B MEGA SCHOOLS HIP HOP COMPETITION Avondale College's Mega Schools Hip Hop Crew burst onto the stage at the NZ Mega Schools competition in the holidays, performing a high-energy routine at the Vodafone Events Centre on the 17th of April. The group had been rigorously rehearsing since Week 4 of the first term, having started off with auditions and ending up with a crew made up of 29 students, from Year 9 to 13. This group has been led by David Tuitama and Jody Laititi with choreographic support from Baileigh Greaves. This was the first time Avcol had entered this competition - and given the enthusiastic response both on and off the stage, we're sure it won't be the last!

FAMILY CONNECTION
NZSSO Mereem Dewerse in Year 11 had the wonderful opportunity of playing principal horn with the New Zealand Secondary School's Symphony Orchestra (NZSSSO) in the holidays. This is an annual festival orchestra which is auditioned on application from all secondary school students in New Zealand. This year the week-long course was held in Christchurch and conducted by Uwe Grodd. Mereem played principal horn for the programme, which included Mahler’s first symphony with 9 french horns. She was commended by the conductor for her tone colour.
The Avondale Family Connection allows families to have direct access, through the internet, to a wide range of information about their child’s academic performance, attendance, activities, events, trips, parent/ teacher interview appointments and teacher only days. ABSENCES Parents/Caregivers must notify the College by 9.30am each day if their child is away. You can do this in several ways: a) Send a notification via Family Connection (preferred) • Log in to Family Connection • Select ‘Available E-Forms’ (at top left) • Click on Absence Notification • Fill out the details, save and submit. You will receive a confirmatory email once the notification is approved. This replaces the need to supply an absence note to the home room teacher. b) Email the Attendance Officer: absences@avcol.school.nz. Please include your child’s full name, home room class and the reason for the absence. c) Phone the Absence Line: (09) 820 1071 Students are required to provide a written note for all absences, even after the school has been notified by phone. This note must be brought on the first day of attendance after the absence and given to the home room teacher. Parents will receive a text from the school if their child is absent from home room without explanation.
Students must have a note from home if they are signing out of the College. WWW.AVCOL.SCHOOL.NZ

Former Avcol student Kanah Andrews-Nahu has broken yet another string of weight lifting records. While competing in Darwin at the Arafura Games, a qualifying event for next year's Olympics, the 18-year-old broke three Oceania junior records and three NZ under 20 records in the under 76-kilogram class, enough to bring home a gold medal for her weight class. Kanah Andrews-Nahu is also preparing for this year's junior world championships in Suva, Fiji. Kanah Andrews-Nahu

TAUREWA CAMP Whether kayaking down a river, tramping in the Tongariro National Park or cooking a massive chocolate self-saucing pudding, Taurewa trips are an action-packed week full of highlights! Taurewa is Avondale College's very own campsite in the central North Island, where students can spend time experiencing a variety of activities and challenges in the great outdoors. Activities around camp include a low ropes course, a walk through the local stream, and the Fairy Falls walk where students have the opportunity to stand behind a waterfall. Other activities include kayaking at Tokaanu, walking the Taranaki Falls track in the Tongariro National Park and circumnavigating Lake Rotopounamu. For senior students, the overnight tramp is always a highlight! All Year 10, Year 12, Year 13 and International students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp. We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to remind their parents when they know their camp is coming up! We would like to draw your attention to an exciting opportunity to work with our students at our school camp, Taurewa, which is located beside the Tongariro National Park. Adult helpers are vital to the success of our Taurewa Camps, and we are currently looking for some more volunteers for upcoming trips! A reasonable level of fitness is required but no experience in the activities is necessary. Each camp is five days long and includes the following activities based around Tongariro National Park: • Year 10s: Kayaking, day tramps, hot pools, low ropes course and more! • Year 12s: Mountain biking, rock climbing (indoors), overnight tramping, low ropes course and more! • Year 13s: Overnight tramping, white water rafting, low ropes course and more! All trip costs are covered and adults can hire any clothing or equipment from the Taurewa Office at no cost. Adult helpers need to be over 21 years of age, and willing to complete a police check. If you (or someone you know) would be keen to be involved, or if you would like to know more, please email: taurewa@avcol.school.nz
