Level 2 Geography Urban Field Work Wednesday saw Level 2 Geography students out of class conducting field work. The students were investigating the differences in the urban planning of Hobsonville Point and Te Atatu Peninsula. The built landscape of Hobsonville Point led one student to comment that “This isn’t the Auckland I know!” The visit led to much discussion on how each part of the city was planned. After completing comparisons students will now write a report explaining why the two suburban areas differ. With Auckland in such a time of urban transition it is satisfying to be able to teach students about the changes which are dotting their surrounding landscape on a daily basis – Geography in action!

WORLD VISION 40 HOUR FAMINE The theme for this year's 40 Hour Famine (to be held on 7-9 June) revolves around the South Sudan crisis - where thousands of young lives have been affected by conflict, drought and famine. Recently the lead students participated in the World Vision Global Leadership conference held at ASB Showgrounds in Greenlane. There they joined with many students from throughout the Auckland region to hear many inspirational speakers talk about what is happening in South Sudan.

Many thanks to our lead students involved, who include: Jaria Manase 13HWD, Naheeda Qari 13HWD, Balqis Osman 11CPB, Kheiriyah Osman 13HWD, Rita Zhong 13SHD, Christina Lieu 12HGL and Charlotte Brough 13OWD. Students at Avondale College will be involved in supporting the World Vision cause during Term 2, with more information about this to follow over the next few months. We look forward to the challenge!

NZ BLOOD DONATIONS On Friday 22 March the PAC was set up like a MASH unit, for the collection of blood for the NZ Blood Foundation! A superb response from our students and staff saw 60 new donors sign up, and over 100 offering to donate blood during the course of the day.

Thank you so much to all those who donated blood, and thank you also to the great team of students and prefects who helped with the smooth running of the day.

ABSENCES Parents/Caregivers must notify the College by 9.30am each day if their child is away.

You can do this in several ways: a) Send a notification via Family Connection (preferred) • Log in to Family Connection • Select ‘Available E-Forms’ (at top left) • Click on Absence Notification • Fill out the details, save and submit.

You will receive a confirmatory email once the notification is approved. This replaces the need to supply an absence note to the home room teacher. b) Email the Attendance Officer: absences@avcol.school.nz. Please include your child’s full name, home room class and the reason for the absence. c) Phone the Absence Line: (09) 820 1071 Students are required to provide a written note for all absences, even after the school has been notified by phone. This note must be brought on the first day of attendance after the absence and given to the home room teacher.

Parents will receive a text from the school if their child is absent from home room without explanation.

Students must have a note from home if they are signing out of the College. need help with homework? or a quiet place to study?

SPORTS REPORT Monday 18th March – Sunday 24th March

ATHLETICS

COLLEGE SPORT AUCKLAND ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIP 20 March 2019, Mt Smart Stadium RESULTS On Wednesday 20 March, our Avondale College Athletics team of 22 athletes were ready to tackle all other secondary schools in the Auckland region in their own athletic discipline. It was an incredibly long day for the team, but well worth it as Avondale College achieved a whopping 18 medal tally. Well up on previous years, the medal haul certainly made other secondary schools sit up and notice!

A quick look at the progress over the last three years certainly shows how far we have come as a school in this sport. We can be proud of this progression!

Stand-out performances for the day were numerous.

Firstly, Le’Oxeayn Maiu’u from 9WDT. An astounding all-round athlete, she achieved four medals during the competition in the Junior Girls grade: Gold in 300m sprint, 300m Hurdles, and two Bronzes in the 200m and 70m Hurdles.

Another standout performance came from our International student, Yudai Meguro. A strong sprint talent from Japan, he breezed through the semifinals of the 100m and 200m, and claimed medals in both finals: a Silver for his 200m where he pushed his opponent to the limit, and a Gold medal for his 100m final. This was an incredible achievement, up against the best sprinters in Auckland secondary schools.

Our Junior Boys throws group were also well on fire, with Percy Maka taking Gold in the Discus, and Blessing Sefo taking Gold in the Shot Put. Percy also claimed a Silver in the Shot Put and Blessing a Bronze in the Javelin. This was a fantastic doublemedal effort by these incredible athletes.

Our exceptionally talented Intermediate Girls middle distance runners – Joanna Poland and Kim May - also claimed double-medals. Joanna gained the win and a Gold in the 1500m, with Kim taking Bronze. Then Joanna won Silver in a very close finish to her 800m. Kim also put up a great fight, taking a Bronze in the 800m.

