Six outstanding Avondale College students were recognised at the annual Whau Youth Awards on 17 May. Funded by the Whau Local Board, the awards recognise ‘incredible’ young people who live, work, play and study in the Whau – Blockhouse Bay, New Windsor, Green Bay, New Lynn, Avondale and Kelston area. “Whau Youth Award winners are kind, brave, hard-working, humble, talented, passionate and true,” said Whau Youth Awards Coordinator Jaclyn Bonicci. The Avondale College Jazz Combo provided superb music for the event, which was attended by people from all over the Whau community. CAMBRIDGE INTERNATIONAL 2019 FEES HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? IGCSE $150 per subject AS and A2 Level Subjects are $155 per subject STUDENTS PREPARE FOR SHOWQUEST Over recent months, 75 Avcol students have been hard at work devising their student-led creative performance for next week's Showquest competition. Showquest is the new nationwide performing arts platform that has replaced Stage Challenge, and showcases music, drama and dance in choreographed mini-spectacular performances. Under the leadership of Cate McIntosh and David Tuitama, our students have taken responsibility for nearly every aspect of the performance. Their production includes Spoken Word and a video wall and addresses the issue of plastic pollution in the ocean. Avondale College will perform at Showquest next week on Wednesday 5 June at the Spark Arena. A few tickets are still available through Ticketek - don't miss out!
ALUMNI NEWS: ARJUNA RELEASES NEW SINGLE Talented singer/songwriter Arjuna Oakes has released a new single this week. 'Deep End' is available on Spotify here. Radio NZ caught up with him for a 'Sofa Session' as part of NZ Music Month, saying "With his perfect blend of shining jazz piano and beautiful soulful vocals, you're in for a treat." BADMINTON
Our Boys B and Boys C faced off on Monday night, with the B team coming out on top 5-1. Girls B: Lost 4-2 to King’s College. Boys A: Lost 6-0 to MAGS. Girls A: Won against St Cuthbert’s 5-1 on Friday.
BASKETBALL
Junior B Boys: Came up against Massey High School on Wednesday and lost 43-19. Junior Girls: Went down to MAGS 34-21. U17 A Boys: Had an outstanding win on Thursday night, defeating Henderson 73-26. Senior A Boys: Came up against Western Springs on Friday night at Avondale. The boys were looking to bounce back from last week’s narrow loss to St Peters. They did just that and came away with a 9183 victory to continue their strong start to the season.
determination was clearly evident on her face throughout. Well done, Kimberley - a top 10 finish is a very good result. Wiremu Ngamotu ran a fantastic race as well, placing 17th out of 130 competitors - the largest group of competitors in the competition. He bettered his time from the North West Zones competition, shaving off 30 seconds from last week. Ayub Sayid and Oliver Harrison faced an intensely fierce Intermediate Boys group of just under 100 competitors. Both boys kept up with the front pack from the get-go. Ayub showed fire in his belly as he continued round the course, trying not to let the other competitors overtake him on corners. After a fantastic effort he finally placed 21st. Oliver, however, suffered an injury mid-race and could not continue - he had given it 100% up to that point. We are very proud of both these boys!

1st XI Girls: Put in a good performance against MAGS, a team who had beaten them by significant margins previously. With the game tied at 1-1 with little time left, MAGS scored a goal to win the game. Final score: 2-1 to MAGS. Junior Girls: Played against Rangitoto on Wednesday night. A great shot by Avondale in the final moments unfortunately hit the crossbar, which meant that Rangitoto won the game 4-3. 1st XI Boys: Hosted Macleans on Friday night at Parrs Park. The boys put in a strong performance, coming away with a 2-0 win. Year 9 Boys: Also played against Macleans, and also won. A tight contest saw the final score end up 1-0 to Avondale. 3rd XI Boys: Continue to play well, defeating MAGS 5-3 on Saturday.

CROSS COUNTRY
The Auckland Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships were held on Thursday, at St Kentigern College. It proved to be a tough day at the office for our cross country athletes. Kimberley May went into the competition as one of the clear favourites after winning the North West Zones competition last week. In near perfect conditions, Kimberley kept close to the leading bunch and by the end of her gruelling 4km undulating run, placed a very respectable 8th in the Intermediate Girls division. She fought the entire race, and the

Junior Girls: With two players away, the team knew they had to give it everything in their game against Epsom Girls Grammar. And what a fantastic effort by the girls. The first half saw three goals awarded to Avondale College, the first within a few minutes of the start of the game. Epsom scored one goal. After shaking up the opposition, the second half saw the girls settle well into their positions, marking their players and passing the ball intuitively between themselves with incredible skill and foresight. With only five minutes to the end, a 4th and final goal was awarded to Avondale. Well done to the entire team, and goal scorers: Moe racking up two and Amelia and Angelina scoring one goal apiece. The team have improved in leaps and bounds, and it is wonderful to see the drills/skill-work and training sessions undertaken during the week are being applied to the game - with great success. Final score: 4-1 to Avondale. 1st XI Boys: Our lads started strongly against King’s College, taking the game to them with Lewis Rose providing strength and composure everywhere, it seemed. We spent much of the first quarter playing cat and mouse, with neither team dominating, until some lightening paced and deceptive dribbling caught us off guard in the circle for a goal against. Rahul Naickar and Dan Parkinson worked very hard at the back. In the ten minutes prior to half time, something clicked in the opposition as they began to pick up the pace. This was a very difficult patch in the game and the boys needed to draw on their maturity and inner strength to maintain focus. Their teamwork, pace and skills overwhelmed our defensive shield and we found ourselves down 0-7 at half time. Miss Norman settled the atmosphere at half time with composure, advising the boys to approach the second half with renewed vigour and to assume we were starting again at 0-0. The boys came out firing and ran and tackled and ran and tackled ,again and again to frustrate the opposition, surviving a number of PCs against. Alex Stenberg and Hersh Patel did well with a few offensive opportunities, but their goalie was staunch to deny us goals on both occasions. It was a momentous second half where we held Kings College goal-less for the whole 25 minutes. This is a massive achievement against the strongest team in the A Grade competition. With three wins and a loss so far, the boys are doing well. 1st XI Girls: Came up against Baradene College’s 2nd XI on Thursday night in the first week of their playoff series. The two sides couldn’t be separated, and the game ended 0-0. This forced a shootout, where we were just edged out, 4-3, to narrowly lose the game.

