B TALENT QUEST - FINAL Thursday's Talent Quest final was an outstanding event, showcasing a wide range of musical, vocal and dance talent. Superbly MC'd by the comedic trio of Monty Mathieson, Fairuz Afandi and Shirley Chen, the event highlighted what a range of top quality talent we have at Avondale College! The musical performances were diverse, with a string quartet, a jazz quartet, a rock band and an Indian drumming group. The dance section featured a high energy K-Pop number with 27 performers; and a performance by hip hop dancer (and Head Boy) Kiahan Simons-Tipau, who won second place this year. As ever, the vocal performances were strong, with three soloists and a trio, and a stand out performance of 'Bust Your Windows' by overall winner, Delores Lesatele. As tradition demands, the evening concluded with items by staff and prefects, with the prefects bringing a life-sized Super Mario game to the stage. The undisputed winners though were the staff, with their superb 'dance through the decades' number. Special thanks go to the judges (Ben Collier, Grace Ikenasio and Hadleigh Pouesi) who had the difficult job of choosing the winners, and to the Talent Quest Prefect Committee and to the Year 13 Deans Mrs Parker and Mrs Yallop and Deputy Principal Dr Brown for their efforts in putting together such an entertaining evening. BLAKE INSPIRE Year 11 student Vienna Samuels was selected from hundreds of applications to represent West Auckland at BLAKE Inspire (formerly the Sir Peter Blake Trust Youth Enviroleaders Forum). The week-long programme ran from 12 to 18 April in Waikato where Vienna joined 55 other Year 11-13 students from around the country to learn about environmental issues facing New Zealand, including climate change, marine and freshwater health and biodiversity decline. Some of the highlights for Vienna included meeting up with like-minded students. “The eagerness and passion my fellow delegates have for the environment was a highlight,” she said. “We learnt about the ecological importance of estuaries and then we took a beautiful kayak trip across the estuary in Raglan and learnt more of the history of that area and how the pancake rocks are formed there.” The course included a range of activities designed to develop leadership skills as well as learning about environmental issues and innovation in the Waikato region. Vienna also particularly enjoyed their visit to the Waitomo Caves, where they learned about eco-tourism and environmental sustainability. “It was an awesome learning experience and fun-packed week,” she said. “My brain is bursting with great ideas and new goals which I’m keen to put into action soon! Through Inspire 2019, I have become more involved in educating people about climate change and more active in playing a key role for the environment.” Vienna is now involved in putting together a video with fellow delegates outlining their concerns for the environment and possible solutions.

SPORTS REPORT Monday 29th April – Sunday 5th May

BADMINTON

Boys A: The team started off their season with a solid 4-2 victory over Mt Albert B on Monday night.

BASKETBALL

Senior A Girls: On Friday 3 May, the Auckland Senior A Grade Basketball competition held their first games of the season. Our Senior A Girls side were matched up against Pakuranga College; a team that had beaten us previously. Having played a solid year of basketball last year, our girls were one year older and more prepared for the game ahead. Right off the bat Maclani Michael hit two threes and Maraea Whiu hit one, which gave us a four point lead at the end of the first quarter. After a series of missed layups and a few soft defensive plays, the girls shook off the cobwebs and started to play ball. We ended the game winning 69-49; a strong team victory. An awesome effort was given by all the girls, in particular Bella Rasmussen for her defensive presence in the paint and rebounding, along with Maraea (26) and Tikenati Raion (12) who top scored for the team. This coming Friday we look forward to playing Saint Kentigern College; a team who played in the Premier Grade last year. All the best, girls! Senior A Boys: Our Premier Boys Basketball team also played their first game of the season on Friday in the Senior A Grade against Pakuranga College. With significant preseason training behind them, the team was set for a good game ahead. Both teams came out fighting, but Pakuranga managed to come out on top in the first quarter, 15-17. Pakuranga pulled out their cards early, gaining an eight point lead at half time, but this didn’t phase the Avondale team of veteran players. A strong start to the third quarter and some important offensive plays by Bradley Murray-MacGregor, Jack Childs and Tauhir Toyer brought the team back in to play. The team put on a strong defensive effort to hold Pakuranga to a measly nine points in the third whilst scoring a whopping 29 points, ending the quarter 60-48. With a consistent fourth quarter effort, the team ended the game winning 79-63. This was a well-deserved win and a great beginning to the season. A special mention goes out to top scorers Jack (27), Tauhir (19) and Bradley (19). Awesome job, team!

FENCING

We’ve had over 30 students take part in fencing so far this term. This is a massive increase from last year, it’s great to see so many students getting involved!