There are so many performances that all justify a mention: Grace Nweke achieving Gold on High Jump, Tremayne Redman-Gardner also on the High Jump winning a Silver medal, Renee Fowler being thrown in the deep end on the 100m Hurdles, but surprising herself and the opposition and coming out on the podium with a Bronze medal. These were fantastic results by all. Congratulations to all our representative athletes – you have made us very proud and have been part of creating our Avondale College athletics legacy.

Le'Oxeayn Maiu'u A big thanks to the staff involved who helped on the day, and those who transported the athletes to and from the stadium. There is much to coordinate with athletes in all different directions.

It’s incredibly rewarding for all of us, when we see our college athletes succeed.

Some of these athletes have now been selected for the Auckland Secondary Schools team, and will be heading next to the North Island Secondary Schools competition in Tauranga. We look forward to seeing their results from this.

CRICKET

Our 1st XI Girls came up against Epsom Girls in the Bronze medal match on Wednesday. Winning the toss and electing to bat, Avondale set a first innings total of 48 runs. Epsom Girls chased down the total, and Avondale lost by five wickets.

Overall, the girls finished a commendable 4th out of 12 teams.

Our Year 10 Boys had a tough loss in their bronze medal match, losing to Auckland Grammar by 44 runs. Regardless of the result, well done to this team, finishing 4th in a strong competition.

The Year 10 Boys came up against St Peter’s to decide the winner of their competition. They were no match for us, as we came away with a 102 run win. A big congratulations to all involved with this team for an awesome effort across the season!

CYCLING

National Cycling Track Championships The Avantidome in Cambridge hosted the best riders from around the country for this year’s National Cycling Track Champs. Holly Bliss (Year 11) was one of six under 17 girls selected to ride for the Auckland team over the four day competition.

Holly’s stand out ride came in the individual pursuit which saw her smash her personal best

SPORTS REPORT [CONT] CYCLING [CONT] and set the fastest time for any Auckland rider this year! Her time saw her finish in 8th place over with the fist two riders setting new national records. In the team pursuit Holly helped her team qualify for the bronze medal final, unfortunately just being beaten in the final by Bay of Plenty to finish 4th.

TOUCH

The Senior Girls faced off against Rutherford and continued their strong form, winning 7-1.

SWIMMING

Olivia Stairmand competed at the 2019 Division 2 Championships, held in Dunedin from the 13th to the 16th of March. Olivia won a bronze medal in her 200m freestyle event, beating her personal best by more than five seconds!

TENNIS

The Senior Girls continued their unbeaten start to the season, defeating Marist B, 7-2.

VOLLEYBALL

Our Senior Girls went down to Kelston Girls 2-0, before winning 2-1 against Auckland Girls.

WATERPOLO

COME AND CHEER ON GRACE! Our Year 13 netballer Grace Nweke is making quite an impression on the court for the Northern Mystics so far this season! Not only is her shooting accuracy causing comment but she scored 32 goals in just 35 minutes of game time in her last match! Come and support Grace in her upcoming matches for the Mystics!

1st & 7th April at the Trusts Arena.

The Senior Mixed team won their plate game against Waitakere by default.

TAUREWA CAMP Whether kayaking down a river, tramping in the Tongariro National Park or cooking a massive chocolate self-saucing pudding, Taurewa trips are an action-packed week full of highlights!

Taurewa is Avondale College's very own campsite in the central North Island, where students can spend time experiencing a variety of activities and challenges in the great outdoors.

Activities around camp include a low ropes course, a walk through the local stream, and the Fairy Falls walk where students have the opportunity to stand behind a waterfall. Other activities include kayaking at Tokaanu, walking the Taranaki Falls track in the Tongariro National Park and circumnavigating Lake Rotopounamu. For senior students, the overnight tramp is always a highlight!

All Year 10, Year 12, Year 13 and International students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp.

We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure.

Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to remind their parents when they know their camp is coming up!

TAUREWA ADULT HELPERS NEEDED! We would like to draw your attention to an exciting opportunity to work with our students at our school camp, Taurewa, which is located beside the Tongariro National Park. Adult helpers are vital to the success of our Taurewa Camps, and we are currently looking for some more volunteers for upcoming trips! A reasonable level of fitness is required but no experience in the activities is necessary.

Each camp is five days long and includes the following activities based around Tongariro National Park: • Year 10s: Kayaking, day tramps, hot pools, low ropes course and more!

• Year 12s: Mountain biking, rock climbing (indoors), overnight tramping, low ropes course and more!

• Year 13s: Overnight tramping, white water rafting, low ropes course and more!

All trip costs are covered and adults can hire any clothing or equipment from the Taurewa Office at no cost.

Adult helpers need to be over 21 years of age, and willing to complete a police check.
