POLYFEST More than 550 students are taking part in Polyfest this year - with a record number of groups (16!) taking to the cultural and diversity stages at the Manukau Sports Bowl on Friday and Saturday this week. Our Year 9 students greatly enjoyed a sneak preview of the items at their special assemblies on Monday and Tuesday, and our wider community evening performances have been incredibly well supported!

Once again, well done to all those who have worked so hard over so many weeks putting these items together - it has been a huge team effort! All the best for the final performances on Friday and Saturday!

This evening is to inform and inspire Year 9 - 13 Pacific Island students to explore the different tertiary education options available to them.

Pasifika liaison staff from AUT University, the University of Auckland, Massey University, University of Otago and Unitec will be present.

Parents and Caregivers are invited to attend with their children.

SHOW YOUR SUPPORT FOR LECH The Avondale College family is joining together in support of one of our own: 15 year old Lech Ulberg Lo-Tam. In February, the fine young athlete suffered an injury to his spinal cord, leaving him paralysed from the shoulders down.

Currently, there is no specific cure for people with spinal cord injuries.

However, Lech and his family remain positive that with advancing technology and treatments, this could change.

The family have set up a Gofundme page to help raise much needed funds for Lech to be able to receive specialist Epidural Stimulation and Stem Cell Therapy, which is practised in Singapore and Thailand, and is leading the way in spinal cord rehabilitation.

Any amount, big or small, will be a huge help and will be greatly appreciated.

FAMILY CONNECTION The Avondale Family Connection allows families to have direct access, through the internet, to a wide range of information about their child’s academic performance, attendance, activities, events, trips, parent/teacher interview appointments and teacher only days.

The information provided includes: Class allocations, timetables, class teachers, NCEA and Cambridge results, attendance data, detention records and assessment reports. SPORTS REPORT Monday 4th March – Sunday 10th March

CRICKET

The 1st XI Girls Cricket team won the toss and elected to field first at Selwyn College. Captain Ritisha Kumar (Player of the Day) had a fantastic match, taking two wickets and three catches. Selwyn College scored 48 runs in 20 overs. Avondale College chased down the target set in nine overs, winning by six wickets.

The Year 10 Boys’ game against Auckland Grammar was cancelled due to rain. This was also the case with the 1st XI Boys.

FOOTBALL

The 1st XI Boys had a solid 4-1 win in their pre-season friendly game against Kelston Boys.

SWIMMING

On Wednesday 6th March we had our annual Swimming Gala at West Wave. This was a fun day, with some top quality swimmers showcasing their skills. We had 23 students qualify for the Central Western Zone Championships which will be held on the 18th March.

The top swimmers for the day were as follows: Junior Boys Champion – Jacob Laurence Junior Girls Champion – Olivia Stairmand Intermediate Boys Champion – Noah Makaea Intermediate Girls Champion – Vienna Samuels Senior Boys Champion – Ikko Shibuya Senior Girls Champion – Aotea Clifton Over the weekend, four of our swimming boys competed in the Auckland Swimming Association Age Group Championships. Jayden Collins placed 2nd for 100m Freestyle, 3rd for 1500m Freestyle, and 3rd for 200m Freestyle. Jacob Laurence placed 3rd for 100m Backstroke and 400m Freestyle. In the senior competition, Sam Charles picked up a bronze in 200m Freestyle and 400m Freestyle. Ikko Shibuya won a gold medal for 50m Butterfly, 200m Freestyle and 400m Freestyle.

He also picked up three silver medals, for the 100m Butterfly, 50m Freestyle and the 100m Freestyle.

TENNIS

The Senior Girls’ game was postponed due to weather conditions.

TOUCH

Our Senior Girls went down 5-2 to Green Bay on Tuesday night.

VOLLEYBALL

The Senior Volleyball Championships have taken place this week at Pulman Park. The Premier Boys lost their opening match 3-1 to Kelston, then lost 3-0 against Rangitoto. However, the boys put in a great performance against MAGS, winning 3-0. They then won 2-1 against Otahuhu, then followed that up with a solid 2-0 win against Mangere. In their final game, they came up short against Takapuna, losing 2-1. Final placing: 10th.