Premier 1: Had a very narrow victory on Tuesday night, defeating Massey High, 23-22. Maryanne Moata’ane was Player of the Day. Premier 2: Defeated Sunderland 33-25. Joey Zhong was Player of the Day. Senior Black: Lost to Massey, 38-9. Well done to Losaline Otanuku for winning Player of the Day. Senior Grey: Just missed out on a win against St Dominic’s, going down 18-17. Larissa Kumar was the Player of the Day. Senior White: Had a strong win against Western Springs on Tuesday, coming away on top 24-20. Khalani Stowers won Player of the Day. Junior Premier: Easily defeated Rutherford on Saturday 46-25. Louisa Finau was Player of the Day. Year 10 Black: Had a very tight contest against St Dominic’s. There was only one point in it, with Avondale taking the win, 27-26. Player of the Day went to Faith Pauli. Year 10 White: Had a strong win, beating Rutherford 31-17 on Saturday. Georgia Broughton won Player of the Day. Year 10 Silver: Were pushed hard by Waitakere, but came away with a good win 19-13. Jacinta Peresa was the pick of the bunch, winning Player of the Day. Year 10 Grey: Had a strong win against Lynfield, 25-17. Player of the Day was Alisha Hogan.

Girls 10 a-side Rugby Team: Looked to back up last week’s impressive win when they took on rivals Kelston. The girls played hard and came away with a 48-20 win on Monday night. 1st XV: The 1st XV hosted Papakura College, looking to build on last weekend’s win. A number of boys were ruled out of the match with illness, meaning others needed to step up for this fixture. The game started well for Avondale, with the captain Kiahan Simons-Tipau scoring a long try, breaking a number of tackles along the way. Number 8 Maua Fialelei-Tuigamala crashed over for the second try to give Avondale a 10-0 lead. Before half-time, centre Jacob Tuala-Dawson scored two well-worked team tries, one of which was converted by Ollie Carroll. Half-time score was 22-3 to Avondale. The second half started on the same note as the first, with Nathaniel Roma scoring a try on debut and giving the home side a solid 29-3 lead. Papakura then sprung into action, scoring the next three tries and closing the gap to 29-20. With the game getting close, Ola Hoeft scored a try in the left corner from a scrum move which was later converted by Ollie. The final score was 36-20 to Avondale. 2nd XV: Continued their fine start to the season, beating Western Springs 24-12 on Saturday. U70 Boys: Proved too good for Selwyn. The boys scored try after try and came away with an outstanding 82-5 win over the weekend. U60 Boys: Had a narrow loss to Auckland Grammar on Saturday. Down 17-5 at halftime, the boys came out strongly in the second half to take the lead with not long to go. A try to Auckland Grammar in the final minutes saw the game tied. Unfortunately, their kicker was successful on the conversion, which gave them a 22-20 win. U15 Boys: Remain undefeated with little challenge to start their season, travelling to De La Salle and coming away with a 31-0 win.

TAUREWA CAMP Whether kayaking down a river, tramping in the Tongariro National Park or cooking a massive chocolate self-saucing pudding, Taurewa trips are an action-packed week full of highlights! Taurewa is Avondale College's very own campsite in the central North Island, where students can spend time experiencing a variety of activities and challenges in the great outdoors. Activities around camp include a low ropes course, a walk through the local stream, and the Fairy Falls walk where students have the opportunity to stand behind a waterfall. Other activities include kayaking at Tokaanu, walking the Taranaki Falls track in the Tongariro National Park and circumnavigating Lake Rotopounamu. For senior students, the overnight tramp is always a highlight! All Year 10, Year 12, Year 13 and International students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp. We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to remind their parents when they know their camp is coming up! TAUREWA ADULT HELPERS NEEDED! We would like to draw your attention to an exciting opportunity to work with our students at our school camp, Taurewa, which is located beside the Tongariro National Park. Adult helpers are vital to the success of our Taurewa Camps, and we are currently looking for some more volunteers for upcoming trips! A reasonable level of fitness is required but no experience in the activities is necessary. Each camp is five days long and includes the following activities based around Tongariro National Park: • Year 10s: Kayaking, day tramps, hot pools, low ropes course and more! • Year 12s: Mountain biking, rock climbing (indoors), overnight tramping, low ropes course and more! • Year 13s: Overnight tramping, white water rafting, low ropes course and more! All trip costs are covered and adults can hire any clothing or equipment from the Taurewa Office at no cost. Adult helpers need to be over 21 years of age, and willing to complete a police check.
