Basketball: Had a narrow loss to Liston, 29-25, on Wednesday.

U17 A Boys Basketball: Went down 46-28 to a strong Mt Albert Grammar team on Thursday night.

U17 B Boys Basketball: Got their first win of the season, beating Marcellin, 31-12.

FOOTBALL

1st XI Boys Football: Played in the first round of the Knockout Cup on Tuesday, but went down, 6-1, to Selwyn College.

2nd XI Girls Football: Had another good win, this time defeating MAGS, 2-0.

NETBALL

Premier 1 Netball: Had a good win against St Dominic’s, 32-23, on Tuesday. Taylor Ensor took out the Player of the Day award.

Premier 2 Netball: Were narrowly defeated on Tuesday, going down to St Dominic’s, 24-23. April Taito was Player of the Day. Senior Grey Netball: Went down to Waitakere, 18-15, in a close game.

Player of the Day went to Riley Watson.

RUGBY

Girls 10s Rugby: Won by default against Epsom Girls.

SQUASH

Girls A Squash: Defeated Epsom Girls, 3-1.

Girls B Squash: Eased past Orewa College, 4-0 on Monday.

Premier Boys Squash: Went down to Kings’ College, 12-1, on Wednesday.

Senior B Boys Squash: Lost to Macleans, 12-3.

Junior Boys Squash: Proved too strong for Glenfield, winning 4-0.

SWIMMING

Alex Dunkley won a Bronze medal in the 1500m Freestyle at the 2019 ASA Opens Championships over the weekend. This is a great achievement, as this was in the Open age event, and Alex is just 14 years old.

Jacob Laurence also competed in this race, and finished just behind Alex in fourth place.

HOCKEY

Junior Girls Hockey: It was a hard-fought battle this week for the Under 15 Girls team. Baradene surprised the Avondale team by scoring a goal very early on in the piece. This shook up the nerves of the group, who then did all they could to defend the continued attack in the first half of the game. It was clear to see the impact of that initial goal as the Avondale team struggled to find their form; however, the second half saw Avondale back in the swing of it, as they held onto the majority of ball possession. There were several good attempts at the goal, but Baradene managed to defend our attacks to keep their lead. Final score: 0-1 to Baradene.

1st XI Boys Hockey: The first ten minutes began well, but similarly to last week against Kings, marking became loose and we leaked goal after goal; the 6th, coming from the third PC and after the half time whistle. Larry, our stand in coach, was positive about highlighting the key points of those first ten minutes. The boys refocused and had a great second half, competing for every 50/50 ball and not allowing the space that caused so much trouble over the previous 15 minute period. Opportunities came for both teams in the second half, but neither team converted. Final score: 6-0 to Kings.

2nd XI Boys Hockey: Went down to Pakuranga in a close match, 4-3, on Wednesday.

1st XI Girls Hockey: Had a 2-0 loss to Mt Roskill.

TAUREWA CAMP Whether kayaking down a river, tramping in the Tongariro National Park or cooking a massive chocolate self-saucing pudding, Taurewa trips are an action-packed week full of highlights!

Taurewa is Avondale College's very own campsite in the central North Island, where students can spend time experiencing a variety of activities and challenges in the great outdoors.

Activities around camp include a low ropes course, a walk through the local stream, and the Fairy Falls walk where students have the opportunity to stand behind a waterfall. Other activities include kayaking at Tokaanu, walking the Taranaki Falls track in the Tongariro National Park and circumnavigating Lake Rotopounamu. For senior students, the overnight tramp is always a highlight!

All Year 10, Year 12, Year 13 and International students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp.

We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure.

Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to remind their parents when they know their camp is coming up!

TAUREWA ADULT HELPERS NEEDED! We would like to draw your attention to an exciting opportunity to work with our students at our school camp, Taurewa, which is located beside the Tongariro National Park.

Adult helpers are vital to the success of our Taurewa Camps, and we are currently looking for some more volunteers for upcoming trips! A reasonable level of fitness is required but no experience in the activities is necessary.

Each camp is five days long and includes the following activities based around Tongariro National Park: • Year 10s: Kayaking, day tramps, hot pools, low ropes course and more!

• Year 12s: Mountain biking, rock climbing (indoors), overnight tramping, low ropes course and more!

• Year 13s: Overnight tramping, white water rafting, low ropes course and more!

All trip costs are covered and adults can hire any clothing or equipment from the Taurewa Office at no cost.

Adult helpers need to be over 21 years of age, and willing to complete a police check.