FOOTBALL

1st XI Girls: The Premier Girls Football team kicked off their 2019 season with a well-deserved win against Marist on Wednesday afternoon. Having previously lost to Marist in a pivotal game at tournament week in 2018, our girls had a point to prove. From the very start our Avondale players came out strong and determined, knowing they needed to strike early. The final score was 2-1, with centre midfielder Kiera Sekene and co-captain Maclani Michael both finding the back of the net in the first half. Special mention to Nicole Magee, the youngest of the squad, for stepping up to play sweeper and learning to take charge of our defensive line. Player of the day was Kim Tasker who played with tenacity the whole 60 minutes, using her strength and power on the left wing brilliantly. The Premier Girls Football team have their next game on Monday 13th May (week 3) at home against St Cuthbert's. 14th Grade Boys: The boys lost 4-0 to St Peter’s College in their promotion/relegation match. They will now play in the 14A2 grade for the season. Junior Girls: It was a tough game for the Junior Girls against Diocesan; despite being up 2-0; unfortunately, they lost the game 4-2. 1st XI Boys: The team came up against Glendowie in their first game of the season. There was nothing between the two sides, with the match ending in a 1-1 draw.

B

HOCKEY

1st XI Boys: Having beaten St Peter’s twice in pre-season friendly matches, the boys went into the game with confidence. However, it took the boys a little while to settle into their stride as St Peters now showed up with their full strength team. Some strong attacking up the centre of the pitch saw Hersh Patel and Shivang Patel combining nicely with great agility. We saw some good examples of team play as we retained much of the possession in the first half. Joshua Meads and Tristan Kewell were strong together on attack in the right side of the circle, but no luck. Lewis Rose, leading by example, showed solid tackling, speed and tactical prowess in the halves, controlling the game. Rahul Naickar provided the touch needed for Anoosh Kulkarni to pass it off to Shivang for a lovely field goal, 1-0. Our sliding defensive strategy worked well on most occasions, but the odd running counterattack required shutting down by goalie, Ritesh Hanmenthu, who did himself proud and worked hard, saving a number of on-goal shots with successive kicking clearances. Alex Stenberg milked a beautiful PC opportunity as he was chased towards the goal in the second half. Lewis’s hit to Jappreet Kullar waiting on the post, worked beautifully when Jappreet deflected it in for our second goal. Soon after came a huge goal against us at an acute angle which was nicely executed and we had to compose our nerves while being only 2-1 up for a time. Another PC opportunity created magically by Alex saw himself and Lewis completing the 1-2-1 and a sweet goal from Lewis ended the game 3-1. This was a great start to our 2019 campaign to defend the Supercity B title. 1st XI Girls: The girls went down 5-0 to St Cuthbert’s 2nd XI in their opening game of the season.

NETBALL

Senior White: Went down 16-6 to St Dominics. Junior Premier: Dominated Western Springs 60-1. Player of the Day was Gizelle Schaster-Aitui Year 10 Black: Had a loss against Kelston Girls, 30-14. Player of the Day was Hayley Greenhalgh. Year 10 White: Drew 22-22 in a tight contest, with Nicole Pihema winning Player of the Day. Year 10 Grey: Convincingly defeated Western Springs 17-5. Player of the Day was Diana Fareni. Year 10 Silver: Went down 21-9 to Western Springs. Namita Misherwan was Player of the Day. Year 9 Black: Defeated Waitekere College 34-15. Rachel Malafu was Player of the Day. Year 9 Grey: Lost 13-3 to Lynfield. Elle Preston was Player of the Day. Congratulations to Grace Nweke who has been named in the New Zealand Secondary Schools Netball team to play against the England U19 team in July!

SWIMMING

Over the school holidays, Jayden Collins competed in the National Age Grade Championships in Wellington. Results: 200m Freestyle Placed 10th Overall (13 year olds) and 8th in New Zealand (13 year olds). 400m Freestyle - Placed 6th Overall (13 year olds). 4th in New Zealand (13 year olds). 1500m Freestyle - Placed 1st (13 year olds). These are some great results, especially the Gold Medal. Well done, Jayden.

WEIGHTLIFTING

Premier 1: Defeated Green Bay 29-21. Premier 2: Had two good wins, firstly defeating Sunderland, then defeating Henderson 36-11. Senior Black: A close 15-14 win against Waitakere.

The Avondale College Weightlifting Club had the privilege of having former Avcol student Kanah Andrews-Nahu come along to one of their training sessions to talk to the students and give them some training tips. Kanah is preparing for the Junior World's in June, closely followed by the Pacific Games in July, on the path to Olympic Games' qualification.

TAUREWA CAMP Whether kayaking down a river, tramping in the Tongariro National Park or cooking a massive chocolate self-saucing pudding, Taurewa trips are an action-packed week full of highlights! Taurewa is Avondale College's very own campsite in the central North Island, where students can spend time experiencing a variety of activities and challenges in the great outdoors. Activities around camp include a low ropes course, a walk through the local stream, and the Fairy Falls walk where students have the opportunity to stand behind a waterfall. Other activities include kayaking at Tokaanu, walking the Taranaki Falls track in the Tongariro National Park and circumnavigating Lake Rotopounamu. For senior students, the overnight tramp is always a highlight! All Year 10, Year 12, Year 13 and International students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp. We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to remind their parents when they know their camp is coming up!