The Senior Girls had a tough tournament. Despite a close game against Massey, they came away without a win, finishing 16th.

WATERPOLO

Our Senior Mixed team took a tough loss to Rutherford, conceding in the last minute to lose 6-5.

New Zealand Blood Service (NZBS) will be holding a mobile blood drive at: Avondale College Auditorium Friday 22 March 9am-2.30pm Information for Parents, Guardians and Whanau It is important that we encourage students into a lifetime habit of donating blood and making a worthwhile contribution to their community.

The Care of Children Act 2004 allows people 16 years and over to make their own decisions about whether or not they wish to give blood. Students may choose to donate blood at this session.

NZBS recommends students discuss becoming a blood donor with their family. If families have a particular objection to the student choosing to donate blood please make this known to the student and to the school before the blood drive date stated above. More information about blood donation will be available on the day of the blood drive.

Parents are also welcome to come to the school to donate blood at this blood drive.

Health: • You must be in good health.

• You cannot donate if you have a cold, flu, sore throat, cold sore, stomach bug or any other infection.

• If you have recently had a tattoo or body piercing you cannot donate for 6 months from the date of the procedure.

• If you have visited the dentist for a minor procedure you must wait 24 hours before donating; for major work wait a month.

Travel: • You must not have lived in the United Kingdom, France or the Republic of Ireland between 1980 and 1996 for more than 6 months or received a blood transfusion in ANY of these countries since 1980.

• If you have been overseas recently, please refer to the “Donating after Travelling” tool available at www.nzblood.co.nz to find out when you can donate.

Food: You must have eaten some food during the four hours prior to donation.

Identification: You must bring suitable identification with you. Acceptable ID is a document or combination of documents containing three (3) separate identifiers (e.g. NZBS Donor ID number, Full name, Photograph, Date of Birth, Home Address). A Student ID Card is acceptable if it features a photograph and two of the identifiers listed above.

With your consent we may also ask the school to confirm you are at least 16 years of age.

Important Facts About Blood • There is no substitute for human blood—healthy donors are the only source of our blood supply.

• 42,000 patients are treated with blood or blood products in New Zealand each year.

• A blood donation is separated into different components, each of which is used to treat different patients—accident trauma, patients undergoing surgery, people with leukaemia, transplant patients and many others. Blood products are also used for immunisation to help prevent diseases such as hepatitis A and B, tetanus and chickenpox.

• Each donation is able to help save up to 3 people—blood donors are literally lifesavers.

TAUREWA CAMP Whether kayaking down a river, tramping in the Tongariro National Park or cooking a massive chocolate self-saucing pudding, Taurewa trips are an action-packed week full of highlights!

Taurewa is Avondale College's very own campsite in the central North Island, where students can spend time experiencing a variety of activities and challenges in the great outdoors.

Activities around camp include a low ropes course, a walk through the local stream, and the Fairy Falls walk where students have the opportunity to stand behind a waterfall. Other activities include kayaking at Tokaanu, walking the Taranaki Falls track in the Tongariro National Park and circumnavigating Lake Rotopounamu. For senior students, the overnight tramp is always a highlight!

All Year 10, Year 12, Year 13 and International students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp.

We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure.

Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to remind their parents when they know their camp is coming up!

TAUREWA ADULT HELPERS NEEDED! We would like to draw your attention to an exciting opportunity to work with our students at our school camp, Taurewa, which is located beside the Tongariro National Park. Adult helpers are vital to the success of our Taurewa Camps, and we are currently looking for some more volunteers for upcoming trips! A reasonable level of fitness is required but no experience in the activities is necessary.

Each camp is five days long and includes the following activities based around Tongariro National Park: • Year 10s: Kayaking, day tramps, hot pools, low ropes course and more!

• Year 12s: Mountain biking, rock climbing (indoors), overnight tramping, low ropes course and more!

• Year 13s: Overnight tramping, white water rafting, low ropes course and more!

All trip costs are covered and adults can hire any clothing or equipment from the Taurewa Office at no cost.

Adult helpers need to be over 21 years of age, and willing to complete a police check.
